tested it with the 2.4.20 Kernel but there it is the same
probmem. I have the same problem with Distributions like
SuSE.
The graphic card in the Notebook is a GeForce 4 Go with 32
MB of RAM. If I plug a Monitor on the Notebook it shows a
black screen too. I tried to change the picturefrequence
and the driver from nv to nvidia but nothing helps.

IMHO this is a problem with the nvidia-binaries.
I have the same problem with my Geforce2 Go on my laptop with
the actual driver version nvidia-kernel-1.0.4496-r3. I do not
have the problem with any older driver like
   nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r3. So I emerge
   nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r3 with the appropriate nvidia-glx,
removed nvidia from virtual/opengl and the world file.

This answer is most likely the correct one. I am using 2.6
without framebuffer and cannot use (cannot see to be specific)
the console after starting X until the machine is rebooted.
Running 2.4 doesn't fix the problem. I will try this solution
myself and report back if it succeeds.

Have downgraded nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel to 4363 and
everything is working again. A better way to keep the packages at
that version is to modify /var/ cache/edb/world to from:

 media-video/nvidia-kernel
 media-video/nvidia-glx

 to:

 =media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4363-r3
 =media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.4363

Thank you for the hint. This is correct for normal world updates,
but for deep world updates I have a dependency on virtual/opengl,
so I have to edit the virtual file, either by changing to the exact
version or just by deleting it.
Maybe adding the version is somewhat cleaner, but when I want to try
a new version, nvidia-glx is added automatically to world and
virtuals. I need to edit these files only if it does not work.

[gentoo-user] Can't reach directory of Apache 2.0.47

Hi all!

I'm new to this list and hope someone can help me to solve this problem:

containing some .png's, from the internet.

Either the folder prova and files I put in have 777 permissions.

My machine (where Apache is installed) is connected to the internet by
modem, using PPPOE.
These are the only pieces of files I've changed trying to configure the
web server:

/etc/hostname : welcome

/etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 welcome.localhost welcome
(here above I also tried to put 192.168..)

/etc/apache2/conf/commonapache2.conf :

Here above I've tried to change almost everything without success.

I've also tried to change port 80 to 8000 and to another higher than

Can anybody help me?

2003-10-04 Thread Stefano Debenedetti
Thanks for your suggestion, I tried both the mev (with gpm) and xev (with X) programs
but I don't see no event at all for the upper scroll button on my touchpad.
I also forgot to mention that IMPS/2 does not work for me because when I try that and
move the pointer to the right half of the screen the arrow is always returning to the
bottom left corner and click events are triggered in a random-looking way making the
mouse impossible to use.
I guess this all means that the only use I can do of my touchpad is as a three button
mouse... too bad!

Any help really appreciated, thanks ciao

Use IMPS/2 for the protocol and add back in ZAxisMapping 4 5 just like
you would for a normal mouse and it should work.
At least it does on my HP laptop :)
Robert Morris

My only other suggestion would be to try the xev program to see what
button number XFree sees those buttons as. You may need to change the
number of mouse buttons in your XF86Config in order to detect them.
I know my Intellimouse was like that, if I set it for 7 buttons (to use
the side buttons) my scroll wheel would disappear. The scroll wheel
would only work if I set it to 5 buttons.

Read this message a little late, but what machine arch are you using? I've looked
through the replies, and haven't seen anything regarding machine arch. The first one
is a problem on SPARC, which is easily fixed.

Here is our solution to it (may or may not work on x86, I've never had a problem)

Add this to /etc/X11/XF86Config, in Section ServerLayout:

Option HandleSpecialKeys Always

2. I'm not sure on.

3. check your dmesg, does it say anything about ppp in it?
(dmesg | grep ppp). Maybe you have it compiled into the kernel just fine, and it
still has an entry in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.x, and its complaining about
not finding the module because there isn't on.
Just a guess.

[gentoo-user] MAKEOPTS=-j2 unsafe?

