Hi,
David Faren has put the instructions on the help page. The instructions for
everything you need to do is in a file by Jim Flusch. If you can get that
file, you will know step by step what to do. It is a One Drive link that is
on this user website. See if you can find it on the website
www.jaws-users.com/help
Also, I am sure that someone else will give you directions to get to
everything you need to know in this One drive link that is right on this web
site for this list.
You can do this without any sighted assistance. You will have no problem
upgrading, and as a win10 user myself, you will never look back. There is so
much good of having win10 that is much better for you than win7.
Take care, and I hope you can get a hold of that One Drive link on the web
site very soon and get started. Congratulations for upgrading. You will love
it.

I recall some discussion about what was necessary to get JAWS up and running
when transitioning from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I'm in the process of
upgrading a Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10. Currently, I have JAWS 16 on
the Windows 7 machine and I know to upgrade that to the current build of
JAWS 17, but do I need to do something with authorizations or removing JAWS
and reinstalling it? I don't remember the advice given earlier.

2015-09-20 Thread Scorpio Forever

Hi Kevin,

No, it did not work, though I could have sworn I posted that to the list,
but thank you very much for your help.

Not sure if you saw my detailed account of how I managed to Install Windows
10, but I basically had to shut down a number of background applications I
had running in order to make sure that the download/installation could go
through as it was supposed to. I also shut down my anti-virus/malware
altogether, as opposed to simply shutting down the active monitoring.

I also took the added precaution of disconnecting any peripherals I had
connected to the computer, making sure that it wasn't a possible hardware
conflict.

Having said that, I did manage to figure out that the SoundBlaster sound
card I had initially thought was the problem wa snot after all.

I still managed to install the Windows 10 upgrade despite it still being
installed on my system, so I've deduced it was a software issue all along.

If you have any questions, or if you need me to re-post my message that
detailed what I did, let me know, and I'll send it to you off list so as not
to place a second copy on the Jaws-users server.

Hi Jim,

Your information is incorrect.

Since he is using Windows 8.1, he only need download and install the latest
version of Jaws 16, then install Windows 10.

No need to re-install Jaws 16 once the Windows 10 is complete, as it should
come up working after the installation.

You're thinking about Windows 7, of which he is not using.

Hope this helps.

Hi Al, The answer is Yes, you need to reinstall Jaws 16 after upgrading to
w-10.
Here are the instructions again, I highly recommend following them for a
smooth upgrade experience.
*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or 32 bit version
depending on what system you have.
Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.
Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.
Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.
Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the
desktop.
very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking with
all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

I have a couple of questions about upgrading to windows 10.
I've finally been asked to upgrade from windows 8.1 to

One, how do I do a system backup to my external hardrive?
Second, do I have to reinstall JAWS once I upgrade to 10?
I'm currently using windows 8.1 with JAWS 16 on a Lenovo
laptop.

thanks,

I believe you need pro to setup a home group. If you don't know what that is
then it is doubtful you will need pro. It has to do with networking your

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 and classic view question?

2014-01-07 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Marilyn,
Sorry if I confused you, yes, I am talking about the Windows XP operating
system,
and using the Classic start menu.
Let me explain a little about that.
In Windows XP and Vista, you had a choice of what start menu you wanted to
use, either the classic, which refers to the Windows 98 start menu,
or, the XP or Vista start menus respectively.
You do not have that option in Windows 7 or 8, but you can customize the
start menu in Windows 7 somewhat.
I use the start menu in all versions of Windows that I have the same way,
I arrow up and down, and when I come to the item I want, I just hit enter,
it is the same as using the right arrow key.
In Windows 7 after pressing the Windows key, the start menu will open, and
the focus will be on the search box,
at this point, if you up arrow, you should find all programs, just hit
enter, and then you can arrow through your programs.
If you have had someone put things on the start menu for you, when the focus
is on the search box, just down arrow, and they should be there.
You can have everything you want displayed as a list, it just has to be set
that way just like in Windows XP.
If you need more, just sing out.
HTH,
Rick Justice

Tomorrow's another day, another way!
and if tomorrow never comes, problem solved!

