Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop crashing
Hi, as I said in my message it was Jaws 2018 but I'm not sure on the build version. It was whatever was the last build before the latest update. I've been using the laptop allot on battery lately with no issues so hopefully it is fixed. The annoying thing was that this is a brand new laptop so it shouldn't be having any major issues. Well I'm crossing my fingers that the issue is now solved. >From Shaz. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Valiant8086 Sent: Friday, June 15, 2018 11:39 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop crashing Hi. Do you know exactly which version of JAWS you were running? It might be possible that you were running the one that had a nice bug where it always used 100 percent of which ever cpu thread it was executing on all of the time. It was 17 point something, if you know what it was we can maybe figure out if that was the one. In any case, if that's what was going on, I think it might be possible that your battery wasn't providing enough power to execute that fast and the board undervoltaged. this usually should happen when the battery is very low, and never on a fairly new battery a year or newer, but older batteries that may not be putting out as many volts as they should could be not providing enough watts for the system to extend power to all components when the cpu wants more than a certain amount. You probably would know your computer now runs cooler than it used to, it should be very obvious if that's a possible explanation. To clerify something, it actually turns off, just pressing power starts it in the boot up process? Another possibility could be that you put the laptop on your lap in a certain way or you fidget (no offense intended here) in some way that's exposing a short somewhere that your brother didn't duplicate. My Lenovo yoga 2 pro used to take out my WiFi network not just for itself, but for everybody, if I picked it up by squeezing the right edge in one hand. I had to get used to holding it with two hands or laying it across an arm or what ever. So saying, that actually isn't out of the realm of possibility. [JAWS-Users] Laptop crashing
Hi all, I have a acer laptop running windows 10 and Jaws 2018. I have been having an issue where my computer will turn completely off with no warning when running on battery. When I restart the laptop the battery level is always pretty high so it isn't a battery issue. I took note of when this was happening so my brother could look at the logs and see what is happening. Well as far as he could see there was no reason for it. Then my brother played with my laptop for awhile without Jaws on and the laptop didn't shut down. He gave it back to me and I turned Jaws on and one minute later it had turned off. So this led us to think it was something to do with Jaws but I couldn't see why that was causing this. This Lenovo laptop has 8 GB of ram and a 250 GB SSD. I really, really like having an SSD. Everything is so fast. I just plug in an external 1 TB drive for additional data storage. It's all very fast. I also use an external wireless USB keyboard, so I didn't mind that the laptop keyboard didn't include a keypad. My laptop also has bluetooth, so that would be an option, but I've not used a bluetooth keyboard with my laptop. I have connected bluetooth headphones, though. As far as getting rid of bloatware is concerned, I understand the next version of Windows will have an option to install a fresh copy of Windows built right in. If I recall correctly, it's called Windows Refresh or something like that. It downloads a fresh copy of Windows and does a complete reinstall, keeping only some of the built-in Windows apps. All other apps and programs are removed, getting rid of all bloatware. I think this is the best idea Microsoft has had since they launched Windows. I know if I were buying a new computer, the first thing I'd do is bring it home and run a Windows Refresh, giving me a nice clean Windows to begin setting up. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
Hi Tammy, I have primarily used Toshiba and Dell. Others in my house have used HP, although not with JAWS. In my opinion, all 3 brands have been very reliable. With that said, my husband had a Toshiba and it was nothing but trouble. I have used laptops for nearly 30 years. None of them have had a separate number pad from the keyboard. With my very first laptop, I attempted to use an external number pad, and could never find one that allowed me to execute JAWS commands. As a result I have learned to use the embedded number pad, and have the JAWS Keyboard layout set to Desktop. Sometimes this does require interesting finger gymnastics, but it works for me. When I'm looking for a new laptop, I look for the one that provides me with the most up-to-date features for the lowest cost. Yes, this probably means that I will spend more money than I want, but I've always gotten 5 plus years out of my laptops. I also look for the lightest weight one with a keyboard that feels right under my fingers, i.e. shape and size of the keys, spacing between keys, and firmness when activating. Finally, battery