If it is a Intel 845/945, this could be video freezing problem. You

[ilugd] [Commercial] Co-locating with Srijan in Gurgaon

2011-01-20 Thread Anil Kumar Sharma
We're based at Signature Towers in Gurgaon. The office space we currently
(about 2850 sq. ft.) have is much larger than what we require in the current
team. We had a lot of aggressive growth plans, which are shelved. Our Dev+QA
team size is about 25 people. We plan to remain broadly this size only.

The office rental is quite a lot, and therefore we're looking out for
companies who may want to co-locate. Our office can easily accommodate a
team of 15-20 people. We could have a common Admin department.

We're interested in companies with whom we could form a business 'synergy' -
those working in the following domains:

- Social Media Marketing
- Design agencies
- Corporate training
- Content/Technical Writing
- Software Development (Drupal, Rails, Java, Django)

About Srijan

Srijan Technologies is a leading Drupal development company having built
sites like www.openthemagazine.com and www.mnn.com. It works on the entire
stack related to Drupal -
a) Configuration and Development,
b) Performance Tuning
c) Support and Maintenance. It also works on FaceBook apps, and shortly
getting into iPhone and Android development.

I had problems with P4's with intel video on Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 onwards.

If the PC has an intel 945 graphics chipset, the likelihood of the
system freezing with Fedora 12 or Ubuntu 9.10 is very high.

The solution I applied for may parents computer was to use Arch Linux
and downgrade half a dozen packages a year ago. The method was partly
documented - http://sethanil.blogspot.com/2010/01/arch-linux-for-parents.html

Everything but the half a dozen packages on the system are current -
including 2.6.36 kernel on the system.

1. Why not Gnome calculator. It has Advanced, Scientific Financial modes.

In all but the basic mode, it has variables - a,b,c, x, y and z
Current result can be saved in any of the variables.
Using them is easy, just type x + y and the values stored in x y
will be added.

2. KCalc has the common Memory register.

The initrd on installation media is quite generic. You can use that.

If you can boot into the system from an alternate medium, chroot and

From what I have understood, you don't want every machine to download from

 apt-proxy, apt-cacher, apt-cacher-ng, approx

I started with apt-cacher and faced update issues in long term use, so I
moved to approx and was happy with it, but newer version presented a bit
difficulty in the sense that it didn't run its own daemon. So I moved onto
apt-cacher-ng which has been working well for quite some time now.

 Hope it helps.

I have used a simplistic approach by linking /var/cache/apt./archives
to a common NFS mounted directory. Only requirement is that no root
squash option is needed.

It does not even matter which system is updated first as all
subsequent updates find the package in the common cache.

Wouldn't it create difficulty/corruption if two machines are trying to

[ilugd] $98 laptop from China - Industry changer?

2008-09-03 Thread Anil Seth
Hi,

If real, a much better option than the Intel based Netbooks!

http://techvideoblog.com/ifa/98-linux-laptop-the-hivision-mininote/
HiVision makes the worlds cheapest Linux laptop at $98 using a new
cheaper MIPS based processor, WiFi, 1GB flash storage, it runs Linux,
has 3 USB ports, Ethernet, SDHC card reader, audio in and out,
voice-chat, skype, multi-tabbed Firefox browser support and Abiword
for word processing. Automatic and secure online software updates.
Their current model is running a smooth and pretty snappy Linux user
interface. In this video, I got to borrow a review sample of the
laptop overnight, and I try to show you all the browser and other
software interfaces in this extended video review of this cheap MIPS
based laptop. Embedded is the way that I hope that most cheap laptops
are going to be based on in the near future, Google will hopefully
make a great Chrome browser for this kind of Laptop and hopefully that
OLPC soon will announce that they will work to improve Embedded Linux
based laptops in the upcoming XO-1.5 and XO-2 designs.

