Re: [LU] Edgar Cani

2015-01-15 Thread Brendan McWilliams
What a relief to hear that he's not coming back!

Twitter #lufc exploded in fury of course, with minimal mention of the fact that
he hasn't played hardly in TWO YEARS, couldn't trap a bag of cement when he was
playing and is now on the wrong side of 30.

As for Warnock, it's too bad that he's not seeing out the rest of the season
but why would you give him a contract after last season?

Can't fault Il Presidente on both counts, there is just that small matter of
being 4th bottom only now...

Betty - can't believe you went back down to Broken Britain ;-

Refreshing indeed though the last line saying He is the best coach we could

Still, no Becchio is please any way you look at it.

2015-01-10 Thread Brendan
Paul Beesley, the worst I've seen play for LUFC live or from my armchair.

Nigel Worthington wasn't far behind.

Palmer Deane were very limited players but nowhere near the worst of the last
20 years, stratospheres from being the worst.

Derek Lilley - in the shit front men category. Pierre Laurent. David White
became shit when we signed him...bloody Ian Rush and Fowler...

I liked Jasper...and Deano - at least they could be good sometimes. Their
unpredictability was half the fun.

Gregan had another fat, slow, old CH partner (Butler??) who was slightly worse
than Gregan.

Just after we sold Andy Linegan we got another CH from some pub side (The Brit
on Holbeck Moor?) who was OK for a couple of games (probably on adrenalin) and
then descended to being a total crock of shit but played for another half a
season - was it Beasley?

The re-signing of Becchio would be a nonsense.

reason he had a following who thought he was great, a bit like Beccio!

I'm not too surprised that there is little reaction to Scumchesters'
humiliation at the hands of the fake Dons last night - it's not easy for us to
gloat in our position!

Shame to see that a certain Mr J Beckford has at last re-discovered his scoring
boots (2 goals last night, admittedly against Crewe), and right before Notlob
play us on Saturday toogr! Hopefully their extra time exploits last
night have tired out the entire squad!

Fingers crossed that a positive result tonight will give the lads some
confidence going into the weekend.

2014-07-30 Thread Brendan McWilliams
I'm only moderately concerned:

- with the exception of McCormack we've kept the good players and binned out
the dross entirely (except maybe Kenny Warnock and i too hold some belief
that Morison may come good)

 - if we have a bad start it'll be short, Cellino will simply boot him out
after 3 or 4 games.

On a different note, is Twitter killing this list?

For me Hockaday is an odd choice but whoever we got would have a limited
shelf life and who knows he may be decent. He has spent 40years in the

Re: [LU] Fixtures

2014-07-29 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi all,

I still think that Cellino has done everything that i would have liked a new
owner to have done apart from two things:

1) the Hock

2) an influx of players not used to the english 2nd tier.

3) get the finances under control

The zillions of mails on The Hock are largely merited but miss one thing - he's
got about 3 or 4 games to make it or he's out. End of. I reckon Zola will be
installed before the end of Sept.

For the new players, i think it was Dave Nattan that pointed out that the
starting XI will still largely be half to two thirds of those from last
season...and in any case, Kebe Stewart were used to the Championship and look
how well that went.

I'm firmly in the Give them the support until they f*ck up camp.

At least we have something different now eh? When was the last time we were
linked with so many players? Or an owner was willing to spend some money

and it seems as if this money is being spent on assembling a teamwho knows

Re: [LU] ...and so it begins

2014-07-03 Thread Brendan McWilliams
At present a growing sense of nervousness but note that:

1) when I/we were doing our lists at the end of last season and who you'd
happily see never play again, they are now almost all gone. Can't fault him
there.

2) Transfers are only permitted from July 1st, the transfer embargo was only
lifted yesterday, and we've not had great success with free transfers in the
past have we?

3) I've no doubt he's lined up a string of Italians from Serie B etc - let's
hope they adapt quickly, which is not usually the case i'm afraid at any level
(Vialli, Zola apart) in the english league system for some reason.

4) Ross was ALWAYS going to go, and frankly anything over 5m (not to mention
the much mentioned 10m from Fulham) cannot be rejected by a Championship club.
Note also he'd a great season last year, but the previous three were not so
dazzling.

5) Paddy Kenny. The #17 story is obviously nonsense, and i too also think that
it's more to do with the fact that he barely played the last 4 months last
season, is getting on and is about twice the width I am.

6) The club was losing 1m a month, and the fair play rules mean that you can't
throw (a lot) of money at it?

7) Buyback of ER is surely a maze of complications due to you know who.

However, there's no getting away from the fact that it's going to end badly
with Hockaday - 4 games max.

But could it be that, maybe just maybe, it works out? Must we always go with
the usual recyling of managers that at this level that brings nothing? OK, here
I'm being wildly optimistic.

SP LUFC and Twitter is particularly entertaining at the moment. Who was it that

Re: [LU] Squad arrived in Italy

2014-07-01 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Well, look on the bright side - almost all the rubbish that we all wanted rid
from last season are now gone with even Cameron Stewart now signing for
Ipswich, and doubts about Paddy Kenny (have you seen the size of him!?).

If it's true that Fulham have offered 10m for McCormack, pff, that has to be
accepted. Obviously the question remains as to what happens with that money,
but 10m is unreal at this level and cannot be rejected.

That said, without a influx of about 10 significant players in the next 2 weeks
it looks very bad indeed.

