[ilugd] [OT] Sending bulk mails
Hi, I wanted to send bulk mails. A lot of 'em. Nearly 3million. The contents of email will remain static most likely. I doubt that after few hundreds of mails, gmail, yahoo etc will start treating them spam. How can I send such number of emails without getting spammed? Also, I would be sending these mails from Amazon EC2 (most likely), but I am seeing that almost all of the IP addresses that belong to EC2 are in spamhaus list :( any good solution for this? ). [ilugd] Reliance netconnect always in Broadband+ mode
Hi, I recently got reliance netconnect+, now the problem is (what I think), I have a couple of base stations near my home, one one which supports Broadband+ mode and the other one doesn't (works in 1x mode only). I could think so because in one room, the dialer shows Broadband+ mode and speeds are good, while in the other room, it shows 1x and speed is very poor. But in the later case/room, if I manually tell the dialer to use Broadband+ mode, it works like charm. The problem is, the dialer is for Windows and on Linux it selects network automatically and most of the times I see speeds like 1x network only. Is there are way to tell Linux that, "Oh dear stupid modem, there is another network available that you can use rather than using this dumb network?" [ilugd] Undeleting an open file
Hi, I am just wondering if there is a way out for this problem.. I have a file say s.avi open in some multimedia player(or any other file open), then at command prompt I mistakenly delete or overwrite it. (Linux allows this, and will keep it playing as well, but cannot be used again, once the file handle releases it). So, till the time it is open, though the i-node entry is removed, can i recover the file? lsof is also listing the file, but how to recover that? Hello, Disaster is a general term that, at server management end, is presumably used mostly for backup and preparing yourself to get through an untoward incident if possibly occur. Most of the GNU/Linux systems, including RHEL 5, offers same tools for that (except few, and usage may differ). To get started, lets consider you have in mind, natural calamities, physical damage to the server, system failure, and external attacks. SYSTEM FAILURE: * This problem can be addressed by using distributed approach. You can follow this guide to set up a cluster http://www.ram.org/computing/linux/linux_cluster.html * Say you have 10 servers, then if 1 goes down, 9 will get slightly more load but the whole system won't go down. EXTERNAL ATTACKS: * External attacks can be of kind, Active attacks(like flooding, cracking etc) and passive attacks(like SQLInjection etc). All of them has different approach for prevention. * You may want to use some firewall like Shorewall etc to prevent yourself from Active attacks, and use a robust server application that handles passive attacks at runtime. * Apart from that, viruses worms etc also appear that may creep into your data, but since you are running RHEL its most likely secure, still its not a dead sure! PHYSICAL DAMAGE: * Physical damage can be as funny as, someone cut the power cable to someone completely broken the server so as to take an old revenge ;-) * For this you may want to keep the server in a secure location and away from the reach of your enemies. :D NATURAL CALAMITIES: * Like earthquake, floods, tsunami!!! Then its the RAID that comes into picture. Create a complete mirror of your server at a completely different geolocation. This minimizes the chance as natural calamities seldom occur at two geolocations simultaneously. Making Windows to recover instantly:* Install a copy of Windows with all the softwares, and keep a freezed image of this OS for emergency recovery. It takes about 5-7 mins to recover entire OS to the freezed state. Also if you can purchase, there is a software called as deep freeze that returns the system to its freezed state at every reboot. Undoing all the changes done to the system. That is one of the good software for systems with high virus infection risks. Files and folders can be configured to be saved and not to be undone at reboot. *2. Making files and folders safe:* On the second machine install some version of GNU/Linux and with the prevailing network mount a Samba share of Windows in RW mode on the Linux system. DO NOT put pen drives on the windows machine, rather use Linux for this and manually copy the desired files from the clients drive to the Windows machine using the mounted share. This will eleminate about 90% of viruses and malwares being spreaded by autorun method. *3. Using the External media as safe storage:* This can be done manually since now the system is not much prone to virus or using some automated backup tools like amanda. Configure Amanda to backup the windows machine over network using samba sharing. First identify the node in /dev where the device is plugged.
For this, do
$ ls /dev > /tmp/one
Then, plug the modem and
$ ls /dev > /tmp/two
Perform a diff as

