First I'd go ahead and buy some new scores. Then I'd call the 2/3rds
that left the old orchestra and tell them a new one is starting up,
then I'd tell the 1/3rd left in the old orchestra that the 2/3rds who
left have started a new orchestra. Next, I'd get the mailing list for
the decimated audience and tell them a new orchestra has started and
invite them to submit entries for a request concert. Then I'd hire a
new conductor/music director for the new orchestra auditioned by the
orchestra. Print up the programs, have a concert and leave the old
conductor flailing in the wind.

If you want to have someone conduct the Stars and Stripes then you
find a local celeb for the 4th of July Pops concert you do in the park
for free and he invites all his/her bigwig hangers-on and increases
your audience with the feature's reporter for the local rag in
attendence. If you get a local anchorperson to conduct, then you get a
free special on the evening news.

Let us know how it goes :-}

Hi all,

what do you guys think?

But seriously Jon (what a bunch of comedians eh??)
I remember my daughter playing horn and trombone in junior high. As the
horn player in the family I was pleased but bewildered that she would
even pick up the "devil's instrument", all that Dies Ire stuff don't
you know. Then I realized that the kid had a talent somewhat for jazz
band and that was why she was playing both. The Kid (Harmony is her
name for future reference) come to some great musical DNA from her
father who was a shining light in the tuba, upright bass world when he
was in school. He now can play just about anything he wants to pick-up
including some pretty luscious folk viola playing (hey, no jokes now,
I'm serious).

So it can be done by the young who don't think anything of just wading
in there and doing it. Had Harmony not gone into theater (I blame her
father for that, his theater DNA was stronger than my music DNA) I
would have tried to direct her toward horn only and maybe flugel if she
wanted to do jazz band and march (however, the small private school she
went to in ME didn't have a marching band). Harmony now works on the
set of "Alias" as a 2nd AD, which just goes to show if you let a kid
follow her(is) happiness good things result.

All that motherly boasting aside, I would have to say that in my
limited experience anyone who switched to horn from anything else never
really takes the time to think about how different the horn religion is
from the other brass religions and the results have been (for the most
part) horrendous.

Horn doesn't not sound like trombone & while it might be admirable to
get a trombone to sound like a horn; (really why would you try, one is
playing a trombone for cripes sake) it should never be confused with
one. Just because you can play louder in the low range of a horn
because of your trombone technique doesn't mean that this is something
you should do on a horn. It sounds horrid and when the same technique
is applied to the upper range of the horn (assuming the ex-trombone
player can play above a staff "Eb") then the effect is even more
painful as fatigue and "white-noise" set in almost immediately. There
is no other way for me to put this (well there is, but I'm just not up
to pandering diplomacy) but I find in my particular rung of the music
world that some of the most un-hornlike sounds come from people who
have switched from other brass instruments to the horn. And this leads
me to why? Why would one switch? And if one does; why on earth not
think beyond this one simple fact: you are NO LONGER playing a trumpet
(higher, faster, louder, brighter, I was the star in my marching
band/jazz band/drum corp) or a trombone (lower, faster, louder, I was
the star in my marching band/jazz band/drum corp)! You are playing
horn; with all the difference and change in mindset that entails.

Horn is a different sound so here's the thing:
1. You insist on playing both: learn to compartmentalise your playing
techniques into HORN & TROMBONE (not shouting just emphasising). Listen
to top rung players of both instrument, preferable before you sit down
to practice, but hey listening is learning so do it when you can. As
you start to listen and learn from each of the best players of the two
instruments you will come away with the proper mind set and techniques
required to do both well. You want to follow this duel instrument thing
to a ridiculous conclusion then find a trombone teacher _&_ a horn
teacher.
Think about why you want to play both; you never mentioned. If it is so
that you can play horn in concert band and then, perhaps, play
something other than the traditional switch to mello for marching (I'd
shoot myself in the foot before I'd try to march mello; who needs the
grief.) or maybe you want to play in jazz band (and who wouldn't want
to do that, even the jazz clueless like me would like to have a shot at
some big band/traditional jazz playing) maybe, instead of the
"traditional" horn shift to trombone, you (and others like you) could
switch to flugel.

