Detect if STC is running under sub=mstr

2009-05-20 Thread Luc Martens (KBC)
Hi,
Does someone has a clue on how to detect if a STC is running under
SUB=MSTR via a REXX program (or assembler)?

I would like to create a health-check via system/rexx to check if a list of
STC's is running under SUB=MSTR as required.

e.g. NETVIEW: is started under SUB=MSTR but is getting a jobid after JES2 is
started. Checking if you have a jobid or not is not a good solution.

Wondering if somebody else has encountered the same problem?

For jobs running under a subsystem, I get the job step TCB, then
TCBJSCB, then JSCBSSIB. Field SSIBSSNM has the controlling
subsystem name (and SSIBSUSE points to the SJB). I don't recall
whether I ever looked at this for a SUB=MSTR start job, but all
the control blocks are standard, and you should be able to run a
quick assembly to get the offsets and values for REXX coding.

As the saying goes, I have good news and I have bad news G

The good news is
The procedure for submitting a Marketing REQUEST is easy. Just
contact
your IBM Marketing Representative and explain what you want THEM to
submit.

The bad news is,
Try finding out who your IBM marketing rep is. In many cases this is
QUITE difficult - it is even hard for many customers to figure out who

to contact) their local IBM branch.

Once you find your local branch and/or your IBM marketing rep, then
getting a REQUEST submitted should be a piece of cake. If your IBM

Re: Detect if STC is running under sub=mstr

2009-05-20 Thread Rob Scott
The TCB and JSCB control blocks are in the private area of the ASID - therefore
any external monitoring application will have to use cross-memory techniques to
access their contents.

I do not think that there is an easy way to determine in non-xmemory mode if an
ASID has been started under MSTR or JES - however I would suggest that you
examine/compare the contents of the JSAB control block for an ASID that has
issued the Request JOBID SSI call (eg Netview) against a ASID that did start
under the JES subsystem - maybe there are fields that are not populated for the
first case?

JSAB can be located : ASCBAASB--ASSB--ASSBJSAB--JSAB
JSAB mapped by: IAZJSAB in SYS1.MACLIB

I've never tried it, but maybe a Directed LOAD would do the trick.

1. BLDL and get the module size.
2. STORAGE for an area of sufficient size below the line.
3. LOAD using the A= operand to direct the load into your area.

This should relocate all your AD-CONs and leave everything just the way
you want it. But, as I said, I've never tried this. Do some
reading... :-)

Do you really want to be without a HSM Backup for these datasets?

You could either add a HBACKDS 'dataset' WAIT before the HMIG in Mark's

HSM will migrate directly to ML2 after the Incremental is taken. Not

Just so I have a clearer understanding -
Is this to create a backup or DR file for offsite?
Could you use a management class that would move it to ML2 a little later?
Does it need to be immediate?
Could you have a second management class that you could use occasionally
that would migrate to ML2?
Is this because you do not always want to migrate to ML2 but only
occasionally?

I would be very surprised if restarting HSM changed any significant data in any

You need to look in the HSM Storage Administration Guide to see the kinds of
data stored in the OCDS and then determine what is happening at your site that
would add this type of data. Do you have a lot of TAPECOPYs pending?

If you can't find the cause, why don't you just double or triple the size?

Just so I have a clearer understanding -
Is this to create a backup or DR file for offsite?
Could you use a management class that would move it to ML2 a little later?
Does it need to be immediate?
Could you have a second management class that you could use occasionally
that would migrate to ML2?
Is this because you do not always want to migrate to ML2 but only
occasionally?

Thanks.

In some cases , it would be nice to migrate a dataset to ML2, as soon
as it has been writen and closed.
 Can I achive this ?

Other computers have compilers that say if the programmer isn't going

Re: AMODE Switching

2009-05-20 Thread Peter Relson
The appends that refer to what we call directed load are the right
approach if you are APF-authorized.

BLDL
Examine the directory entry and determine the length
Obtain storage of that length
LOAD with ADDR=.

Both the BLDL and LOAD would want to specify whatever DCB is appropriate,
especially if the table is not in the LNKLST.

I saw no answer to the actual question of how could you tell the AMODE.

If you get control in the caller's AMODE (as would occur on a branch
linkage via BASR or BALR), you can use the TAM instruction.
If you get control via some other mechanism (such as LINK or BASSM) you
will have to look at reg 14.
Typically if bit 0 (of the 32-bit GPR) is on, the caller was AMODE 31. If
bit 0 is off and bit 31 is off, the caller was AMODE 24. If bit 0 is off
and bit 31 is on, the caller was AMODE 64.

