[ilugd] SSH exchange identification failing

2011-07-25 Thread Shamail

Hi,

Untill yesterday, I was able to push/pull from remote repositories
over SSH. But not anymore..

[shamail@busybox imageomator]$ git push production production
ssh_exchange_identification: read: Connection reset by peer
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly

Although, I can successfully log in to the server via SSH.

But the disturbing this is in /var/log/auth.log
Jul 25 22:27:51 localhost sshd[3018]: reverse mapping checking
getaddrinfo for abts-north-dynamic-218.254.161.122.airtelbroadband.in
[122.161.254.218] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT!

This came up for git push, but for SSH it says
Jul 25 22:27:51 localhost sshd[3018]: Accepted publickey for shamail
from 122.161.254.218 port 55063 ssh2
Jul 25 22:27:51 localhost sshd[3018]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session
opened for user shamail by (uid=0)

Googling suggested to put UseDNS = no in sshd_config - no use :(

Please help if someone has some pointers..

Re: [ilugd] [OT] Best pre-paid 3G option in Delhi

requirement is sporadic, and I don't want to have to keep paying the
telco every month regardless of whether I use the service or not.

On a related note, anyone suggest an el cheapo mobile phone with 3G,
Bluetooth and decent battery life that one can use as a modem with
Linux? My Nokia 5800 does all that, but (a) it's not el cheapo, (b) I'm

-- Raj

Hi,

So I have tried almost all the 3G providers before settling to Reliance.
Here are my observations:

(All the speeds are for my home (1st floor, open area), your speeds will
vary, I'll recommend to go with the one whose tower is nearest to your
house)

(All tests under prepaid, although it shouldn't matter)

1) Airtel: Very unreliable 3G billing. I don't understand how they
charged me for 4,800 MB of data usage in 1 and half day. :( (dropped it
then and there)

Goods: Nice coverage, low connection drops.
Bads: No good plans (infact the worst).
Speed (on 7.2 Mbps beetle data card): approx 2.4 (as reported by speedtest)

2) Vodafone: I liked vodafone guys from always, but not with 3G.
Goods: Nothing special.
Bads: bad speed (1.2Mbps), connection drops after every 20 mins or so,
costliest.

3) MTNL: I was happy to find 1650 unlimited plan in MTNL, but when I
tested it, it was awful.

Good: Has unlimited plan (750/- if you pay 6 month upfront), cheapest.
Bads: Most of the time I can't connect or can't see HSPA, network is
HSPA only, not HSDPA thereby a max rated speed of 3.6Mbps.

Speed: less than 1Mbps most of the time and sometimes worse.

4) Reliance: The most stable of what I've seen till now.
Good: Almost 0 connection drop (atleast my locality, most of the time
connection made in the morning lasts till I shut down the PC at night),
Best download speed seen among all. I usually see download speed going
beyond 600Kbps via browser (=4.8 Mbps).

Bads: No unlimited plan.
Speed: Most of the time its between 3-3.5 Mbps on speedtest.net

My suggestion:
I think there are lot of options to choose from, but go for the one
which has the best coverage at your home, outside all are same..

Most of the Android phones has wifi tethering, but it sounds dirty. Get
a data card from nehru place for 1800 bucks. It'll be lot more convenient.
Btw, using internet from a 3G phone and bridging it via bluetooth will
almost waste the experience because channel bandwidth is 128KBps in most
of the cell phones (bluethooth v 1.2).

Might be, site uses Django, python, jquery and more OSS libraries,

My apologies if you thought it was for marketing reasons.. Its not

How about making this atleast marginally FOSS related by telling us
something about the technical details of the implementation, so that
it will help others using FOSS for web development. What are the FOSS
components you are using and why? Where is the site hosted, what are
the memory / processor requirements, and would you recommend that
host? How many people in your team? How much development time? What's
the business model here? Anything else you might think is relevant :)

-- Anupam

Hi,

Yes sure.. So this one is basically built completely upon free
software. I being a fan of OSS opted for choosing things that minimize
the cost.

