[ilugd] Domain User Login Failed in openSUSE 12.1

2012-03-28 Thread Amit Sharma
Hi,

We are doing a pilot for openSUSE 12.1 desktop for our organisation.

Things are looking positive but we are stuck at one point now. We are able to
make linux box part of windows domain and log in successfully. After 2-3
reboots all of sudden domain user is not able to log in. Message says Login
Failed.

We googled and ggled but did not find anything which can resolve issue.

Please Help.

Is it better idea to try openSUSE 11.4 instead of 12.1. Is previous version
more stable?

[ilugd] Linux Desktops for Trainees and Support Departments - Help Required ....

2012-03-04 Thread Amit Sharma
Dear All,

Ours is a Software Development company where users desktops and most of the
servers are Windows Based. I joined this company about 2 years back and have
migrated few servers to Linux including Helpdesk System OTRS, ERP, Proxy, etc.

Now I have been given a task to prepare test lab for Linux Desktops using
openSUSE (no specific reason for choosing openSUSE, may be it supports LTSP
better that other I guess!. We do have plan to evaluate Thin Clients hardware
as well).

Idea is that at least trainees and support departments should be able to use
Linux with OpenOffice, etc.

I have migrated an entire corporate few years back from 100% Windows to 98%
Linux desktops and have fair idea of the entire process but their migration was
quite straight forward and combination of Linux plus WINE worked great.

Now I have few limitations and need your help. I am googling for the same and
need you expert view and help on below:

1. Linux Desktops should be part of AD i.e. end users should be able to log
into Linux Desktops using their windows ID and password. How do I do that?

2. We are using exchange server 2007, will Evolution be near to what MS Outlook
is?

3. Will Linux support LYNC?

4. Single Sign On - Like IE support for most of our web based applications.

5. What are other areas I should be aware of before submitting my plan to
management and take up this challenge!

Thanks and Regards,

I log in as normal user say User1 and I run

then
cat /adminscripts/logs/eximcount |mail -s Count of EXIM Mailq on Server

The above runs fine manually, however when I try to run it through crontab (as

[ilugd] Which FAQ Software can I Use?

2011-11-30 Thread Amit Sharma
 Hi,

I would like to provide Linux based FAQ software for my department where
technical people can update the FAQs.

I tired FAQ module on OTRS 3.0.9 but some of the important features (like team

attachments) are not available in it.

I think independent FAQ Software/ Bulletin Board would resolve most of queries.
Please suggest the best open source FAQ / Bulletin Board that I can try.

[ilugd] Questions about OTRS DB Replication and Attachments in FS

2011-06-03 Thread Amit Sharma
Hi,

I have OTRS 2.4.7 working successfully on Linux box from past 1 year. MySQL was
configured in replication mode and the DB was getting successfully replicated
when the attachments were begin stored in DB.

Of late I have moved to FS for attachments and from them on replication has
started giving trouble.

I get the following error at mysql prompt:

Last_SQL_Error: Error 'Table 'ticket' is marked as crashed and should be
repaired' on query. Default database: 'otrs'. Query: 'UPDATE ticket SET
escalation_response_time = '0' WHERE id = '101233''

My questions are:

1. Is the above issue related to DB being changed to FS for attachments?
2. How to I ensure sync of var/article on realtime basis.
3. Is there any other option of having realtime copy of OTRS so that in case
primary servers crashes, the backup server takes over as primary almost
immediately.
(Earlier it was working fine and it used to get switched to backup server
almost immediately. This was done thru cron scripts)

[ilugd] How to check data size on HP Tape using amanda or any other utility

2010-03-02 Thread Amit Sharma
Hi

I have a HP Ultrium 2 tape on which data was backed up using amanda and OS was
BSD Unix.

I have to restore it on some other location. I had setup amanda on RHEL 5 and
able to see and extract the data using

-bash-3.2$  /usr/sbin/amrestore -p /dev/st0 | /sbin/restore -i -v -b 2 -f -

-bash-3.2$ add *

-bash-3.2$ extract

Now the data restored this way is about 300 MB whereas the sender of tape says
it should be much more than this. However he is also not sure about what the
data size on tape is.