2003-10-04 Thread Tom Eastman
Hey all.

I finished setting up Gentoo on my new p4, and then I left it on its own for the
day compiling kde and other useful things.

When I came back it had frozen in what looked like some kind of deadloop. There
were severall 'cc1' process all taking up 100% CPU and never finishing. What
was creepy was that I couldn't kill them, even with a 'kill -9'.

When I recompiled them with MAKEOPTS set to -j1 it seemed to work.

Unfortunately the problem could be anywhere I'm running with hyperthreading
enabled. Using makeopts=-j2. And using linux-2.6.0test6.

The two packages it's happened to me on so far are libwww and gphoto2. Neither
I would have suspected to cause problems since they're both small.

It's particularly frustrating because the only way to get rid of the process
was to reboot the machine!

Does anyone have any idea what this is? Or any suggestions as to how I can
narrow the cause down?

Tom

[gentoo-user] Is LVM2 safe?

2003-10-04 Thread Tom Eastman

I've been reading about LVM, and it sounds simply awesome!

I'm running 2.6.0 kernels, so to set it up I can use LVM2 and the support that's
already built in to the kernel.

So my question is: How safe is it, really? I'm only reading about it now but
it sounds like it's actually been around for a while. Does this mean that it's
safe and stable and usable?

In short... if anyone here can tell me now why I *shouldn't* use LVM2 on my
system, speak now or forever hold your peace :-)

Anyone have any horror stories they can share to talk me out of it?

2 other related questions:

(1) Anyone have their root partition on LVM with the 2.6 kernel? What's it like?
what do you have to do to set it up?

(2) If something were to go wrong, how could I get at my partitions from, say,
another system? Would Knoppix or LiveCD (for example) enable me to mount my LVM
partitions to do some kind of data-retrieval?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Tom

[gentoo-user] No video with Gentoo Games CDs

2003-10-04 Thread Peter Hutnick
I have downloaded and burned both of the Gentoo Games CDs (America's Army
and Castle Wolfenstein).

Both boot okay, go through their startup stuff up to starting X. It says
something like Switching to ATI OpenGL interface and familiar X startup
stuff flashes on the screen for an instant. Then the screen goes black.
I can't toggle to a VT or anything.

The numlock key continues to toggle the numlock light, so I am pretty sure
it is a graphics issue.

I have a Radeon 8500, which is supposed to work with these CDs. /proc/pci
(under RH9) says:

Bus 1, device 0, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R200 QL
[Radeon 8500 LE] (rev 0).
  IRQ 11.
  Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=8.
  Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd000 [0xd7ff].
  I/O at 0x9800 [0x98ff].
  Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xdfef [0xdfef].

My questions are:

Is there a better place than this list to get help on this matter?
Is there a way to get a terminal so I can do some troubleshooting?
What troubleshooting is recommended?

Thanks!

This is one of the most unprofessional aspects of gentoo/linux-in-general. No

Spend about 15 minutes with the cdrecord manpage, then use that if you don't
like bloat. For super-dumb users, you could wrap this with a simple shell
script. Bloat is now not a problem. I find nothing especially daunting about

cdrecord -v -speed=? dev=0,0,0 -eject /path/to/what/to/burn

cdrecord -scanbus gives you the value for dev=

With a little more effort (not more than a day) you could use perltk or tkinter
(python) or even native tcl/tk (wish scripts) to code up a simple gui for the
above mentioned users that invokes cdrecord under the covers. Bloat also not a
problem here.

[gentoo-user] fetchmail question

2003-10-04 Thread William Hubbs
Hi all,

I have a question about running fetchmail.

I would like to run it as root, but I don't understand how to set that up. Here is
what i have currently:

My .fetchmailrc is set up like this:

set daemon 300

defaults
fetchall
mda /usr/bin/procmail -d %s

poll my.mail.server
protocol pop3
user isp.user
password isp.password

Since I want to run fetchmail as part of the boot sequence, I put the following in
/etc/conf.d/local.start:

su - localuser -c fetchmail

How would I convert this so that I can use the /etc/init.d/fetchmail
script to run fetchmail? In other words, what goes in /etc/fetchmailrc to make
fetchmail know which username on my linux box to deliver mail to?

