Re: Audio disc backups

2005-08-17 Thread Francesco sciacca
Roxio's Toast does it for me.

cheers,
gianfranco

I just got a new audio CD ( the new Cook, Dixon Young Volume 1 disc
:) ), and like I do with all my music, I want to make a backup of it.
(I'd rather destroy the backup in my car and elsewhere than the
 expensive original!)

What software do you all use for a full-disc copy? I'd prefer one
that would reproduce the tracks as is--some have pauses between the
tracks, some don't. I tried discBlaze, but it doesn't have a
full-disc copy function, and wants a default between the tracks.
Like I said, I really don't want anything fancy, just something to let
me do full-disk copies. Any suggestions? (I've got a PB G4 aluminum
 with Tiger)

 Thanks!

How do I change the preference I set when I 1st configured the PB, to

It's in the preferences in the Safari application itself.

I think with the duplicate names, on the multiple CD's...you might to have
to add a letter at the end of each file...A,B...etc before you combine
them, whether you can do this with a whoosh of a computer command or the ole

powerbook help- Tri-cities/ Walla Walla, WA area

2005-08-17 Thread Brian McEwen

Hi all;

If someone here is in the WA State, Walla Walla or Tri-cities region and
would be willing to help someone with rebuilding a recalcitrant TiBook, and
getting a Windows box talking to an Airport base station, please let me
know off-list. The 'book is in Walla Walla.

The PB has been failing to boot, some sort of reinstall was just done,
hopefully archive and reinstall but I'm not sure what options were really
chosen. Anyway Safari won't now open a new windows, etc, although it can
get online and ssh works, etc. I don't know what the heck was done to it,
really.

I've been trying to troubleshoot over the phone and it's not going well;

Thanks for any assistance; it should be trivial to fix if you were actually
hands-on.

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-17 Thread Dan K
I think flogging off surplus equipment like this is a terrific idea. If
they had auctioned off the lot in bulk, they wouldn't have gotten much
more than $50 each anyhow. Better the iBooks stay in the community that
originally paid for them. That way the community gets the benefit rather
than (usually) a for-profit recycling/refurbing company. Not that I'm
against for-profits making a buck, but we _are_ talking about public
funds here. (Yeah, I know - some of these iBooks will turn up on eBay and
elsewhere - still, I'm sure most will stay with, and be used by, county
residents.)

Henrico County's implimentation of the sale wasn't the best though. There
are plenty of ways to control this sort of thing, too bad they didn't
forsee how many buyers would show up.

Shame the replacements are Dell . . . hee hee - wanna bet there'll be no
similar riot when Henrico County goes to flog off that lot in a couple of
years? That's if enough survive to even bother!

Re: best photo organizer

2005-08-17 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
By way of reminder, I'm the one trying to save photos from iPhoto to
CD, but iPhoto keeps filing them for me in folders that are numbered
by year, then within the years by month, and then within the months
by day.
As a result, these photos
often have duplicate numbering systems. So when I try to save them
all at once, I am told that a photo already exists with that name,
and do I want to replace it? I tried that once, and ended up with
around 600 photos, so that means that about 500 of them are somehow
duplicates.

My PC son says there's an automatic way to renumber into a
consecutive series a group of photos, files, whatever, that are
grouped into one folder. If I could do that, then I could burn all
of these photos without using iPhoto to do it.

Claire
Graphic Converter www.lemkesoft.de will do batch renaming, batch
conversion to a different format and a bunch of other things.
You open a window, select the files you want renamed, fill in how you
want renamed, you can add to the original name or make up a new one.

It's shareware but the trial version is fully usable.
You just have a nag screen for 30 seconds when you start up.
I've actually paid (about $35) for a couple of copies for various family
members.

A small clip from the BBC article about the riot:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4159678.stm

It's rather strange that we would have such a tremendous response for
the purchase of a laptop computer, and laptop computers that probably
have less-than- desirable attributes, said Paul Proto, director of
general services for Henrico County commenting on the sale of the
four-year-old machines.

County officials said they would review events and see what could be
done differently for future sales.

Unofficial estimates said more than 12,000 people attended the sale.

Excuse me? less-than-desirable attributes? Well, now we know why
they're going to Dells--another IBM-centric idiot who doesn't know
what they had. :)

planned obsolescence in this country.

Its not that American cars are junk it's that a lot of people don't know how
to take care of them. Change the oil and perform regular maintenance and
200k + miles is not a problem. I've had several American cars last this

Re: best photo organizer

2005-08-17 Thread Claire Hart

I've not done this, and there may be an easier way, but:
I'd make a new iPhoto library of the basketball pictures. Take all
your original CDs (hope you have them).