life is a factor as well. With my current Toshiba dinosaur, I've gotten spoiled by a button between the keyboard and the mouse that allows me to turn the mouse on and off as needed. My work Dell laptop requires me to use a keyboard command to turn the mouse pad on and off, and that is not so bad. As much as I would love to say that I can tackle everything and anything on my computer without some sighted help here and there, that is just not the case. So being able to turn the mouse on and off as needed is very convenient. Many many years ago I bought one of my computers from MicroCenter and their service was great. They removed all of the junk and even installed JAWS for me. Another family member went there a number of years later and was not happy with the service. The last time I checked, their prices were higher than Best Buy where I've bought the past 2 computers over the past 11 years. Also with the last 2 purchases, I used the Dell and the Toshiba technical support. Both were very good at that time. The Toshiba tech support figured out how to turn off the "touch sensitive control panel so that I could not accidently turn things on and off. Now with the Microsoft Disability Support line, you have another source for help. Although sometimes having all of these support options can get you in a position where they each point the finger at the other one to address the problem. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing. My current Toshiba is now six and a half years old, so I'm sure a replacement is not too far around the corner. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
My most recent personal laptop is an ASUS. If you are comfortable with using the JAWS laptop layout, I really enjoy this machine. It isn't a touch device but has a great feel on your lap and the weight of the device is so incredible to feel that such a powerful device is so not heavy. Most importantly for me, typing on the keyboard feels solid. To be clear this machine isn't for everyone. It has a smaller screen but my goals were powerful performance in the smallest machine I could find. I bought it from Amazon originally. The model I purchased doesn't seem to be available from Amazon but maybe there is a newer model. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LHUAFAQ/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF 8=1 -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Greg Washington Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 5:50 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions Iagree about Dell laptop computers being a good pick. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
I use a Lenovo P50S laptop for work that has a keyboard with a numeric keypad. I know JAWS can be switched to laptop layout, but I prefer having the extra keys just for use with screen readers. JAWS is fast and responsive on this laptop with a braille display (Focus 40 Blue) and Vocalizer Expressive speech, as long as nothing crashes, as some applications unfortunately tend to do. I recently bought a similar laptop to use at home - a Lenovo P51. I can't comment yet, as it's still on the way. Audiobookfan <listening...@gmail.com> wrote: > I like Toshiba. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
I will start by saying it isn't really an option to "customize" a laptop. They're not nearly as easy to swap boards in and out as you can with a desktop. If you don't want to screw around with getting rid of all the unwanted software and games that come on most commercial laptops, you can look on the Microsoft site for I think they call them certified or something. Another option is to find a listing on sites like Ebay that advertise a clean install of Windows 10 with no other bloatware. At one time, I would say avoid Acers, they used to have more hardware issues andd their support wasn't very good. That may have changed lately. Personally, I have used HP for my last few leptops. The main thing with a laptop is to get some hands-on experience with it. Unlike desktops, their keyboard layout and feel can vary quite a bit between different brands or models. - Original Message - From: "Tammy Freitag" <ms.sunflowe...@gmail.com> To: "jaws-users-list" <jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 3:41 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions Hello, I am looking for opinions about laptop brands. [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
Hello, I am looking for opinions about laptop brands. I know there isn't one perfect answer to this but I do value the opinions and experiences of others. I want to purchase a Windows 10 laptop. Here are my questions; 1. Which brand would you recommend? Why? 2. What brand would you totally avoid? Why?? 3. Since I use Jaws, would it be better to purchase a system off the shelf or have one custom built? I have had them custom built before because I didn't want all of the games and extra unaccessible programs taking up space. These will do for a start. Thanks for your input! -- Independence is yours . Are you willing to reach for it? Tammy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] laptop reboots in mute mode
