[Audyssey] Infocom Interpreters

2012-11-20 Thread Ibrahim Gucukoglu
Hi Everyone.

Just thought I’d make things easier for everyone looking for all the Infocom
interpreters we’ve discussed here. This zip file contains the entire contents
of the if-archive’s Infocom Interpreters folder, so while a lot of the files
here will probably not be relevant, all the interpreters discussed here
including Filfre and Winfrotz in all its flavours are included.

As an aside, I’m getting reports that some people are experiencing difficulties
downloading the file from my dropbox account, so those of you who have dropbox
or other file sharing capacity, please share with your friends the archive you
downloaded to reduce the strain a little.

All the best, interpreters link follows:

Re: [Audyssey] Infocom Archive - now on dropbox!

2012-11-20 Thread Ibrahim Gucukoglu

Hi Kimberly.

Well, since you dare to tread in our thread *smile*, why not take the
opportunity to grab my archive of Infocom goodies, they're text based games
which I'm sure both you and your little one will find engaging, challenging
not to mention educational and fun at the same time. I'm not going to make
health claims and benefits backed up by dubious science or anything LOLOL,
however reading, writing and thinking are all that is required to enjoy a
text adventure and they will help your son with these activities in a fun
and challenging way. There are a couple of junior level Infocom games which
might appeal, Seastalker and Wishbringer, plus the Zork games have massive
appeal right across the board with players young and old. I'll be on hand
to help get everything up and running and the best part of all, its all
completely free, not a penny cent required by me or anyone else.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi all...I have 2 requests...First, I am looking for XBox for my 7
year old son, and have NO idea what to look for as far as games or
accessories or even what price range I'm looking for...Since, y'all
seem to know so much about games, thought I'd ask you
first...Secondly, I am looking for games to play, for myself, on my
PC...I'm using JAWS and W7...Is there anything I can play which
doesn't require a lot of downloading of extras?...As some of you know,
I am one of the profoundly technologically challenged, so it would be
great to find games which are more easily installed and such...Thanks,
and feel free to email me privately if it's easier...Happy Thanks
Giving, and remember to eat way too much...(smile)

OK, it looks like I got it to work after all.

Ibrahim, are there interpreters that work well with JAWS under Windows 7?
Last I heard, there weren't any good ones, so I'm curious.

Thanks.

2012-11-20 Thread Ibrahim Gucukoglu

Hi Thomas.

If you would, that would be fantastic! I cant for love nor money get
anything out of the latest version of WinFrotz using JAWS 13 and Windows 7
64-bit, its completely inaccessible and the thought of using TTS voices
makes me cringe, I prefer to have complete flexibility when it comes to
reading. Filfre is a good interpreter but it does have its floors, namely
it wont play Z6 games and there is a bug the author is aware of which swipes
the screen when a game abruptly exits for instance when you win Infidel or
die in Suspended to name a couple.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi,

Agreed. I'm currently running Winfrotz on a Win 7 64-bit computer and
while the Sapi support is a bit patchy as you say its not bad. In
addition, if people would like a copy of Dosfrotz I might look into
building a 64-bit compatible version for Win 7 as I personally prefer
the Dosfrotz over Winfrotz anyway.

Cheers!

2012-11-20 Thread Johnny Tai
Hey guys; How do I, or what do I have to, set up in the computer itself so
it will record is when I'm gaming? I seem to be able to only record things
through the external microphone- for example, if I plug in a microphone, and
then put microphone by the speakers, then it will record the game sounds
coming out of the speakers- but there must be an easy way of doing this?
I'm running windows 7, jaws 13, if that's any help.
Please help!

Hi Dark,
The exploration cross always starts out on your tula, yes. Agreed that some
kind of HTML manual would be helpful, though I personally find the iPhone
version useful because it is split into separate sections. If you want to
contact the developer, they are indeed still excepting feedback. Their address
is b...@a-sharp.com. That's bugs with a z in place of the s.

Hi kimberly.

Playing if games is quite possible on a windows 7 machine, including the
infocom classics. you just need an interpreter such as winfrotz or filfre,
indeed I'd recommend winfrotz, and then open the files in that and read the
screen, it's really no more difficult than using a player like winamp to
play specific sorts of music files.

See the winfrotz and filfre pages on audiogames.net for more info.

