RE: [leaf-user] Alcatel adsl speedtouch problems.

2003-09-15 Thread Kim Oppalfens

First of all thanks for taking time out of a probably busy schedule.

I am indeed using Bering uclibc and I am running from cdrom by now.
The speedtouch package is the one I downloaded from your website, so I
should bounce that question back to you, but I assume it is not compiled
against uclibc no.

I wouldn't mind switching back to bering, but I thought I used the quick
way out and try to get my current setup going.
Probably switching to bering will turn out to be quicker anyway.

I do assume usbdevfs is mounted ok since a cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
shows the speedtouch device.
I will start configuring a berind cd and try again, I will keep you
posted on my progress.
Kim Oppalfens

Kim:
Some suggestions
I understand you are using Bering uclibc. Is your speedtouch package
compiled
against the same lib ?
I you were willing (at least for testing purpose) to use standard Bering
you
would find in my testing directory to other versions of the speedtouch
driver: 1.1 (stable) and 1.2-beta2. You could give it a try and see if
that
solves your pb
Are you sure usbdevfs is mounted ok ?

2003-09-14 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi all,

I am trying to get a pppoe connection working over an alcatel speedtouch
usb adsl modem on a bering uclibc 1.1.
I have followed the directions in the bering users guide for the

Anyone already tried this?
If so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

RE: [leaf-user] IPtables ftp traffic problems on Bearing 1.2

2003-07-19 Thread Kim Oppalfens
You might want to try reading this info.
ftp://ftp.echogent.com/docs/FTP_and_Firewalls.pdf

The problem is that if you nat your internal ftp server which I gamble
you are doing the ports aren't opened up by the firewall because he
Has no idea he has to do so.

As far as the ip_nat_ftp ip_conntrack modules go I always assumed they
made it possible for you to connect out to a natted ftp-server
Not ftp to the inside. (I might be wrong on this though)

Helo,
I just find out shorewall - IPtables problem when hadling ftp
connection.

I am using masq to internet. When I create ftp conection from loc
firewall will froze - probably kernel panic - sorry I have not VGA card
in it.

For testing pusposes I set to ACCEPT all trafic from loc to net.

# iptables -V
iptables v1.2.8

# shorewall version
1.4.5

I am using ip_nat_ftp.o and ip_conntrack_ftp.o modules distributed with
Bearing 1.2

I also test to set NAT my PC in loc to a address on net interface and
I've tried to connect from internet to ftpd running on my PC. With same
results - firewall hang up. (For this test I set policies to ACCEPT all
trafic from net to loc)

Do anybody know where is the problem?

Thank you very much

Regards.

[leaf-user] How do I open individual ports?

2003-07-18 Thread Kim Oppalfens
Hi Mike,

Well it is indeed easy, but it is kinda difficult to spell out if you don't
tell
Us which version of leaf you are using.

I am going to assume it is Bering since that is what seems to be use most
often.
Go to the lrp configuration menu ( Type lrcfg).
Choose option 3 configure packages
Choose shorewall,
Choose Rules
How rules are created is described in this file as comments actually
opening up ports
Is done at the bottom of this file. There are already some default things
opened up so
By just looking at the examples you should be able to figure it out.
If not just yell :-).

Don't forget to backup the shorewall package afterwards (otherwise
everything will be gone after your first reboot).
Do a
shorewall restart and everything should be fine.

RE: [leaf-user] How to set up bridging with Bering?

2002-10-30 Thread Kim Oppalfens
There is absolutely no need to filling up someone's logs.
Cipe is an encrypted tunnel and the cipe protocol has
Bridging support. In other words it is perfectly possible
To have two private lan's bridged together across the
Internet over a cipe interface.

For more info on cipe check freshmeat.net and search for cipe.

Kim

 Gads I hope not.. :-)
You might take a gander at WINS or some other resolution method
outside of NetBeui/NetBIOS. You do _not_ want to be spewing
broadcast garbage outside of your subnet when better, more
controlled methods are available. Setting up a WINS server on each
subnet that sync with each other is much more preferrable.

Getting Warcraft III going was actually the more pressing requirement,

broadcast browse lists would just be a nice bonus otherwise you have
to keep using \\ip address\sharename strings to find file shares.
They are only small networks 5 machines each, so being overwhelmed
with broadcast packets is not going to be a problem. For tiny
networks i often find it is more work to do things the 'proper' way
(eg dhcp server) than the 'hard' way (manual ip settings and a text
file of who has what ip)

A M$ WINS server will likely be a pain to get to sync across subnets,
however Samba servers do it effortlessly. It might be harder to setup a
WINS server, but at last look the line added to smb.conf only required
wins server=yes to set it up as a wins server. You also need to add a
line for sync'ing the remote servers (by ip address). If this is not
something your going to want to try, your probably not going to have any
success without a lot more work across subnets.

