Looks like we'll have to use a plugin in order to get a rotation like
HLDS used to. It just doesn't make sense to me though -- if a server's
sitting idle, chances are it's because of the map, and if no one's
joining because of the map it's on, then the damn map is never going to
 change.

Not only that, but if no one is playing, then why the need to conserve CPU?

Well I'm not positive, but I believe just like in CS 1.6, you can make
people spawn with guns in CS:S. Thus, there is no reason to have the guns on

VAC hasn't been updated for almost a year now
Cheating Death does not work
Even if VAC did work NO-STEAM completely bypasses any possibility of
VAC doing its job with infinite STEAM ID's available for a single
installation.

Demo's are probably the best except for the fact that the upload size
is pretty horriffic with 30 minute halves even when zipped and then
you have the whole performance issue problem when recording demo's,
although I dare say its probably the best option availble, although
also not entirely full proof.

A skilled player with a wallhack just looks like a skilled player who
is playing extremely well so long a they have practised hiding the
fact they are using a wallhack, and on certain maps, (nuke is a
classic) you wouldn't even know the difference many times even if they
did shoot through walls.

Hello dear readers of the hlds mailing list, dear VALVe Employees,

I just wanted to ask if anybody out there knows any anti-cheat tool
for Counter-Strike 1.6 which is usefully working at the moment.

As we all know, VAC is outdated since several months and CD has been
hacked lately. At the moment, there is no way of realizing a fair
competition regarding CS games. Both mainstream anti-cheat tools, VAC
and
CD are not worth a penny right now.

Some days ago, when things regarding this CD - Crack went public we
(the ESL, the biggest european online gaming league) decided to stop
all our Counter-Strike Ladders. And this is not something we like to
do very often. Read more here if interested:
  http://www.esl-europe.net/eu/news/9661/
  http://www.steambans.com/news.php?id=1267

Please dont get me wrong, i am not trying to sound important here. But
i have to reach as many people as i can to try to find some
information about other possible, not much-known alternatives to
prevent cheating. The situation regarding cheats today is even worse
than it was some months ago. And it wont get any better. If you know
any tool which might be useful at the moment, please report it to me.
You may even contact me directly if you can help in any way. We are
definately interested in any way of cooperation for anything that you
might provide that can help us all.
  Please dont let cheating prevail.

We run 4 CS 1.6 DeathMatch Servers and we can manage 4 of them on a
Dual 3.0GHz Xeon with 2GB of RAM but they are only 16 14 16 18
player servers respectively and when they are all full things do get a

Or try being logical and run 8 player servers.
The player satisfaction level is higher and you can run a lot more servers.

Ray Spaulding wrote:

Once again, you are wrong. You CAN increase the playerlimit of HL2MP. As I
said before, browse to hl2mp/cfg/valve.rc and open it with your favorite
text editor. Edit or add this line:
Maxplayers 20 (or whatever you want for the limit)
This will set the max for the server. You can put this limit in your
command
line or a limit lower if you wish but it will open the game to what you
want. The trick is if you DON'T edit/add this line to valve.rc then you
will
NOT be able to increase the player limit of the server. If you, for
example,
make a limit of 40 in valve.rc and add +maxplayers 40 in your commandline
then you will start the server at 40 players and they will join. Of course,
while you're watching your cpu meters bounce off the ceiling you could make
a couple new maps that would be fun at that insane limit. I ran 40's the
day
it came out on several of our dual xeon boxes and they seems to degrade
past
about 28 players or so. But at least I've crushed your illusion that the
limit is hardcoded into the server. And be sure to restart them every
24-48 hours as the FPS rates on them will die off over time. You'll see
that
for yourself I'm sure.
Happy hosting.

Each CDKey can only be used once, right?

Why not have a system like this:

* Since each steam account is already flagged with what games were
owned/purchased by the account (server side) - Since you can login from
anywhere and see your games list, have this information accessable by the
multiplayer servers

* When a client connects, it sends their steam id, the gameserver goes Hey
Steam master server, does steam_id12345 own CS Source?
If its a no, drop the client.

That way, they can make as many steam id's as they want, but never get back
in the game, because:
* The steam master server informs the joining client whether they own the
game or not

This way, non-steam would not work on official servers, because:
* They send their steam id, but the master server never recorded them
purchasing the game, so it drops them

Surely thats a viable solution?

 This is wrong.

You install STEAM, you don't need any game.
You make an account, with a free email.

You now have a valid STEAM account with a STEAMID already assigned to the
account (NO CDKEY NEEDED FOR A STEAMID), and then you go do the exploit to
get the games to display on your list.

 You don't need a CD-KEY at all.

AFAIK the STEAM Account Creation Process works like this

  You Install your game
You put your CD Key in
You create a STEAM Account which then attaches THAT CD Key to your
  STEAM_ID
You now have a legitamate STEAM Account which has several variables
  attached to it.
STEAM_ID, Username, Password, E-mail Address, Secret Question CD Key.