So what you are saying is that you can work faster with the xp start menu
but does it have to be the xp operating system (I call it my xp computer)?
I''m with Gerald Levy on all of this and may just continue with xp. I

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 and classic view question?

2014-01-07 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

For me, in Windows 7, pressing the Windows key by itself will bring up the
Start Menu if you're on the desktop or any other window, the same as
pressing control+escape. Arrowing up and down thru the start menu will list
a certain number of the programs you have used, but not all programs on the
computer. When you're on the search box, you can right arrow to the second
column of the start menu and arrow up and down to your Windows user folder
and options like documents, computers, etc. As was mentioned, you can type
something in the search box and a list will pop up with things that match
what you type. Also when you're on the search box, if you up arrow one time
you will hear All Programs. Right arrow to get into the All Programs menu.
This Menu contains all the programs that have put entries into the All
Programs menu, the same as Windows XP, except for the addition of search and
back entries. The only difference between this All Programs menu and the
one in Windows XP, is that in Windows 7, the single program entries are
listed before the sub-menu entries. And once you arrow away from the search
or back entry, you can use first letter navigation to find what you want.

Marilyn,

If you go to the desktop and then press the windows key, you get to an edit
field. If you then arrow down, you'll find a list of all of the programs
that are in the computer, pretty much like what you have in XP. Doesn't that
happen for you?

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 and classic view question?

2014-01-06 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Marilyn,
Unless you use a third-party program
designed to change the GUI (graphical user interface), it's not going to
happen.
The only thing available in classic in Windows 7 is the appearance of
the Desktop.
The plus with Win7 over Win8 is that 7 still has menus in Windows Explorer,
8 does not.
Windows 7 does not give any option to change the start menu as in Windows XP
and Vista, but there is no need to be afraid of it,
just takes a little getting used to.
I don't find navigating it any faster as others have claimed
I work mainly from the start menu, and can still operate much quicker with
the Windows XP start menu.
HTH,
Rick Justice

Tomorrow's another day, another way!
and if tomorrow never comes, problem solved!

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 and classic view question?

2014-01-06 Thread Mike B.
Hi Marilyn,

To put your desktop into the Windows Classic theme do the following:

1. While on the desktop press the F5 key to make sure that nothing is
selected.
2. Press the applications key, arrow down to Personalize press enter.
3. You will now be in the Themes Gallery. here the different themes are in
columns. To find the Windows Classic Theme, arrow down to Windows7 Basic,
right arrow 1 time to Windows Classic Theme press enter. This should
switch you to the Windows Classic Theme.

Also, changing themes will probably change your Sound Schemes as well. So,
you might have to alter your sound schemes to get the sounds you want.
P.S. Happy Birthday to you January 7th! Have a great day!
Take care.
Mike

If you go to the desktop and then press the windows key, you get to an edit

that are in the computer, pretty much like what you have in XP. Doesn't that
happen for you?

with windows 7 and wlm
write your message and use
alt i
then I, A
now shift tab twice for the list of documents and use the first letter if

***
another way is go to the list of documents and
use the application key and up arrow to send to sub menu and right arrow

This is the reverse way as you start where the attachment is and it brings

Sometimes, you may need to tab or shift-tab. It might be in the listing of
accounts when you try to type in your password.

Jaws will say Logging on a second time, presumably because once you enter
the password, Windows will load your personal user profile and you have Jaws
set to talk at the startup screen and also when you start your profile.

Jaws performs equally well whether UAK is set to 0 or 67%, which is the
default. The UAK will often give dialogs if you try to run programs or
install a new program. Sometimes, the dialog may be covered up, but you
would press alt-Y to run or alt-N to deny the program access.

Some people elect to turn off UAK to avoid these annoyances. However, UAK
does isolate the operating sytem and your browsing from the effects of
malware which could run much more easily in XP.

I do a bit of tech work and recommend my clients keep UAK on, at least at
the 33% level. Even though I am technically competent, run an anti-virus
program, a malware program, a software and hardware firewall, I also elect
to run UAK on my own Win 7 PC. I know others who think that is overkill, so
if you choose to keep it off, that is your decision.
Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch

Hi all,

I've finally made the leap from Windows xp to Windows 7, and not a
moment too soon. The transition has been fairly smooth apart from the
whole virtual ribbon scene, but I have encountered one glitch I could
use some guidance on.

