Re: Which Mac OS X/Virtual PC version for my Wallstreet?

2005-04-28 Thread Luis Sequeira
Mac OS X Panther runs pretty well on my Wallstreet, with the help of
XPostFacto.
Only two tweaks, well documented in the web, that I had to apply:
1) remove a file with a name like ATIRageProGA.plugin (don't have
my Wallstreet at hand now to confirm) solved some color problems -
the display had a purple cast and dragging windows used to leave
shadows behind; after removing (or, for precaution, moving it
somewhere else) this file, all went well. It is said that an even
better solution would be to replace it with the one present in
10.2.8, but I did not have that.

2) download a kernel extension (iirc) was required to support the
ejection of cardbus cards. Someone had this already available.

After 1) and 2), my Wallstreet has been rock solid as a secondary mac
(my TiBook is my workhorse now). I applied several updates after
that, all coming through fine via Software Update (no need to run
XPostFacto for those).

That said, I imagine *any* virtual pc would be dog slow on this machine...
Luis Sequeira
Fellow PowerBook-philes,
I am in the process of building a cheap laptop for my GF so that she
will have a machine while she studies abroad in Rome, Italy this summer.
Consequently I am putting together a PowerBook Wallstreet from various
parts and machines I've found for cheap. This will either be a 300mhz
G3 or 466mhz G3 with 512 MB RAM and a 40 gb drive.
Wanting to endear my GF to Macintoshes I was looking to put OS X on the
machine. The problem -- I am not sure which OS X should go.
As I understand it, OS X.2.8 is supported without the requirement of any
other programs for loading it (such as XPostFacto) on the Wallstreet.
However, as I also understand it, Mac OS X.3 had a significant spead
increase over X.2 because of code optimization. Further, I understand
X.3 is the best Mac OS X for laptops.
The problem is that OS X.3 is not supported natively on the Wallstreet
and I would need XPostFacto to get it to work.
Further, XPostFacto's website lists problems with the video when
installing OS X.3 on a Wallstreet.
Does anyone have any experience on this matter?
In other words: Which Mac OS X version is the fastest/most stable on
the PowerBook Wallstreet?
Lastly, my girlfriend is a Classics Major and uses a program written for
DOS which helps her study (a sort-of Dictionary like program).
I would like her to be able to access this program while abroad and
therefore was looking to get one of the Virtual PC versions.
As I would like to be running Mac OS X, and as this is only a DOS
program, I am wondering if it would be best to get the lowest Virtual PC
version I can find (4, 5 or 6?) which will run on OS X?
I have unused copies of Windows 98 and of Dos 5 6, but which Virtual
PC would have a decent ease of use and decent speed for a Mac OS X
computer like the Wallstreet?
Would Virtual PC 4 or 5 work? What about Virtual PC 6?
Any comments or ideas on this?
Sincerely,
Pacer

This isn't a recommendation at Stout, you must rent the computer from them
and the fee is hidden in your book fees which you have to pay as part of
your tuition.

The first year they had this policy, they had the laptop fee out in the open
as a separate charge, but they got so many complaints, that they hide the
fee mow so you just think they really know how to charge for books.

The Wallstreet Sonnet Processor Upgrades....

2005-04-28 Thread Pacer
My fellow PowerBook-philes,

In a fit of unbridled upgrade-frenzy I am contemplating going all out on
the two Wallstreets I picked up on E-Bay recently. One alreayd has a
466 mhz G3 processor upgrade (maybe a Newer Tech version?) and the other
is a 300 mhz G3.

The question is:

Should I upgrade the second book to a 500mhz using Sonnet? (G3 upgrade
only US$199)
How much better would the G4 upgrade be?

My reason for asking is sheer curiousity. That and by spending the time
writing this I am not looking at the Sonnet website nor on E-Bay and
willfully spending money on Mac products I do not need.

The one thing I wonder: Would Tiger even run on a G3 Wallstreet? Would
it work better on a G4? Would any of this make a significant speed
difference?

From what I read, the real limitations can be found in the video processor.

I have an iBook G4 1.2ghz with 768 RAM and Mac OS X and various programs
run quite well.

How would a G4 500mhz Wallstreet compare?

Oh the curiousity.

If I were a cat, I might be dead ... or stuck in some hole, in a tree,
or on a roof mewing.

Sincerely,
Pacer the Loon

Re: Wallstreet charge probs

2005-04-28 Thread JeanBee

My new-to-me Series II Wallstreet 266 definitely has battery issues -
won't charge a new battery in either bay.  Got it to see the battery in
both bays, briefly with lightning charge indicator, then nada...back to
red X through the icon on restart, etc.  PMU reset ineffective.

I'm thinking probably needs new PMU, but that's just a guess.  Anybody
here had (and fixed) similar problems with their G3 'Book?