Subject: DB2 Buffer Pools and RSM Metrics

My apologies if this topic has been addressed recently. I have not been
able to get to this server for some time.

My DB2 folks are wanting to increase the size of their buffer pools and do
some page fixing in memory (real storage). I am told that they already have
allocated some 7.3 gb of buffer pool space and in order to add more, we will
be needing to procure another 8gb of storage.

But when I look a real storage metrics, I see UICs at 2540 and minimal
demand paging rates even at the most constrained times. Local page data sets
are measuring at 26% busy at times, but that can be rectified by adding
more.

I am also being told that we will soon be doing page fixing, and that will
result in sever constraint on the available memory.

Am I right in thinking that I should see significant demand paging and lower
UICs ? Or are these metrics blind to page fixing and buffer pool size
changes ?

CEDF type of ability in IMS??

Thanks all to those who helped me get through step one in IMS. It's pain in
the butt, a lot of stupid little pieces and parts and steps, but it's not
that hard once you know what the pieces and parts and steps are. I got one
of my two transactions working. However, the other one still isn't, and I
see no obvious reason. No messages or anything. So my question is this:

Is there some type of debug/log ability in IMS (perhaps similar to CEDF in
CICS)? Is there an easy way for me to tell that it may be trying to access a
DBD that doesn't have a file or something? I don't know why it just ignores
me when I type the transaction in.

As a secondary question, now that I'm thinking about it. My developers
appear to be used to logging onto IMS, signing in, then just typing the
transaction. Currently, I have to do a /SET TRANSACTION XXX before I can
type in XXX. What is the magic to not have to do the /SET first?

Thanks!

Re: CEDF type of ability in IMS??

2009-05-20 Thread Hal Merritt
It's been a while, but perhaps I can help.

Unlike CICS, IMS is not normally conversational. You enter a transaction and
IMS moves it from queue to queue until the unit of work is complete. If the
transaction so chooses, a reply of some sort may be sent back to the entering
terminal.

It is reasonable to suspect that one or more resources are not available and
the transaction is waiting in some queue. It's been too long for me to be able
to suggest ways to identify what resources may be causing the issue. I seem to
recall some sort of detailed report (DC Monitor?) that can be activated.

But it is also reasonable to suspect that the transaction has simply not sent
anything beck to the terminal.

As I recall, the most basic form of a transaction was to clear the screen, then
enter the transaction name. The transaction would then send a formatted reply
to the terminal.

You can pre format the screen with a /FOR command if you know the format
(message output descriptor or MOD) name.

I've never had occasion to use the /SET TRAN command. If you are finding that
you have to use it, then perhaps the screen is being formatted without the
transaction name as the first eight bytes of the input message.

Having some experience with both CICS and IMS, I would not say that one is any
easier to use than the other. IMS may be a bit more complicated, but it tends
to scale well.

HTH and good luck.

EKM and Public Keys

2009-05-20 Thread Lizette Koehler
I have added the public key from our partner into our Top Secret envrionment.
Now I need to see if it actually encrypted with that public key. Here I am
still not understanding this process of public keys so well.

IEC205I SYSUT2,LK41591T,COPYIT1,FILESEQ=1, COMPLETE VOLUME LIST,
DSN=STORAGE.ENCRYPT$.TEST.VOL4R,VOLS=300027,
LISTED VOL(S) HAVE BEEN DATA ENCRYPTED,KL1CD:L,KL2CD:H,
KL1=rsaceru,KL2=EMKLOWES,TOTALBLOCKS=1

I then took the tape and wrote back out the file. Which was successful. I
thought if I used a public key I would not be able to read the tape again. Yet
my test did not support that thought.

So my questions
1) When you encrypt a tape with a public key, can you still read it?
2) How can you verify that the tape is actually setup to use the public key
and not my private key?
3) We are using EKM software from IBM, are there any displays that will help
me verify that my partner will be able to read the tape?
Anything in ISMF, or CA1?

Thanks

If you encrypted the tape with two keylabels, one from your generated
keypair and the other one from your partner then yes you should be able
to read it. Try encrypting the tape with only their key. Your attempt to
read the tape should fail since you don't have the associated private

Re: DB2 Buffer Pools and RSM Metrics

2009-05-20 Thread Hal Merritt
Actually, the whole system is sensitive to demand paging and especially
interactive workloads. How sensitive? Much less so with modern hardware.

