KR> Friday & Bummed Out.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
I know you guys have seen a lot of hype from me in the last two weeks on my
first flights reports. I have really enjoyed giving them to you but it is
with great dismay that I must be forced to vacate the world of aviation. You
see, I have reported that everything with my flights had been beyond
perfect. Well...truth is that I actually scared myself so bad to the point
that I have decided to sell my plane. My family has also been pushing me to
sell as they fear the possibilities of losing me or even being injured
severely. This decision has left me feeling very empty as I know I have made
many great friends over the last seven years. For more information and
specifications on the sale of my plane, please click on the following link:

KR> Pre Flight

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
This morning I headed to the airport to do some flying behind a Warp Drive
3-blade prop that I installed last night. This is one of the prop bank props
and is a 52" diameter. I set the pitch at 19° which is equal to 54" pitch.
Anyway, my static rpms yielded the same as my 2-blade Sterba 56x64 prop. The
big difference in static was that with the Warp Drive set at 54" pitch, I could
not hold the plane still at full static rpm. The brakes would not keep the
plane from creeping forward. With the Sterba 56x64 I could easily keep the
plane from moving. I then taxied to the beginning of the runway to do a
pre-flight run up. Rpm set, all temps looking good, right ignition - check,
left ignition - ENGINE DIED. The engine would run fine on my right ignition but
would die if I flipped the switch to the left ignition. I taxied back to the
hanger and started troubleshooting. The culprit was a set of closed points.
This distributor has 34 running hours alternating between ignition systems. I
did not have the correct allen wrench with me to reset the gap so I will do
that on my next trip to the airport.
I have sent my Sterba 56x64 back to Sterba for re-pitching. It will be a 54x54
when I get it back.

KR> Warp Drive Prop

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
I just returned from the airport after yet another YE HAA
flight. A perfect day for flying. I just may have to go back and watch the sun
set from 3000'. Anyway, I flew the 52" diameter three blade Warp Drive set at
17° which is equal to 48" pitch. The take off roll was much shorter than the
56x64 Sterba prop I was flying. Cruise was 135mph at 3500' and an rpm of 2950.
I like the Warp Drive with the exception that I noticed more vibration with it
than with my wooden prop. I sent the wood prop to Ed Sterba to get it
re-pitched to a 54x54. When I get it back, It will go back on my plane. Once I
fly the new Sterba prop and performance is still lacking, I will bite the
bullet and buy me an Ellison EFS3A carburetor and sell the EFS2 I am currently
flying.

KR> prop extension

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Aircraft Spruce sells prop spacers in thicknesses from 1/16" to 3/8" pre
drilled. They are on page 171 of the 2003-2004 catalog. $21.40 for the 3/8".
You could stack then but you probably would fare better having a machine
shop make you one like Langford suggested.

Hello Net

After accepting an invite from Keith, another KR net member to come to
Lansing MI for lunch, I went to the airport KPTK and hopped into the KR and
off we go. The wind at Pontiac was 160 at 11 and the runway was 090. No
problem getting off. Up up and away, heading to Mason Jewett KTEW airport
just south of Lansing. I made the trip at 3500 MSL with a heading of 260.
The air at 3500 was about 15kts and was not too bumpy. As I descended to
Mason, the air got real bumpy, the KR was weathervaining and rolling all
over the place. I attempted the landing twice and both times aborted,
finally deciding to return to KPTK. On the way back I landed at another
airport with a larger runway and managed it without too much difficulty. My
take off was nearly a disaster. The wind was 90 degrees to the runway at 15
gusting to 23. Not wanting to stay all night, I elected to depart. I kept
the tail down to gain more speed before liftoff, and that was not enough. I
ran out of right aileron and did not have enough to keep that wing down.
The KR came off the ground in ground effect and the spoiled wing lifted
until I reached about 15 feet and then I rolled into the wind faster then I
could correct. I have never had a take off that was that bad. All in all,
I would say that in the future I will stick with 10 @ 90. The gust was too
much for the KR. When I got back to KPTK, the controller asked if I wanted
runway 090 Left or Right, I replied that I wanted runway 180. The wind was
220 at 10. What an adventure.

KR> Crosswinds part 2

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
The flight report that Orma gave today about crosswinds was the kind of
report that we can gain much wisdom from . I too went to the airport to fly
and all I did was to taxi to the pump, fill em up, and taxi back to the
hanger. My crosswinds were 90° across 12-15 gusting 18. I decided not to
chance it thanks to Orma's story. So instead of flying, I took the time to
go over my plane thoroughly. Now I am ready for the next window of
opportunity.

KR> Mark Jones- elevator trim

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
So far, five flights for a total of 4.1 hours, in level cruise, I have had
to input only a slight amount of trim to keep it straight and level. Based
on what I have measured so far after landing, the trim tab has never been
more than 1/8" down which gives slight up elevator pressure. Remember too
that I am flying at 2" aft of the forward CG limit. If my CG were to move
back some, I most likely would have even less trim input. I never dreamed I
would love flying a KR this much. It is simply a riot to fly. The new
airfoil and tail feathers have got to be the single most improvement ever
incorporated in the KR. Keep building guys, total exhilaration awaits you.

