Hi Bro Angad,

Would be great if you could be a little less generic-- post a few SPECIFIC
words about the underlying philosophy and motivation and ideas behind the
group; maybe a bit about the specific technologies core members of the OSUM
group are interested in; maybe links to their blogs too.

I dont agree with everything Gora says; but yea... there's a grain of truth
in his objection... coz when I clicked the link, all I got was a landing
page which asked me to register-- so even though I love watching demos and
learning new techs I couldnt quite get what specifically (out of 3-4
specific goals) you guys aim at in starting OSUM.

So buddy; for the benefit of folks like me; feel free to drop another mail
with a slightly more detailed thingie about whose the target audience;
interests/focus/achievements of core members of OSUM; and which specific
open source technologies your initial focus will be on...
(and dont say all Open Source Techs...)

Also, dont take Gora's comments abt grounds for moderation to heart... he
can be caustic at times, but he's just one more member of this group... just
like you and me... take it as positive feedback and defend yourself if you
think it's off-target, and remember, there are many who're interested in
ventures like this one... if only you package the info as something
instantly relevant... instead of visit the landing page and register
Remember one person, one vote...

Take Care... and Look fwd to hearing/learning more abt your venture...
OSUM!!!

Today I came to know about an event called freedom and software
happening in Chennai on 21st September through a blog.
The event website is a google site
http://sites.google.com/site/freedomandsoftware/ Most of the friends
participating are our friends. But this mail is for some
clarifications

The invitation text says following

quote
M. Subramanian - The Mayor, N. Ram - Editor, The Hindu, Debesh Das -
Minister of Information Technology, West Bengal, Kiran Chandra -
Director, Free Software Foundation India Prabir Purkayastha -
Secretary, Delhi Science Forum, have been confirmed to be the panel of
speakers.

The objective of the event will be the launch of the project for the
development of a Tamil Version of the GNU/ Linux operating system. The
launch will be made by the Mayor, M.Subramanian. The project will be
developed by engineering students with able technical support from the
IT professionals professors, and infrastructural support by the
entrepreneurs.

The logo and caption for the Free Software Foundation, Tamil Nadu will
be launched by Mr. N. Ram.

The event will be attended by the IT professionals, Entrepreneurs,
Researchers and professors of reputed colleges, from all over the
country and the registration will be open to all, so you can bring all
your friends as well. There will be no entry fee for the same.
/quote

My questions are Following

1.Is this event anyway related with Free Software Foundation?

2. This news is not announced in any Free Software Mailing lists,
like FSF-Friends, FSF-Tn(http://mm.gnu.org.in//pipermail/fsf-tn/) ILUG
Chennai etc . It is not announced yet in gnu.org.in also. Why This
much secrecy around this?

3.. The above invitation text says logo and caption for the Free
Software Foundation, Tamil Nadu will be launched in the function. Is
FSF India decided to start regional FSFs? If yes why this is
organising in a a secret maner?

3. The Invitation text says The objective of the event will be the
launch of the project for the development of a Tamil Version of the
GNU/ Linux operating system, why there is a need of another
distribution when tamil is well supported in most of the upstream
distributions? . Let it be the work of Tamil Localisation groups.

4. The contacts provided in the website contact page is not at all
familiar in Free Software Community. And There is no information on
who is organising this event.

On a quick checkup with friends in Chennai, they says it is an event
Organised by Communist Party of India (Marxist) . Thats why the
secrecy. I don't have a problem in a political party supporting free
software cause. But If it is the case i am very suspicious on
following points
1. The exclusion of the Free Software Movement in Chennai in Organising it,
2. Creating a body with power structure before Contributing anything .
I dont think a free software Foundation is not needed for releasing a
Localised GNU/Linux Distribution
3. Secrecy in whole process of a Public event

I am expecting a reply from FSF India on this

Just to add to that lives is to be taken from the
debian-multimedia.org repository. Doesn't come by default.
There seems to be an issue with the newer audio libraries (namely
libavcodec51) which doesn't allow some modules to get loaded though.
Because of that a few packages like xvidcap became unavailable due to

If you have your debian etch settings replace your current xorg.conf
with that one.
(If not replace with maybe one generated by a knoppix live CD). Exact
small tweaking may be needed.
Better to take these two shortcuts. I have the same card on etch too

Excuse me? I can indeed be caustic at times, but maybe you can
use your alkali detector to point out how this was the case here.

With due respect to you, I repeated much of what you said-- and rephrased
your mail in a way that Angad feels a need to politely reply rather than
there be a flame-fest like earlier--- about Solaris versus Linux.

