Re: Real computers

2005-12-07 Thread Aaron Willems
David,

Thanks for your story. I talk to other IT people at the bus stop in the
morning on the way to work. I get some of the same looks. I actually got one
of them to admit that they knew Apple was better, but that Microsoft equaled
Job Security. They were grateful that Microsoft was full of Bugs, Viruses,
and Spyware, because it kept them employed.

Too Funny.

Re: external monitor on iBook

2005-06-20 Thread Aaron Willems
You can hook up an external Monitor to an iBook, but it will only mirror the
display from the iBook. So if the top resolution of the iBook is 1024 x 758
that's what the external monitor will be. Since the iBook can only mirror
the external display, both the iBook and external monitor will show the same
thing.

If you want your external monitor to support higher resolutions, and be
treated as separate device, you need to get a PowerBook.

Hope that makes since.

Hi. I finally got my best friend to switch and she wants to buy an
iBook but she wants to be able to occasionally use it on an external
monitor. She is completely not tech-savvy and when she went to the
local Apple store and told the Apple Genius this he didn't listen
and went into great gobs of detail, so much so that I couldn't make
any sense of it when she got back. So I thought I'd turn to you all
 for help.

Can anyone tell me a quick and reliable place to go for which models
can run external monitors with which cables, etc.? I would really
appreciate it because this information will make or break the deal
for her to buy the iBook.

 Thanks in advance,
 Nancy

Re: Tiger without Appletalk issues

2005-06-17 Thread Aaron Willems
Have you tried this. From Macintouch

Tiger refuses to work with some older Macs sharing files, saying This file
server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect
to it. You can check Enable File Sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP
in the File Sharing control panel of Mac OS 9. See KB 106461.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461#sec4

A solution for Mac OS 7 and 8 is Shareway IP.

 Hi,

I would love to have a fax program that I could use just to be able
to send and receive the occasional fax on my Mac. I certainly don't
fax enough to justify buying a Fax machine - although it seems Faxstf
pro is almost as expensive as buying one !

Are there any decent OX Fax programs for Tiger that are a little
cheaper than Faxstf Pro and work sufficiently for the occasional fax
that anybody here has tried and can recommend ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have,

Who cares if PowerPC is slower than Intel. Business Cares.
You can't stay in business if the compitiation is ahead of
you. No matter how you feel this is the best move Apple
could make. There's nothing you can do about it, so it
would be best to move on. Besides your still going to be
able to purchase a PowerPC Mac for 2 more years. Apple's
going to have to support the PowerPC platform for years to
come. So you can be one of those die-hards and wait till
the bitter end to switch.

No disrespect intended, but where have you been all week.
This is one of the biggest stories on the internet this
week. Apple is moving to Intel. See news stories and
Steve's speech at the WWDC It's a great move on Apple's
part. It will allow Apple to effectively complete against
Dell and other PC venders on price. It may not be the
world's best processor, but it's hard to tell someone that
an iBook running at 1.33 GHz for $1199 is better than a
Dell Notebook running at 2 GHz or faster for $799 is
better. Do the math, Apple made the right move.

I second that. Technics 1200 turntables are a must.

I would never digitize vinyl with an iMic! It's inferior sound quality.
Do you guy hate music or what? Cheeezh!

24 bit / 96Khz is minimum standards these days for recording and is only
a few hundred dollars, less second hand. There are alternatives for
PCMCIA, USB as well FireWire. Why would anyone hate music so much to
settle for something else is beyond me. Even if the end result is Mp3,
the result *will* be better with a high quality recording to start with.

Also, I'd recommend to use a quality vinyl player. I use a Technics 1200
deck , as I mainly record dance music, mixed for that deck. But for other
music I'd use Linn or similar. Remember quality cabling!

As for software, I'd use Peak for the demo period for a short project or
 get SoundStudio.

Re: Recording records/tapes

2005-04-06 Thread Aaron Willems
Chris,

I don't know know what kind of a budget you have, but I'm working on a big
project right now, where I'm digitalizing hundreds of 12 singles, and DJ
Cassette Mix tapes. I set up a G5 with Bias Peak, SoundSoap Pro, Roxio Toast
and Jam. I use Peak Peak or CD Spin Doctor to record from my Mixer Board. I
then use Peak and SoundSoap Pro to clean up the audio. From there I use Jam
to master the CD's. This is on the high end of what your probably looking
for, so other people on the list I'm sure will have a cheaper solution.