I have opted to have set a password for logging onto Windows. Jaws
will announce itself ready for action after the windows music sounds,
but won't always focus properly on the password field of the login
screen. Sometimes it will simply say logon dialog without allowing
me to type anything into it. Other times it will go straight there and
all will work perfectly. What strikes me is odd is that Jaws will then
announce itself as ready a second time once I have managed to log in
successfully. Is there a setting I should know about to eliminate this
issue?

Also, just wanted to confirm my suspicion that jaws works infinitely
better when the user account control is set to 0...is that right?

Many thanks for your help,
Michelle

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch

2012-08-23 Thread Dan Beaver
Hi,

I have seen this behavior lately as well. Just in the last 2 days Jaws
frequently does not seem to gain focus on the fields in the logon screen.

Last evening I even had to get my wife to use the mouse and click on the
password field in order for Jaws to recognize the field.

By the way, tabbing does nothing.

My wife said the cursor was on the password field but typing characters did
nothing either.

This is very strange. It is now so bad that this morning I had to reboot my
system to get so that I could log into my system.

I sure hope this one can be fixed quickly. I wonder if perhaps it is due to
some windows update or something.

Thanks.

Hi Michelle,

the part of the Win7 sign-on you can't change is the fact that you hear JAWS
start up twice. Win7 has a modular design, so there is a module for starting
up and a module for the rest of the operating system. I am probably not
explaining this correctly, but it is how I understand it.

Now for your log-on page problem. I am not sure what is going on, but 1.
Have you tried tabbing around to see if you can get to the password field?
2. Maybe the screen isn't maximized, so you might give that a try, or 3.
Have you tried alt-tab to see if you can focus on the log-on screen. With
that in mind, what does JAWSKeY-t have to say.

I have 2 windows 7 machines, and so far haven't had this problem, so this is

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch

2012-08-22 Thread Vincent Chaney Jr.
Michelle,

A shortcut you can do when the Windows music sounds are heard, you can
actually type your password and hit enter at this point. Personally I wait a
second and then enter my password plus hit enter. This will remove your
trying to figure what is focused on. Also, most of the time the password
field is in focus so you could just type in the password when JAWS speaks.
If you really want to read the current line, do the shift tab back to your
computer name and then tab back to the password field. This may also give
you comfort in believing you are really at the password field to type.

Regarding the User Account setting, I leave mine most secure (100 percent)
and have had no issues with JAWS running. I looked under the User Accounts
Help and copied the following:

Note
If you're using an accessibility device, such as a screen reader, we
recommend that you choose either the Always notify or the Default - Notify
me only when programs try to make changes to my computer UAC setting.
Assistive technologies work best with these two settings.

I've finally made the leap from Windows xp to Windows 7, and not a moment
too soon. The transition has been fairly smooth apart from the whole virtual
ribbon scene, but I have encountered one glitch I could use some guidance
on.

I have opted to have set a password for logging onto Windows. Jaws will
announce itself ready for action after the windows music sounds, but won't
always focus properly on the password field of the login screen. Sometimes
it will simply say logon dialog without allowing me to type anything into
it. Other times it will go straight there and all will work perfectly. What
strikes me is odd is that Jaws will then announce itself as ready a second
time once I have managed to log in successfully. Is there a setting I should
know about to eliminate this issue?

Also, just wanted to confirm my suspicion that jaws works infinitely better
when the user account control is set to 0...is that right?

Many thanks for your help,
Michelle

2012-06-28 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Steven,

It shouldn't be too difficult. Basically, you read it your
installation ID - a long series of numbers displayed in the activation
window - to the automated phone system. You'll want to use your JAWS
cursor to find these numbers. Then the automated phone system will
read back another series of numbers which you have to enter into the
activation window to confirm that you are authorized to complete the
activation. The phone system will ask if the activation was
successful, and you should answer yes or no.

It's probably better if your computer is nearby, because that way you
can make sure the numbers all match before you hang up.

