[lace] Lace Day

2015-06-16 Thread Susan
Thank you Robin! I was scratching my head as I too thought that Lace Day was
in the fall. This is NOT to discourage anyone from having a Lace Day, but if
we could be a bit more collaborative when planning events, we would have a
greater impact.Especially if we are contemplating this from an
international perspective! Perhaps LOKK, OIDFA, IOLI & Lace Guild UK (& any
other interested parties) could reach a consensus? Our Charter Chapter held a
mini event last Saturday, June 13th but we called it a Lace-In. The scones,
strawberry jam & clotted cream helped immensely! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie

[lace] Lace Day

2005-03-09 Thread Janice Blair
As the lists seem to be a little quiet I thought I would also post another date
for your diary.

Lacemakers & Collectors Exchange (L.A.C.E. ) of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, will
be holding another Lace Day in Downers Grove on Saturday June 11. Vendors will
include Lacy Susan, The Lacemaker, Kenn van Dieren and other local beading and
knitting vendors. Al Frederickson will also have his great bobbin tables for
sale. Lunch will be catered again at a cost of $10 which includes roast beef
or turkey sandwich, green and pasta salads, a brownie and beverage, but you
need to contact Nancy Dunham to reserve a ticket.

We will be having 2 hour workshops on Saturday at a cost of $10 each. Susan
Wenzel will be teaching a Beginning Bucks with Ground Workshop, Tracy Jackson
will be teaching Elizabethan Lace and Gwen Wylie will teach a Beginners Bobbin
Lace workshop. On Friday June 10, Susan will also be teaching a Torchon
Christmas Ornament class from 10 - 4:30 in Clarendon Hills at a cost of $35.
Names are being taken for these workshops. LACE members have first chance at
the workshops but if you are interested and want to make sure that you don't
miss out, you can join LACE for $12 and also get our great newsletter. If you
are interested in lunch or workshops contact Nancy Dunham at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[lace] Lace Day

2006-03-06 Thread Sue
Dear Spiders,
Just thought you would like to know about the Norfolk Lacemakers lace day on
Saturday, it was a great success with nearly two hundred lacemakers turning
up to join us in a lovely day of lacemaking, shopping and a brilliant talk
from Jan Jefferson on "Amish Quilts". She brought with her some lovely
quilts and as well as telling us about quilt making she also gave us a wide
insight in the way the Amish people live. We had a very successful raffle
and made over £200 for the local children's hospice.
Great day, looking forward to the next in April when we will attend Suffolk
Laceday.
Happy lacing

[lace] lace day

2006-05-05 Thread Janice Blair
Hi All,
My DH's business trip in the UK has changed and we find we have a spare day
before driving up to Tamworth for the lace day that Jane posted about. Can I
get suggestions of a place to go between Heathrow and Tamworth that would be
worth spending some time at. We have been to Stratford and Coventry
sightseeing when we lived in the UK. Is Oxford worth a visit and is there any
chance of lace on our journey?

2006-05-10 Thread Jane Partridge
A few days ago I tried to send the following reply to Janice concerning
places to visit between Heathrow and Tamworth. I've just had it bounce
back, so apologies for forwarding it to the list but the information may
be of use to others visiting the UK, too.

Janice Blair <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes
>Is Oxford worth a visit and is there any
>chance of lace on our journey?

The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford did, I think, have some textiles, but
last time I was there it was closed for refurbishment - there is a
website for it so you could check if it is open again - on the other
hand parking charges in Oxford are horrendous (they try to discourage
it!) and the shops aren't any different to anywhere else. I'm not sure
whether you can visit any of the Colleges.

My cousin lives in Witney, which isn't far from Oxford (off the A34) -
there are a couple of bookshops (second hand - rather like the ones in
Lichfield) worth a mooch and Witney Antiques (100 Corn Street) is Joy
Jarrett's shop famous for the sampler collection - there is an annual
exhibition in October, when she loans other samplers to make a themed
exhibition, but I'm fairly certain there are a good number on display
the rest of the year. The 1yd square piece of Binche is very likely not
to have sold yet (I think the price tag is about £15,000) and well worth
seeing! Harvey took me to eat at The Evenlode (you pass it, on the A34,
on the way from Oxford to Witney) which was reasonable - I got the
feeling he wasn't impressed with the choice of eating places in the town
centre!

