replacement drive for dual usb ibook 500

2005-01-19 Thread Alex Santos 100MB Neostrada Mail
Does anyone know which drive, brand and model number apple used in the
dual usb ibook g3?

It looks like my cd ROM drive bit the bullet and I want to replace it
with a drive 100% compatible. I would also like a drive I can have the
plastic silver plate put back on easily without any modification.

An Apple branded replacement drive is insanely expensive hence my
search.

Re: Painting AlBook ???

From: Aase Marit Waage [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Have you seen a laptop painted with a motif? You wouldn`t be afraid that it
could sort of ruin the simple elegance the PB has - the sort of minimalist
style?
The thing is, I am a serious Mac fanatic, ask anyone who knows me,
however, I wouldn't steer my creativity based on the style set out by
Apple. What I would do with a Mac (I have many plans) is not affected
by Apple or their style, more my own imagination.
Take a look at:
http://www.paintedbytes.com/
http://www.applefritter.com/hacks (Click on laptop mods)
Now, I am not saying that many (or any) of these are nice,
but it is all what the owner likes that matters.
Regarding the keyboard...
I checked with a Mac support place and the price for a Mac
keyboard is UNBELIEVABLY EXPENSIVE and as it is not a
user changeable part, even if the PowerBook is out of
warranty, you cannot buy it with them changing it, even
if I have/will completely disassemble the entire PowerBook
and repaint it...
I am seriously investigating pinting the keys!!!
Oh, and I keep my nails trimmed, as this I am sure has a big
effect on the longevity of the print, even on the old black G3
PowerBooks. I just sold my wife's Lombard and half the key
were hardly distinguishable...
To me it looks very doable, the biggest problem is that the
keyboard isn't actually the same layout. The Swedish return
key is vertical while I believe the US is horizontal...
Time will tell (as Robert Nesta Marley said...)

Until resale time rolls around, anyway
Yes, that is one consideration, but I have had enough of
me changing my Macs every other week (slight exageration)
and never being able to settle. I am pretty good at finding
cheap Macs but then find the temptation of selling them
too much.
I have so far built up a cash buffer of about the value of
a new iBook, and having paid back the starting capital.
As I said, I now need to settle down with one Mac that fits
my needs, hence all the toing and frowing with which model.
My reasoning with the painting is that if I buy a dented PB
G4 Alu which has already got a lower value, I'm not going to
harm the value by repairing it and repaingting it.
In any case, it is the USE that is the value not the resell value!!
I hate it when you see ads where people are selling a Mac
with the text paid $4000 five years ago, want $3000...
Forgetting actual hardware depreciation, five years of use
costs more than $200 per year!!!

The tiBook had pretty lousy reception, no doubt. The alBooks are much
better; mine goes the same places my iBook did and gets reception. I don't
want to make any general claims about iBook vs alBooks because in many cases
we wind up comparing 802.11b to 802.11g rather than iBook to PowerBook -
some iBooks have airport while others have airport extreme and since they
look so much alike it takes a pretty savvy Mac user to know the difference.

Airport (802.11b) has a slightly larger effective range than Airport Extreme
(802.11g). In addition you can think of Airport's reception as a circle;
inside the circle you have a signal and good speed. Airport Extreme is like
a circle within a circle; inside the smaller circle you get high speed
reception and when you step outside that your speed drops to 802.11b speeds.

Apple says 2nd quarter and given past similar pronouncements I'd say
probably late May to July.

What will happen to prices of the iBooks ? Specs ?

Prices of new machines will stay the same or drop slightly while speeds and
capacity go up. I've read several rumors that G5 iBook and PowerBook
contracts have already been let and we'll see them in March. I'd love to
believe it but I don't. I'd be really surprised if we don't hear about a
speed bump sometime in late winter or spring and the G5 this summer at the
earliest. And no, I have no insider information other than knowledge of the
insides of the EasyBake G5 PowerMac. When Apple said thermal issues are
significant I hear a massive understatement.

Twice I have bought a PowerBook (through work) and weeks
afterwards a revision was released. First the TiBook 550 with
DVD, three weeks later, Combo. And then my current AlBook
1GHz Combo, two weeks later, SuperDrive... :o(

It happens and I have only one piece of advice for avoiding that problem.
Buy a Mac within a month or two of their release. That can be somewhat
dangerous but I've been doing it for 10 years and the closest I've gotten to
a lemon was my current 15 alBook which went back for a new screen. Of
course I've also avoided the first release of massively changed models. I
didn't buy a tiBook until the first revision (which I wound of selling after
a month because I hated it) and until the luxor iMac I never bought an iMac
at all.