I think that horn players would be perfectly suited for this switch.
The ability to use the traditional flugel mouthpiece, much more
resembling the horn mouthpiece than the trumpet mouthpiece (which is
the usual doubling) and a horn players sense of "sound" would translate
much more lusciously to the flugel. Besides think of the reading speed
you gain by playing a flugel. Flugel and Horn are conical and I should
think that would be a plus in doubling; with trombone and horn one is
switching between conical and cylindrical bore, different animals
there. Less embouchure struggle too. Who needs to mess with switching
from the daintiness that is the horn mouthpiece to the birdbath
sensation that is

About mouthpiece popping...
I have at least two compositions that call for mouthpiece popping while
the horn is still attached to the instrument. The pieces have been
played
all over the world (well England and the U.S. ;-) and I've never
had a
problem. On one occasion, however, a hornist objected that doing this
effect could cause his mouthpiece to get stuck. "No, I don't think
so only
trumpets have this problem," I assured him. Well, you guessed it. One
'pop' into the piece and his mouthpiece was thoroughly jammed into his
leadpipe.
His tone on the popping effect, however, was superb.

Looks like a satirical page.google bombing involved?

Look folks, the lesson here is that no matter the site, account info
can be stolen and used fraudulently. This is happening with alarming
regularity on eBay and other selling sites. The items we (as
horn-players) sell are in the thousands of dollars/euros range and that
rings bells to scammers. There are escrow accounts and other somewhat
safe options available, but it is my feeling that what was once a
pleasant option for selling what you have to someone who wants it has
now turned into a high stakes game of fraud, deceit and fear. Almost
every day one forum or news organization warns people about the
"latest" scam online.

The alto flute playing was nice and so was the alto flute itself:-} 3
men of colour: percussion (kinda cute:-), horn and bass. I thought the
camera work was ok but the direction was boring. Same groups of people
over and over. It wasn't until a pan shot that I was able to notice the
horn section was in two rows. I'm mildly interested in what make horns
were played. Most seemed to be nickel-silver.
Jody Foster spoke too rapidly for my liking and Catherine Zeta-Jones
seemed nervous. I have to admit that I didn't stay tuned much for the
last half hour as I was watching "Angel" *blush* and I tend to not like
the pops kind of vocal stuff. I have three more PBS stations on my

[Hornlist] Morceau de Concert & Villanelle

2003-10-23 Thread Leigh Alexander
This is what I have surmised:

Both works were "Morceaux de Concours" jury pieces. The "Villanelle"
was used in 1906, 1913 & 1927. The "Morceau de Concert" was used in
1908, 1914 & 1935. It is my understanding that the teaching of hand
horn technique as a separate discipline stopped around 1903, so it
would stand to reason that a "Morceaux de Concours" for valveless horns
would stop as well. This does not mean that teaching of the hand
technique had stopped it just means that testing on valveless horns
themselves had stopped. I'm thinking that both the "Villanelle" and the
"Morceau de Concert" were in point of fact played on valved horns. As
regards the general statement involving valve clusters being inserted
during the 19 measures before the notate "with valves" that is indeed
possible; just from what I understand, but it is not possible to remove
the valves to play the "without valves" notated at the 6/8. It is
likely that the piece was played on a "valved horn", using hand
technique for the two sections marked "without valves". Remember
students would still be judged on this technique. I think it is
perfectly clear that the "Morceau de Concert" is a "modern" piece meant
to be played entirely "with valves" and the only confusion lies with
the "sons bouches" marking after the adagio. Saint-Saens did intend the
performer to use the French style of "echo horn". That might have been
his little nod to the hand technique still being taught, but largely
falling out of favor.

As for the marking three measures before the "Legerement retenu" in the
"Villanelle", the one that's causing all the confusionwell, in the
Durand edition the marking is: "Sons Bouches" and then "(en echo)".
According to Francis Orval, Dukas' intention _was_ what we have been
calling echo-stopping (hand cover bell opening, finger 1/2 step up).
However he himself and evidently Baumann (at least on my recording)
play this "stopped"; as in slam the hand closed, go for the nasal and
finger 1/2 step down. Orval, at least, explains that using echo horn
here can't be distinguished and in most cases not be heard over the
piano and possibly not over a large orchestra. As an aside I notice
that Baumann plays the "sons bouches" in the "Morceau de Concert" also
fully stopped. John S. mention in a recent email that: "as a point of
pride, I've always performed the echo horn section with the echo horn
technique, even when I've played the piece with orchestra" and I say
that if the orchestra is small then yes, use the "echo horn" even
though Baumann, Orval and others might not. But if you are playing the
"Villanelle" with a piano accompaniment then go for the "stopped"
stylistically it works with this "modern" section and it will be heard.
In Sorcerer's Apprentice the marking is "(Sons d'echo)" and further
explained by the instructions (prenez le doigte un demi-tone au dessus)
which means "finger a 1/2 tone up". Some confusion about this passage
could be because in a the 1958 "Orchestral Passages for the French Horn
from the modern French Repertoire" Compiled and Edited by Phil Farkas
and published by Durand, I believe Mr. Farkas miss translates the
instructions as "1/2 tone _down_ rather than _up_. Every one in the US
knew that 1/2 down was stopped and maybe this lead to other
mistranslations of anything marked "echo". This "echo" direction seems
to be a French stylistic technique not well known in the US in the
early days (like that French Overture style, it isn't written as a
double dot, but you all know to play it that way, now don't you?).
Dukas knew what he wanted, and asked for it. However as is noticed by
various performers the "echo stop" isn't acoustically perfect and
performers play what they think works best. Personally I like the
"echo" for the "Morceau de Concert" and "stopped" for the "Villanelle".