So long as the average demand page in rate is low (zero to a couple a second),
I would continue to increase the DB2 buffer pools little by little until some
point of decreasing return is reached. Perhaps the system starts to page or
perhaps DB2 does not exhibit a justifiable benefit. Then back out your last
step and reevaluate.

You want to fully exploit those resources you have paid for.

If your system starts to page and it looks like DB2 could use some more, then
look at adding more real storage.

In my humble opinion, I think I'd rather see a system a little over committed
than substantially under committed.

Another factor is management's direction. Perhaps the DB2 application is so
important to the business to justify degrading other less important
application.

DB2 performance is very sensitive to buffer pool paging so they should be
backed by real memory and not over allocated. You will more likely hear from
upset users before demand paging hits the significant threshold. Depending
on the number of pages being fixed the effect can be severe.

My apologies if this topic has been addressed recently. I have not been

Local page data
sets
are measuring at 26% busy at times, but that can be rectified by adding

2009-05-20 Thread Bill Klein
The usual testing tool that corresponds to CEDF for IBM, is BTS (Batch
Terminal Simulator) that does NOT actually run in the IMS region. (It can
be set to work interactively with IBM's Debug Tool, Xpediter, or many other
interactive debugging tools) I don't know if it will give you what you
want - but it might.

As far as starting your transactions, do your application programmers just
enter
  transaction name
or do they enter
  /FOR first-screen-transaction-name

I think the latter is what usually works (for MPR transactions).

David Logan loga3...@comcast.net wrote in message
news:011c01c9d954$90d99a70$b28ccf...@net...
Thanks all to those who helped me get through step one in IMS. It's pain
in
the butt, a lot of stupid little pieces and parts and steps, but it's not
that hard once you know what the pieces and parts and steps are. I got one
of my two transactions working. However, the other one still isn't, and I
see no obvious reason. No messages or anything. So my question is this:

Is there some type of debug/log ability in IMS (perhaps similar to CEDF in
CICS)? Is there an easy way for me to tell that it may be trying to access
a
DBD that doesn't have a file or something? I don't know why it just
ignores
me when I type the transaction in.

As a secondary question, now that I'm thinking about it. My developers
appear to be used to logging onto IMS, signing in, then just typing the
transaction. Currently, I have to do a /SET TRANSACTION XXX before I can
type in XXX. What is the magic to not have to do the /SET first?

between nodes which do not have permanent connections, you should remove

the TGP, UNRCHTIM and VNNAME from the XCA GROUP statement. The
DYNVNPFX and UNRCHTIM start options and the DYNTYPE=VN model PU also
become irrelevant.

If you are going to use a connection network because you have nodes
which
do not have permanent connections between them, you should understand
the mechanism behind the UNRCHTIM operand

Re: DB2 Buffer Pools and RSM Metrics

2009-05-20 Thread Mohammad Khan
DB2 performance is very sensitive to buffer pool paging so they should be
backed by real memory and not over allocated. You will more likely hear from
upset users before demand paging hits the significant threshold. Depending
on the number of pages being fixed the effect can be severe.

My apologies if this topic has been addressed recently. I have not been

Local page data
sets
are measuring at 26% busy at times, but that can be rectified by adding
more.

I am also being told that we will soon be doing page fixing, and that will
result in sever constraint on the available memory.

Am I right in thinking that I should see significant demand paging and lower
UICs ? Or are these metrics blind to page fixing and buffer pool size
changes ?

COBOL - BLOCK CONAINS - IBM Marketting Request (more info)

I just wanted to add (for both comp.lang.cobol and IBM-MAIN) that if you
DO
submit a (new) IBM Marketing REQUEST to ask for an enhancement
compiler
option for Enterprise COBOL (or follow-on product) to make an omitted
BLOCK
CONTAINS clause to work the same as the existing (IBM extension) BLOCK
CONTAIN 0
variation, that you should include two references to the existing
requests:

1) The SHARE requirement number is - SSLNGC03003

2) The existing (related to the SHARE requirement) MR number is -

If you include both these in any new marketing REQUESTS, I think that
will
have the most beneficial impact.

Novell Requirements Management System

2009-05-20 Thread Mark Post
Cross-posted to Linux-390, IBMVM, and IBM-MAIN:

Novell has a new requirements portal. If customers would like to give input in
the upcoming releases of Novell products then they should go to
http://www.novell.com/rms

This new requirements system allows Product Management, engineering and
marketing to review requests from Novell customers for enhancements and new
features to products. Even better, the new system allows the person entering
the requirements to track what is happening with a specific requirement and who
is reviewing the request at Novell. Note that RMS is NOT bugzilla or a bug
tracking system.