Astonishing that Zac Thompson still hangs on in there without ever
seriously threatening the first team for getting on 5 years now. He has the
survivial skills of a cockroach in the nuclear war. Whatever drama and cuts

Euro 96??? That tournament on the whole was an abomination - dire football
throughout unless you were an English fan for 1 game (Holland).

Germany the best team so far.

What a great game, it had everything. I'm knackered just watching it!

This tournament is probably best I've ever seen (at least since Euro 96) -
no negative play, only attacking fast footy. I'm loving it!

I think I've finally grown up - I'm not bothered who wins (I don't hate
 anyone anymore)...
Brazil: the support is fantastic plus they sound like a pub side - Joe,
 Bernard, William, Fred and Hulk!
Argies: I just love watching Messi.
Germany: I love their football model so want them to prosper.
(They're the teams we're supposed to dislike)
As for the rest - some great attacking teams. Holland are my tip - after
 they tore Spain apart.

As a nation, we're miles off. I agree with someone else's point - as long
as Sky pump millions into the Premier League we won't see young English
players coming thru as foreign players will come for the money.

I guess I'll come down to reality with a bump come early August when I
travel to Millwall or see our first home game! Here's hoping I'm wrong and
Hockawho is the amswer. I'm the eternal optimist where Leeds is concerned
 but I'm fearing the worst.

Anyway, roll on Colombia v Suarez-less Uruguay. 3-1 ti Colombia.

Re: [LU] Non lu

2014-06-26 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi,

hmmm, there really is quite an extraordinary amount of hysteria about this
latest episode from the new favourite pantomine villain that is Luis Suarez.

What he has now done at least twice and looking like a third is something my 2
year old is now growing out of in the nursery. All this he's not right is
he, for goodness sake... Clearly it's a reflex that gets the better of him
when the red mist comes swirling down but why is it worse than some legendary
assaults from e.g. Scholes, Shearer or Keane where the recipients have been
booted in the face or had a career ending broken leg? It's hardly cause for
lining up ten clinical psychologists from Harley Street to give an opinion is
it? Is it worse than gouging someone's EYE in rugby?

As to his diving - alas rampant in the game - they're just as bad as any of the
laughable falls of Ashley Young - if only he got taken to task for his.

Quite why this is THE headline news, and why the english media needs a baddie
every tournament is on the whole a bit sad to say the least. This is the same
media who will have his face all over the place for the next SUPER DUPER S*Y
SUNDAY BETTER THAN THE LAST ONE etc etc. Then the muppet journalists hoping for
his execution now like he ate live new born babies will wait a month or two
then trot out the usual redemption articles.

There are two outcomes: he'll get suspended for 1 match for the unseen mild
head butt, or they'll grow a pair and ban him for a significant number of games
for the bite. End of etc, can we please stop with the witch hunt. How about a
witchhunt on something significant like why Cameron managed to create a
scenario whereby the Hacking trial could be declared null and void without a
re-trial.

Anyhow, rant over, it was more about the media than Suarez behaving worse than
my 2 year old i really have become my Dad, shouting at the TV and
everything. :-

From the beeb...

Ex-Leeds United managing director David Haigh has been arrested in Dubai
after the former owners of the club accused him of alleged financial
irregularities.

GFH, a Dubai-based private equity group, claims the alleged wrongdoing
is directly connected to their ownership and subsequent sale of Leeds.

Haigh, 36, was employed by GFH in December 2012 but resigned as an
employee earlier this year.

He strenuously denies the allegations.

However he was arrested shortly after landing in Dubai and has spent the
past three nights in custody on the strength of the allegations.

A close friend of Haigh's told the BBC: David has done absolutely
nothing wrong or illegal. He is appalled to find himself in this position.

However, as someone who knows Dubai well and respects its institutions
he is confident that the authorities will see these allegations for what
they really are and clear him from any wrongdoing.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: We are aware of the arrest of a
British National in Dubai on 18 May 2014. We are providing consular
assistance.

GFH sold the club to Italian businessman Massimo Cellino in April.

Re: [LU] Scousepool Fans

2014-04-23 Thread Brendan McWilliams
hi All,

my football club blacklist contains the same clubs, but their positions are
interchangeable, and at present it goes like:

1) Chelsea (by a considerable distance)

2) One of the Old Firm Teams (;-)

3) MUFC

4) Real Madrid

After yet another night of anti-football from a Mourinho XI vs Atlético last
night, how anyone can wish that team well in any competition is beyond me.

Due to 3) i've automatically wanted City to do well and ALSO Liverpool.

Given that Liverpool are playing great football, Suarez is genuinely world
class - like him or not - lots of young players, and let's not forget their
wonderfully named manager 

So on Sunday, come on Liverpool!

I think that the FA's further assessment of this case is merely to ensure that
this sort of thing doesn't happen again.
I may be being naive here, but I too don't think the FA can scupper Cellino's

Re: [LU] Reading report

2014-03-12 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi,

I don't rule out Admin, but at the same time I expect Cellino's bid to go
through - the FL knows that if he's rejected they are literally sinking the
club. Plus who's that chappy who heads up the FL these days? Oh yeah... (for
what it's worth).

Besides, a bit of alleged tax dodging is par for the course for any millionaire
worth his salt.

It's actually worse than the end of Colin's era, as this time a good guy
espousing football has tried and actually failed bigger.