Question for Mark J.-

Knowing that Mark L. has allowed for some adjustment in his horizontal stab
for nose up/down trim, what has your experience been with the flights you've

made so far? You have a MAC trim or similar, right? Has it trimmed out
pretty level? Trim setting at cruise anywhere near the center of travel?

Ideally, you'd put a level on the top longeron where you leveled to do W&B
and referenced wing incidence from, trim for level cruise at normal loading,

and see how close it is to level. Alternatively, you'd do a low pass over a

looonnng runway, level at cruise airspeed as you pass a photographer who
would snap a picture as you passed by (before your pull-up to clear
obstacles at the end of the runway), and review the picture to see how level

the fuselage was. This would be more fun ;o)

Orma, He is stating that if you land on the downwind edge of the runway and
cross to the upwind edge by the time you stop, then you have changed your
runway direction by a few degrees. Must be a pretty darn good pilot to do
that!!! Wouldn't it be nice to have big round runways then we could always
land directly into the wind.

Hello Joe

I'm sorry, I've read your lines three times and still don't understand what
you are talking about. Perhaps more explanation is in order. The bottom
line for me is to try an approach to an airport, if I don't feel perfectly
comfortable attempting the landing, I'll go somewhere else. At 80 MPH
slipping bumping doing all the other things it takes to land, I don't see
how you could remember any of that . Perhaps I have it all wrong and this
information is only to be used for takeoff.

KR> Greased the Landing

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
I must say that this evening I made absolutely the best landing yet in my KR.
Turned onto a one mile final at 1000', backed off on the throttle and settled
in at 100mph glide. I put the runway numbers just on top of the cowl and
lowered the speed brake to half down position. At a half mile out, I lowered
the speed brake all the way down and the drag really kicked in. Slowing to 70
mph at 100' Still slowing over the numbers, flaring, holding it off and
watching the runway off the left nose. I can not see the runway straight in
front of me for the last few feet. Touchdownsmooth as silkwow I was
impressed. This is just too much fun. Previous flights were made with no
aileron gap seals. Today after having installed the mylar gap seals, I achieved
a climb rate if 1200fpm at 100mph using the Warp Drive three blade prop and no
spinner. The aileron gap seals on the AS 50xx airfoil is a must. The improved
flying characteristics were very noticeable. Climb rate improved, slow flight
improved tremendously and aileron response seemed better. All in all, another
YHaa was vocalized as I rolled ou after landing. Get it
built guys, this is the most fun I have had in years.

KR> West Systems / Pinhole filler

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
West Systems epoxy makes an excellent pinhole filler. I know this by actual
experience. After you have done your fiberglass lay up, there is always the
pinhole issue to deal with. The simple solution is to mix up a batch (does
not take much) of West and using a plastic putty spreader, coat the area of
pin holes to be filled. West epoxy is thin enough where it will run in and
fill the pin holes and not just cover them. When doing this method, be sure
to squeegee off all excess. The West will completely dry and not leave a
sticky surface even with humidity in the air. DO NOT try this method of
pinhole filling with any other epoxy because you will wind up with a sticky
surface. I personally used Aeropoxy entirely throughout my aircraft and used
the West as a pinhole filler only.

If it was the same one as in Michigan last weekend, the pilot is a very
experieced RV formation pilot with over 600 hours in his taildragger RV.
The winds were 90 degrees, gusting to 25mph. The airplane touched down,
drifted off the side of the runway then flipped. The pilot will be in a

Be careful with the spring winds.

If it was the same one as in Michigan last weekend, the pilot is a very
experieced RV formation pilot with over 600 hours in his taildragger RV.
The winds were 90 degrees, gusting to 25mph. The airplane touched down,
drifted off the side of the runway then flipped. The pilot will be in a
neck brace for 12 weeks with the passenger having cuts and bruises.

Be careful with the spring winds.

KR> mounting the gear?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
With your plane at loaded weight, you should set the toe in as close to 0° as
possible. This I know from experience. I have worn all the tread off the inside
of my left tire because of improper toe in/out. Mine is out by 3/4°. I now have
a shim and tire on order. Camber, with loaded weight should be near vertical.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Yep, Jeff is now an A&P, having successfully negotiated the FAA written and
practical tests and having learned how to dismantle and rejoin Velcro
assemblies in the field, without calibrated tools or safety wire ;o) Here
is one A&P who knows and understands experimental, homebuilt aircraft!
Congratulations, Jeff! And to those who haven't seen Jeff's airplane, one

KR> Flight report

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
This weekend was a huge YeeHaaa one for me. I managed to get in
four separate flights and all were absolutely awesome. The KR2S has turned out
to be more than I ever dreamed possible. It is truly the most fun plane I have
ever flown. The last four flights had some pretty interesting winds with the
strongest being a steady 14mph with a 10° crosswind factor. No problem, the
tri-gear handled beautifully. The worst crosswind I landed in this weekend was
45° to the runway and 10mph winds. Again, absolutely no problem for the
tri-gear. I will be the first to acknowledge the skills that you KR taildragger
pilots have are something to be proud of but, I am so very happy with the
handling of the tri-gear that if I were doing it again, I would stay with the
tri-gear. Another thing that I have experienced with the combination of the
AS504X airfoil, the speed brake and tri-gear is that I have not experienced the
phenomena of floating halfway down the runway in ground effect. I have made
both fast and slow landings, low approach and high approach landings and find
that when I flare our for landing, my plane will cut right through the ground
effect, touchdown and stay down. I now have a total of 7.4 flight hours and
simply can not wait till my next flight.