The portal is also available from http://support.novell.com/ On the left side
of the page, hover your mouse over Contribute, and then when the sub-menu
appears, select Request Enhancement.

Note that you need to sign in with your Novell Customer Center userid and
password to use the RMS. NCC accounts are no cost, as always.

Re: PDSE Anomaly?

2009-05-20 Thread Linda Mooney
Hi Dennis,

We have run a z/OS 2 lpar monoplex config for a long time .  We never share
linklisted datasets or PDSEs between the lpars.  We never directly update a
linklisted dataset from the other lpar.  Most of the linklisted datasets do
have the same names in both lpars, catalogued only to the monoplex they belong
to, on different DASD and those packs are online only to the lpar they belong
to .  When I migrate a member or a library from test to production, I copy the
members/ library to a shared pack and  then, from the shared pack copy to the
linklist library.  I don't do the copies through TSO, I use batch.  I use batch
for the audit trail and because it is my preference.

If you are seeing indications of updates in PDSe cache that don't belong to the
monplex, I would view that as a very risky condition.

Exactly right two monoplex LPARS.

In my situation on

LPAR 1  DB2PROD.SDSNLOAD is cataloged on SYS033
LPAR 2  DB2PROD.SDSNLOAD is cataloged on SYS033

On LPAR 1, I copied a load module from DSN910.SDSNLOAD to the DB2PROD.SDSNLOAD
library.

On LPAR 2, I could not see the updated load module in DB2PROD.SDSNLOAD (on
sys033); even after LLA and after numerous IPL's.  ONLY after specifying the
volser (SYS033) in the tso browse was it able to see the correct module.
THEN, without specifying the volume serial number it displayed okay.

Hi Dennis,

We have to watch out for this too.  If you have a same name dataset on two
different lpars and the alias is related to one user catalog one one lpar and
to a different user catalog on the other lpar, you will see this behavior as
each lpar will supply the correct dataset for its catalog lookup.  When you
supply the volser, the catalog lookup is bypassed - only the named volume is
searched for the dataset.  You can confirm this is your issue by doing a IDCAMS
listcat on each lpar.

On my test lpar I applied some DB2 maintenance to a module.   I could browse
the module and indeed the fix was on.

On my production LPAR, I wanted to copy that module over to the product
libraries, so I did a TSO =3.3 copy and placed it in the production load
library.   I browsed that production load library, and the fix was not on.  I
browsed the original library, and the fix was not on.  The original library is
cataloged to the same volume (usercat), so I know it was pointing to the same
place.

I tried LLA, refreshes, inactivating LLA, and even IPL'ing, but could not see
the fix on the load libraries from my production LPAR (still looked good in
test).

Finally, on the TSO =1 screen, I entered the dataset name AND the volser and
then I could see that the fix was on.  I went out and went back in without
specifying the volser, and the fix was STILL on.

It appears it was cached or something, even through an IPL?   Any
suggestions?

The good news is
The procedure for submitting a Marketing REQUEST is easy.   Just contact
your IBM Marketing Representative and explain what you want THEM to
submit.

The bad news is,
Try finding out who your IBM marketing rep is.  In many cases this is
QUITE difficult - it is even hard for many customers to figure out who (how
to contact) their local IBM branch.

Once you find your local branch and/or your IBM marketing rep, then
getting a REQUEST submitted should be a piece of cake.  If your IBM
Marketing Rep does not know how to submit a REQUEST, then come back to us

Or is your COBOL program linked with compiled Rexx code? How

Agenda

* Coffee and Rolls at 08:30 AM
*  Welcome and Introductions
* Linux on System z: Why and Which Applications ?
   Presented by Bill Reeder, IBM

This presentation will outline the architecture behind Linux running on
System z, and show which applications are BEST run on System z Linux, and
why. Session will show which questions and approaches do work and give
real customer examples that validate this approach. We will also cover
applications which work extremely well on System z Linux and reasons why in
a competitive situation System z Linux could be the better choice, and
highlight some customer examples.