The season is over Dave - it's yet another wasted year. I haven't felt
positive about us since we had Larry and two premiership class wingers
tearing it up. I know I'm something of a broken record on this but Bates
destroyed us when we had a chance at promotion to the promised land. Now we
have nothing. Cellino is not going to get approved, clearly. I don't know
much about Italian law but I do know this much - there will be no finality
when his case is heard hence the league will not approve him. What does this
mean for us in a takeover sense?

Re: [LU] Joke De jour - Positive Attitude

2014-03-12 Thread Brendan Osborne

Thursday night, I gradually woke up stiff as a plank in hospital's ICU, tubes
up my nose down my throat, wires monitoring every function all
around my head, hell of a pain over my left ear, and a gorgeous nurse hovering
over me. It was obvious I'd been in
a serious accident.

She looked at me deep steady and I heard her slowly say, “You may not
feel anything from the waist down.”

I managed to mumble a reply, “Can I feel your tits, then?”

NOW THAT'S A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!

 Something to break the apathy

A Man Utd fan on holiday in Bradford narrowly escaped serious injury
recently when he attempted horseback riding with no prior experience.

After mounting his horse unassisted, the horse immediately began moving.

As it galloped along at a steady and rhythmic pace, the lad, who has not
been named, began to slip sideways from the saddle.

Although attempting to grab for the horse's mane he could not get a firm
grip. He then threw his arms around the horse's neck but continued to slide
down the side of the horse.

The horse galloped along, seemingly oblivious to its slipping rider.

Finally, losing his grip, the rider attempted to leap away from the horse
and throw himself to safety... however, his foot became entangled in the
stirrup, leaving him at the mercy of the horse's pounding hooves as his head
and upper body repeatedly struck the ground.

Moments away from unconsciousness and certain death, and to his great
fortune a Leeds Utd supporter, also shopping at ALDI saw him and quickly
 unplugged the horse.

2014-03-11 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Since that Friday evening in early Feb when we were all glued to Twitter the
same thought has been going through my head - have we enough points to avoid
relegation if we fall into Administration.

44pts now and GD of -2, we'll need to get to 60pts from the remaining 12
games... it's gonna be tight.

If we do go into Admin briefly, what happens during the summer and next season
- transfer embargo for how long?

 Hello

Here are my last two updates to family and friends. If I don't answer
texts, emails, phone calls, please do be offended. Days and nights run into
one long nightmare that I cannot wake up from. My sister and brother-in-law
leave on Sunday. I will miss them terribly. I have to deal with this on my
own and I will. As long as the prayers continue, I will endure. Thank you
 for your concern,

 Paula x

Hello all. The latest on Steve. They have determined that it is not his
immune system; he does not have swine flu so not masks are not longer needed
and his door is open to allow fresh air, his white blood cells count is just
started to curve downward. He may infection and possibly more than one. He
still has the ventilator in to feed oxygen in but now the breathes taken are
his own. They are trying to bring him around slowly but if he shows any sign
of panic or if his breathing becomes laboured again, he goes back under. His
body needs him distracted to work as hard as it is. The doctors are very
careful to advise that he is still in very very critical condition and it
could still go bad. Doctors have to say this. I am grasping for any bright
spot in this situation. They have taken a biopsy of the skin on his legs to
test as they do not have any idea what he has. Hopefully the tests will be
complete tomorrow and the will tell them something or they go back to more
testing. They have taken him off some of the blood pressure meds, but his
heart still requires help. He is getting some nutrition directly into the
stomach through a tube going in his nose and down to there. He is not going
to be happy to wake up to stuff like that. I have been talking to him about
all the people out there who are praying for him and loving him in there
wishes to get well. On behalf of myself and his children and grandchildren
and all the rest of his extended family, we thank you from the bottom of our
hearts. I will update you as and when there is something to report.

Update - Spoke to the doctor today (20/2/2014) with Louise (his daughter)
there. His room door was closed as he had a watery stool and they are
checking that nothing has entered his intestine, so we wait for more test
results. The liquid nutrition continues. The skin biopsy may take a week to
come back with a result. It could be viral or a bacterial infection. The
circumstances of him getting whatever this is is a chance all of us take
everyday and it just happened that he came into something where, as the
doctor said, there was a gap in his system that made it possible to it to
get into his system and run rampant. If it is viral all they can do is let
his body handle it, with them keeping him stable, and hope his heart keeps
going. If it is bacteria, they should have something in the antibiotic
arsenal to help him. They are bringing him out of the coma to fine out if
what he has is affecting his brain and any other function. If he panics or
becomes unhelpful to the point they have trouble doing what they need to
do for him, then they will put him under. His liver, and lungs are okay.
His kidneys are not particularly okay and his heart goes into mad rhythms
sometimes. They say he is stable so we will hang on to that. He could go
either way, but I am putting my hopes on him beating this. At least they are
weeding out what it isn't and right now that list is bigger. When he turns
the right corner and starts to come back to the world of the living instead
of the half life that he now exists in, our lives will start heading in the
normal direction and I will be able to function knowing he is beating this.
Until them, I pray and I live in a fog but keep going. I tell him everyone
is out there praying for him on both sides of the pond. If prayers and love
can heal, he will be on his way to coming back to us. Thank you for all you
 are doing. xx

I've passed on my message of support to Paula's direct mail - just in case
she's not reading these messages.
If I could lighten the humour by telling Paula to ensure that they do not hook
Steve up to any machines whose manufacturer once sponsored a certain Red team
from the Manchester area. :-)
I always am hugely impressed by Steves' dedication to avoiding Sharp and AIG
products!!!

