I figure an original SuperDrive ought to go for $50 or so, based on the
prices of current models, eg: "Pioneer DVR-K05 8X Dual Layer Slim DVD±RW
Drive" @ US$87:

Thanks. If anything, Powerbookguy definitely beats OWC's prices for

will I have to hack some drivers and/or install PatchBurn?

The one from the Tibook worked just fine right off the bat, but that
was in 10.3. You might have to run Patchburn if the drive post-dates
Jaguar.

Hi Yes it will it is just a straight drop into the pismo caddy but
the face plate will not fit as it is slot loading. You can make one
easy enough from an old vst zip drive caddy for the pismo.

Re: Tiger on iBook G4?

2005-10-05 Thread david

Jared:

To keep casual piracy at a minimum, Apple creates its restore/install
CD/DVD sets so that they work only with the specific model they
shipped with. The installer runs a utility to insure that the
computer is the proper model before the installation is started. IOW,
you couldn't use my PowerBook restore DVD on your iBook.

Since you have an iBook G4 and the restore set you bought is also for
a G4 iBook, at first blush it would seem you will be able to use the
CDs. However, if the G4 model you have and the G4 model the disks
were made for are different the disks may not work. For example, a
few weeks ago I took my restore DVD to a friend's how because his
restore DVD was scratched and not working. The only difference
between his PowerBook and mine was that mine was speedbumped. The DVD
wouldn't work.

Tiger on iBook G4?

2005-10-04 Thread Jared Noska

Hello!

I have an iBook G4 that has OS 10.3.9. It came with OS 10.3.3 on DVD. I
bought a set disks of from an iBook G4 that have 10.4.2. I would
imagine that these two would work hand in hand, as I have an iBook G4
and the disks are from an iBook G4.

I would like to know if there is any way that these 10.4.2 disks
wouldn't work.

The only reason I bought another restore disk for my iBook is because
my first one was lost and I could only find Tiger. Maybe this will be
more of a hassle. I dunno.

Just need some input on what you guys think!

Thanks.
Jared

Re: firewall for iBook G4

The built-in firewall in OS X is perfectly good. A router using NAT
does do pretty good at blocking things as well.

Truth be told, out of the box OS X doesn't really need a firewall
because no ports are open: look in the Sharing pane; if nothing's
checked, nothing's open.

Hi, I'm getting ready to buy an iBook G4 this week. What's a good firewall?
A friend of mine has some sort of a router box as a firewall instead of a
program.
All suggestions appreciated and/or webpages with info.

Thanks,

I bought a usb to bluetooth adapter for around $15 almost a year ago and it
works great. It plugs into the usb port, has the size and appearance of a
usb memory stick and give a good range (about 15 - 20 meters).
I certainly would recommend going this route for this part.

Re: AUGH! Ibook G4 with fried hard drive

2005-08-31 Thread Henry Taylor
Not to miss the point of this post, but is the iBook still under
warrenty? If so, replacement is free. If not, there are guides
(pbfixit) that give instructions on how to take apart an iBook ( or
any other book). That being said, taking apart an iBook is no small
feat, though it can be done. I've not priced an airport card or
bluetooth module, though both can be found online.

Good luck on whatever route you take, wish I could be more help.

Henry

I bought an Ibook so as not to be tempted to muck around in its
innards. Now, its hard drive is fried. TTP4 indicates that
everything else is fine, but not even DiskWarrior has been able to
retrieve anything from the HD. There's nothing irreplaceable on it,
so I figured I'd just replace it. The only local apple service
provider wants $75 JUST TO LOOK AT IT! I'm on disability, so doing
things as cheaply as possible is a necessity. How difficult is it
to get an Ibook open? Once I have it open, what issues do I need to
be aware of in replacing the HD? If I've got the sucker open, I'd
like to drop in an airport card and maybe a blue tooth module, but
I've got to balance total costs of replacement and upgrades against
throwing in the towel and just buying a new Ibook, since the new
ones have airport and bluetooth standard. Any advice appreciated.

Yes, I was thinking about something similar after I sent my reply. The
restore DVDs that came with my PowerBook 17" had some specific applications
on them, not mentioning the system that is the least version you can get
installed. You use the same restore DVD whether you want to reinstall the
system or just add an application that you trashed. So, maybe there is some
technical aspect to it...

10.4 on iBook G4 from eMac DVD?

2005-06-23 Thread Jared Noska
Hi! I'm new to the list, so greetings! I have a
problem that is probably easily fixed and all I need
is a little help.