Regards,

Aaron Willems

 Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with doing this? What software
is available to handle this? I will need additional hardware for my ibook g4
to do this, what do I need?

 Thanks for the advice,

 Sincerely,
 Chris

Re: ibook

2005-03-25 Thread Aaron Willems
I don't believe so. The iBook can only mirror the display to the external
monitor. In order to do that, you would have to leave the lid up. Hence you
would have to leave the monitor on. I have heard of some hacks to the iBooks
to allow the feature you requested. It's almost certain any such hack would
void your Apple warranty. Apple turns this feature off on purpose to
separate it from the PowerBook.

Re: Applecare, how long should it take?

2005-01-25 Thread Aaron Willems
I strongly disagree with your statement Geoffrey. I think AppleCare is a
must. I have never had any bad dealings with Apple in regards to having it.
Case in point. My new G5 had a Bad Power Supply. I took it to the Apple
Store. They fixed it, but forgot to calibrate the Machine after replacing
the Power Supply. My G5 started blowing the fans at full speed. The noise
was so bad, it hurt my ears. I called Apple and told them what happened.
They apologized for the error. Then they offered to send a technician to my
apartment to fix my new G5. They understood that the G5 was a heavily
machine, and would have been a burden to take back to the Apple Store. So a
technician came out to my apartment. He fixed my new G5 in 30 min. None of
this would have happened if I hadn't had AppleCare.

There are always two sides to a coin.

Regards,

Aaron Willems

Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but Apple Care IS Bad News 17 days for
a screen, what kind of moronic planning is that
 Tick Tick Tick.
Call them, ask for a supervisor, don't get yelling and screaming, even
though you may at times feel the urge and ALWAYS start a conversation
with can I have your name and ext number, I like to work with good
people. Otherwise if the conversation turns negative you have the name
 of the person.

One more thing, if you think there is a problem get it fixed before the
last year of Apple Care and for sure the last 6 months. Less then 6
months they will blame it on a spilled liquid sometime in the last 6
months and Apple does not cover that.

 Good luck
 Geoff

Re: Applecare, how long should it take?

2005-01-25 Thread Aaron Willems
You know something, I might get some slack from the List Nanny, but I have
to say it. What are you doing on this list? You sound like a PC user, who's
feels obligated to join a Mac group, to start up something. I believe they
have a name for that. It's called a troll.

Aaron

For what it costs and how much Apple hypes the quality of
their products AppleCare should be damn near instant. Of course, for
those like me that paid $2200 for a Pismo 4 years ago that now works
when it feels like it AppleCare is no longer available. Now of course
Apple's reccommended solution to this problem is for me to give them
another couple grand for a new AlBook and 3 more years of
Applecare Fat chance!- I can buy a stack of Pismo's for that
kinda money, compute for years on them, and never drop a dime at the
Apple Store again. No wonder Apple's share of the computer market
 continues to drop.

But isn't the new Mac Mini supposed to draw in the
switchers to replace the old Apple fanatics that have been driven
off? Today at the local MicroCenter store the Mini Mac was being
ignored while the aisles of the Build Your Own System section were
busy. With 20% off on BYOS stuff the Shuttle et al cubes look
tempting. And one can pretty much see that the PC vendors will match
the Mac Mini on price with an LCD display, keyboard, mouse, etc.
 thrown in to boot..

And given Apples recent quality problems, one can easily see
busted Mac Mini's backlogged months for repairs, while the
switchers switch right back never to buy Apple again!

My 12 PowerBook has been in the shop for over a week.

