I was wondering if anyone was still using the list. Hey Thane :) My recommendation would be all new everything and check your components once you have a running system. New cpu/mobo at least. Re: [H] Weird PC issue
I was getting that same error a while back. It was happening for about a month every day or two, and sometimes all through the day I'd have hard lockups. I stress tested the hardware and everything passed but I would notice long pauses at times that seemed to be related to accessing an older HDD. Turned out it was a failing seagate HDD, although that drive passed every test I ran on it. For the hell of it I copied all the data from the drive that seemed to be pausing too often, to another 4TB HDD and pulled the original HDD and haven't had a problem since. It seemed weird because the error is generic and doesn't point to any specific hardware issue. lopaka <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Fri, Oct 9, 2020 at 1:12 PM Bobby Heid wrote: > Hi, > > > > I have had some issues going on with my pc for several months now. > > > > There are two issues. > > 1. My belief is that occasionally the power would dip just enough to cause problems. The power supply that I pulled tested fine with the 2 testers I had but it was actually going bad. I also had a weird problem that was similar where another box would reboot or shut down. Tried swapping PS but still the same problem.. I had a 4TB secondary HDD that had some movies on it and when I would try to access them the speed seemed way too slow. I pulled the drive just as a test and all the problems stopped. The drive passed all tests but had some major pauses and slowdowns in access times during tests but always passed. lopaka On Wed, Aug 12, 2020 at 6:03 PM didymus7 wrote: > Did you try swapping out the power supply? > > On 8/12/2020 9:00 PM, _ Winterlight wrote: > > My Asus P9 X79WS with I7 has been giving me headaches for months. I've got a bunch of these dell "Angel" USB capture devices but it looks like they run on XP and Win 7 only. I tried hooking it up to win 10 but can't find any drivers that will allow it to work. Unless you find a really good deal for the service, for the VHS stuff you might be better off getting a RCA usb capture device and doing it yourself. I converted about 20 hrs of VHS videos about 10 years ago. Just capture the video to raw AVI if you have the HDD space then run through cleanup filters (I think I used tmpgenc and virtualdub filters to clean up the video and then recompress after). I agree that closed loop is the best way to go if using liquid cooling.. I'm using 3 closed loop cooling systems and they work well. Re: [H] Ubiquiti Networks Unifi 802.11ac Dual-Radio PRO Access Point (UAP-AC-PRO-US)
I doubt this is the problem but you could try switching wifi channels (auto may be the default but you can select which ones (1-9?) . If you have any other neighbors using overlapping channels this can cause connection problems. If you use a utility to check all nearby access points to see what channels they are using this would be easiest but I don't recall what software I was using to check this as it happened a while back. I've had problems before when neighbors started using access points that were defaulting to the same band mine was using and the interference would knock out about 80% of my wireless equipment. Either the equipment wouldn't connect at all or would be sporadic but I'd always have 1-2 devices that never had problems I've never had a problem with my Ubiquiti but I've only had it up and running a couple months now lopaka On Fri, Jul 13, 2018 at 2:23 PM, Winterlight wrote: > I have an expensive Ubiquiti Networks Unifi 802.11ac Dual-Radio PRO > Access Point (UAP-AC-PRO-US) > Six months into owning it I started having problems with N band devices. > It didn't take long before the only N band device that works is an old ACER > laptop with a Intel wifi N adaptor. Re: [H] Best Way to Start over with Win10
Steve, normally I'd do a clean system install. You may need to use a utility to find the actual product installation number but I know MS is making this harder to do so I can't say which utility to use. Once you get the base install and some updates downloaded, get all your necessary software loaded and then invest in a good drive cloning bay ($25-50) and make a copy of your OS on another drive that is the same size, same maker and same product line. Put it away in anti-static bag somewhere safe and only use it to restore your perfect OS if something goes sideways. I've done this for my primary boxes and my sons laptop and it has got us up and running in under 2 hrs after drive failure or having a windows update hose your system. lopaka On Mon, Dec 25, 2017 at 2:39 PM, Steve Tomporowski wrote: > Working further with my Win10 update problem, I put a bare drive on the > system and installed 1709 and it went perfectly (except for the constant > babbling of Cortana). Yes. Many of the graphics cards need all eight but some only need the six. Re: [H] EVGA
