[LU] Disgrace.
United can confirm the club has received an acceptable offer forJonny Howsonfrom Norwich City. The club has reluctantly accepted the offer on the basis that the player only has six months of his current contract remaining and has expressed a desire that he would like to play Premier League football at the earliest opportunity. The club has been in discussions with the player about a new contract at Elland Road for more than 12 months, but he has been steadfast in his position that he would like the opportunity to play Premier League football and on that basis Jonny hasn't felt in a position to commit himself to Leeds United at this moment in time. The player would be able to leave on a free transfer at the end of his current contract. While accepting the offer on Tuesday the player has still to agree terms with Norwich and we are disappointed the matter has become public at this stage. Sent from my iPhone. Dr Michael Benjamin. [LU] Lambert or Grayson
Because of the difference we are selling them our stars and giving a trial to their rejects. MS is one thing but the par between the two managers is highly significant and critical. The fact that Grayson has not only not got a team but not a team spirit or seemingly personal loyalty. No player with any ambition would play for him and forgo his justifiable ambition. Fed up to the back teeth. What a fucking mess and it's not over by a long way. Grayson must go now. A new manager with seven million to spend or demonstrations against the present management. I also agree that he is hardly a world beater - but in this squad at least he has had to do the donkey work, and we probably haven't seen the best of him. EXTREMELY disappointing but I'm not in the slightest surprised - if he hadn't signed a new contract with just 5 months left he was never going to and was always off. Re: [LU] Disgrace.
Lets get real people. Howson has been on the fringes of the England squad and wants to play in the premier league. It is not (just) about the money, Howson knows he could play there next season. The only choice Leeds have here is whether to not accept an offer, hope we get promoted, and then offer him a new contract. If we got promoted we would need a major overhaul and to be honest Howson would be lucky to be a first choice player for us anyway. In the old days players used to sign new contracts as a matter of course, it meant that they would be earning more money immediately, and would not affect a transfer in the summer one way or the other - no club keeps a player that doesn't want to play for them. These days most transfers are free transfers, and if a player wants to move then it helps a lot if their new club don't need to agree a fee. Basically if they are not under contract they can decide where to go. Players don't mind sacrificing 6 months extra wages, because come the summer they will get a much bigger signing on fee and/or wages if they are a free transfer. Howson wants to go, fuck him off now. -Original Message- From: leedslist-boun...@gn.apc.org [mailto:leedslist-boun...@gn.apc.org] On Behalf Of Lee Jones Sent: 18 January 2012 10:11 To: Alec McQueen Cc: LEEDSLIST Subject: Re: [LU] Disgrace. Re: [LU] Disgrace.
For me this is the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm not renewing my season tickets now - I'll get a membership card (through gritted teeth) and cherry pick a few away games. As far as I'm concerned the dismantling of the squad is entirely Bates's fault. How is Grayson supposed to build a team if we constantly sell our best players and offer existing first team players derisory contracts? He should at least have the honesty to admit that we're not contenders for promotion (and on the basis of the performances I've seen this year we definitely aren't) - we're a mid-ranking average team championship cutting costs. Whilst you have a point about not knowing the full story, the FACT remains that Kilkenny and Johnson were not offered what they thought they were worth last season, and White and Clayton have both refused to sign the contracts put to them so far. Howson also rejected a new contract - this would indicate that we are unwilling or unable to pay the 'going rate'Players are always going to go to 'better' teams and want to play at a higher level but for some reason we are not able to convince them of our ambition to make it to that higher level In our minus 15 season we were just behind Swansea, now in the Prem, in our promotion season we were just behind Norwich, now in the Prem, Last season we were a Division higher than Southampton who look to be heading to the Prem, We look to be headed nowhere - despite being a 'bigger club' with bigger gates and more revenue than any of those 3 teams (let alone Stoke, Blackburn, Wigan, Bolton etc who are all now established Prem sides) There is an air of dislillusionment around ER - of the 7 of us who have a ST, 2 of us are 20 year ST holders. of the other 5 , 2 are renewing, 2 are not renewing and one is undecided These have all had ST since the Prem days and so are as loyal as most fans. Re: [LU] Disgrace.