If you use the A roads rather than the motorway (M40), you could mooch
slowly up through Banbury and Evesham and then to Redditch, before
picking up the M42 at Bromsgrove. Just outside Redditch at Studley is
the Forge Mill Needle Museum and Bordesley Abbey (and The Washford Mill
pub, which used to be a needle mill - we've been off and on over the
last ?30 years, and the food has varied according to management from
reasonable to excellent). There is often an exhibition of some kind of
textiles in the Museum, which really opens your eyes as to the
conditions the needlemakers worked in. In the Bordesley Abbey Visitor
Centre (same site) there is a sample from the Sheldon Tapestries (or at
least, was) - kept under a protective velvet cloth which you need to
lift, but it has a silver lace edging - dates back to the 1670s or
thereabouts. Phone number is 01527 62509 if you want to check opening
when you are here. At Bromsgrove, or rather, just outside (on the
Birmingham side) there is the Avoncroft Museum of Buildings if you are
into that sort of thing. I once bought a glass bobbin there! A lot will
depend on the weather, it can be a mud bath if wet. Redditch itself
these days is a bit like the Bermuda Triangle for getting lost! Banbury
and Evesham are reminiscent of Cotswold-like antique shop towns. Hanbury
Hall (National Trust) is between Bromsgrove and Redditch, and there is
also the Jinny Ring Craft Centre - you go out towards Stoke Prior from
Avoncroft to get to it.

A lot depends on the sort of thing you would be interested in seeing - I
can't think of anything specifically lace, but I think it was Hanbury
where there was an interesting whole-quilted bedspread. If you Google
for Workbox magazine, they put their What's On on the site, so you might
pick up on a couple of other things from that.

Pity you're not coming into Luton - otherwise you would have had the
Luton and Bedford museums to hand!

Norfolk Lacemakers held their annual laceday on Saturday which was a
great success we had quite a few suppliers including Sarah Jones who
made some lovely commemorative bobbins for us. The speaker was Tanya
Elliot who gave us a talk on her re-creation of Mary Tudor's Wedding
Dress. The material alone cost £100 per meter and it took 10 metres,
it took her 3 weeks to do the embroidery alone, it was an extremely
interesting hour. No one actually recorded what colour the dress was
that she wore for her wedding but through much research and elimination
it was thought to be purple and gold with real gold thread for the
embroidery, it is said to have cost the same amount of money as a
warship would have done in that day which was one way to say how rich
and powerful she was . From start to finish it took Tanya three years
to complete and we are all looking forward to her next visit as she will
be able to bring the dress with her unfortunately we could not have it
on Saturday as it is on show at a museum on the South Coast. If ever
you get the chance to have Tanya as your speaker grab it with both
hands, I think you will be extremely happy, we certainly were.

[lace] Lace Day

2008-06-22 Thread Anne Nicholas
Hi everyone,

I have been busy preparing for our annual Lace Day and have noticed a big
decline in sales of tickets and wondered if anyone else has noticed this too?

Our lace days have been held for nearly 30 years and we used to sell 100
tickets and have a waiting list. I have noticed that each year the number goes
down and we are seriously considering making this our last lace day as we are
not even covering the cost of renting the hall this year.

In this light I am writing to tell you about the Isleworth Lace Day that is to
be held next Saturday 28th June.

We are 4 groups of lacemakers who are all taught by the same teacher (Julie
Nicholls) and we all come together for our lace day once a year.

This year we have 3 suppliers attending who are Makit, Fireside Reflections
and Lacewing Designs. Julie will be giving a talk and demonstration on
mounting lace.

The lace day is to be held at St. Stephens Church Hall, Parkside Rd Hounslow,
Middx. which is close to the M3 and M4 motorways and a 10 minute walk from
Hounslow mainline station (direct from Waterloo)

Tickets are avaiable on the day at the door and shoppers are welcome at any
time in the day.

Please email me for any more information and we look forward to seeing you for
a great day of lacemaking.

2008-06-22 Thread Wendy Davies
Hi Anne

I noticed this as well at our lace day in May, there was half the number there
than last year.

I heard that it is mainly down to who is giving the talk and who the suppliers
are as to how many attend which is wrong in my opinion. The people that
organise these lace days for us put a lot of effort into them so that we can
have a nice day, so I think that we should make every effort to go. I like to
go to see what new patterns, threads etc that have come available also to
catch up with other lace makers and see what they are doing. All in all a
great day out, here in this part of the country we only have the one a year so
it is definately a not to be missed.