Copy them one by one to individual, nicely named, folders on your
hard drive (bball-JDoe-to-May312005.

For each folder, run an app like FileWrangler or QuickName (see
macupdate.com, I use FileWrangler if I need to batch rename, but I'm
not sure it's the best one) to rename the files, adding a -1 or a -2
or a -3 to the files in the different directories (to make their
names all unique). Use -1 only for one dir, -2 for the next, etc.

Now, you can import to iPhoto, making sure that you set the prefs to
leave the original the heck alone (so your nicely named folders and
files are still intact), and put a copy of the photo in the iPhoto
library. Congrats, you've just doubled your use of file space, but
you can still work with your photos in a sensible manner if you need
to. :)

Now, if you want to select a subset in iPhoto and export it to a
folder, all the names will be unique.

Is there a way to do this within iPhoto already? I think not, since
you're getting the issue of duplicate filenames when you export, one
would HOPE it would have renamed them -1 -2 -3 etc. on export like
when you download the same file from the web with Safari multiple
times, but I guess they didn't program iPhoto like that?

That's at least one way to fix your problem, perhaps not the best
though. For the # of photos you have, it shouldnt be too bad.

Brian,

I have 1100+ photos. I cannot imagine handling 1100 photos one at a
time, renaming each one, running an app on each one, resetting prefs
on each one, etc. Also, I do not have the original CDs, as I've
already returned them to the various families. I created a 29 minute
iMovie last March using nearly half of the photos plus a few QT movie
clips that we showed at the end-of-the-season banquet; now I just
want to burn them all and distribute the CDs to all the families that
want one, possibly 30 families.

Truthfully, Most of the knowledgeable computer people I know like OS
X, and are envious of it when I show it off. They like the
functionality, and wish they could also have a virus free computer,
and simply wish the mac was more standardized compared to PCs so they
could use al the same hardware/software. mostly, though, they are
still stuck on the macs are too expensive idea. Even after I show
them cheap macs like the mac mini or iBook it doesn't fully sink in.
They've been told otherwise for too long.
They also don't quite grasp the idea that macs now use a unix based
OS. Mostly, though, PC users who really know computers simply don't
like apple as a company, or they don't like how elitest mac users
can sometimes appear. We all know how nice these macs we have are,
and why they are preferrable to PCs. But it's best we not brag about
it to those who don't use Macs. It's as offensive to a PC user as
when a president of an all PC college steps forward and says all of
the macs that people stampeded for are worthless and he can't fathom
why people would be so stupid. Instead, just let the mac speak for
itself to catch others attention. You can help it talk, but try not
to say bad things about the windows world, since it implies bad
buying/decision making of the PC user. Catch more flies with honey
than vinegar and all that.

a BW sitting under a table in a computer lab, no one knows how it
works, no one cares, so it jsut sits there taking up space.

Brian

Please don't generalize about a staff of incompetent IT pushing these
kinds of decisions, because at the University I work for, and several
others that I know about, it's not the IT staff who hate Macs, but the
IT MANAGEMENT who decide thou shalt standardize. We've lost several
Mac UNIX labs over the past few years because they weren't getting
enough use, and we'll save money by standardizing the labs. With the
volume deals that our supplier of XP boxes gives us, we actually do save
some money, unless you count the amount of time spent diagnosing
problems or calling for warranty service or putting out of order signs
on the PCs.

A number of the IT staff actually preferred to keep the Mac UNIX labs,
because there are students who otherwise have to go across campus to the
CS department's building in order to use one of their UNIX labs, or go
across campus to the building that houses our College of Liberal Arts,
where we still maintain a couple of Mac labs. Fortunately, the
standardization of the labs does not extend to the faculty and staff,
and we're allowed to choose whatever platform will allow us to get the
job done, whether that's MS-Windows, Mac OS9, Mac OSX, UNIX, LINUX, etc,
though it is preferred that you try to be relatively current in the
version of the OS you're using. The students are welcome to use
whatever platform they wish, with possible exceptions where a particular
class requires they use a software package that is not available on
their platform of choice.

computers and Macs are at best either toys or only something a graphic
artist would use. Matter of fact they've even stolen the phrase PC.
My PowerBook is as much a personal computer than any off-brand POS

You bring up a good point that I completely missed. These are
management decisions, not general IT decisions. I'm sorry, I've just
become biased dealing with the incompetent IT at the school I go to

Problems with situations like these is that management either
surrounds themselves with inadequate accounting staff who do not
properly look into the options available, or they do not listen to
their accounting staff. Good accounting staff would work closely
with IT to find the best alternative monetarily and non monetarily.
Clearly, this is not what happened in Kurt's example.

