Raj, just look at these discussions on freeipa users mailing list:

https://www.redhat.com/archives/freeipa-users/2009-January/msg0.html
https://www.redhat.com/archives/freeipa-users/2008-December/msg00035.html
https://www.redhat.com/archives/freeipa-users/2008-December/msg00031.html

Also, some thing like ipa-winsync is in works

Very keenly looking for developments in this area. I think we are pretty close.

How about just AD. Can one mimic that using Linux, with all AD
features? Say we get rid of Samba 4 (which is not an option due to its
development status), is it possible to just have Linux work as an AD
server in a Winduhs environment with all the bells and whistles that AD
provides?

Thanks, that's useful information to keep in mind once Samba 4
stabilises (and if MS hasn't moved their proprietary extensions to
another point by then ;)

If you use samba as PDC , kerberos isn't involved for authentication
it's samba that does the authentication stuff. In case of AD , AD uses
kerberos.

At this moment only samba4 (which I have configured) provides everything
that is a samba server , a kerberos server (hacked hemidal) and it's own
LDAP server (though other LDAP servers can be used , requires lot of
hacking at the moment).

Hi,

The only way out is samba4 that is complete AD replacement in Linux. And
also look into freeipa though it doesn't provide lot of AD functionality
but after samba4 integration within freeipa definitely it will.

Also note that samba4 is in alpha stage as of now.

Take a look at Samba 4, feature set includes Domain Controller, Active
Directory.

No personal experience with it though.

Yes it is possible. Samba can act as domain controller. There is documentation
on Samba web site.

No, don't need both, Secondary is a backup of primary in case primary became
unavailable for some reason.

I have used Winbind (part of Samba) and Kerberos encryption to authenticate
Linux box with Windows AD server (documents on Samba web site) but should be
possible to do it with OpenLDAP.

Siju George (Hifx IT and Media Services Private Limited, Cochin,
http://www.hifx.net) has implemented Samba based PDCs. Their network
consists of Microsoft Windows, GNU/linux and BSD boxes. Hifx also
sells Samba based Domain controller solutions.

Siju would be the best person to guide you on this. I can pass you
his contact email address and phone number off list.

As far as I know once you configure Samba as a PDC, you don't need any
AD server. I am not sure on the encryption part. Integration with
OpenLDAP is certainly possible.

Yes, Samba-Vscan was the first option I tried. It didn't compile at all
on FC7 with Samba 3.0.28a sources, and in any case its web site says
it's a proof of concept. I'm looking for something a bit more robust.

2008-10-18 Thread Raj Mathur
A client is running a few hundred Winduhs PCs in his office, with 3
Linux FC Samba servers. Facing tons of problems with viruses on the
shares, so we're looking for a Samba+Anti-virus solution.

1. Investigated Samba-VScan and Scannedonly. Both are totally alpha,
and both refuse to compile against the Samba 3.0.28a sources. Knocked
out at the starting gate itself.

2. Need to investigate an IDS (Snort) running in conjunction with Samba.
Has anyone tried (or heard of) this as a Samba anti-virus solution?

3. Any other possibility (apart from switching the desktops to Linux,
which is currently not feasible)?

[ilugd] Samba Mount Problem

2007-12-02 Thread Vijay Thakur
Dear Tux Friends,

I am migration a MS Windows 2000 file server to OpenSuse 10.3. In the current
working scenerio, there is one directory on Windows Server named "Common" with
two shared directories 1) Inter Department 2) Intra Department

This will will help to understand the directory structure:

===>> Common-> Inter Department
-> Intra Department

>> Intra Department -> Service Department, Tender, Exports, Accounts,
Customer Care,Logistics

>> Inter Department -> Tender, Exports, Accounts, Logistics

On the client end in Opensuse 10.3, I am mount these Win 2000 share by giving
the command:

//192.168.0.141/Common/Intra Department/Service Department  /test cifs
username=jackob,password=12345678

This is saying that share does not exist.