Had a really good day at Wymondham Lace Day in Norfolk. The speaker was
Eric Sutton and his wife from Acorn Bobbins U.K. he makes the most beautiful
bone bobbins and his talk was how he makes them. The bone he collects
personally every fortnight from the abattoir and after cutting, boiling and
other processes he is lucky to get two bobbins out of one cows leg bone,
believe me I was surprised in how much was involved in producing such a
lovely finished item no wonder bone bobbins are expensive. (just a satisfied
customer no involvement with co,)

Lots of lovely goodies to buy plus I won a book on the raffle, also
purchased some very nice antique wooden bobbins which were being sold in aid
of charity.

Homemade cakes with tea this afternoon.

Met loads of old friends and went home all talked out , a very happy puppy.
Roll on next laceday.

Firstly - Happy Australia Day to all Aussies world wide.

On Saturday, the Victorian Branch of the Aust. Lace Guild held its first
Lace Day for the year, and I thought you might like to know that "Debbie of
Mozambique" was there. She arrived safely in Oz, and had put her lacemaking
gear in her suitcase, after all, I think, so got it through security OK.

In hindsight, I remember meeting her when she was here a couple of years
ago, I think. She looked vaguely familiar!
It is SO nice to meet up with Arachneans, and chat face to face.

She seemed to be enjoying the day, and soaking up the atmosphere "like a
sponge"!! I think she was having a large dose of "Lace Therapy"!!!
She was given a couple of other, small, lace days to go to, and I am hoping
to get to one of them myself. They are small groups who meet regularly in
private homes.

Overseas visitors are always made most welcome at these Lace Days, so anyone
contemplating coming to Oz - and Melbourne in particular - Please come to a
lace day. We would love to meet you. There are a few of us Arachneans who
meet there. And suppliers are there in the morning, if you need some
"retail therapy", as well!!

grateful that she is willing to drive 4 hours to bring her stuff to our

In planning for hosting a local lace conference, we can come up with this
one supplier, a bobbin painter, a bead person, a romanian point lace
person, and the lace video maker. Next we will contact suppliers and
bobbin makers at a greater distance to see if any are willing to travel
here, or try to arrange for a 'Shop in a Box' from some of them. One of
our people will be the sales clerk for the items sent to us in the
mail. It's mostly bobbins that come this way. Sometimes a dealer 1000
miles away will come to a conference but we don't count on it in
advance. It's a three day drive each way, for a one day sale.

Sometimes it's hard not to turn green with envy when I read about all the
lace days and lace fairs across the big water. Be grateful for what you
have, and make the most of it. (Hmaybe I should start a third
career and become a supplier. We need someone around here to do it. )

[lace] Lace Day event

2011-04-08 Thread Carolina de la Guardia

Hello Arachneans,

I would like just to say that next 8th. May will take place the annual
lace day event of "The Diada". This will be the 24th Edition, organised
by The Catalonian Lace Guild (Ass. Catalana de Puntaires), in the
location of Berga, 109 Km from Barcelona, 1,30 hours by car.

It is foreseen the participation of 2.100 lacemakers and 40 vendors.
So, if anybody is going to travel to this part of Spain, it is a great
lace day for visiting.

In addition, our Arachnean Antje Gonzalez (The magazine Director), is
going to show the new Lace magazine (English and Spanish): TWIST AND
CROSS (VUELTA Y CRUZ), intended to lacemakers of different levels, with
patterns, excellent diagrams and articles. It is a great new for Spanish
lacemakers as there is almost nothing published in Spanish, at the
present time.

A new web related with the magazine is under construction at:
http://www.vueltaycruz.es/index.html

Kind regards.

[lace] Lace Day in Spain

2016-05-06 Thread Susan Vossier
Jeri, you're quite right, I should have said thank you before. Thanks to
Carolina de la Guardia who announced the day in Ripoll on 5th June, I'm
actually going to be able to go! Like Agnes, I"ve been dreaming about this
for some times, but I never seem to know in advance, and it's too late to
organise. This year I can stay with my son in the French Pyrenees and get
a train from Puig Cerda! Thank you so much Carolina!

In fact, a big thank you to Everybody. You probably can't imagine the joy I
get from the digest about my favourite subject in my native language, which
I rarely speak, except with language learners .