Is there any other command/ utility from which i can see/ extract data from
tape? or atleast cross check if the size is 300 MB only.

amit

Re: [ilugd] FTP error while running script in cron

2009-12-02 Thread Amit Sharma
 Any pointers?

If a script runs from the console but not from cron, 99% of the time
it's one of these two things -

 1. The user which executes the cron script is not the same

But the scripts runs for say 18Gb and then gives the 'not enough disk space
 error'

Do any of your partitions have ~18GB as free space? Do a `df -h` and see

Yes. Many Partitions have 18GB or more free space.

I would like to emphasise on the point again .

Same Script is able to successfully transfer (FTP) 40GB data when run as user
root in command prompt. When same script is scheduled in cron for 2345 hrs
(weekly), script runs and transfer say 18GB of data and terminates with error

426 Connection closed; Not Enough Disk Space. Aborting..

Hope this clarifies the issue.

regards,
Amit

Re: [ilugd] FTP error while running script in cron

2009-12-02 Thread Amit Sharma
I asked the question to ascertain if there's a particular partition, say /tmp
which has around 18GB of disk space and the file is temporarily transferred
there. Since the disk space is limited to ~18GB, the file being transferred
there temporarily isn't copied completely, and instantly gives the error and
halts. Just a guess. You may want to check the disk sizes while the upload is
in progress.

I would like to emphasise on the point again .

Same Script is able to successfully transfer (FTP) 40GB data when run as user
root
in command prompt. When same script is scheduled in cron for 2345 hrs (weekly),
script runs and transfer say 18GB of data and terminates with error
426 Connection closed; Not Enough Disk Space. Aborting..

How do you know that it gives the error 426 connection closed?

Cron Daemon sends email to root (part of email is given below)

426 Connection closed; Not Enough Disk Space. Aborting..

When i run the script manually, here is the email text:

   226 File received ok.

Do you check the cron logs or get an email from cron? Are you logging the
error somewhere? What does your cron line show - if you can share that (you
may hide the script name).

Here is the script:
---
#!/bin/bash
#Daily Backup Script for backing up /home/bkup
echo Time backup started = $(date +%T)
before=$(date +%s)
datestamp=$(date)
tempdate=$(date +%F)

HOST='192.168.1.20'
USER='abc'
PASSWD='def'
ftp -n -v $HOST EOT
user $USER $PASSWD
delete /bkup/Linux_folder_backup.tar.gz
put /bkup/Linux_folder_backup.tar.gz
bye
EOT
sleep 12
#
# Calculates and outputs total time take
after=$(date +%s)
elapsed=$(expr $after - $before)
hours=$(($elapsed / 3600))
elapsed=$(($elapsed - $hours * 3600))
minutes=$(($elapsed / 60))
seconds=$(($elapsed - $minutes * 60))
echo  Weekly FTP Upload - $datestamp - Time Taken $hours hours $minutes
minutes $seconds seconds /root/ftpupload.log
echo - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - /root/ftpupload.log
cat /root/ftpupload.log | mail -s Weekly_FTP_upload_$tempdate amit_...@yahoo.com

--

Also, about the 2345 Hrs weekly part - I'm sure you would have tested it at
other times also. Can you check, thru cron, at some other time than 2345 Hrs,
to upload the file, and simultaneously monitor the local and remote server
about which file systems are being filled up. That can give some indication
about what next to check. This would work if you have shell access to both
the servers. For e.g. /tmp is getting filled up and then it is transferring
to say /data/filename.tar.gz

Here is :
vi /var/spool/cron/root

45 23 * * 6 /scripts/FTPuploadWeekly

I understand the script being run manually works, but not thru cron. Maybe
thru cron the $PATH is not available and the desired binaries are not usable.
You may be using expect scripts, or php/python to do the ftp and their
paths are incorrect (as an example your version of php is installed in
/usr/local/bin/php, and the system is taking /usr/bin/php).

Last, the yahoo account that you're using somehow mangles the e-mails, and
becomes difficult quoting it. Maybe you can shift to plain text while
replying to the e-mail, would help.

Hope this one is better!