KR> Corvair Engine Nose Gear Mount

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
No, not a problem. I just happen to have the first KR Corvair Tri Gear
engine mount that William and Mark designed on a napkin over dinner one
night and the only one flying that I know of on a KR. They did not include
the nose gear attachment. I installed that myself. I did not know they had
designed a specific mount for the tri gear. I just want to see how it
compares to mine.

Absolutely, I will be at Oshkosh. However, I doubt I will fly the KR there.
It is still in primer and I seriously doubt it will be finished by then. I
will however be flying to the KR Gathering, painted or not. There is usually
a scheduled forum once during AirVenture. This was hosted by Langford last
year and he is doing it this year. This is the only KR get together at
AirVenture that I know of. Two years ago, Jeanette Rand hosted a lunch
buffet catered in. Very nice I might add.

KR> Stability

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
The issue of stability has been a major topic of discussion since the KR
debuted. This issue is something that is becoming a thing of the past. If you
install the new AS504x airfoil and use the matching tail feather templates with
the new recommended incidences, you too can have a stable flying KR. The proof
is in the pudding. There is a new flight photo on the cover of my web page
which I took this past Saturday morning from 5,000', while in a hands off
level, right bank of my airport. Here is the link:
http://mywebpage.netscape.com/n886mj/homepage.html Photos like this would be
hard to accomplish in a stock KR with the original airfoils.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Bill,
It is not necessary to glass the boat. It would simply add weight. The primer
and paint will seal the wood. Some folks who plan on keeping their KR outdoors
will glass the boat thinking this will give them added protection.

KR> Stability

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
There are three of four KR's flying with the new airfoil. Troy Petteway, KR-2,
who reported a remarkable stability increase over his original RAF48 wings.
Bill Clapp, KR-2S, who reports an extremely stable aircraft. And mine which is
a KR-2S and is as stable as I could ever expect a KR to be. Unfortunately, Dead
Selby's KR-2S, which was the first 2S to fly the new airfoil, was sold to an
inexperienced pilot who stalled it and crashed it. Destroying the plane and
thank goodness the pilot is ok. Troy is the only one who has major experience
flying both wings. It would be nice if he were on the Net to tell us about his
experiences. The best thing you can do is study the information on the AS504x
airfoil and make the determination as to which airfoil best suits you. Here is
the link for detail AS504x information:

I need a clarification on the new airfoil. Are stability issues limited to the

those, what should I expect in the future? Slight instability? Major
instability? Please throw out some guidance. Thanks.

KR> 10G pullout/wing displacement

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Jim,
Years ago, as you indicate, I was a lot braver and younger too. I used to
fly a Warrior back in my home state of Georgia quite regularly. One of my
favorite things to do, along with my regular passenger, was to design our
own roller coaster in the sky. It was a pure blast to do as you say. We
would put the Warrior in a dive and pull it back into a real hard climb and
absolutely love the G forces. Then, as the air speed rapidly bled off, I
would push the nose over and we too would float out of our seats. Way too
cool.that is till the engine stopped because of fuel starvation. My
heart almost stopped the first time it happened. I did not have to do
anything to restart the engine since it was windmilling and as soon as fuel
hit the plugs, it fired right back up. Needless to say, this happened more
than once. Too young and foolish to know any better. It did teach me a thing
or two about unusual attitude.

KR> FOR SALE - Air/Oil Separator

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
I have an air oil separator that I am selling. I am offering it here to the
list before I put it on eBay. I did not have room on my firewall for this unit
and had to buy a smaller one. This is an aluminum used air/oil separator. The
dimensions are: 5 1/2" tall x 3 1/2" diameter aluminum canister. There is one
mounting tab at the top and one at the bottom. The inlet tube is 3/4 OD
entering from the left side (facing the firewall), the overboard breather tube
exits the bottom and is 5/8" OD. The return line exits the bottom and is an
AN-8. The AN fitting can be changed if desired. I also have a mating return
hose with fittings installed that goes with this unit. The breather tube on the
bottom is attached with a 1 1/4" nut and is removable for cleaning the inside
of the unit. Interested? Make me an offer. I will sell it to the highest offer.

I posted an accident that happened 1 week ago today with a KR2 in Cameron,
MO. Did anyone know the guy who was flying this KR? Minor injuries reported
with an engine failure on short final. Aircraft destroyed.

Anyone have a set of Corby Starlet plans for sale?