US. Even after shipping and tax these work out slighly cheaper than a
standard 5400mAh battery bought here. (Don't ask me why :)

Any comments, or alternative suggestions?

I don't see any responses from anyone else so here's my two bits
(about 0.13 pounds :-). I got a 5400mAh battery from PowerBook Medic
last summer that has worked out just fine. I don't do a lot of
battery-based work as the Pismo is essentially my desktop machine,
but the times that I do unplug and go battery it seems to hold a
decent charge of 3.5 to 4 hours. OWC beats PBM on pricing hands
down--the reasons I went through PBM for that order are a bit long
and involved and not particularly worth going into. I shop with OWC
for parts, too.

Thanks Carl. Actually I went ahead and bought the 7200mAh battery from
OWC. Ordered from Illinois Friday, arrived UK Monday :) Haven't actually
got round to installing it yet!

A related issue: at the same I also bought a Micro Accessories power
adaptor for the pismo. This is sold as a Powerbook G3 adaptor, and I was
told that it is suitable for a pismo, but I noticed that it's rated at
65W, whereas the original Apple adaptor is 45W. I'm fairly sure this is
not a problem, but can anyone confirm that?

thanks,

No, with the current generation of machines the difference is generally
insignificant. The first lot of titanium PBs were pretty poor in this
respect, but Apple has largely fixed the problem in the aluminium PBs.

I think 3-6 months.
What will happen to prices of the iBooks ? Specs ?
There will almost certainly be a new generation of iBooks around by
then, probably with upgraded graphics cards as current iBooks don't
offer full support for CoreImage. PowerBooks do, which is something
that you should consider when making your decision. Unless you want to
wait months before getting a new computer, you'll have to buy Tiger
separately, so this doesn't really enter into the equation.

Twice I have bought a PowerBook (through work) and weeks

PowerBook updates could come within weeks. iBook updates are a bit
further away, but still likely within the same timeframe as Tiger's
release.

Consequential damage from any type of impact can cause hidden damage that

the worst things that could happen but would you want to even play with that
possibility ??

Unless you are backing up your stuff on a regular or even daily basis (for
businesses), a hard drive failure can have serious consequences for anybody
- including those of a financial nature related to downtime without the
computer and losing important files.

It just doesn't seem worth it to me. I would suggest the original poster
avoid the damaged laptop like the plague and either get another used one
that is still eligible for Applecare (the damaged one obviously is not) or
buy a new one.

Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

2005-01-19 Thread mray
At work we were using Powerbooks, and had a hard time keeping a signal
(Could also have been due to all the metal in the building). While I
have been using an iBook for over a year now and I am getting too many
signals now, All the apartments in my daughters complex, across the
street. And at my home (three story house) I can go to any room (plus
the basement) and get a signal as well as to my neighbors house or

Definitely wait for Tiger at this point.
I know no-one knows these things for sure, but what is likely
to happen when Tiger is released (and WHEN is that?).
What will happen to prices of the iBooks ? Specs ?
Twice I have bought a PowerBook (through work) and weeks
afterwards a revision was released. First the TiBook 550 with

1GHz Combo, two weeks later, SuperDrive... :o(

One tiny, probably insignificant data point:
I have a 1.5GHz Powerbook G4 and a friend had an iBook (unknown specs,
I think it was a 1.0Ghz or thereabouts).

I was getting 3 bars. He was getting 5. We were sitting next to each
other in a conference room.

Now you could say that I was getting a strong signal and he was getting
a very strong signal, and I didn't test to see whether either of us
could get outside the room. So this is all FYI/FWIW/YMMV.

I love my PB and still believe it was the right decision for me.
And I would still avoid a dropped laptop like the plague unless the
price was significantly lower.

Larry,

You should visit the website link provided as a reply to my initial message.
There are a lot of information in there that makes things more obvious.

Alternatively, if you're on OS X, you can use the Terminal to issue the
command 'drutil info'. That will list your drive specifications and what
format it supports. The Matshita UJ-825 in the PowerBook 17 supports both
DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W, according to drutil. I wish Apple would list this info
in the System Profiler output...