My suggestion was from the stand-point that I don't want Win2K/XP to be
broadcasting all my LAN information out to the internet. there is
enough trash in my logs without adding more to someone else's logs.

I don't think an attack of some form is going on here. (Because there is no

from the fact that it is a broadcast.

If it is bothering you that it is being logged is bothering you you can
allways add a line to the rfc1918

[leaf-user] Leaf presentation

2002-07-16 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi All,

I started making a leaf powerpoint presentation to use during
an aka-session (free evening sessions here at work).
I am working for a training center in Belgium;
every 2 or 3 weeks we have some free evening sessions about a theme
that is not covered in any courses. So I decided to do one over leaf.

And I could use some input on the following subjects.

Leaf vs Internet Connection sharing.
Leaf vs wingate; sygate; winroute whatever.
Leaf vs win2k server doing nat.
Leaf vs cisco/pix???/watchguard???.
Leaf vs Broadband dedicated routers.

Especially the last one is rather difficult to tackle.

Once its finished I will probably publish it somewhere for proofreading.

If you just need a little room why not a second floppy? I think the user
or installation guide tells howm it should also be in the mail list
archive (I did not search, but remember reading it multipke times).

You can put programs on a cdrom even if you can not boot from the cdrom.
Again check the guides.

Hi all,

Especially the bering crew, is there any reason why /etc is

Reason I ask is because I had to change it to make cipe work.

Since we are talking pretty easy small environment stuff
I think htb with fw would be the easiest to implement
that is what I use and what the developper of your

Check www.shorewall.net on traffic shaping docs.

[leaf-user] wireless dlink pci dwl520 problem

2002-06-13 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi all

I bought 3 dlink wireless adapters to make my internal network wireless.
But with only partial success. I am using bering by the way.

My progress so far.

I loaded the hostap_pci.o module from jacques.
and modified shorewall to use wlan0 as internal device over eth1.

The wlan adapter is coming up and is getting a static ip.
I also loaded the wireless tools, which complain that they are version 13
the driver was compiled for 12 but things seem to work.

I tried to switch the network to ad hoc mode but there things start to go
wrong.

Anyone using these dlink cards with bering have any pointers?
Are just some pointers for wireless in general might help.

Thanks a million in advance
Kim

[leaf-user] Bering RC2 mport iptables patch.

2002-06-12 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi,

Is there a module for the mport patch available for bering rc2??
If I am not mistaken that is version 1.2.6a of iptables.

A second question is probably for Tom himself but maybe others are
interested as well.

In the tcrules documentation you specify that you have compiled a new tc
binary file
To be able to work with htb.

Is there a place where we can download this binary or should we recompile
ourselfs?

I am trying to play around with qos but I am running into troubles
with Marking packets from a specific size.

 The command I use

 Iptables -I INPUT -m length --length 1400:1500 -j MARK --set-mark 10

But it gives me an error on the length stating no rule target match
with that name. The iptables kernel module is located in
 /lib/iptables.

A quick glance at man iptables indicates you can only play with mark values
in the mangle table:

TARGET EXTENSIONS
iptables can use extended target modules: the following
are included in the standard distribution.
   snip
   MARK
This is used to set the netfilter mark value associated
with the packet. It is only valid in the mangle table.

   --set-mark mark

The problem isn't related to the mangle or mark thingies.

It is the length match that is creating the problem.
the complete iptables filter is a bit longer.
And if I eliminate the length match just do the same thing
without the length (a simple source ip destination port) filter
everything works out fine.

OK, how about going back to the basics...do you have the proper modules

ipt_MARK.o and/or ipt_mark.o, and maybe iptable_mangle.o.

  root:f,etc:f,modules:f,local:f,subdir/tools/dns-utils:f

  Work??
Yes and no . ( more no ;) )
THe pkg would be loaded , as this is done by gzip and tar, this
programms get the complete path and file name
As long as you don't want to do any configuration or backup, it
should be ok but not advisable.

The problem however is that you won't find a configuration menu
nor the possibility to save your files. !

The path and file name are stored together as the package name.
To show the configuration menu :
The directory /var/lib/lrpkg is searced for files with the name
package name.conf this is not found as your conf file is named
dns-utils.conf and not subdir/tools/dns-utils.conf

At the backup:
the backup programm tries to find the file subdir/tools/dns-
utils.list (which doesn't exist.) and the next problem shows up as
soon as the programm tries to create /tmp/subdir/tools/dns-utils.lrp
which also fails.