And this is working fine, but not my exact requirement:-

//192.168.0.141/Common /test cifs username=jackob,password=12345678

I'm not sure, if Nautilus mounted it in filesystem somewhere. It can
probably only be accessed by a GNOME-VFS compliant client. How about
mounting it using 'mount'. Use 'cifs' as filesystem type. For more
information, check out mount.cifs(8), which ships as part of samba.

[ilugd] Samba PDC permission issues

2007-02-26 Thread Openlx Linux
Hello List,

I have created a setup consisting of :

1. Samba-PDC server running Centos Linux 4.4, 32 bit, Samba version
3.0.9.1.3E.10, named A

2. This server is joined by three Samba workstations running Centos
Linux 4.4, 32 bit, Samba version 3.0.9.1.3E.10, Named B, C & D.

The workstations (B, C & D) are authenticated by PDC (A). There are
Unix groups on PDC which are converted to NT-groups on A (PDC), using
the command :
# net groupmap add ntgroup="group-name" unixgroup="group-name" type=d

The 3 workstations share files that are given group-wise ACL permissions.

When I join the workstations to the PDC server through authconfig
command, the workstation is shown as joined.

When I use the command "getent -g" , it does not show the PDC group.
It shows the groups of the local workstation only.

The ACL permissions are not working. I am using the command :
# setfacl -m g:DOMAIN\\groups:rwx /foldername

I get the error message : setfacl: Option -m: Invalid argument near character 3

I seem to be missing something, because, on completing the setup, this
worked for 4 hours and then stopped. The log message, at error time,
started showing this message :

===error message on PDC (A) server==

Just for archiving purposes:

Well answer is automounter;. Here is my auto.master and auto.smb
/etc/auto.master includes

/data/share /etc/auto.smb --timeout=60

/etc/auto.smb includes

uploads
-fstype=smbfs,username=Administrator,password=xxx,uid=user,gid=ftpusers
://hostname/uploads

It works great, thank to all those who replied.
Cheers!

You could have better adminsitration in ideal cases but i have been
very annoyed with this fstab/vfstab which screams loud when your nfs
server is down.
my both the boxes are away i can't quit if nfs server is down..and its
waiting indefinite to server to come up, anyway

is the hard mount option by default? if yes then it does't seems to be
working with smbfs beacuse when problem occurs of hanging i just umount

googling & gllug have suggests to have autofs should work ..with some

Firstly put it under /etc/fstab - you have better control over the
mounting and unmounting process including unmounting shares while
shuttign down.

Secondly I think your problem stems from the fact that smbfs like nfs
will retry indefinitely if a share becomes unavilable - this can have
serious implications on the server. The way around is to understand how
the hard and soft mount options works. Read the details under the nfs
section in mount and decide which one is more important. Remember hard
mount is the default and that is what you would usually want unless
your apps really know how to handle unrealible network file systems.

hey,

If your shares are static then you can add entries in /etc/fstab for these
shares

for example

//server/backup (windows machine)/mnt/backup(linux mount
point)cifs
  credentails=/etc/.smb,uid=xx,gid=xxx   0 0

credentials=filename
specifies a file that contains a username and/or password.
The
  format of the file is:

username=valueusername=ankush
password=valuepassword=ankush
This is preferred over having passwords in plaintext in
a
shared file, such as /etc/fstab. Be sure to protect any
creden-
  tials file properly.

Make sure /etc/.smb is 600 or 400

for more information regarding cifs"man mount.cifs"

username=Administrator,password=xxx,uid=userid,gid=ftpusers
//xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/share /data/share/ &

Is there any nice other way around to get sync again smb shares in such

a automount dir for ftp home dir would work ? just guessing!?

see all PCs in my domain and also from other domains in my LAN. But the problem
is whenever I try to access the PCs (shared files) its giving an error :

You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "Windows
Network:" .

This is hapenning for all Computers.
But I can access a Win'98 shared PC.
I tried to search for solutions on the net but only ended in finding mails
asking for help for the same error. Some sites say that there is a "Add Network
Place" option under "Computer" on Desktop but I couldn't find any such option.

