Re: Real computers
David, Thanks for your story. I talk to other IT people at the bus stop in the morning on the way to work. I get some of the same looks. I actually got one of them to admit that they knew Apple was better, but that Microsoft equaled Job Security. They were grateful that Microsoft was full of Bugs, Viruses, and Spyware, because it kept them employed. Re: external monitor on iBook
You can hook up an external Monitor to an iBook, but it will only mirror the display from the iBook. So if the top resolution of the iBook is 1024 x 758 that's what the external monitor will be. Since the iBook can only mirror the external display, both the iBook and external monitor will show the same thing. If you want your external monitor to support higher resolutions, and be treated as separate device, you need to get a PowerBook. Hope that makes since. -- Aaron Willems IT Administrator Hi. I finally got my best friend to switch and she wants to buy an iBook but she wants to be able to occasionally use it on an external monitor. She is completely not tech-savvy and when she went to the local Apple store and told the Apple Genius this he didn't listen and went into great gobs of detail, so much so that I couldn't make any sense of it when she got back. So I thought I'd turn to you all for help. Can anyone tell me a quick and reliable place to go for which models can run external monitors with which cables, etc.? No disrespect intended, but where have you been all week. This is one of the biggest stories on the internet this week. Apple is moving to Intel. See news stories and Steve's speech at the WWDC It's a great move on Apple's part. It will allow Apple to effectively complete against Dell and other PC venders on price. It may not be the world's best processor, but it's hard to tell someone that an iBook running at 1.33 GHz for $1199 is better than a Dell Notebook running at 2 GHz or faster for $799 is better. I second that. Technics 1200 turntables are a must. -- Aaron Willems I would never digitize vinyl with an iMic! It's inferior sound quality. Do you guy hate music or what? Cheeezh! 24 bit / 96Khz is minimum standards these days for recording and is only a few hundred dollars, less second hand. There are alternatives for PCMCIA, USB as well FireWire. Why would anyone hate music so much to settle for something else is beyond me. Even if the end result is Mp3, the result *will* be better with a high quality recording to start with. Also, I'd recommend to use a quality vinyl player. I use a Technics 1200 deck , as I mainly record dance music, mixed for that deck. But for other music I'd use Linn or similar. Re: Applecare, how long should it take?
I strongly disagree with your statement Geoffrey. I think AppleCare is a must. I have never had any bad dealings with Apple in regards to having it. Case in point. My new G5 had a Bad Power Supply. I took it to the Apple Store. They fixed it, but forgot to calibrate the Machine after replacing the Power Supply. My G5 started blowing the fans at full speed. The noise was so bad, it hurt my ears. I called Apple and told them what happened. They apologized for the error. Then they offered to send a technician to my apartment to fix my new G5. They understood that the G5 was a heavily machine, and would have been a burden to take back to the Apple Store. So a technician came out to my apartment. He fixed my new G5 in 30 min. None of this would have happened if I hadn't had AppleCare. There are always two sides to a coin. Regards, Aaron Willems Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but Apple Care IS Bad News 17 days for a screen, what kind of moronic planning is that Tick Tick Tick. Call them, ask for a supervisor, don't get yelling and screaming, even though you may at times feel the urge and ALWAYS start a conversation with can I have your name and ext number, I like to work with good people. Otherwise if the conversation turns negative you have the name of the person. Re: Applecare, how long should it take?
You know something, I might get some slack from the List Nanny, but I have to say it. What are you doing on this list? You sound like a PC user, who's feels obligated to join a Mac group, to start up something. I believe they have a name for that. It's called a troll. Aaron For what it costs and how much Apple hypes the quality of their products AppleCare should be damn near instant. Of course, for those like me that paid $2200 for a Pismo 4 years ago that now works when it feels like it AppleCare is no longer available. Now of course Apple's reccommended solution to this problem is for me to give them another couple grand for a new AlBook and 3 more years of Applecare Fat chance!- I can buy a stack of Pismo's for that kinda money, compute for years on them, and never drop a dime at the Apple Store again. No wonder Apple's share of the computer market continues to drop. But isn't the new Mac Mini supposed to draw in the switchers to replace the old Apple fanatics that have been driven off? Today at the local MicroCenter store the Mini Mac was being ignored while the aisles of the Build Your Own System section were busy. With 20% off on BYOS stuff the Shuttle et al cubes look tempting. And one can pretty much see that the PC vendors will match the Mac Mini on price with an LCD display, keyboard, mouse, etc. thrown in to boot.. And given Apples recent quality problems, one can easily see busted Mac Mini's backlogged months for repairs, while the switchers switch right back never to buy Apple again! Re: Applecare, how long should it take?