I would like to repose the question in the title of

I've waited 17 days as of today for my iBook to be done.
i won't go
into a rant about the conversation I had this morning

service rep, but they claim they are waiting on a new
14 display, and
that no estimate can be given anymore on when it will be
ready since
whoever manufactures these displays is behind on
production, and
therefore no displays are available until further
notice.
I am glad that the apple service techs did a thorough
job in going over
my iBook, realizing there was a problem with the display
and expecting
to fix it prior to sending it back to me. Kudos to
them. I'm also
glad that this service and iBook are otherwise excellent
products, thus
my impatience as to when it will get back.
I don't however, see why poor production and inventory
planning by
either the display manufacturer or apple, as the case
may be, has to
become my problem like this.
So, once again, I'd like to know, how long should I
continue to wait
like this for a product I paid for months ago? Is there
truly nothing
I can say or do about this as the service rep told me
this morning?

Technically your right. It should make no difference. All I can tell you, is
that both base stations were in the same spot, and I was only 12 feet away
right from the base distance, direct sight, no wall interference. I can't
explain it, but I'm much happier now.

Aaron

 Hmm, na..

 You had
187 kbps with 11Mb/s AirPort and
 378 kbps with 54Mb/s AirPort Xtreme ???

As both download speeds are much slower than the Airport
surely it can't be affected by the actual Wireless speed ???

Re: Printing problems - OS X - router - HP LJ ???

Might be a Postscript error. I have various HP printers here at the office.
The issue you described happened a lot when we first moved to OS X. I traced
the problem to a Postscript font that we carried over from OS 9. Once I got
a new version of the font, the problem went away. Might be worth
investigating.

I am having consistent printing problems. I send a page
to print but then it just disappears into thin air...

Using different Macs all running OS X.3.4 thru 6
- D-Link DI-704P (Router Print server)
- HP LJ5MP

Some print jobs work fine while others just disappear.

I never had these problems with OS 9.2 but since moving
all my Macs (iMac G4, AlBook and MDD) they all have this
problem but not all the time...

The chipping on the front top edge of the machine has a rough,

Re: Apple Mail

2004-12-24 Thread Aaron Willems
Dude,
Take a chill pill. I'm the biggest Mac fan on the planet.
I even have my own website dedicated to my platform of
choice. I have a G5 at home, that is completely Microsoft
free. I keep all my Microsoft Applications on my G4
PowerBook, which I use to access the office when I'm
offsite.

Second, I don't use Exchange at the office. I set up an
Email Server using Communigate Pro. It works like a champ.
The reason why I think Microsoft Office 2004 kicks Ass, is
that everyone at the Office loves it. When they found out
they could set up a shared calendar in the Project Center,
you don't know how happy that made them. It's my job to
keep things running smoothly. If everyone at the office
was using a different email client that wouldn't happen.

How many offices do you know that are 95% Mac based. I
don't know of many. Only our Finance department has PC's,
plus a few stragglers.

I'll leave it at that. Happy Holidays.
Take Care.
Aaron Willems
http://www.macmanifest.com

So if you are in a position of controlling over a 100
Macs, which I honestly respect, get Apple on the phone,
tell them the problems, maybe they have a solution you
have not thought of. Your a player, they are at least
going to listen or read your typed mail asking for an
answer, probably even better approach.

As long as there are Tech people like you, who will not
take Apple to the mat and demand the functionality you
need to work in this, *Windows World* and just push aside
Apple Mail or other Apple products, what are you doing ?
Your just helping to cut the product share even more,
when you have not even asked Apple about your problems.
There might be solutions to what you need.

Your also telling 100 plus workers using Macs, Apple
Mail is a failure. What does that say to your Mac users
when it comes time to buy a computer and most people use
them off work for, emailing and surfing. Well the tech
guy at our company does not like Apple Mail says it does
not do things right, Internet Explorer is not being
updated, so guess we better get a Wintel.

When these 100 workers are asked by their friends, what
computer they should buy, the workers are now the
computer experts, their now the Tech guy, so from your
influence against Mail it just blasts loud and clear
Apple Mail is inferior, buy Wintel and it grows like a
virus.

You have some juice use it. 100 computers will not get
you a free ride on Steves Gulfstream, but they will
listen.
That's the beauty of the Mac the software meshes with
the hardware and no matter if there big or small. You
plop a wad of M$$ and it just puts FOD in your engine.
Job security I guess
Geof

Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?