It uses Django with a lot of third-party supporting libraries (like
boto, twitter, oauth, eyeD3, titlecase, pyquery, mad, PIL to name a
few), primarily for all the controllers that you see..

A little into for newbies in Django:
Dango is an MTV(Model, Template, Viewer) framework that lets you
separate your business logic with HTML/CSS as well as the data models.
Having said that, it follows DRY (Don't repeat yourself) principles. As
a result, the complete python code for this site is under 2000 lines.
For those familiar with rails, its pretty much like rails. (Check out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLUS00QrYWw )

My initial thoughts to cook this up were 2 only, rails or django. As I
am quite much comfortable in python, the choice became obvious. Rails
demanded one month before I can start the project on, though I was very
curious to learn it.. (might be next time). They say, rails have a very
vibrant community, but now I can very well say, Django is equally good.
http://groups.google.com/group/django-users supported me a lot.

Further I am using MySQL for the DB layer. I earlier planned MongoDB for
this, but then I thought it'll fall under the category of premature
optimization so dropped the plan.

MySQL everyone know, for MongoDB (http://www.mongodb.org/):
MongoDB is a no-sql database which offers features like
auto-shrading, map/reduce, gridFS. Its very fast, supports replication,
and good thing is, its free! If you want to use it with Django, you
might want to consult pymongo (python driver for MongoDB) and
mongoengine. A Django like ORM for Mongo. Definitely if you are looking
forward to a good scalable solution right from the start, give a shot to
Mongo, There might be something good waiting out there for you. I am
using this in another project and very happy with it.
Apart from this, other good nosql DB that you might want to try is
Apache Cassendra which is Java based. But APIs are available for almost
all the languages.

For playing music and multimedia related stuff, the site uses a 1x1px
FLEX applet hidden in the page.
Flex is an open source SDK for building flash movies and better
suited for development rather designing.

I am running this currently on Joyent cloud (reason: they give you 10TB
free bandwidth each month), because this is bandwidth hungry, I couldn't
afford Amazon ($0.10 per GB).

The system has 256MB of RAM, a processor giving me a performance of
1.5GHz single core kinda. So its very short in resources. So for this, I
opted out of apache, switched to lighttpd, using Django over fastcgi
running in multithreaded mode instead of prefork mode. The server uses
Ubuntu 10.10 server (reason: I was most familiar with this, although
they say, CentOS is a wiser choice for server, but ubuntu never let me
down.)

Guess what, its working for me and I am still expecting some real good
traffic on this very server in $16.

For those unaware: Lighttpd is a light-weight web server with very low
memory footprint. It can serve almost all the frameworks under the hood,
via FastCGI (Have found this good with Django, Rails and PHP)

So for a server like above, you might want to try a benchmark with
Lighty. One good thing about Lighty is that, its configuration file's
grammar is very cool.

Afa recommending a host is concerned, yes Joyent is giving me good
performance. Choosing joyent was the matter of:

* Cost, $16.
* They accepted my Indian Bank master debit card for this :) - god knows
how! Although, lately I got to know

[ilugd] Reliance netconnect always in Broadband+ mode

2010-06-28 Thread Shamail Tayyab
Hi,

I recently got reliance netconnect+, now the problem is (what I think), I
have a couple of base stations near my home, one one which supports
Broadband+ mode and the other one doesn't (works in 1x mode only). I could
think so because in one room, the dialer shows Broadband+ mode and speeds
are good, while in the other room, it shows 1x and speed is very poor. But
in the later case/room, if I manually tell the dialer to use Broadband+
mode, it works like charm.

The problem is, the dialer is for Windows and on Linux it selects network
automatically and most of the times I see speeds like 1x network only.

Is there are way to tell Linux that, Oh dear stupid modem, there is another
network available that you can use rather than using this dumb network?

With best regards

 What's the price of  Netgear WG111v3 ?

850-900 Rs for both USB and PCI at most of the shops at local Nehru Place.

Plus you can make this a router as well, but works only in ADHOC mode
only. That means only 1 client can connect afa I think.

Why don't you quit all those tricks and get a full fledge router
instead which will cost you 1400(Netgear), unless curiosity is what
you are looking for?

Try the following these things.

