I am syncing my address book with GMail. It is a pain to begin with

Atleast it is for me.

For backing up call logs and SMS's, I am using SMS Backup+ which
stores it as emails in GMail, applies labels and archives them.

For backing up apps, there is Titanium Backup. But, you will need to
root your phone. Also, free version has a limitation that you manually
have to restore one app at a time. Pro version isn't that expensive
though, it costs ~Rs 268.

Does maker / brand make any difference here?

Not for the above methods.

I want actual experiences please. And my place is exclusive GNU/Linux,
so sotware on the PC has to be FLOSS, preferably in Debian main.

I have not tried using any PC apps as yet.

It can be done if your driver supports setting your wifi card into master mode.
From the iwconfig man page

mode Set the operating mode of the device, which depends on the net‐
work topology. The mode can be Ad-Hoc (network composed of only
one cell and without Access Point), Managed (node connects to a
network composed of many Access Points, with roaming), Master
(the node is the synchronisation master or acts as an Access
Point), Repeater (the node forwards packets between other wire‐
less nodes), Secondary (the node acts as a backup mas‐
ter/repeater), Monitor (the node is not associated with any cell
and passively monitor all packets on the frequency) or Auto.

 * Your experience in both tool. ?

 * is feature wise OOo calc is not better then Excel ?

Depends on the features that are needed. So, it may be so for some but
for many it doesn't matter because they never make use of those
features.

 * will a Excel user face any problem in migration.?

Yes, the mind set and habits. That's the biggest problem IMO. Just the
idea of using something alien is repulsive enough for many. And for
many more they cannot adjust to the 'new ways' of doing things. It's
true of migrating from any one product to another. For example the
keyboard short cuts may differ. One problem I see almost all excel
users complain is not being able to change margins in print preview
mode.
But, with some push from the 'higher ups', helping hand from
experienced OpenOffice users/experts and a period of regular usage
building up familiarity is what's needed in most cases.
One case where I came across where I had stumbled was when the company
was using a custom made macro for converting figures into text for the
currency value they obtained in the total field. So, now this function
did not work in OpenOffice. Looking around I did find a macro which
could do this but unfortunately it could only handle values upto
1. Playing around a bit with it, I got it to work with their
function but I couldn't get it to handle values higher than 21000 or
some such value for a reason unknown to me. Maybe someone better in
programming could have taken it further and would have been successful
in implementing it.

How genuine is it? You cannot bundle those pantent encumbered codecs

open sourced under a compatible license.
But, short of bundling those proprietory stuff. Any newbie distro

to codecs but also graphics drivers to applications and more.
And for those who don't have internet, distros like ubuntu have
apt-on-cd which makes it a breeze to get softwares on a box running

Firstly, there's no concept of C: and D: in linux or any *nix OS, for

for now because your previous D: will now become C: for the 2nd windows
install and linux won't show any C: causing more confusion.

Now coming to the point, try to fix the MBR and boot from windows install CD in
repair mode, that should fix the windows booting problem I guess but in
the process GRUB will be lost cause windows seemingly ignores presence
of other OS's. So, then you'll have to reinstall grub, too.

I stated that if the same download has an existing bittorrent file then
it can be done.
eg. Near the end of this month most people will be downloading Ubuntu
8.04 and Fedora 9. So, after starting the download they realise the
servers are heavily loaded thus giving them below optimal download
speeds. Thus, they can switch over to torrents for the rest of the
downloads. Bittorrent can check the file for the downloaded parts thus
avoiding re-downloading them. So, in effect you will be continuing your
downloads at much better speeds(subject to properly configured
bittorrent client).

Yes, you can finish the rest of the download with torrents. You just
need to obtain the torrent file of the same release of the distro either
from Mandriva's website or from linuxtracker.org.
Open the torrent file in your BitTorrent client. When it asks for
location to download, point it to your unfinished download. You won't
have to bother about filename since torrent will adher to it as it's the
same release via HTTP, FTP or torrents. Now the client will check the
download for the existing pieces, discard bad pieces if any and then
continue with the rest of the download.

great.

you know thr a concept is roaming in mind that can we install all the
computers connectd via LAN from a single system...

I believe that is possible but don't know the procedure, someone
else should answer.

also i had heared that we can use 7.04 as a server by installing services on
 it...

You can use any linux distribution, not just ubuntu. By installing
necessary softwares you can run any type of server on any
distribution.

i want to do this in my lab that to make one system to b traeted as a
server, and which should enable us to install other nodes via LAN...

Very much possible.

your nvidia card
and ask for permission to download latest available nvidia driver for
ubuntu 7.10.

You opened the mp3 file with which audio/music player? If you open it