Re: [Audyssey] KoDP updates

2012-11-20 Thread dark
Hi zack, good to know, i obviously missed those bits of the manual sinse
there is a lot of info to take in and as the pdf doesn't convert very well
I'm having to use the iphone version and thus can't do a propper search for
the info, indeed I would rather like an html manual so that I can have it on
my computer beside me I'm playing and could look stuff up more easily
(bloody pdfs).

does the map always start with the exploration cross on your tula once you
hit the explore button? if so that would be a very easy way to find stuff
and know where i was, or does it show the last area you explored.

If the devs were still interested in making changes to the game they could
also considder changing the name of the explore button that shows up when
you have setup your exploration and where to go to "send expedition" or
maybe just "setout" to stop people hitting the wrong button (as I did on one
occasion before I realized which one I needed).

Hi Dark,
The manual provides some insight on this topic, as it happens. Any less than
about seven goods or cows per sacrifice is seen as stingy, or at least
unlikely to work. Fourteen or larger is a safe minimum. Any less than 10 or
15 goods or cows in gift giving is also stingy.
As for exploration, I think that when you go to the map screen and hit the
explore button for the first time you end up near the northwestern part of
the map in most cases. You probably would have to scroll to see your
exploration cross. I believe your clan typically ends up in the central
southern area, although the precise position varies from game to game. Don't
under estimate the value of just exploring your tula either, which you can
do by not double-tapping another hex before sending the expedition off.
I hope this helps a little bit. I should also point out that the values for
gifts above are traditional, and under exceptional circumstances you might
have to give substantially more. in particular, tribe formation is a very
expensive prospect.

Hope this helps,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] XBox Games was Infocom Archive

2012-11-20 Thread dark

Hi kimberly.

I can't answer on the xbox issue, but with pc games it depends upon what you
like. if you go to www.audiogames.net, you can use the "search archive" to
search the database by genre or by license, so tthat you can say have listed
all the sports games or all the action games.

There is also the list at www.pcsgames.net, which provides a great overview
and many links, and the game pages on www.whitestick.co.uk, but if your
looking for specific types of games you might find the search archive on
audiogames. particularly usefull.

for compatibility, a lot of things run on windows 7, and many of those
that have issues can be fixed by installing jim kitchin's winkit program
from www.kitchinsinc.net which adds several older things missing from modern
windows that certain games need, though many have also been updated.

As to downloading and running games, well usually it's as simple as
downloading and installing them. you do this by downloading the application
file and then double clicking on it in windows explorer and following the
instructions (just remember where you put it).

when you've done this a couple of times you should be well used to it,
indeed playing games is a great way to improve with computers.

Any problems on specific games, please feel free to ask.

All the best,

Dark.

accessories or even what price range I'm looking for...Since, y'all
seem to know so much about games, thought I'd ask you
first...Secondly, I am looking for games to play, for myself, on my
PC...I'm using JAWS and W7...Is there anything I can play which
doesn't require a lot of downloading of extras?...As some of you know,
I am one of the profoundly technologically challenged, so it would be
great to find games which are more easily installed and such...Thanks,
and feel free to email me privately if it's easier...Happy Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] KoDP updates

2012-11-20 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Dark,
Glad to know things are improving a little bit. I'll answer your questions as
best I can, although some of them are easier to answer than others. :)
The thing to understand about exploration is that the map is large, large
enough to require scrolling to see it all. It is, more or less, three screens
by three in all directions. The way to usually handle it is to put your finger
on the screen and move it around slightly, you will find it easier to
contextualize things that way rather than flicking. You can travel over hexes
in a particular direction and get a sense of which way your people have yet to
go. Also realized that the map is filled in not only by your explorers, but by
your emissaries as well. So there may be a surprising amount of the map listed
as explored already, but you never actually visited with an expedition. That
doesn't mean it isn't worth visiting though…
As a final note, your exploration cross always starts on your tula, and it is
possible to find it on the map, just more trouble than it's worth sometimes. Do
you have the Pathfinder blessing? That can be very helpful.
Speaking of blessings and mysteries, you're correct that you keep sacrificing
to gain secrets for hero quests. You can also find them in events sometimes, or
as favors from other clans. Sacrifice is generally the most reliable way, and
besides… What else are you going to do in Dark season?
GOod luck,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] Infocom Archive - now on dropbox!

2012-11-20 Thread Ibrahim Gucukoglu

Hi.