So here's the story:
I obtained an eMac DVD which contains the install for
10.4. I would like to get this on my ibook g4, but I
popped the disc in my drive and it told me that this
software won't work with my computer. All I need now
is to change the gestalt ID so that my computer will
be recognized as an eMac through the install and then
change it later back to my configuration? Is this at
all possible? I've done this before only it was 8.6...

Hope someone can help me otherwise I may have to get
the iBook G4 restores

Thanks,
Jared

Hi Michelle,

Do you live near an Apple store ? If so, take the iBook in and let
them have a look at it.

If not, contact Applecare and advise them of what is happening.
There is no way that the letters should be wearing off already.
Whatever you do, do NOT write on the keys. Your iBook is still
under warranty so you should be able to get some resolution from Apple.

Hi there,

I have only had my iBook G4 14" since May 10th, 2004. I have used it
every day but predominantly for email - not a ton of typing by any
means.

Already the letter "T" and "S" are starting to wear off (peel off?)
of those keys... what the heck? Is this a thing with the iBooks? I
have typed a lot more on other keyboards (laptop and otherwise, all
Macs) without this happening.

Anything I could or should do about it? I'd rather not take a Sharpie
marker and write them in... but I also don't want all the other
letters/etc coming off! (I'm a decent typist, but I need to see
what's where sometimes... :-) )

Thanks,
Michelle & Herd

iBooks in general are more complicated than Powerbooks to disassemble.
That said, check out PBFixit.com, they may have a disassembly guide for
it.

Pulled mine apart a month after i bought it to put the BT inside i
had a hard time finding the parts but finally found most of them on
ebay, If i remember correctly there are 4 parts needed, the actual BT
board, the wire to connect the board, the antenna wire with antenna,
and the antenna board holder. As for pulling it apart and doing the
job wasn't very hard but i did have the manual to follow.

Hmm, not much of an argument...
I have a really bad habit of swapping my Macs, as some of you know,
and my wife is getting real pissed off with not knowing which Mac or
back-up disk has which document and so on, hence I am moving to
Macs that I will not sell, brand new ones.
To the point, I asked her what she would lika as "her" Mac and she
claims that she really doesn't care as long as it works and that it stays.
Oh, and as she's got taste (She's married to me...) she prefers OS X
over OS 9 or Windoze.
Right, in the past she's had a 12" iBook 800 who's screen (I do refer
to Macs as persons) was "too small", fine. However, when I had the
AlBook 12" a month later, she picked it up and said "is this my new
Mac then ?!"
Doh!!
It's now be a Mac mini with 17" TFT, period!!

Re: Slow iBook G4 1Ghz

2005-02-16 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
I have a huge PowerBooks collection: at least all form factor (1xx,
190, 520/540, 5300, 1400, 3400/3500, WS/lomb/Pizmo, Titan, Alum,
iBooks (clamsh., withe).

Well, I would like to bring my experience to this topic.
Wallstreet 15", BlueChip 500 MHz, 512 MB RAM
vs.
iBook G4 14", 933 MHz 384 MB RAM
vs.
PowerBook G4 15", 1,25 MHz, 1000 MB RAM
Well, to tell the truth the Aluminium is faster, but I notice this
only with processor and RAM demanding tasks.

In general use it is hard to find any difference: for instance my
wife cannot tell any difference and actually she is still complaining
for the purchase of the Aluminum (the only reason that she admits is
the nice shape and the necessity for my collection...).

Moreover she still find the Wallstreet with OS 9.2.2 the best thing.
Personally I use the iBook G4 90% of the time because it is sturdy
and the battery last longer than on the Aluminium. Only when I need
to work on huge (>5 MB) Word files or PDFs I switch to the Aluminium.

Then I have a G5 2 x 2 with 2.5 GB RAM: well this monster is really
faster than the three 'Book mentioned.

Let's go back to 1995-1996: PowerBook 1400/3400 were a big
improvement over the 5300ce, but by today's standard they are pretty
the same thing.

I guess that after you have driven a Porsche (never had one...)
probably you do not notice any difference between a 1999 1.5 L Jetta
or a 2005 Passat V8.

Ben

I too would really like to know about this. I recently acquired a
G4 800mhz iBook and immediately upgraded it to a gig of RAM and I
swear that it is slower at most tasks than my 400mhz Pismo, also
with a gig of RAM. I really expected a big difference in speed and
I just haven't seen it. Any ideas??

In my old WS changing to another app could take about 5 seconds at

Short answer NO.

Printers can be shared in X with all machines running X OR in 9 with all
machines running 9. You can't print to a shared OS 9 printer from an X
machine except via a "classic" application.