The policy seems to have some really good points like-
5.1) Mandatory Characteristics:
5.1.1)Selected Standard should be Royalty Free for life time of the standard.
5.1.2)Selected Standard should be developed in a collaborative and consensus

5.1.3)Selected Standard should be recursively open; They shall not use

 dear all,

 i spotted a linux-based asus eeepc 4gb with a 7 screen at a gadget
shop, in a mall in delhi. they allowed me to fiddle around with it. am
quite impressed with the machine: what a beautiful and elegant
interface to linux, even newbies to computers and the internet can use
it. this netbook is easier to use than win or mac, thanks to the
 interface.
 does anyone own one yet?

does it easily configure and use roaming internet access via a
usb-dongle from tataindicom or reliance or other mobile net ISPs?

fyi, they were selling it at rs 18,000 all inclusive, but the US
retail street price is obviously less. what are the prices you've
 discovered here?

it's wi-fi is quite impressive, good at catching weak signals, which
other wi-fi devices could not catch in the same vicinity.
am considering buying one for myself, for just regular netbooking.
 what do you say?

 niyam

I have had one for 3 months and like it very much.
Primarily used for browsing and entertainment

I use Tata Telecom for USB browsing - not very often. Performance was
quite satisfactory in Mumbai(Mahim) but not so good in Chandigarh.

Here is the problem:

On HDFC's home page, under Login to your account, Selecting
NetSafe/Verified by Visa/MasterCard SecureCode and choosing to
Register, pops up a window warning that Cookies are Disabled.
Clicking on 'Click here' works with Opera (masked as IE) however with
Firefox 2 on Fedora 8, it gives the error:

Only Internet Explorer with version 5.0 or above and Firefox with
Version 1.5 or above are Supported.

Once I have registered, I have been able to use my credit card with

Incidentally, SecureCode should make online use of Credit Card safer.

   Hi,
I was not able to access netbanking on ABN Amro Bank's website
using Firefox on Ubuntu.
When I wrote to them, this is the reply I got:-
   Dear Mr. Jagannath,

I got the same stupid response. However, the site works if you give
the following url(at least till now):

https://netbanking.abnamro.co.in/BANKAWAY?Action.RetUser.Init.001=YAppSignonBankId=ABNAppType=corporate

This has finally motivated me into closing this account - online if
possible otherwise the next time I am in Delhi.

Incidentally, I had an unfortunate irritant with HDFC as well - for
credit card security code. But they were much more sympathetic though
I had to use Opera with Mask as IE option to actually register the
 security code.

Opera in Mask as IE has worked for several other banks but not for
Bank of India and it did not work for the ABN AMRO's home page either.

I am worried about the security practices of our financial
institutions. I registered for online access to a mutual fund. They
asked for a password, security question, etc... and warned me to to
keep it confidential. The idiots emailed my password to me! Which
seems to imply that they are probably storing the password in clear
text! I am waiting for their feedback to my concern.

Niyam,
Very good thoughts. At present I want to just give my comments.
I think Budhism needs to be studied more carefully than it is normally.
I am not a Buddist but have some idea. The Kshanikwad and why there
is misary in the world is very well explained in Buddism. Redistribution of
wealth
does not solve problem of poverty. It was done 4 times by a king of Tibet
and wealth concentrated again due to system. It needs deep study of social,
political and economic understanding and deeper understanding of the forces
operating
in a particular society and a solution thereof.

a) bill has no choice but to defecate his billions. he can't digest it
all in this life. he can't take it with him to his grave. he can't
give it to his children and devastate them. too much wealth can
sometimes be a dreadful burden.

b) he's taking the most measured approach yet in recorded history, to
bring principles of capitalism to charity.

c) gautam buddha, mahavir, and a few saints who thought hard about the
inequality of wealth always found an easy way to equality: donate
wealth and become poor themselves. alas, all the wealth given away
through thousands of years by hundreds of wealthy people has not
eradicated poverty. yet. it has only made the wealthy poor by their
own choice, and helped quite a few assuage their 'money guilt' perhaps
because, as mario puzo once said 'behind every fortune there is a
crime.'

d) bill is trying hard 'to do the right thing.'

e) he has studied the problems with charity, the inefficiencies and
even corruption that entwines charity, especially in poverty-stricken
countries run by despots, and is trying to offer a working solution.

f) the key difference in society today is that before the birth of the
software industry, and the industrial revolution, the wealth an
individual could generate was directly related to his or her efforts,
through products and services. the industrial revolution changed this
equation. the business models of intangible economies has created the
huge imbalance of wealth evident with microsoft, and even warren
buffet.

could carry on with this topic, as it is quite fascinating and somehow
we all always knew that a day will come when this wealth will have to
be given away.

as krishna explains in the bhagwad-gita: no person can own wealth and
riches. at best, a person can only be its guard and caretaker
(chowkidaar) maximum for a complete lifetime. then it has to be given
away or will be snatched away, or bequeathed away.

the ownership of wealth is an illusion.
if you could really own it, you could take it with you beyond your grave.

rather than just give it away, bill is trying to use it save a life,
find solutions to real problems that cause, sustain, and even
aggravate poverty. that's his new measure of wealth. a new proposed
variable for measuring the wealth of the wealthy.

from 'where do you want to go today?' to 'what problem of humanity do
you want to try to solve today?'

good to discuss this as an precursor to freed.in and would be an
interesting read.

