I had to get my receipt out. BestBuy. 79.99 with a $20 rebate. Final price
$59.99. So, I spend the $20 I saved on the svea forums, and in fact I may do
exactly this because I have about $40 floating around in my eBay account.

Try moving you computer outside you firewall and do the query again. I
had this issue and it was caused by the firewall not handling the UDP
traffic flow.

What happens is home type appliance fire walls have session buffers
only about 2.5k (depends on vendor) in size. This means they can hold
around 208 sessions at one time. Though UDP is a stateless protocol
firewalls attempt to give it state by tracking outbound UDP packets Dest
IP,Dest Port,Source Port, and a time stamp. When a reply to an outbound
packet arrives the firewall allows the packet to pass if it has a
matching entry in the session buffer.

When you transmit 19,000+ UDP packets to different computers to get
status info the session buffer quickly fills and the oldest session gets
dropped before the reply comes back.

The in game browser never gets a response from the computer and then
does not display the computer in the browser list. Based on the tests I
did for CS, World, no other filters you would see 3000-4000 computers
out of 19000+.

Have you tried moving the computer outside the firewall and making sure
a personal firewall is not running on the computer? If your computer
never appears in the master list it could be a server side config issue.
If your server appears and disappears from the master list then it could
be a master list issue.

Then again your server seems to be down more than up, I still can not
connect or ping the box.

I do not believe that Steams server list is very stable at

Your server does not appear to be in the master list,
 however I am
also unable to connect to or ping the server at all.
 Since you are
running it on a cable modem you might try the following:

   - Launch the server outside your firewall to test if it is a
   firewall config issue.

   - Be careful of DHCP changing your IP address while the
 server is
   running.

   - In the console look for the message, Adding master server
   ipaddress and check for errors.

Well the router you are using has a firewall embedded in it. It depends
how much space the manufacture allows for session management and the
speed you have told Steam your line is (higher speeds mean more UDP
packets and a larger session buffer). If you are also running servers
behind the same unit it will compound the issue and could easily make
the problem appear more intermittent.

As for recommendations I can say I have not found any of the low end
appliances you buy at Best Buy to work well. The main design criteria of
those products are price and web surfing.

Try searching the web for firewall appliance but be prepared to pay
from $250 to $1000 to get a worth while configuration. There are some
good ones that run embedded linux.

Your server does not appear to be in the master list, however I am also
unable to connect to or ping the server at all. Since you are running it
on a cable modem you might try the following:

- Launch the server outside your firewall to test if it is a firewall
config issue.

- Be careful of DHCP changing your IP address while the server is
running.

- In the console look for the message, Adding master server
ipaddress and check for errors.

Well, i saw your first connection, then i shut it off, becuase i had
to switch HDD. DHCP has never been a problem. Ive had the same
internal IP for ages, even if i shut my computer off. Ill check for
that error next time I start.

2004-09-21 Thread Megatron
This topic is getting hard to follow. Here goes.
I have three servers up all the time. They appear and disappear regularly
from the master list. I sometimes check using ServerSpy.
http://www.serverspy.net/
They just disappeared again. They were there earlier today. Funny thing,
There are people playing on it right now?
I read a post in the ServerSpy forums that said The steam public master
server is still unstable and it has a habbit of not listing all available
servers.
Two of the servers are dedicated and have their own IP with no firewall.
The other one is behind a firewall and is loaded with bots.
Again, there are no changes to the servers and they appear and disappear.

I've long since given trying to figure out why servers are not on Steam's
list. They come, they go, they come, they go. I do not believe that Steams
server list is very stable at this time, and I think someone else recently
suggested that also.
Point of some interest. At this time, Steam shows me that there are 3880 CS
servers. I have no filters set. WTF?

Once again assuming that just because I post to this list from home, that I
must be running my dedicated server from there as well. I'm not, but even if
I were, it wouldn't make your post any less stupid.

I had enough of Valves incompetence and lack of concern for it's most loyal
players that pay money for a server so they can make money off of us.