2004-12-21 Thread Aaron Willems
I agree Entourage 2004 rocks. The project center is awesome. The calendar,
project center, and Notes all work together seamlessly. I won't support
Apple mail on my Network. I tell everyone if they want me to support their
Email account they need to use Entourage. Apple needs to integrate iCal and
the Address book into Mail to make it a competitive application.

I personally love Entourage. Mail is lacking some very important features.
Like the ability to read a thread and after deleting having it go on to the
next message without opening a new window.

Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?

2004-12-21 Thread Aaron Willems
So everyone on your network has to spend an extra $400 just to use
supported E-mail, because *you* like it?

Please, We are a large scale operation. I included in my budget a site
license for Office 2004 at $208 a copy. So nobody had to shell any money,
except me.

Jeez, I've heard of BOFH's, but that takes the cake!

Not even worth a reply.

I should be able to tell my system what is my address store, what is my
calendar program, and what is my e-mail program, and use small, fast
programs that are designed to do one thing and one thing well.

That's works for you, not for our work environment.

Why straightjacket everyone into a single solution?

Simple, when I have to support over a 100 Macs and a few PC's, I want them
all running the same software. It's easier for me to manage. Plus, in case
you haven't heard yet, 95% of the world uses Microsoft Office. When your
working for a large company, with lots of clients, compatibility is a must.

Re: Applecare for PowerBooks

2004-12-17 Thread Aaron Willems
I always purchase AppleCare on desktops. The one problem I have with
AppleCare on PowerBooks and iBooks is personal damage. If you drop, dent,
scratch the PowerBook in any way, you basically void the warranty. I have
received Quotes for as much as 1500 hundred dollars from Apple on damaged
PowerBooks. If you PowerBook is in good condition, and you know you can keep
it that way, then by all means purchase it. Having the hardware covered
under warranty is always a plus. If you don't think that's going to happen,
then you might want to pass.

The end of the first year of warranty is fast approaching for my G4
Powerbook and I am looking at have to pay almost $400.00 to extend it via
 Applecare.

I am wondering how many people here have purchased Applecare on their
Powerbooks and whether you consider it worth the money.

Is there the possibility of absorbing aluminum through your skin
from the palmrest of the AlBook? I've heard people complain of

it seems like a possibility that aluminum molecules are being

I've seen this one before. There are two ways to delete it. If you have OS 9

way to do it is to launch the terminal and delete the file via the command
line. You can use the cd command to navigate to the desktop, and then use
the rm command to delete the file.

an incomplete file on my desktop that I would like to trash. When I try to
trash it I am told that the file is used by another task right now and to

Bryon,

To be perfectly honest with you, I don't run anti-virus software on my Mac.
I don't find it necessary. I know what to look for. I just delete it when it
comes in. None of the current viruses out there effect the Mac platform.
They are all Windows viruses. It doesn't mean that someday, someone will for
make a virus for the Mac platform. We have been lucky so far.

You might want to consider running anti-virus software, if your concerned
about passing a virus to a friend on a Windows box. Do you have a .Mac
subscription. Along with getting your .Mac email account, you get a copy of
Virex and a one year subscription to versiontracker.com. Might not be a bad
deal, if your considering running anti-virus software on your Mac.

But in general what do you recommend?

OS 10.3.5

2004-08-09 Thread Aaron Willems
I just installed OS 10.3.5. I've been running it for 2 hours now with no
problems. I give this advice to anyone who's planning on installing it. Be
sure to boot off your Panther CD first, and repair the Boot Disk, followed
by repairing disk permissions. DO THIS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE UPDATE! After
you install the update, be sure to boot off the CD one more time, and run
disk permissions once again.

By following this simple advice, you can avoid most major catastrophes.

One could do this from the command line like so:

sudo diskutil repairPermissions / (press return and write your admin pass)

This is better than using the Panther CD as all the latest info from the
 updates is regarded.

 Latest news on Steve Jobs:

I know this is off topic, but is it? This is afterall, Steve's
Universe. Anyway, he had a rare form of cancer which he is recovering
from with no complications and should be back to work running Apple by
September. Some guy I never heard of is running it in the meantime. .
.no, not Steve Wozniak. Well, just thought I'd spread the happy news!
Steve is too young to have to worry about stuff like this. America
needs inventors like 'em! (This was just quoted from a talk show on
 AM 640 which aired tonight).