Thanks!

KR> Itching to fly.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
The weather here in Wisconsin has been less than acceptable for flying. The
winds have been very strong for the last few days. They are 21 mph gusting 33
right now from the NorthEast. We even had a few snow showers yesterday.
Regardless, I have been at the airport this past Friday evening, yesterday
morning at daybreak till noon and today daybreak till noon. I have gotten a lot
of things accomplished such as priming my cowling and front deck with Mar-Hyde
Ultimate 2K Primer. This was after I smoothed them out using Icing to perfect
the blemishes. Since I could not fly, I decided to change the oil using Shell
Rotella T 15w40 and a K&N oil filter. My oil pressure had been running a little
low so I ordered me a new spring from Clarks Corvair. I removed the old one and
it was 3/16" shorter than the new one in comparison. That explains the low oil
pressure. I also sealed the oil cooler air box where all the air entering the
box will be forced through the filter and not allowed to escape around the
outside of the oil cooler. I installed an air oil separator on the firewall and
connected the tubing. I was only running the stock Corvair breather on the top
of the engine venting the tube out of the bottom of my cowl. I was getting very
little residue on the belly but I was also cleaning it off after every flight.
Therefore, I decided to install the firewall mounted breather to hopefully
eliminate all the residue on the fuselage belly. Next, I decided to remove the
valve covers and check things out. After that I removed the top engine cover to
expose the inside. I inspected the connecting rods, cylinder walls, wrist pins,
and then crank and cam as best as possible. The engine has 43 hours on it and
all checked out perfect. By opening the engine and looking around gave me a
piece of mind that all was good to go.

KR> Icing

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Icing is an automotive filler used to fill spots and scratches that are less
than 1/8" deep. It is a polyester filling putty which needs a hardener. the
mix ratio is 50:1. It is stain free, tack free and exceptionally easy to
sand. It is formulated for final finish over body filler, rust pits,
pinholes, scratches, etc. This stuff sets in three minutes so you work small
areas at a time. It spreads very easily and a small amount goes a long way.
It is self leveling and fills pinholes not just covers them. You can sand
this in 15-20 minutes after applying it. It feathers easier than any other
filler I have tried. Made by USC (U.S. Chemical & Plastics) under part
#26006. It comes in a 24 oz tube with filler for $20.00. Get it at any auto
paint supply store. Try it, you will be glad you did.

I disagree with this statement. A high volume oil pump is not a high
pressure oil pump. The pressure regulating valve determines the oil
pressure. It does not matter if it is high volume or not. If you have a 40
psi spring you get 40 psi. You can install a 60 psi spring and that will
give you high pressure. I just replaced a 40 psi spring which was only
giving me 28 psi at cruise. Proof is in the pudding as I have a high volume
pump.

> Mark, 15W40 might be a little too thick of an oil for the weather you are
currently having. I would go with 10W30 or >even 5W30 as long as you have
snow on the ground, or the potential anyway. Remember, you are also cooling

I am using the Shell Rotella T per the highly recommendation of William
Wynne. Over the last couple of weeks I have discussed temps and oil with
William many times trying to determine why I was getting the low pressure
and high oil; temps. The oil is designed for higher operating temps
therefore providing more protection at our operating ranges. Ambient temps
here are prime for this grade oil right now. This oil is what William is
running in his Vairs. I will change grade as needed as temps dictate.

I absolutely agree that if you have stock, stay stock. I do not. I have remote
oil cooler and remote oil filter. This was my reasoning on using the high
volume pump. At the time I built my engine, William did not have the deep oil
pan and all aftermarket ones were simply too heavy to consider. William, some
time ago, made a post called the "Mother of all Oil Post". In this post he
stated that he once added two additional quarts of oil to his engine with a
stock pan and flew it with no problems. I remember reading somewhere that you
can add extra oil as long as the oil does not fill the lower end of the push
rod tubes. Since I do not have a deep pan, maybe I should fill the engine with
oil till it reaches the bottom of the push rod tubes. This is easily done with
the top cover off, then mark the dipstick accordingly. Thoughts???

I will study these charts and make the appropriate change. Possibly when he
advised me to run this grade, he was not thinking of our ambient temps.

KR> Oil Capacity

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
-Original Message-
Behalf Of Colin & Bev Rainey

Not being as familiar with the Corvair as other 6 cyl engines I don't know what
the "overfill" limit would be. What we always cautioned against happening with
an overfill situation was the crankshaft getting completely covered with oil
and then "beating" the oil like an egg beater and causing it to foam.

The crankshaft on the Corvair is at the top so this would not be an issue.
However, the cam is on the bottom therefore that could be an issue but not as
severe as a crank since the cam is much smaller and only has lobes. I have not
reinstalled my top cover yet and I will take a look at this when I am at the
airport tomorrow evening.