1. Figure out packets are flowing.. ping google.com

If this works:
Check if in your browser any proxy address is not left specified by
some means. If not i believe you can browse net.
Else:
Ping your DNS server or 74.125.67.100(one of google IP)
  if this works:
means your DNS is not resolving names, put nameserver
208.67.222.222 in /etc/resolv.conf to use openDNS
  else:
you have some problem somewhere else. Try Roshan's hack and revert.

Well to install VLC, do set up livna repository first (one time process)

Open terminal, and run this command

su -c rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release.rpm;

This will prompt the root password, punch in and allow it to finish.

From now onwards whatever you want to install and is available at yum
repo and/or livna repo do:
yum install package

e.g to install vlc
yum install vlc

Install other things like
yum install mplayer gmplayer xine

A good complete guide that covers SQL and embedding queries in C/C++ can

Re: [ilugd] Disaster recovery

2009-09-08 Thread Shamail Tayyab

Can anyone tell me how to take Disaster Recovery in RHEL 5.
Please send any kind of tip or proccess.

Hello,
Disaster is a general term that, at server management end, is
presumably used mostly for backup and preparing yourself to get through
an untoward incident if possibly occur. Most of the GNU/Linux systems,
including RHEL 5, offers same tools for that (except few, and usage may
differ).

To get started, lets consider you have in mind, natural calamities,
physical damage to the server, system failure, and external attacks.

SYSTEM FAILURE:
   * This problem can be addressed by using distributed approach. You
can follow this guide to set up a cluster
http://www.ram.org/computing/linux/linux_cluster.html
   * Say you have 10 servers, then if 1 goes down, 9 will get slightly
more load but the whole system won't go down.

EXTERNAL ATTACKS:
   * External attacks can be of kind, Active attacks(like flooding,
cracking etc) and passive attacks(like SQLInjection etc). All of them
has different approach for prevention.
   * You may want to use some firewall like Shorewall etc to prevent
yourself from Active attacks, and use a robust server application that
handles passive attacks at runtime.
   * Apart from that, viruses worms etc also appear that may creep into
your data, but since you are running RHEL its most likely secure, still
its not a dead sure!

PHYSICAL DAMAGE:
   * Physical damage can be as funny as, someone cut the power cable to
someone completely broken the server so as to take an old revenge ;-)
   * For this you may want to keep the server in a secure location and
away from the reach of your enemies. :D

NATURAL CALAMITIES:
   * Like earthquake, floods, tsunami!!! Then its the RAID that comes
into picture. Create a complete mirror of your server at a completely
different geolocation. This minimizes the chance as natural calamities

Re: [ilugd] Linux command-line introduction

2009-06-24 Thread Shamail Tayyab

p.s- There's a reason all newbie Linux tutorials suck. They're
written by beginners themselves. Experts can't be bothered to write
one. Yes, it's a problem; but I see no solution ahead until people
stop writing `cookbooks' of new Linux commands.

Well, it seems you are quite interested in writing a good tutorial, that
supposingly bring the so called GAP between CLI and GUI closer...
We would presumably think that these are your personal opinions and we truly
respect the work by the writer, atleast even if we consider(which is not so)
that examples are bad, they tell the usage and some good mischiefs of command
line.

Re: [ilugd] Any Linux Backup Solution for Windows Machines??

2009-04-29 Thread Shamail Tayyab

Amit Sharma wrote:

Hi,

One of my friend has setup of 2 computers connected to a switch/ hub.

He does DTP work and hence has no other alternative than to use
windows as OS.

From past one week virus has made his life miserable. He got his
machines formatted twice but within a day or two they get infected
again because of the fact that he has to plug in his clients pen
drive, CD etc. for data backup, restore, etc.

He has a external hdd with him.

My Questions:

  1. Can Coreldraw and Pagemaker be used on Linux using Wine? Is it
 successful? What about fonts issue?
Yes, version 7.0 of pagemaker and version 10 of Coreldraw are know to
work and has got a bronze and gold rating respectively.

See appdb.winehq.org.
But this method won't help much, as the person is in DTP work, at one or
the other level he will face problems in emulation.