The only thing you need to now use that STEAM Account on ANY PC with
STEAM installed is your STEAM Account Login Password and you are
assigned the STEAM_ID that is attached to that STEAM Account Name
  Password.

The STEAM_ID that everybody see's on the Server should match that
persons STEAM Account Password and it should be a simple procedure
to query that STEAM Client for that particular Username and Password
once a person joins a server, and if the details don't match they
shouldn't have access, and one would think that a simple Valve server
side challange/response like this ought to stop people who don't have
legitamate rights to that STEAM_ID from playing online!

The process is only slightly differenent for games purchased directly
from STEAM, but still, at the time the Account is created, Valve still
gets your Account Name, Password, E-mail address Secret Question AND
then THEY (Valve) assigns you a STEAM_ID to that Account.

In both Cases, Valve has complete control over the assigning of
STEAM_ID's to Account Name/Password/E-mail address combinations.

I think Valve supports cheating. Why do I say this? Why is there an option
in the server software to disable anticheat? Its this that leads me to
believe that Valve endorses cheating. Why do they make the anticheat? Cause
if they didn't they would lose half of their customer base at least. So they
have to make it appear that they are doing something. Whens the last time
Valve updated VAC? I know I have turned in a few cheats to VAC that aren't
distributed that badly yet. But are there detections for it in VAC? No. The
cheats still work to this day. That was two months ago that I turned those
hacks in.

I think Valve needs to take a stand. Enforce VAC on all servers, lock down
the database, set up an authentication system like others on this list have
requested. To the guys who say oh I don't want VAC on my server, too bad,
you want the game, they made it, use the anticheat that's built into it or
don't use the software. I remember this thing in the EULA that stated you
could not modify the code, or hook it in any way shape or form, if you did
you had to destroy your copy of the software. If VAC were mandatory, this
same clause would apply. And if they locked the engine down better, cheats
would be a thing of the past.

I to would love some form of reply from Valve. Maybe I'll forward these
latest mails to each and every employee of Valve Software every day until
someone chooses to reply (Gotta love spam).

To get hl2mp run hldsupdatetool with hl2mp as the game parameter (i.e

size is around 300MB.

The update for Counter-Strike: Source is around a 200Mb download (this
is to make Counter-Strike: Source compatible with SRC Mods now the SDK
has been released). Most of this download size is shared with HL2MP
however.

The changes for this release are:
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch

Source Engine Updates
- HTTP and non-HTTP map auto downloading functionality
- Enhanced dedicated server logging capabilities
- Various tweaks and fixes

RE: [hlds] Ending ????

2004-11-20 Thread spartibus
You fail to realise that above all, it's a First Person Shooter. It's not a
RPG, where one of the main elements is story. Too much storry and not enough
shooting stuff with guns = bad. HL2 is the perfect balance, in my opinion.

I'd wait 10 more years for a HL3. Valve has proven that these things can't
be rushed, and by taking their time they have made (in my eyes) the best
game.

I hope they plan to release sequels in the next year or so.
I wont wait 5 more years for HL3 to get some idea of what's really going on
here.

And if the cliffhanger holds out too long w/o giving any more story behind
the story it will be lame and no one will waist any more time with it.

British television does that sort of thing best.

Unlike American TV they write out an entire outline of all episodes and when
it's done ... It's done.
Tell the story and move on to another one.

HL2 was a great adventure but I don't really know anything more of the G-man
or benefactors or any damn thing.

Valve has to give more in each episode if they want to do a multi part
story.
Lets flesh out the characters a lil more and open up the story.
Each episode needs to give more out on each character and develop the story.

Video games these days are really interactive movies. Valve needs more plot,
dialog, motivation etc ... Like a real film.

Game Companies that realize this and get a good director and good actors and
good script will win.
This cliff hanger is just like the last one. We end up with the G-man
muttering a few hard to understand phrases and we get frozen again.

Quite honestly I would recommend Valve re-write the ending and update it
with Steam.

I dont think there is any confirmation that Alyx dies in any explosion. In
fact, she doesn't die at the end of the game, time is stopped when the game
ends. An assumption that she dies pretty much goes against basic premise of
the arc from HL to HL2... think about the fact that Gordon doesn't age, yet
it is 10 yrs later... when gordon and alyx teleport, a week has gone by
People are traveling through trans-dimensional portals And the G-man can
stop time.

I think its a safe assumption that a character as well liked and pivotal as
Alyx is kept alive.

other than that, yeah you could say it is a bit of a cliffhanger.
Tie up the story, and who's gonna buy HL3?

I have that problem as well. I tried to take some screenshots for a friend
at 2048x1536, but it just showed up black (in both the tga's and jpeg's). I
believe, well at least for me, anything above 1280x1024 will show up black

Hi all.
Been while for this question and I feel like a noob asking it.