I'm glad I grabbed a 1080 for a good price about 6 mos ago. Great for gaming. Even the demand for 1060's has increased. I think it's getting so hard to find any mid range cards in stock anywhere that the ebayers are grabbing everything and marking it up hoping to capitalize on this trend. On a good note, etherium mining difficulty jumped a LOT this week making it less attractive. lopaka On Fri, Jul 21, 2017 at 8:47 PM, Greg Sevart wrote: > Well that blows. Re: [H] EVGA
Greg, the latest xmrminer for nvidia has increased mining performance of nvidia cards by 20+% for mining so the 1070's especially are in higher demand. It's puts them closer to AMD and the power draw is making nvidia cards look like a good option too now. For some reason the 1080's don't seem to perform as well as you'd expect but that could change. alt coin mining (not so much bitcoin, but etherium, monero, litecoin, etc) has destroyed the video card market driving prices waaay up. It you want any decent video card you need to get on nowinstock and set a browser alarm and hope you can get your order in before the cards disappear. Rx 580's go in about 15 seconds on newegg and amazon the past 3-4 weeks. Check ebay and you'll see all the shills reselling video cards for about 1.5 - 2x the market price. Re: [H] Help! Bino MSI Win10 Pro laptop random lockup issues
I've had a couple older laptops with heat issues (the P4 HP comes to mind) and the monitoring software (I use speedfan and cpu-z too) didn't always show much issue. Normally I have 2 ways I'd check if it was heat related. I have a couple mini fans made for laptops that have adjustable clamps to hold them over the small fan exhaust ports and a thin retractable usb plug to power them. On my old P4, if I ran that extra blower fan all the issues I normally had went away. The other would be to use one of those thin metal laptop stands that have a couple movable fans so you can adjust them for where the intake grates are on the laptop. lopaka On Thu, Jul 6, 2017 at 12:52 PM, Bino Gopal wrote: > So I see I don't have the Creator's Update as I'm still on the Anniversary > Update at: > > Version 1607 build 14393.1358 > > Hmm, maybe I should try and get another OEM power brick and start using it > and see if the problems go away... > > > Heat-wise what would you use to monitor lopaka? Re: [H] NAS
Most definitely, BUT right now I have eight 4TB drives in my unit and eventually will have eight 10TB drives in it. Once you get used to having it (NAS) you will keep accumulating movies, pictures and if you capture home videos possibly, you will eat that space up way quicker than you think. If you enjoy blu-ray videos and keep them stored on your unit like I do, we are talking 20-25 GB per movie and higher once the higher resolution standards are more common lopaka On Thu, Jun 29, 2017 at 10:33 AM, Winterlight wrote: > Can't you just get bigger drives? Most of the time I'm using dual monitors off my main PC but occasionally Ill switch so the second monitor is showing one of the other computers then I'll toggle the kbd/mouse over when I need to set something running. Re: [H] New Ryzen PC Build
Dang, how much ram would you normally be using without that limitation? I've noticed that some virtualbox VM's have issues on ryzen but others don't. Can't run any XP SP3 VMs but all my linux VM's seem to work fine. Hopefully next version of virtualbox fixes this. Not a biggie just something I noticed. I'm not gaming at the desk so this is more for work related projects, some video editing and conversion, and general multitasking. lopaka On Fri, Apr 28, 2017 at 8:01 AM, wrote: > I switched over from a 5820K to a Ryzen 1800. Re: [H] New Ryzen PC Build
The stock coolers pretty nice. If I can't get a good OC with that I was looking at a few larger AM4 heatsinks on amazon or considering a closed loop liquid cooler. My desk has pretty good airflow (4 front intake fans, 1 large rear radiator output with a fan on inside and one on outside also, and 2 smaller outtake fans) so I should have less issues but we'll see :) AM4 Noctua coolers are nice but pricey. There were a couple other brands (air cooling) that looked decent for $29-39 on amazon lopaka On Tue, Apr 18, 2017 at 8:03 AM, Jason Chue wrote: > Nice. Ryzen 1700 is the best pick. Most will run at 3.8 to 4.0 GHz and outperform a similar clocked i7 in everything but gaming. It's a great workhorse CPU for multitasking. Re: [H] Networks and motels...
No problem, I've been keeping this one to myself since there are so many open access points to be had using autoap. I cruised around the neighborhood today and was able to connect to 1 or 2 access points using a WRT54G router in the backseat running autoap about every block. Today I just used the router as is, but I have some really good omni antennas that extend the range to about 1/2 mile. Possible compatibility with the MB older system, ECS k7s5a. No blown caps on mb or in psu. I know there could still be bad ones though. The one thing I did not do is reinstall the Operating System after the upgrade, the computer actually booted up. I have used Diagnostics and it does not find anything wrong. Hmm...

Re: [H] DVD changer w/ DiVX support?