  2. Can external HDD or one of the computer to be used in such a way
that atleast the data he backs up say one a week, remains
uninfected?

  3. Any other solution?

Yes again for 2 and 3.
Here is a method that i suggest, Use some software like Norton Ghost or
its free alternative like PING (PartImage is not Ghost, is a live linux
ISO that can be used as backup tool and emergency recovery).
*1. Making Windows to recover instantly:* Install a copy of Windows with
all the softwares, and keep a freezed image of this OS for emergency
recovery. It takes about 5-7 mins to recover entire OS to the freezed state.
Also if you can purchase, there is a software called as deep freeze
that returns the system to its freezed state at every reboot. Undoing
all the changes done to the system. That is one of the good software for
systems with high virus infection risks. Files and folders can be
configured to be saved and not to be undone at reboot.
*2. Making files and folders safe:* On the second machine install some
version of GNU/Linux and with the prevailing network mount a Samba share
of Windows in RW mode on the Linux system. DO NOT put pen drives on the
windows machine, rather use Linux for this and manually copy the desired
files from the clients drive to the Windows machine using the mounted share.
This will eleminate about 90% of viruses and malwares being spreaded
by autorun method.
*3. Using the External media as safe storage:* This can be done manually
since now the system is not much prone to virus or using some automated
backup tools like amanda. Configure Amanda to backup the windows machine
over network using samba sharing.

P.S In any case use some good antivirus software and keep it updated.

amit

First identify the node in /dev where the device is plugged.
For this, do

Perform a diff as

This is your device that you will use for further references.

Now write this in /etc/wvdial.conf

Anybody else received such a mail?

Try to open the mail attachment in an isolated environment. As in a

Re: [ilugd] Internal-External HDD: Possible ?

2008-10-19 Thread Shamail Tayyab

If you don't want an extra power supply probably because it'd be too
cumbersome to carry around, then you can purchase a laptop hard disk
along with its case. The case will cost 150-300 INR approx.

This is really a better option, i, myself is using the one, a 250G external
with a carry case and AC adapter, its really difficult to carry and manage,
Laptop hard disk with an external casing are USB powered and small, so are
easily manageable.
Also look around for Solid State hard drives if you are not in mood to carry
a lots of multimedia stuff with you, as they are small sized, in both size and
capacity but really fast as compared with SATA and PATA. Uptill now you'll get
16 GB or a maximum of 32 GB with a price tag of approximately 3K and 5K
respectively. External one is approximately of the size of Home Lite Match
Box, slightly bigger than normal match boxex. An added advantage is that they
don't have any rotating part in them and are USB powered, and therefore resist
shocks and crashes. A + for a good external hard drive.

Here i would like to add that Reliance's Wimax is not a mobile one. It
has got an antenna, just like a 14 LCD, and has a wire which connects
to the PC(router actually). The antenna needs special alignment with the
tower that is done by the installation person. So you cannot take it
anywhere.
Rest look for data cards. They are compatible with linux with some

configured to dial to the ISP.

I think the BSNL is the best option to choose; here is an un official
site for bsnl data card : http://bsnldatacard.com/

I use standard nokia GPRS based mobile phone to access internet,
over Idea Delhi connection.. they provide it at a rate of 5Rs/day

than 8. But hell with their response time, check out this..

That means you're trying to send some sort of attachment or an HTML-only

Re: [ilugd] ubuntu feisty linux to nokia E61i bluetooth

2007-11-25 Thread Shamail Tayyab
 object exchange.

pair the device.. the easiest way is to start
# bluetooth-applet
and initiate pairing from the phone. Set the PC as authorized(just a personal
opinion) in the phone. This way you dont need to use bluez-pin for pairing,
neither you need to edit /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf

Now to send a file to a phone.. use
# obexftp -b my_ph -B 12 -c dir -l
# obexftp -b my_ph -B 12 -c dir -p file
# obexftp -u 1 -c dir -p file

Description:
IPv6 address of the phone.
12 = channel as discovered by the sdptool
-c changes to directory
C:/ = phone mem of the phone
E:/ = mem card of the phone
-l lists the contents, gives an xml to stdout
-p puts a local file file
-u lists the usb interfaces available, -u 1 uses the first usb dev attached.