Re: [Hornlist] Saint Saens - Morceau de Concert

2003-10-22 Thread Leigh Alexander
The explanation I got (almost 20 years ago) was that the "sons bouches"
meant an "echo stop" and it was explained to me that I should "cover"
the sound by closing the hand loosely over the bell and finger up a
half-step to give a nice mysterioso echo to the repeated figure.

Hans and others, do I understand you to say that the technique instead
should be to close the hand entirely as if to "full stop" but not so
much to cause the buzzing inherent in the "full stop" and still finger
down a half step?

plus change (in cash). The cash difference that you hand over is
claimed to be an amount that the "buyer" owes to the person picking up
the item, or possibly an amount necessary to pay for shipping the item

weenie is that by the time your bank discovers that the
authentic-looking cashier's check is bogus & charges you back for the
full amount of the bogus cashier's check, your item is gone without a
trace & so are the person who picked up your item & the extra cash you

allow cashier's checks to be paid before their authenticity can be
ascertained. The bad guys not only figured that out before the good

Re, the lip thing I'm not sure it really matters but then again, I
think you should have a horn teacher look/listen to your playing to
make sure that your embouchure is efficient, no matter where the
placement. You might have a dental glitch that make it more comfortable
to slide the mouthpiece one direction or another. If the dental glitch
is the problem and a simple fix you might want to look into that. Do
you think you play/sound better when you move the mouthpiece to the
more central location? If so then you should have a teacher guide you;
if not maybe you should just leave that sucker where it is and plod on
ahead:-}

Simone;

Ask the players in your orchestra why _they_ sport the gold. Compare
them to the answers you get from this list. It's possible a lot of the
players in your orchestra have them because the player: think it looks
cool, thinks it makes them look pro, the teacher has one, etc. However,
you might get one player that has actually thought about it an made a
decision about what is right for them. I had a gold plated mp because I
play with a wetish embouchure and I liked the slickness and the warmth
of the gold. My current mp doesn't come in gold and I've been to lazy
to send it out to be plated. I've survived.

A good trick is to do a deal with the 2nd or 4th horn as applicable,
and
swap octaves every repetition of the tune when you get into the
repeated D's
(tutti) sections.
Last time I played it we used the rehearsals to work on alternate
fingerings, tonguing patterns (single, slow double, ).
We also practiced our octaves. And we took turns taking breaks.
Yes, we behaved during the performance.

whoa folks;
I love playing in horn & brass ensembles at workshops. One that was
particularly fun for me was directed by Hans. I think it's more ego not
to play in these groups especially, using the "blast" rational. I don't
blast, I play what is written. If my part can't be heard then it's up
to the conductor to mention this fact; and if I think the reason he
can't hear me is because there are "elephants" on the other parts then
I will say so. I _do not_ waste my time trying to out-play these bozos.
You will never win this fight & by staying away you only perpetuate
their sort of behaviour & deny yourself the chance to play this music.
I participate for myself not for anyone else. If nothing else I am
always reminded of what that kind of playing sounds like. One can never
have too many reminders of what it sounds like to play like an
"elephant".

Re: [Hornlist] A question for the list

2003-03-02 Thread Leigh Alexander
Hornfolks;

I must be one of the few community hornist who doesn't like the idea
of rotating parts. I especially don't like parts to be rotated during a
concert. If physically moving people is the solution to rotation of
parts, then concerts start to look like some sort insane version of
Cirque du Soleil; waiting for the trumpets to move around and the
percussion to reset is bad enough. If no one switches chairs, just
music, what kind of list would the conductor have to keep so that he
knew where his principal for any particular work happened to be
sitting? Our conductor knows how to conduct, so cues are a wonderful
and strangely normal part of his conducting. Besides, our band is set
up so that the principal player of each section is in close proximity
to another principal player. Moving your 1st horn part to the middle of
the section is just setting yourselves up for blending and intonation
problems. Changing from concert to concert is fine (I guess) if the
section is up for that.

