For some reason there is just a problem with USB, you can leave the
cards in, just disable "processor cycling"

Once the track is imported, you can always adjust the volume, using the
vu-meter as an indication. Not very precise, but that helps bring all the
tracks close to the same output. When you then burn that track, it's burned
with the volume amplification. That's what I did when burning an audio CD
made of old rock songs and newer ones.

Re: USB On a Wallstreet

2002-09-12 Thread Jeff Hubatka

I got a BUSlink USB 2.0 4-port card from the open box table at Best Buy.
Around $50 about six months ago, IIRC. The nice thing is it has four real
ports, so no dongle required. The bad thing is my Sony CyberShot isn't
recognized in OS9, although the card icon shows up on the desktop. OS X is
no problem, the WS recognizes everything and fires up iPhoto when I plug in
the camera.
"Fires up" is relative, since I'm talking about a 233mhz machine.

Re: Firewire & G3 series "Wstreet"

2002-09-12 Thread Jeff Hubatka

I have the IBM card from OWC in my Wallstreet and it works well. You get a
6-pin and a 4-pin cable with it, and both can be used at the same time. No
matter what you're limited due to lack of bus power, but I have used my iPod
and also my iMac in FW Target Mode (which is very speedy - 2GB in less than
10 minutes). The Wallstreet won't start up in target mode, so it has to be
the "receiver".

Mr. Main:

Though you didn't specifically state it, I gather you're still using
OS 9. While I have no suggestions for that, I am now using ASM
(application switcher menu) in 10.1.5, and it has an option to run in what
it calls single application mode. I use this and my windows are always
where I left them.

So if I made a bad assumption and you're running X, give it a try.

You can do it by selecting the track in iTunes and then adjust the
volume per MP3.

I have always done this. Especially on road trips. Also, iTunes does
MP3, why ever dump out of MP3 and into AIFF?

Not trying to sound abrasive, but does the iBook purchase hinge on this?
I don't think it does what he wants it to do.

However if he is going to be doing several such custom burns, you are on
the right track with Toast w/ Jam, for sure. Probably be to his benefit
not to rely on free software for specialized functions. What I'm
getting at is that it sounds like he's better off spending the $$.

Having said that, see if SoundApp can't adjust volume while ripping.
Either way, I'm not sure he'd know what level to adjust it to without
playing/importing first anyway. Or, it may be able to adjust the sound,
covert the file into another format (which may save the changed
volume?) then convert it back into AIFF so that iTunes/Disk Burner or

More on (DVD to external in 10.2)

2002-09-12 Thread Thomas Bier

I set up my iBook 700 (running 10.2) to play a DVD on my TV. Last time I
mentioned that the movie played on both the LCD and TV.

This time I plugged in the adapter and the iBook registered it as the VGA
adapter. So I told it to detect displays. This corrected the problem, well
kind of).

You might ask, what is the kind of part. Well let me tell you. The TV
wasn't a mirror display like always. My iBook was running in extended
desktop mode!

I have not been able to recreate this phenomena, but if I do, I'll let you
know.

Any Thoughts, similar experiences?

Some printer drivers do that (my HP did) if you have Classic running. If you
are, and you can, quit Classic. If that doesn't work, there's an app you can find on
VersionTracker that will fix many printer driver problems. I think it's called Print

Dancing Finder Windows

2002-09-12 Thread Andrew Main

I generally prefer not to see windows from background apps behind the
active app; too cluttered and confusing. I got tired of having to go
to the Application menu and select "Hide Others" all the time, so I
installed the HideAlways extension (one of MacUser's great System 7
utilities), which works fine, except that every time I return to the
Finder the windows have moved.

Say I position my main HD window on the left, and the Documents
folder window in the middle right of the desktop; next time I go to
the Finder they've switched places. And the next time they've
switched again. Eventually, all the windows I have open in the
Finder--no matter where I put them originally--are in two loose
bunches, on the left and the middle-right, and they trade places
seemingly at random from one time to the next. The same thing happens
when I put the PowerBook to sleep and reawaken it, and when I shut
down and start up again.

I don't remember if this happened in System 7, but it's been the same
from 8.6 thru 9.1. The "Hide Background Applications" function in RAM
Doubler 9 (in the Advanced tab) does the same thing. There seems to
be no way to induce the Finder to remember window positions. Does
anyone have any idea why this is happening, or what I can do about it?

