My goodness, is it that hot?
I remember it being rather hot when I used a PBG4 667MHz, but it wasn't
uncomfortable or anything.
If your unit is still under warranty, why not bring it into Apple to have
them take a look at it?

Regards,
Mark.

Have you tried turning of the File Exchange control panel extensions? I
don't remember if there is an extension or two with the control panel or
not. I used to have floppy freezing problems on an older OS, and it was
always related to PC Exchange. I can't say it will work, but if floppies
start to work again... :-)

This is not theft and is very offensive to call it that, but it seems
some lads have special privileges in the sand box.
FWIW First for getting up to see what the problem was you were being a
good citizen and second intelligent to make sure your insurance policy
included coverage for expensive computer equipment
The policy has clear limits, if you were anywhere near not meeting
the limits of the policy you can be sure your your claim would have
been denied. It does not matter what a bunch of coffee drinking buddies
sitting down on a job think, or posters on a list for that matter, it
is the insurance companies decision based on a legal document between
you and the insurance company. In fact some insurance companies
specialize in computer theft and accidents a niche market but fills the
need.
Your situation was clearly an accident and that is exactly what
insurance covers, accidents. This is not finding a loophole. You paid
premiums for just this possibility, probably higher ones as the
coverage was good. Now unfortunately it is time to collect fairly what
is covered. Unfortunately you will not replace what you had, you will
only get partial replacement. Filing a legitimate claim does not drive
up rates, it is factored in as part of doing business, a tax write off
for the Insurance company. There is no controversy here. No scam, no
fraud, no immoral actions, just a legal contract and a honest good
citizen.
Some of the more ridiculous points about throwing the computer at the
perpetrators head, well first that would probably would not be covered
by your insurance and unless you were in grievous fear of your life
then the person throwing the computer could be arrested for assault,
yes dumb I agree. Grabbing a 9 mm to investigate a problem outside,
well you better read up on your gun laws. Only in the instance of you
again fearing for your life, with no other avenue of escape can you
point the gun, let alone use deadly force with a gun. I do support the
right to bear arms, but you better know when and how you can use a
weapon. I listened to a lawyer in class for 3 days explain when you
could and could not use deadly force, which does not make me an expert,
but clearly use of force with a firearm it is very limited and
litigious.
Insuring a expensive computer is a wise choice or at least one that
should be brought up, too bad anyone with a view not agreed on the
list, by a few, get such harsh treatment, throwing slurring innuendoes
because they disagree. That's not being a team player and again just
makes people not want to support this community because they may be
flamed for a question. But then we just have to look where it comes
from. Healthy disagreement is good but people should not be insulted,
we have enough of that in this world.
Mike you did a brave thing and I am glad you got some compensation for
the damages caused by the accident, the thieves were caught and nobody
was hurt, and if no one else will apologize to you for your treatment
here I will and do. It is just wrong to insult people for asking a
question or doing a good thing.
Geoff

Re: Ti Book overheating problem (again)

2002-11-25 Thread Mark_PHILIP

Hi Lawrence,
Try using something to raise the rear of the PowerBook G4 up. You could use
2 large rubber erasers and place them underneath the rear feet of the
PowerBook. That will allow some circulation of air in the rear side, hence
lowering the temperature a little. I believe the Coolpad also does the same
thing, albeit with more finesse...

Cheers,
Mark.

We were talking about the heat generation from my Ti Book, and I
wanted to add to the discussion that the main culprit is having the
mains charger left plugged in.

If I unplug it when the battery if full, the temperature drops by quite
a lot, but if I leave it in even when the battery is full the back of the
base, below the screen gets very hot.

I use it as a desktop unit for 8-12 hours per day, so having to
unplug and reconnect it all the time is very boring.

I use a PowerBook as I also work at home.

I had two screen problems with my Pismo in the first
year of ownership.

First one column of pixels went bad (green stripe) 6
months after getting the machine back (with a new
screen), I got 'pink screen'. Over the course of a
week it got worse and affected open documents,
desktop, drop-down menus - everything.