I'm looking foward to blu-ray burners since they already have a 200GB prototype blank in the works. What would be really sweet is a library device like the imation disc stakka, that also had the capacity to read the discs, hooked to the server box via usb (300 disc capacity at 200GB per disc) Now that would hold some serious collections :) I've had the Avel linkplayer2 for about a year now and I use it all the time. Until recently it's vob support was just mediocre because it would pause for a second between vobs when watching a movie. I recently ran across the wizd server software in a forum and it enabled smooth vob play and also streaming web audio. The only thing I'm still working on is streaming WMV that is running from an mms:// and asx format. I haven't got this working. You can surf your favorites online too, but only the text renders correctly so some pages look hideous ;) lopaka Wayne Johnson wrote: At 07:48 PM 6/11/2006, lopaka typed: You definitely won't get all the fringes and eye candy on the Avel like you could running meedio, etc., on a htpc. I hate you because I've been wanting one of them for a while but cash has been in short supply. I've been running a virtual CD/DVD driver on the HTPC then pulling the ISOs from anywhere on the LAN. This is a great help for many reasons but most of my ISOs are on my main machine then we play them & only if we like the flick do I burn it to a backup disk. I also don't have a burner on my HTPC so the ISOs stay on the machine with the burner in the computer room. So in summary I may not be capturing & playing back the captured files or playing DVDs thru the capture card but as far as the MyHD 120 is concerned I'm still playing DVDs. I can't wait for to get a HD DVD or BluRay DVD drive somewhere on the LAN so I can burn captured HD in it's original streaming mpeg [.ts] format to the hi capacity disks but I imagine the disks will be expensive at first. :-( --+-- Wayne D. Re: [H] DVD changer w/ DiVX support?
It's decent. I've got mine hooked up to a 52in Sony RPTV and it's picture quality is just a little under the HTPC since the computers got some postprocessing and purevideo running. Only con is that my TV squishes the output for 1024 and won't size it right. If your going to build a high end HTPC later though, I guess it may be better to go with the cheaper unit unless you'd have use for a network dvd player in another room. You definitely won't get all the fringes and eye candy on the Avel like you could running meedio, etc., on a htpc. Re: [H] X10
I don't actually have any x10 cameras but it sounds like a decent setup. You can setup web based interfaces for x10 devices to control them remotely, etc. Where will you be, at work? x10 stuff is cool for the reason that you can power things on and off as needed all over the house. I have 3 cameras at home, with 2 just simple nightvision capable webcams that I picked up for $9 each, and a decent nightvision wireless camera that I put wherever I need it. These are always running so I didn't need anything more expensive. I may pick up the x10 pan and tilt controller though, because I would like the option to look around as needed. lopaka Winterlight wrote: At 05:35 PM 4/25/2006, you wrote: Sure. I did notice that a goggle search brings up no complaints, which is encouraging. I am thinking about buying a three or four camera setup for a couple of hundred, and then 4 screen device, for a 100 bucks, which allows me to view up to four cameras on one computer screen, and turn any of them into web cams. I want to monitor my Dad who has Alzheimers. Any thoughts, or advice Iopaka?

Re: [H] Media Center box
The reason you would want a resonably fast CPU would be for video cleanup/postprocessing, especially if the output is to a HDTV. Most midrange video cards would be fine but the processor needs to be fast enough to handle divx and xvid, and to handle at least a little postprocessing. I have semprons running HTPC's in the other 2 rooms and they work fine for standard TV output (without any postprocessing). On a HDTV you almost have to clean up the video a little because you can see every little flaw. My HTPC (which I redid recently) is based on a dual opteron board with one 2 gig cpu. I have 3 TV capture cards including an ATI theater550, an WinTV PVR250 and a AverMedia A180. It has 1 gig of memory and just 1 HDD. Most of the captured video goes to NAS devices on the network. The opteron works better in a sense than the 3.2 gig P4 it replaced, because it can drop into lower power usage whenever the box is idle. However, the P4 could handle a lot more video postprocessing which did give a little better quality. lopaka Winterlight wrote: I am thinking about building a Media Center box one thing I am not clear on. MC is mostly a playback device,... correct? I know you can rip CDs, and encode video, on the fly for TV broadcast recording...that sort of thing. But it is primarily intended to be used to play back media...correct? If you are connecting them to a TV, then there is no monitor displaycorrect? The TV is the display? They are not intended to be used as a game center, or anything like that are they? I keep reading articles on how to build them, and they always seem to use pretty fast components, fast CPUs, video cards, 2GB of RAM, none of which is needed for a playback machine. Plus high end fast stuff is going to run hot and creating fan noise. I am planning on using a Semperon 64 3400, 1.5 GB of RAM, a basic large 72K GW drive, and a ATI AIW 9600 PRO none of which put out a lot of heat or noise Do I have the concept right here they are mostly playback devicesright?
[H] Server setup questions
I'm setting up a new server that will have mulitple functions including: -HTTP/ASP server -streaming video server -HTPC with multiple capture cards -caching HTTP proxy -mail & web antivirus proxy -home security (motion activated video capture) -Game Server (Quake 3 & 4) The question is, what would be the best way to set up the network connections given what the primary functions and priorities are? From most to least important; HTTP/ASP server highest priority Game servers second priority all others last priority The machine is an opteron (currently single 1.8 gig cpu on dual mobo) 1GB RAM 4GB Gigabyte I-RAM (solid state SATA for HTTP/ASP & caching HTTP proxy) 300 gig PATA HDD for local vid capture & OS, with terrabyte+ of NAS also available I can have up to 3 NICs so my question is, what is the best way to configure this box to separate incoming HTTP/ASP traffic and gaming traffic (WAN) from the LAN? Specific examples would be most helpful. lopaka