Thanks,

William

[gentoo-user] autoconf re-re-re-recompile how many quicktimes do you need? openoffice won't compile

2003-10-04 Thread gabriel
$ emerge --pretend --update --deep world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

  Calculating world dependencies ...done!
  [ebuild U ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.57a [2.57-r1]
  [blocks B ] media-libs/libquicktime (virtual/quicktime from pkg
media-libs/openquicktime-1.0-r1)
  [ebuild N] media-libs/openquicktime-1.0-r1
  [ebuild U ] app-office/openoffice-1.1.0 [1.0.3-r1] -gnome +kde

there's 3 problems with the above:

this will be about the 15th time i've had to compile autoconf. each time the
above command asks that i install either v2.57a or 2.57-r1. i emerge one,
and suddenly, i have to emerge the other and vice versa. what's going on
here?

libquicktime and openquicktime don't play nice together. i unmerged both and
ran the above command and it said it needed to install both again. here's
the qpkg -q output for each package:

  $ qpkg -q libquicktime
  media-libs/libquicktime-0.9.2 *
  DEPENDED ON BY:
  media-libs/libquicktime-0.9.2_pre1
  DEPENDED ON BY:
  media-libs/libquicktime-0.9.2
  DEPENDED ON BY:

  $ qpkg -q openquicktime
  media-libs/openquicktime-1.0-r1
  DEPENDED ON BY:
  media-video/transcode-0.6.10
  media-libs/openquicktime-1.0
  DEPENDED ON BY:
  media-video/transcode-0.6.10

so what exactly do i need libquicktime for if it isn't depended on by
anything?

lastly, open office won't compile with the gcc version i'm using (3.3.1-r1).
it says i need gcc-3.2.x but then it says i shouldn't emerge a different gcc:

  # emerge openoffice
  Calculating dependencies ...done!
   emerge (1 of 1) app-office/openoffice-1.1.0 to /
*** Adjusting cvs-src permissions for portage user...
   md5 src_uri ;-) OOo_1.1.0_source.tar.bz2
   md5 src_uri ;-) gpc231.tar.Z
   md5 src_uri ;-) freetype-2.1.4.tar.bz2
   *
   * This build needs gcc-3.2.x, but due to profile
   * settings, it cannot DEPEND on it, so please merge it
   * manually:
   *
   *  #  ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-3.2.1.ebuild merge
   *
   * Please make sure that you use the latest availible revision of
   * gcc-3.2. Thus if there is already a gcc-3.2.1-r2 out, use this
   * rather than 3.2.1, etc.
   *
   * As of writing, gcc-3.2.3-r1 seemed to create the most stable builds.
   * Also, because OO is such a complex build, ONLY gcc-3.2.3-r1 will be
   * supported!
   *
   * This process is not highly recomended, as upgrading your compiler
   * without upgrading your distribution can be detrimental to your
   * installation of gentoo, unless you know what you're getting into
   *

  !!! ERROR: app-office/openoffice-1.1.0 failed.
  !!! Function pkg_setup, Line 114, Exitcode 0
  !!! (no error message)

any help with any of the above would be extremely helpful.

thanks

When you run

you should see the keycodes for the F1, F2, etc. keys (67, 68, etc.)
be mapped to something like
keycode 67 = F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1
If the XF86_Switch_VT_1 is not there, this may be a reason you are unable to
switch virtual consoles. I had this problem because I was using a dvorak
xmodmap
file, but it did not properly map the codes to the XF86_* keysyms. My solution
was to modify the keymap I was loading, and add the corresponding entries.