Re: Portfolio 7 [Was: Best photo organizer]

 snip I bought Portfolio 7.

Now I am in the process of trying to catalog my files and it is a
struggle (anybody on the list who uses it and is willing to help a
newbie --let me know off list). I have found Extensis support to be
almost non existent and when I query their knowledge base I get a
listing of every article in it. I have not found a user's forum so at
this point no help seems to be available.

I have considered selling my copy on eBay and absorbing the loss, but
now have decided to keep working at it. Needless to say, I would not
recommend Portfolio. And advice to others is to start now with
something--don't wait until you have thousands of images.

I have found Portfolio Desktop Edition 5.0.2 (running in Classic under
10.4.2) to be very intuitive and easy to use. I have been recently
planning to upgrade to the latest OS X version but your message has
given me pause.

Could you be more specific about the problems you are having?

Thank you,

David

In your case having already learned the Portfolio system, etc. you
would not likely have the problems I have had. My biggest issue is with
the Extensis mind-set and almost unwillingness to provide assistance.
Example-- I emailed customer service with a question about transferring
ownership of my copy if I decided to sell it. They responded with two
telephone numbers I could call.

I then decided to keep it and see if I couldn't learn to use it since
I needed a solution.

Another example-- I could not get a new catalog set up (I had already
set up several) and I would get an error message--An unexpected error
has occurred--- after several attempts with same result--I decided to
query the knowledge base. When I asked the question about establishing
a new catalog, my response was a listing of over 50 articles that I
could review to maybe find the answer. None of them seemed to deal with
setting a new catalog--which obviously is pretty basic. I finally
figured a way around it and have not had to set up a new catalog since.

The total number of articles in their system is 63 (my last check) and
that covers v. 6. and v.7. Not much effort on their part, in my
opinion. I am not stupid but a new user needs some basic information
and the users manual does not provide it. For example, some suggestions
on the best way to convert 1000s of files into the new system. How
should a numbering system be developed and how can I batch convert with
new keywords when I can't see the image. I finally solved this by using
PE3 file browser to look at my files of images and then go to Port to
add a bunch with similar key words. There may be an easier way within
Port but I have not discovered it. So hopefully, that gives you an
idea--I don't think my problems will bother you--just new users.

FYI Shutterbug magazine has a very good review of v.7
http://www.shutterbug.com/test_reports/0205portfolio/index.html

Another reviewer indicated that Portfolio was more user friendly than
iViewmediaPro which I tried out. ?but I went this way. I will say
that now that I have catalogued over 5000 images, I am more
satisfied--the program can do about anything imaginable--just tough to
learn how.

...yer kidding right? There is a massive dose of sarcasm in there?

Actually, it matches my experience.

With only a few major exceptions
early CRT iMacs - flyback problems and fried modems.
early LCD iMacs - floppy gooseneck and suddenly dead pixels.

Mac hardware is MUCH more durable than PC hardware. Between my
workshop here and a friend's depot (a Mac and PC repair store), we've
got a lot of working Macs. Quite dirty etc, but working. Then we've
got dozens of dead PCs. Fried this or that, etc.

This matches my home / personal experience too. Every Mac I've ever
owned, since the 80s (Plus, II, IIci, 7100/66, 7300/120, BW, PB 180,
PB G3, PB G4, etc) are ALL still working. In the last five years
alone, my housemate has killed three desktop PCs and a laptop. His
4th desktop just went to the shop yesterday for repair. His new
(1yro) laptop has already required repair.

Don't get me wrong... I think overall software-enforced obsolescence
kills off more computers than hardware failures. But it still amazes
me at how fragile PC hardware is... and how willing the lemmings are
to buy it.

Thank you for your explanation, although I must say that if I am any
example, unless 6 and 7 are vastly different from 5, I think most
users would have an easy time learning the program: File/New Catalog
(or Command+N) to open a new catalog; drag photos to catalog window;
FileOpen Catalog (or Command+O) to open and view a catalog;
double-click an image for an enlarged view. I don't think I have
found a reason to use any other functions.

Of course, I understand that my needs may be very different from
yours. In my business (industrial advertising), we receive photos on
CDs or via FTP. The photos are already labeled. Cataloging them in
Portfolio gives us a convenient way to quickly look over the photos
and see what is available for a particular job without opening each
photo.