I had the screen replaced (again) under warranty and I
haven't had a problem since (18 months).

fingers crossed

Re: Insurance Coverage on BeerBooks et al

2002-11-25 Thread Justin
wasnt going to get into this one.but figured i might as well.

i think whats going on, is people are making it an issue of morality,
less so much a legality. if a company agrees to pay you for your
neglect or clumsiness, thats their right to do so, its their business,
and if their policy allows for it, then don't worry about it.
if you make up some story about a robber coming in and dropping it on
his way out the door.its still a matter of the company deciding
whether or not its within their policy to provide reimbursement, but
then you run into mr. hanson's point, being the morality of it...is it
correct to use insurance which is intended to provide for crimes and
'acts of "god"' to cover your neglect?
im leaning towards the legal aspect. if the company provides for it,
given a truthful claim, theres no problem. if it was a problem, they
wouldnt pay you.

my toonie. (i think my opinion is worth more than a couple cents ;)

Sometimes we put a little too much stock into what we (and our friends)
think. I'm wondering if anyone took the time to look at one or two
insurance contracts?

The contract specifies what are termed "covered perils" upon which the
premium rates for that particular coverage are structured. It matters
not what you or I think it should or shouldn't say, or whether you or I
agree with what it does say, but rather what the contract specifies.
If we disagree with the terms, we can choose to join a different pool
of insured by buying a different contract, possibly from a competing
insurer. Different contracts have different specifications (and, very
likely, different pricing). Contracts that include "stupid people
tricks" among it's covered perils will likely be priced higher than a
similar contracts whose owners need to be more responsible. In the
case of insurance contracts, you pay for the coverage you get (in the
specifications). Whether a claim is or isn't filed (for a covered
peril) is up to the individual. That's the way it works. Insurance
companies simply offer products with features that customers seem to
want -- and are willing (or gullible enough) to pay for -- and the
product is priced accordingly.

I asked a group of my friends and co-workers this morning and *all* of them
thought that it was an accident on your part and that your insurance company
should not be held responsible. My friend Theo stated that if you had used
the powerbook as a weapon and hurled it at the vandals/burglers then he
thought that it should be covered, but since you just dropped it rushing out
to investigate it was your fault and you should be responsible for it.

> I have respected your extensive contribution to the list, but I feel that in

I did not call *you* a thief. All I said was that is seemed a bit like
theft. Insurance fraud is a huge problem in this country.

Lets say that some normal "joe" accidentally dropped his laptop and cracked
the LCD. What's to stop him from making up a story that "my house was being
broken into, and I leaped up and dropped my powerbook" on a whim. He could
then call the police and file a report, without anyone ever having been
there, take the padded estimate and go to eBay and buy a Pismo.

I have no doubt that your story is true, I am just illustrating a point.
But since another list member stated that insurance companies will pay for
an "act of stupidity" then I guess whatever! All the others whose
premiums go up as a result of people filing claims like that one will no
doubt be happy as well.

The way I was raised would not allow me to do that. I accept responsibility
for my actions. Even if I was doing a noble thing by stopping a rash of
home vandalisms, I would not have filed a claim for dropping my laptop on my
way to the door. I guess it's just me.

Re: Wallstreet screen and Jaguar

2002-11-25 Thread sean weijand
My Wallstreet II does not do this now that I have finally got OS X 10.2
installed, BUT, on start-up the startup screen seems to be some kind of
cross between OS X 10.1 happy mac and the spinning icon of 10.2. The
spinning icon is also not rendered(?) correctly kind of like the screen
colours/resolution were off.

My Wallstreet 300 experiences the same screen behaviour under 10.2.2
It didn't under 10.2. No hard drive whines though.

My screen has been pink in the corners and botchy elsewhere upon starting
for most of this year, but the pink disappears after a short warm-up. It
hasn't affected function. I've had some dire predictions from some folks
(usually the folks that do repairs and screen-changes), but haven't acted on
any change yet.

