New PB G4: questions
hi folks, a friend just bought a new shiny 15 G4 and we have a couple of questions to get started: - filling in the registration at startup and sending to Apple is enough to have the PB registred (with serial Nr., etc) to her name for all purposes? Or is something else needed? - I think I vaguely remember somebody mentioning additional services for registering the Serial Nr. There's such a thing? If yes, does it make sense? (we are in the UK) - Battery: there was some advice for getting started on the right foot with the battery. Was it charging up for some time, or discharging it to the bone, baking, freezing, I can't recall. I remember the practice of discharging it totally about once a month and the discharge to 40% + cool it to maintain whwn not used for long times. Re: my pb dongs! but nothing else
I've actually had an external monitor hooked up this whole time for that very reason. It ended up simulcasting on both. I got it to work! But it won't work with the keyboard. If I hook one of the three up it won't power on, without the keyboard hooked up it works fine. This is driving the 14 LCD at 1024x768, haven't checked the VRAM tho. I'm gonna try different top plastics and see if that fixes it. Got to tear it down again though. Mike K Hmmmwith the keyboard in, can you do a power manager reset (from either keyboard ?). Adapter for cig lighter
Any recommendations on an adapter to use my iBook in the car? I see that Linksys has one that will actually allow you to plug a 2 or 3-prong plug into it, while others (APC was one that I saw) just allows you to plug the ibook into the lighter. What I got from reading the manual and apple and other online stuff re: new powerbook batteries was this: Charge it up, then one deep discharge, to the point of laptop shutdown, to calibrate the time remaining feature of the power manager. Then don't deep discharge it again if you can help it, you'll lose some capacity each time you do that. Although you may have to do it again sometime in the future if the time remaining estimate gets messed up somehow. From reading of lithium battery tech in general, they really like to be kept topped up all the time, unlike other battery types you won't hurt them by having them plugged in always, you should actually get better a lifespan out of them that way. For long term storage, cooler, dry place (not a frig) at 40% charge is best. Like a basement cupboard maybe. They lose capacity whether in use or not so for lithium ion batteries, a couple laptop battery places said that it doesn't make sense usually to buy a spare unless you're really going to use it actively and get the most out of it while it is freshest. On my 1.5 month old 12 PB, I get 3.5 to 4 hrs work time on it, depending on what I'm doing. Lots more system uptime really since usually ends up asleep for a while until I come back to it. I still can't believe that I can burn a couple CDs, DVDs, etc while on battery and still have plenty of juice left to do other work. Nice! HTH. From what I've read (see below) the pink/red color is mostly likely the bulb growing old; of course replacing the whole display with one with a good bulb would fix it. I've owned my Pismo since new and I think I've spent at least 1500 in additional repairs and upgrades to it. By far compared with my 17 powerbook thePismo is still a great computer. Indeed, I'm very fond of mine, but am thinking seriously of moving up to a 17 G4, for added display space and power. I haven't tried 10.4 yet, but although a recent upgrade to 550MHz G4 considerably enhanced the Pismo's ability to work with OS X, it's still frustratingly slow at times. I'll certainly miss the Pismo's ergonomics, especially the one-hand trackpad; the G4 PBs' design is very snazzy looking, but less usable, requiring two hands for the trackpad, which is annoying. If all that worked, I could get a Western Digital External USB 2.0 hard drive which is also on promotion. It should work with your TiBook, but I'd suggest using a Firewire drive instead. It's a faster sustained speed than USB 2 and you already have the Firewire capability in your 'book now. - Dylan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... issues with connecting directly via an ethernet cord on my laptop
Whoa is me! Long time mac user, first time powerbook user ... I recently purchased a shiny new 17 G4 powerbook. It's fun and fast and I love it ... except, I am clueless when it comes to networking stuff. I'm a designer, not a network admin :( I first got the laptop, opened it, started it up, and it immediately recognized my wireless Verizon DSL and connected to the internet asap. I was thrilled. Well, I told the peeps at work, that I wanted to be able to connect to the network and they told me I had to setup a VPN (Virtual Private Network). They gave me the info, showed me where to fill it in on my mac, and told me to take it home and test it out. I did, and nothing. It doesnt recognize it at all. When I am at work, and they can essentially pretend like it's not on our network (not sure how they do this) and poof, it works. I get home, and I get the error that the Connection was terminated by the communication device. So, my network admin told me to take the computer home, and plug the ethernet cable directly into the powerbook and try. I went home, turned off my modem, pulled the ethernet cable from my router, and put it in my computer, started the modem back up, and my Network preferences on my Mac say that the ethernet cable is connected and so is the Internet. BUT - it isnt. I cant access the web in any browser, cant connect to AIM, etc. So I call Apple... First, apple tells me to go into my Network Preferences and enable PPPoE. I told him I didnt need this when I originally setup the computer (in fact, it's never been enabled), and he told me that was impossible. After a 5 minute lecture on why this isnt possible (as I sit browsing the internet with only TCIP enabled), he then tells me to do the same thing my IT guy at work said to do, and of course, it doesnt work. The tech then asks if I've purchased AppleCare. I told him I did, and I've been waiting for a month now for the information to come in the mail. The Apple tech says that it must be a problem with my DSL. I said we had other laptops previously, and had no problems with them, and we have two desktops connected to the router with no problem? He says he cant help me unless I have my login stuff for the PPPoE connection - which of course, I dont. I'm not even sure what he's talking about. THEN. I unplug the ethernet, and Airport picks back up and my Internet Explorer is no longer working. Safari picks up the connection, but not IE. He tells me that IE is a dangerous program, and that Microsoft isnt even supporting it anymore and that nobody is using it anymore. I laughed out loud. That was it. Any guidance here? Anyone else have any issues with connecting over a home network via Airport (TCIP) but not being able to connect directly through an ethernet connection? Just for the record - I have a Verizon DSL. We have two desktops (a mac and pc) hooked up to a router that have no problems, and my husband had a PC laptop for years that had a wireless card that worked fine. Sorry if I'm ranting, but I'm just at a loss. The Apple tech basically said that it might be a hardware issue, or it might be my DSL / router. That was about as much help as I got out of him. I appreciate anyone's guidance. Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Adapter for cig lighter
Any recommendations on an adapter to use my iBook in the car? I see that Linksys has one that will actually allow you to plug a 2 or 3-prong plug into it, while others (APC was one that I saw) just allows you to plug the ibook into the lighter. The APC one is $40 while the others were $80. TIA, Diane I use a 100 watt inverter. It works both for charging my cell phone and using my ibook. I bought mine at Office Max. Make sure that the inverter wattage is large enough for your computer. Regards, Don -- God Bless America!!! United We Stand!!! Support our Troops! . Retired HS. USB/firewire combo external drives are kinda spendy most places, but OWC has some for pretty decent prices. I have had one for quite a while and it's been good. I just got a second for my wife's desktop, for backup purposes. HTH. B -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