If anybody faced similar problems and have any solution plz. help me.

hi
well i am not pro but i can try to answer your query
from the Samba-3 by example by John H. Terpstra. There
is a question answer section in the first chapter
which is:
Q. What is the significance of the guest accout in
smb,conf?
Ans. This parameter specifies the default UNIX account
to which MS windows networking NULL session
connections are mapped. The default name for the UNIX
account used for this mapping is called nobody. If the
UNIX/Linux system that is hosting Samba does not have
a nobody account and an alternate mapping has not been
specified, network browsing will not work at all.
It should be noted that the guest account is essential
to Samba operation. Either the operating system must
have an account called nobody or there must be an
entry is the smb.conf file with a valid UNIX accout.
For example, guest account = ftp.

Hope it will clear your doubts. Others comment are
welcome.

Thanks

Have a look at http://us4.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch10.html

If you plan to adminster samba, then you should certainly buy
book "Using Samba, 2nd Edition" . You can even read the book online.

For one Windows XP is in workgroup mode or domain.

In case its domain mode, the domain controller has to register your file
server before you can serve to a domain.

Second - Did you test this setup on same machine using smbmount etc.

Third - You should reproduce the relevent log files from Samba. This

Re. [ilugd] Samba Configuration

2004-08-02 Thread Raj Shekhar

but the machine does not shows up in winxp m/c network. although i am able
to ping each one from the other.
now where to trouble shoot.

Not that easy. You will now have to create machine trust accounts for every
machine that needs to access this server, and user accounts for those who
want to access this server.
After the changes Subodh has made to smb.conf file, the samba server
should start showing up in the network neighborhood. The users may not
be able to access files.

- Check whether you have a firewall blocking the connections to the
samba server.

- Check if you can see other PCs of the network from your samba server.
For example, if you have a windows system with netbios name of "CRASHER"
then run the command ``nmblookup CRASHER`` from your samba server. It
should give you the IP address of CRASHER.

- from CRASHER try accessing your smaba server directly by typing
"\\SAMBA_SERVER_NAME" and report back the error message you get.

- Check the samba log files.
Lastly, please do not hijack threads. If you see
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi/6043 .. you will
find that your mail has been filed under "Hungama time" . I have started
a new thread for you, please use it for further discussion.

Below is an explanation how threading works.

To start a new topic of discussion (commonly called a `thread'),
compose a new message. Hit the "Write new message" button (or whatever
button your client uses). Type in the address of the mailing list as
the To address. This is the only way to actually start a new thread.
Always start a new thread instead of taking an already ongoing one,
changing the subject line and posting it again. The subject line is
only loosely related to the threading. Every mail message has a
message-id. When you "reply" or "followup" to a message, you client is
supposed to put a References header with the message-id of the message
you are replying to.
If you use an existing thread, the result is that your question is
buried below unrelated questions when looking at the mailing list in a
threaded way. This is known as `Hijacking threads'. It causes
information to be lost and you'll be less likely to get an answer.

True. I am not asking that it should have figured out if its newlines
should appear above or below a comment. What I was cheesed about was what I
said above: it did not backup the file, it gave no warning. I know it was
my fault, but I partially blame the program for not adhering to the

Unforgivable.
But isnt this the same with any frontend/shell to an existing program?

One has to make a consistent decision while using any GUI frontends
which edit the same config file that you can edit manually - either use
the GUI all the time or edit the config file manually all the time. I
personally do both - I use GUI the first time to create a template, and
then consistently *allways* manually edit them.

Comments are for humans; if you decide to use an automated/GUI frontend,
you have to sacrifice that unless the GUI allows you to make contextual
comments to options.

The connection between comments and the option that it is related to is
very subjective - I can make a global comment somewhere or a comment on
the next option in the file. Say you add an additional option to the
configuration - Where will the UI put a new option line without
disturbing the comment context? Too difficult, not reliable and not
worth the trouble when all you want is to create an UI for users to add
option reliably.