I intend to make a move to a newer iBook probably -- when the time is right,
and I just hope that the Pismo keeps humming and defies screen demise until
then.

Perhaps it's worse that I know, since I'm somewhat red-green colorblind! T

Back when I had my Wallstreet (PDQ) 300, I was running 10.1 and never
noticed this behavior. So, I don't think that this is normal. Can't say what
is wrong, though, specially as you note, it doesn't exhibit this under 9.

If you were installing on an older PowerBook (Wallstreet), you would have to
install OS X within the first 8 GB of the disk, but other than that, I can't
see any reason of installing one before the other. If your disk is
completely empty, you might want to start installing OS 9 first, then boot
from the OS X installer CD and install OS X.

I should note, though, that you don't have to have them in separate
partitions to use them separately. You can have OS9 and OSX on the same
partitions and just boot one or the other...

having things on separate partitions does improve data security in a
crash though. I have all myy OSX and OS9 stuff in s single partition,
and I have a separate smaller partition with OS9 as an emergency boot
partition. If you make that the first partition on the drive, you an
force it to boot by holding down D when the computer starts up. That
way you can force either OSX or OS9 to boot, depending on your needs.

I think that's a good setup. It keeps OS X and OS 9 on separate partitions,
so if, for any reason, you need to re-install one or the other, you don't
have to install both. Your data would also be safe. All in all, that's my
preferred way of partitioning for both OS X and 9.

Re: *Entourage, iCal, or Palm Desktop?

2002-11-25 Thread John Beringer
I like the Entourage/iCal combo. E-mail in Entourage, which I find easier
and more practical but not faster than Eudora, and my calendar appointments
in iCal. What I like about iCal is the possibility to create and 'publish'
web-based calendars so that anyone, with any system, can go and view them.

The only CD format available in 10.2 is a hybrid that works with both
Macs and PC's. So burn away. (Betcha *they* can't do that!)

Let's not get confused comparing apples and oranges, CPUs and the
computers they go in.

When the G4 was first introduced, benchmark after benchmark found it was
no faster than the G3 -- until they created benchmarks that used the
AltiVec version of Photoshop, etc. In that era, unless you used Photoshop
or did video editing, the G4 had no advantage over the G3.

Both processors have evolved since then. Today they each have an on-chip
level 2 cache that runs at full CPU speed. They support faster bus
speeds. And there have been other minor tweaks as well. Todays G3 and G4
performance can not be directly equated with the differences back when
the G4 first shipped.

But the big change came with Mac OS X, the first Mac OS to use the
"velocity engine" by default. At this point, I would hesitate to
recommend buying a new G3 model if you ever plan to run OS X. AltiVec
makes that much difference with Aqua -- or at least it did before Quartz
Extreme.

Looking at the computers themselves, if you would benefit from the
additional screen real estate, the ability to have a second monitor, or
Mac OS X, seriously consider the PowerBook G4.

If 1024x768 is fine, you don't need screen spanning, and you don't intend
to migrate to OS X (or do, but don't need the best performance), the
iBook is a stunning value.

Issues such as system bus pale in comparison to things like video chips,
drive speed, screen resolution, etc. Those are the real world differences
that impact your ongoing use of the computer far more than a 25%
difference in bus speed.

Count me among them. Best solution: I now use a wireless mouse and
keyboard at home.

better all-in-one solution for managing my contact lists, do e-mail and

Just my 2 cents worth...

The iBook also has but one slot for RAM, and you cannot even put in a
new hard drive yourself. Its A/V capabilities are limited, too, but it
is designed as a hyperportable / low end item.

I don't find the cardbus as useful as it once was. Certain cardbus
items (ex. peripheral hard drive shuttle) cannot be read in OS X. It is
convenient to transfer digital camera pictures via PCMCIA Compact Flash
adapter rather than dragging my EasyShare dock on the road. Infrared
has its uses now, but it will soon be going the way of the Dodo with
the ascendance of Bluetooth for digicams, camcorders, printers, and
cell phone/PDA's.