KR> Another great flight.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
I just returned from the airport after spending 1.2 hours in the air. Once I
arrived at the airport, I installed my valve covers, checked the oil level to
see where the level is with the top cover off. It is just as Mark L suggested
so I put the top cover back on and hooked up the hoses the air breather. Now
the time had gotten to 6:30 and I had an EAA meeting to go to at 7:30. I could
not resist the urge to fly so I hopped in and took off. After thirty minutes I
decided to land and go to the meeting. Well the landing was my best yet in the
KR...smooth as a baby's butt. I could not stand it, I wanted to do that again.
And I did. That landing was even better. I just had to go one more time. So I
flew around for a while and headed in as darkness was approaching. The third
landing was better then the previous two. I love this thing called KR flying.
Oh yea, after I made a few mods to my engine, both my oil temp and pressure are
now normal. Just gotta love it.and no I never went to the meeting. I
could not force myself out of the air till darkness forced me down.

KR> Two hour flight

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Today I received my re-pitched prop from Ed Sterba. I eagerly went to the
airport and installed the prop and took to the skies. The prop was a 56x64 and
is now a 54x54. I have been running a three blade 52" diameter Warp Drive set
at 48" pitch for the last eight hours of flight. Well today, I made a two hour
flight with the re-pitched prod. To make a long story short, the performance
numbers are basically the same with all three props I have tried. My conclusion
is that I get 1100" climb at 100 mph and 2950 rpm. I get a cruise of 130 mph at
level wide open throttle of 2950 rpm. My conclusion is that my carb is robbing
me of power which this engine is capable of producing. Plain and simple,
regardless of prop, I can only get 2950 max rpm in level WOT flight. The plane
flies great but I really want that extra power I am being robbed of. I must get
an Ellison EFS-3A and sell my Ellison EFS-2 which is actually rated for engines
up to 85 HP. I still will fly the EFS-2 until I can replace it with the EFS-3A.
I am having a blast flying this KR. I love landing the KR now that I have
gotten the hang of it. Also, today I was taxiing to the pumps and there was a
Cessna ahead of me. I pulled up and sat in the plane while two older gentlemen
exited the spam can. One of the guys started over towards me and the first
words out of his mouth were "when are you going to get a real airplane". Mind
you, I did not know these gentlemen and I replied to him, "I have a real
airplane". After the pilot finished fueling he approached and asked if that was
a KR. Then the next thing he asked was "what engine is that? It sure sounds
great!" With that, the conversation turned towards that pilot really talking up
the KRvaircraft and his passenger basically not saying anything else. So far
this plane has turned every head it has passed while on the ground. It is like
a sexy lady. Men just can't take their eyes off of it. Gotta love it.

KR> FOR SALE - Ellison EFS-2 Carburetor

I have an Ellison EFS-2 Carburetor with air filter that I would like to sell.
This carb is too small for the Corvair 110HP engine which is what I am running
it on now. The EFS-2 is rated for a max of 85 HP so if any of you are looking
for a very reliable carb for a VW or any other engine this could be your lucky
day. Here is the link to view the details:

KR> Learn from my mistake. (long)

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
This morning I was up at daybreak and could not wait to get to the airport. The
wind was calm and the temp was 36° and the sky was beautiful blue. What a
morning to fly!!! I got to the airport at 6:30 am and pulled the KR out in the
glistening sun. Did my pre-flight, hopped in and prepped for start up. Pumped
the prime and she fired on the first revolution. I taxied to the pump and put
six gallons in each tank on top of what was already there. That would give me a
comfortable two hours in the air. Taxied to 29 and did a run up. Pulled out on
the runway and firewalled it, rotated at 60, lifted off at 70, climbed out at
95 and was at pattern altitude as I turned on downwind. Held steady at 100 mph
on downwind. Turned base then final. I was on a 1.5 mile final and reduced
throttle to start bleeding off speed. Dropped the speed brake half way and
settled in at 90 mph. At one mile out, I dropped the speed brake all the way
down. Slowed to 80 by 1/2 mile and was at 70 over the numbers. I began my
flare, throttle all the way out, and settled down for a smooth as glass
landing. Had her stopped at mid field turn off (runway is 3000'). I then taxied
back to runway 29 and prepared for departure. All was clear, I made the call,
firewalled itrotation again at 60 and lifted off at 70 mph. She climbed to
about 300 feet above the ground and stopped climbing. Speed had only reached 80
mphthe PUCKER FACTOR was really setting in as I started looking for a field
to set down in. The engine was running smooth and strongall gauges were
right onwhat's happening...I stayed very calm and began checking
everything. Throttle full...mixture rich...carb heat offall gauges were
still reading perfect except the altimeter and airspeed. I was clearing farm
silos not more than 200 ' and I think I saw the farmers daughter in the buff in
a hay stack. So, has anyone figured out the problem? All of a sudden it hit me
like a brick wall. I did not raise my speed brake after I made the last
landing. As I raised the speed brake, the airspeed quickly reached
100...110...120 and I pulled back on the stick and she climbed like a homesick
angel. Thank God. Well after I peeled my butt loose from the seat and
relaxed, I continued on for a 1.3 hour flight.