Kenny can't kick it more than 10 yards out of his box because of the
wind, so why the fk have we passed it back to him at every opportunity,
I know footballers are not always the sharpest tools in the box but how

The problem that I have with new group trying to take over Leeds is that

Re: [LU] Today

2014-02-01 Thread Brendan Osborne
Dave
I think most of us are in the same boat, not knowing what to feel or how to
react.
In the circumstances, I've gone for the simpler view - they are, and always
will be my team, so ups and downs are all part of the agony and occasional
ecstacy that it is to be associated with the (once) Mighty Whites!
I know Brian's name will be chanted today and I'm with that sentiment. I'm
hugely against his sacking despite recent results. You can't appoint a guy,
hamstring him with no funds, and then sack him. He was one of the most decent
managers that we've had in the last 10 years, and he really seemed to
understand the culture, history and expectation of the club and supporters. I
can't recall an interview with him when he didn't mention the wonderful fans.
So Arrivederci Brian, good luck to all today, and Captain Ross, rouse that team
of ours today, use whatever motivation you can from the mess of the last 24
hours, and go and get us 3 points!!

Well it was not all a dream after all !
Will be setting off to ER in half an hour or so. Before 5pm or whenever last
night I was expecting to travel to the game hoping for a good performance and
a win, and expecting to get behind Brian and the team, but now I am just
 gob-smacked
I really do not know how to feel or react - we are in turmoil, the OS still
does not mention the sacking or the take over, so I do not know who will be
in charge of either the club, or, more importantly the team. Rumour has it
Festa will be manager and there may be any number of Italians from 0 to 4
depending on whose twitter you believe.
Do I chant McDermotts name (probably) even though recent results make his
sacking almost reasonable albeit a bit premature. Do I boo GFH - will they be
 there ?
.Do I boo some Italian who may or not buy the club? I know nothing about him
other than he has fraud convictions and , like many foreign owners, likes to
sack managers quickly. If he has the money and pumps it into the club isn't
that what we have all be calling for ?

Will any demonstrations or abuse change his mind about buying the club ? Will
it affect the FL when they look at fit and proper person ?

What happens when the game kicks off , do I ignore it and concentrate on
ownership etc or cheer the players and get behind them - does that include
Varney after his refusal to play on Tuesday or was his stance warranted , the
same with Ross, do I give him a hero's welcome after his comments yesterday
which I approved of at the time or is he the selfish Judas that Simon Jordan
 tried to paint him ?

Confusion reigns in my head, I am sure a few pints, a good shot of morphine
and a chin wag with my son (making his first appearance of the season) and my
 mates will sort me out

I will do a match report and try and let those of you far away know what the
atmosphere was like and how fans have reacted

 Whatever I still want 3 points !!!

Re: [LU] I went to Rochdale

2014-01-05 Thread Brendan
GREAT report!!

Definitely half the squad are the literal definition of journeymen: Pugh,
Brown, Norris, Varney, Drury, Tonge, Warnock, EHD, Hunt - all of these are over
thirty. Although I still like Green and Pearce.

BMcD in his desperation with this lot is going through all the tactics -
yesterday sounded terrible - but to sack him having inherited all of the above
bar Hunt after just EIGHT months would be sheer lunacy.

We're just gonna have to suck it up until the contracts of the above expire
(this summer for most of them).

Subject: [LU] I went to Rochdale

So I went to Rochdale yesterday…first the good things:

- the drive over from our place is lovely, particularly the bit between
Haworth and Hebden Bridge

- the pies at Rochdale are cracking – only one option, meat potato, but
hey when it is this good who needs choice

- the DJ at the ground treated us to The Doors, Stone Roses, The Who,
Happy Mondays (and The Smiths – I know some of you like that stuff)

- Rochdale played some very attractive football that was great to watch

- I’d have their numbers 11, 12 (Lund) and 40 (Henderson) in our first
eleven straight away

- Paddy Kenny kept us in the game…

…and now everything else…

There are so many problems apparent at the moment, but this is still more or
less the team that was winning 4 or 5 out 6 only a month ago – so what has
changed. In terms of man power, we’ve got Byram back (which is a plus), Pugh is
in for Warnock and the fella we had from Forest (Tyson?) went and got injured –
I think that he had a part in getting Ross on this roll, he was mobile, fast,
and linked well. Other than that, it’s pretty much as was. There must be a
confidence thing that has happened.

Outside of Paddy, the only two Leeds players that gave it a real go were Byram
and McCormack (although both became increasingly marginal as the game went on –
probably just frustration on their part). At least they tried to move us
forward.

Yesterday’s defence of Pearce, Zak, and Wootton (I had to struggle to remember
who Wootton was)…looked like they’d never met. Lees can feel hard done to being
dropped for Wootton. But like Forest did, Rochdale, passed the ball quickly and
accurately on the ground, into feet or into the space beyond the defence and had
us turning all match. We had no answer to it and it was woeful to watch. Pearce
is a heart on the sleeve kind of defender, which works pretty well most of the
time, but if you treat everything as if you just have to go at it like a bull in
a china shop, then those with a bit of brains will side-step you, and just
generally run rings round you…they did – yesterday our left side was ripped
apart time after time after time – Pearce and Pugh between them totally passed
out of the game by lively, fast interplay and movement into space.