It all depends on the insurance coverage. Yes, even carelessness can be
covered (heck, even stupidity can be covered). That's why they call it
insurance. You can even insure yourself against claims for excessive
violence and lost future earnings from thieves (or their heirs) that you
shoot while they're burgling your house. And you needn't even worry about it
somehow not feeling "OK". Ain't free enterprise great?

With all due respect , not all of us have (or want) a 9mm around in case
of such emergencies.
In the case of such kind of intrusion, one does what one has to do. We
all are different,
as are our responses in this respect. What was done, in this case, was
both herioc and
resulted in the capture of the criminal, WITHOUT any undue harm or loss
of life.

This kind of action should be applauded, period!

Adding OS 9 Drivers after the fact

2002-11-25 Thread Ryan Lee
First the question:

Can I safely add OS9 drivers to my 10.2.2 disk without having to reformat
the drive? If so, how?

Now the explanation:

When I upgraded to 10.2, I formatted the drive and installed everything
anew. When it asked if I wanted to add OS9 drivers I said "no" because I
didn't think I needed OS9 again as I had updated all of my software to OSX.
Well, for a couple of months I did not need OS9 at all. This weekend I
discovered a need to open some old WordPerfect files and I needed to keep
the formatting correct, so I copied the OS9 folder from an old backup and
installed my old copy of WordPerfect without a hitch in classic. I was able
to run WordPerfect in classic and make the necessary changes. I couldn't get
it to print properly from classic so I decided to boot into 9 and do my
printing. That's when the trouble began.

When I restarted it came up with the blank disk and a question mark. I then
remembered that the disk had no OS9 drivers and would not boot into 9 but I
couldn't find a way to reset the startup disk. I couldn't get any key
combination to force it to boot back into OSX. Booting off the OS9 CD didn't
work because the hard drive wouldn't mount. Booting off of the OSX install
CD wouldn't work because I couldn't get access to the drive to make any
changes. I finally came up with the solution of booting into firewire target
disk mode because luckily I had access to another Pismo this weekend. I was
able to boot that computer connected to my computer over firewire, and mount
my disk on its' desktop. I went to the startup disk system preferences,
selected the system on my computer, reboot, and it booted up as my computer.
I shut them both down and then my computer restarted under its' proper OSX
startup.

In addition to my first question:

What's the best way to boot my computer into OSX to get access to the hard
drive in case of an emergency? I may not have access to the second computer
next time.

Observation:

OSX shouldn't allow us to be able to choose OS9 as a startup system if the
drive has no OS9 drivers on it, or at least run some kind of check and give
a warning before we commit to the change.

Thanks,

Ryan

Again, how is submitting an honest claim a "scam?"

Re: Dead Internal Battery on my Pismo?

2002-11-25 Thread Joe Ellis
The internal battery on your Pismo is there to aid in holding memory
contents during a battery swap and to support some power manager functions.
It is not difficult to replace, if you lift the keyboard and pull the right
side battery or CD drive and look down and to the right of the center of the
machine, it sits right there in plain view. The battery is designed to last
for 4 to 5 years so I doubt that it is the source of problem, but the power
manager may be, so check out the procedure for resetting it. <
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 >

If you decide to replace it; you can order a replacement from <
http://www.pbparts.com > and get instructions on how at the same place.

Please, tell me you aren't serious. Insurance companies don't lose
money.
Homeowners covers accidental damage. If you submit an honest claim and
they agree to pay where is the controversy?

Powerbook opinion

2002-11-25 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Hello,

I use a Powerbook G4 550, and my fiancee uses an iBook, so I've compared
them quite a bit. The newer Powerbooks do not have an irda port, but mine
does, and I love it, especially for synching to my handheld while on the
road, no need to drag around extra cradles and cords. I also cannot
overstate the usefulness of the cardbus slot, which gives great
expandability to the Powerbook. The iBook has neither irda nor cardbus.