Cheers,

Grant

2012-06-27 Thread David
No No No;
Checking list in the control panel is not the answer.
What you neede to do is;

1, navigate to the control panel,
Start menu edit box and type control,
You need to enter on control panel.

2, you most likely will land on a search edit box,
Tab once you should hear,
Category

3, press the spacebar,
Now you have choice,
Using the arrow keys,
Small icons,
Large icons,
Press enter on the small icons,
This will solve your friends problem.

for her to navigate its operating system more easily. Are there some
settings that she needs to change so she can have her computer set up either
like mine or a person that can easily use windows 7. She is willing to
learn windows 7, but, at the same time, is getting frustrated and wants to
go back to XP. How can I help her?

You can advise her to visit that site.

[JAWS-Users] Windows 7 Outlook 2003 question

2012-06-04 Thread Miriam Vieni
First: I've been having an issue when attempting to either save attachments
or attach a document to an email. I tried to save an attachment today and I
wanted it to go to Documents. But windows wouldn't allow me to save it to a
folder with that name. I finally saved it to one of the subfolders I'd
created within it. Can anyone explain how to save an attachment in the
Documents folder? I also have had difficulty retrieving a document to attach
to an email from there.

Second: I would have been quite happy to just read the attachment and was
told I could do this by using insert A. But this hasn't worked. Does anyone
have any other suggestions?

Third: Later, after having had to save the attachment to a folder other than
Documents, I converted an email to a text file and saved it. Usually, it
automatically gets saved in Documents. But it wasn't there. I found it in
the sub folder where I'd previously been forced to save my email attachment.
Obviously, the path was changed. Now, I don't know how to get it back to
where it's supposed to be, saving in Documents.

Hello there;
Well, I'm not sure if this works in outlook2003,
However,
In outlook2007outlook2010,
If you wish to add an attachment,
1, navigate to the folder where the file resides which you wish to attach to
an email.
Copy to clipboard.
Note you don't enter on the file just highlight and copy.
Now, open outlook2003,
Type in recipient's name/email,
Now, tab to subjectline, and type in subject,
Now tab to the edit/body of the message, and paste.
If you shift+tab you should see your attached file.
Let me no if this works with outlook2003.
As for saving attachments,
You probably need to navigate back to the default folder.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 Outlook 2003 question

2012-06-04 Thread David
Hello there;
Another way to attach a file is;
1, navigate to the folder where the file resides,
Which you want to add to an email message.
Note, do not enter on the file,
Highlight,
Press applications key,
Up arrow to send-to sub-menu,
You can either press enter, or right arrow to open,
Now arrow down and press enter on mail recipient.
Now your email client should open, you should land into the to edit field.
Hope this helps.

supposed to go so that's part of my problem solved. Thanks.

the folder where the file resides which you wish to attach to an email.
Copy to clipboard.
Note you don't enter on the file just highlight and copy.
Now, open outlook2003,
Type in recipient's name/email,
Now, tab to subjectline, and type in subject, Now tab to the edit/body of
the message, and paste.
If you shift+tab you should see your attached file.
Let me no if this works with outlook2003.
As for saving attachments,
You probably need to navigate back to the default folder.

[JAWS-Users] Windows 7 tune Up Utility

2012-03-14 Thread Marvin Hunkin

HI.
well.
one of my audio cds would not copy.
so had to open up four folders, for my folder called MYMusic inside my
Music folder.

then open my dvd which has the audio cd.
then Albums, then singles.
a lot of chrashes, and it just locks up the whole system, windows 7
professional 32 bit.

using jaws 13.0.718.
and says the folder is not responding.
and if i try to kill it in task manager, it takes about four goes, or i
just have to do a hard reboot.

i do not have a credit card or pay pal.
so is there a jaws

friendly tool, that will tune up my laptop.
and fix the issues i am having?
avg makes pc tune up, but no free version.
so that is out.
it is taking me forever.
as when i tried to copy the whole folder.
it hangs forever, and then get the error message that one of the files.
so, having to arrow through one file at a time, over 100 files.
hear the name, tab to the singles, albums,, singles, and my music folder.
and has crashed four times.
saying, windows folder not responding.
just getting frustrated.
can any one help?
