RE: [leaf-user] Alcatel adsl speedtouch problems.
First of all thanks for taking time out of a probably busy schedule. I am indeed using Bering uclibc and I am running from cdrom by now. The speedtouch package is the one I downloaded from your website, so I should bounce that question back to you, but I assume it is not compiled against uclibc no. I wouldn't mind switching back to bering, but I thought I used the quick way out and try to get my current setup going. Probably switching to bering will turn out to be quicker anyway. I do assume usbdevfs is mounted ok since a cat /proc/bus/usb/devices shows the speedtouch device. I will start configuring a berind cd and try again, I will keep you posted on my progress. Kim Oppalfens Kim: Some suggestions I understand you are using Bering uclibc. Is your speedtouch package compiled against the same lib ? I you were willing (at least for testing purpose) to use standard Bering you would find in my testing directory to other versions of the speedtouch driver: 1.1 (stable) and 1.2-beta2. You might want to try reading this info. ftp://ftp.echogent.com/docs/FTP_and_Firewalls.pdf The problem is that if you nat your internal ftp server which I gamble you are doing the ports aren't opened up by the firewall because he Has no idea he has to do so. [leaf-user] How do I open individual ports?
Hi Mike, Well it is indeed easy, but it is kinda difficult to spell out if you don't tell Us which version of leaf you are using. I am going to assume it is Bering since that is what seems to be use most often. Go to the lrp configuration menu ( Type lrcfg). Choose option 3 configure packages Choose shorewall, Choose Rules How rules are created is described in this file as comments actually opening up ports Is done at the bottom of this file. There are already some default things opened up so By just looking at the examples you should be able to figure it out. If not just yell :-). Don't forget to backup the shorewall package afterwards (otherwise everything will be gone after your first reboot). Do a shorewall restart and everything should be fine. RE: [leaf-user] How to set up bridging with Bering?
There is absolutely no need to filling up someone's logs. Cipe is an encrypted tunnel and the cipe protocol has Bridging support. In other words it is perfectly possible To have two private lan's bridged together across the Internet over a cipe interface. For more info on cipe check freshmeat.net and search for cipe. Kim Gads I hope not.. :-) You might take a gander at WINS or some other resolution method outside of NetBeui/NetBIOS. You do _not_ want to be spewing broadcast garbage outside of your subnet when better, more controlled methods are available. Setting up a WINS server on each subnet that sync with each other is much more preferrable. Getting Warcraft III going was actually the more pressing requirement, broadcast browse lists would just be a nice bonus otherwise you have to keep using \\ip address\sharename strings to find file shares. They are only small networks 5 machines each, so being overwhelmed with broadcast packets is not going to be a problem. For tiny networks i often find it is more work to do things the 'proper' way (eg dhcp server) than the 'hard' way (manual ip settings and a text file of who has what ip) A M$ WINS server will likely be a pain to get to sync across subnets, however Samba servers do it effortlessly. It might be harder to setup a WINS server, but at last look the line added to smb.conf only required wins server=yes to set it up as a wins server. You also need to add a line for sync'ing the remote servers (by ip address). If this is not something your going to want to try, your probably not going to have any success without a lot more work across subnets. My suggestion was from the stand-point that I don't want Win2K/XP to be broadcasting all my LAN information out to the internet. there is enough trash in my logs without adding more to someone else's logs. -- --- This sf.net email is sponsored by:ThinkGeek Welcome to geek heaven. http://thinkgeek.com/sf leaf-user mailing list: [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/leaf-user SR FAQ: http://leaf-project.org/pub/doc/docmanager/docid_1891.html