So THANK YOU ALL, merci, Danke, Gracias, diolch yn fawr etc

2005-11-09 Thread Bridget Marrow

This is a query for British arachnes:

Does anyone know the date of the next Cockfosters (North London) lace day?
It's usually quite early in the year (? February), and I expected details to
be in the latest edition of Lace, but there is nothing there, nor on the
Lace GUild website.

[lace] Lace Day report - PLS

2006-10-08 Thread Alice Howell
We are much too far for Ithaca even though I wish I
could go. However, the Portland Lace Guild had their
annual Lace Day yesterday -- and celebrated their 35th
year anniversary.

We are lucky to have one lace vender with the full
range of supplies who is willing to drive three hours
to get to us. We also had 4 specialty venders with
their things, plus a consignment table for members.

Four Make It and Take It projects were set up in the
hall for people to do on their own. There were three
small classes for those interested -- a Torchon leaf
pattern, tatting, and Romanian Point Lace sample
project.

The guild provides large submarine sandwiches, and,
this year, an anniversary cake. Members bring snack
foods to go with this. There's always lots to eat.

Everyone got door prizes, and one person got a Grand
Door Prize of a lacemaking video. (Thanks, Henzel
Productions!!) This year it was a new lacemaker, so
the video will be put to good use.

By the end of the day, our pocketbooks were lighter,
our tote bags were heavier, a bit of lace probably was
made, and friendships were extended or begun. Thus,
another Lace Day blends into history, while we start
planning for Next Year.

We couldn't go to Ithaca, but we had our own Lace
Celebration. If you are in Oregon next year on
October 1, come join us for our 2007 Lace Day.

Happy lacing,
Alice in Oregon -- where it's raining a bit, but
supposed to be sunny the rest of the week.

[lace] Lace Day in Catalunya.

2007-05-04 Thread Jenny De Angelis
I thought I would just write a note to say how our lace day went here on
Sunday last, 29th April.

Sunday morning started off a little bit cloudy here in Lloret De Mar, and
the weather forecast had been for lots of rain but by about 11am the sun
came out and we had a beautiful hot and sunny day.

Everyone began arriving shortly before 10am and found their places, the road
running along the sea front was closed for the day and tables and chairs had
been set out in two long rows along the road. In the middle of the sea
front, adjoining the town hall and town square is a sandy area with palm
trees, this is called the Paseo which means walkway and where people take
the air and stroll about in the cool of the evening. On this paseo were all
of the suppliers stands, I suppose about 30 or so suppliers attended, these
included a couple of suppliers from France and Belgium too as well as a
table from OIDFA.

Between 10am -10.30 we had the Trabucaires which is a traditional thing, men
dressed in Catalan costume firing off their rifles, Trabucaires, not
ordinary straight barrelled rifles but ones distinct, I think, to this area
and I think may be traditional hunting guns or something, I am not sure.
What a noise they made. Then at 11am the Mayor officially opened the lace
day, he had been along to the Exhibition hall to view the lace exhibition
put on by the local lace makers as well as the extra exhibition presented by
the Assoc.of Lacemakers of Catalunya from a competition they ran, Paleta
Pastel, or pastel palette. Paleta Pastel consists of more modern pieces of
lace made in pastel shades and are very imaginative and beautiful, many of
these entries are framed as pictures to hang on the wall but a few others
are free standing arrangements.

Mid way tough the morning the Giants visited the event and the female giant
was carrying her lace pillow in her arms, every town has it's giants and
there are competitions between towns for the best ones. A little later we
had the local choir singing for half an hour or so, and the mayor and town
councillors walked along the rows chatting to the lace makers here and
there. Next came the Sardanas danced in the town square, this is the
regional dance of Catalunya and is danced to regional music played on
traditional instruments which look very strange to me as a foreigner, one of
these instruments looks a bit like the Elizabethan Serpent that was a
woodwind instrument but that's the best description I can give. The band
came from another town several kilometres away and had been invited to come
and play.

We were each given the usual bottle of water and then the ladies of the town
came along giving out straw hats to ward off the suns rays.

As part of the event, and to take care of the lacemakers husbands and other
family members, trips had been organised to the local botanical gardens on
the edge of the town, there was a regatta on the sea consisting of
traditional large rowing boats that were used for fishing in the past.
There were also trips up the hill at the back of the town to the ruins of an
Iberian village that has been excavated dating from C.600BC, I think that's
about the date but it's a while since was up there and the memory's not what
it was.