I know when CS 1.6 was out for AWHILE and you wanted to play it on LAN, you
needed the lan crack/file (Yes-I already emailed Erik one time advising).
Well, I know that no longer works.

How can you play CS 1.6 on a LAN without Internet access now?
I know about in the server.cfg to change the sv_lan

But is there a certain server DL for LAN only?

Also I verified about LAN licensing and its ok if everyone owns the CD Key.

Thank you kindly.

You guys are right, the 40-50% increase is running full 64bit support, its
20-30% increase running 32bit. Windows 64bit is being optimized so much its
insaine. I'm running a full production Active Directory enviornment off one
4proc Opteron system. I have another for redundancy sake, but they are
running the 64bit os, not 32bit. And I can say that they destroy an 8 proc
P3 Xeon that I had hands down without even blinking. I'm purchasing AMD
stock thats for sure and it would make since that they produce an amd 64bit
version of the HLDS server for the windows OS to take advantage of the
computing horsepower if they have not already done so.

Mike,

Thanks. We get a free unlimited connection and rack space for testing
winOS beta. Also, the hardware only gets upgraded once every 2.5
years. I do understand that emulation is bad, and for now, the money
for the short term 64bit hardware would be wasted. With that in mind,
I'm still looking for somebody that may have also beta tested win64
either with opteron or athlon64 processors. And if there was a
preferred value configuration.

I will let you know how poorly it turns out.

might like to ban their ID's as well. Though it is pretty much impossible
to tell the difference between someone that got a new account for HL2 so
they didn't lose their old cd key and someone who's using the steam exploit,
it's better to keep them off the servers in any way possible.

Since these are malicious attacks against your server, you could try some
legal movements on the people if you have some spare time =)

the last exploit (malformed rcon command that would hang the server

console you can see all of the players drop via timing out, all at

Of course something should be posted to this list, as a warning and to
get people talking. I omitted the details, however. It was someone
else who spilled the beans.

The first thing I did was email valve.

In my opinion, however, it's a weekend, and this isn't gonna get fixed
right away no matter what.

Lol, banned world wide.
At least some of the attacks have been done from people on this list.
Trying the vulnerability out etc. Gonna ban yourselves are ya?
Im sure you yourself have probably tried it at least once. I tried it on
a server and didnÂ’t know it had just crashed me or the whole server so I
did it again with a friend also connected to the same server. I did it
on my own server but I bet quite a few of you did it on publics.

Realistically, Yes there is a problem and im sure valve will fix it as
soon as they can. In the mean time posting more and more about it on
this list and other forums just informs more and more people how to do
it. This problem should never have been highlighted on these lists as
the more people that know about it the more people will try it. Email
valve. DonÂ’t publish new exploits on here, Just basic information to
warn server admins that there is an exploit out there.

For example. A new exploit has been found that crashes the server.
Something to do with a players name.

I realise that this isnÂ’t ideal but its better than the whole world
knowing how to take servers down.

Wall hacks for example. The more people that know about it the more
people will use it. SO DONÂ’T POST HOW TO DO IT. If you moderate a forum
with this information on. DELETE IT.

Also be nice if valce could setup an email address for exploits to be
sent to so that its not made so public.

There was a very sensible post on here a few days ago about the wall
hack. No information was posted on how to use it but just that it was
there and to watch out for it.

Just my opinions

Once again assuming that just because I post to this list from home, that I
must be running my dedicated server from there as well. I'm not, but even if
I were, it wouldn't make your post any less stupid.

I had enough of Valves incompetence and lack of concern for it's most loyal
players that pay money for a server so they can make money off of us.

Ahahaha. And this is the best part. When's the last time you've seen any
game company say, Yessa, Massa! and change something instantly, when
barely anyone complains about it, and actually seems to be working just the
way it should be? Valve's certainly not perfect. But then again, who is?

And for the last time, home based servers are MORE than adequate (in most
cases). Just because you decided to use a sizeable amount of money to have
someone run a server for you, doesn't make you any better than the next guy,
and you certainly don't deserve any special treatment.

RE: [hlds] Where has all the traffic gone?

2004-09-10 Thread spartibus
The point is that with the old method, the servers wich are good for me
might be listed only after a few thousand 300+ ping servers, and people
will bail out listing before the whole list loads.

I don't understand why nobody seems to use the favorites list? I've
always downloaded the entire list, added all the ones I pinged under 60
to my favorites, and just used my favorites as a list to play off of.

After the initial adding of servers to the favorites list, it generally
takes about 2 seconds to refresh and 3 seconds after that to find a
server to play on, instead of going to the MSL and redownloading tones
of irrelevant servers just to find 1 to play on.