When I type that I see the keycodes for all the Function keys.

what happens if you press ctrl+alt+printscreen?
That should take you back to the last VT you were logged into.
Check to make sure you have the right driver for your
keyboard in your XF86Config.
Can you switch consoles BEFORE you start X?
If you can, the problem is in XF86Config

Nothing happens when I press ctrl+alt+printscreen
The driver appears to be correct for the keyboard, pc101,us
I cam switch consoles before starting X, yes.

Can you change to VT1? ctrl+ alt+ F1?n If so, but not to other
terminals X is starting before the VT's are spawned. Not sure how
  to check for that though

I can not change to any terminal once in X.

Typed that in and I was still unable to switch consoles in X

If that works, the problem is in your XF86Config. If not, I would
guess that your ctrl key is not working, perhaps remapped. Try the
shift key instead. Do the function keys work for their other uses
in X? (example: alt + F2 should bring up the run command dialog
and ctrl + F1-4 should change desktops in X) You can also log on
as root and start X can you switch VT's now?

Try logging in as root, still no change. CTRL+ALT+BS works.

One other possibility, other than a borked keyboard, is that some
keyboard toggle has been set. For a while, I couldn't use the
number pad regardless of the numlock LED status. It turned out
that the combination shift+ alt+ numlock is a toggle for mouse
events on the pad. There (may?) be a combination that toggles the
ability to use the VT's but I've had no luck finding
  documentation.

I do get this message when X starts: xkbcomp reports Type
Two-level has 2 levels but AE05 has three arguments.
I have not. The keyboard works fine in Windows 98, and worked fine in X,
up until a few weeks ago. The only thing that would have changed was an
update to X.

Have you tried a different keyboard? From an xterm do
$ ps af | grep tty.
You should see tty 2-6 running like so. Do you?
Yep I see all of them.

$ ps ax |grep tty
 2680 vc/2 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
 2681 vc/3 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux

 2684 vc/6 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

Re: [gentoo-user] autoconf re-re-re-recompile how many quicktimes do you need? openoffice won't compile

2003-10-04 Thread Patrick Börjesson
[snip]

time the above command asks that i install either v2.57a or 2.57-r1.
i emerge one, and suddenly, i have to emerge the other and vice versa.
  what's going on here?

The problem is that a couple of packages won't play nice together with
2.57a so they depend on versions lesser than that. But at the same time
the latest version of autoconf is just that version and emerge will want
to update it every time you have 2.57-r1 installed and do an update with
emerge.
I'm having the same problem and since no package currently depends on
versions equal or above 2.57a I just masked it in
/etc/portage/package.mask:
=sys-devel/autoconf-2.57a

libquicktime and openquicktime don't play nice together. i unmerged
both and ran the above command and it said it needed to install both
again. here's the qpkg -q output for each package:

[snip]

so what exactly do i need libquicktime for if it isn't depended on by
 anything?

It's libquicktime that provides virtual/quicktime and thus libquicktime
will be installed as soon any package depends on quicktime-support. See
/etc/make.profile/virtuals for reference.

lastly, open office won't compile with the gcc version i'm using
 (3.3.1-r1). it says i need gcc-3.2.x but then it says i shouldn't
 emerge a different gcc:

There seems to be alot of people who's got problems compiling packages
with gcc-3.3.1-r[12] so it's probably recommended to upgrade gcc to
the latest version available and try compiling openoffice again
afterwards. Or you could do as the ebuild says and downgrade gcc to a
3.2-version (which was what I did when I had problems with the
3.3-versions of gcc). The downgrade can be accomplished by pinning the
gcc-version in /etc/portage/package.mask:
=sys-devel/gcc-3.3_alpha1

Hope it helps.

[gentoo-user] Using portage on an offline system

2003-10-04 Thread Richard Revis
I have two machines sitting on a private network. One is connected to the
internet, the other is not. There is no masq or NAT going on - the offline
box picks up ntp time from the internet box (relayed) and is used as a
dumb x terminal and for local working.