There are a couple of choices. I personally use the Filfre interpreter
however that does have a major floor the author is currently aware of and
working on where in games that exit abruptly when completed or when you are
killed don't output their text to the screen, the interpreter simply asks
you to select a new story. Death in Suspended and winning Infidel are two
cases in point, though I'm sure I could find others. There is an excellent
if slightly dated port of Winfrotz by Rich Lawrence since the current
version is inaccessible at least to me using the latest version of JAWS.
Best thing to do is to write me directly, I could then point you in the
right direction depending on what OS you are using as there are console mode
options as well for the slightly technically minded or adventurous spirits
amongst you. Also if you want to play Arthur, Shogun, Zork Zero, Journey or
Beyond Zork, Filfre will not be an option as it doesn't support the
formatting of these games, you'll have to use a port of Winfrotz.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Lora,

I don't know about Jaws but you can always use Winfrotz with Sapi
turned on which works well enough with NVDA. Of course, NVDA works
well enough with Winfrotz without Sapi so maybe give Winfrotz a try.

Me, I'd love to see an audio version of Adventure. Tha was a simple game
but it was the forefather ofmost Action RPG's. And on higher difficulty
levels you had that darn bat to contend with as well as finding the keys,
sword and dragons.

I don't know the full history of bubble bobble, but I know it was the

Rainbow islands was probably my least favourite of the original games, but
parasol stars I had great fun with, particularly double player.

Indeed playing original bubble bobble now on the gba, a version which also

continue a saved game, I'm rather shocked at the uba difficulty of the

restart points I've got to about stage 70 (the game does have a hundred

[Audyssey] KoDP updates

2012-11-20 Thread dark
well things are improving slightly, I have a humacti on my
ring who is just
plane awsome! with renowned combat and lots of clout,
and he virtually
single handedly routed the trolls in a skirmish. thanks to a
couple of good
omens, and I even persuaded the herani to be friends.
I did however make a bit of a bodge with exploration and
sent an expedition
off into the wild blue yonder never return. I believethis
was because though
I thought I was exploring an unknown hex comparatively
close to the regions
I'd previously explored, it was actually off somewhere
else.
One real problem I have is though i can tell which hexe's
are explored and
which aren't, I can't find my own tula on the map at all,
and thus have no
idea how far or distant anywhere is, it's weerd actually, I
see lots of
other clans, but not mine! :D.
Of course I might have just missed mine on the map, sinse
there are a lot!
of hexes.
any suggestions? I've just been flicking through the hexes,
but obviously
that's not ts.
As to advisers, I'm really quite amused by their different
personalities. My
chief is a no nonsense sort of fellow, while my priestess of
the earth
goddess seems to want to chop up all men and make
them into furtilizer to
help the crops grow! actually she rather reminds me of a
feminist lecturer I
used to have, :d.
that's one thing I really like about the game, it doesn't feel!
like playing
resource management so much as managing actual
people.
I also have one more question about magic and blessings.
I get that sacrificing for mysteries lets you learn more
blessings and
sacrifice for them later, but how do you learn the
mysteries that help you
in the hero quests? or do you just need to keep sacrificing
for mysteries
until one of the gods decides to give you information?
despite all this though, I am really enjoying the game,
though I don't think
this will be a particularly auspicious clan, still hard games
can be
rewarding! :d.
I'm only sorry that I can't export my clan's sarga, sinse I
don't currently
have any E-mail accounts setup on my iphone. it's a
shame I can't save it
just as part of the game and then mail it later, or even just
have it in a
stats file on an internal game score board or something
similar the way
entombed holds past games.
I would almost! considder getting twitter just for Kodp
related things.

Ps: appologies if this is a repeate, I just got a message saying my original
was too long sinse I forgot to chop the rest of the conversation off, but I
think this was the one it meant.

Re: [Audyssey] light game query

2012-11-20 Thread dark

Hi tom.

Fair enough on the muffling issue, however my concern with a targiting beep
is that A, it'd make the game too easy, and b, it would simply mean people
just lined up a shot, and if they got no beep, got irritated, rather than
having to actually try and shoot mushrooms out of the millipeeds path, or
destroy long lines of shrooms as was in the original game, sinse keeping
your field of fire free and making sure the millipeeds didn't have too much
chance to hit shrooms and descend to get you formed quite a part of the
game.