1.30pm -4pm was lunchtime and many lace makers went off to eat in pre-booked
restaurants etc., I had made a packed lunch for myself, Pam Mattioli and
Irene Knight, two other English lacemakers that came to take part along with
their husbands. We cleared a space on the table and ate our lunch then had
a walk around the suppliers stands buying a few necessary items, leaving the
men to guard our pillows.

Once everyone was back from lunch we made some more lace and then the
Majorettes arrived. A band came marching down one of the side streets to
the town square followed by the majorettes in their little short black
skirts and bright yellow jackets waving their pom poms and marching to the
band. Well!!what a laugh we all had at these majorettes, they were men
dressed up with curly blonde wigs, make up, white socks and plimsolls
prancing about and generally making everyone laugh a lot. Up went the back
of the skirts to reveal frilly knickers or tanga briefs, covering pairs of
shorts I might add, adjustments were made to busts and hair and coquettish
looks were given to some of the male spectators, it was very funny. There
must have been about 20 or so majorettes and they performed for a second
time a little later on. They were a group that come from another town
nearby.

It all added to the enjoyment of the day.

We saw some beautiful lace being made, including several pieces of needle
lace, but I didn't walk along to view it all as there was just too much to
see and such a crowd of people wandering along looking at it all.

About 5.30pm everyone began to pack up their pillows and waited for their
gifts to be distributed, every lace day ends wi

Hi Jenny,
What a wonderful description of your lace day. Makes ours seem very tame.
This time you didn't mention the number of lacemakers present, unless I missed
it. I read it out loud to my daughter as we worked on our own laptops side by
side on the sofa. She was surprised when I told her that there could have been
as many as 3,000 lacemakers at a lace day in Spain!

I doubt we would have got much lace made with all the distractions.

[lace] Lace day in Malaga

2008-06-10 Thread Laceandbits
I am just back from an amazing week in Malaga - three days teaching at a
seminary on a shady balcony overlooking gardens and mountains behind - followed
by
the lace day on Saturday.

Seven or eight hundred Spanish lacemakers all talking very loudly, with
Flamenco band and dancers on a stage in the centre, was a little different to
the
very subdued-by-comparison English and American ones I have been to.

A chance to see a differerent set of suppliers and goods, and watch the
Spanish ladies working on all their very different pillows.

My spangled English bobbins were the only ones there and my Milanese lace was
a source of wonder to them; as far as I could see there was nothing else
there being made with fine thread, although there was plenty of fine thread for
sale.

Having gone with no Spanish at all (so-called friends here assured me that
'everyone' in Spain speaks English but they lie) I now have a good but not
widely useful vocabulary for twist, cloth stitch, turning stitch, knot and
other
words of that type. Not a lot of help, for example, when the taxi back to the
airport was late arriving!

If any of you ever get the chance to go, grab it with both hands.

[lace] Lace day in Spain

2008-06-10 Thread ann.humphreys
We have just returned from holiday in Spain and as luck would have it there
was a lace day close to where we were staying. What a difference to the lace
days we have here. A marquee had been set up in the town square and lacemakers
were arriving by coaches. The noise was incredible. There must have been over
a hundred Spanish ladies all talking at the tops of their voices which I think
would probably get louder and louder as the day went on as the refreshment was
from several gallon jars of what looked like homemade wine but the atmosphere
was wonderful. I enjoyed looking at the variety of pillows, mainly bolster
types and many of them looked to be homemade, but I was surprised at the
thickness of the thread everyone seemed to be working with, in fact I didn't
see any lace being made with fine thread. Much of the lace seemed to be of the
very practical homemaking type with lots of wide edgings.
There were plenty of stalls doing masses of trade but hardly a coloured thread
to be seen. It has made me appreciate the great variety of threads I can buy
at lace days here. All the same I enjoyed my couple of hours there and
although I don't speak Spanish I did manage a bit of communication with some
of the lovely ladies there who were only too pleased to show off their work.

Maria is right. She is, in fact, one of the first persons who designed

Yes, I did know that. I met her at one of our lace days in 2014, and bought

Just have not had time to do anything with it, as I am still beavering away

I also have friends who live in the same area as she does. Antonio was my

at Hull uni and both also attended my German classes. There is a thought: I
could visit them at the same time. Something to aim and save for.