As much as I respect you; I felt, that getting a guy to automatically raise
his defenses and fight it out--- with 30-40 mails exchanged is bad for a
public mailing list's readership figures.

Also, Gora, maybe it is a cultural thing but the way your mail was phrased
it is easy to misunderstand it as a threat-- atleast many of my elders would
have--- and react offensively--- will talk more of that someday offline in
person with you.

Regards,

NS
ps: end of exchange-- atleast from my side.

@Raj: Kind Sir, a dictionary!!! wow... your Rs 500/- is happily accepted
thanks in anticipation... Om, Shubh Labh, Shubh Labh (auspicious
gain!!!)

[ilugd] Fwd: [FSF] Thank you SGI, for freeing the GNU/Linux 3D desktop!

2008-09-19 Thread narendra sisodiya
-- Forwarded message --
From: John Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 9:35 PM
Subject: [FSF] Thank you SGI, for freeing the GNU/Linux 3D desktop!
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In January of 2008, software code at the heart of GNU/Linux 3D
applications was discovered to be non-free -- a potential disaster
for free software advocates hoping to see advanced graphical
acceleration now common on modern operating systems.

The code, licensed by Silicon Graphics (SGI), was distributed under
the SGI Free License B and the GLX Public License. These licenses,
although permissive, contained three sets of terms which created
significant burdens for all users and developers and a particular
problem for the free software community because they made the code
non-free (see the Free Software Definition at
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html).

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) Free Software Compliance Lab's
Brett Smith explained, We discovered that these licenses covered
contributions that SGI had made to the X.Org Project and the Mesa 3D
Graphics Library. These projects, including SGI's code, are an
important and familiar part of modern GNU/Linux desktop systems. The
FSF Compliance Lab then worked with SGI towards today's
announcement.

You can read SGI's press release here:
http://www.sgi.com/company_info/newsroom/press_releases/2008/september/opengl.html

Please vote for their press release on digg.com at:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/SGI_Further_Opens_Its_OpenGL_Contributions

Steve Neuner of SGI said, SGI has been one of the most ardent
commercial supporters of free and open source software, so it was
important to us that we continue to support the free software
development community by releasing our earlier OpenGL-related
contributions under this new license. This license ensures that all
existing user communities will benefit, and their work can proceed
unimpeded. Both Mesa and the X.org Project can continue to utilize
this code in free software distributions of GNU/Linux. Now more than
ever, software previously released by SGI under earlier GLX and SGI
Free Software License B is free.

Welcoming today's announcement, Peter Brown, FSF executive director,
said, We couldn't be happier with this decision, and we're very
grateful to SGI for all their assistance. The FSF is committed to
ensuring that everyone's computing tasks can be done with free
software and this SGI code plays an important role in scientific and
design applications and in the latest desktop environments and
games.

Still, there are a few legal loose ends that need to be tied up
before GNU/Linux distributions can utilize all the code base in
freedom. Brett Smith explained, There are a few other copyright
holders that I'm working with to resolve their licensing issues and
I'm confident that fully free distributions like gNewSense will soon
be able to utilize all of this code. The FSF will be releasing
further information early next week.

In addition to thanking SGI for this major contribution, the FSF
would like to thank the OpenBSD community for alerting the FSF to
the problem.

[ilugd] ubuntu-studio questions

2008-09-19 Thread Nalin Savara
Hi Friends,

Firstly, my thanks to Gajendra of IIT-Del for giving me ubuntu 8 and to the
group for sharing it's experiences.

Secondly; some questions from my side, since I installed ubuntu 8 and also
ubuntu studio; but am facing some issues:--

(1) Ubuntu-studio doesnt seem to remember network settings; infact after
installing ubuntu studio, my WLAN is not working.
WLAN worked perfect with LiveCD Boot and with some effort worked perfect
with Ubuntu also. but after installing ubuntu-studio, it just stopped
working.

Can some-one please help me; share possible snafus that might be the cause
of this ?

(2) The boot-menu shows winXP as the last option.
how to change the default order of OSes shown in on-boot menu ?

Do let me know...

Thanks and Regards,

[ilugd] Licence schemes for the Ideas !!!

2008-09-19 Thread narendra sisodiya
Hey, I got a idea that can we GPL our ideas ??
Like normally I use to get a large number of ideas which I will not able to
implement in this life. But I want somebody should implement those ideas.
But I do not want that somebody should use them as patent or propitiatory
work. infact if Ideas are in GPL public domain then everybody is allowed to
implement it. So in the current licence schemes , can i publish my ideas
under GPL or similar licence.
for example , let suppose I will a rocking idea for energy saving system and
will tell the way of implement it,But i will not implement it, I want other
companies to implement it.
So is it possible to deliver the rocking ideas in public domain insuring
that it will not be used for patent or similar purpose??