I'd suggest myself if muffling wasn't possible, have a targiting blip for
mushrooms, say a short bong sound, and then a second for millipeeds, thus,
if a player centered a millipeed and there was a mushroom in the way, it
would be possible to shoot through it, plus players could spend time
destroying mushrooms, with volume or pitch changes on both sounds to
indicate whether things were close or distant from you.

then of course, there would need to be danger signals for when the peeds
got into your playing area and you had to avoid them, and of course for the
dreaded bounsing spider or shroom creating snale, (god I hated those
spiders), it would be quite possible though I think and make quite a
different audio game, particularly sinse the action in the middle was more
about precise shooting and strategically destroying those mushrooms when
they got in the way rather than just fast reactions, though dodging
those spiders or peeds when they got to the bottom could be fun!

Fair eough tom, and that is true about mota, but I would be concerned at
both people's opinions with a starwars game and your own knolidge of the
films, sinse I think you'd need to really stick to your guns on design in
that one (pun intended), though I admit with the original music and sfx

Hi Dark,

Yeah, that sounds like it. Basically, the game was suppose to look
like you were in a cockpit of an x-wing with tie fighters attacking
from the left, right, and straight ahead. You lined them up in your
crosshairs and blew them away. On the final level the Death Star would
appear and you had to line up the Death Star, fly inside it, and take
out the main reactor core.

While I take your point of a simple game concept morfing into
something much more complex as happened with MOTA I know I could
create a Star Wars game faithful to the original if I wanted to. It is
really a case of coming up with a simple design and sticking to it
which is something I didn't do with MOTA. Let's not forget with MOTA
there were certain pressures that wouldn't be the case here.

For example, from the moment I took over Montezuma's Revenge I was
under extreme pressure to produce a game as people had paid for it and
wanted their money's worth. A few began demanding this or that feature
even though it wasn't a part of the design and wanting to make a
better product I bent over backwards to attempt to meet those demands.
Before I knew it the situation had snowballed into something else
completely different. The problem was I didn't stand up to the people
and say this is how it is going to be and that's it.

If I write a game similar to Death Star Mission it would of course be
a free game. I'm under no obligations to listen to end user feedback
and I don't owe anyone a darned thing. If they don't like it they can
go jump in a lake. So if I wanted to write a simple arcade shoot-m-up
like the original that's how it would be. I merely pointed out the
realistic physics etc just to point out how the original idea might be
expanded upon were I interested in going the extra mile.

Cheers!

On 11/19/12, dark wrote:

you
having a cross hair to move around the screen and aim your lasers as lots
of

stuff came at you? we used to have that game on the amstrad computer and
it

was indeed cool.

Much as I'd love a realistic starwars game, the one problem with a
starwars

arcade game is that I could see it too easily turning into another mota,
that is a simple game concept which gets expanded way behond it's
simplicity.

For instance, you mention realistic x wing physics. Well knowing that you
have the tech manuals, just as with final conflict you would probably
want

the actual x wing stats in the game, which would mean also including the
actual tie fighter stats and size and shape of the deathstar trench as
well

as weaponry and action from the films themselves.

So already we have more complex physics than just an arcade game would
seem

to need.

then either yourself or the public might want to include more stuff in
the
game, like the other rebellian pilots fighting on your side, darth vader
in

his tie fighter, the death stars attack towers, a time limit before the
deathstar got to the moon of yavin etc.

so, while I love the idea of a starwars game, I think there is too much
to

include to make it affectively a simple arcade game like berzerk or
millipeed would be, which is what we were discussing.

I'd suggest personally if you were! going to make a starwars game go the
hole hog and do a full flight combat sim with realistic physics,
missionsk,

weaponry etc.

As to montizuma's revenge, there were two versions of the game I tried
from

retroremakes. one was a rather enhanced one with 3D graphics and great
music, but it had a very bad contrast and isommorphic perspective that
made

it a little hard for me to play.

the other was much more faithfull to the original I think, though
possibly
with more colours, and that is the version I meant, still, it'd be worth
a
try though i'll not be able to play it until next weekend when I'm back
at

my flat.

I'll have to check retroremakes and see what I can find out about the
different versions.