Now, before you guys start flaming me, I was not going to tell this story on
the list but the more I thought about it, the more I felt you could learn from
my mistake. Yes, I have laminated check lists I use for every phase of flight
but I made them long before I installed the speed brake so it is not on the
check list. Second, I have not installed a position indicator on the speed
brake but now have the plans done to do so using micro switches and LED's for
indicator lights. So, learn anything? I did. I know the KR will take off with
the speed brake down but I would not advise doing it. I honestly think by
staying calm and level headed and meticulously diagnosing the problem, saved my
butt today. Man I love this KR stuff. Glad I am still with you guys and I can
not wait till tomorrow morning to fly again.

KR> Ribs, Foam and Plywood

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones

-Original Message-
FROM: Serge VIDAL
Questions:

- I intend to use 40mm (1.57") extruded polystyrene foam, with big
lightening holes, plus a layer of 1 mm plywood (0.04"). How does that
sound?

Good

- What should I use to glue the plywood to the foam? (I have been told
about some glue that they use in the construction business, any idea what
that would be?)

I used "Pro Bond". Use a squeegee to spread it around and weigh the foam down
while it dries because it does expand but only very little. The "Pro Bond" will
seep into the foam and adhere extremely well.

- What should I use to glue the foam to the skin? Epoxy plus
microballoons?

Yesdo not substitute this with any other method.

>Steve

On the piano hinge for my speed brake I didn't use and rivets or
fasteners other than epoxy/flox and a layer of glass. All my
blind nuts on the cowl and metal surrounds inside access panels
are all done with epoxy/flox also.

On a piano hinge I would drill 1/8" holes, maybe 20 or 30 per foot,
lay a bed of epoxy/flox and cleco or otherwise hold the hinge
in place until cured. I added one layer of glass over the hinge
also when floxing it in place. The epoxy/flox will "ooze" up through
the holes and bond with the glass overlay. I've had my speed
brake deployed at 110mph indicated on many occasions and
it's still solid as a rock.

As always, your results may vary !!!

KR> WAF

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Garry,
Originally, I had set up my wing for the RAF airfoil...then I decided to
convert to the AS5046. My center spars were already installed. This
conversion required raising the rear spar for the correct incidence. I had
already installed the WAF's and had to re-do the lower rear spar WAF's. This
was because raising the rear spar also means lowering the rear spar outboard
tip to achieve the correct washout. Now, I had to glue a dowel in all the
bottom WAF holes on the rear spar and re-drill them. I used T-88 and
hardwood dowels. I re-drilled the holes very slowly using a jig and had a
perfect match. Absolutely no problems. Take your time, use tight fitting
dowels and T-88 and you will be good to go. Be sure that you coat the inside
of the bolt holes thoroughly with T-88 prior to installing the dowels. Use a
Q-Tip with plenty of T-88 to coat the inside of the holes. Also coat the
dowels before inserting them. The majority of the T-88 will ooze out as you
push the dowel in and that is ok. You will have a well repaired hole.

KR> wing gap seals/covers

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Go to Menards and get some white aluminum roof flashing (Home Depot only has
brown...at least up here). It comes in 10 foot rolls in varying widths,
Simply wrap it around the wing starting at the top rear. Use two very small
wood screws to hold it in the trailing edge flox, tow screws in the rear
spar, two in the main spar, wrap it around the leading edge and do the same
on the bottom of the wing continuing to the trailing edge. Takes all of 15
minutes to do both sides. Works like a charm and it is already painted
white.

KR> wing gap seals/covers

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Using double sided tape is a good idea. However, only use 3M #444 double sided
tape. That is what we use on the Mylar gap seals and that tape is very strong
and will not let go until you peel it off. The down side is that 3M #444 is
very hard to find at a local store so here is a link where you can buy it.

I second Mark Jones suggestion on the aluminum flashing, painted
or otherwise.

I wanted a quick cover last year when the KR was finished and
the "glass" covers didn't turn out well. I purchased a 10 foot
roll and cut it down the middle (two 3" strips) and used one
on each wing. One wing has the lead edge a bit off so it
would not wrap and line up to the trail edge on the bottom side.
I cut the piece on the bottom side just around the lead edge,
overlapped it and used two small screws at that point. It's
amazing how little it takes to hold the thing in place. I was
going to use double-sided tape but afraid it would pull the
paint on removal. I may go that route anyway at some point.
I'm using basiclly two small screws on the top at the rear spar,
two screws on the bottom at the rear spar, two small screws
about mid-cord on the top and probably on the bottom also, I'd
have to look. I would bet that two-sided tape would
probably hold them in place without any screws.

The plus side for the alum over glass is that it is thinner and
nearly disappears when finished out correctly. I'll bet it's
cheaper also if you figure the cloth, resin , and time to
glass them.

Allen,
Using MonoKote is a very good possibility. I have thought about it many time as
I also build RC planes. As a matter of fact, my son and I are building one for
him right now and we just finished covering his fuselage. The whole time, I was
thinking about how it would be way too cool to do a complete KR with MonoKote.
Hm. I just wonder. Anyway, I was think about doing some trim striping etc
with MonoKote on my KR. The gap seal is a good idea too.