Of course I don't know the numbersBut - we have had large crowds by football league standards, we have really expensive season tickets and match day tickets, and the money doesn't seem to be invested in the team. To support my belief that we offer 'derisory' contracts I'd point to Bristol City appearing to offer Kilkenny more than we did, and the growing number of other players don't seem willing to extend their contracts. And, quite frankly going to Elland has been a chore more often than being a pleasure this season. I've had home and away season tickets for years - and I'm just fed up with how the club appears to be run. I'm certainly not going to pay for the refurbishment of the ground while the team is asset stripped and not invested in. Re: [LU] Disgrace.
No, sorry, but the only FACT with Johnson Kilkenny, is that due to them being free agents at the end of the season, they were able to get much better deals elsewhere due to lack of transfer fee. Well, there's that. But let's take an educated guess at the financial situation/s. Firstly, what would a reasonable chairman base their budgets on? I would say matchday revenue and guaranteed TV money. Plus merchandise, I suppose. But prize money, cup runs - you wouldn't base your budget on those, because if they didn't happen you'd be screwed. Imagine budgeting for Champions League football and then not getting it... So, Everton - to whom we lost Jermaine Beckford on a free transfer - will pick up £30m in TV rights plus a minimum £20m per season in ticket sales (based on their average attendance of 33,407 so far this season, at the lowest possible adult ticket price of £31) Norwich City - to whom we lost Bradley Johnson and to whom we look like losing Jonny Howson - will similarly receive £30m in TV rights, and at least £15m in ticket sales (average attendance 26,516, cheapest ticket £30). Bristol City - who took Neil Kilkenny from us - will get £2.6m in TV money, and can expect no less than £6m in tickets sales over the season (13,232 x £25). Leeds United, like Bristol, will get £2.6m from the Football League for the collective TV deal. But with an average attendance of 23,733, at a cheapest possible ticket price of £20, would be budgeting on taking over £9m in ticket sales. So the financial reality is, we can't expect to compete with Premier League teams when we allow our players' contracts to run down. On the other hand, we are a club that has been in trouble before with players earning a lot of money when revenue goes down; signing up any of the above of Premier League-level contracts would be brilliant if we knew we were going up, but if we failed to do so and were lumbered with the costs anyway, well, we'd be returning those goldfish to the rental store. What I don't accept is that we couldn't offer Kilkenny at least as good a deal as Bristol were willing to offer him. Surely Beckford was our top earner - and he'd left the previous season. Yes, there's the signing on fee that would be a nice little payday for him and his agent, but if we can't match that then surely we're only going to have to pay it for a replacement (if not an actual fee), but with added disruption to the squad? I mean, I don't know. We'd all hate for Leeds to start overspending again. But it irks me that Norwich are now a bigger club than Leeds. And surely there's enough money in the club to say to Howson, You're the club captain, a fan of the club, we'll match whatever offer anyone makes? And why wasn't this done when he was made captain last season? Still, at least we've got Becchio tied to the club for the next couple of years... Re: [LU] Disgrace.