The point to consider here is wheter a laptop in the hands of an uneducated
poor child is going to significantly alter his life.
will it prevent him from dropping out of school or help him get a college
  degree.
We are talking about OLPC serving this purpose in two ways.
Children getting used to technology, especially *free* technology.
Now is technology helps a person get a degree or stop him from drop is
 a different question.
But Technology does help bring a refreshing change to the way
 education is delivered.

It is likely to reduce the dependence on teachers given/assuming that
there is a shortage of qualified teachers.

Regarding the cost, it may even be a less expensive option than
providing adequate number of qualified teachers, classrooms and
printed text books for all children who should be in a classroom.

can someone define ..following.

However, if we count people who are worthy of being called

Not a low paid job at all !

What is this worth ?? Is this anything different from following ??( what
i am doing ..)

An administrator who takes care of all WAN/ Managed Switched LAN,In
house DNS, Router based Firewalls,Router based IP accounting, Internet
Traffic monitoring thru MRTG, Linux- sendmail, Antispam on Sendmail and
on SMTP Gateway, anti virus, Squid proxy with authentication, logging
and web based reporting, CISCO VPN , Linux Intranet with search
facility; Solaris - ASIC design tools with solaris, linux and windows
client environment; Solaris - NIS, NFS with automount, ASIC tools on
Linux servers, VSS, CVS, Web email thru squirrelmail, Majordomo lists
and management by users using majorcool web interface, Linux IMAP, LDAP,
back up and DR plans implementation..
not to mention the routine SA jobs.. user management.. etc..

What could be the worth of such a person with above skills after 5 years
??

Reason why i am asking is that before i switched to SA 5 years back from
hardware board design.. my career graph was exponential and it just got
flat since 5 years.. when i entered SA 5 years back.. i did not know
what an NT system was.. and 2 years back i had no idea of linux..but
still could implement above..

now do not advise me to change the company..i would have done that long
back if i wanted..

and the people who i was guiding 5 years back in hardware designing have
tripled their salaries in ASIC/ embeded..and are one position above my
level in SA.. and now i am thinking of going back to ASIC now..

i am telling all this in support of my belief that there is much more
money in technology development than in SA..at least that is what the
management says..

any comments ??

These days one does not need a technical degree to be in sys admin.. and

However if you are planning to settle abroad then it is a good choice..

Re: ATTENTION: Re: [ilugd] COMMERCIAL::System Administrator(level 1) -Urgent

2004-10-26 Thread anil bindal
Well..

What you say is also correct but i was talking in relative terms. e.g.
same no. of experience in embeded could fetch double the salary.. and
with due respect to our sys admin. profession.. IIT grads. would be more
useful in designing more technical stuff like DSP / FPGA etc.. They
would be more apted to work on Wireless/ embdeded technologies ... than
doing all those kind of routine sys admin work...

Working in technologies development would always be highest paid,
non-redundant..and highly skilled jobs..Increments for the Sys admin
would always be lower as compared to development engineers... it is
market economics .. demand and supply type..

Like in Embeded and in ASIC.. it is not unusual to get 5+ lacs above
after 3 years of experience.. and it would continue to double every 3-4
years or so..

BTW I am curious to know as to what is the average salary for Indian sys
admins in say any MNC for following no. of year's experience.. ( assume
that guy has required skills )

1-2 yrs
3-5 yrs
6-8 yrs
10 yrs
10+ yrs

Is there any salary survey for Indian IT guys.. ?

I consider big money as 10-12 lacs p.a. for a 8-9 years experience
engineering graduate..which is possible these days in Technology
development areas..

However if you are planning to settle abroad then it is a good choice..

Systems admin is no way a low paid job.

