First thing to do is take it back to the store and ask for a replacement
(they're usually more willing to replace than refund). If that doesn't work
then you could try finding a program to low-level it. I don't know of any
such programs on the Mac but if you have a friend with a PC then a program
like Max LLF would do the trick.

I OS9 Tech Tool recognised two three of the partitions, and I was able to
remount them. But now they appear as Locked read-only! I cant reinitialize
 the disc in Tech Tool.
In OSZ they still do not appear.

Would FWB Disk tools work?

POL Re: [OT] Latin

As a youth I was taken to meet Jimmy Hoffa by an older friend. They had
grown up together and worked together in their youth. They had gone their
separate ways in terms of business but remained friends. I saw the sign on
his desk, in Latin, and asked what it meant. He replied: Don't let the
bastards wear you down. The English stuck with me but not the Latin.
The friend who took me was a successful businessman who told me that no
matter what anyone said, he thought Jimmy Hoffa was a great man, that Hoffa
had taken teamsters from being treated like scum by the employers and turned
the job into a way to make a good living. My friend believed it would never
have happened but for Hoffa.

Caution. Good sentiment but caution. I'm in the restaurant business
and have exposure to owners of various ethnic derivations many of
whom are reputed to have organized crime connections.

They are charming people but I have no illusions, and I do NOT admire them.

Jimmy Hoffa may well have helped the Teamsters but at what price to
their reputation? Remember the Faustian bargain.

To bring it back to computers...we seem to have come into an era of
low inflation and real bargains in technology, and in fact we seem to
get more and pay less all the time. But is anyone really satisfied
with the state of tech support these days, for example? Something
has to give and it's usually US.

Oh, BTW, I had 3 years of HSchool Latin, 2 were under a lovely lady

Moses Hadas, foremost Latin scholar of the last century. Now you
cannot find the mother language on the course list in many schools.

For sure, that's the first thing to do if you haven't had it on

As we are talking WallStreets here, don't forget the Apple Battery Reset

My Wallstreet Date Time function consistently seems to lose about
15-30 seconds as evidenced by the adjustment that occurs almost every
time when I tell the control panel to manually set time now. It
seems oblivious to the interval between those checks. Also, it may
actually be more serious since the CPanel is supposed to auto-check
for differences often anyway and I am merely noting what changes the
auto function has not fixed.

Is this kind of thing clearly indicative of bad PRAM battery? I have
not noted other problems other than the usual aggravating random
crashes that dog me from time to time.

I have used the Asante Local Talk bridge for about 5 years with my

experience yet with OSX.

BTW, thanks to whomever recommended Fixyourownprinter.com (?). I
bought a kit from them to replace my main paper pickup roller and
rehab/clean various parts inside. Worked like a charm. My NTX is
alive again, no more paper pickup faults. Opt for the included
how-to video on CD instead of VHS, helps when it comes to starting

guide is right there with where you are working on the printer.

MAC Re: Pismo PRAM Battery

2004-01-30 Thread James G \Jim\ Hardwick
20040130

I had not noticed that the PBFIXIT battery was used, as stated in
the 'more details' link; those sly beggars!

The appropriate part for the Pismo is Part Number 922-3829, and the
same battery is used in both bronze keyboard and firewire
powerbooks. There is a picture link in one of the discussions that
I gave the URL to:
http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/.Pictures/take-apart-pismo/pismo_takeapart_03.jpg
I've verified that the PRAM battery in my Pismo looks just like that.

The same part number is given on the datavis page, at:
http://www.datavis.com/webapp/commerce/command/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=430971prmenbr=2000
and the price is $25. Apparently new and unused, and Apple brand.
Although the picture does not look quite right (I'd be more inclined
to trust the part number than the picture), perhaps the battery
unfolds?

I don't meant to always be a bearer of bad news...

The # on the Datavis site is not the same as the one on the pbfixit
site. If you verified the # on the Apple site, then pbfixit must use
their own.

But one other note--Datavis says they are Apple auth, but that they
only ship to 3 states???