Trying to print from ibook g4 thru Airport Express to C80 on Mac Clone

2005-02-10 Thread iguy
I have recently acquired an ibook g4 running Panther, and an Airport Express
base station. The Express is connected to one port of an SMC Barricade 4
Port wired cable/dsl router, along with Mac Clones and an XP home PC. The
two Mac Clones, a PowerCenterPro 210 and a PowerCenter 150, are running Mac
OS 9.1 and 8.6 respectively. I cannot see the PowerCenters in the network
browser on the ibook, but I can connect to them via the TCP/IP option in the
Sharing Control Panel.

I would like to be able to print from the ibook to the Epson Stylus C80
printer I have, by the USB printer sharing control panel in the OS 9.1
system folder.

I cannot figure out how to make the Printer visible to the ibook. Can this
be done with 9.1 and 10.3.5? Is there something in the Airport Express
setup?

Any help would be really appreciated!!!

Cheers,
Kenji

I have seen outlets on run of the mill domestic American Airlines
flights, in coach...they just weren't in every row, they were kinda
under/between the seats, IIRC... I just remember having a laptop and

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
On all the international flights I have been on I have *never* seen a
power socket to plug up a laptop. Never. It has always made me wonder
if they really exist, I have just assumed that they are for the first
class. The flight is on a 747 on Quantis airlines. I have flown on
Quantis on a 747 and haven't seen a socket, either. Thus this monster
D-cell battery pack :) BTW, has anyone seen an Air socket on a flight
before? Because I would really like to know...

Well the laptop's power circuitry should protect against that. The
fuse on the batery pack is SOP to protect against short circuits.
Either a cable problem or something contacting the power connector.
Depending on the battery type you can have a very high short circuit
current which can burn out wiring, melt plastic casing, cause burns
againt skin and other problems.

I don't think it's going to matter. When the menu bar ICON switches
from Charged to On Battery you may have reached the point where the
external battery pack isn't helping. I say may because it might
still be providing some power to run the computer and the iBook's
battery is providing the rest, I don't know for sure, it depends on
the internal power circuitry. You could test it by monitoring the
current from the battery pack and reduce the voltage (use fewer and
fewer cells). When the "On Battery" ICON comes on if the pack is
still supplying significant current then it is helping.

I would at a minimum put a fuse right off the battery pack.
Have you checked into auto/air adapters (and if your flight has outlets).

One other thing to do is check the web site for the airline you are
flying on. Many planes now have electrical outlets available for people
with laptops. The airline's site should have info on what plane your
flight will be on, and details about the power jacks, if they exist.

That way all G4 support files will remain. You may have to add some apps
later.

I have done this successfully with G4 -> G5 towers.
If this is a brand new G4 iBook, it will ask if you want to copy over
your files and settings from the old one, if it supports firewire.

You may lack some apps, for example, dvd player is not installed if
there is no dvd drive.

Belts&suspenders method: CCC old system to new system, then do an
immediate Archive&Re-install of the system. That keeps all your old
data and installs a fresh system with everything your current hardware
supports.

ibook G4 Heating

2004-10-13 Thread Seb Payne
Hi All

I'm new to the G-Books list. I am having a strange problem with my iBook G4
(1GHz, 14" 2003 model). In the bottom left hand corner (I think the CPU is
here!), there is a sort of burn mark coming through. You have to look
directly at it with a lamp to see it but it is starting to concern me!

Any ideas and has anyone else experienced this?

If it's not perfect, you should definitely return it.

The hard drive is most likely a 60 GB...

Return refurb iBook G4 12" or not?

2004-08-16 Thread Allen Lambert
I just got my refurbed iBook G4 1 ghz from Apple on Friday, and I love
it. There's a slight problem with the screen in that the back left
corner is warped a bit inward by somewhere between 1/16 and 1/8 inch.
Everything appears so far to be fully functional, and in addition they
sent a much larger hard drive than the one I ordered - a "55 Gig" hard
drive as compared to a 30 gig (by the way, what would I call that 55
gig, a 60 gig, or a 50 gig?)

I'd like advice from the list if they would recommend returning the
ibook or not. I know ultimately my decision should be based on whether
I can live with it, and I think I can, but I'm wondering if the list
thinks this is a big enough issue to mess with.

Thanks!
Allen

2004-07-28 Thread Darkwolf45
I like the way you think.
While this IS a PC oriented campus, and I HAVE had troubles with profs who requires PC
only files there, there is at least one mac lab there, and there is at least one IT
person there that knows macs. The one guy I know personally should at the very least
be able to point me in the right direction to clear up any problems, so long as my
iBook is compatible with their network. From what everyone is telling me, however,
I'm thinking it shouldn't be much of a problem.
The Printers in question are both HP printers, each of them installed on at least one
mac, but I would definately like to consolidate the several computers printing needs
to one printer.

