I already tested it with the 2.4.20 Kernel but there it is the same probmem. I have the same problem with Distributions like SuSE. The graphic card in the Notebook is a GeForce 4 Go with 32 MB of RAM. If I plug a Monitor on the Notebook it shows a black screen too. I tried to change the picturefrequence and the driver from nv to nvidia but nothing helps. IMHO this is a problem with the nvidia-binaries. I have the same problem with my Geforce2 Go on my laptop with the actual driver version nvidia-kernel-1.0.4496-r3. I do not have the problem with any older driver like nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r3. So I emerge nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r3 with the appropriate nvidia-glx, removed nvidia from virtual/opengl and the world file. This answer is most likely the correct one. I am using 2.6 without framebuffer and cannot use (cannot see to be specific) the console after starting X until the machine is rebooted. Running 2.4 doesn't fix the problem. I will try this solution myself and report back if it succeeds. Have downgraded nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel to 4363 and everything is working again. A better way to keep the packages at that version is to modify /var/ cache/edb/world to from: media-video/nvidia-kernel media-video/nvidia-glx to: =media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r3 =media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.4363 Thank you for the hint. This is correct for normal world updates, but for deep world updates I have a dependency on virtual/opengl, so I have to edit the virtual file, either by changing to the exact version or just by deleting it. Maybe adding the version is somewhat cleaner, but when I want to try a new version, nvidia-glx is added automatically to world and virtuals. I need to edit these files only if it does not work. Thanks for your suggestion, I tried both the mev (with gpm) and xev (with X) programs but I don't see no event at all for the upper scroll button on my touchpad. I also forgot to mention that IMPS/2 does not work for me because when I try that and move the pointer to the right half of the screen the arrow is always returning to the bottom left corner and click events are triggered in a random-looking way making the mouse impossible to use. I guess this all means that the only use I can do of my touchpad is as a three button mouse... too bad! ciao ste Oggetto: Re: [gentoo-user] Re: scroll buttons on Acer laptop touchpad Da: Robert Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED] Data: Fri, 03 Oct 2003 19:35:37 -0600 A: [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Fri, 2003-10-03 at 09:45, Stefano Debenedetti wrote: Thanks for your answer, I had already tried that, would have been easy but unfortunately it doesn't work for me.. ciao ste Oggetto: Re: [gentoo-user] scroll buttons on Acer laptop touchpad Da: Robert Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED] Data: Thu, 02 Oct 2003 19:33:56 -0600 A: [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Thu, 2003-10-02 at 15:09, Stefano Debenedetti wrote: Hello, I have been googling quite a bit but I haven't found a way to enable the two additional buttons, the ones usually used for scrolling, like a mousewheel replacement, on my Acer Aspire 1312LC touchpad. I'm not sure on. 3. check your dmesg, does it say anything about ppp in it? (dmesg | grep ppp). Maybe you have it compiled into the kernel just fine, and it still has an entry in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.x, and its complaining about not finding the module because there isn't on. [gentoo-user] MAKEOPTS=-j2 unsafe?
Hey all. I finished setting up Gentoo on my new p4, and then I left it on its own for the day compiling kde and other useful things. When I came back it had frozen in what looked like some kind of deadloop. There were severall 'cc1' process all taking up 100% CPU and never finishing. What was creepy was that I couldn't kill them, even with a 'kill -9'. When I recompiled them with MAKEOPTS set to -j1 it seemed to work. Unfortunately the problem could be anywhere I'm running with hyperthreading enabled. Using makeopts=-j2. And using linux-2.6.0test6. The two packages it's happened to me on so far are libwww and gphoto2. Neither I would have suspected to cause problems since they're both small. It's particularly frustrating because the only way to get rid of the process was to reboot the machine! Does anyone have any idea what this is? Or any suggestions as to how I can narrow the cause down? [gentoo-user] Is LVM2 safe?