And they do not show Wallstreet batts, growl,

-Jim H

Subject: Pismo PRAM Battery

I am having an unbelievably difficult time finding one of the above. Anyone
know where I can find a NEW one for a reasonable price?
Thanks,

MB!
Michael,

Here's one for $30.
http://www.pbfixit.com/cart/catalog/category_17_Batteries_page_1.html
And I see one for $25 at www.datavis.com

You might find this discussion thread useful, especially other posts
that talk about a loose connector:
http://www.pbsource.com/forum/index.cgi?read=14288

Those still seem to be rather steep prices, just for a PRAM battery.
I can't help but wonder if one were to disassemble the apple
battery, if there might be some obvious components that could be
replaced. Perhaps they used a standard rechargable cell that you
could duct-tape in place?

--Jim.
-
The one at PBFIXIT is used, take note. I could not find the one at Datavis.
Local store quoted 75$ +shipping to get one for my Wallstreet in (my
time function seems unstable so I suspect my battery is going).

Good luck and let us know where the bargains are,

Jim

There are many comparisons on line on these 3 cameras and all cost

Hi, Mark,

To avoid giving you no for an answer, I'll help as far as I know.
Perhaps you'll wind up where you want to...go.

With my lack of networking sophistication and no OS X experience, I
can only check basics with you, so if you are OK on those we'll have
to wait for more help when someone in a part of the world awake
chimes in.

1- Are you going thru a hub/switch or cabling direct (computer to computer)?

2- Are you using a cable appropriate to the method of connection
(though I hear some newer switches can autodetect the type of
cable)--wired straight or wired null (if cabling direct)?

3- I don't yet use OS X, but in 9 you need to make sure your
appletalk is set to ethernet, not for example, the modem/printer port
on the g3 (assuming it has same?);

Let's see how you do on these--HTH

From my experience--

In my WS 266 (os 9.2.1) I note that my NewerTech pc card, like all my
pc cards, must be carefully seated in either slot. If you are not
careful, you may misseat it and even damage the cage--apply slight
pressure to keep it going in level but pulled up toward the top or
pushed a little toward the bottom. I always put mine in the top, but
it may do just as well in the bottom.

There is a spring loading of sorts so you do have to push harder
right before the limit is reached going in.

Some dexterity required--probably why a lot of cages in Wallstreets
wind up damaged. Mine was replaced under Applecare once. But guess
who damaged it--a technician, while it was in for motherboard
replacement.

BTW, I had to buy a newer firewire card, from Western Digital, to
work with the firewire drive I bought. Newer was not new enough.

My humble suggestion to the list nan, unless you want some of us to

Uh, yeah

Open a window on the root of disk 1, command-a, drag all to disk 2.
Wait until done. Don't forget the stuff in the desktop folder.

CCC was developed because you *couldn't* do that in OS X, so your
answer is actually, no CCC was *never* available for OS9.

I expect Disk Copy would do that as well, though I never tried it
with hard drives, seeing that the Finder sufficed just fine.

But what about copying the system files? I always ran into to
trouble there when trying to mass restore like you are describing.
Does copying the DT database in 9 cover that problem?

Have just set up a little three computer network in the house...
picked up a D-Link router and a ton of cable. Although nothing was
easy (except running cable) in the set up, i got it working. Found
that the G3 Lombard was losing the connection every few minutes and
nothing i would do seemed to reconnect other then rebooting (and
sometimes that didn't work) All my settings were right, etc
etc... As a last resort i put a tiny bit of pressure on the ethernet
cable plug at the rear of the machine... That was the problem... the
connection could be moved and my router lights would come on and go
offA tiny cardboard shim seems to help, but still lose the
connection once and awhile... Is having the actual port replaced a
huge job ? Or is this anything anyone has run into?

gordon
-

Gordon, I do my own ethernet terminations (rj-11/14/45) with the
fancy tools, etc, and every once in a while I will make a bad one.
My guess is to check the male plug(s) before you conclude the female
port is bad. Use known trouble free cables, etc, to see if you are
only having trouble with the one cable rj-45 plug. Definitely
cheaper to fix than the Mac's port.

Gently wiggle the wire independently of the male plug if you
can--might reveal the wire connection as the problem more readily.