example:
to put a file myMp3.mp3 in the sounds section of phone over bluetooth:
#obexftp -b my_ph -b 12 -c E:/Sounds/Digital -p myMp3.mp3
Same using usb cable
#obexftp -u 1 -c E:/Sounds/Digital -p myMp3.mp3

read man obexftp
// quite descriptive

/* The reason of the halting of transfer with kbluetooth may be that it is
trying to send the file using object push, and not object exchange (rem they
are both available at different channels, so use it correctly, object push
doesn't support transfer directly in memory card, file will go to the phones
inbox. However no harm to phone will get caused if you will use the wrong
channel. This is the reason of most of your problems. Right click - send via
bluetooth worked because it used object push method... and in this mode phone
recieves the file in the inbox, and does the job without even pairing. (Notice
that you must have recieved the file in the inbox). There is a tool called
obexpush that does the job for computer, or specifying the right channel in
obexftp.*/

Next this all can be mounted as a filesystem using either of obexfs or
p3nfs(better as i suggest)
obexfs uses obexftp and fuse to mount it as filesystem
where as p3nfs uses a small nfs server at phone part which is then mounted as a
nfs share.

oh! small error there. airtel internet on gsm phone works on prepaid
cards too. am using it. that said, even with GPRS over EDGE, the
connectivity is fickle. after a few sessions discovered that either it
works straight away on connect, or just stands still on connect. if
the latter happens, just disconnect and try again. a few minutes into
the connection it may slow down again. so disconnect and try again.
 sigh!

As far as i know, Airtel is not known for providing internet on prepaid, they
have a plan for full unlimited internet on postpaid costing around 450 per
month. Same with vodafone is 199 per month but with additional 5p per 10 kb
data charge but supporting both prepaid and postpaid. Then !dea has a brilliant
plan of 5 Rs per day daily rental unlimited internet plan. Another is a zero
rental plan costing 2p per kb (to try out, the access pt name is internet)
in contrast, WLAN rocks. have got into the habit of strolling or
walking around while the phone seeks WLAN connections, and am startled
to find WI-FI waves almost everywhere, although almost all are secured
 and encrypted.
Yes obviously wlan provides much much better speeds. But WI-FI goes down as you
step out of delhi, in trains roads etc... So?

the cafecoffeeday around the corner offers wi-fi for patrons, at a
steep cost of rs 90 for 90 minutes, valid for 48 hours, and was happy
to note they offer full support and service for 'Linux'. including
mentioning command-line instructions on how to connect your gnuLinux
laptop to their service. anybody tried it yet? how's the speed and
 service?
Really those guys give such service! Brilliant! If the speed is good then i
think the cost is also okay...

service.. he he. So they must have removed because of inactivity. Actually
tough time going these days, so haven't worked on it from almost last two
months. But anyways thaks for making me aware.. I'll do something..

[ilugd] Cant send mails using SMTP...

2007-11-25 Thread Shamail Tayyab
Hi,
I got this problem just a day before, before that everything was going ok.
I am using an email id shamail [at] inbox.com, subscribed on iLugD with this
one.
I have one more gmail's is pleomax00 [at] gmail.com

Now, i have added the first one as another email address in the gmail settings.
Then, i've configured my ice dove to recieve emails from both. And to send
emails using the SMTP server of gmail i.e pop.gmail.com

Till 2 days before, i was able to send mails to both iLugD and Debian users
list using these settings... But not now.
From iLugD i got a bounded mail with these contents..

The message's content type was not explicitly allowed

Further, i changed my smtp server to use its own server i.e my.inbox.com
This also doesn't worked. Had there been a problem with gmail's SMTP, this
should work...

But the mails are going from web-mail..

What to do?

Regards

I have never had to configure glx to do anything special. What
exactly did you have to do? And what is a 3D desktop client?

I did have t configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf, with help from

It seems that i am not that skilled as much as you are, though i think i can
answer all the queries, and still can prove my point!
Let me go particular...
Firstly, i was talking in general, what an average human being thinks...