Re: iTunes in Norway on iBook from Denmark (Was: Setting up a prev. owned iBook)

According to the big red law book which I actually own copies of, we

however choose to make copies to sell or distribute, then you are
breaking the law. That we still have this legislation here, has been
subject to a lot of discussion, but the law still says this, and I
really don`t think it will be changed anytime soon...
Actually I just read a long article about it, and there is no
disagreement when it comes to interpreting this law, it is crystal
clear (I promise you, the record companies do not like this one bit).
Bottom line - as a Norwegian citizen, keeping one copy for myself of
whatever it is in iTunes, is completely legal. I am fully aware of
the fact that the laws says otherwise e.g. in the US, but I really
don`t have any obligation towards US law except for when I am
there... :)
I appreciate very much that you bought you iBook with all its software
media. And I think I understand that you are in compliance with
Norwegian law. However, I also understand that the issue with iTunes
involves an formal agreement that someone had with Apple, in effect, a
license.

I do not know the terms of the license to which the previous owner of
your iBook in Denmark agreed. But I suspect it included statements
prohibiting or controlling further distribution or sale. If so, the
previous owner may have obligated himself to remove the music from the
iBook. By the same token, I suspect the license is mute regarding any
third party who may acquire the music, as in your case.

SNIP
I must say though, I was really disappointed to find out that iTunes
Music Store is not available for us here. I would love to use it, and
download music to enjoy. I figured that I could just access it e.g.
in the US, but I just get a window saying that it is not available in
my country...
I also suspect that Apple prevents you from accessing the Music Store
in Norway because of Norwegian law.

Well, another thing to consider is that any music downloaded off of
iTunes
Music Store won't be able to be accessed unless he keeps the former
user's
account. If the former owner is 'OK' with this then. But I
doubt it.
It's just sad that we even have to remind others of the obvious. I
will
continue my attempts at 'tikkun olam', but experience tells me that
it's an
uphill battle.

Tim
Now comes an interesting question. Are you enjoying the music? Or is
Tim correct in his statement that you cannot access the music on the
hard drive?

radii is the plural of radius.
Higher bandwidth will be more affected by signal degradation than lower.
Wooden walls would not block radio waves a whole lot. My house is all
concrete block, and my Airport Base Station is reachable from
everywhere in it.

Metal, such as reinforcing rods in concrete, conduits, plumbing and
wiring in regular walls and buildings constructed of steel framing are
going to cause greater range problems than wood.

Haven't really seen how far outside I can pick it up, but it's near a
window and exterior wall, it should be a fair distance.

Do extra antennas on the basestation make a big difference ?
Yes they do. Do be careful, however as you can run afoul of whatever
your local equivalent of the FCC is if you cause interference with
other systems.

People have achieved quite long ranges with modified base stations.,
but the tradeoff is directionality. The farther you want to go, the
more directional your antenna must be. (google 'cantenna' or 'pringles
can antenna' for lots of DIY solutions.)

wouldn't be a problem.

On the other hand, if there were such an agreement, in the current

Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

2005-01-19 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Ben Dyer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Although you should be careful, if the logic board has been replaced, and
the display is working fine, the worst that is likely to happen is a hard
disk or optical drive failure. How long has the machine been operating
since it was repaired?
I went to look at the PowerBook today, the gey's a web designer
and is still using it.
1. Car accident, the front left corner got bashed, smaller dent than
   I thought.
2. Later on (seperate incident) he damaged the sound out port when
he used it as a huge iPod and got the cable caught on a door
   handle... :o/
3. Then the SuperDrive stopped working and he took it in for
warranty repairs, they replaced the mobo due to the port and
the SuperDrive as it had packed up.
That's it. It actually sounds a lot more straight forward than I
initially thought.
---
There will almost certainly be a new generation of iBooks around by then,
probably with upgraded graphics cards as current iBooks don't offer full
support for CoreImage. PowerBooks do, which is something that you should
consider when making your decision. Unless you want to wait months before
getting a new computer, you'll have to buy Tiger separately, so this
doesn't really enter into the equation.
I went in to a local Apple dealer and compared the iBook 12 and
the PowerBook 12 (albeit newer than the one I'm looking at) and
there is a significant difference in the screen quality and I asked about
this. They said that the actual screen is the same, but the video card
difference has that effect, which actually rules out the iBook for me.
So the 1GHz 12 PowerBook Al supports CorelImage ???

he used it as a huge iPod and got the cable caught on a door

 3. Then the SuperDrive stopped working and he took it in for
warranty repairs, they replaced the mobo due to the port and
the SuperDrive as it had packed up.