Re: Firewire scanner to use with Pismo

2002-09-12 Thread Jim

Ed,

I, too, use a Pismo. I've been very pleased with my Umax Astra 6400
flatbed scanner. It's big and ugly, but it is fast and gave me great
quality results. Max resolution 1200x1200 DPI (though some report
1200x600 DPI, I did not find that to be true). I paid well over $200
for it from Outpost.com in June '01 and considered it worth the cost.
It got me through my time-critical project when nothing else could
deal well with the huge scans I was generating (dozens of 9"x12" at
1200 DPI, which was taking forever to go over USB + ethernet
otherwise available to me). In December '01 it was selling on
Outpost.com for about $79, so I bought a second one as a gift. It
last sold on Outpost for $49. It does not seem to be available from
any of the current mail order vendors at this time. I think Umax
gave up on it before firewire had gained a big enough market share.
This is the scanner that INCLUDED a firewire PCI card and Photoshop 5
LE! I'm sure you can still find them on various auction sites in new
condition and would consider any bid up to $100 to be reasonable for
this unit. (And no, I'm not selling mine!) The Astra Model 6450
included a transparency adaptor, but I've never seen it. I'm not
sure what Mr. Ethen was doing that required better quality than the
Astra 6400 could produce, but if he was scanning slides or
transparent films of some sort, it's very possible that the
resolution offered by the 6400 was inadequete. I have been delighted
with mine.

The way I use it is by having it in the toolbar favourites and

Printing problems

2002-09-12 Thread Tim Leverenz

I have a Rev B 667 Ti running Jaguar with a Samsung ML-1210. When I print it works
half of the time. Many times nothing at all happens other than one flash of the data
light, occasionally the data light will blink like it is working...then nothing,
occasionally the lights blink, printer warms upnothing. The only way I have been
able to fix this problem is to disconnect the USB cable and plug it back in.

This can be a real pain since some days I do a tremendous amount of printing. I have
seen some posts about resetting permissions, but those seem to be about no activity or
printing. I get to print, it is just a gamble if it will work. I ran the disk utility
to correct permissions and it found some relating to printing and fixed them, but all
is still the same. Since I am new to Unix, I am a little scared of starting to hack
via the terminal without absolute proof that thisd is what I need to do.

I am aware that Samsung's driver's are still beta, but they worked in 10.1.5. It was
slow as molasses, but worked.

Thanks, but does it allow adjustments of each track's volume on a CD you burn from
iTunes? He doesn't necessarily want the volumes equal, and as I said, I wanted to know
if this applies just for playback or for burning as well.

Thanks,

iTunes question (little OT)

2002-09-12 Thread Marty Lindower

Hi all-

My music teacher wants to buy an iBook (so this isn't _that_ far OT), and had
a question. He wants to be able to adjust the volume on a per-track basis of songs
that he'll import from some CD's he's burned. I know that iTunes will let you adjust
the volume and EQ for playback, but I seem to recall that these volume/EQ settings
don't affect the volume of tracks burned onto CD's via iTunes. Is this correct? If so,
does he also need Toast/Jam etc or some other app to do this?

TIA,
Marty Lindower

Re: firewire card in Lombard with 10.2

I am using a Firewire card from OrangeMicro in my Lombard and I am

As to why your card is not showing up, I have no idea. Sorry.

I believe I recently read an article about the high levels of CC fraud
in international orders, because of the difficulty in confirming
validity of cards/addresses etc. At least enough to cut the average
profitability of overseas orders to where it's not worth doing, and a
lot of companies that had shipped overseas were cutting back to a few

returns. (Just reporting what I read - doesn't mean all foreign

firewire card in Lombard with 10.2

2002-09-12 Thread April Westberg

I recently upgraded my Lombard to 10.2 since then I have been unable to

Now when I connect my camera in iMovie and try to import footage, it

Charging and shut-down problems aside, I realized that
I'd overlooked your comments below in my response. If

1. Charge the battery all the way up, if you can;
2. Drain it all, if you can, until the machine goes dead;
3. Recharge battery all the way, if you can;
4. Zap PRAM;
5. Reset Power Manager button;
6. Restart;
7. Shut down and take the battery out for the night, making sure the
battery's "posts" are free of junk;
8. Try it again after a break.

Re: Wallstreet Battery Not Seating Right (?)

2002-09-12 Thread Jeff Lentz

Unfortunately this is a common problem, and also
unfortunately, I've never known the torx screw
adjustment to correct it. I have had the same problem
twice, where you ever so gently touch the battery and
the laptop just dies. Even after "repair", it still
happens occasionally. Apple Service Center replaced
internal boards to solve the problem. Popping the
battery out and back in every so often, and perhaps
checking to see if the contacts are clean, may seem to
help somewhat, but no guarantees. I just naturally
favor that side now...

Re: WallStreet Battery Problem

2002-09-12 Thread Jeff Lentz

I've not heard of this problem associated with the
battery. One of your two cards is most likely the
culprit. Try pulling them both and seeing if you have
any more problems.

Re: Pixels, problems, repairs, laptops. etc

2002-09-12 Thread David M Kiely

I fully concur with Chris. And may I say that I don't understand the
reluctance of American companies to ship to Europe. It isn't as if we're
living on the moon here; looked at in mileage terms, New York is as far from
California as London is from New York. I regularly send items by courier to
the States, and the cost is only marginally higher than shipping to, say,
Germany. Why should freight charges be so high then? And postage? One only
has to visit the US Mail site to check the rates and, compared to those in
the UK, they're very reasonable; this is to be expected when considered in
terms of the economy of scale. IMHO a US company that overcharges foreign
customers is guilty of bad marketing; to do so is to limit one's customer
base.
