Re: How do you create a guest account?

2005-04-27 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Pacer,
Thanks for the advice below, but it didn't work. I've given up calling
it Guest and decided to name it Visitor, making the password
guest. This worked fine. As far as limiting use, the only thing I'm
concerned about others seeing is my home folder, which is inaccessible
when logged into a different account. So for now, I've accomplished
what I wanted to do; just with a different name. Thank you for taking
the time to help,

Zoltan
P.S. I tried creating it without a password, and Mac OS X allowed
this; but not without several warnings. To do this, simply leave the
password fields empty. Expect the usual security warnings, but it
should work. When it comes time to log in, simply click on the
Visitor or Guest name at the login window and it'll automatically
log in without a prompt for a password.

Zoltan,
I had the same issue you describe here and tried the solutions or
queries suggested in this thread but to no avail.

I then tried to create a Guest account.
I made the name Guest (case-sensitive).
I made the simple name Guest (case-sensitive).
I then made the password guest (case-sensitive).
This worked for me, it might work for you.
Keep in mind that you need to supply a password or the system will
supply one for you.
I used the password as the password hint to simplify the guest sign-on.

Also, you will still need to modify and restrict the permissions.
I only set it up to use a few games (Chess, Marble Blast) plus
FireFox, AppleWorks and TextEdit.

Hope this helps. Let me know if it does. I only have one system
right now to test on.

Cheers,
Pacer
P.S. I quoted the whole letter because I address the whole letter.

something? Any info would be appreciated. I tried the Mac Help app.
but as usual it did nothing for me. I'm running Panther version

Wallstreets on the way in various states of needing to be worked on.

Besides, I am in-debt and going off to law school soon, so she is
lucky I'm fiscally irresponsible enough to rationalize spending what I
have spent on putting together a machine for her. (G)
Oh ya she will get that one ;;
Thanks for hte tip on Virtual PC 5. I will definitely have to keep an
eye out for it. Too bad it is not out in retail -- I have about 4
Windows 98 SE CDs and licenses that are currently unused I could put
on it, not to mention the 5 Windows 95 licenses and CDs and the two
DOS 5 licenses. I could buy the cheap-o no-OS version of Virtual PC.
Also do a post on Low End Swap for VPC, prices tend to be a little
cheaper and the possibility of a Mac VPC user may be a tad higher and
they may have some speed tips. I shall have some one dig through my
piles of boxes and see if my kids left all the parts of VPC 5 from when
they needed it in H.S. for 1 semester online class.

Any idea how well Virtual PC 7 might run on a Wallstreet 300mhz with
512MB? H
VPC 5 was barely tolerable on a Pismo and they needed W 98, I am sure
someone has work arounds or some ideas to speed things up, but out of
the box to a neophyte it was slow.
Good luck

Re: Wallstreet charge probs

2005-04-27 Thread Gene Osburn
My new-to-me Series II Wallstreet 266 definitely has battery issues -
won't charge a new battery in either bay. Got it to see the battery in
both bays, briefly with lightning charge indicator, then nada...back to
red X through the icon on restart, etc. PMU reset ineffective.

I'm thinking probably needs new PMU, but that's just a guess. Anybody
here had (and fixed) similar problems with their G3 'Book?
You need to be sure that those batteries will charge in another known good
machine, then fault find yours.
--
I'm reasonably sure that a *brand new* battery should charge in its
intended PowerBook without any major glitches in the process. If it
doesn't, that would indicate to me a problem with the 'Book and not the
battery. Also, I just recently learned that the previous owner quit
using the WS about a year ago when her batteries (two) more or less died
on her. Two batteries going belly up in short order...? Sounds like a
charging problem to me. The more I Google and read up on the subject
the more I begin to suspect a faulty Power Charge Inverter. Can anyone
tell me if they think I'm homing in on the problem and its probable fix?

TIA

Missed that.

I have had 3rd party batteries that were bad on arrival and never charged,
an external charger is useful for that.

Not sure which board you are talking about here.

I'd strip the machine, check that all the boards are correctly seated - the
Charge Board can become detached from the Power Board.

Check also that the EMI shielding near the DC socket isn't shorting to the
metal plug.

Beyond that, you really need a good machine to test with, other wise you are
buying parts at random - there are 5 or 6 boards that could be at fault
here.

I've several times found a bad Sound Board can stop batteries charging,
after that I'd suspect the Charge, PMU, Power in that order, but that's just
my experiences.

If it's a question between VPC 7 from Microsoft and the prior version
from Connectix (was that 6?), I'd choose the Connectix version. Though
VPC 5 will most likely be faster with your hardware and Windows 98 SE and
Mac OS 9. VPC 6 with Windows 98 SE is supposed to be faster under OS X
though and that is also my experience. But stay at win 98SE.