That's it. It actually sounds a lot more straight forward than I
 initially thought.

I guess you will be the one making the final decision so it's up to you.
People here are just making suggestions/recommendations based on your
initial post.

In my view, any laptop that has an impact may harbour hidden problems.
I.e. I am not sure how it got damaged in this car accident :

1. Was it in a case and fell of the seat

OR

2. Did he just have it sitting on the front seat (out of a case) and it
slammed into the door or floor on impact.

Either way, any impact that left a dent, regardless of the size, would cause
me concern.

Anyway, it's up to you. You're the one that's going to be using it, not us.
If you feel comfortable with it - go for it. If you have any doubts, look
for something else.

AlBook 12, 768MB RAM, better videocard, (also Xtreme), SuperDrive

65% of the cost of a box stock (albeit faster) AlBook 12 with less RAM.

Then, I think you should go for the AlBook. Does it still have AppleCare? If
it does, that would be pretty much a no brainer...

Not only is a dropped laptop forever tainted IMO, but the iBooks are
said to have much better reception than the Powerbooks (I use mine

to me) and they have longer battery life.

I'll assume we're talking TiBk? AlBk reception and battery are at least
equal to the iBook. The only reason (?) to go for the TiBk over an AlBk
would be if you need to *boot* into OS 9.

The iBook is a great computer. The Powerbook was right for me for
other reasons, but given your situation I think the iBook is the clear
winner. Definitely wait for Tiger at this point.

Agreed...so I'd recommend that, if you can, put this purchase off until
June. Not only will the shipping version of Tiger likely be revealed, but
the rumours of the much anticipated PBk G5 could be settled. If you still
want a G4 PBk, I'm sure you'll get one for a significantly reduced price.

My house is stucco and that has chicken wire in it. The openings in

that the signal has to go through two exterior walls to reach my

My first base station was an SMC model and with it I couldn't get a
signal in the bedroom. My current base station, a Belkin, can be
heard through those walls, and pretty much every where else in the
house.

AFAIK there aren't any 2.4GHz phones near my house. And our
microwave oven doesn't produce any noticeable effects. There are
some other WANs around but I don't think I get much interference from
them.

In it yes, but I have a Swedish wooden house built in 1910 which
has been covered with bricks, but no metal structures.
I want to use my PowerBook outside in the garden which is about
16,500 square feet (1502 m^2) with several seating places.
That works out to a square 128' on a side. Close to the house you
should be able to work; it depends on where the base station is in the
house.

The linear distance from receiver to receiver is the key. 802.11b will
reach to about 150' (~46M). Apple says 802.11g reaches about 50' (~15M)
on their hardware page about the ABS Extreme.

Pretty basic stuff really, but I was merely thinking of a larger uni-

That's kinda weird. A good 11Mb/s connection should be well enough for a
Cable or DSL connection, even a T1. The wireless speed shouldn't affect the
download speed. Maybe the physical location of the Xtreme base station or
the laptop was not the same than with regular AirPort?

Actually, AppleCare does not cover accidental damage and any problems that
may appear to stem from that same impact. It already has a dent which would
signal physical damage immediately. I can't see them covering any kind of
future repairs on that PB.

I know Larry really wants the PB and it does appear to be a good deal but
with the impact, there could be all sorts of hidden costs down the road that
could easily exceed the cost of getting a brand new 12 iBook with some
extra RAM etc and which qualifies for AppleCare.

Technically your right. It should make no difference. All I can tell you, is
that both base stations were in the same spot, and I was only 12 feet away
right from the base distance, direct sight, no wall interference. I can't
explain it, but I'm much happier now.

Aaron

 Hmm, na..

 You had
187 kbps with 11Mb/s AirPort and
 378 kbps with 54Mb/s AirPort Xtreme ???

As both download speeds are much slower than the Airport
surely it can't be affected by the actual Wireless speed ???