Easy Way: sudo editor-of-ur-choice /boot/grub/menu.lst and then
change the order acc to your preference
Another way(easy or difficult, u decide :) ): sudo apt-get install
startupmanager, then run startupmanager, choose ur default os.

No buddy, better you give it in person so that I can give you a piece of my
mind also also.

Tell me; is writing abt instead of about so damn deviant that you need
to pass sarcastic remarks like this ? Or is it that you enjoy being
patronizing and kicking a man when he is down, expecting that you'll get
away with it ?

with the next 1 billion internet users expected to access net frm mobile
devices, IMHO it's the ones that make sharp remarks abt SMS lingo that need
a SMS dictionary--- rather than me.

It's just a opinion--- based on fact--- but if chat lingo can be used, then
why not SMS lingo rather than queen's english ?

Brother, since your blog analyzes psychology also; tell me we
celebrating the software freedom day; but why still this slave mentality and
competition to be more english than the englishman himself ???

We gotta get out of our slave mentality... and we gotta stop licking our
colonial master's boots-- before our country can really emerge as a global
power in it's own right.

Think about it...

Buddy,
That's right.

Also, as per US Patent laws, a idea or process can be patented only if it is
not already public knowledge at the time the patent application was filed.

But yes, on a more serious note beyond Edison's quote; I feel that what you
mention has been an issue since time immemorial--- that if one has a good
idea and not the time to single-mindedly pursue it; then how can one put
that idea in the service of humanity--- without someone else making the
bucks on it OR restricting public access to that idea for others who too may
take it forward.

I would love to hear/learn more abt this. Please do feel free to share your

 Buddy,
 That's right.

Also, as per US Patent laws, a idea or process can be patented only if it
 is
not already public knowledge at the time the patent application was filed.

But yes, on a more serious note beyond Edison's quote; I feel that what you
mention has been an issue since time immemorial--- that if one has a good
idea and not the time to single-mindedly pursue it; then how can one put
that idea in the service of humanity--- without someone else making the
bucks on it OR restricting public access to that idea for others who too
 may
 take it forward.

I would love to hear/learn more abt this. Please do feel free to share your

Can we make our own licence scheme and publish idea over that. I mean , If
we do not such system for this then how we can develop a system for
publishing free ideas, moreover it will provide a platform for discussing
ideas. Where use can check his idea is already published and then he can
find similar person who can work on the same idea. we can call it as
socialing ideas. my main concern is about do we have any system for this ?

If you had been using a language, then it would be a lesser problem. The
point is that 'SMS lingo' is not a *language*. If all you people
writing sms-speak would write the same word the same way all the time,
you would probably have a better case to argue about it being an
acceptable form of communication and perhaps, the rest of us would
cringe and accept it as yet another inevitable sign of us getting

different interpretation of how to communicate. Actually, I would
consider this as noise, in a community where written communication is
the major mode of how people interact.

So till sms-speak becomes a language, it is going to be considered to
be an inferior and an unwanted form of communication here. Nobody is
going to ban people writing in such a form, but people who could have
had a more fruitful discussion with you, might not.

P.S. I consider this discussion to be very relevant to this list, as
this is a frequently discussed topic (and is actually mentioned in out

I am actually a bit surprised how a mere collective suggestion from
people about writing in the official language of this list has to go
towards accusations of genuflecting to the British, especially when you
are arguing for a (probably american) variation of this language
itself. :) It has been 60+ years since we sent the Britishers out, and
the fact that we are still using English should amply show that it is
as native to this land by now as any other state language. In fact,
more people use English virtually as their first language than there
are native speakers for many dialects in this country (citation
needed :-P )

IANAL.

First of all, public domain is equivalent to no licence at all, and
could probably only theoretically prevent software patents. The only
way to *ensure* that it cannot be patented is someone going through
every patent application from this day onwards to check if it matches
any of your ideas in the public domain. Of course, it is not practical
and so you can stop thinking on this line. :)

Also, unless your idea is overtly visible, you can never ensure that it
is not hidden by implementations protected by trade secrets.

My suggestion would be that, if you really interested in the world
benefiting from your ideas, to worry less about who can exploit it and
instead just go ahead and publish it in some way. The form of
publishing(books, art, etc.) could be copyrighted and put in public
domain or some of the creative common licenses.