Re: [ilugd] FTP error while running script in cron

2009-12-02 Thread Amit Sharma

426 Connection closed; Not Enough Disk Space. Aborting..

 Hope this clarifies the issue.

Not really, the error message is clear enough saying the fs is out of
space :(. Perhaps there is some other job (on the ftp server) that
comes by and cleans up the fs and when you try it manually, voila there
is enough space and your file transfer succeeds!

I suggest that you discuss the issue with the sys admin of the ftp
server that your connecting to (seriously) before banging your head on
your script :D

I also suggest that you disable your cron for one week and run the
script manually @ 23:45 hours on the day that is programmed in your
cron settings and see if you get fs full error.

Could be one of the possibilities, yesterday I have changed the time from 2345
to 1345.

Lets See!

Re: [ilugd] FTP error while running script in cron

2009-12-01 Thread Amit Sharma

 Any pointers?

If a script runs from the console but not from cron, 99% of the time
it's one of these two things -

1. The user which executes the cron script is not the same
But the scripts runs for say 18Gb and then gives the 'not enough disk
space error'

2. The script depends on something in .bashrc (and .bashrc is NOT
executed automatically before running cron scripts).

same answer as above.

Seems that you don't want to share the script, then please check the
paths defined in the script. The relative paths used in can also be
the cause of the issue.

Don't mind sharing script.

Question is that same script acts differently when tun in console and through
cron?

Just to cross check I have changed time in CRON and right now the script seems
to be working fine. 34 of 38G has been copied till now.

Earlier I was running the script at 11:45 PM in cron. Timing Problem!!??

[snip]

When I schedule it in cron and make it run automatically, FTP upload fails
 with error :

426 Connection closed; Not Enough Disk Space. Aborting..

Are you sure the FTP user accounts being used for uploading the file in both
cases are same ? Also you can try enabling verbose login on your FTP client
and see where/how it is trying to upload ? and also verify the presence of
file at the desired location on FTP server when the cron job to make sure file
is being uploaded at right place.

[snip]

Script is the same, if i run it as root in command prompt it works file, the
same script when I schedule through cron it shows error after uploading say
18GB data. Hence authentication works fine, location is correct etc.

Why is it that it works fine from command prompt and breaks in between with
error when I run the *same* script through cron.

Re: [ilugd] FTP error while running script in cron

2009-11-30 Thread Amit Sharma

Hi,
Some questions...
a) Is the destination directory the same as when you run it from terminal
yes, script is the same

b) How frequently does the cron script run?
Once a week

c) Is the destination actually running out of space?
No, if I run the script as is from commabd prompt, it just runs

d) Are you just adding files or overwriting them?
First deleting the file, then copying it

e) Is the cron job being run as the same user from commandline?
yes it is from root on both , actually from cron it copies says 18GB and then
gives disk full error.

I have facing a strange problem while uploading data file using FTP in cron.

I have made a script to upload 40GB approx tar.gz file to a FTP location.

When I run the script in console, it works fine and uploads the file without

When I schedule it in cron and make it run automatically, FTP upload fails with

Any pointers?

[ilugd] [OT] Quote Unquote

Quote Unquote...

Q: What makes you believe Linux will continue to gain momentum?

A: I think, fundamentally, open source does tend to be more stable
software. It's the right way to do things. I compare it to science
vs. witchcraft. In science, the whole system builds on people looking
at other people's results and building on top of them. In witchcraft,
somebody had a small secret and guarded it -- but never allowed others
to really understand it and build on it.

Traditional software is like witchcraft. In history, witchcraft just
died out. The same will happen in software. When problems get serious
enough, you can't have one person or one company guarding their
secrets. You have to have everybody share in knowledge.

[ilugd] Any Linux Backup Solution for Windows Machines??

2009-04-29 Thread Amit Sharma

Hi,

One of my friend has setup of 2 computers connected to a switch/ hub.

He does DTP work and hence has no other alternative than to use windows
as OS.

From past one week virus has made his life miserable. He got his
machines formatted twice but within a day or two they get infected again
because of the fact that he has to plug in his clients pen drive, CD
etc. for data backup, restore, etc.