Erm well you and your friends must be wired to the Valve office or

Every single person I speak to has incorrect pings in the master server

correctly
which must mean there is NO problem with us, but a problem with the list

His server has a very good ping to me, around 24 or so.
I can only guess, as most of us on the list can only do.

Client communicates with Master list Server
Gets List (XML Stream?)
Parses List and starts at Clients IP address +1 and -1 of first octet
List is displayed by default or preferred sort order as each server is
connected to and verified, measuring ping and polling for number of
players
etc...

Spartibus say's:
I'm guessing that the 10,000 servers that didn't show either time-out or
are
above 2000 ping to you, thus they aren't displayed in the steam server
browser.

I have 2 very good connections (3Mb dual T1's and a 1.5/768 ADSL (good
for
me!)) and I get the same results on both. I doubt it's a time out... I
am
getting the same results as Shane.

Funny, that's exactly what I wanted to know. So I searched every file
in
the
 Steam directory and nothing.
Near as I can tell it is stored in Windows Virtual Memory. You can
observer
this by watching the amount of virtual memory used go up as you
refresh
the
list, and stop if you stop refreshing (Open Windows Task Manager in
XP, in
view menu select columns, then check the Virtual Memory Size
checkbox).
This
could also just be the extra memory needed by the application to sort
and
display the list, but I don't think so. If you exit Steam it frees up
the
memory (obviously). Upon restarting Steam it will download a new list
when
you open the Server browser to the Internet Tab. The full list will
always
take up approximately the same size of virtual Memory.

I didn't get to spend too much time on this, as I was supposed to be
working. :) It just piqued my curiosity. I had to know.

Does anyone know if/where/how to rip the list of game servers provided
by
the STEAM client? I get 19,000 or so out of the 28,099 that w00t.net
pulls
from the master server tables. I want to parse the data and figure
out
which servers are NOT being displayed.

My 19,000 is with ALL filters removed.

RE: [hlds] HLDS - On Topic

2004-08-30 Thread spartibus
That's what I was saying (or at least trying to, lol, never was good
with english). w00t.net displays all servers from the list, where as the
steam browser doesn't show any server that's higher than 2000 ping to
the user.

But as someone else stated, he was able to add someone's server to his
favorites that he wasn't able to see on the MSL (and have good ping), so
I guess I'm wrong for the most part.

It's not ping. I run w00t.net and I see every server and have ping
reports
for them. I guess I'll just try to eyeball a few and find some.

I'm guessing that the 10,000 servers that didn't show either time-out
or
are above 2000 ping to you, thus they aren't displayed in the steam
 server browser.

I could be very wrong, but I know that's the case for at least a few
servers, if not ten thousand of them :D

Funny, that's exactly what I wanted to know. So I searched every
file
 in
 the
  Steam directory and nothing.
Near as I can tell it is stored in Windows Virtual Memory. You can
 observer
this by watching the amount of virtual memory used go up as you
 refresh
 the
list, and stop if you stop refreshing (Open Windows Task Manager in
 XP, in
view menu select columns, then check the Virtual Memory Size
 checkbox).
 This
could also just be the extra memory needed by the application to
sort
 and
display the list, but I don't think so. If you exit Steam it frees
up
 the
memory (obviously). Upon restarting Steam it will download a new
list
 when
you open the Server browser to the Internet Tab. The full list will
 always
take up approximately the same size of virtual Memory.

I didn't get to spend too much time on this, as I was supposed to be
working. :) It just piqued my curiosity. I had to know.

Does anyone know if/where/how to rip the list of game servers
provided

 pulls
from the master server tables. I want to parse the data and figure
 out
which servers are NOT being displayed.

My 19,000 is with ALL filters removed.

ALL this new list does is gives you BAD servers and a splitered
community.
Follow me here for a second, NOBODY waits for a full list.
First servers that show up for me are home made servers near my house,
sure its low ping but they lag like crazy, so new list brings lower
quality servers, THEN if you notice there are harldy any FULL servers,
most are half full because of this new system.

Valve is splintering the CS community by this new system. I'd rather
have FULL servers to play in than servers that are half full.

Lets face it, those of us who can get the good IP's have highend
equipment and 100meg connections and great peering, making for better
game play.

I really think Valve should reconsider the new serverlist system.

Does anyone here agree with me?

RE: [hlds] Not seeing CALIF servers

2004-08-29 Thread spartibus
Well considering anyone I know and even people I don't know, they
generally have something called a FAVORITES LIST. Rarely do they like
playing on random servers (for the obvious reasons). Common sense tells
me a lot of people would wait for a full server list, make a favorites
list of low ping or 'different' servers, and be good for a long, long
time.

Either way, it's instantly sorted by ping automatically, so I don't
understand why having the cable/dsl servers shown first makes any
difference. People are going to wait for the right map, the right ping,
and the right player slots.

Too many people making this such a huge deal when it's nothing.