It does have gentoo on it, but obviously rather out of date as I don't
want to connect it to the net directly. It would be handy if it could use
emerge, but I am rather at a loss as to how to get rsync or file grabbing
working on it.

The internet connected box has sshd running as it's only network (lan and
wan) facing service, and I would rather not install squid etc. The
non-internet box can log into the internet box via ssh with no passwords
(public keys) but not the other way around. It's a moderately paranoid
setup ;o)

Any ideas as to how to get emerge working on this configuration?

TIA.

[gentoo-user] trouble with Kernel 2.6.0-test6

2003-10-04 Thread momesana
Hi, all!
This might not be the apropriate place to ask questions related to
non-gentoo-kernels, even more as the questions are about a testing kernel
(2.6.0-test6). Yet, I hope that someone will be kind enough to answer my
questions.

After having heard so much positive stuff about the upcoming 2.6 Linux Kernel
I decided to give it a try but soon I would run into some wierd problems that
I havent been able to solve even after many hours of trying.

The first one is that I cannot connect to my adsl-provider (german telekom)
any longer, despite of all necessary modules being there and loaded (at least
I think so). the ppp_generic, ppp_async, slhc, sis900 (my ethernet driver)
are all available and roaring pinguin also compiles well and does not
complain about lacking drivers ... but inspite of this I cannot connect to my
ISP.

There is another big problem. Under X I cannot start any terminal emulation
software such as Xterm, Eterm or Konsole unless I am logged in as root. Xterm
doesnt start at all, Eterm starts and exits immediately and konsole spits out
following message before it exits: unable to open a suitable terminal
device. This problem really p. me off since I have to leave X and switch
to the virtual consoles everytime I want to type in a command and that is
annoying. I guess there is something wrong with the pseudo terminals. Maybe
the permissions are not set correctly. But if that was the case, why does it
work under the gentoo-2.4.20-r5 kernel??? Is something wrong with devfs???

Thanx in advance.

least I think so). the ppp_generic, ppp_async, slhc, sis900 (my ethernet
driver) are all available and roaring pinguin also compiles well and does
not complain about lacking drivers ... but inspite of this I cannot connect
 to my ISP.

I'm having the same problem with a rtl8139. Nothing reports errors and packets
go out, but the kernel won't seem to read from the interface correctly. Can't
help with a solution tho...

There is another big problem. Under X I cannot start any terminal emulation
software such as Xterm, Eterm or Konsole unless I am logged in as root.
Xterm doesnt start at all, Eterm starts and exits immediately and konsole
spits out following message before it exits: unable to open a suitable
terminal device. This problem really p. me off since I have to leave X
and switch to the virtual consoles everytime I want to type in a command
and that is annoying. I guess there is something wrong with the pseudo
terminals. Maybe the permissions are not set correctly. But if that was the
case, why does it work under the gentoo-2.4.20-r5 kernel??? Is something
 wrong with devfs???

Re-emerge the kernel and then read what it says at the end...

what happens if you press ctrl+alt+printscreen?
That should take you back to the last VT you were logged
into. Check to make sure you have the right driver for
  your keyboard in your XF86Config.

Not sure
how to check for that though

I can not change to any terminal once in X.

Another thing to try Open an xterm (konsole if you're
using KDE) and type:

setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc101 -layout us -option

Now try to change to a VT Can you?

Typed that in and I was still unable to switch consoles in X

If that works, the problem is in your XF86Config. If not, I
would guess that your ctrl key is not working, perhaps
remapped. Try the shift key instead. Do the function keys
work for their other uses in X? (example: alt + F2 should
bring up the run command dialog and ctrl + F1-4 should
change desktops in X) You can also log on as root and start
X can you switch VT's now?

Try logging in as root, still no change. CTRL+ALT+BS works.

One other possibility, other than a borked keyboard, is that
some keyboard toggle has been set. For a while, I couldn't
use the number pad regardless of the numlock LED status. It
turned out that the combination shift+ alt+ numlock is a
toggle for mouse events on the pad. There (may?) be a
combination that toggles the ability to use the VT's but I've
had no luck finding documentation.