[lace] Lace Day in Barcelona - long

2004-05-24 Thread Pam Mattioli
Hi All

Just thought I'd let you all know about the fantastic Lace Day I attended
last week on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Carolina told us all about it back in Feb and as it coincided with our
wedding anniversary DH and I decided that a long weekend in Barcelona
sounded like a good idea. Selina (who started making lace in Sept) and her
DH decided to come too.

We arrived in Barcelona on Thursday and spent the following 2 days
sightseeing, by Sunday we were shattered by the amount of walking we had
done. We still didn't see half of what we wanted (opps, might have to go
again, VBG).

Sunday morning saw us up bright and early to get to the station to catch the
train. Carolina had given me directions and we'd arranged to meet at
10.15am. Getting to the station and finding the platform proved easy, now
for getting on the right train. Easy - find a lacemaker and follow her. We
had a choice of hundreds to follow! I've never seen so many lacemakers
crammed into such a small space before. All with pillows of varing shapes
and sizes, many of them being transported in shopping trollies or on luggage
wheels (now there's a good idea that needs following up).

The train arrived and on we all piled on, a few lucky ladies got seats, the
rest of us stood, fairly comfortably, hanging onto the handrails etc. Next
stop - another couple of hundred lacemakers get on! What a squeeze! If the
train had stopped suddenly no one would have fallen down as there wasn't any
room! One more stop and it looks like we're there -the train empties
completely apart from a few bemused holiday makers who had caught it at the
airport. We join the end of the queue to get out of the station, 20 mins
later we emerge onto the street and what a sight awaits us just acroos the
road.

Three long rows of trestle tables and chairs, divided into zones so that you
could find where you were sitting, going down the middle of the road. A long
row of gazeebo's on the right where the vendors were doing a roaring trade
and thousands and thousands of lacemakers. The day was bright and sunny, but
not too hot (the previous Sunday it poured with rain, so we were lucky). We
were a few minutes early, so we sat down and waited to see if we could spot
Carolina. She found us and it was great to meet her.

Carolina took us across to the vending area and explained how the lace day
worked, we chatted for a while in a mixture of English and Spanish (or was
it Catalan?). DH and I discoved that Catalan is similar to Italian so we had
no real problem understanding her. Then we went our seperate ways.

We solved the problem of where to start by working our way down the vendors,
just looking first time round and then back again sending far too much
money. Then on to the lacemakers. Pillows of all shapes and sizes, lace of
every description, though predominately white torchon. Groups of lacemkers
who had all dressed their pillows the same way, groups of lacemakers with
matching hats, groups of lacemakers with matching t-shirts. Groups of
lacemakers with banners on their tables - what a wonerful sight. Lots of
fantastic lace being worked and lots of lace being displayed. The camera was
well used and I'll be putting photos up on the PBLC site shortly. We stopped
and chatted (well sort of) to many of the lacemakers and my supply of
spangled bobbins was given away very swiftly. Most of the lacemakers were
not familiar with Midlands bobbins and found them fascinating.

5 hours passed quickly and we headed back to the train early so as to beat
the rush. A fantastic day, one which I hope to repeat another year. Now I'm
looking for lace days nearer home in the south of Spain - not sure when and
where they happen.

Sorry to have gone on so long

[lace] Lace Day - Vancouver, BC Area

2006-10-31 Thread Adele Shaak

Hello everyone:

Just wanted to announce that the Richmond Area Lacemakers (near
Vancouver, BC, Canada) will be having a Lace Day on Sunday, November
19th. Normally I wouldn't bother the list with this news, but we do
want to get the word out to people in Seattle, Victoria, and other
places close enough to make it a day trip, and we don't have enough
time to get the word out using our regular channels.

Anyone who wants to come can e-mail me if they like, and I will forward
the PDF file of our official announcement and a map to the venue.

[lace] Lace Day in Virginia Beach

2007-09-10 Thread Tamara P Duvall

Gentle Spiders,

My ISP had problems during the past weekend and some messages seem to
have gone into a black hole in cyberspace; could be that's why I
haven't seen anything here on the subject. But in case, nothing had
been written...

I'd like to thank Land House Lacers for organising a very enjoyable
Fall Lace Day this past Saturday. Everything -- from mini-workhops
through vendors and lecture and goodie bags to sweet-treats and raffle
-- was as smoothly woven together as a nice piece of lace.