Zak and Wootton – rarely seen such a level of misunderstanding or lack of
communication since I left the Wrenthorpe U-11s

The midfield is a huge problem – 5 guys in there and still Rochdale’s midfield
had acres of space…the number 12 and 40…plus occasionally the 4 (Cavannagh)…ran
it from the first minute. Byram on a sort of inside right detail ahead of
Peltier, was the threat and twice they chopped him down in full flight – both
professional, both cynical and both rightly booked. So what did we do? Stopped
using Byram…nuts. I lost count of the number of times in the first half that Sam
took a ball, laid it back 10 yards to Peltier or Wootton and spun and set off
down the line…only to have to brake, double back, because Peltier, Wootton and
Austin had got themselves into a little passing triangle just inside our half…6
passes later one of them hoofs it down the line – where it should have gone
first time to Sam – and the ball is lost.

Peltier and Pugh aren’t even playing the same game as wing backs – Peltier is a
right back, playing 10 metres ahead of where a right back plays and terrified of
going further upfield…Pugh is playing left midfield and not tracking back.
Austin was dreadful yesterday – plain and simple. Murphy is odd, when we got him
I thought we were getting a Hoddle type…long passes, conducting the game etc…we
don’t appear to have got that yet, but what we have got is someone tracking back
between the centre-halfs making crunching goal saving tackles (2 vs Forest and
at least 2 yesterday). ..which at this moment in time is needed.

Up front – Smith and Ross – simply not working – they are miles apart, do not
play off each other – 3 or 4 times yesterday, Smith headed it to Ross…who headed
it back…and Smith tried to head it back for a third time…moving nowhere…no
understanding between them. Smith is immobile and lumbering, his one “strength”
is getting onto crosses from the wing…but we’re not getting anyone to the
by-line. So what is the point? Ross needs someone

Sigh I still think BMcD has his hands tied with that squad - my tuppence
worth from the other day below - although I wonder what's happened to Paul
Green and surely Norris is not as bad as Pugh or on current form Austin?

BMcD in still for me, and we'll be nowhere near relegation this year Alas
that's the only progression we can expect this year.

During the summer all of us wanted to see the back of Brown, Pugh, Pearce,
Norris, Varney, Tonge... yet ALL of them are still there as they had at least a

Admittedly Pearce has redeemed himself, but the rest we literally can't even
give them away.

Then we have Drury, Peltier, EHD, White and Poleon: Old/Injured, unreliable,
given up, and not good enough x 2.

That's half a squad there that we're stuck with until the end of the season and
it wouldn't matter if we had Mourinho managing that lot (not to mention half

Well not the start to the New Year that we wanted , especially when you look at
the League games we have coming up - Sheff Wed, Leicester and Brighton.
This was a game I thought we could win and yet at half time I was thinking that
2 nil flattered us and that only 2 poor finishes / clearances off the line
stopped it being 0 4. At the other end I could not recall a shot or chance
worthy of the name. Not good New Years Day fare for another plus 30k crowd.
At least Brian was as dissappointed as us and made changes - bringing on
Aribiyi at half time and then Poleon with 20mins to go in an effort to change
things. Everything about this game showed up our failings - a keeper who can
hardly move and cannot even take his own goal kicks, a midfield that cannot
keep or pass the ball and 2 strikers who, although both decent in their own
right, have no understanding or communication between them. I can remember as a
lad when Granada Reports (our equivalent to Yorkshire Calendar) actually had a
test with Keegan and Toshack to see if they were actually telepathic rather
than just good at reading each others game - not much chance of anyone thinking
Ross and Smith have any telepathy - quite the opposite, if Smith flicked it on
Ross was waiting for the knock down, when Smith knocked it down Ross had gone
ahead looking for the flick on.
Despite Marius showing why he had got a new contract and both Lees and Pearce
doing Ok we were ripped apart for their goals, Rhodes being left in miles of
space for their first and their second a straight forward header from a set
piece. Only a combination of Kenny and Lees and then a great tackle from Murphy
stopped it being 4 nil.
As is the norm now, a home team, losing at half time (and at the end) was booed
off. When did that become accepted behaviour ? The few Prem and other Champ
games that I have seen over the last few seasons have shown that almost
irrespective of performance etc, a home team who are not winning are met by a
chorus of boos. I get that booing is the only way for fans to show their
displeasure etc but surely not every team who are not winning at home do not
deserve barracking ? Whatever , todays performance probably did deserve the
reception they got.
Second half we did a bit better and got back into the game,a mix up in their
defence allowed Byram to rob the ball and put it on a plate for Smith to tap it
into an empty net. Not long after Mowatt hit the woodwork - a chance that could
have got us back on level terms but it was not to be (they also hit the bar
later on) and we were on the end of some poor refereeing decisions but really
we did not deserve anything from this game - Aribiyi looked light weight and
could easily become the new De Costa / Joel Griffiths / Sebastian Sorsa / Ryan
Hall ??
So all in all a very bad day at the office and with hard games to come we could
find ourselves out of play off contention by the end of the month

The only good thing was the crowd of over 30k which shows that the Bates era is
dead and buried and that fans do buy into the GFH and McDermott vision for the
future, though for how long is anyone's guess

Roll on Rochdale on Saturday and here's hoping we have a good cup run, other
than that lets hope Brian can somehow work miracles over the transfer window
and bring in some genuine talent

normally leads to a hoof as the pressure and burden of possession gets too

We have no money so don't expect any great signings - just the usual crop of

There’s nothing like a poor Leeds perfrormance to put you in a bad mood
pre-Christmas. I was looking forward to my bottle of Chateauneuf-Du-Pape
tonight after a great win over our bogey team Barnsley. What I actually feel
is completely pissed off with a performance that was so poor I really found
myself questioning the manager and a lot of the team.