What you should worry about is how to disseminate it as much as possible
(and therefore it is important you use as liberal a distribution
licence as possible) as the more widespread it becomes, the better
protection it will get against some one trying to patent it in some
way.

P.S. The world of patents is full of jugaads(we call them hacks,
BTW ;) ). So don't let it stop you. :)

Interesting enough as the ``idea'' is :) , I'm afraid it's not feasible
for multiple reasons.

Firstly, what you're discussing is a form of ``pre-patent''. Patents
are on ideas that have existing implementations. Now, patents are bad
enough but if we permit, e.g. Microsux to start patenting ideas no one
will ever be able to develop software again, since they'll just put
10,000 people into generating ideas and making them proprietary.
Remember, you're not the only one with ideas, and GPL-ing them wouldn't
be the only thing possible if the law permitted protecting ideas.

Then there's the whole question of implementation. Current laws do not
permit protecting ideas without implementations for a very good reason:
ideas are a dime a dozen (no offence intended). That's one of the
reasons you have both FSF and GNU -- the one generates ideas, and the
other generates implementations of those ideas that can be protected by
law.

Third, no law currently exists to protect an idea. Sure, you can
document it and protect the document using some licence, but if someone
rewords the idea and creates a new document incorporating it she can
use the same laws to protect her document too. The legal system
currently doesn't (and probably never will) protect bare ideas
themselves.

The closest thing you can do today is to implement your idea and try to
get a patent on it (which I personally believe is a bad move).
You /may/ then be able to get some level of protection. Otherwise
you're out of luck.

[ilugd] { Project Idea } Power Saving Scheme for Electronic Devices in Industrial and Software firms using RFID

2008-09-19 Thread narendra sisodiya

This *Idea Document* is licenced under GNU, FDL
All are free to implement it. Nobody is allowed to derive patents on it.
Author is too busy to check that it has already implemented or not. Author
is releasing on mailing list so that discussion can bring that some more
ideas and related work. Please do not complain/abuse if you find this as a

*
Title : Power Saving Scheme for Electronic Devices in Industrial and
software firms using RFID

Abstract : *This system make intelligent decision for device turn-off or
turn-on which is based on correlation between location of a user and his
electronics device such as monitor's using RFID or similar sensor
technology.
*
Description : *Normally in office we use computer monitor and employees use
to forget to turnoff/shutdown their system or monitor. same case with
lights. We can have a automated intelligent shutdown scheme using RFID
position location.

In this system, a central database we will be maintained a record for
location of electronic device such as computer monitor and will assign a
unique device ID. This will also maintain a record for the employees who is
using it. So, This database will maintain a user profile under which certain
devices will be assigned to a employee.
Employee will maintain RFID based or similar low cost sensors which can use
triangulation algorithm to discover the position of employee and his system
devices and calculate distance and behavior of employee and make a
intelligent decision to shutdown the system monitor which consume a large
mount of electricity.

*Algorithm for Intelligence : *the basic idea of intelligence is to
calculate the distance between user and system monitor and decide if he is
outside the Building then turnoff the system monitor and corresponding
lights. If he is inside the building then decide on the basic past
experience. Like user can go for lunch. System finds that if he is away form
his place for more then 5-10 minute then turnoff monitors. If user is going
outside and coming back again and again for every 5 and 10 minute them we
can increase the wait time. We can Also include the Keyboard /mouse under
decision process. If we sit against any system it is very unlikely that we
do not touch keyboard and mouse for more then 5-10 minute, So this system
can also decide that if user is talking to some body and not doing any
useful work on computer for more then 20 minutes ( detected by no more
keystroke or moving mouse events) then also we can shut down the monitor.
After making the decision , the central server will send proper signal to
disable power of a particular port.

In think , A huge amount of electricity can be saved using this scheme. I do
not know more on RFID technology. So I do not know the implementations of
distance calculation using RFID. May be we can use some technology such as
GPS etc.

The ideas are good, but I doubt if the second statement (not deriving
patents) has any validity.

OTOH IANAL, TINLA :)

As the subject says, is there an all-FOSS MS Exchange server
replacement? One that does mail and calendaring with LookOut at least.

A built-in (or known to work) web-based mail and calendaring add-on

Read http://blog.sudev.in for topics ranging from here to there.

PS: I know most of people do not follow email niceties (mostly they
are not aware) but if you follow bottom post/in-line post style of
email conversations it becomes a whole lot easier to carry on
meaningful dialogue and you can snip out what is not meaningful too.
Most people just hit reply button and top post leaving prior message
appended uselessly at bottom. See if you can adopt this style and
persuade others. In case you are already doing this . great,
spread the message.