Millipeed would be interesting tom, maybe having the millipeeds make a
continuous sound as they zig zagged around from left to right getting
closer, which changed according to whether a shroom was in the way, say by
becoming muffled would work, or maybe having the shrooms represented by a
blip when you where lined up with them but leaving the millipeeds as a
pan, sinse if a millipeed did hit a mushroom it would start on the
next zig zag down so destroying the shrooms was to your advantage even
though it did take more shots.

Possible though with a little design work i think.

Bubble bobble was an odd game. I remember when we first got the amigar, we
played the first stage of rainbow islands, a game where two people shot
rainbows out of magic wands to defeat enemies, and instantly dismissed it as
cutesy but not much else (remember my brother and I were only 12 and 9
respectively).

then, a friend of mine who was a bubble boble fan played rainbow islands to
the first boss, and we got hooked, sinse the game design is just fantastic,
and the cuteness covers a really major difficulty curve, something I've
been able to confirm myself playing original bubble bobble.

i'm particularly sorry i can't get parasol stars for the gba, that was an

Re: [Audyssey] light game query

2012-11-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,,

Hmmm...Interesting ideas although I don't know about muffling the
millipedes when they are behind a mushroom. Only certain audio
libraries allow a developer to use a low pass filter to muffle sounds
which is a bit problematic for me. I've been working on an
experimental cross-platform engine that uses SDL for sound, input, and
networking and while it will get the job done it lacks some of the
more advanced features I'd get with DirectX. SDL Mixer, for exammple,
doesn't have all the DSP effects like low pass filters, echo, pitch
changes, etc which means if I want those effects I have to add those
effects directly to the wav file itself rather than apply them in real
time to the sound effect.

However, your suggestion of a targeting beep does work. If we had a
targeting beep it would beep when the millipede is visible, and not
beep if there was an obstruction in the way. I'd probably want to do
that anyway since while I can pan sounds with SDL Mixer its not as
precise as DirectSound's stereo panning. Meaning you'd probably want
some other indication that the millipede is lined up to make the shot.
No big deal, but a targeting beep kills two birds with the same stone
as they say. In short its a simple case of finding a way to make up
for what the API lacks by doing the same thing a different way.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] light game query

2012-11-20 Thread Thomas Ward

Cheers!

I remember when we first got the amigar, we
played the first stage of rainbow islands, a game where two people shot
rainbows out of magic wands to defeat enemies, and instantly dismissed it as
cutesy but not much else (remember my brother and I were only 12 and 9
respectively).

then, a friend of mine who was a bubble boble fan played rainbow islands to
the first boss, and we got hooked, sinse the game design is just fantastic,
and the cuteness covers a really major difficulty curve, something I've
been able to confirm myself playing original bubble bobble.

i'm particularly sorry i can't get parasol stars for the gba, that was an
awsome game! :D.

Hi ibrahim.

I'm afraid i'm having the same problem. I go to the page, and clicking on
either the file name or on download prompts me to sign in or create an
account on this skydrive thingy. Is there a way to download without creating
an account? i'm afraid I'm a little wary of creating an account on a
random service.

I would recommend personally using sendspace, www.sendspace.com sinse it's
very easy to upload and download from them and people can download quite
freely once they have the link to your files without creating an account
(sendspace is what I use myself for sharing files), plus if people already
have accounts they can use the sendspace wizard program which is very
accessible and serves as a great download and upload manager too. I've in
fact used them now for a few years and I'd highly recommend them.

others have used dropbox, i know less about that service, but I can
confirm downloading from them is fairly simple.

Either way, I would love to see your archive so I hope you can find a
workable way around.

all the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] light game query

2012-11-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

HmmmI don't believe I ever personally played Bubble Bobble
myself.Although, I saw others playing it at the arcade. Just never
seemed like a game that drew my attention enough to waste a few
quarters on it. :D

As for Millipede I suppose an audio version is possible, but I'd have
to think how to represent the screen in audio. The thing that made
that game challenging is that the millipedes could hide behind
mushrooms avoiding your shots so you had to fire between the mushrooms
just as the millipede showed itself or you missed the shot. Basically,
while it had the style of Space Invaders there were plenty of things
in the way to fowl up your shots which made Millipede a more
challenging game.

Cheers!

OK, for all you Interactive Fiction nerds and for those of you who mightn’t

I tried downloading your archive first with IE and then FireFox but was

The link didn't work.
It took me to a page where I would have to register with Microsoft for an