Must be a problem with the floppy drive itself, then. I don't have one, but
you could maybe try to open it to blow air in it to clean it.

Well, it can't be that, because I was not using any Logitech drivers and it
was happening. I downloaded the Logitech drivers because I thought they
might fix the problem. I used this same mouse with no additional drivers
under 10.1.5 for months with no problems... so it must be something

Burn Windows CD on iBook?

Hi all-

Has OS X.2 suddenly taken away the option to burn a Windows compatible
CD? I had thought that when you insert a blank CDR, my iBook would ask what

My cat liked to sit on top of my $800.00 Sony Amplifier that I had in my
Home Theatre System. One night I heard a very violent popping noise. After
investigating I realized she had vomited into it while it was on. The
popping was it shorting out. I had to dry it out and have it cleaned and
repaired. I never considered having my insurance pay for it. Moral of the
story...Make sure to buy anti- furball food for your cat and don't scam your
insurance company if at all possible. :-)

No offense, but you feel it "OK" to ask your insurance company to pay for
something like that? That seems a bit like theft to me. Can some other
homeowners chime in and tell me that this is the norm? If I dropped my

Your policy will usually have an electronics and/or computer coverage
rider built in. Unfortunately, the $$ amt is usually VERY minimal ( about
$100 or so) You can and should get additional coverage by buying a separate
rider that is fairly inexpensive. You need to contact the agent and provide
the info..brand, type , value, etc also very important is that you have
replacement value coverage rather than the normal coverage provided. This
ensures that you should get the cost of a current equivalent ,or better, if
an original isn't available. This coverage is also minimally priced and is
well worth it. I speak from personal experience...
About 1 1/2 yrs ago, my home was vandalized late at night while I
was up
and working on my wife's ThinkPad 550...Heard noise outside, ran to the door
and dropped the 550... The display cracked and some stuff came loose
inside..submitted a claim to Nationwide, they got an estimate of over $1000
to repair it so they sent me a check for $985 (after deductible)which I
promptly used towards buying a Pismo on ebay.
Moral of the story...Make sure that you have an insurance
policy...as an
apt dweller, your personal possessions are NOT covered by the bldg. owner's
coverage..if there is a fire and your stuff is burned and you don't have
your own renter's policy, you are SOL. If you are a homeowner, the coverage
is there but minimal..this goes for cameras, coin collections, cash,
collectibles etc UNLESS declared and covered in advance.
Regards and HTH,
Mike K

Ti Book overheating problem (again)

2002-11-25 Thread Laurence - SMT Tricept
We were talking about the heat generation from my Ti Book, and I
wanted to add to the discussion that the main culprit is having the
mains charger left plugged in.

If I unplug it when the battery if full, the temperature drops by quite
a lot, but if I leave it in even when the battery is full the back of the
base, below the screen gets very hot.

I use it as a desktop unit for 8-12 hours per day, so having to
unplug and reconnect it all the time is very boring.

I use a PowerBook as I also work at home.

Any suggestions

Laurence

PC100 and PC133 ram will work okay in the Lombard (and Wallstreet and
original iMacs), BUT only if it's made according to those Macs'
specifications. i.e., not ALL PC100 and PC133 ram will work in those Macs.

So be sure to buy memory that is specifically advertised as compatible with
those Macs and comes with a free exchange guarantee and lifetime warranty.

Solid online stores that sell this ram include OWC (which offers free
exchange and lifetime warranty)

and Transinternational (do a web search).

Re: Installing OS X 10.2 on Wallstreet Help!

2002-11-25 Thread sean weijand
Success!
I was able to install without any problems by using my external scsi
cdrw drive. Other than the OSX 10.2 discs i have never had any trouble
with my built-in drive so who knows? but am in business now.

tks for your feedback.

: That shouldn't be a problem.

It might (I haven't seen anyone posting that they've successfully used
faster RAM on slower machines). And if it's stacked memory, it will not
be fully recognized by Lombard PowerBooks.