When you had a problem creating a new catalog, what did the cause
turn out to be? Did it have anything to do with Portfolio itself?

I have purchased a lot of stuff from MacMall that included rebates. I have
never had a problem and have been dealt with fairly. Thought I'd throw that

Scott, all companies screw up every once in a while ;-)

But to be serious...back when I was running a consulting business I
dealt with a number of companies (including PC/Mac Mall) and found
that two companies provided consistently high quality service and
worked hard to fix mistakes even when the mistake wasn't theirs.
MacMall wasn't one of the two. Several companies seemed to want to
provide high quality service but messed up sometimes and took a while
to get it fixed. I'd do business with them if the price they offered
was significantly better than my favorite two could offer. MacMall
wasn't among these companies. Two companies seemed totally clueless
and I sometimes wondered if this apparent cluelessness was
intentional. MacMall was one of these. The complaints that I had
about them in the mid-late 90's continue into today - including them
not honoring their rebates, special prices, and freebies.

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-17 Thread david
This argument has a huge flaw. Once upon a time a Mac was seriously
over engineered but they are not today. A Mac largely uses components
that come right off the shelf the same as PC manufacturers. The only
exception would be the logic board but even there Apple is using far
fewer custom chips today and utilizing off the shelf components there
too. Apple's assembly quality control is probably better which
accounts for Apple's lower dead on arrive rate than other
manufacturers but once you've achieved burn in I don't think the
argument that Apple's are higher quality holds water.

It is completely true that Macs last longer than PCs but I'd argue
that it is largely OS related today and not hardware. In the 90's
while hardware was getting faster and faster and Microsoft released
95, 98, and Millennium, each version of the OS required faster
computers, more memory, higher powered graphics cards, bigger hard
drives. I upgraded my Win3 machine to Win95 but two weeks later
reinstalled Win3 and bought a new computer with Win95. I didn't
upgrade to Win98, I knew better. I bought a new computer. That
computer wasn't too old when Win2k came out so I upgraded and lived
with it for a few months before buying a new computer. I didn't
upgrade to WinXP and I won't upgrade - in face based on the specs I
CANNOT upgrade to WinVista.

But when I bought a new PowerMac 7200 which came with MacOS 7.x every
time I upgraded to the new version of the MacOS I got a faster
computer! Sure, when I upgraded to OS 9 I needed more memory and by
that time I had a much larger hard drive but the fact remains that
from MacOS 7 through MacOS 9 while memory requirements increased the
upgrade didn't create a speed hit - it gave a speed increase. Now the
shift to OS X required that I buy a new computer but from OS 10.1
through 10.3 I got a faster computer and if 10.4 didn't give me
greater speed it didn't slow it down either.

And that is why I think Macs are lasting longer than PCs.

David - who not only posses every Mac he's ever bought (except for
the PowerBook that tried urban surfing) but also still has all but
one Windows PC he's ever bought. (It's just that the older PCs are
now running linux, not windows)

...yer kidding right? There is a massive dose of sarcasm in there?

Actually, it matches my experience.

With only a few major exceptions
early CRT iMacs - flyback problems and fried modems.
early LCD iMacs - floppy gooseneck and suddenly dead pixels.

Mac hardware is MUCH more durable than PC hardware. Between my
workshop here and a friend's depot (a Mac and PC repair store),
we've got a lot of working Macs. Quite dirty etc, but working.
Then we've got dozens of dead PCs. Fried this or that, etc.

This matches my home / personal experience too. Every Mac I've
ever owned, since the 80s (Plus, II, IIci, 7100/66, 7300/120, BW,
PB 180, PB G3, PB G4, etc) are ALL still working. In the last five
years alone, my housemate has killed three desktop PCs and a
laptop. His 4th desktop just went to the shop yesterday for
repair. His new (1yro) laptop has already required repair.

Don't get me wrong... I think overall software-enforced
obsolescence kills off more computers than hardware failures. But
it still amazes me at how fragile PC hardware is... and how willing
the lemmings are to buy it.

- Dan.

Re: Fax/DSL OS9.2

2005-08-17 Thread Jim Dynes
If my memory serves me correctly, OS 9 didn't have fax capability. I
think you need 3rd party software like Faxstf. With that software you
can configure it to access the external modem.

NOTE: Make sure your modem is a fax modem.

In fact I had my DSL blow out last week and Sprint gave me a dial up

Jim,
NOTE: Make sure your modem is a fax modem.