Requesting a new IP won't help you since it's different for almost
everybody. It depends on the client's first IP octet.

This is an OK solution that Valve has done. Since it takes out all
that
bullshit with trying to get good IP addresses.

RE: [hlds] VAC Update?

2004-08-18 Thread Spartibus
It's people like yourself taking it to the extreme.

Since there's no admin there, what do you do? Leave. Blatant hackers
aren't there to be better than anyone else. They're there to annoy and
destroy any pub game that's happening. You actually staying in the
server and displaying your hate fuels this person to continue cheating
on the server.

There's more than one server out there. I understand it's a place you
enjoy playing at, but you have to use common sense and just find a
different place to play for the time being.

---

On to the other point someone made. VAC isn't the end-all tool. You
actually have to take matters into your own hands, instead of being lazy
and rely on something to do every single thing for you. If you can't
handle dealing with cheaters, don't admin a server.

A lot of people fail to realize just how lucky we are to have a tool
like VAC. Even though it's not updated as much as some of us may have
wished (at least currently, I think some major changes will be made once
Valve finishes its current projects), be happy to have this instead of
nothing at all (or horrible, half-assed third party tools)

I have thus far refused to participate in the everyone hacks thread,
but
last nights CS experience has left me so freakin mad that I need to vent
somewhere!

I play only on a few servers, all West Coast. We definately have been
visited time to time by super-good players, and very infrequently by
someone with very questionable skills. Most of the servers are regulars
so
we know everyone who plays there and the regs usually pressure the hacks
away pretty quickly.

Last night I jump on for a few rounds before bed. Headshot, headshot,
headshot, headshot - my whole freakin team dead, and all this within
about 2
seconds of round start. A player named knife was using every hack
imaginable: speed, aimbot, wall, everything! Typically when someone is
this
blatant, everyone will vote him off fairly quickly. Last night the regs
were
the minority and no one on the other team would vote against this guy.
This
totally pissed me off. I was cussing everyone out, and eventually
started
taunting the other players because they wouldn't vote against him. I
really
didn't get it. This guy would kill everyone on my team within 1-2
seconds
and no one on his team would kill anyone. They wouldn't even get a shot
off - how the heck can that be fun for anyone? But they wouldn't vote
him
off! One of my favorite servers ruined by a freak hack and loser
opponents
who obviously liked standing around doing nothing. wow.

So there's my vent / rant / etc.

Hopefully, VAC will continue to improve and somehow, somewhere, servers
will
become a better place to play.

Hey Mike, you want to start, I don't know, bringing some data with ya

after this saying that like me, they don't cheat, will you be quiet
then?

And while you're at it... You may or may not have noticed this, but this
isn't a forum, it's a listsrv, and adding a one line response on top of
about 22K of misquoted and mangled crap is about the most useless thing
a learned admin could do. There are people who get the digest of the
list and when you make posts like you did it completely destroys any
sense of continuity and needlessly bloats the digests. Not to mention
there are people on the list who have metered usage, so downloading all
these over-quoted responses does them no favors either.

You're using Outlook, so take a look at the great program Outlook
Quotefix at http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/outlook-quotefix/.
It'll automatically do things like strip out signatures and listsrv
footers (assuming they're properly delineated by --), put a sensible
quote header in, word wrap stuff, and move your cursor beneath quoted
material automatically. All you need to do is pick out the stuff you
don't want quoted and delete it, a task that takes about 5 seconds.

The crap will really hit the fan when HL2 comes out and we pay an arm
and a leg, only to find that we got hit with a false ban or for some
reason need a new key/steamID. Go pay $60 for another copy simply is
not an acceptable answer. I hope that Valve comes up with some way to
address these issues, otherwise the next thing you know there will be a
huge class action lawsuit against them in behalf of all of the people
who had stolen keys, false bans, etc.

Actually false bans aren't really a problem in my opinion. Last time my
friend was falsely banned he contacted valve through the steam website
and they determined that he was indeed falsely banned, and removed it.

And as far as I can remember, any mass false-banning that happened was
always reversed, without any work of the clients being done.

RE: [hlds] VAC Update?

2004-08-17 Thread Spartibus
When I want to play I go thru 5 servers before I find one w/o Blatant
hackers.

That's complete BS. I pub at least once a day, and NEVER (and I mean
EVER, not even in 1.3) did I go into more than 2 pubs in succession that
had blatant cheaters in them.

Your assumptions are BS as well. 3/4 of the entire CS population,
cheaters? It's FAR, FAR less than that. You are exaggerating pretty much
everything you say.

The only possible way I can see you going into 5 servers and having a
**BLATANT** hacker in every one of them is if you join ONLY insecure
servers. Why? Because insecure servers basically allow any and every
cheat to work (and at full potential), period.