My 12 PowerBook has been in the shop for over a week. They told me before I checked it in, that they were backordered on parts. They quoted 2 weeks. It seems the whole system is back ordered for parts. So I'm sure your not the only one suffering. Hang in there. Aaron On Mon, 24 Jan 2005 20:51:12 -0800 (PST) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I too am waiting on a LCD replacement on a 14.1 ibook. Simon I would like to repose the question in the title of this. How long should it take? I've waited 17 days as of today for my iBook to be done. i won't go into a rant about the conversation I had this morning with an apple service rep, but they claim they are waiting on a new 14 display, and that no estimate can be given anymore on when it will be ready since whoever manufactures these displays is behind on production, and therefore no displays are available until further notice. I am glad that the apple service techs did a thorough job in going over my iBook, realizing there was a problem with the display and expecting to fix it prior to sending it back to me. Kudos to them. I'm also glad that this service and iBook are otherwise excellent products, thus my impatience as to when it will get back. I don't however, see why poor production and inventory planning by either the display manufacturer or apple, as the case may be, has to become my problem like this. So, once again, I'd like to know, how long should I continue to wait like this for a product I paid for months ago? Is there truly nothing I can say or do about this as the service rep told me this morning? Brian -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... No issues with the Distance. But I'll tell you what happened on my Home Network. I have Comcast cable. When I had it plugged into a Snow Base Station, I only got about a 187 kps download speed. Re: Apple Mail
Dude, Take a chill pill. I'm the biggest Mac fan on the planet. I even have my own website dedicated to my platform of choice. I have a G5 at home, that is completely Microsoft free. I keep all my Microsoft Applications on my G4 PowerBook, which I use to access the office when I'm offsite. Second, I don't use Exchange at the office. I set up an Email Server using Communigate Pro. It works like a champ. The reason why I think Microsoft Office 2004 kicks Ass, is that everyone at the Office loves it. When they found out they could set up a shared calendar in the Project Center, you don't know how happy that made them. It's my job to keep things running smoothly. If everyone at the office was using a different email client that wouldn't happen. How many offices do you know that are 95% Mac based. I don't know of many. Only our Finance department has PC's, plus a few stragglers. I'll leave it at that. Happy Holidays. Take Care. Aaron Willems http://www.macmanifest.com So if you are in a position of controlling over a 100 Macs, which I honestly respect, get Apple on the phone, tell them the problems, maybe they have a solution you have not thought of. Your a player, they are at least going to listen or read your typed mail asking for an answer, probably even better approach. As long as there are Tech people like you, who will not take Apple to the mat and demand the functionality you need to work in this, *Windows World* and just push aside Apple Mail or other Apple products, what are you doing ? Your just helping to cut the product share even more, when you have not even asked Apple about your problems. There might be solutions to what you need. Your also telling 100 plus workers using Macs, Apple Mail is a failure. What does that say to your Mac users when it comes time to buy a computer and most people use them off work for, emailing and surfing. Well the tech guy at our company does not like Apple Mail says it does not do things right, Internet Explorer is not being updated, so guess we better get a Wintel. When these 100 workers are asked by their friends, what computer they should buy, the workers are now the computer experts, their now the Tech guy, so from your influence against Mail it just blasts loud and clear Apple Mail is inferior, buy Wintel and it grows like a virus. You have some juice use it. 100 computers will not get you a free ride on Steves Gulfstream, but they will listen. Re: Can OS 9 be installed?
NO, when you install classic, you install a full version of OS 9. So as long as you have your software restore CD's, your good to go. And, yes Classic (OS 9) is an emulator under OS X, just like Virtual PC. -- Aaron Willems I'm confused though. I thought Classic could only be invoked if a full install of OS 9 were first installed. I guess I thought of Classic as an emulator that wouldn't work without the actual full install of OS 9 being on the hard drive. Does the customize option mean that the restore disks contain a version of OS 9 to make Classic work? Again, I guess I'm thinking that the emulator (Classic) can't function independently from the full install of OS 9. This is all because of my storing it upright rather than flat? This means the boards and/or wires inside the Pismo could have come undone? Before I take it to the Apple Store (), I'll let it sit flat for a while and hope for a miracle. I should register at one of the online prayer sites :) Really... If anyone has any other troubleshooting ideas I could try, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again, Donald -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Snow ABS specs
Bob. This one is tricky, check the URL below from Apple. It's the Snow one, Dual Ethernet. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106595 You can download the Manual PDF, it's labeled 034-1017. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50053 Regards, -- Aaron Willems I am looking for the specifications, including model #, for the Snow Apple Base Station. I have spent a couple of hours searching Apple's site, Google, even MacTacker. But I have come up dry. I know I could find it if I kept searching, but time it becoming a factor. Does someone know of a URL to find this information? A PDF file is fine too. Thanks -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo Hard drive problems
Bad news, my friend your hard drive has died. The clicking sound, is the tall tale sign your hard drive is dead. The second factor is Tech tool Pro can't find your hard drive. I hope you have your data backed up. If you haven't backed up your data, you might try the freezer trick, to temp mount your hard drive so you can back up your data before installing a new hard drive. Regards,. -- Aaron Willems Ok, I have a 500mhz Pismo. All has been fine, I tried to start it up, but all I get is click, click, click from the drive. It has a 48 gig Travelstar in it. After the clicking, it shows the question mark and the finder folder. I tried booting with tech tool pro, all it found for volumes was the CD!! I really hope this is not the end of my hard drive. Re: Microsoft on the Mac
I couldn't agree more with you. MS office for PC users works great at the office, so does Office 2001 for my OS 9 users. I have had some problems with Office X and OS X, nothing I couldn't handle. It usually comes down to fonts. Fonts and MS Office X, can really throw OS X for a loop. You might want to start there with your crashing problems. Do you believe Apple products are cheap, or Apple is not in the business to make money? I have been a Mac user since 1985 and have never worked in a Mac environment, but I have worked all of my IT career in the DOS and Windows world.all versions of Windows. Perhaps there is a reason that everyone in your office use MS products, 99% of the time they just work!!!most folks work is not in computers, they use computers to do their job and must have something that works. Have you considered that perhaps the reason your machine crashes is due to poor application installation, systems and applications not being up to date, poor maintenance, and or just bad user practices? Like it or not Microsoft is here and is a leader and in some cases the standard. If you don't like Microsoft products THEN DON'T USE THEM and stop bitching! No I own no MS or Apple stock and do not work for either excellent company. Sincerely, Jim Scolman. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