If there are more people interested in getting this fixed, it could be
done.but would require some rewriting in the backup programm,
and in the initrd (linuxrc) possibly breaking compatibility with other
leaf versions.

[leaf-user] Bering using lrpkg.cfg

2002-05-11 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi list,

I am trying to create a bering disk that uses the lrpkg.cfg file to specify
the packages
without much luck.

What I am trying to do for now is creating an lrpkg.cfg file on a working
hdd module
(diskonchip thats completely ide compatible).

As soon as I remove the LRP variable from syslinux.cfg
My system refuses to boot telling me I attempted to kill init.

It pretty much looks like it that he is not reading lrpkg.cfg at all.
I have read the bering user guide and did everything in section 8 without
success

Any clues anyone???

[leaf-user] Module finder??

2002-05-05 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi all,

Just wondering if a module finder service exists?

Supposedly I have some sort of nic, which doesn't come with a linux module
and the website of the manufacturer
doesn't mention anything about linux neither.

How would I go about finding the correct module? Does a list or search
engine for such a thing exists?
Or would I do what I usually do in Linux trouble and ask this or some other
list?

PS: It is just a hypothetical question, I am thinking about doing a
presentation about leaf installation at work, and would like
to find a nice solution for this problem. (Since I think it is the most
difficult part in the installation if you don't have one of the standard
modules included in most branches.)

When loading the ide-probe-mod module I get a message stating that ide0

quite some idestuff in the kernel)

Btw the new kernel was necessary to boot from flashmodule from apacer which

At the end of /boot/etc/modules isofs.o is trying to load. I said trying,

Hi, I found out about LEAF from the Langa List and was attracted to it
because it could do broadband routing on a computer, just by booting from a
CD or floppy. Unfortunately, our family is glued to Windows, and we don't
have time to learn to build/compile Linux, etc, but the LEAF instructions
seemed easy (just burn an ISO image and do some configuring).

My problem is, before we get broadband, we already have a home network
(Windows boxes and now a Mac). We want a DHCP server to assign IP addresses,
and I want to use a Linux distribution on a spare box to do so.
Unfortunately, LEAF requires two NIC's because it is a full LAN/WAN router.
I was wondering if there is a good distribution just as easy and small as
LEAF that can just do DHCP serving over Ethernet?

Thanks in advance.

[Leaf-user] compile 2.4 kernel

Hi all,

I am trying to compile my own 2.4.18 kernel, I cleanly applied the patches I
found on Jacques Nilo's page against a stock 2.4.18 kernel from
ftp.kernel.org.

The kernel compiles fine, but the minute I am trying to make modules I
constantly get segmentation fault errors.

Btw I am compiling the kernel on a Redhat 7.2 system.

I installed the glibc compatibilities libraries for glibc 20 21.
If I compile everything against glibc 21 everything seems to work fine.

If I compile everything against glibc20 I get a warning that my glibc
version is to old and does not produce correct kernels.

If I compile against glibc22 I get segmentation faults in make modules.

What am I doing wrong?

2002-03-24 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi all,

1) I am testing a bering beta4 firewall. Everything works fine except
for weblet. Which I can't seem to access. I did change the internal ip
address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.0.1 I adapted the hosts.allow
accordingly and
Configured inetd.conf and sh-httpd.conf to run weblet on port 8008.
I used shorewall to open up weblet from inside to the firewall the same
thing from outside the firewall (I know this is not a good idea, is just for
testing). I did this in the params file.

When I try to access weblet from an inside machinge I get gateway timeout
error.

From the outside I get page cannot be displayed.

Anybody any idea what I am doing wrong?

2) What would be the cleanest way to add iptable commands to the bering boot
process?

[Leaf-user] Replacing Kernel

2002-03-14 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi all,

Just wondering how difficult it would be to replace the kernel on a
eigerstein beta 2 floppy.

Replace by kernel 2.2.19
Replace by kernel 2.4.x

Would just compiling it on another machine and replace the linux file on the
floppy and of course replace the necessary modules work?

Of course the respectively patches need to be applied.

Or should I take some other things into consideration.

[Leaf-user] (no subject)

2002-03-11 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi all,

Just installed the snort IDS package and it seems to be working.
(Seems to be because I don't know anything about writing the preprocessors
or filter rules yet).

What I would like to do next is log to a mysql Database.
And I was wondering if anyone already made a mysql.lrp.

I know this is going to take quite some diskspace, but I am hoping
That my 64 MB ramdisk will cope.