You probably don't know this because you've never used cheats before,
but VAC SEVERELY limits what cheats can do. I've used cheats before
(hah), and let me tell you the difference.

Insecure Servers: You can practically see people from spawn to spawn
(wallhack), people are always on screen.

Secure Servers: A lot of times the only time you see someone behind a
wall is if you see them out in the open first, and then go behind the
wall. Other times you have to rely on them making noise or moving a lot
in order to be seen behind the wall. Also, you usually can't see them
from that far away, and the cheats are limited hugely by this (obviously
it's still an insanely huge advantage, though).

VAC has more purposes than just catching people cheating, it serves as a
wallhack block as well.

Have you somehow forgotten the HUGE projects being worked on right now,
especially as they near the release? VAC is FAR more useful than you
think.

A while ago VAC was updated something crazy like 9 times in one week, or
at least near there. SO many people got banned during that period, it
wasn't even funny. When Valve finally releases all of their major
projects, this is how regularly I think we'll see VAC being updated.

Subject: [hlds] VAC Update?

[ Converted text/html to text/plain ]
Is VAC going to get updated anytime soon?

If it is being updated, can it be announced on this list?

Can VAC / Valve allow Cheating Death to be compatible and let server
administrators decide themselves if they want to hassel of supporting
3rd
part fucntionality or not? Its not like Cheating Death bans anybody, at
worst it denys people access to your server which is not a major issue
in
most cases.

I do not know about the rest of you, but it seems on our VAC Enabled
servers
any average idiot can join and look like a professional CS player with
the
latest and greatest aimbots, whcih are extremely difficult to pick up
even
when viewing the demo in slow motion, if the aimbot is properly
configured,
which seems to be most of the time these days.

I got an evga geforce 6800 from newegg.com. They have this cool program
that lets you upgrade within 90 days if you outgrow it that quickly,
which I did. A 6800 gt is now on it's way.

Subject: [hlds] New Video Card For HL2?

 Hey All

I know this isn't a server question, so feel free to flame me till
your heart's content. But I'm considering buying a new video card to
be able to better play HL2. My current system is a AMD Athalon XP
2000 with a gig of ram and a Nvidia GeForce 4 graphics card.

I tried Doom3 (which i heard has similar system requirements to those
of HL2) on the lowest settings and it barfed. So I'm thinking in
getting a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128) to be able to better enjoy newer
 video games.

My question is, is just upgrading the video card going to be enough to
let me play HL2? Perhaps someone from Valve could comment.

And yes, I've read the system requirements. PIII 800 mhz DX6
Compatible. But Doom3 said it would run just fine on a lower end
system as well and it just died.

 Any Info?

 Thanks.

realize those messages only appear on the console. Is there a way to see

I finally decided that resistance is futile, and I'm TRYING to convert
to
Steam.

Just last night I converted my client box to Steam with very little
trouble
(so I thought). I played TFC for about an hour. In that time I only
crashed
once...very nice. Now suddenly tonight, when I double-click Team
Fortress
Classic in the games window, I get this:

Preparing to play Team Fortress Classic, then a popup window with
this:

SteamStartup(0xf,0x62f9d8) failed with error 108:
The local Steam Service is not running.

It would be nice if someone, someday, came up with a USEFUL error
message.
Why the f*ck was the local Steam Service running LAST NIGHT, and it's
just
decided that it doesn't feel like running all of a sudden???

Also, after installing Steam on my server box (Windows NT), and running
HLDSUpdateTool with the -create option, I get the following:

The procedure entry point GetLongPathNameA could not be located in the
dynamic link library kernal32.dll

Well I had a feeling that Steam was an absolute piece of sh*t, and it
certainly didn't disappoint me. Valve will die soon if they're banking
on
this crap.

Pretty goddamn sad, nice job guys.

But no map tells me that he doesn't have a -map mapname on the startup

RE: [hlds] VAC something wrong.

2004-07-22 Thread spartibus
Yatta yatta yatta.

To stay on the original topic...

Tonnes of people are getting banned falsey (read: false-positive
detections), whoever started this thread, all you need to do is contact
valve through the www.steampowered.com site, and they will look into
your issue. If you did in fact get banned falsely, they will remove it.

About 3 of my friends were recently banned, and as far as I'm aware, at
least one of them got it fixed, while the other 2 are two lazy to do
anything about it.

Now to go off-topic: Last I remember, VAC only detects RUNNING cheats,
so just having them on your computer does nothing.

Also, why even bother trying to glorify the word hacker or even debate
what it stands for? I swear, the only people that actually do argue what
it is aren't even hackers themselves. And not only that, but it's a
pointless argument anyways.

Also, I think (not sure) I read that even though CS:Source is shipping

with hlstats running on mysql. Aside from the forums (which get very
few hits), that's all the server is doing.

Yes, I know it's grossly overpowered, but hey, I like to blow money.