I really dislike the Microsoft version that for some reason repeatedly
wrecks my windows install every week or so. This the Connectix didn't.

When I installed my HD in my G4 400 PB, I also
reopened the case when it wasn't recognized.

Then I found a disk utility on the 10.3.8 install DVD
which formatted(?) the HD.

Then it was recognized and I was able to reinstall the

Tried that ...
the HD doesn't even show on the ATA bus ...
so I can't use the disk utility to re-initialize the HD (which was
originally done using the disk utility from the Mini) because I can't
select anything, there is nothing showing !

Last resort tonight, I will try to install 10.3 by putting the drive in
a Firewire case and connecting it to a friend's iBook ... we'll see if
that can do it

Not an easy feat ! never have I got so much trouble from a Mac ! and
I owned a few !

Oh well ...
Keep you posted !

wired router but as the trial will let me keep the wireless one, I
  can feel

Anyone any experience of the said router? Recommendations for cards?

Man that article went over the line...this has absolutely NOTHING to do
with the trade secret cases whatsoever, nor if it's repression is it
very effective.

Apple stores are computer stores...I'd wager that within a quarter mile
of nearly every Apple store in existence is a Barnes and Noble, Borders
or other bookstore. In most cases, I'll bet there's one within a few
hundred feet in the same mall.

If Apple didn't pursue the trade secrets cases, then they could easily
be hit with absolutely justified stockholder lawsuits; lawsuits that
Apple wold lose hands down. That's something that's lost in all the
hoopla over the Think Secret case, is that Apple really had NO CHOICE,
legally, in the matter.

If they didn't do something about it, then the corporate officers are
NOT exercising due diligence, and that can really bleep up your day
with shareholders, board members and possibly even the SEC.

And guess what...it's *APPLE'S* stores...they have every right to do
this.

Severing ties with John Wiley Sons is a little drastic, but
considering the damage to Apple that a biography that implies something
underhanded about the CEO running the company could do, it's well
within their rights to do this. (Puleeze iCON??? What word will
*everyone* see right off the bat...it ain't gonna have anything to do
with a 32 x 32 pixel grid, I'll tell you that!)

This isn't (or at least it ALL isn't) just about Job's ego...Apple is
at a tipping point again as a company. They're poised to make inroads
again into the dominant market forces in the computing industry, bad
news, real or imagined could affect that.

I mean, look at what Doonesbury did to the Newton. The technical and
pricing problems lay at Apple's feet, but weeks and weeks of Doonesbury
jokes essentially torpedoed the Newton from the very beginning. People
still see a Newton and the first thing out of their mouths is often
Oh, like in Doonesbury! That thing never worked, did it?

(note, Apple could OWN the PDA market if they'd countered Palm with a
smaller, cheaper Newton. The OS on the Newt is *still* groundbreaking.
Nothing has ever been made to approach it in usability, flexibility and
sheer seamless elegance.)

If you published a hit piece on Sam Walton, do not expect Wal-Mart to
carry your book. If you're a publisher (or manufacturer) and you don't
shout How High Master? when Wal-Mart says jump, your products don't
get into Wal-marts anymore. For many manufacturers that is the kiss of
death.

Re: replace hard drive in Wallstreet

2005-04-27 Thread Jeff
Ed:
Got to:
http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/
It will show you everything in detail !
HD to buy depends on what you want to do ! and what you have presently
! If you have a 6G now, then 20G or 30G will seem huge !

the new and bigger HD are 7200rpm, fun to use with video editing and
overall speed of the system ... but on a Wallstreet ?
My advice: go for the biggest drive you can afford and feel is enough
in the 5400rpm range ... should be more then plenty for this PB.

Re: Wallstreet charge problems

2005-04-27 Thread Kenneth Vann

I'm reasonably sure that a *brand new* battery should charge in its
intended PowerBook without any major glitches in the process.

Your new batteries could be bad. Mine were.

I went through two brand new batteries that would not charge. From two
different vendors.

On my Wallstreet, I have had 3 APC batteries, and 2 from PowerGears.com.
All since January of this year.

I am now waiting for a RMA from PowerGears to replace it with a third.

I have not found any supplier with a battery the same quality as the ones
Apple made. And as far as I can tell, Apple does not sell batteries for
this computer, unless you are in California. Then they have to sell you one
per state law. I am hoping that the batteries from APC are better quality
than most replacements. So far, this third one is working great.

I have been told, (but not tried one), that the Newer Tech line of
batteries are of good quality.

The best way I have found to test the battery is to use a second
Wallstreet, and if one is not available, to use a VST battery charger. The
charger does a self test on the battery, and if their is a problem it
flashes its red light.

I wish VST had released information on what and how it test, but they have
not, so all you can go by is the flashing red light. My expierence is that
this charger has been a good way to tell if batteries were good or bad.