It is virtually unthinkable to ever make an UI which can reliably handle
preserving comments to options.

The solutions goes simple. Let them use SAmba to Share files with

Anyway for non techies sharing files you can use webmin to configure

If you are bent on using samba no prob it will work fine since the users

But Remember one thing if you want users to be able to give the users

So better is you create the shares on every maching manually or through

Because it's incomplete. You can make manual edit changes in
smb.conf, and then run Swat and if Swat doesn't understand those
changes it'll just happily delete them. It'll also delete any
comments that you put in your smb.conf to make it more readable to the
next person who comes along to maintain Samba in your organisation.

Make a public directory in someplace like /home/public
As su "chmod 777 /home/public"
Any user then can make a folder / file in this directory AND can also
set up the permissions for others with simple right click and properties
or "chmod 770 /home/public/xyz" or other appropriate permissions 750 740
or even 700 for not sharing.
If the groups are already created the he can also right click properties
and change group or run "chown user:group /home/public/xyz" Sharing with
a single other user can be achieved by "chown user:user2
/home/public/xyz" as all users have their individual groups created.
Should be working without having to setup through swat / webmin.

I think the way to do this in *nix world is through NFS. I am not a NFS
man myself, but people who use it for sharing files are generally happy
with it.

Another plus point about NFS is that you can browse it using Konqueror
by typing lan:// (again I have not tried this out myself, since I get my
work done with Samba and not NFS). This has been a part of conqueror
since 2.0 See http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-2.0.php

As for setting up the NFS you can have a look at Linux NFS-HOWTO
http://nfs.sourceforge.net/nfs-howto/index.html I am not sure if you
have a webmin module for configuring NFS

And could you tell me how it is a bad solution to the OP's question?
swat comes by default enabled only to be accessed from localhost. Yes,
it asks for root password over a cleartext based HTTP POST system. But I
am sure, it is good enough to be used over localhost when the local root
account is considered to be secure enough. And if configured to be used
along with stunnel it is as secure as any other over the network. UI -
webmin or what not. BTW, even webmin is considered to be a security hole
by many.

SWAT stands for Samba Web Administration Tool.
Google/linux came up with this
http://samba.linuxbe.org/en/samba/learn/swat.html

The problem AFAIK with swat is that it is not easy to configure. Beats the hell out of
you and you still get nowhere. That's so in many cases, but, those who are successful
in configuring it right love it.

2004-01-30 Thread Gurnish S Anand
What Samba version are you using ?
I think the old version upto 2.2.5 or 2.2.7 do not support xp domain logons.

Check with the samba.org to double check whether your version supports xp logons.

Re: [ilugd] samba problem with win xp

2004-01-29 Thread Mani
The registry key should be

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters]
"requiresignorseal"=dword:
"signsecurechannel"=dword:

Check if your smb.conf file has the following lines

domain master = yes

local master = yes

preferred master = yes

os level = 255

security = user

domain logons = yes

the "Domain not found" error can be use to some WINS problem, (you can try
adding entries to the LMHOSTS/hosts file of your XP client machine), or some
browse master related problems. The os level = 255 will ensure that the
samba server wins all browse elections. Also have you added any line that
will create a Linux user account for your machine? Check if you have the
following line or something similar.

add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g 100 -s /bin/false -M %u

You can check the "Using Samba" 2'nd edition by O'Rielly, it's available in
html format at the samba site, and is also distributed with samba 3.0
sources (yes, samba 3.0 sources includes html books for samba 2.2)

Also check if you have a domain admin group, and that the corresponding
samba users exist.

I believe you are missing some steps, it would be better if you create a
checklist and check it against the manual you are using.

Regards

Mani

Dear Kedar,
You need to tell us much more than that, what error does
windows display? Did you check the samba logs? Do they report any errors?
What registry patch did you apply? Does it look like
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters]
"requiresignorseal"=dword:
"signsecurechannel"=dword:

ANd most importantantly are you using samba 3.0 or 2.2xx, and have you added
the XP box to the samba domain?