I'd like to ask for your recommendations for anything I can do to
truly
optimize the end-user experience. With keeping in mind that if I run
at
99% CPU, full memory usage, etc, I'm ok with that.

Specifically, settings regarding sys_ticrate, fps, rate, etc.
Anything
I can do to improve registration, reduce choke, whatever.

 Thanks in advance,

 Mike

RE: [hlds] is WON being switch off end of this month ?

2004-07-13 Thread spartibus
1.5 has already been recompiled or whatever to run under steam. This
requires no work what so ever from valves part... what this means is you
can actually see a server list on the steam browser and continue to
play. I think basically the main problem is there will be no more VAC
for it, that's all.

Game spy and others rely on WON ... Just wave goodbye to 1.5 ... It's
gone.
The HLDS.exe for CS 1.5 and other mods only talks to WON and that is
where
Game spy gets the listing.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] CS 1.5 servers will
still
work without WON they just wont be protected from what I have seen and
just
wont be able to use the in game search tool to find the servers. But
there
is GameSpy and HLSW that should still be able to link players with
servers
for 1.5 or 1.3 or beta. Go Have a look See.

then set something up in its place to allow CS 1.5 to continue

unofficial WON servers or keeping 1.5 running?

It really depends on what we can do with HL2 and whether or not the

Most of the issues with lag are a direct result of three native
functions
changing/being removed. If you run amx mod or amxmodx on your servers
disable it. These 3 native functions being gone are causing parts of
these
 modifications to loop endlessly.

Thats bullshit. amxmod have to hook these functions, to call it. When
the
parameters were changed, then it cant be hooked. If it cant
be hooked, then it cant be used by amxmod. There is no endless loop,
because the lag spikes are not endless.
Also clean servers have the same problem, so dont spread your
nonsense.

Yeah, I think it needs to be thought of now along the lines of being a
Gameplay variation now more than a mod... like how HLDM, DMC, Ricochet
(lol) are different types of gameplay... or like how Onslaught,
Assault, CTF, DM are gameplay types for UT2k4.

I think most people would consider a mod to be development work that
originated with the SDK, ouside of the Valve realm. Now that Valve owns
it and offers it, it becomes a gameplay variation.

I wouldn't think CS Source should be referred to as HL2 multiplayer, if
there is going to be an HL2 DM... seems more logical that the
multiplayer gampeplay of the SP game, should be referred as that

w/e... semantics.

I know when we host a new server we use publics for a ~ week

usually the primary concern its CPU load.
Also unless HL2 comes with coop there wont be a server
market until a multiplayer mod gets released.

So, if an HL2DS is not released before the client, then, logically,
day
one there really won't be a standard rate it sounds like. It will be
intersting to see what kind of rates come out immediately, how widely
varying they will be, and how long it takes them to taper back into to
be comparable. Wow, this will be like watching a mini economy or a
niche market evolve in real-time. How exciting.

People didn't reply most likely because they don't have/used 64bit
systems, and therefore can't help you. They also didn't leave a Sorry,
can't help ya because that's basically useless, and some of the more
hardcore people would think of it as spam and then shit a brick and
talk about the old days when no one used to do that and how that's the
reason most of the veterans have left the list.

Basically, if no one replies, they honestly just don't have the answer,
cause I saw your post, and it was definitely polite and what not.
Everything on this list gets read by most people, so don't worry about

Does anyone know how many hl servers a 64 bit system can handle or is
there a
base line spec on cpu usage per server?

and since i am new to game servers BUT not servers themselveshow
does one
go about running multiple servers thru steam?...Is the a different
interface
such as a DOS shell or do i need a special version of HLDS to run
multiplesso far from what i can tell from running unreal servers our
server should be able to handle about 50-60 32 man hl servers...but i
still
have no info on how to do this...

lets all try and be nice and answer Questions for other members...if
were not
gonna help each other we may as well goto a AOL chat and gab like the
rest of
the world.

thanx for reading or Ignoring this post

Look at the archives, That is why this list has gone downhill, that
is why a good bunch of regulars who were here way before us have
left in disgust as they saw what this list has since turned into!

See, because anytime someone asks a simple question around here,
there are a certain bunch who rather flame or have pissing contests
instead of answering the question when they can very easily ignore
the post if they've nothing creative or informative to add.

You are new here but take notice to an ongoing trend!

These one sided people are the ones who are usually the first to
reply calling you wrong just because you don't do something they're
way or to they're liking as if they are something so much better
 than the next.
 (watch the egos fly)

 I asked a question and although I should've clarified myself a whole
lot better I got attacked simply because I don't run my server
 someone else's way!

There are some great help still here that will answer your post in a
decent manner whether or not they like what's written such as Kevin
O Mogely / Rob / Erik, Eric, Alfred / heck even spartibus ;) / etc..

Don't let it discourage you and just be ready because you too will
 one day voice your opinion!