Re: Painting AlBook ???

2005-01-19 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Larry,
I just have to say one thing though, I hold you
personally accountable for my home being messy
and that I didn`t even do laundry today ;) BGI
had big plans for doing _sensible_ stuff, instead
my _whole evening_ went poof - gone... Where I
have been all night? The applefritter site and
the other site you also gave me... I got
completely lost and time flew!!! And it is all
your fault!!! LOL

OK... So... I give in totally You convinced
me... I can just say one thing, if you can do
something like some of these, I will just take a
bow and say GO FOR IT Shoot, I hate to admit
it, but I even kind of liked the green book with
the flower pattern... Geeez, I never liked flower
patterned stuff... I just can`t believe it, but
it is just kind of cool... neat... fun
retro...

The only one that really made me go YIKES (big
time juck, juck, juck), was the one with the
spiders. I just waited for one of them to pop out
of my screen to come and get me Eew
I have to draw the line somewhere, and for me it
definately goes with insects and bugs, he-he...
Most of the books there were obviously real well
done, most seem to really know what they are
doing, and at least on the pictures, it seems
like they have done perfect jobs.

I just have to say, when you get there, you have
to share pics, or I will get grumpy, OK? :)

The only thing I am not too happy about, is that
now I want to play too :( As if I don`t have
enough not completed creative projects of
different sorts sitting here, he-he... Male
friends tease me all the time, for having more
tools and gadgets than them all combined... One
thing I don`t have and never tried though, is a
compressor and an airbrush... It sure looks like
a lot of fun!!!

When (or if, if you didn`t make a final decision)
you start, will you take step-by-step pictures
like some of these other people did? And ask them
to add it to the applefritter site? That would be
real neat...

The old PB electronic picture frames were neat
too. I had to resist an urge to give it a try,
but that I really don`t think would be a good
idea for me, I never opened a computer or did
anything that has to do with electronics, I can
only perform the most simple electric jobs, those
that we are allowed to do ourselves here. I do
have a deep respect for electricity, LOL... I
have only blown a main fuse and darked out the
whole house once, when I was 12 years old. I did
it right, just didn`t know about the importance
of insulation, he-he... Learned my lesson though,
after being subjected to an embarrassing serious
talk by our electrician family friend who came to
the rescue when the lights wouldn`t go on after
the ordinary main fuses were replaced (Boy was I
in trouble!) But with the help of a more
skilled person, and some careful planning, I am
sure I could do it... It would have been a lot of
fun to make one, including the frame itself (a
splendid occasion for using my fancy miter (sp?)
saw!)... It would have been great with an even
bigger one, to show photo art and other artwork
on... Oh well, it won`t happen anytime soon, but
in a couple of years, I will have a lot more time
on my hands!!! LOL BTW, I looked around on eBay
the other day, and there were so many old PB`s
there, really cheap. I saw two PB`s, one 170 and
one 165 that were ending in an hour or so, and
they were at $9.99... Of course a color screen
one would be more expensive, but it wouldn´t have
to cost much at all. The 170 was my first PB,
back in 1992, so I had to pull myself together to
resist bidding on it. It would have been a lot of
fun to own one again, just for the fun of it.
Boy that was an awesome computer back then,
everybody were jealous - I loved that computer...

In your other post you mentioned painting the
keyboard vs. getting a Swedish one. I really know
what you mean about the Enter key. I am having
real problems with it here too, as the Norwegian
keyboard also has the larger, partly vertical one
(like a flipped L, the International one plus
the key upside it to the right, combined). I keep
missing the Enter-key all the time. I have had a
little keyboard ordeal too. I won`t feel really
relieved until I have the new one here... I
Before I bought this iBook, I talked to the guy
who helped me pick all my previous Power Books.
He now owns his own business, but earlier he
worked as a consultant (at something like
Hjälpmedelverket), working with computers and
adapting them and accessories for people using
them as assistive technology because of
disabilities (The reason why I got my first PB
was that I have trouble writing because of a
disability I have, that is how I met him).
Bottom line is that every time my computer has
needed to be replaced, he has been there to help
me, so it felt sort of scary not having him to
guide me this time. I was so very happy when I
finally got hold of him on the phone. One main

Switching from a 5400rpm drive to a 7200rpm made a (relatively) huge
difference in speed to my iMac. If you can afford a 7200rpm laptop
drive (if possible with an 8MB or larger cache), go for it. Otherwise,
just getting the largest (capacity) hard drive you can find will make
things better, as OS X won't be as likely to run out of space and start
fragmenting all your files.