Re: How do you manually import bookmarks (favorites) into Safari?!

2004-07-06 Thread Aaron Willems
For any member who wants to force Safari to import their Netscape or IE
bookmarks, you need to use the Terminal to accomplish this task. Follow
these steps.

1. Quit Safari if it is open.
2. Drag the target bookmark files back to their original location.
3. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
4. Type this in the Terminal.
defaults delete com.apple.SafariNetscapeAndMozillaFavoritesWereImported
5. Press Return.
6. Type this in the terminal.
defaults delete com.apple.Safari IEFavoritesWereImported
7. Press Return.
8. Quit Terminal.
9. Open Safari.
--
Aaron Willems

 Once again,

I'm stuck wondering why Apple thinks everyone is gonna get all the
answers they need in there incredibly lacking help program. According
to it, Safari is supposed to import all my IE favorites the first time
it runs. This is simply not true. It doesn't do anything except boot
up. I check the bookmarks, and they are not there. I would like to
use Safari as my default browser, but until my favorites can be
imported, I guess I'm stuck with Explorer. I tried FireFox, but it to
doesn't import favorites from IE, although at least Firefox imports
bookmarks from Safari and Netscape automatically even though that
doesn't do anything for me. Any ideas?

Re: Can OS 9 be installed?

2004-06-28 Thread Aaron Willems
Can this be done only if the hard drive is, or has already been,
partitioned? I had always been under the impression that OS 9 had to be
 installed first.

To make a new partition on your computer, without reformatting your hard
drive, you should check out this cool program called VolumneWorks. See link
Below.

http://www.subrosasoft.com/thestore/default.php

On a related note, does Apple install OS 9 on all new machines? There
were restore disks for OS X, but they didn't supply any for OS 9.

OS 9 on all new machines is for running classic only. If you have your
software restore disk, and you select customize, you will see the option to
install classic. Just remember all new machines only boot into OS X. I hope
you are not under the impression that by installing classic on your new
G5's, that you will able to boot into OS 9. Those days are gone.

Re: Can OS 9 be installed?

2004-06-28 Thread Aaron Willems
NO, when you install classic, you install a full version of OS 9. So as long
as you have your software restore CD's, your good to go. And, yes Classic
(OS 9) is an emulator under OS X, just like Virtual PC.
--
Aaron Willems

I'm confused though. I thought Classic could only be invoked if a full
install of OS 9 were first installed. I guess I thought of Classic as
an emulator that wouldn't work without the actual full install of OS 9
being on the hard drive. Does the customize option mean that the
restore disks contain a version of OS 9 to make Classic work? Again, I
guess I'm thinking that the emulator (Classic) can't function
independently from the full install of OS 9.

So then i thought, if these machines ever need a clean install, will
Classic ever work if OS 9 were not first installed? I'm assuming the
lab still has copies of OS 9 on hand if need be.

You need to download and install Microsoft Media Player for OS 9. The last
version they made for OS 9 was version 7. If the media file contains the
codec for Windows Media player 9, then your out of luck. Windows Media

I'm assuming your still running OS 9. In your system folder under

running OS 9 on your iBook then place it under System Folder/Preferences.

Re: OS 10.3.4

2004-06-08 Thread Aaron Willems
I administer over a 100 Macs at my Office. This is the procedure I do before
running an OS Update. First, I boot off the Panther CD, and run Disk First
Aid, and I also run Fix Disk Permissions. Then I boot back up, and download
the full combo update for Mac OS 10.3.4. The one that's 81 MB. When I do
this, I avoid problems 99.99% of the time. My advice would be to boot off
the CD, and do the same thing. Then reinstall the full 10.3.4 update.

Anyone having issues with OS 10.3.4? My TiBook 800 DVI (768MB RAM)
was running happily with 10.3.3 but after I recently installed
10.3.4, I get slow performance, lockups (mostly Safari) and failure
to log out correctly (never gets back to the log-in screen). Any
 clues?

I had two Pismos, that also wouldn't start. They had been left on a shelf

weeks, the battery lights came on, and starting charging. After that, they