Yeah. I have to know all of that too. I'm NOT just a Mac admin. I
administer: Windows, Macs, Oracle databases, and three or four flavors
of Linux. I spend a LOT of time on Google ;-)

Like I said, I'm not a rocket scientist; this stuff isn't that hard.
And yeah... last time I copied Office file from a Mac (Office 2004) to
a PC (Office 2003), I had to redo half of the tables.

You shouldn't have had to do that. Most likely it's due to different
printers.

And yeah... even though Panther supposedly supports Windows printing,
one out of three printers in our office just won't show up in the list
and there seems to be no way to put it there.
Make sure they're all on the same workgroup; that's the usual cause for
SMB printers not showing up.

Also if you have a domain, you're going to have to get into the
authenticating against AD stuff on the Macs, which is doable. Easier in
Panther than it was in Jag, for sure.

Mac-Windows integration is still far from seamless.
I never said it was. I DID say it's not a deep deep mystery, like most
IT folks treat Macs.

Depends. What was the last Mac that you used as your main computer? How did
you connect (if at all) to the Internet?

You see, you have much more options now, network-wise, but there are
additional things to manage in order to use those options...

Keep inmind, i had hoped to put PCs and macs on this wireless network.
802.11b and G is 802.11B or G. Bits is Bits, they don't care what OS
the bits came from...

With the right adapter you can put a game console on that network.
You'll need to use your Mac to administer the base station, but
anything can be a client.

Next, The school i go to has a couple wireless hotspots, but is PC
oriented. What are the odds that I will be able to interface using
these hotspots and my iBook?
High. Nearly 100%.
It depends on how they're managing it, but the vast majority of
wireless networking stuff works just fine with the mac. The WEP key is
what Airport calls the 'Password'. Wireless is wireless is wireless.
They would have to go *way* out of their way to make it PC only.

If they require a VPN connection, probably all you need to know is the
name of the VPN type (PPTP or L2TP), VPN server, and a
username/password to use. Then use Internet Connect to set up the
connection.

If your profs demand PC versions of Office files, when you save them,
check the box in the file-save dialog to 'append file extension'.

They'll never know it came from a Mac.
Defensively learn Unix. Get the book " Learning Unix for Mac OSX
Panther" One, you'll learn a lot of cool and useful stuff. Two, you'll
be able to bullsh*t them by talking in terms of "My computer's running
Unix, what do I need to know to connect to the wireless..." They're
likely to presume you mean Linux, and give you the basic technical data
you need to do these connections.

It's sounds like you have the typical PC Weenie IT folks, who are too
stupid and lazy to learn anything, and so respond to anything beyond
their pitiful level of knowledge as 'not supported'.

Why is it that Mac IT folks are expected to know all the ins and outs

know..I manage to know this stuff, and while I'm smart, I'm certainly
no rocket scientist. I can only conclude that they're bone stupid, or
worse, remain deliberately ignorant.

Ignorance is a curable condition; willful ignorance is an incurable
character flaw.

I have a real desire to apply copious cluestick to people like that;
their job function is *support* the users, not dictate to them.

(why yes, that IS a head-shaped dent in the wall next to my desk...why

Ask them for written or web-based instructions for connecting via the

Burning CDs is built-in in OS X, from the Finder, so there is no need to
install additional software. DVD Player is also installed automatically if
you want to watch DVDs.

I would presume it was a replacement logic board - so unless they put the

Did you try calling the dealer or Apple directly? When they service an item
there is a warranty on them and I believe this would qualify as apotential
problem. Some software packages may rely on this information for serial
numbers. I suggest you to check with Apple.

That doesn't seem to have happened to this pismo - firmware was upgraded
about 2 years ago and the original serial number's still reported.

iBook G4 14" boot issue

2004-05-01 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
This brand new iBook G4 14" does not boot after a cold boot: it emits

I have to hit the ctrl + apple + power combination to restart it to
have it booting properly.

The hardware test says it is okay. I need it to finish my course at
the university (I teach at the vet school) so I will be able to send
back, in case it is an hardware problem), to Apple only at the end of
May.

Re: iBook G4 into a G3.

2004-04-17 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
Personally I believe that the larger size is related to the screen,
as the external connectors on both computers are on the same side
(left facing the computer) and actually occupy the same space.

modem - ethernet - FW - USB - USB - video -audio.

Thanks for the ironical replies ;-) but my question was serious!

Ben