Apple had a utility called battery reset, which you could use under OS8.6 -
9.x, but it has been my expierence that this utility may not work on all
third party batteries.

The advice others have given about trying the battery before replacing
parts in your Wallstreet is correct. If all else fails, purchase a Apple
brand battery used off ebay to compare all other to.

Replace hard drive in Wallstreet

2005-04-27 Thread Scott Birdwell
Ed Zelinsky asked:
This will be a first for me. Any thoughts on the best hard drive to
buy, a reference manual/website for actually doing the work and the

Ed,
Be aware that our magnanimous sponsor, Low End Mac, warns,
According to the Road Warrior and Other World Computing, the drive
controller in G3 PowerBooks is incompatible with ATA-6 hard drives.
When replacing the internal hard drive, you should be sure to obtain an
ATA-5 complaint drive, which supports transfer speeds of up to 100
MB/sec. As for a reference manual, your best bet is to go to:
http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/?p=Wallstreet*00 and check out the Fix It
Guide. I've used it a lot. Even better it's free! As to the level of
difficulty, it is relatively easy IMHO. Hope this helps.

Will this HD work on a Wallstreet?

2005-04-27 Thread Pacer
Fellow PowerBook-philes,

I was wondering if y'all thought this hard drive would work on a
PowerBook Wallstreet -- or if anyone had any experiences with this
particular drive.

It is ATA 5, not ATA 6. It seems to have decent power and sound
profiles. It seems to fit into the case. It seems to be that this will
work.

But what something seems does not mean that something truly is.

Ugh. Verbs.

So what do you think? Another gentleman was wondering about
hard-drives, and I am planning on using this one. Any comments or fears?

Sincerely,
Pacer

**NEW** 14 1.33Ghz G4 iBook for Sale

2005-04-27 Thread Simon Tang
Hi all,

I have a brand new iBook for sale. New as in direct factory unit from
Apple, just shipped to me from Taiwan, package unopened, and the
AppleCare warranty will start the day you get your machine.

The reason that I'm selling:
This is a replacement unit for an iBook G4 933 which has gone under
the knife 3 times. In the upcoming semester, my courses will require
a PC laptop, so I have to sell this unit in order to accomodate the
course software requirements.

The basic specs:
1.33GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @ 1.33GHz
14-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
512MB DDR266 SDRAM == Upgraded from factory
60GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory
AirPort Extreme built-in
NOT REFURBISHED -- COMPLETELY NEW UNIT

This same unit w/ 256M RAM is offered through Amazon at $1299 shipped
w/ a $100 rebate, and $1199 + tax ($72 - 110 depending on where you
live) through Apple Education. Or $1299 + tax for those who like to
shop retail.

Cost
I will let this unit w/ the 512M RAM go for $1200 shipped w/ full
insurance via UPS 3-Day Select.

Payment/Transaction details
Due to recent mishaps with Paypal, I will no longer be able to accept
paypal payments. Thus only good ol' fashion check or money order will
be accepted.

Since this is a fairly large transaction, I will be open to shipping
to an impartial third party to act as an escrow, and I will be willing
to split up to half of the associated shipping fees.

Local pickup would obviously be best. This unit is located in Troy,
NY (upstate near Albany, NY). I will give a shipping discount for
local pickups ($1150).

Misc
This unit is completely new, with the labels still intact, and I have
not opened it as such. If you would like me to open to inspect, I can,
but only for serious buyers since the warranty will start the day it
is opened -- and if this sits here for a week, then the buyer will
lose a week of warranty. Obviously, any problems will go through
Apple, and I will be happy to assist w/ the process in whatever way I
can.

Tiger
This unit qualifies for a Tiger upgrade. I have ordered the disks (so
you don't have to), and I will ship you the new version of OS X once I
receive it in a few days for no additional cost!!

Please email me directly to minimize spam to the list, thanks.

Simon

Wallstreet Modem Not Recognized

2005-04-27 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello G Books Members. I have some questions.

Last week my Wallstreet II would no longer see the internal modem.
Cannot select the internal modem with the Modem Control Panel. The Apple
System Profile, says no modem installed.

I purchased a replacement modem, and installed it. It still wont work.
I borrowed a Wallstreet II from a friend, and tested both modems in his
laptop. Both work.

Well, now I think the problem is in the Logic Board, or what ever part the
modem plugs into.

Anyone experience this type of problem? If so, how did you fix it?

If it is the Logic Board, is it worth replacing, or should I use a PC Card
modem?

By the way, I am running OS 9.1. The PRAM Battery is dead, so I have to
replace that. But I don't think that would cause the problem, would it?

All info, appreciated.

Wallstreet saga continues

2005-04-27 Thread Gene Osburn
Think I'm making progress nursing my new-to-me Wallstreet 266 back to
health.