after turning my laptop off for a 3 hour car ride, and rebooting it, there was no musical jingle letting me know it was loaded, and also, jaws didn't come on (I have jaws start after it loads). I rebooted it 2 more times, before having a family member look at it, and was told it was in mute mode. since it opens in mute mode...no jaws. anyone have this happen to them, and can help? jaws 17 For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Hi, This will not be a problem. You are missing the applications key, but you can press shift + F10 to do the same thing. You will have to press that command instead of the applications key. Have a great one. -Original Message- From: Lenny McHugh Sent: Wednesday, December 2, 2015 1:25 PM To: JFW List Subject: [JAWS-Users] laptop keyboard I did get to see the hp15-f233mw that I should receive on Friday. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop computer win 7
There are step-by-step instructions posted for accomplishing this; I've seen articles in Windows Secrets newsletter which I religiously subscribe to; as well as a lot of other placesone can find by searching Google. The directions are simple enough that a person with a modicum of intelligence and the ability to follow step-by-step procedures can easily succeed. The folks at Microsoft had a reason for setting this up; I'm sure many people won't bother to make the corrections. But, those who are sensitive about privacy and such can make these changes easily. [JAWS-Users] laptop internet connection problem
I wrote earlier today asking for help with what to do when I put cmd in the start menu search box, and the page openned. I also put a list of commands a computer friend gave me. I’ve replied to the jaws user that answered my question, but have heard nothing back from him, but another question I have is, when he said to “ When you bring up that task tray with insert f11 does it even show something for connections?” on my laptop, I hit cap loc + f11, and nothing happens. am I hitting the correct key for insert? I’m simply trying to connect to the internet by hooking up to my modem For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

You have to have jaws set to laptop in the basic options. Then that key combo should work. [JAWS-Users] laptop keystrokes
I’ve been sending recent questions on help with my new laptop, and other than finding out connecting to wireless, I’ve also noticed that the keyboard layout is different too, so I’m asking: is the shift key the insert key? is there an applications key? how do I open any of the f keys? are all laptop keyboards designed , layed out, the same For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop keystrokes
To answer your last question first no, all manufactures have there own layout for keyboard. Some do have full size keyboards and are mostly 17 inch. The smaller sizes have compact keyboards and use a FN key as a modifier key for the f1 to f12 keys for different functions. Some of them will have a application key and some won't. You can set jaws to use the caps lock key for the insert key. On my Toshiba netbook has a insert key next to the delete key and the Toshiba 15 inch has none, and the dell aspire also has none. But all 3 do have the wireless quick shut off key controlled with the FN key with f2, f6 and f4. So it just depends on manufacture and model for keyboard layout. Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop automatically connecting to network
Thank you, David. Great directions! My problem is that there are times when I go to the manage wireless networks and the network I have just connected isn't there. Right now, I have three networks in my manage wireless networks. The other day, I used these same directions that someone sent me a few weeks ago. and this worked perfectly. That night, I connected with the network at the Laquinta Inn, just to see if my problem was solved. With this network connected, I found that the network did not appear in the manage wireless connections area. I found the same to be true when we visited our Toyota dealership. Is there something I need to adjust? David, this is not a must. I just am interested in find out the answer. Thanks to you, and other members of this group for your patience. Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop automatically connecting to network
Is that router configured not to broadcast it's SSID? This is the name that should appear in the Connect to dialog. If it does not, you will need to enter the SSID manually as well as it's pass phrase. The other possibility is that the laptop is just too far away to make a connection. It may be set up in a bad place or around something causing interference. Try connecting with the laptop close to the router. The best place to put a router is near the center of the house (or central to all of the areas you want wireless Internet)and up high. Microwaves, cordless phones, and neighbor's routers can cause interference. Try to keep these items away from the router and laptop. Logging into the router and changing the wireless channel number can make a vig difference. I think the channels go from 1 to 11. Changing my router to channel 11 made a big improvement so that I no longer get drop outs. *Don Marang* Vinux Software Development Coordinator - vinuxproject.org http://www.vinuxproject.org/ There is just so much stuff in the world that, to me, is devoid of any real substance, value, and content that I just try to make sure that I am working on things that matter. -- Dean Kamen On 4/7/2011 11:17 PM, Russ Hubley wrote: Hi everyone, I have asked this question before, but I have some additional evidence and a question. Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop automatically connecting to network
