[hlds_linux] CZ, the future?

2004-03-28 Thread James Clark

Being the "gamesmaster" for the ISP I work at, I'm getting a few people
asking me about CZ, since I've bought it already they haven't yet.
Most want to know what to expect, i.e. is there going to be more anticheat
stuff, more or less resource hogging etc... I don't know the answers,
wondering if anyone does? What does the future hold?

All I can tell them, from what I've seen so far, is that the maps are
prettier, but you'll need a better PC if your struggling on 1.6.

Cheers,
James.

Note to self.

Don't add:
  exec server.cfg
to your server.cfg, gets itself into a nasty loop.

You'll want:
  mapchangecfgfile server.cfg

(I've given myself the dumb award.)

OK, I'll have a crack at it in a day or two. I vented my frustration by

"purchase" it with my CD-key... I hope this makes sense when I go to do it

No. Fuck that. Why should I _have_ to?

I can play these games under linux:
  enemy-territory
  ut2004
  never winter nights
doom3 (not yet, but JC has said it will happen)
  quake3

There is no argument against linux being a viable platform for games,
it's just marketshare guff. I'd even buy CS again for a client port,
I imagine others would too. We all also know the steam client works
well under linux aswell.

I'll be realistic - I don't beleive it'll happen.

> using a IM client :(

Exactly. If you want reliable communication, use a phone :)

SMTP is fucked - the protocol relies on trust and things being done
correctly - of which humans are terrible at both, thats why we have
spammers. It was intented during a time where the only people using
the Internet were universities and scientists.

Sending and recieving a message and knowing it will get to it's
destination without failure is an essential part of the Internet.

I wonder what will replace SMTP.

[hlds_linux] [steam] latest update quick howto

2004-03-04 Thread James Clark

I had some funkiness when updating my server and managed to sort it be
following these simple steps.

1. Run your steam update the old fashioned way. This will update your
steam client.

./steam -update cstrike /path/to/steam/ [EMAIL PROTECTED] password

2. Remove the blob, the blob is bad.

rm /path/to/.steam/ClientRegistry.blob

3. Run your new steam to create your account.

./steam -command create -username leethaxor -email [EMAIL PROTECTED]
-password password -question question -answer answer

4. Run your new steam to get the update.

./steam -command update -game cstrike -dir /path/to/steam/ -username
leethaxor -email [EMAIL PROTECTED] -password password -verify_all

5. Fix liblist.gam... they've clobbered it again, so metamod won't work
immediately afterwards. (I haven't done this yet, out of laziness,
I think it'll be a no-brainer, just hope the new engine still works
   with metamod.

Note to Valve, please please please leave liblist.gam alone, or provide a
seperate file that specifies the gamedll_linux stuff. We like metamod,
we like amx/adminmod... we like things *just working*, we don't like
having to fix silly things... like liblist.gam.

Cheers,
James

You should have been running at least 1.15 metamod - it has been out
for months. Infact 1.16 has been out for months - although I still use
1.15 - as I saw nothing in the changelog that affected CS.

Yes I do know what it is like for this to happen - I bought Q3 the

The hlds list would be more appropriate as it is a winblows server.

Eliminate plugins one by one until you see it fix itself.

Lack of patience. When I was running VAC after Valve announced a modules

If you put what you want in your server.cfg it will at least be put back
to the defaults on map change. At least this is the case with 3.1.1.0 -
there was some talk about this changing in the latest release but the
thread turned into a flamefest or something so I gave up following it.

rcon should not be given to untrusted people. No-one but myself has
rcon to the servers I run - I don't trust anyone. I use amxmod to give
priveleges to my admins.

Depends on whether your using adminmod or amxmod doesn't it? I'm not
sure if it's a native hlds thing, can someone please enlighten me.

ADMINMOD was in the cstrike root folder I recall.

>From their help:

Create a cfg file with the name of the map (i.e. de_dust.cfg). By way
of example, simply write in:
admin_command admin_restrictweapon 4 6

AMXMOD is in addons/amx/maps/mapname.cfg with the mapconfig plugin.
(I like this more)

That is right, he can run it how he wants. If that means changing all of
his players names so be it, it is up to the player to protect themselves
(i.e. read only configs etc).

Many of the admins on this list rave about the joy of doing an unbindall
on players that are break their rules. Changing someones name is nothing
in comparison.

Who gives a toss what the name gets changed to, it is an irrelevant

I remember being amazed at how many cheats VAC caught in it's first few
releases, I hope it happens again soon. With VAC the way it is now we
can't do anything but keep "waiting for ValvE to provide the answer".

Unfortunately it is so bad that chances are if you are too good you

Who knows. I'm not fussed about CZ anyway, its a single player game.
I don't play single player games anymore. None of my friends own an XBox,

Silence doesn't have to mean there is no action. It's the time of year
when people take time off work gets a bit lax etc. No news is good news -
lets hope like hell!

Unfortunately VAC hasn't caught anyone on my servers in a fair while and
every time I play there are more and more non-regular who just happen
to have that occasional awesome game every friggin round. Cheaters
are running riot at the moment. I've given most of my trusted admins
the ability to ban, they are free to ban who they want for any reason
at all which is hardly as accurate as VAC could be / was.

Bans are local only and automatically cleared so innocent victims can
come back. Hopefully cheaters will get tired of it and go somewhere else.