I've been reading about LVM, and it sounds simply awesome! I'm running 2.6.0 kernels, so to set it up I can use LVM2 and the support that's already built in to the kernel. So my question is: How safe is it, really? I'm only reading about it now but it sounds like it's actually been around for a while. Does this mean that it's safe and stable and usable? In short... if anyone here can tell me now why I *shouldn't* use LVM2 on my system, speak now or forever hold your peace :-) Anyone have any horror stories they can share to talk me out of it? 2 other related questions: (1) Anyone have their root partition on LVM with the 2.6 kernel? What's it like? what do you have to do to set it up? (2) If something were to go wrong, how could I get at my partitions from, say, another system? Would Knoppix or LiveCD (for example) enable me to mount my LVM partitions to do some kind of data-retrieval? Thanks for any info you can give me. My solution was to modify the keymap I was loading, and add the corresponding entries. When I type that I see the keycodes for all the Function keys. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

Re: [gentoo-user] autoconf re-re-re-recompile how many quicktimes do you need? openoffice won't compile
[snip] this will be about the 15th time i've had to compile autoconf. each time the above command asks that i install either v2.57a or 2.57-r1. i emerge one, and suddenly, i have to emerge the other and vice versa. what's going on here? The problem is that a couple of packages won't play nice together with 2.57a so they depend on versions lesser than that. But at the same time the latest version of autoconf is just that version and emerge will want to update it every time you have 2.57-r1 installed and do an update with emerge. I'm having the same problem and since no package currently depends on versions equal or above 2.57a I just masked it in /etc/portage/package.mask: =sys-devel/autoconf-2.57a libquicktime and openquicktime don't play nice together. i unmerged both and ran the above command and it said it needed to install both again. here's the qpkg -q output for each package: [snip] so what exactly do i need libquicktime for if it isn't depended on by anything? It's libquicktime that provides virtual/quicktime and thus libquicktime will be installed as soon any package depends on quicktime-support. See /etc/make.profile/virtuals for reference. lastly, open office won't compile with the gcc version i'm using (3.3.1-r1). it says i need gcc-3.2.x but then it says i shouldn't emerge a different gcc: There seems to be alot of people who's got problems compiling packages with gcc-3.3.1-r[12] so it's probably recommended to upgrade gcc to the latest version available and try compiling openoffice again afterwards. Or you could do as the ebuild says and downgrade gcc to a 3.2-version (which was what I did when I had problems with the 3.3-versions of gcc). The downgrade can be accomplished by pinning the gcc-version in /etc/portage/package.mask: =sys-devel/gcc-3.3_alpha1 Hope it helps. [gentoo-user] Using portage on an offline system
I have two machines sitting on a private network. One is connected to the internet, the other is not. There is no masq or NAT going on - the offline box picks up ntp time from the internet box (relayed) and is used as a dumb x terminal and for local working. It does have gentoo on it, but obviously rather out of date as I don't want to connect it to the net directly. It would be handy if it could use emerge, but I am rather at a loss as to how to get rsync or file grabbing working on it. The internet connected box has sshd running as it's only network (lan and wan) facing service, and I would rather not install squid etc. The non-internet box can log into the internet box via ssh with no passwords (public keys) but not the other way around. It's a moderately paranoid setup ;o) Any ideas as to how to get emerge working on this configuration? [gentoo-user] trouble with Kernel 2.6.0-test6
Hi, all! This might not be the apropriate place to ask questions related to non-gentoo-kernels, even more as the questions are about a testing kernel (2.6.0-test6). Yet, I hope that someone will be kind enough to answer my questions. After having heard so much positive stuff about the upcoming 2.6 Linux Kernel I decided to give it a try but soon I would run into some wierd problems that I havent been able to solve even after many hours of trying. The first one is that I cannot connect to my adsl-provider (german telekom) any longer, despite of all necessary modules being there and loaded (at least I think so). the ppp_generic, ppp_async, slhc, sis900 (my ethernet driver) are all available and roaring pinguin also compiles well and does not complain about lacking drivers ... but inspite of this I cannot connect to my ISP. There is another big problem. Under X I cannot start any terminal emulation software such as Xterm, Eterm or Konsole unless I am logged in as root. Xterm doesnt start at all, Eterm starts and exits immediately and konsole spits out following message before it exits: unable to open a suitable terminal device. This problem really p. me off since I have to leave X and switch to the virtual consoles everytime I want to type in a command and that is annoying. I guess there is something wrong with the pseudo terminals. Maybe the permissions are not set correctly. But if that was the case, why does it work under the gentoo-2.4.20-r5 kernel??? Is something wrong with devfs??? Thanx in advance. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

I have recently installed the development kernel 2.6.0-test6 and chose the same options (as far as it was applicabable) as under 2.4.20. However, when I boot with the new kernel I cannot connect to my isp allthough all the neccessary drivers are available and loaded on the system. On other mailinglists I have seen plenty of emails in which users complained about similar problems with the new 2.6.0 kernel but I wasn't able to find any solutions. I know that this is not an official release and many bugs may still be uncovered but I cannot imagine such a heavy bug to have remained unrecognized during development, so I assume this is only a question of configuration and tweaking.