How many managers do you know would play a 5-3-3 wing back system with Danny
fecking Pugh and Lee fecking Peltier as wing backs ?

First Peltier. Worse captain ever (even worse than Butler and Aizlewood) and
now is being reinvented as some sort of rampaging wing back. He’s so limited
in his play its untrue and when it comes to defending he’s not right good at
 that either. Waste of space.

Second Pugh. I really have to question the sanity of a manager who not only
pick him in a team pushing for promotion but actually play him as a wing
back. The guy can’t defend, has no pace and no skill. Granted he has a half
decent left foot but the amount of times he got into great positions and just
floated over an aimless cross was beyond frustration. He adds stability
apparently !? Give it a rest, he adds bugga all and BMD should hang his head
in shame if he thinks that this is the answer to our left sided crises.

The 5 at the back is so blatantly not working, nobody knows who is marking
who ? There are massive gaps all over the shop. Barnsley carved us apart in
the first 30 minutes, not through creative, inventive play but through the
massive holes and space that appeared on the left side of our defence. Jason
Pearce is playing as a left back, Tom Lees as a right back and our Lithuanian
(sorry still don’t know his name) is isolated as our only cenre back. The
amount of times he was left one on one at the back was criminal. I like the
look of the lad but in this system its all or nothing and he had to put in a
load of reckless challenges , most of which to his credit he got away with.
On other occasions he didn’t and Barnsley really should have taken the lead
 on more than one occasion.

In midfield we look lightweight especially with 3 players. Mowatt, a player
who I think has done ok in the games I’ve seen, didn’t look right from the
start. He really looked all at sea and maybe he was injured ‘cos BMD dragged
him off at half-time. With Mowatt having an off day it lies with Murphy and
Austin to drag us along. That ain’t gonna happen is it ?

and up front, the slowest combination of strikers in the country - Macca and
Smith. What a partnership ? Yes they’ve scored goals but on this performance
the partnership has no future whatsoever.

Back to the first half yes we had chances. Actually, I should say Matt
Smith had chances. Two very straight forward finishes. The first a Danny Pugh
ball (his best and only decent cross of the game) fell kindly and Smith
looked in control. He shot directly at the advancing keeper who made a good
save (according to people sat near me in the NE Upper). I’d say it was a bad
 miss.

then he was put through again by a great intelligent ball from Macca, he was
weak and scraped the ball into the keeper’s arms. Today, Smith made some of
Becchio’s performances look sharp. He is flat footed, tall but actually
pretty shit in the air and in terms of ability he looks like a centre half.
Actually that’s being unkind to most centre halves. John Pearson is the
nearest comparison I can make, again emphasing my point that you can be shit
but still score goals in this league. It really means feck all. Becchio is
the ultimate example of this point.

In that first half, it has to be said that Barnsley were the better side.
They played football, they passed the ball, they had a bit of pace and skill
up front. We were hopeless and most of the time despite playing on paper what
looks like a progressive 5-3-3, what we actually did most of the time is punt
it long to the hapless Smith in the hope of a knock down. You have to ask
serious questions about that first half performance. We made Barnsley look
good and they are not. Their no 11 - a 4ft player with blonde hair looked
like Lionel Messi next to Austin, Murphy and Mowatt. We really lack the
 basics at times.

We did have other chances. In fact the best chance should have been handed to
Macca. A decent bit of play from us, ended with Murphy only having to play a
simple one-two type ball in to Macca and he was in, Murphy pathetically over
cooked the pass and it went astray. Macca just looked at Murphy, arms in the
air and head shaking. I’m not surprised, it was a pass that anyone with any
 level of

 Well done James.

I attended the ceremony at the church. It was a very big turn out -
literally standing room only. It was testament to the man's generosity of
spirit and to his fellow man.

Listers will be touched to hear that amongst several items placed on a table
at the front, to represent the important things in Padraig's life, were a
Leeds United shirt and a charger cable for a laptop, which I think are
particularly poignant in our little sphere of contact. 'We' were also
mentioned by his family when they spoke, and there was even a prayer read
out to all people in supporters groups - Padraig was also active on other
Internet groups, to do with his charity cycling activities etc.

It was a moving ceremony, and I was happy to be there to help represent the
 List.

Padraig was a top bloke, and he will clearly be missed by many...

I made it up to the removal last night near Dun Laoghaire but missed the

His wife, kids and Brid were really appreciative of the efforts I made to be

Re: [LU] Satdi

2013-11-30 Thread Brendan
Hi,

The mother in law comes from a village 15km from Haro (the La Rioja wine
capital) so whilst I know fek all about wine I've been to a lot of bodegas.

Anyhow, from the little I do know I'd say EVERYTHING you see in a supermarket
be it in Spain or abroad from La Rioja is largely pish. The big bodegas sell
the average stuff only to the chains and the medium to small ones simply don't
sell to them at all as the margins are tiny.