Dave I agree with all you say. I just wonder whether grayson is the issue? Maybe a better manager/coach will be able to get more out of the squad we have and also engender a more positive feeling among the players. I know its easy for me sitting here in sunny Azania (38 degrees C, no wind, going to jump in the pool after this), but would it not be better to try and organize a boycott of one or two games? Could it be done? That would soon show bates that the fans mean business, as it would hit him in the pocket. It would mean a complete empty stadium, which would take a lot of cajoling, but would imho, be worth it if it gets Bates out. I am not convinced that he is the sole problem, but I do think that while he is there, we will struggle to progress. To pre-empt the posts saying we should support the team, and that a boycott will affect them - fuck them. Most of them would leave for more money, higher league, etc in a flash. Maybe it time for a revolution. I feel for you guys that pay to go watch the team every week. I don't know what I would do if I was in your shoes. 'I am so F...ing upset. I'm of the Mad Dr Mike vintage, as I've said before my first game was the return of John Charles, and I've been LEEDS UNITED A.F.C. and proud ever since. I can't think of anything, anything in the past 50 years that has made me question my allegiance like this. Howson isn't/ wasn't our best or most skilful player but he was us. from over here it felt like JH was playing for me, he cared about our team, our boys, he was us. I don't give a flying fuck about the wages, but this isn't about the money. This is about pride, ambition, loyalty. this is about LEEDS UNITED and it is about the way the ms is destroying us with the death of 1 cuts and i bet the bastard is creaming his pants over it. He was in my original list, along with McQueen, Jordan, Woodgate, Smith, Robinson etc., but I thought I would stick with midfielders for effect J All of whom were much better players and much more important than Howson. Not that I don't think it is a shame he is going, I just think this was inevitable, and the club weren't going to get burned as they were with Beckford, Johnson and Kilkenny. I don't think I could be any more devastated when we sold Batty to Cashburn. I wrote to the club to complain (and got a letter back!) Ever since then, I have accepted that's the way it goes, and I don't understand why everyone is so upset about Howson, compared with the other players I have mentioned. Re: [LU] Good old days
Dear Supporter, who gives a flying fuck what you think? The good old days, eh? Jason Nisse Thompson's contacts include Chris Akers and Andrew Regan. He also owns Windsor racecourse and is backing Elizabeth Emanuel In June, Richard Thompson was honoured for his contribution to business. Along with luminaries such as John Ritblat, founder of British Land, Mike Gooley of Trailfinders and Simon Woodruffe, the brains behind YO! Sushi, Thompson won an award from accountants Ernst Young and The Times newspaper as one of London's Entrepreneurs of the Year. It was an irony that the 35-year-old businessman - whose interests stretch from meat packing to designer frocks via television and football - should get the award this year. After all, in the last 12 months, his business interests have lost at least pounds 30m. In addition, one former associate has been convicted of fraud and another has had a warrant issued for his arrest. Later this month former associate Allan Leonard is due to appear at the Old Bailey in London for sentencing after admitting to 15 charges of fraud, forgery and false accounting. The 49-year-old grain trader and former racehorse owner was a close family friend of Thompson, having worked for his father, David, since 1987. Muirpace, the company that Leonard ran, was a subsidiary of Thompson family businesses. Its losses from Leonard's gambles on the derivatives market are estimated at pounds 28.5m. Speaking publicly for the first time since Leonard's conviction, Richard Thompson told The Independent on Sunday that the Muirpace scandal was disappointing, but not a tragedy. It does not make a big difference to the overall picture, he said. We've drawn a line under the losses. If you look over the years we've made more money out of Allan Leonard than we lost. While Allan Leonard's problems have had a direct bearing on the Thompson family businesses, Richard Thompson says he is no longer associated with another colourful business character - Andrew Regan. Regan, who shot to fame in his attempt at taking over the Co-op Wholesale Society a couple of years ago, is presently in Monaco. If he returns to the UK, the Serious Fraud Office has said it would arrest him on charges of stealing pounds 2.4m from a public company, the food manufacturer Hobson, that he used to run. And who introduced Regan to Hobson? None other than Richard Thompson. I was involved with Hobson for seven years, from 1986 to 1993, says Thompson (Regan arrived in 1991). I stayed for two years after he took control and then left. There is no suggestion that Thompson knew anything of the alleged bribing of Co-op officials which form the core of the Serious Fraud Office case against