My horn section, also, has recently developed the situation wherein
people just started to show up to play horn. Of course they weren't in
attendance for every rehearsal and one person (med student/intern)
wouldn't show up sometimes until the concert and maybe one or two
rehearsals and not always the dress. If everyone showed up we had 9
horns. Now, we have a huge band (lots of great clarinets, flutes, two
bassoons, oboes (!) a full compliment of saxes and low brass players to
kill for) so the band can handle the 9 players, I guess.
Here's what happened: when I joined the band I took the 4th part
because, well, I like 4th and because the other members of the horn
section had been with the group for a while and wanted to "move up" in
the section. Both players on principal are very good hornist, so that's
not the problem. The problem started when the intern (who was playing
2nd 4th with me) wasn't showing up to rehearsals. So I was playing 4th
alone often against 6 other hornist. Not a problem really, except I
don't like the idea of someone just showing up for a rehearsal (or two)
and then the concert. With seven (good) horns available all the time
it's not like this player was saving our bacon or anything. The real
problem (for me) started when these other two horn players just showed
up. So the section leader moved me up to 2nd 3rd and the two new
players were put on 4th. By the second rehearsal it became clear that
there were rehearsals they couldn't make and a performance one or both
couldn't make so (as I was there all the time) I moved back to 4th
while one of the newbies moved to 2nd 3rd and the other stayed on 2nd
4th. This way those of us who were there for every rehearsal and every
performance were sitting on first stand each part. I began to dislike
the uncomfortable feeling of flux that the section now seemed to be in.
To top it off the player who moved to 2nd 3rd seemed to think I was a
more inferior player since I was on forth and proceeded to "take an
interest in my development" as a horn player. Very bossy, very touchy
feelie (gack:-b) and wouldn't back off until I'd finally had it and was
snappish in reply to a command.

I haven't been back to band since. Should I talk to the conductor or
start with the section leader?
Or, should I just move on and take that 10 week woodworking class that
meets during rehearsal and thereby save myself the hour drive each way,
the petrol, and the 3.50 in tolls? Other solutions out there?

snip, snip

I need some input about a situation that has developed in our
community
concert band.

We are experiencing a period of significant growth, adding almost one
player
per week. Currently we have 50 musicians, five of them playing horn.
 Our
regular horn section has been four players for some time. They are
all
friends and have divided parts between them as they see fit, always

my
approval. This has worked well in the past.

Our principal horn is a dedicated amateur. She has been a member of
the
band for many years. She plays at an adequate level, although she is
still
challenged by "Siegfried's Rhine Journey". I have kept this in the
folders
for several years to encourage her to master the part. Recently we
added
snip snip

How can I best incorporate him into the section so that he stays
interested
and no one else is offended or feels slighted?

Hans, I don't want to be curious; but it's a circus trick some
composers ask us to perform. Apparently they can't let the flutes have
all the fun:-| When ever we complain about having to play (never mind
learn) this stuff (anyone ever play a band piece that calls for a cup
mute? I have) we're seen as elitest, whining, prima-donnas. In some
horn sections I've been in you can almost hear the face shields come
down and the swords unsheathFREDOM!

Why not thinking about a clean & steady tone first. Dont many of you
have this problem first ? Or the problem of hitting the right note ?

Yes, Yes some of us do have these problems and work on them all the
time; but sometimes "you has to play what the conductor gives you". I
don't envision ever saying: Ya know maestro, I'm not there yet in my
studies, could you put this off until I am?" Instead I say "never let
'em see ya sweat". So, I take a big swig of a good beer, whine to the
cat for a while, then off I go to learn how to do some boneheaded trick
who's "special effect" will last all of 2.3 seconds (depending on
tempo).

Look at it this way: tricks come in useful at the horn conference
during that all important setting of the pecking order. I prefer my
placement at the bottom of the order; everyone knows all the good beer
and the fun people are in the basement anyway.

Ones articulation might still be below par and you still bobble pp high
g entrances; but you can distract the hoi-polloi with a pandora's box
of tricks. Don't forget to brush up on your multiphonics while you're
at it.

Now go out there and make mamma proud!