With 3D desktop i meant compiz, beryl, fusion etc. (now please dont say, i
should have said compiz fusion)
in deb, one needs to edit xorg.conf to add glx in the module section...
leave it
let dexconf do it... all of us know you consider it normal... you consider,
not a newbie. This is your personal opinion about gnome or kde, but it
doesn't counts in user-friendliness - our actual point of discussion

need to edit ALSA configuration to have my system defaults its sound

I do not understand what defaulting sound to software mixer
means. I made sure that my kernel had my sound driver compiled as a
module, and it all worked. Even the buttons on the outside of the
laptop work, and are supported by Xorg.

Have you experienced something like, changing of volume doesn't function?
This happens because in many cases, hardware volume mixer doesn't work, the
best solution is to keep aside the hardware, and control the volume using
software mixer... ubuntu defaults to it. Means in every case, either your
card is being rendered properly or not, volume control will work for sure.
Try Intel 915 on debian and change PCM level... you'll realize.
Manually, for this one has to write a plugin like this...

I am using the Dell Precision M90 laptop with intel HD audio.

I need to install everything in text mode. (does anyone think a
novice user had a dream the night before he installed debain, to give
  installgui at the boot prompt)

Well, the novice user would, if they had read the instructions.
I am not sure I have much sympathy for people who can't read the
  installation instructions.

Secondly, I have no idea why X is so much better than the curses
based install; I prefer the curses, personally, since it is faster. And
I was able to install a fully encrypted partition, with LVM on top,
  entirely from the install.

Again you are giving your personal opinion, I have no idea Why do
you think others have to do anything with your idea?? Do you think they
don't have brains to form their opinion about curses and X?

And, despite it all being encrypted -- it suspends to ram, and
suspends to disk, all by itself.

Try doing a fully encrypted (all but boot -- and yes, the swap
is encrypted, and still resume works) in either Fedora or Ubuntu. User
  friendly, my foot.

Had you used a bit better way of talking on a such a big mailing list, where
you are representing yourselves among more than 6000 people, i'ld have been
much interested in answering this as well.
Really, this was not expected... from a person like you. I've seen your
profile. So my dear friend... keep your calm. This is not a battle field.

I myself need to edit sources.list, defaults to an empty file
in debian to get aptitude working.

This happens not to be the case. D-I creates an sources.list.

Please tell me what D-I is? In my case, i've got an empty file after
install.

Its the end of 2007, and i still log in for the first time in the
traditional old gnome theme. Same with other desktop environments.

Thankfully, Debian allows me _not_ to log into either GNOME or
KDE. And configuring themes is an easy, one time thing; giving me the
choices I want is far more user friendly than going for eye candy by
default. Are GNIOME themese so very hard to change? I was assured that
changing themes is easy -- in which case, what does it matter what the
  initial theme is?

Yes, this matters... means debi is good that they provide no theme, and rest

OK, so that is pretty conclusive that the problem lies elsewhere
in the system than your config files. Looking to modules, You said:

Even i think problem lies somewhere else!
Here is a possible solution at me...
Check for the file ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asoundrc
This file (local and global resp) is the plugin file for ALSA, where the
default output device the default mixer etc are specified. If this is the
culprit then such errors are seen.
If this is there then checkout what is the default outpit plugin... (easy to
do it, just by reading the file). If it is something else then hw:0 or PCM
then make it so (google for that)
If not then, why not try installing the latest version of alsa, it will
automatically fix any errors. This way you will get added features as well.

Hope it will help.

Hi!
Yesterday itself i came across this piece! Yes at 32K (its nt 34, 33 on
credit card nd 32 on cash) its awesome, with great features and cool looks.
I first installed windows on it, nd checked its capabilities.
Processor(AMD X2 dual core) is fast enough to see some really quick driver
installation
At one GB RAM, i cant spot any sort of slowness.
Screen is quite bright with almost 179 degree viewing angle.
Keypad is white, so u have to take some extra care, because on the very day
of opening the box, u'll realize that its catching dirt quickly.
Camera is just a moderate one, no extra ordinary stuff there.
The card reader reads my MMC card just perfectly, but i think that it is
only an MMC card reader, may be SD using clip.
The touchpad is moderately good, with no scroller by the side.
160 GB HDD is cool enough to carry most of the things around.
Dont know with other lappy's but this DVD RAM drive was making ching ching
while operating.
Speakers are sounding good, but not as good as one of mine!
Bluetooth is quite good, nd detected my Desktop, kept around 30 m away nd
that too not in the line-of-sight

