Re: Mac OS X 10.3.8 update.

2005-02-13 Thread Marcin Wichary
My 12 Powerbook would freeze like that if it was asleep and you
accidentally pulled the power cord out of the wall while it was still
attached to the machine...is this just how they work and you shouldn't
do that, an issue with certain Powerbooks, or something weird with my
old machine?
I think it's not only you. In my case I also narrowed it down to power
adapter -- if I disconnected it while my PB was sleeping, it was much
more likely that it wouldn't wake up.

With time I learnt the proper procedure: unplug everything and *then*
close the lid.

Didn't install 10.3.8 yet, but in any case, I am also afraid of testing
this. :)

The 17 didn't appeal to me due to the poorly designed keyboard.
Uh ?!
It has the smae keyboard as the 12 and the 15, full size,
and the best PowerBook keyboard ever made!! IMO.
I have a 12 and a 15 Alu.

not to mention ports on the side.
So that you don't have to turn the thing upside down everytime
you want to plu/unplug something.
Comparing my Alu Books to my 550 and 667DVI TiBooks,
there's no competition.
The AluBook is the best ever portable.
Planning to buy a new 15 with illuminated keyboard :o)

Fine but the PowerBook is a portable and is designed around the concept

never move it off the desk that doesn't make it a poor design as a

I agree with you about the practicality of the ports; I'm a Pismo owner,
but recently borrowed a 15 PB for a couple of weeks while the pismo was
being repaired. Of course the newer PB is a lovely machine in most
respects, but those cables sticking out of the side, right where I wanted
to put books and papers, really irritated me.

But given the screen hinge design, it's hard to see what they could do...

Pismo Plays DVD/ Can't Play CD

2005-02-13 Thread sacredsystem
Hi

My PowerBook (Pismo) can play DVD's without any problems, but can't
play a CD. When I try and play a CD all I hear is a clicking sound.
Anything I can do myself, or do I need to call the doctor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Graphic converter? It can batch process files but I'm not sure if this is

Another Kind of Dead Hard Drive

2005-02-13 Thread Jon Cunningham
All this talk of reviving dead hard drives inspired me
to make another attempt with my 60 gig FireWire
external, that quit on me a few months back.

Most of what was on it was backed up to CD's, but
there are few things that weren't. I would like to
find a way to recover them.

My drive has no problem spinning up, sounding like a
well-tuned jet turbine when it is running. When it's
time for it to kick in and start reading, however,
it just gives a few clicking noises and keeps on
spinning. The little green ready light LED does not
light up either.

I tried the freezer trick, and until it warmed up
again, it sounded like my old Ford pickup starting on
a below zero day. The clicks came, but it still
doesn't read, or show up on my desktop.

Does anyone have a home remedy for this?

Thanks,
Jon

For actually using in multiple locations and the frequent set-up and take-down
that
entails, Apple's current design is about the best I've come across. I
especially like
the slot-loading drives (side mounted like on the 12 please) which is just the
best
when using the computer anyplace OTHER THAN a roomy desk.

The 12 is really better in this area, which ALL ports on the left, and only
the optical

Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.

2005-02-13 Thread Andrew
It is also probably the best keyboard that Apple has ever put on a laptop.
Actually, it
may be the best that ANYONE has ever put on a laptop, with only IBM ThinkPads
giving it any real competition.

I think looking back, the best-feeling keyboard (nice action, few typos, high
speed)
was on my old THinkPad 600 back around 1998 or so. A friend has the new
ThinkPad T42 and I'd call it a toss-up with the current POwerBook. Keys are a
bit
springier on the ThinkPad, but a bit better shaped on the PowerBook (except for
the
arrow and function keys, which are a bit larger on the IBM.

Us PowerBookers have never had it this good, at least as far as keyboards go.

This might be related to the Battery monitor issue. Somewhere during the
updates some people lost battery time or had their PowerBooks shut down
early with the batterys showing 1/2 power or so.

Try resetting the power manager unit for your machine.
Try deleting the .plist file file for battery monitor (not sure of name).
Try deleting the battery monitor off the menu and using a shareware/freeware
monitor. I use Slim Battery Monitor.

One of these solutions should cure your wake from sleep issue.

Suggestions on how to diagnose the OS 9 boot process are welcome.
Mikael, I'll suggest some obvious ones, even though I'm sure you've
tried 'em.