Ok, I buy that, but if we're talking about a smaller drive, in this
case a 40GB drive, surely we're talking ratio. If I keep it not much
more than 1/2 full, leaving at least 10GB of free space, this should
not be an issue... ?
Obviously going from 4200rpm to 7200rpm is the optimum but
how much does 4200rpm to 5400rpm actually do for performance
in terms of avgerage useage (not heavy Photoshop) ?

Replaced the AC/Sound card and problems went away. Proudly running

Try it, it will probably solve your problem. Wallstreet NOT R.I.P.

Re: AlBook harddrive upgrade ???

2005-01-19 Thread Andrew
I upgraded the 4200rpm 40GB drive in my rev B 12 to an 80GB 5400 rpm
TravelStar and would peg the speed boost at roughly 20% in disk-intensive
activities, like opening files and launching applications. Overall
performance isn't that different, probably because with 768MB of ram I don't
hit the HD often for virtual memory.

Still, it was really worth the money as I got double the space, an even
quieter drive and the speed is better, if not dramatically so. Battery life
seems about the same as well, no real penalty that I've noticed, certainly
under 10 minutes of loss.

Losing a few GB isn't crucial if it makes a big difference...

Go for the Powerbook... your gut instinct is the most important detail,
and the accident doesn't sound as bad as it initially did. Sounds
like you did the best thing, saw them,

TiBk Power Adapter options

2005-01-19 Thread Frank P. Eigler
So I've confirmed this thing is dead. The whiff of smoke, combined with
the slightly exposed wiring (insulation melted?) of the thin cable where
it enters the adaptor was a bit of a giveaway.

So I need a replacement, but I'm very hesitant to get another Apple
adaptor as this problem I encountered doesn't seem uncommon.

http://www.appleleak.com/B7IFJY/Apple_Extra_Portable_65W_Power_Adapter_for_iBook_and_PowerBook_G4.html
(4th review)

Any suggestins for an alternate?
Mine is the 65W Adapter, Model A1021 (as indicated on the unit)
or Mfr Part # M8934LLA (as per some web sites)

Thanks.

iBook no CD boot??

2005-01-19 Thread David Lesher
On a nearly new iBook; I needed to boot from CD to do a pw-force on the
root account.

No joy... the CD would appear on the hold option at powerup menu but
attempts to boot from it would get a ISO-type slashed circle. I tried
both a 10.3 and a 10.2 CD #1.

I then tried an external Firewire CD drive with the CD's in it. No joy
there either...

Plus, the (^* box would not relinquish the CD! I held shift and
powered up. It worked with one but not the other. It took logging in and
ejecting that way.

THEN on a 2nd newer iBook; the boot CD's would not appear on the
hold-option screen -- either the internal or the Firewire.

ARGH! Did Murphy follow me home or

Is this the CD that came with one of the newly iBook? Maybe it's bad?

coaster n.: 1. Unuseable CD produced during failed attempt at writing to
writeable or re-writeable CD media. Certainly related to the coaster-like
shape of a CD, and the relative value of these failures. I made a lot of
coasters before I got a good CD. 2. Useless CDs received in the mail from
the likes of AOL, MSN, CI$, Prodigy, ad nauseam.

Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

2005-01-19 Thread mray
True enough, I should have been clearer, they were the early aibooks,
again there was a lot of metal in the building, but when I had my ibook
at work (not often enough to reliably compare) I did not have the same
connection problems.

The two times I had one of the aibooks home the connection was solid,
but didn't really do much roaming.

Also would wireless b vs g have any effect on signal
strength/connectivity/range?

regards,
mark

One, the original Titanium Powerbooks had problems, the aluminum ones
have redesigned antennae and do not.

While I have been using an iBook for over a year now and I am
getting too many signals now, All the apartments in my daughters
complex, across the street. And at my home (three story house) I can
go to any room (plus the basement) and get a signal as well as to my
neighbors house or yard.

Two, signal reception is very environment dependent. You are talking
about three very different environments. the only way to reliably
compare would be to use the same systems at the same place.