I do get this message when X starts: xkbcomp reports Type
Two-level has 2 levels but AE05 has three arguments.

I have not. The keyboard works fine in Windows 98, and worked fine
in X, up until a few weeks ago. The only thing that would have
changed was an update to X.

Have you tried a different keyboard? From an xterm do
$ ps af | grep tty.

You should see tty 2-6 running like so. Do you?

Yep I see all of them.

 $ ps ax |grep tty
   2680 vc/2 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
   2681 vc/3 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
   2682 vc/4 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
   2683 vc/5 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
   2684 vc/6 S 0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux
   4521 pts/0R 0:00 grep tty

What happens when you hit the combination alt + F1?
What happens when you hit the combination alt + F2?

 Nothing.

Strange. In KDE, alt + F1 should open the start applications menu
and alt + F2 should open the Run Command dialog box.
Question: You do have 6 VT's before you start X?

Post the keyboard section of XF86Config

Thanks Brett. The list mail did in fact queue up. I received about 10
other posts from gentoo-users when my post came back. I had a feeling
that that would happen, but I so dislike when others send test
emails to lists ;-)

Re: [gentoo-user] trouble with Kernel 2.6.0-test6

2003-10-04 Thread momesana
first of all, thanks for your reply

Re-emerge the kernel and then read what it says at the end...

Its actually a vanilla-kernel that I obtained at kernel.org so I actually
didn't emerge it. After reading your email however I checked portage and found
a development-kernel (development-sources-2.6.0_beta6) that probably
corresponds tp the current vanilla development-kernel. I am emerging it right
now.

I see :-)
 * Please note that ptyfs support has been removed from devfs
 * in the later 2.5.x kernels, and you have to compile it in now,
 * or else you will get errors when trying to open a pty.
 * The option is File systems-Pseudo filesystems-/dev/pts
 * filesystem.

 * Also, note that you must compile in support for
 * input devices (Input device support-Input devices),
 * the virtual terminal (Character Devices-Virtual terminal),
 * vga_console (Graphics Support-Console...-VGA text console)
 * and the vt_console (Character Devices-Support for console...).
 * Otherwise, you will get the dreaded Uncompressing the Kernel
 * error.

... and it works. But the problem with the internetconnection is still
biting...

[gentoo-user] adsl doesn't under kernel 2.6.0-test6

2003-10-04 Thread momesana
I have recently installed the development kernel 2.6.0-test6 and chose the
same options (as far as it was applicabable) as under 2.4.20. However, when I
boot with the new kernel I cannot connect to my isp allthough all the
neccessary drivers are available and loaded on the system. On other
mailinglists I have seen plenty of emails in which users complained about
similar problems with the new 2.6.0 kernel but I wasn't able to find any
solutions. I know that this is not an official release and many bugs may
still be uncovered but I cannot imagine such a heavy bug to have remained
unrecognized during development, so I assume this is only a question of
configuration and tweaking.

Is there anyone with a solution to offer?

thanx in advance,
momesana.

Yeah, I'm not certain what to do with it, either. Actually, I've had many
problems with the test kernels since test3. test1 and test2 had a couple of
problems with -mm* but for the most part worked perfectly. Since test3, I
haven't been able to get acpi to work well at all and now this network
problem... Actually, try booting with pci=noacpi and then acpi=off. I didn't
get around to trying acpi=off but it usually fixes a lot of problems with the
test kernels.

I've been running from 2.6.0-test? kernels for several months now (on -test6)
currently with no problems similar to yours. I'm attaching my kernel config.
You can compare yours to mine, and maybe something will pop up. You can ignore
most of the netfilter stuff, if you don't have a firewall setup.

HTH.

I also have an rtl8139. I use APM instead of ACPI due to

USB also does not work with ACPI.