Regan and three others involved in the Hobson scandal. Thompson happily admits he had been associated with quite a few colourful characters in a business career of little more than a decade. The story starts with Richard's father, David, a Smithfield meat trader who joined Harry Solomon to form a company called Hillsdown. The business was a fantastic success, building up a portfolio of food brands stretching from Typhoo tea to Buxted chickens, and interests in timber, property development and insurance. David Thompson sold out of Hillsdown a little before the stock market crash in 1987, pocketing around pounds 180m. David Thompson then set about investing his fortune. Part was used to back Allan Leonard's Muirpace, while another part was used to build up the Cheveley Park Stud, one of the most successful racehorse breeding operations in the UK. Cheveley's successes have included the Grand National winner, Party Politics, and the Royal Ascot favourite, Exclusive. A couple of years ago David and Patricia Thompson joined the parade with the Queen at Royal Ascot. Leonard was also a keen investor in bloodstock. Among his horses was Top Cees, a highly successful racer on both flat and national hunt courses that he sold to a partnership of Robert Sangster and Michael Charlton, the Monaco-based investor who was a business partner of Andrew Regan. The third way David Thompson invested his money was to set his son up in business. The first deal he backed was to purchase Queens Park Rangers, the football club. Richard became chairman, as well as the target of protests by fans during a five-year reign. They gave me a hard time, he says. There is no way I would ever be the chairman of a football club again. The Thompsons sold their share of QPR in 1996 for pounds 10m, passing on the problem to Chris Wright, the founder of Chrysalis, who promptly led the club into relegation. Though the investment did not make a huge amount of money, it whetted Richard Thompson's appetite for the business of football, and he backed a bid by a team led by former stockbroker Chris Akers to take over Leeds United. The vehicle for the deal was a small firm called Storm Group. It had been involved in making cartoon
Re: [LU] Good old days
Just to say I am not privy to any info but Leeds agreeing a fee with Norwich does not mean Howson is going anywhere. Given he only has a few months left on his contract and he has refused to renew it for last 12 months he may be taking the longer view. Wait until summer when he is fully fit. Pick his club and pocket a nice signing on fee. Not seen any comments from the Howson camp. Leeds are pissed story has broke cos they wanted to rush it thro. Howson is not in the same calibre as Batty, Milner etc. He is though 1 of maybe 3 of our squad that could play in PL. Our recent slump is no coincidence with his absence. When our players see a brighter future with Norwich than Leeds it says a lot about how the club is being run. End of. Yes he hasnt scored as much this season but hes been asked to cover the cracks of a team full of average to poor, inconsistent frees and loans, there is no one else in the leeds side who does as much tracking back, covering and pushing forward creating space. Who can blame a player that has seen all the other half talented players leave in recent seasons (Gradel, johnson, Delph, Schmeicel, and some would argue kilkenny) and probably knows that any remaining ones with any talent (snoddy) or even potential (white, clayton, lees) will soon be off when bates refuses to offer anymore than any of the clubs hoping to go up will offer. Leeds is a club with no ambition and where we sell any decent player then replace them with loans frees and has beens. Why would you stay at a club that has noticably got a weaker squad than last season no one regardless of their opinion on the players can say that kilkenny johnson and gradel are significantly better than brown, vrynenn nunez/sam. Leeds are a mid table side at best this year with the quality of players available to grayson yet a ridiculous amount of fans expect playoffs or more. I agree with a lot of what you said Mark but I think the fact that Kilkenny got a better offer from Bristol Bloody City shows that we're nowhere near the financial suicide end of the spectrum. We can't even match a lower Championship team for wages yet we have one of the biggest gate revenues. There was also that table that showed that we had got the best value per point in terms of money spent on players. All this shows that Bates is a tight bugger who is stuck in the 80's and thinks that all fans are thickos and will pay regardless of the tosh on offer and also that players are overpaid primadonnas. Well he might be right on the last point but if he's the only bugger standing by that (which he is) then we are going to lose good players to other teams, bigger or smaller, and we'll never be out of this league and could go down even further. Bates has a Rochdale, Tranmere, small time club approach to business and we're fecked with him in charge. too. Financial suicie. I will NEVER get used to this position. Our football club is one of the biggest in the country, with income streams to match.