I have try googling and i found a mailing list that analyze i have to recompile my kernel to support RTNETLINK, if it's the answer, so the next question is how to recompile kernel on Bering to support RTNETLINK. Kim Hello Kim Others Well I kinda found the problem fixed although not in the clean and nice way as I want to fix it. It will require some more tweaking though. In the end my problem had nothing to do with the modules (although isofs.o is still failing during boot). My problem was that I tried to boot from /dev/cdrom which doesn't exist. I tried to create it afterwards backup root initrd but that didn't help. I noticed just now that the /dev contents is recreated each time from a file called /var/lib/lrpkg/root.dev.mk unfortunately that file is being backed up executed from the root.lrp package I have no actuall image booted at hand but root.dev.mk is backed up with initrd on bering. look in /var/lib/lrpkg/initrd.list here var/lib/lrpkg/root.dev.mk should be listed. and is there for backed up with initrd = at the boot device. Eric Wolzak which is the first package on /dev/cdrom. Kinda a chicken egg problem. Kim Hi, I found out about LEAF from the Langa List and was attracted to it because it could do broadband routing on a computer, just by booting from a CD or floppy. Unfortunately, our family is glued to Windows, and we don't have time to learn to build/compile Linux, etc, but the LEAF instructions seemed easy (just burn an ISO image and do some configuring). My problem is, before we get broadband, we already have a home network (Windows boxes and now a Mac). We want a DHCP server to assign IP addresses, and I want to use a Linux distribution on a spare box to do so. Unfortunately, LEAF requires two NIC's because it is a full LAN/WAN router. I was wondering if there is a good distribution just as easy and small as LEAF that can just do DHCP serving over Ethernet? Thanks in advance. [Leaf-user] compile 2.4 kernel
Hi all, I am trying to compile my own 2.4.18 kernel, I cleanly applied the patches I found on Jacques Nilo's page against a stock 2.4.18 kernel from ftp.kernel.org. The kernel compiles fine, but the minute I am trying to make modules I constantly get segmentation fault errors. Btw I am compiling the kernel on a Redhat 7.2 system. I installed the glibc compatibilities libraries for glibc 20 21. If I compile everything against glibc 21 everything seems to work fine. I am running a dual floppy eigerstein for the moment and would like a shot. I'm not sure if this is still a requirement with Dachstein but with ES2B the libraries apperently had to be stored in root.lrp (it would crash otherwise, I guess it needs it before loading the rest...). I too had a dual floppy installation (still have, just in case...) and I'm not sure if it would have fit but I must confess that in my case my floppy were formatted as 1.44 Mb and not as 1.68 Mb (I personnally don't trust 1.68...). Is it just a matter of replacing some binaries and maybe some symbolic links? If so which binaries and which links would that be? According to the following URL http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/FAQ.html#s-2.27 most of what has been compiled for glibc 2.0 should work with glibc 2.1 so I hadn't recompiled any of the programs... Indeed most of the programs provided they are compiled for glibc 2.0 which means that in order to get some apps working you (or someone else) need to recompile them. WARNING THIS IS PROBABLY THE COW BOY WAY OF DOING THINGS AND IF YOU TRY IT YOU'RE DOING IT AT YOUR OWN RISKS AND I WOULD SUGGEST YOU DO A BACKUP OF YOUR DISKS. Noted :-) That said, mostly what I had done was take the libc.lrp package from an Oxygen image, added it to SYSLINUX.CFG and rebooted. Most of the links where taken card of by that operation... I don't remember if I had that problem but it would seem that with Dachstein the following links would still point to glibc 2.0 librairies after that operation... libnss_dns.so.1 libnss_files.so.1 libnsl.so.1 which on a full (Redhat-based) distribution point respectivly to: libnss1_dns-2.1.3.so libnss1_files-2.1.3.so libnsl-2.1.3.so which I would be tempted to copy from that full distribution... Anybody know what they're used for and whether it would be a good idea to copy them over from a full distribution? BTW, don't forget to delete the old glibc libraries before backing up... Or is there more to it than that? Does the kernel version or something in kernel configuration has something to do with it? If there is would somebody please tell us... Yes please do I already noticed there is a dachstein cd iso with glibc 2.1.3 support, if it is just a matter of replacing binaries could I just copy those from this iso image? I think you're talking of David Douthitt's Oxygen here... AFAIK, DCD (Dachstein CD) as distributed by Charles Steinkuehler uses glibc 2.0... Does somebody distributes an ISO image based on Dachstein which uses glibc 2.1.3? Yups on http://leaf.sourceforge.net somebody is distributing an image as proof-of-concept BTW, everything seemed to work ok after I had replaced the librairies but ONCE AGAIN, IF YOU TRY THIS YOU'RE DOING IT AT YOUR OWN RISKS... While I have many years of experience in the computer field I'm still quite a newbie when it comes to Linux and the modifications I had made where at my own risk done in in a trial-error way... (sp?)