Thanks in advance

[Leaf-user] Dachstein glibc

2002-01-20 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi Charles,

If I check my /lib folder in the dachstein floppy release I get the
impression that
you are using glibc 2.1.3 (because of the filenames).

But I can't seem to find any confirmations on that major change in the docs.
Am I missing something? Is dachstein floppy using 2.1.3 or are the names
changed for some other reason?

Kim

Ecuse me, but when I list /lib I see for example:

libc-2.0.7.so

and not a single filename containing 2.1.3 .

Erm, I just double checked, and apparently you are right, I would have
sworn that when I checked (and double-checked)
yesterday all filenames ended in 2.1.3 (And I only have a dachstein
eigerstein floppy available.)
Probably wishfull thinking on my part.

Sorry to have bothered the list with a stupid question.

There are only stupid questions, no stupid answers. (Or was that the other
way around?)

Would any of the people who already tried (and preferably succeeded)
upgraded to glibc 2.1.3 give a little bit more explanation at how it is done?
I am running a dual floppy eigerstein for the moment and would like a shot.

I'm not sure if this is still a requirement with Dachstein but with ES2B the

libraries apperently had to be stored in root.lrp (it would crash otherwise, I
guess it needs it before loading the rest...).

I too had a dual floppy installation (still have, just in case...) and I'm not
sure if it would have fit but I must confess that in my case my floppy were
formatted as 1.44 Mb and not as 1.68 Mb (I personnally don't trust 1.68...).

Is it just a matter of replacing some binaries and maybe some symbolic links?
If so which binaries and which links would that be?

According to the following URL
http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/FAQ.html#s-2.27
most of what has been compiled for glibc 2.0 should work with glibc 2.1 so
I hadn't recompiled any of the programs...

Indeed most of the programs provided they are compiled for glibc 2.0 which
means that in order to get some apps working you (or someone else) need to
recompile them.

WARNING THIS IS PROBABLY THE COW BOY WAY OF DOING THINGS AND IF YOU TRY
IT YOU'RE
DOING IT AT YOUR OWN RISKS AND I WOULD SUGGEST YOU DO A BACKUP OF YOUR DISKS.

Noted :-)

That said, mostly what I had done was take the libc.lrp package from an
Oxygen image, added
it to SYSLINUX.CFG and rebooted. Most of the links where taken card of by
that operation...

I don't remember if I had that problem but it would seem that with
Dachstein the
following links would still point to glibc 2.0 librairies after that
operation...

libnss_dns.so.1
libnss_files.so.1
libnsl.so.1

which on a full (Redhat-based) distribution point respectivly to:

libnss1_dns-2.1.3.so
libnss1_files-2.1.3.so
libnsl-2.1.3.so

which I would be tempted to copy from that full distribution... Anybody
know what they're
used for and whether it would be a good idea to copy them over from a
full distribution?

BTW, don't forget to delete the old glibc libraries before backing up...

Or is there more to it than that? Does the kernel version or something in
kernel configuration has something to do with it?

If there is would somebody please tell us...

Yes please do

I already noticed there is a dachstein cd iso with glibc 2.1.3 support,
if it is just a matter of replacing binaries could I just copy those from
this iso image?

I think you're talking of David Douthitt's Oxygen here... AFAIK, DCD
(Dachstein CD)
as distributed by Charles Steinkuehler uses glibc 2.0... Does somebody
distributes
an ISO image based on Dachstein which uses glibc 2.1.3?

Yups on http://leaf.sourceforge.net somebody is distributing an image as
proof-of-concept

BTW, everything seemed to work ok after I had replaced the librairies but
ONCE AGAIN, IF YOU TRY THIS YOU'RE DOING IT AT YOUR OWN RISKS...
While I have many years of experience in the computer field I'm still
quite a newbie when it comes to Linux and the modifications I had made
where at my
own risk done in in a trial-error way... (sp?)

Standard disclaimer detected ;-)

BTW, if anybody know of anything I've done wrong or that I forgot to do,
please do not
hesitate to post...

Have a nice day!

Nick

[Leaf-user] Is anybody using radmin behind lrp?

2001-10-10 Thread Kim Oppalfens

Hi there,

Just a quick question, is anybody using radmin (a remote control tool
see : http://radmin.com) behind his lrp firewall?
I am trying to connect over the internet to my home machine behind
lrp.

So far I have opened up and portforwarded port 4899 to the windows
box, but I still can't connect.

Anybody had more luck? Well probably not luck just brains :-).
If so I would appreciate some guidelines to getting it to work.