My french colleague (who is a top lad btw) always says the Riojas are just pure
vanilla (ie additives/preservatives) and he does have a point but if you like
that ...

The threshold here from the bodega itself is €8-10 upwards (ie really
drinkable) and €20+ from a bodega that won't sell to a supermarket will be
cracking.

Also, Ribeiro del Duero are also great for reds and white Albariño from Galicia
is unbeatable.

My sincerest apologies to those uninterested in wines... But when they lose in
front of 6800 away fans, ye might as well digress. ;-)

Ok, here's my opinion of Rioja. I'm no expert, but for me Rioja is such a
strong taste that you either like it or not. I have a mate who loves Spain who
reckons that when you get above £20 for a bottle of Rioja the tastes start to
get complex and subtle. Never spent that much mysen so can't comment but you're
Rioja's in supermarkets / wine shops are just too samey for me.

As for Luke Varney, he ain't got enough about him to compare to a bottle of
Rioja from Aldi.

Re: [LU] Chelscum

2013-08-26 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Mourinho is hugely entertaining at the beginning of his 3 year max stay at Club
X, then around the mid way point of the 2nd season he becomes a bit of a pain
with the whole paranoia and victimisation tactics he employs to motivate the
players.

This accelerates into the 3rd season at which point he will have then lost the
players, the press genuinely get fed up with him, he then invents the lack of
backing from the club and/or not selecting a high profile club player - then
he moves on.

As to Chelsea itself, they have long replaced Man U at the top of my least
liked clubs.

Re: [LU] Best quote from Salah in his interview

2013-07-31 Thread Brendan Osborne
Mike, I read it differently.
The Club and the Business are separate in the eyes of the owners.
The club stands for the history, tradition and ethos that is Leeds United
football club, whereas their interests are purely in making money. Therefore
they are happy to call us the de facto owners of the Club.
Making money in football is aligned to a happy support base, so if you make
statements like this, and sack Bates, and remove all his sundry negative
business alliances with the club, reduce ticket prices etc etc you encourage
people to come back to Elland Road. This is borne out by the statistic that we
will have our biggest opening day crowd for several years, despite the lack of
(huge) investment in the transfer market.
A large regular attendance boosts the coffers (and possibly the transfer
budget) and makes us a more attractive prospect for a potential investor.
So where you might read the statement as flim flam, it is not without purpose.
I salute the fact that they recognize the fans at last - we've had years of
Bates p*ssing us off, so it's a welcome change. Ultimately it cost NOTHING to
make such statements so why not?

[LU] Last night vs Shelbourne

2013-07-30 Thread Brendan Osborne
Couple of thoughts from last nights game.
We played a very mediocre League of Ireland side who have been
struggling at the bottom of the league all season, but who had recently put a
few wins together. Despite the lack of most of our first team squad, we pretty
much bossed the game, and ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Rudi dominated the centre of the park and sprayed some lovely 40 yard
passes around from there. We seemed to be playing nice football and there was
less “hoof it up to Matt Smith” than I thought there might have been, when I
saw him on the team sheet. Smith is basically our version of Peter Crouch,
without the deft touch and fitness. He seemed to be slow and a bit heavy but
was a threat every time the ball got into the box.

Young Chris Dawson was lively in the middle of the park, and after some
initial hiccups settled well and was busy and assured on the ball. He’s small
and a little lightweight but will be one to watch for the future. Ryan Hall
scored twice on the night, but could have given the team a few more chances if
he looked up occasionally when on the ball.

The back four were comfortable all night, but that probably had more to
do with the quality of the opposition. Noel Hunt put in a good shift and looked
sharp for his 60 minutes.

Overall I was pleased with the effort they put in, but on the grounds
that most of the team from last night will be on the periphery of the first
team squad, it wasn’t really surprising that they gave their all. Overall
enjoyable for a meaningless game!!

Just in case anyone is actually interested*
The starting line up tonight is
Cairns, Thompson, Killock, Taylor, Drury, Austin, Hunt, Dawson, Mowatt, Smith,
Hall.

Austin is banned for Sat (and Chesterfield game) so that is why he is playing -
not sure what it means for Hunt and Smith, or indeed Drury and Thompson who may
have expected to be in the squad on Saturday

Just in case anyone is actually interested*
The starting line up tonight is
Cairns, Thompson, Killock, Taylor, Drury, Austin, Hunt, Dawson, Mowatt, Smith,
Hall.

Austin is banned for Sat (and Chesterfield game) so that is why he is playing -
not sure what it means for Hunt and Smith, or indeed Drury and Thompson who may
have expected to be in the squad on Saturday

Re: [LU] NON LU: Spain Brazil

2013-07-02 Thread Brendan McWilliams
DISCLAIMER: living in Spain, married to a spaniard, half spanish kids etc, thus
been roused from lurking with this thread. :-

This recent line on Spain being boring and some being glad they lost (not just
Dave Sutton below), criticism of their footballing style - if there was such a
thing as footballing BLASPHEMY or luddite then this is it.

Rather, it's more a case of simply turning on a team that have won too much
lately i.e. there was no criticism of Spain's victories in '08 or '10 when they
were the underdog and shedding their perennial loser bottler tag. We all tire
of the same team winning too much (apart from our beloved LUFC).