* Big Blue Goes Green: An Update on how IBM is consolidating computers to
   double capacity
   Presented by Bill Reeder, IBM

On August 1, 2007 IBM announced that its Project Big Green would spur a
global shift to Linux on the mainframe. Further, IBM claimed to double
computing capacity with no increase in consumption or impact by 2010. And,
as if that were not ambitious enough, IBM also announced that it would
consolidate 3,900 of its own distributed servers to 33 mainframe computers
in 3 years. How is it possible to achieve such massive consolidation? Bill
tells us how and gives us an update on this project.

Bill Reeder bio:
Bill Reeder has been with IBM 13 years and he was among the original team
that began Server Consolidation for IBM. . Bill is responsible for Linux
across all IBM server platforms to help customer decide from a technical
and business reason which platforms to deploy . Prior to joining IBM.
Bill worked as an architect, System Administrator, Application developer,
database administrator and system integrator. He is a frequent lecturer
at IBM Top Gun Classes, Technical Conferences, and many IBM and customer
events. Bill is currently responsible for Linux Systems Sales and
Strategy, Americas Group.

Would it be feasible for you to invoke IKJEFT01 instead of the
Rexx interpreter to run your Rexx exec? That way you have the TSO
environment available to your Rexx script, and can use SYSDSN and
friends. IKJEFT01 will return the return value from last command
executed.

Or is your COBOL program linked with compiled Rexx code? How
does your program communicate with Rexx?

Doesn't IKJEFT01 require that it be invoked only from an
APF authorized program, which might be an obstacle to the
OP?

If the OP intends to process the file in the COBOL program,
might allocating it in Rexx shortcut the need to allocate
it in the COBOL code?

On the other hand

Forget my earlier lame suggestion. As a couple of other people
have already pointed out, calling BPXWDYN is the way to go.

It will do exactly what you need. You should be able to call it
directly from your COBOL program. Or, you could call it from your Rexx
program, which you might want to have available for other programs to
call, from a variety of environments - TSO, MVS batch, or USS.

Re: CEDF type of ability in IMS??

2009-05-20 Thread David Mierowsky
Hi David

A number of IMS command should be able to help :

/DIS Q TRAN will show you if your transaction is queued
If it is, there may be a number of reasons why the transaction is not
scheduling
/DIS TRAN will show you if the transaction is stopped
/DIS PROG (psb name) will show you the status of the PSB - check
the status for NOTINIT which will indicate a PSB problem. Other statuses such
as STOPPPED PSTOPPED may indicate other issues. The SYSLOG from the
control region may show you reasons why a PSB is stopped as well
Check the class of the transaction and make sure that there is a message
region that supports that class

Can I also suggest you subscribe to the IMS discussion list and post IMS
questions there - there are a number of very helpful and knowledgable people
on that list. It can be found at http://IMSLISTSERV.BMC.COM.

Re: CEDF type of ability in IMS??

2009-05-20 Thread David Logan
Thanks! I found it and set it up. It is quite cool. The problem I am having
with BTS now is that I am testing a transaction that works online, but when
I run it under BTS, the formatted 3270 output I get is blank. Nothing but
the transaction name twice in that screen. I haven't yet figured out what
I'm missing to show the actual screen.

And for the transaction that *isn't* working in IMS online, in BTS it
appears to go through a whole bunch of DLI calls and screen calls, and even
seems to send formatted output to the LTERM in BTS, but in online I get
diddly. Just a quick X and nothing else. (and as before, I get nothing in
the formatted output, but I can't trust that yet per my first problem.)

*sigh* :) I will figure it out!

Subject: CEDF type of ability in IMS??

The usual testing tool that corresponds to CEDF for IBM, is BTS (Batch
Terminal Simulator) that does NOT actually run in the IMS region. (It can
be set to work interactively with IBM's Debug Tool, Xpediter, or many other
interactive debugging tools) I don't know if it will give you what you
want - but it might.

As far as starting your transactions, do your application programmers just
enter
  transaction name
or do they enter
  /FOR first-screen-transaction-name

I think the latter is what usually works (for MPR transactions).

Actually, I believe I spoke before thinking earlier. I think the
program would need to call IKJTSOEV and IKJEFTSR, and I don't think
they're restricted to authorized programs. But your suggestion of
calling BPXWDYN is much more sensible.

If the OP intends to process the file in the COBOL program,
might allocating it in Rexx shortcut the need to allocate
 it in the COBOL code?

If all the Rexx program is used for is to check whether the file
exists, then they can eliminate it altogether by just calling BPXWDYN
directly from the COBOL program. But if there's more to it than that,
then yes, if the Rexx program call to BPXWDYN succeeded it might as
well leave the file allocated, and the COBOL program needn't do that.