Ahahaha. And this is the best part. When's the last time you've seen any
game company say, Yessa, Massa! and change something instantly, when
barely anyone complains about it, and actually seems to be working just the
way it should be? Valve's certainly not perfect. But then again, who is?

And for the last time, home based servers are MORE than adequate (in most
cases). Just because you decided to use a sizeable amount of money to have
someone run a server for you, doesn't make you any better than the next guy,
and you certainly don't deserve any special treatment.

Just throwing ideas around here guys so excuse my naivety if my ideas

- why not use qstat to create a small server browser application and
then have all the users on this list advertise it in their motd. I mean
ase is great and all but if we just stuck to the hl1 packet queries im
sure we could create something small and quick to use.

- another idea is to create a web page data base where people can reg
there server. View servers by game type or region, that kind of thing
and have all the admins on this list advertise that?

I might even be able to arrange decent hosting for either of these
ideas.

I know this would actually mean working together but hey I've seen other

Good idea but not gonna make much of a difference. If people actually used
third party browsers like Gamespy and All Seeing Eye, this wouldn't be an

It's Steam's ingame browser that's broken.

http://www.w00t.net - browse servers, up to date on your initial search
within 4 minutes, get live details on the server once you find / narrow
down what you want.

Browse by server name (soon IP being added), player name, map, and find
stats.

If you all think it's warranted, I can add a reg server function so
that you can register your server so that if our master query is not
finding your server, it'll be permanently added.

then have all the users on this list advertise it in their motd. I mean
ase is great and all but if we just stuck to the hl1 packet queries im
sure we could create something small and quick to use.

- another idea is to create a web page data base where people can reg
there server. View servers by game type or region, that kind of thing
and have all the admins on this list advertise that?

I might even be able to arrange decent hosting for either of these
ideas.

I know this would actually mean working together but hey I've seen other
communities do it and we the admins for the most popular TEAM game in
the world.

lol 100+ posts because the 10 people that THINK this affects
 them makes 10+ posts each.

Oh no, my server doesn't get any traffic anymore, so it must
be Valve's fault! Oh and look how many people are
complaining! A total of 11 people! My gosh, that's the entire
community! Valve, why wont you speak to us? Why wont you do
what no huge company has ever really done before? Even though
you continue to update a game that's like 5 years old, that's
 not enough!

Honestly, there's still 130,000 people playing at peak times,
so obviously there's nothing wrong here. Your server appears
 to CERTAIN (as in, not
everybody) people later than sooner on the MSL. So why are
 you angry again?
Why do you people think you deserve to be shown on the list
 before other people? You don't.

Well, instead of just whining about it with no conclusive proof of
anything, I demonstrate how apparently I have nothing to do at
 midnight..

This excel spread sheet found at http://www.phxx.net/dl/analysis.xls
will demonstrate what, at first glance (that's all I've had), there is
some definite outliers or preferential IP octet (first) that score the
bulk of play. At the same time, some IP's simply don't appear to get
 /any/ traffic.

Anything in baby blue is a EMPTY ip range. 41.xxx,
 62.xxx,81.xxx,82.xxx,83.xxx,213.xxx,217.xxx for example are horrible
empty. With 3200+ servers (using default 27015 port), they have a 1%
 fill rate!

 Yet, ranges 41.xxx, 61.xxx, 128.xxx, 210.xx x,211.xxx with 200 servers
between these octets have upwards to 50% fill rate!

Even my own 300 servers have a fill rate of 17-24% based on our various
octets (I guess we are lucky).

Anyone is willing to do more review of this data. - It's not at all
inclusive in it's research ( I haven't traced geo data, etc) but it does
give us some numbers to work with.

They you for the diatribe on internet protocol definitions.

The list of reported servers/usage was done at 9pm EST which would be
US/EAST peak but would still show a fairly healthy Western Europe usage
(2GST).

I'll repost new numbers, earlier in the evening and I'll include class A
and B address groupings.

It's hard to tell since no data collection methodolgy was given. The
numbers could be completly random for all we know.