Recall that it was Zidane and France who put Spain out of the WC in 2006 BUT
against a Spanish team which had HALF of the players who played on Sunday.
Since then Spain changed their style a little i.e. they have had different
styles and didn't do it, but this latter one has been SO successful. If it's
not broke...?Possesion football works for them but yes they should start
looking at the Bayern Munich way with more power in central midfield - which is
exactly what Brazil did with Paulinho and Dias - which Busquets tries to do but
has faded a lot lately..

Let's not forget also that Spain were KNACKERED from both the long season and
having played ET + penalties just two days before. I still can't understand why
those who go to the Confed don't take more B players and rest the older ones.

But have they been boring? For me, absolutely not. Who remembers the tedium of
France winning in '98 or '00 with Guivarche and Dugarry, with only ZZ to inject
some quality? Or Greece in 2004, which was worse than anything Jack Charlton
had the Rep playing in the 90s. Brazil in '94? Dire dire football.

Would I rather watch Spain mix it up like England and try any number of
unsuccessful champagne passes like Gerrard up in the air to Carroll? Erm, pass
on that one (see what i did there... :-).It's not fair to mention England
here of course, but they are almost a footballing opposite. In recent years i
can't watch England play without constantly counting the number of consecutive
passes they make to each other - it rarely gets above 3 or 4. When England wins
playing like that, is it exciting? For England fans yes, but you'll know it'll
get found out and as a neutral, i think it's a sh1t way to play and no, it's
rarely exciting.

Spain's possession football also suits the fact that a number of their players
in the Spain first XI are actually not quite World Class but still they still
have won: Torres (on the slide since 2008/9), Arbeloa (truly woeful the other
night), Pique (good footballer, poor defender), Casillas (Mou was in large part
right, although great at 1-on-1s), Navas has doesn't score goals and the final
pass hasn't been great of late, then theres Valdés (a David James calamity
every 5th match).

Not to mention the fact that this is actually a VERY small team physically. Is
it boring to see little guys dink their way past clodders in midfield and
keeping the ball off them? It is FOOT ball afterall and anything that is not
lamping a ball up to a beanpole donkey up front for a hopeful knockdown cannot
be bad.

Again, i'm biased, but the FC Barcelona of the last 4 years has been IMHO the
best quality football there has ever been and if you're not excited by Messi or
Villa then fek knows.

Hasta Luego! :-

I see your point, but you are comparing a current day 2nd tier English club
with the World Champions. Well done to Spain and Barcelona for their
 respective triumphs, but
they have created a bland rigid style with no option to change and
presumably no intention of ever trying to. (Whilst Pat Nevin's observations
were interesting, it doesn't change the fact that it's boring.)
This was clearly shown when they were losing 3-0 to Brazil the other night
and a change of tempo / style was needed and they weren't able to. A lot of
managers say that they concentrate on what their own team does and not worry
 so much about the oppo.
I believe this idea to have faults. It's the team that can adapt best to
what the opposition is doing that bosses the game. Spain could not adapt to
what Brazil were throwing at them
and just continued as they were and went on to concede more goals.

I don't consider myself audacious one bit, but the Spanish way which has
worked for them for so long is being replaced by a multi paced / styled
system as shown by the likes of Brazil and Bayern.
And the big point - it's great to watch!

One or two players with 10% of the likes of Iniesta's quality would be
dragged down by the other donkeys in the team. Think big, we need a bunch of
them. I wouldn't sell my soul
 though to

Re: [LU] NON LU: Spain Brazil

2013-07-02 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Again, see previous email and my disclaimer and bias, BUT there have of
course been some boring matches with Spain, largely during Euro 2012 - but one
has to blame the opposition they were up against and the tactics they employed
to negate them.

Two dire games involving Spain were the matches last year against France (Euro
QF) and then the SF against Portugal.

Both France Portugal did nothing whatsoever beyond parking the bus as per
what Mourinho had Inter Milan do against FCB in the CL Semi final of 2010. Both
oppositions had 1 true creative player - Ribery, Ronaldo - with the remainder
not likely to thread a pass like Pirlo.

The surprise of Euro 2012 was how Italy didn't employ anthing remotely like
catenaccio in any match - in particular the first game against Spain which was
an absolute belter. Italy again tried to play and attack in the final, and
Spain took full advantage in a far from boring match.

Iniesta and Xavi are simply not capable of playing boring football - they are
constantly looking for the killer pass and if they can't do that they short
pass it keeping possession.

Anyhow, with new signing Luke Murphy we'll be making the same complaint very
soon!

Btw, any takers yet for Tonge, Brown-eh, Pugh, Pearce, Varney and Norris yet???
Actually, do we want rid of Tonge?

Spain have played some of the best passing football the world has ever seen -
even in the Uruguay match some of the layoffs were superb, and how they only
got 2 is beyond me. Spain have also played some of the most boring footie too
on occasion - mind numbing stuff . Some teams will find them out, most won't!

To deny their absolute class is obtuse, but to deny how boring they are 'at
 times' is to ignore reality.

 Right, off the fence...

Re: [LU] IT Support Costs

2012-10-02 Thread Brendan Osborne

Verner From my experience IT costs tend to be in half day or day chunks (covers
you for travel to and from their premises etc) and depending on complexity and
size of client you're dealing with, somewhere between £500 and £750 daily -
this equates to between £60 and £95 hourly. Go top end to give yerself some
wriggle room! I work as a product consultant for a software company
(internationally) and our standard rate is US$1000 daily. Hope this helps!