121 short days till the Gathering. WORK WORK WORK on your KR to get it ready. I
think there should be a new award for KR that flew in with the most work to be
done on it before it is finished. Just think, a semi finished KR would give

Colin, you just had to tell the world that I am a large KR pilot. But then,
those that have met me know that. Here are some real world specs.
My KR2S: 771 lbs empty weight
Fuel capacity 24 gallons: 144 lbs
Pilot 6'00": 230 lbs
Total: 1145 lbs.
I have flown my KR with full tanks which made this weight of 1145 lbs. Take
off roll is longer at full tanks but she will lift off at 65-70 and at 90
mph climb out she will give me 1100 feet per minute. This is with a Corvair
engine with a carb that is rated for a 85 hp engine. I am willing to bet
when I install my new carb in the next couple of weeks, The performance
numbers will even get better.

In the exact same plane, CG should not move much. Cockpit space width wise

Mark, Good luck with your sanding. My KR is complete with the filling and
sanding, it has been primed, sanded, painted, clear coated, sanded again for
the graphics and hopefully the graphics will be complete in about two weeks.
Then the inspection and the first flight. My theme will be a KR wrapped in
the American flag in 3 diminsion from cowling to the empinage with flames
just on cowling and a small portion of the wing. It will be tastefully done
but not overdone as most planes with this theme is. The flag will have the
appearanace of waveing in 3D, a small WWII nose art of the Stature of
Liberty using airbrush technique will be on the right side of the fuselage
just behind the canopy. The tail numbers will be 22 carat gold leaf with
shadows. A volunteer model will be used for the face of Miss Liberty.
Hopefully the 40 hours will be flown off by Mt. Vernon time so that I can
fly it to the KR Gathering. My KR may not be the best around, but I will be
a proud owner. Have fun sanding.

KR> Cockpit size

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Absolutely...Simply install the rudder pedals to meet your feet. I actually
moved my firewall 2" forward than what the plans call for because I needed more
leg room and also widened my cockpit by three inches. That is the beauty of the
KR, you can custom build it to fit you.

Thanks Mark. With the weight distribution (larger mid-section) and shorter

KR> final weight and balance

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
I just put my plane on the Atkins diet! There are a lot of things I could
have done to save weight. My turtle deck is one area. It is about two inches
taller than stock and way too thick as are my wing skins. Also I have a lot of
unnecessary things like strobes, nav lights and landing lights, electric speed
brake, etc, etc... As I was building, I had one goal in mind and that was to
make a safe cross country flying machine. Passengers will be few and far
between as my wife will not even fly in small spam cans. The kids are very
light weight so when they fly with me that will be no biggie. The nose gear
adds a few more pounds as does the aluminum wing tanks. I added 2 inches in
front of the main spar to the fuselage as well as widened it by 3 inches. Maybe
a lighter battery would help or I could ditch that heavy T&B indicator that I
consider not needed and replace it with a simple ball slip indicator. There are
a lot of things to lower the weight but I am happy with the plane the way it is
and the easiest way to lower gross weight would be for the pilot to drop about
40 pounds.

I'm not exactly sure what it was that I left out, but hope it wasn't
important! All I can think of at the moment would be the kitchen sink.
There are several places where rethinking and redoing things (like the
airfoils) cost me some weight. I'm pretty sure I could build it 10-15
pounds lighter next time around. But keep in mind that I have all the nice
stuff like huge electric flaps, full electrical system, giant 130 horsepower
engine, landing, nav lights, and strobes, redundant electrical system, two
fuel pumps, dual sticks, adjustable horizontal stabilizer, double-walled
wing skins, etc. It all adds up, I guess. I just weighed my wings and they
are 48 pounds each, but keep in mind that all bellcranks, cables, and
connectors are part of my wings, rather than the airplane (like most other
KRs). But surely your average KR wing must be far less, especially
considering the size of my flaps, ailerons, and aileron counterweights.

I've elaborated some more on the weight and balance at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/weightandbalance.html , and provided links
to the spreadsheet and a pdf file of it for those who don't have Excel...

KR> Legal to carry passengers?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
The FAA is underscoring regulatory requirements for pilots who fly passengers
in homebuilt aircraft. A new notice would restrict them to flying passengers
only in planes in which they are qualified and experienced. Currency and
proficiency rules apply to those who take people for rides in their
experimental aircraft and EAA says current pilots have until Aug. 31, 2005, to
prove they have the necessary category and class ratings for the aircraft they
fly. Those who always fly solo will not need to fly through the bureaucratic
hoops. Under the new notice, which was issued April 21, affected pilots will
have fill out a form and make sure their recreational or higher certificate is
in order. Flying passengers requires that the pilot have at least five hours as
PIC in the category, class, make and model of the experimental aircraft in
question between Sept. 1, 2004, and Aug. 31, 2005. An authorized flight
instructor must make a logbook entry attesting to the pilot's proficiency with
the aircraft and then the pilot must show the log to a designated pilot
examiner or FAA Operations Inspector. A new pilot certificate will then be
issued restricting the pilot to flying that particular experimental aircraft
(or any others for which he or she has done the paperwork).