It will show you something like

It looks more like a phishing attack. Sane advice would be not to open the attachment but my curiosity got the better of me and I had to check what this weird mail was. Since I have not received a good enough response from Airtel for a week now, paranoia is setting in :-) Anybody else received such a mail? Try to open the mail attachment in an isolated environment. As in a virtual Linux system. Even if it will cause damage, that won't effect you. P.S.: Apologies if this looks like a long rant, but its really confused me and googling around didn't help as I couldn't find anybody else facing this issue. Hi all, I am using ssh with X11 forwarding to access a remote machine running Ubuntu 7.10. from a Windows machine running Putty and XMing. The problem is that, the theme services are not up in the remote mode. Please guide me on how to enable it? one, with someone accessing via ssh!

Hi, I am trying to compile a new linux system using Linux From Scratch(LFS). The compilation of binutils, gcc and kernel API headers was flawless(While making toolchain) but in the compilation of glibc i get this error and the compilation terminated... mawk: scripts/gen-sorted.awk: line 19: regular expression compile failed (bad class -- [], [^] or [) Seems that the source code is error some. Some more manual commands suggests that either awk is not doing the job or really the script is buggy... Hi, I got this problem just a day before, before that everything was going ok. I am using an email id shamail [at] inbox.com, subscribed on iLugD with this one. I have one more gmail's is pleomax00 [at] gmail.com Now, i have added the first one as another email address in the gmail settings. Then, i've configured my ice dove to recieve emails from both. And to send emails using the SMTP server of gmail i.e pop.gmail.com Till 2 days before, i was able to send mails to both iLugD and Debian users list using these settings... But not now. >From iLugD i got a bounded mail with these contents.. The message's content type was not explicitly allowed Further, i changed my smtp server to use its own server i.e my.inbox.com This also doesn't worked. Had there been a problem with gmail's SMTP, this should work... But the mails are going from web-mail.. What to do? Here is a possible solution at me... Check for the file ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asoundrc This file (local and global resp) is the plugin file for ALSA, where the default output device the default mixer etc are specified. If this is the culprit then such errors are seen. If this is there then checkout what is the default outpit plugin... (easy to do it, just by reading the file). If it is something else then hw:0 or PCM then make it so (google for that) If not then, why not try installing the latest version of alsa, it will automatically fix any errors. This way you will get added features as well. Camera - not detected Touchpad, ethernet, battery - working perfectly Card Reader - din tried, but i thought, while bootin, i've seen something like "mass storage support initialized" - so should be working by default Sound working NVIDIA drivers -- u have to install seperately In short, you won't face any difficulty in installing most of the linux distros. And as far as my knowledge is concerned j2me has no support to hard code them as well, else a wrapper could be used to attain this(like some midlet managers in smart-phones like 02). And as far as the 3 questions that were put up, i've verified that gmail uses http(or atleast other applications such as Nimbuzz, that asks for the connection method should work), and the proxy at vodafone allows outbound http traffic through this proxy, but filters socket requests! Anyways, sheer luck, maybe i should go for other mailing lists and groups! [ilugd] Midlets using proxy
Hi, I've got a s60 based phone, nokia 3230 with vodafone india connection. The problem is that i am not able to use java based application, like gmail using this connection. Vodafone in. has got a proxy server for all wap as well as http requests at 10.10.1.100:9401 at apn "portalnmms" . However the native symbian applications like opera connects using this apn, but the kvm bypasses this proxy server. Initially i had an idea in. connection which doesn't have a proxy server, and through this all java based applications runs fine. Asheesh, you yourself had specified the reason for the screen flicker... The high voltage powerline produces a magnetic field strong enough make your monitor flicker at 60Hz... Think yourself, if your monitor is faulty, then why it doesn't flicker at higher referesh rates. The only solution that i can suggest is to keep your monitor at lower resolution though at higher refresh rate, or try taking your monitor a bit away from the high-tension wires., and if you can... then upgrade your hardware.