I'm glad to see you are paying attention to your statistics courses in
high-school. You may want to pay more attention to your English though.
As t oan answer to your question, the methodology was a dump of the
Valve Master Server listings for 9pm EST. No other methodology was
used other then to group them by the first octet.

Based only on a server's IP address you can't really tell much about
the server itself. There is nothing about an octet of the server's IP
address that makes it good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

I'm guessing you haven't really read or paid attention to the thread or
the previous postings regarding missing servers. Since Valve feeds you
the masterlist into your STEAM client by IP (ordered by first octet,
based on your specific first octet from your own ISP), IP's happen to
matter quite a bit. The posted theories by others on this list is that
the whole master list is not being dumped to client consoles and that
whole groupings of servers are simply going unlisted. In an attempt to
be constructive, we are trying to find a pattern so that we can go back
to Valve with something solid and not simply an illogical whine.

The way blocks are used by the RIRs means that /8 sized networks* are
more often than not used in a single region. Other than legacy
registrations, there are 5 RIRs that assign IPs, ARIN (North America),
LCANIC (South America), AFNIC (Africa), APNIC (Asian Pacific, includes

If all you have is an IP, then ordering the list by the first octet
makes sense for the /8 you are in. It doesn't really do well beyond
that boundry. After that all best are off. However, it is better than
basing the order off the last octet, which means nothing.

In the other message a few netblocks were picked on. 62/8, 81/8, 82/8,
83/8 213/8 and 217/8 are all RIPE IP ranges. Perhaps there is not the

As t oan answer to your question, the methodology was a dump of the
Valve Master Server listings for 9pm EST. No other methodology was
used other then to group them by the first octet.

A single point of data is all but meaningless. Collect data every 5
minutes for at least 24 hours. Break that data up into 24 hour chunks,
then run some numbers on it. Doing less than that and attempting
global analysis is utterly worthless. Doing daily averages over a week
would be even better.

You may want to be careful, not everyone is a kid on this list. There
are some of us that have been maintaining servers for the better part
of a decade.

So I guess the thousands of posts detailing how stupid the changes were +

problem up huh?

Clear;y there is still major problems. Instead of making a post pretending

I doubt that your single-hone bandwidth provider for your DSL provides
the same quality of pipe people get at some quality carrier hotels and
datacenters.

However.

It sounds like in your one instance you have a quality box and you
probably manage your server to the point it performs very well for the
people that do get good pings to your DSL provider.

In argument for the people who buy/manage servers off data center
bandwidth, I think I can prove that 70%+ of all people /playing/ on a
server are playing on datacenter bandwidth. This is NOT the same
statement as most servers are run off of datacenter bandwidth (I think
the opposite is true, I'll try to prove the point. - maybe that will
convince Valve to change their listings alg.)

- It's not at all
inclusive in it's research ( I haven't traced geo data, etc) but it does
give us some numbers to work with.

lol 100+ posts because the 10 people that THINK this affects them makes 10+
posts each.

Oh no, my server doesn't get any traffic anymore, so it must be Valve's
fault! Oh and look how many people are complaining! A total of 11 people! My
gosh, that's the entire community! Valve, why wont you speak to us? Why wont
you do what no huge company has ever really done before? Even though you
continue to update a game that's like 5 years old, that's not enough!

Honestly, there's still 130,000 people playing at peak times, so obviously
there's nothing wrong here. Your server appears to CERTAIN (as in, not
everybody) people later than sooner on the MSL. So why are you angry again?
Why do you people think you deserve to be shown on the list before other
people? You don't.

Not a thing...to me. There are thousands of home based servers that perform

$315...isn't that a bit spendy? What else do you do with the box? You have

Well, $315/month is a bit spendy. But you get what you pay for when it comes
to DSL. It's cheaper than co-locating, and better than using a dedicated
server.. I like having complete control over my hardware and OS setup.

I certainly do more than run a HL server. I actually run a small web hosting and
design business.

2004-09-17 Thread Bobby
Hi Guys,

Going thru the posts from august to today about the serverlist,
community, not seeing calif and texas servers and the new masterlist
system, there are over 100+ posts

That said, NO response from Valve!!!