I agree that it's a crap shoot diagnosing the problem without testing the
batteries in another machine or external charger.  That said, I took a shot in
the dark with a Wallstreet and replaced the Power and Charge Card when
batteries stopped charging or being recognized.  In my case, the problem was
fixed.  It's quite a trip, disassembling the machine to get to the card.  On
another Wallstreet, I was able to fix the problem by simply reseating the old
Power and Charge Card (it was a VERY loose connection, I wonder if that's
common?) ... you may wish to try the suggestion of reseating all possible
offending components before buying parts.
Good Luck !

Re: The Wallstreet Sonnet Processor Upgrades....

2005-04-28 Thread Pacer
My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

As an aside, I am looking at games for the GF to have as well.

Currently she plays Age of Mythology and American McGee's Alice.

Both of these have Mac versions -- the problem is both seem to have
video requirements higher than what the Wallstreet can provide.

Alice seems out, requiring hardware video acceleration to the tune of
128 MBs of Video RAM.

Age of Mythology seems less adamant on requirements but it is still
16 MBs, and if I am not wrong the Wallstreet only carries 4MBs? (Which
is mind-boggling to me, my 1998 PC from Dell came with at least 16 MBs
on its video card standard wow, reminds me of 1994.)

My aside:

In other Wallstreet user's experiences, how well do some of the newer
video-intensive games work on a Wallstreet?

Do y'all think a G4 500MHz upgrade would work better? Or even show a
difference?

Now I am wondering if even some of the Myst games might work

Sincerely,
Pacer the Despondent

I had this exact problem after the update to 10.3.2. I turned off IPv6 in

this is related, but there you go.
I think I'm jumping into this thread midstream.

Previous questions prompted suggestions that the modem card may have

I have yet to open and check.

blue pismo screen

2005-04-28 Thread Tim Hodgson
Hi all,

My pismo has lately developed a worrying habit of waking up with a
blueish tinted screen. It's not an all-over cast, it's more that it seems
to be picking up the subtle horizontal grey stripes in the menu bar and
title bars, and colouring them blue, in a streaky kind of way! (I would
post a screengrab, but of course the effect isn't actually preserved in a
grab.)

After a few minutes the cast disappears quite suddenly.

Is this screen on the way out? I fear I already know the answer...

You don't need to install 10.2 first. In fact, when I went from 10.2 to
10.3, I did backup key files in my home directory and just formatted my OS X
partition before installing 10.3. It just ensures that no garbage will be
left over.

As for Xpost Facto (that's what I think you mean), I don't know about it so
I can't comment on its installation.

Car Power Adapter

2005-04-28 Thread Clark Martin
I finally decided to get a car power adapter for my 6mo old iBook G4.
I had been using an AC inverter and the usual power supply but
decided for a number of reasons to get the car adapter. For my
WallStreet I had bought one from MCE so a couple of months ago I
checked there for an adapter for the iBook. The website showed it as
sold out at the time. Yesterday I checked again and it was still
sold out. I called them and they said they did have some in. I
ordered one online. I got home this afternoon and there it was.

So anyway the point is if you are looking one at MCE they do have
them. Oh and one of the reasons for going to MCE is they cost $30
there. That's $10 less than a couple of catalog houses that were
selling it for.

My previous laptops had the conventional power connector with no
light in it. My ibook's AC adapter has the orange / green LED in it
to show charge status. Funny it seems wrong now that this car
adapter doesn't have the LED in the connector. I've gotten use to
using the light to confirm that everything is plugged in correctly.

I'm using the adapter right now, getting power from my flashlight
(it's a big flashlight).

If you install the Airport software with the card installed,
then run the Airport Setup you should end up with a dropdown
in the TCP/IP control panel with Airport as an option.

Select that. If you are in range of a valid Airport signal you
should see the name of the router in the Control Strip Airport
tab.

By having both, no telling what kind of conflicts might be induced.

Do you have Control Strip? If so, does it have an Airport tab (little
orange
thingy with 5 dots after it)?

Is there an Airport dropdown in the TCP/IP control panel?

Re: Installing 10.3 on a WS

2005-04-28 Thread themacuser
XPostFacto is what you mean and you will need to do that from Mac OS 9.
Then you use it to boot the 10.3 installation disk.

You don't need to install 10.2 first. In fact, when I went from 10.2 to
10.3, I did backup key files in my home directory and just formatted
my OS X
partition before installing 10.3. It just ensures that no garbage

As for Xpost Facto (that's what I think you mean), I don't know about
it so
I can't comment on its installation.

Re: The Wallstreet Sonnet Processor Upgrades....

2005-04-28 Thread Gary Goldberg
I bought a G4/500 upgrade for my G3/250 WS almost
2 years ago. The only speed increase I've noticed is
when scanning or converting a CD to an MP3, i.e.
CPU-intensive apps.

The lack of a graphics chip upgrade path for a WS
is the biggest drawback to a speed increase, IMHO

K

Hmmm. Are you running OS 9.x? If so, in your control panels
folder you should have a TCP/IP control panel. Near the top
of the control panel pane, there is a button labeled
Connect Via. Clicking on it should give you a bunch of
choices, one of which is Airport.

Once you have chosen the Lynksys in the Airport, one or more
of the dots should turn green indicating signal strength.