Then i installed ubuntu fiesty fawn on it, to get this result
Bluetooth - working
Wifi - i dont have wifi setup at home, so din even bothered to check the
device auto detection.
Camera - not detected
Touchpad, ethernet, battery - working perfectly
Card Reader - din tried, but i thought, while bootin, i've seen something
like mass storage support initialized - so should be working by default
Sound working
NVIDIA drivers -- u have to install seperately

In short, you won't face any difficulty in installing most of the linux
distros.
And as i'ld suggest its worth buying at such price.

[ilugd] Midlets using proxy

2007-10-26 Thread Shamail Tayyab
Hi,
I've got a s60 based phone, nokia 3230 with vodafone india connection.
The problem is that i am not able to use java based application, like
gmail using this connection.
Vodafone in. has got a proxy server for all wap as well as http
requests at 10.10.1.100:9401 at apn portalnmms . However the native
symbian applications like opera connects using this apn, but the kvm
bypasses this proxy server.
Initially i had an idea in. connection which doesn't have a proxy
server, and through this all java based applications runs fine.

Please guide me in this way so as to configure midlets to go through
the proxy server...

Shamail, while your query may be considered offtopic for this list. I
realize that you must be in pain due to the vodafone proxy. As a side
note remember that the postings on this list are going down. So, an
inference could be drawn that the people with the breadth required to
answer your query are a little rare to find here. My advise would be to
not give up on the list and ignore the noise. There might be someone
from that domain checking the digests.

Nevertheless, let me try and help you ask yourself some questions. These
will be very high level for I am no expert in the area. It may just
happen to be of some help. But no guarantees.

 1. Are you sure that the gmail midlet you are trying to install uses
 http protocol?
 2. Have you found some program for your phone which lets you specify an
 operating system wide http proxy?
 3. Have you verified that vodafone does not have an active policy to
block all non http or non authenticated access?

You could also try posing the query on forum nokia . Or other global
 lists where j2me developers gather.

Good luck with your connection. :)

 Cheers,
 Ajay

Thank you very much! But the same result at forum.nokia.com, they says that
nokia has no support for midlets to go from proxy after series 40 (since
2002) but yet has some unofficial ways to get it up. And as far as my
knowledge is concerned j2me has no support to hard code them as well, else a
wrapper could be used to attain this(like some midlet managers in
smart-phones like 02).
And as far as the 3 questions that were put up, i've verified that gmail
uses http(or atleast other applications such as Nimbuzz, that asks for the
connection method should work), and the proxy at vodafone allows outbound
http traffic through this proxy, but filters socket requests!

Anyways, sheer luck, maybe i should go for other mailing lists and groups!
But thanks for the help!

Re: [ilugd] my screen flickers

2007-09-23 Thread Shamail Tayyab
Asheesh, you yourself had specified the reason for the screen flicker...
The high voltage powerline produces a magnetic field strong enough make your
monitor flicker at 60Hz...
Think yourself, if your monitor is faulty, then why it doesn't flicker at
higher referesh rates.
The only solution that i can suggest is to keep your monitor at lower
resolution though at higher refresh rate, or try taking your monitor a bit
away from the high-tension wires., and if you can... then upgrade your
hardware.

Regards
Shamail Tayyab

My screen flickers on 1024 by 768 resolution

My screen used to be fine in my previous hostel but in my new hostel it
flickers at 1024 by 768 resolution (60 hz which is max my monitor allows at
this resolution) but not at 800 by 600 resolution (85 hz ).
I had these resolutions in my previous hostel also but it didn't used to
 flicker !!!

There is also a high powerline going above the hostels.
The two hostel are approximately 30m apart

Can anybody figureout the reason.Any solutions?