I enjoyed every minute of it but the really high point of the day was
finding that Cherry Knobloch had made enough of her porcelain lace to
sell and brought it to the event. I'd fallen in love with it from the
day I saw her early experiments:

http://community.webshots.com/user/CherryJene
and, ever since, had a hard time restraining my impatience to *own* a
piece. Now I have three :)

Cherry, could you, *pretty please*, update your website and include the
newer pieces?

Many thanks, Land House Lacers, for a job well done!

Re: [lace] Lace day in Spain

2008-06-11 Thread Antje González
Hello Jacqui, Ann and all Arachneans.

Being a Spanish lacer I would like to make some comments about our lace
meetings here in Spain, as I feel that it is not much known abroad.

Lace has been made in Spain for centuries, but depending on the part of the
country you go to, you will see many different types. You have visited the
South, and there, same as in most Spain, they work with thick thread (number
50 or 40.. even thicker in some cases) especially when they are making
edgings for tablecloths or sheets... The lace most women make is for home
use, for practical use, so the thread cannot be fine, as the lace would get
spoiled in the first wash.

We also use the long vertical pillow, and big wooden bobbins, which have the
perfect weight to keep the thick thread.

But if you go further North, for example to Barcelona and that area, you
will see a lot of blonde and other laces made with hundreds of bobbins and
very fine thread. And also finer bobbins, but wooden too, and no spangles at
all.
When you talk about the lack of coloured threads to be sold: traditionally
we have always been working just with white and ecru, or black in some
cases. We are starting to introduce some colour because of the influences of
abroad. We see colour in magazines and books... but we are accepting colour
slowly. I suppose this is the reason that sellers don't sell much coloured
threads.. because we don't buy it normally.

The noise you noticed in the meeting is just a characteristic of how the
Spaniards are: we are much noisier than any other European people... Go to a
restaurant for example, and you will feel this too. Or in the streets, we
talk loud, and can hear perfectly the conversation of others who are near
us. In fact, when we go to other parts of Europe, we feel inhibited in a
restaurant or in the underground... because nobody speaks. Just different
cultures!

I also want to add that from May to December (aprox.) you will be able to
attend a lace meeting in Spain if you visit us, as there are many, in most
cities now.

Many greetings to all Arachneans...

Thanks, Tamara, for bringing this up!

I agree that the Lace Day at Virginia Beach was wonderful! Kudos to Linda

I'm also very impressed with Cherry's porcelain lace! I now own a little piece
of porcelain Flanders! AND... yesterday, I trotted out to my local "Michaels"
to find the frame she recommended. It was no longer on sale, but I got it
anyway... and it was still a bargain. And even better... Cherry has agreed
to bring her things to "Lace at Sweet Briar" next year!!

[lace] Lace Day at the Baltimore Museum of Art

2005-04-03 Thread Tamara P Duvall
Hello Gentle Spiders,
I just came back from my first ever Lace Day organised by the
Chesapeake Region Lace Guild, and, as Mary Tod and Laurie Hughes have
said, it had been a splendiferous occasion.

We started it with a breakfast - lots of sweet stuff, gotta get that
adrenaline flowing - followed by the business meeting, followed by 3
hours of demonstrations, inspecting the wonderful Cone Collection of
Lace and the "Inspired by Lace" textile installations of Piper Shepard
and inspecting the goodies both at the vendors' stalls and in the
Museums shop. These delights were followed by more: a lecture by Ilske
Thomsen ("At a Glance: Lace in Fashion"), followed by a - sweeet -
reception (gotta replenish all that adrenaline )

Laurie has already talked about the exhibit itself (though she didn't
mention spotting one hankie mounted with the raised work "face to the
wall ), and I second all she'd said. It was lovely, the lace was of
excellent quality and, although as usual I felt I could have spent
*more* time studying the pieces (at least the BL ones, which are have
more personal appeal), at least I didn't feel like I should have got a
permission to pitch my tent in the Museum for a couple of weeks. The
amount of lace displayed was was "almost doable" even in the short time
I had, and would have given a non-lacemaker a good overal introduction
to different techniques at their best.