My external modem is the same modem I used to fax from and I still have the
software/address book installed...

How to I reconnect the external modem around the DSL?
My DSL is a Linksys Broadband Router bridged to a Sprint modem thru
ethernet.

If I am thinking, and i do have my moments, do I just plug in the external
modem and not worry about the Open Remote Access box?

Hi Kristina, I am not totally familiar with your specific Mac. In the
old Macs you would plug it into the RS232 port. In the new Macs I
would think USB would do the trick. Try it see if your fax software
recognizes it.

Re: Pismo and dead CD/DVD

We have two Pismo 400 power books that the CD/DVD drives are dead in.
What is the cheapest and effective way to try and get some more use
from them? Once in a while it will recognize a disk.

Is this a common problem with these computers.

Neither one of us have had any luck find a suggestion as to what
would be a simple and good solution.

Model M7931. They have been used very little. Tiger needs a DVD to
install and I assume all the upgrades will be the same.

Thanks

Replace the mechanism.

I'd wager it is a DRN-8080 - they are very unreliable.

Buy another mechanism and slot it in place and you are away.

You can fit any other drive in the module (just about) but the bezel won't
fit unless you match the mechanism.

Is CCC working properly with Tiger?

No. that's why I switched to SuperDuper! recently and I actually like
 it a lot better.

I believe this is incorrect. With the latest upgrade to Tiger, 10.4.2,
CCC now works just fine. It does for me and it didn't with previous
iterations of Tiger.

Are you able to synch (update) an already cloned drive or are you
erasing and cloning from scratch each time?

Don't know the answer to the firs part of that sentence.

Each time I backup, I backup my entire hard drive, erasing the old clone
as I do so. bob

Re: Free Wireless Internet access on the road report

2005-08-17 Thread bobgir2004
 Usually at Best Western. Both
places had free high speed internet connections available. Be advised that
you should carry a ethernet cable with you as not all offered wireless
connections. Each motel that did not offer wireless had a modem and ethernet
cable available in the room for use plus usually one available in the lobby.

On the rare occasions I travel, I take the G3 iBook running 10.3.9, with
AirPort Card, with me.

I have zero problems connecting to Wi-Fi setups.

I have had zero success connecting using the Ethernet cable connection.

I have called the hotels' tech support numbers, but often it's a case of
checking in around 7:00 in the evening, trying to connect using the Ethernet
cable, failing, calling tech support, getting a promise to call back and
they never do call back.

Is there some URL out there where I can find instructions for how to
hook up at hotels/motels using the Ethernet setup?

Many thanks,
bob

Exactly. If they were bargain bin then my friend's shop would have

It's not so much the dying which can happen anywhere, but the WinRot:

http://www.oreillynet.com/lpt/wlg/7565:

Will Vista Clean Up WinRot?
by Preston Gralla
Aug. 9, 2005

[my comments in [ ] -- TjL]

You're not imagining it --- the older your PC gets, and the more you
use it, the slower it gets.

[again we see PC as being used exclusively for Windows]

The phenomenon is called WinRot. It's caused by lots of things:
programs with sloppy uninstall routines that litter your hard drive
with their leavings; conflicts between several different versions of
the same DLL; Registry gunk; invisible startup programs; and more.

[All of which are not a problem in OS X]

Microsoft claims that it's got the problem on its radar, and that
Vista will stop the rot.

[rght... raise your hand if you buy it...]

Vista will include a control panel applet that monitors system
performance, and that will suggest what startup programs may be
causing problems. Microsoft also says it's cleaning up the plumbing
to fix the DLL conflict problem. And it's adding new features such as
automatic disk defragmentation that it says will help as well.

[they are focusing on cleaning up the problem after it happens,
rather than preventing it]

I'm only partially convinced. Some of the rot-stopping features, such
as SuperFetch are essentially juiced-up versions of existing
features, and don't seem as if they'll necessarily do much good. For
example, even if you regularly defrag your system, it still slows
down over time, and so automatic defragging won't solve the problem.

[exactly]

Still, it's heartening to know that Microsoft recognizes WinRot, and
will at least partly solve it. On the other hand, the less WinRot
there is, the less excuse there is to buy a new PC every year or two.

[it's taken this long for MS to recognize WinRot?]

That's what I used to do with CCC (the Synch feature was disabled for
some reason). And that's why I also switched to SuperDuper! I find it
so much faster using Smart Update, since it only has to copy over
changed files. Even with a fairly full 80GB drive, we're talking
about 20 minutes (including repairing permissions first) vs. several
hours.