Thankless yes, but a sysadmin is backbone of IT deptt of any company. As
a human tendency people care more about their face or hands than their
backbone, so nothing unusual in that.

A good sysadmin requires good understanding of OS internal, networking

and yes there is big money here also.

I wish i could implement suggestions..

Problem is on the user's PC , there are many profiles ( for different
emails boxes ) open. All profiles use the same SMTP server . So we need
to restrict only one profile from sending the external emails..( even
this profile should be able to send the email to local domain users )

Secondly, we want to restrict attachment size only for a particular
user.

Sending mails directly to the backup MXs, instead of the primary one, is
a very popular way amongst spammers to avoid spam detection. The gist is
that they know that this is a very common setup - primary MX has spam
filtering and the backup MXs don't and, frequently, the primary MX
accepts mails from the backup MXs blindly, i.e. they trust the backup
MXs and don't filter mails from the backup MXs. Also, backup MXs
generally don't check for the existence of user accounts [unless you
have call forwards enabled] or quota limitations, so they accept any/all
 mails for a domain blindly.

Spammers exploit this setup and send mails directly to the backup MXs.

Solution: Run spam/anti-virus filtering on all publically exposed MXs.

I understand the concept of spamming via direct to mx mailing, but what i wanted
to point out was that for an end user, you fail (using ISP OR any III party SMTP
server) in case the opposite domain runs a reverse DNS on you.
My point wasn't related to the original post, I was just trying to figure out
the drawbacks of using some other SMTP server other than justifiably your own
(the one indicated by your MX record).
Yeah, i think it was everybody's dream that each SMTP server be able to relay
for everybody, but then we had spam. And it would be a better idea to stick to
your own (MX) servers for relaying your mail. If this were strictly followed
along with reverse DNS lookup, there'd be less spamming (not perfecty zero
though). This, along with what you mentioned about the SMTP server being able to
detect bulk mailings, we could achieve good sterilisation.
Though this may not always be possible, logistics or otherwise, then, as Mary
pointed out in another thread (or was it this thread), the use of spf records.
They would surely be a good step in fighting spam.
Also, i feel every self respecting SMTP server should run a reverse DNS and make
use of RBL lists till there is definitive way to fight spam.

I would like to upgrade sendmail to 8.12.10 keeping all other packages
same..

Is it possible ?? i want to use only the rpm for sendmail 8.12.10

If i browse security and errata pages for RH, i find that for RH 7.3 the
version is only 8.11.6-27.73..so the doubt...

Is that your ISP's mail server or your own?

If it is your own mailserver, do you have DNS running for the machines in your
internal lan which send mails through this mail server?

Do you have host lookups turned on for your mail server?

Re: [ilugd] Sendmail multiple recipients delivery failure

2004-04-20 Thread anil bindal
Hello Amit,

It did not help.

Actually what we want is that if for any reason some types a wrong local
email ID along with other valid email IDs, mail should be delivered to
valid IDs and there should be a non-delivery POP up for invalid ID.

This is how it used to happen in Exchange server..

I guess Sandip Bhattacharya also faced similar problem but am not sure
if the problem was solved..

   Dear All,

Can anybody, pls let me know where I can get the
   transaction processing performance statistics in
   a clustered linux server configuration?

The statistics required are such that performance
data is gathered based the timeline when a new box
   is added.

   I've some info from www.ameinfo.com

But this data is not sufficient for a clustered unit
where the system has more than 8 boxes supporting the
   application.

The application can be assumed to be supported by Oracle
   at backend.

   Regds,
   Mukesh

  Hi All,
I am stuck with a strange problemin sendmail
I m trying to send mail on internet using sendmail

Also m able to telnet the relay server from my m/c at port 25
Also the netstat shows like this
  tcp0 0 *:smtp *:*
  LISTEN

but when I try sending mail to anywhere outside say abc.com it says
  connecting to abc.com via esmtp
and then says no route to host
even a mail to the mail relay server domain says the same

Is there anyone who has configured sendmail earlier and can help me in

  Hi PG
Cyber oam is not a freeware exactly It is a professional software Copy
Rights with
24 Online.com This company provides such softwares for corporates and
cable ISP's so if you are impressed by the product quality you have to pay
them rs 40,000 for installation and Rs 75,000 appx for support.
If you are looking for such software you can mail me your requirements and
we can give you much cheaper option.