1) Maybe the drive is about to go bad (if it's an LG) and it just is
coincidence that the CDs won't boot.

2) Are Mac OS 9 drivers installed on your hard drive? I know that's
almost automatic for most people, but I do recall that that was a
choice when I put Jaguar on my hard drive.

3) Maybe the CDs all have very slight (marginal) flaws on them, and the
one Pismo's drive is pickier than the others?

Yeah, mine freaked out during the blackout a year and a half ago,
because it was asleep and plugged in, then suddenly no power...

It had no issues with it not waking up from sleep if I put it to sleep
while on battery power, or put it to sleep plugged in and then pulled
the plug out of the Powerbook, only if I pulled the plug out of the
wall still attached to the machine.

This was the 12 aluminum one, I don't recall a friend's 15 TiBook
having any issues with sleeping and waking up while on battery power,
though it may never have been unplugged from the wall when the plug
was still in the computer.

the windows machine to just running my weather station app and get a mini! I
am determined to get away from PC¹s and have just got a sharp Zaurus to take

On the comment of cost. . .I wasn't talking about the end product cost,
I was talking about manufacturing cost that Apple would have to shell

 Zoltan,

I happened to hear a talk radio show last week hosted by Kim Komando.
I'd never heard of this program, but it was the audio being broadcast
on our FOX weather channel. She apparently answers all sorts of
computer questions on her radio show as well as her website. Every
question and answer I heard was Windows-related.

Anyway, she said that she had one time recommended to someone with an
apparently dead hard drive that they remove it from their computer,
freeze it overnight, pop it back into the computer and save the info
onto another hard drive. It was not the topic of conversation, but
just a mention of advice she had given on another program. I had NEVER
heard such advice, but here it was recommended by an expert on national
 talk radio.

So, now you are the second person I've heard mention freezing hard
drives as a last-ditch effort to retrieve info. Check out her site at
 www.komando.com --- maybe there's a mention of it there.

 Claire

Hi Claire and gang,

I just had to take Claire's suggestion and see what Kim Komando has to say
on her site. My first surprise was learning that she is America's Digital
Goddess®. I immediately realized I was off-base when I had conjured up an
image of Kim as a Camo-clad Action Figure. Whew, scary!

But to get back on track, here is Kim's advice, verbatum:

Now, the following may sound like a very strange recommendation. As a
matter of fact, I once told a guy to do this who called my show with a bum
hard drive. Afterwards, he didn't say a word until I told him that I was not
joking. He had nothing to lose so why not at least try it?

If a hard drive is dead, take it out of the computer, seal it in a plastic
bag and put it in a freezer overnight. Sometimes the cold causes the metal
to shrink enough to allow the drive's head to work. When you reinstall the
hard drive, move your data to a new hard drive quickly. Once it warms up,
any benefit from the cold will be gone.

Oh, about the caller who I gave that advice to... Well, he sent me a note
through my Web site that he was able to get the data off the drive before it
croaked for good.

I (Kenji) assume she is recommending this for drives that are no longer
working, the head is not articulating correctly...the infamous
clackity-clack clackity-clack clackity-clack adinfinitum...or worse.

If the drive is still functioning despite bad noises, back it up now!

Cheers,
Kenji

Re: Power Supplies --- Mac and PC

2005-02-13 Thread David Lesher

I noticed on Kensingtons Web-Site that are ones for PCs with multiple
Power Tips and a different one for Macs, but not both.
I've had great luck with the Juice adapter from IGo. It's an AC/DC adapter
with multiple interchangable tips. Mine came with two tips for various
powerbooks (old and new), as well as tips that will fit various PC notebooks.

Targus makes a competing line as well. The tip is machine-specific; it
has a resister that sets the output voltage, as well as the correct
size/shape connector.

Both make units that are both AC and auto/aircraft DC in; worthwhile for a
road warrior.

The expense is not going to be that high, since Apple can mass produce.
As I said before, I'd pay extra just to have a BTO for the features I
need. What would be nice is dual expansion bays and ports on the back.
Not asking for too much, is it? With today's technology, third party
companies would have a field day with expansion bays being available on
new PowerBooks. For the most part, in my opinion, a BTO means build
to order. What is actually happening though, is not BTO. It's like
buying a car with or without a stereo. Nothing is changed, just simply
added or subtracted. If I want a BTO, then I want a BTO. . .know what
I mean?