I will not kiss and tell however, I have been in contact off the list
with some members of this list and a person from Valve.

Valve thinks the new list is the best thing since sliced bread and other
GSP's have been going crazy with servers missing off the list and
support issues because of this is hammering us bigtime.

Server connections are way down, servers loads are way down on whether
it's a machine with good IP's or bad ips, they both are way down.

Looking back at last years server use graphs in aug/sept, we see a 30%
drop this year.
Some might say people are playing Source this year so 1.6 numbers are
down, Lets not forget we got the 1.5 guys to 1.6 this year so it's a
wash.

When they created this new masterist they had the best intentions I'm
sure, but in doing so they broke something, causing numerous servers not
to be listed at all, most being in TEXAS and CALIFORNIA.

If they cant fix this new list, why not go back to the old list system?

End result is this new masterlist is a BAD idea in more ways than one.

Hmmm, Let me see

When did the change go into effect? Beginning to mid September???

When does School start for most people of that age??

Beginning to mid September???

What is the average age of the players???

You figure it out.

I have seen quite a few flames in the last few weeks on this list to people
who posted questions that were not related to HLDS, and since the server
change, I have seen only about a handful of reasonable posts about this
change.

Instead of whining about the change, it might be more constructive with your
time to offer a positive solution to the problem.

Ask yourself why did valve change the system?

Gather hard proof as to your number claims, put together a responsible and
respectful appeal and address it to the right people.

Whining seldom if ever gets you what you want(ask my 5 year old)

Also on a side note, do you think valve people might just be a bit busy with
HL2 as they just delivered the RC to Vivendi on the 15th???

ANSWER: Valve thought it would be better for the end users, they were
wrong

ANSWER: I provided hard proof and missing servers to Valve and nothing

If they were busy with HL2 why bother touching the masterlist 3 weeks

2004-09-17 Thread Whisper
Jay there were threads in this list that were almost as long as these
ones with people complaining that the old system was unfair and
demanding it was changed.

I told them to shove it and to just deal with it back then, but I
recall being a lone voice on this issue.

You know what they say about speaking up when you have the chance, and
you decide not to, because it doesnt affect you. But hey that story is
a bit too servere for this list, but I think the analogy is within
reason.

I mean you all had your chance to oppose this or to put up some sort

Doean't matter, feel free to ignore this, most of you did the first

Well actually i'm quite happy... our server went from completely dead to
completely full within a few days... before this i would consider the list
broken since we saw almost no traffic and half the time our server
wouldn't even show in the masterlist... but now it's working... so valve has
done something right but i guess it needs more fine tuning so everyone can
enjoy...

It does seem to be firewall related. When connected through the firewall
I never see more than 4000. I just did a test by-passing the firewall
and saw almost 19000 servers. It seems the master server is providing
all the server names to the browser. The browser then queries each
server. If the browser does not get a response it does not display the
server. Thus the 4000 server I would see were just those the firewall
let through.
I also tried setting my steam speed to 56k modem to see if a smaller
flow would perform better, but it made no difference. My concern is if
this is a common problem a large percentage of the 118,000 users of
steam may only be able to see a very small fraction of the servers out
there.

Your issue may be your local firewall limiting the number of UDP/TCP
sessions. The server update will set most home/consumer firewalls off as
an attack (udp flood) and it can easily quit accepting new connections
until the old ones are gone. I have the same issue when I game on my
Netscreen firewall since it limits to 2000 active sessions. I just
simply connect to my Pix firewall and get the full list.

18484 servers for CS alone

Steve:

I have been doing this a long time, there is a MAJOR problem with the
list, I also used to pull 20,000 servers but not anymore, I can wait
till the cows come home and some of us wont see 1500 servers. That was
the point of my post, My side is fine, its Valves side that needs
fixing. I am getting 40+ support calls a day about servers missing off
the list. 20 of those are in CALIF.

Most of us here have done a GREAT deal of Beta-Testing for Valve, They
could at least help us out here.