He has a external hdd with him.

My Questions:

  1. Can Coreldraw and Pagemaker be used on Linux using Wine? Is it
 successful? What about fonts issue?
  2. Can external HDD or one of the computer to be used in such a way
that atleast the data he backs up say one a week, remains uninfected?
  3. Any other solution?

    Hi

I need some help on iptables if anyone knows about it here.
I have a linux based router and 3 machines (A, B, C) that connect it
to access the internet. I need to selectively route a couple of these
machines through proxy server(s) while keeping the 3rd machine's
connection untouched. I am guessing that I should be able to find an
answer through iptables. Please let me know if someone has done
something like this before. The router has most linux commands and
    tools available on it.

-

Yes the magic of squid and iptables will come into play here.

The following might not be a complete solution but sure enough to get you
started. (I implemented this solution few years back and hence will need to
recall exactly what i did, but this setup worked for sure!)

$iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

$iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp -d your.router.ip.here --dport 80
-j DNAT --to-destination your.proxy.server.ip:80

#routing all port 80 from specific internal ipaddress requests to 3128 (squid
proxy server)

# This will route ALL requests to SQUID
$iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port
3128

# The following will route only the specific traffic to SQUID rest of the
traffic will go DIRECT to internet
$iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 192.168.1.101 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT
--to-port 3128
$iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 192.168.1.102 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT

$iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 192.168.1.103 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT

$iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 192.168.1.104 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT

*A Word on Computer Viruses
*Viruses are, by definition, malicious pieces of code that replicate
themselves. They can do this through a variety of methods, including
infecting  other executable files or disseminating macros and other forms of
executable content.Viruses are most commonly spread by users sharing files,
particularly through email, and also other means. Viruses are well known to
have been causing problems to the Windows users.
But the question remains, Are there any Linux virus? And if yes, should I
worry??? The answer is yes to the first question and no to the second one.
Let me tell you my experience. On my dual boot home PC I primarily work on
Linux partition but ocassionally have to boot into the Windowspartition
(usually to do such works like checking a MS Word document's formatting, a
document that was originally made using Linux/OpenOffice.org Writer and
saved as a MS Wordfile; this is another issue where a user is forced to use
such proprietary software, because a particular agency needs a document in a
proprietary format however).

Coming back to the original issue, I almost always find some new virus that
has infected the Windows partition. These viruses either creap in through
the e-mail or shared folders over the network and mainly through pen drive
now a days.
But I have never had a single incidence of a Linux virus attack in my Linux
box. Though, the fact remains, that viruses for Linux do exist but you can
count them on your finger tips. This article tries to enlist and explain
these known Linux viruses and some of the antivirus software available. *

Known Linux Viruses?*

   - Linux.Kagob
   - Linux.Nuxbee
   - Linux.Satyr

Thanks for this great piece of information.

Re: [ilugd] [Very-old-topic] Distro having best compatibility with MS related products

2009-01-16 Thread Amit Sharma
snipped

So, below are some of the things that are done in the office in a regular
 office.

~Connect to Windows Terminal Server for remote operations
tsclient works well for Microsoft RDP.

~Mail Exchanging (Mail server is MS Exchange) and all other clients are
 Outlook
evolution with evolution-exchange

~Intranet website has issues with Firefox(Well, honestly doesn't work
on
 anything other then IE)
hmm, you are out of luck here.

~Extensive work in Office Suite, full compatibility with MS Office is a
high
 priority.
openoffice works good, if not fully compatible. If you are looking for
commercial support see
http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/features/ooo.html

And some more which I may not be able to recall right now. So, could you
please recommend the best distro which is best for peaceful co-existence
in
 a M$ dominated environment.

Just finished migrating about 150 desktop from M$ to openSUSE. Users simply
loved it and feels comfortable. Few powerusers of MS-Office are not comfortable
with openoffice but rest have no issues at all. In my opinion openSUSE should
be given a try. openSUSE 11.0 with KDE 3.5 is recommended. My recommendation is
based on practical testing of Fedora 10, Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 and openSUSE 11.0
and 11.1 for a average office user.-- amit