Re: [ilugd] samba problem with win xp

2004-01-20 Thread Mani
Dear Kedar,
You need to tell us much more than that, what error does
windows display? Did you check the samba logs? Do they report any errors?
What registry patch did you apply? Does it look like
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters]
"requiresignorseal"=dword:
"signsecurechannel"=dword:

ANd most importantantly are you using samba 3.0 or 2.2xx, and have you added
the XP box to the samba domain?

RE: [ilugd] samba problem with win xp

2004-01-20 Thread Supreet Sethi
One sure shot way is to use Samba v 3. Samba 3 provides all the features
which Xp expects out of a CIFS server, So no reegistry key changes, no
dirty work. But that does'nt mean that samba 2(point) releases cannot
serve windows XP clients. One would need to see what is really
happening. LOG file snippet for instance should be included. Nobody can
give exact answer, unless you ask a precise question.

WinXp not working with samba is to ambigious a question to ask.

So if you could post some relevent log files. You will get better
response

Specially for windows XP you Need to disable the option "Digitally encrypt
or Sign Secure Channel data" which is by default ENABLED.
As you need not to encrypt data over your Local LAN. You will find it in

"Administrative Tools" -> "Local Security Policy" -> "Local Policies"->
"Security Options"

[ilugd] SAMBA Problem

2003-11-29 Thread Ritesh Agrawal
Hi Everyone ,

I am facing a strange problem in configuring Samba server as PDC server .
Everything is runing good except when i try to share a folder in windows 98
machine (in 'User-level access control' mode in Network Properties) , and
click on add button on 'Sharing' tab, it shows following message...
"you can not view the list of users at this time, please try again later ".

I can't navigate user's list to assign rights on the folder..

In 'Share-level access control ' mode , everything is fine , no problem in
authentication and sharing .

can any one solve my problem?
thanks in advance

Check for the netbios name entry.
Change it from netbios name = whatever to netbios = whatever
take off the "name" keyword, which is desupported in newer versions.

Enjoy !!

2003-11-25 Thread Yashpal Nagar
Hello Akshay,
Please check few things:-
1. Check the samba logs /var/log/samba/log.nmbd
2. How you are adding the user to smabpasswd . (i use "sambpasswd -a user")
pls check it.

3. If samba has to work only a file server within you LAN & security is not
much of an issue then look for "NOTE ABOUT USERNAME/PASSWORD VALIDATION" para
in "man smb.conf"
4. Check the permissions of exposed Dirs
If you need my config file mail me off the list.

Can not access the network running samba right now but off hand recall:
1. Some thing about plain / encrypted password problem between earlier /
later version of Win98 so probably plain password may work.
2. The user log in name into win98 should be same as the login name in
linux. Why I do not know but seems to work like this only.
You have to add user /passwd in Samba not pass them on(what ever you
mean by that)

[ilugd] samba masala dosa

2003-11-25 Thread LinuxLingam
argh!

have successfully configured samba server such that in the network
neighbourhood of a win98 pc, i can finally see the hostname of the samba
pc.

double-click: and it says //[hostname] is not accessible. the specified
computer did not receive your request. try again later.

[hostname] contains the netbios name as specified in smb.conf of the
linux pc.

1) username and passwd added to linux box.
2) username and passwd passed on to smbpasswd
3) encrypted password on in samba.
4) win98 windows logon (right after boot) uses *same* username and
passwd. for good measure, the 'identification' of the pc is also the
same username.
5) the work group is identical for both pcs.
6) iptables ipchains, default firewalls (lokkit, network security, etc)
are all disabled.
7) the linux samba server does show up in the network neighbourhood,
which means they can see each other.
8) once, using smbclient, did successfully log on to the win98 pc and
mount its shared folders to the linux pc.
9) googled extensively.
10) the shares under samba are set up correctly. (i.e., there is a
sub-directory all ready to be shared with the win box).

what's going on?