KR> KR speeds

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Take off roll rotate at 60 mph, lift off is between 65-70 mph.
Climb 90 mph for 1150 fpm climb.
Enter downwind at 100-110 mph.
Reduce power and turn base, 90 mph base leg.
Turn final, drop speed brake 1/2 way down maintain 85 mph.
1/2 mile out, full deflected speed brake, speed bleeds to 80 mph.
Over the numbers at 70 mph.
Flare and hold off till touch down at 65. With the new airfoil, my KR will not
float far in ground effect, rather she will set right down and stay there.

Note: I have made landings at speeds as high as 90 mph at touchdown but used
about 3/4 of the runway to stop at high speed landing. Touching down at 65 mph
my KR will stop in 1/3 or the runway length. I use a 3000' paved runway.

OK, I hate to be this way, but this one's for real KR pilots only. Please
send me your speedsrotation, climbout, pattern, approach, and
approximate touchdown speeds, and anything else that a prospective KR test
pilot might need. And it might not hurt to remind me what engine you have
in it, and whether or not you have flaps or belly board. I might need these
one of these days...

KR> New Builder Question!! HELP

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Larry,
Stretching and widening an already made boat is not worth the trouble.
Stretching is simpler as you could scarf and reinforce everything but to widen
it is another matter. You would have to split it down the middle. Just not
feasible. I agree with Chris Therouxstart from scratch and build the boat
to your needs. Building the boat is actually one of the simpler task of
building a KR.

I need to know if a standard KR Boat can be stretched and widened to become
a KR2S. The boat is in good shape and has retractable gear which will be
removed for tri-gear. I am really wanting to put a corvair engine on this
bird.
I am just wondering if it would be better to start from scratch or can I
have a head start by getting this boat to work.

Thanks,

I drove my wife's Audi to tow the plane, while she followed in my GTI.
Then we ran back home and each carried a wing back. She helped me get the
wings installed, and afterward gave me a big hug and said something like
"welcome to your dream"...

Mark,
You have a real jewel of a wife there. Many of us envy you. Tell Jeannie we are
proud that she supports you so. Through my seven years of building, my wife
never supported me. As a matter of fact, there were a couple of times she
threatened the plane with a chain saw. Now that it is flying, she is starting
to show more pride in it in the fact that we now own an airplane. Funny thing
is that she told me I should upgrade to a larger plane so we as a family can go
places. HaI am going places in my KR. She can drive......

KR> Almost 100

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
It sure is quiet on the Net today. So, do all of you realize it is only 105
days till the KR Gathering. If you are still only thinking about going to the
Gathering, go ahead and make the commitment to be there. The rest of us would
sure love to have you attend. If your plane is getting close to being finished,
this is the motivation to get yourself in high gear and fly to the Gathering.
There will be a new breed of KR's at the Gathering this year with a lot of
exciting ideas and modifications. New records will be set again in both planes
and attendance. I WANT YOU to help us make this happen by being there, whether
you fly or drive or hitch hike. We are calling a family meeting September 9-11
and expect all family members to be there. You do not want to be absent because
if you are, you will miss the most exciting KR event of the year. Plus, you
could be the topic of discussion and not be there to defend yourself. BE THERE.
If you are a die-hard KR fanatic, I will see you in 104 days. :-)

KR> FAA bans drug use.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
Despite what you thought of the advice your mother may have given you, it
actually might make you go blind if Viagra, Cialis or Levitra are part of the
mix. And while we normally don't deal with these sorts of subjects, word out of
the Food and Drug Administration that the use of these drugs to combat erectile
dysfunction has caused "sudden, irreversible blindness" in 43 men has some
significance for pilots. According to a television news report out of
Washington, D.C., it's because of those potential vision problems that the FAA
bars pilots from taking the drugs within 24 hours of flying.

I was always told the big M would make a young man go blind. Must have been a
myth.

Gentlemen and Ladies (I know of two building KR's)
I did receive my EFS-3 and installed it. I used the exact airbox on the
EFS-3 that I had on the EFS-2. My static rpm (cowl off) was 2750 with the
EFS-2 and 3100 rpm (cowl off) with the EFS-3. I was ecstatic over the
difference. With the cowl on, the EFS-2 gave me 2650 sucking warm air from
inside. The EFS-3 dropped to 2950 sucking warm air inside the cowl. I made
my first flight with the EFS-3 yesterday. The EFS-3, in flight, produced
3000 rpm. The EFS-2 would give me 2950 rpm in flight. Airspeed with both
carbs was 135 mph. I was totally frustrated and wanted to throw my hands up
and give up. The EFS-3 should be giving me much better performance so here
are my next steps. Verify my distributor timing advance is giving me full
advance. Install ram air. Using cool outside air and ramming it should give
me more power. Re-design my airbox. So, if I were to leave everything like
it is, I am no better off with the EFS-3. Hopefully I can get more power. As
always, all comments and suggestions are welcome.