I considered getting lunch on the premises (Devon had kindly offered to
tack me onto her reservation as had my hostess, Vicki)) but decided
that having a couple of cigarettes instead would be both cheaper and
faster; I was nervous about being on time for my demo hour, especially
since I had to assemble my table (I'm just too short to work at those
provided). And I was a little nervous about demonstrating at all; this
was only my second time, and the first time, I positioned myself
"strategically" - slightly behind Cay and Louise (Hume), so as not to
be too easily accessible for questions :)

This time, I also did my best, but my best wasn't good enough
Aurelia (Loveman) had her dream fulfilled - there were many and many of
us showing that lacemaking, in all its forms, was definitely *not* a
"dying art". But that also meant that, whichever door the museum-goers
used to move from one part of the Museum to another, they were likely
to see us; we were - literally - all around (a glassed-in atrium,
which, under different weather conditions would have given us
spectacular light, but, despite the rain gave perfectly good one) :)

I managed to arrive almost half an hour early and assembled my table
without any trouble (for once ). Unpacked all my paraphernalia,
unpinned my covercloth, untethered my bobbins and plunked my plaque
next to me. The plaque said: "We don't make mistakes; we do variations"
and the lace I was demonstrating is a simple, two-colour edging which
will go around it (one day in a distant future ) Perhaps the plaque
was a mistake - people noticed it, and laughed, and would start asking
questions the moment they read it.

I only managed to do one repeat in the 80 minutes (at home, it takes me
about 45; I timed it, and a good thing too, since people asked about
*that*). And, towards the end, I'd have sold my (non-existent ) soul
for a glass of water - it seemed to me that I talked, and talked, and
talked, almost non-stop, and I'm not used to that.

But the questions were intelligent and sensible, and it turned out I
was able to answer most of them although, in many cases, I'd refer them
to the exhibit (either: "go see it" or: "go back and look again",
depending on what their answer to my "have you seen it?" was) for more
illustrious illustrations of what I was doing and talking about. Only
once or twice did I stumble over vocabulary - I learnt lacemaking in
English, so Polish words don't come to mind first, unbidden, the way
they do in other circumstances. Only twice was I asked "where do you
come from?" and, as both times, the comment was: "I love your accent",
that was OK. Only once did I see a roll of the eyes and an overdone
shrug of indifference - from a 16-17yr old male, in response to his
mother's? excited: just look at that! She stopped and watched and asked
questions, he propped the wall "patiently" waitng for her to be done. I
suspect he must have had plans for that Saturday other than going to a
Museum :)

To compensate, I got one - maybe 20-22 - young lady who was so fired
up, she took the CRLG leaflet onto which I tacked on the Arachne
address (just in case you find a teacher but she can't answer your
questions fast enough, because you're only meeting once a week). *And*
I got *lots and lots* of positive comments on my "a la Rosalibre" pin -
both from lacemakers and the general public. General public was
immediately referred to the exhibit to look for other examples of
3-dimensions in lace, lacemakers to the vendors' room for the book :)

the Society for Creative Anachronism, and who may be attending Pennsic on
August 8th. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, just ignore this
email; I'm trying to get the word out as far as possible, as there's been a
change in coordinator, and I'm making up for lost time :)

We are scheduled to have a full, fun day of lace
making and display on Monday, August 8th in A&S tent #5 . To
that end, I would like to invite any and all lace makers to join in! The
tent
will be ours roughly 9-5, and you may come for as much or as little of that
time
as you would like. This would be a great time to get together with other
lace
makers, share ideas and questions, put faces to names, and otherwise just
have
an excuse to carve out some dedicated lace time in what is often an
overly-busy
Pennsic. If you just want to drop off some samples for display, but cannot
commit time, that's fine too; just make sure you come back for your stuff!

If possible, I would like to have some idea who might be coming and when, so
I
can gauge body count and lunch breaks if possible. Also, if you have an area
of
expertise or interest in teaching something specific, that would be good to
know
so that we can refer people who may have specific questions or interests to
the
best people to help. Please email me off-list at gypsy.vail (-at-) gmail.com
(obviously, please reconfigure the address appropriately). If you have
comments
or suggestions, just drop a line to that address as well.

Also, please pass this on to any and all lace related lists or friends that
you
know who may not be on this list. I look forward to meeting as many of you
as
can come. It was a blast last year, and I'm hoping it will be more of the
same
this year too.

As a note, if you have previously sent information this year to Arrienne of
Ashford (lat year's coordinator), *please resend* to me if at all possible.
I'm afraid I'm not in a position to get any pre-existing information from
her.