If the plug is actually loose, well

putting it back in fixes the problem. The keys then work for a few minutes
and then the problem emerges again.

go to start it i get nothing -- nada -- zilch.
i tryed the reset button (holding for 10 seconds) still nothing and i know
the adaptor works as i tryed it on a friends pismo and it works.
so what do i do to start my powerbook as of right now it does nothing no
chime etc.
HELP please

Lost your parameter battery's charge (or it just died) I would bet.
Mine is a wallstreet, but I believe I recall it is a rechargeable on
pismo. If so the 24 hr charge will help. The pismo owners here can
probably comment more knowledgeably.

2. I'm normally working someplace where I can use the power
adapter. Is this OK, or does the battery need to be used
occasionally and then recharged? If yes, how often and how low
should the charge go before I recharge?
Someone else may correct me, but AFAIK, there is no memory
associated with the batteries Apple uses in the iBook and PowerBook.
You can either leave the computer plugged in or not; I've run my
battery down multiple times and have not yet noticed any dropoff in
available charge. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I wouldn't
worry too much about it.

Phil, the only amplification I might make on your advice is that the
Li-on batteries have a life limit as to charge cycles, so short
charging them when they do not need much charging might constitute a
bad thing.

Certainly they are far removed from the memory-hampered Ni-Cad
batteries of old (and new Motorola GMRS radios). But our
compulsive desire to always have our batteries fully charged probably
contributes to shortening the lives of these high tech energy cells.

I thought about this after discussing the rather short life I was
getting from my cell phone batteries with a local vendor of same.
Same issue, and think of how many of us simply plug in our cell
phones to either our car or home charger every chance we get. Mine
have only been lasting about a year, though the advent of digital
service in our area has helped a lot (uses less power).

Comment, anyone?

3- Anyone care to post diagrams on how to open the various batteries

When someone contacts you off-ebay about an item they can give you
a heck of a deal onreally, when were you born, yesterday.

If they cheat eBay, why not you?

Kinda like here at our restaurant. If my employees were to see me
cheating the IRS big time or taking sanitation shortcuts to save
money, they'd probably not be very disinclined to cheat me--stealing
food, etc. You'd be surprised how honest people are with others they
see as honest. And we lose almost nothing to employee theft or
customer bad checks (yes, we take personal checks).

Caveat emptor, but the Golden Rule works, too!

2003-06-17 Thread James G (Jim) Hardwick
20030617

One other way to get analog video into digital is to use a Sony
PC-100 or certain other mini-dv camcorders which has the capability
to pull vhs via regular RCA/S-video cabling onto its digital tape,
giving you a no-loss copy to transfer from, to your Mac and into
iMovie, or otherwise. It's pretty fast with my g4-733 destop using
fw but I can only imagine using my Wallstreet or a Lombard.

I used an older Hi-8 Sony for years and will soon transfer all that
video to digital using a Hi-8 deck I kept when I sold the camcorder,
then I will sell the deck. Maybe I will put it out onto dvd, but
some is not worth saving, making the process one to procrastinate on.

MAC G3 Series PB (wallstreet) 233 power supply needed

2003-05-31 Thread James G (Jim) Hardwick
20030530
RE; though my question is for a Titanium PB 800, is the power supply
transformer as comes from the factory 14volt, 65watts ??I remeber
seeing this somewhere, but now I cannot remember where, to verify
this correct , Or the specs of someother PB ???, thankyou in
advance it sucks getting forgetful

If that's the same one as the Pismo (PB FireWire), they are hard
to find right now. I needed one because my (2nd) power supply had
died recently (the one I got after the original Yo-Yo adapter
died). Both (IIRC) lasted about a year and a half (actually, I
think the first one may have gone just within my original
warranty). This time, I ended up paying more for the adapter,
about $80 (plus 2nd day shipping), because the places which showed
lower prices were out of stock.
Please post if you find a supply that has them in stock and at a
better price.
Thanks,
Jim Rohde

Tho' the connector at the mac will present a challenge, has anyone
tried Radio Shack? They have one hell of a selection of generic
power supplies. At one local outlet a 50 something clerk took one
look at my Olympus DS-330 (voice recorder, mac compatible!), and
guided me to the rack where he set me up with a power pod and
connector (sold together but picked out separately) that worked like
a charm.

One consideration--is power management done in the mac or at the
power supply end?

I have a 98 Wallstreet with 3 power blocks so I am unlikely to need one soon.

Anyone?

Jim