Visited this link on Steve K's suggestion:
http://www.macintouch.com/laptopbatt.html, and the results include:
- Booted into Open Firmware and did a reset-nvram return reset-all
return. My new battery is now seen by the 'Book (in the right bay at
least; no joy in the left). I'm leaving the WS plugged in overnight
with the battery installed to see if it charges.
- Also reset the PMU (again), just for good measure.
- I'm still concerned about the left bay - which is for battery only,
not big enough for expansion drives. Can't use two batteries at once,
nor battery and expansion drive at the same time. Anyone else seen this
kind of thing in their 'Book? Is the power board between the bays the
likely culprit here?
- Turning off the menu bar battery charge icon in the Date Time
control panel in OS 9 seems to be helping - I couldn't boot into Open
Firmware with it on. I know that's the oddest sounding fix, but one guy
mentioned in the MacInTouch battery discussion that it resolved a
charging problem with his iBook.

Another issue is 256 MB SO-DIMMs. I bought a two-DIMM set specifically
for Wallstreet from Data Memory Systems, and I can't boot with them
installed. I get either the breaking glass memory warning sound, or
(after zapping PRAM) a crash with System Error - bus error message
just after the OS 9.2 splash screen. Disabling extensions doesn't help,
can't get past that point. Tried starting up with just the lower 256
installed, same results. Reinstalled the two 64's I replaced and we're
back in business.

Any further thoughts about all this, or info about similar experiences
welcome.

Backing up

2005-04-27 Thread Brian
tomorrow I need to turn my iBook in to the Apple store to send in due
to a defective LCD (if anyone remembers, I'm the one who in January did
without his iBook for an entire month because the repair depot was
waiting on a replacement LCD). Needless to say, I am not a happy
camper.
But I digress.
I need to back everything up quick fast and in a hurry. Most of it is
done, but I'd like to back up my safari bookmarks (i use safari solely,
so no need to back up IE or any other browsers), and I don't know how
to back up bookmarks. Could I get some advice please on how to do
this?
Also, if anyone who has done this before has a backup checklist of
things I should back up, I'd be happy to hear it. Advice is welcome,
TIA,
Brian

The University of Wisconsin Stout requires you rent a PC from them even if
you have your own computer at $500 each semester.

You can only rent a Mac iBook if you are a Art's Major and you have not say
so in this at all.

Winona State in minnesota has the same system. People put up with it
too. Dunno why. It's not like it's that hard to allow someone to
connect with their own PC or mac to a large network like that.

Re: **NEW** 14 1.33Ghz G4 iBook for Sale

2005-04-27 Thread Andrew
Sounds like a great reason to find another school. My law school recommends
a Dell laptop, but visit any lecture hall and you will see just about
everything on the market, including a few iBooks and PowerBooks. My last
semester (Spring 04) I sat next to a guy using an old PowerBook 5300ce
everyday.

I can see an engineering or computer field requiring PC architecture if the
required software is PC only and VPC is too slow, but other than that, its
none of their business and would be a real deal breaker for me.

Re: **Kind of NEW** PC Rental from Secondary Education

2005-04-27 Thread Tom Ethen
My guess is that Stout get these Compac laptops by the truckload for almost
nothing and then rents them for two years to the tune of $2,000, giving the
school about a $1,000 profit.

My daughter got one of these PC's and it was last years model that I could
have purchased outright for $800 or less elsewhere, but even if I did that,
she still had to rent the one from the school.

Re: Kind of NEW** PC Rental from Secondary Education

2005-04-27 Thread Tom Ethen
This isn't a recommendation at Stout, you must rent the computer from them
and the fee is hidden in your book fees which you have to pay as part of
your tuition.

The first year they had this policy, they had the laptop fee out in the open
as a separate charge, but they got so many complaints, that they hide the
fee mow so you just think they really know how to charge for books.

Yes -- so let's find a nice new home for this iBook!

In case anyone is wondering, I am at Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute. There is actually a decent number of Macs on
campus, but I'd primarily need the engineering applications, and VPC
is simply way too slow. I would love to keep the iBook, but I can't
afford two laptops. You can read about the laptop program here if
you'd like:

The Tiger update fee is only $9.95 + tax, shipped free, so the wait is marginal.

I understand that OSX Tiger will be released soon. Does that mean that

Having said all that, should I wait until after Tiger is released to
see if Apple bumps up the specs of the iBook? I'm not in a rush - my
time frame is about 1 month...

Wait the week or so until you can get a Tiger based machine out of the box.
Saves you the hassle and small cash outlay of upgrading. There was a roumer
awhile back about all systems coming with 512MB of RAM once Tiger shipped.
May or may not happen. Since you have a full month, wait.