Thank you, Don, The signal strength here at the laquinta inn comes in as excellent. The name I here is, LQ net. The routers I was able to successfully set up for my computer to always connect when in range are as follows They are also in my manage wireless networks. Under properties, the checkbox is checked concerning always connecting when in range. My home router, (required a password) My son-in-law's router, also required a password Our local computer shop, uncertain if this required a password. All above connections were excellent. Is there something I can adjust to take care of this issue? Don, this is not a big deal, just kind of a challenge. As long as I just put the laptop to sleep, it retains the wireless network connection. I went to properties and found the checkbox checked which would always allow me to automatically reconnect. On two different occasions, I have successfully connected to a network, but, when I went to the manage wireless networks, i did not find the current network, and could not set up this automatic feature. One of these was the Laquinta Inn and the other was our auto dealership network. Are there certain networks that do not allow you to use this automatic feature, or is there something I need to change. Any ideas would be appreciated. Intersting. I did not know that, thank you. I most of the time have used my laptop with an external keyboard but having one with a numpad has made me consider using the inbuilt one. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop doesn't show on AC power
You could have a bad power cord or it is not properly attached. Or the battery could be really old or damaged and needs to be replaced. thirdly, the computer has a problem charging and that is where the problem lies. So I would eliminate possible problems. I would suggest you see if the power cord is working. 1. shut down the computer. 2. take the battery out of the computer. 3. be sure your power cord is properly attached to the computer and the wall outlet and that this wall outlet works. also be sure any other connections in the power cord are attached. 4. turn on your computer now and if it boots up then you know your power cord is working and you have another problem. good luck. Sometimes you need to check the place where you connectt eh power cord to the laptop. That connection might be loose. Just push it in all the way and it should solve the problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS
The caps lock key absolutely doubles as the jaws key on a laptop. There is, though, a key on all of the laptops I have used, as well as my Acer netbook, that functions as a jaws key. It is the second key in from the left on the bottom row of keys, just to the right of the control key. Officially, I think it's called the function key, but don't quote me on that. I have worked as a computer trainer/technician for about three years now, and I've found this key on all of the laptops I have used, including my own. I have fouhnd that it performs very nearly all of the same functions as the caps lock key on a laptop. It's simply another option, that's all. What do you mean? When you press that function key, that is the key to the right of the left control in combination with other keys, F12 for instance, does it say the time? Or if you press that key wit F11, does it invoke the system tray thing? Is that what you mean by that being a JAWS key also? Because if that's what you mean, I can say that not all laptops behave like that so it would be quite confusing if you call that JAWS key by definition. Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS
I think she refers that using this key behaves like JAWS key in most, but not all cases. On my laptop, it will do so for instance pressing the function key and the semicolon is like pressing the CAPSLOCK (acting as JAWS key) to make a plus (or a PC cursor). The function key helps to turn the right side of the laptop keyboard into the numpad, the function that the Capslock working as the JAWS key does so. However, pressing it with the F12 for time, I never tried that. I think you will need to first assign this key in your global keymap file for that. However, I find using the function key for other tasks easier such as pressing it with the left arrow key to work as a HOME Key, with the right arrow key to make an END key, with the down arrow to make a PAGE Down etc. - Original Message - From: Ijemmer Ramos ijemmerjo...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, June 27, 2010 7:53 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] LAPTOP KEYS WITH JAWS What do you mean?