 Regards

RE: [hlds] OT: X-Spectate : Any thoughts?

2004-05-27 Thread spartibus
Sharza, the problem is most cheats DE-ACTIVATE themselves right before
the screenshot is taken, and re-activate themselves immediately after
the screen is taken. And what's worse, is that this is so instant that
you can't even notice it, literally. And practically every major cheat
has this. That's why things like X-Spectate are useless.

A tool that forced people to record for 2 minutes, wouldn't show
anything that you can't see spectating, either. I guess that would be
useful if you weren't at the server at that particular time, but
ultimately you can just use HLTV.

Hacks don't show up on screenshots. End of story.

Punkbuster is worthless, in the fact that you can download a program
that
tricks pbuster into thinking its running.
It would only be usefull if built into the engine itself, as adminmod is
not directly running on the
the client machine and could not get a screen shot of the client
machines videomemory.

Cheats themselves does not show up that's correct, but not end of story.
Because if someone is
wallhacking, you would be able to see that from a direct screen dump, as
you would see what the
cheater sees, thus the transparent walls and the tracers and the glowing
enemies for some cheats
would obviously blow him wide open.

Next thing is that many cheats, ogc for instance brags about being so
easy to use and hell, most of
the cheaters screen is full of on-screen menus, thus once again blowing
the cheaters cover.

Some cheats of course will be able to disguise themselves, but once
again, many times this will rely
on the technical skills of the cheater him/herself to install and
configure such a cheat correctly,
and mostly its poor souls with a burning need to be better than others
and able to own who cheats.

So the end of the story would be, that even though it doesn't reveal any
cheater, a lot of cheaters
could be spotted immediately, even for instance a 2 minute background
demo recording with
transparent walls as an opposite for the x-spec thing and uploading it
to the server in compressed
format or similar for the admin to spectate and see what happens.

Another thing is that I seem to notice that the amount of cheaters using
especially aimbot and wh's
is rising again, is other noticing the same thing, eventually before
they were almost completely
gone after vac was updated rapidly, but seems to be returning and not
being caught.

Is there any way to report a cheater's steamed with attached demo's in
order to get their license
deactivated from steam enabled servers?

L8r,
  Sharza

Good god, it's about time someone brought this up. PiTaGoRaS is
absolutely right.

This has been discussed so many times... and always the same conclusion:
a
client side cheat could easily detect when the screenshot is being taken
and
deactivate for a while every sign of cheating visible on the screen.

The program has good intentions, noone can argue that, but I do
 forsee VAC
flagging this as a cheat pretty darn soon, and I ain't too sure
 about the
EULA agreement being broken when using this program. The site
 reckons it
would be considered a false ban if VAC decided to ban you, but
 again, I'm
 not too convinced.

The only thing we ever needs, is an admin command implemented into
the half-life engine, to grab a client screen shot, like the old in-
eye style. That way, none of this will ever be needed, it can be
decided within a few seconds wether a player is using wallhack or
 other client side cheats.

Btw seems like VAC is falling behind nowadays, even though it have
been updated rapidly, I have banned 8 players from the clan server
in the past week, tell me is there any way of sending a demo and a
steam_id to get a VAC ban issued on those players?

RE: [hlds] Possible Admin Function

2004-05-24 Thread spartibus
You can do that as a normal player, it's called team speccing. Join a
team, but don't pick a skin, and you'll be able to watch players and
move around as a spectator, IF you don't have the vgui menus turned ON.
It has to be turned off (setinfo _vgui_menus 0)

Not sure if this is exactly how you wanted it, but this is currently the
only way I know how.

Hi, I was wondering if it is/would be possible, as admin, to join a
team, get killed but not respawn? This would be a great way to spectate
possible cheaters but without having to join the spectator group. All
too often I find that as soon as I join spectator, the suspicious player
seems to have a bad run.. hmmm

Cheers

Translated from Heise.de:

One week ago the arrested presumed Phatbot Entwicker Axel G.
respectively
Ago was obviously working at full capacity with the programming of the
Trojaners. It time for various activities remained, about break-downs in
stranger of systems. After searches of heise on-line Ago was
considerably
involved in the spectacular source code theft of the PC play Halflife 2.
Indications for its co-operation are even in publicly accessible Chatlog
files.

In September 2003 the code in the InterNet, geklaute by servers of the
US-American Halflife manufacturer valve, had been published. Valve does
not
have the long expected play until today into the sales to give . When
indicated reason for the fact that the SOURCE code did not only betray
the
most important bases and software techniques, but also an inadvertent
knowledge jump provided for Cheatern, which want to provide advantages
opposite other players in such Multiplayer Games. After information of
heise
on-line numbered US-American determination authorities the developed
damage
on more than 100 million US dollar.

Valve must want to keep this under wraps, however I do not. It's good
news.
