[LU] Non LU iPhones

2013-10-31 Thread Sutton / Smail
If you update ios by wifi on the device, it will leave a whopping
installation file in it's trail on your device (1.2GB on an iphone 4S in my
case)
There may be a way to remove it, but not under Apple's current cloak and
dagger / secret squirrel way of thinking and rolling out updates.
Best way to update is via iTunes so that you can delete the installation
file after the install is complete.
My 4S started the update whiteout my instruction and I was somewhat forced
to complete it (via itunes of course)
IOS 7 for me is a very wishy washy pale looking affair on my 4S but does run
fine with all the processor intensive pretty looks and animations turned
off.

Would I revert to ios 6.1.3 if I had the chance? Yes - for sure!
As somebody else said in similar words IOS 7 heavily dilutes Apple's
hardware high quality and is no better than tolerable

For all the bad press Becchio receives I seem to remember many 1-0

Even if they are tap ins, you need to be there to do it and he seems to be

I'd have him back if he can muster a few goals again. We don't have many

we can pass across the pitch (and back) all day and achieve nothing.

Just strikes me as a bit of desperation. Maybe a PR stunt to keep the fans
onside for a bit longer. We're looking at bringing in an Arsenal player and
your old favourite Becchio.

BMD 'I asked about Becchio and he isn't available'

Why bother telling us then we don't care. Is this his strategy ? did he
consider this when he let Morrison go ? Pathetic ! Worrying times ahead I
think.

This is the 21st Century. The modern striker (alright not that modern, it's
been like this since at least the days of Allan Clarke) must do so much more
than score goals. Becchio has one huge and pivotal weaknessdreadful
ball control. This means that 95% of the time when the ball is played up to
him, we lose possession. No decent team can play with a striker who cannot hold
the ball up.

He may have scored a lot of goals (some of which were surprisingly brilliant)
during his years at Elland Road, but what was our win-loss record over that
time? Not great.

Re: [LU] LU Were we good for our victory

2013-08-28 Thread Sutton / Smail
Good teams that win on a bad day have the luxury of being a good team that
had a blip.
We've had a good start to the season - I'm sure nobody would disagree, but if
any team is
outplayed on a regular basis as we were against Ipswich for periods of that
game, then the long term outlook
is not good. A team playing well and losing is less of a problem than a team
winning against the run of play in my book.
I suppose there is the psychological advantage of winning that strengthens team
core and self belief, but with the risk of missing the reality of what's really
happening.
In the end though, when it all averages out, teams that are outplayed on a
regular basis, lose games.
Perhaps we're working towards that good team tag so we can afford a bad day
victory in the knowledge that we'll be back to normal for the next game.
Quite a simple thought process really!

Austin is a liability - a wall of muscle and steel perhaps, but badly

I'd get rid now instead of wasting resources trying to make him into

0-0 then at Leicester - dour old game perhaps, but it's early days for all.
Defeat avoided must be a plus against a promotion favourite on their patch.

Not so much football more life
I suppose One man's poison is another man's medicine.
If every team has to carry a luxury donkey, then Rudy must be ours (captaincy
and all)
I used to get the same feeling when Carlton Palmer was on the ball or
challenging somebody,
but there was a comedy element with his playing style that made it vaguely
entertaining if not unpredictable.
I don't see this in Austin - he's predictably and consistently a poor passer
and a conceder of free kicks. He will have better matches I'm sure
from time to time and I'll be the first to congratulate him if and when he
turns the corner. In the meantime though, he'll cost us.

Yes, of course you're right, I suppose we have to accept them as World and

to accept their same old same old dull routine.
Perhaps the climate does influence style and it might help to explain why some
British teams employ long ball tactics - to keep the strikers from freezing on
winter fixtures?
Maybe Torres believes his comment to be well founded - same question please to
the other members of the Spanish squad, perhaps they'd all answer in the same

unworthy? for real? Its not really THAT easy to win mate, I thought you d
know by now. I d be more inclined to agree if you said Greece and Italy but not
spain.

I too dislike Spains style of playing and was very happy to see them loose.
The thing is that Brazil are known for the same style of football, pass the
bass around for a bit and then explode into something. Does it have to do with
playing under sun/heat? Heat tends to slow things around right? So no wonder
theres a culture for that style of playing in warm countries if my theory is
somewhat correct.

Having said that, Spain took that style of play to the extreme. its boring to
watch and Im ready for someone else, just not fuxxxing italy.

On a different note: Torres made a dumb comment. There is not 1 way of
playing football, there is not one way of making music etc.

Really? So how should football be played.

Yeah Barca and Spain don't have a 'plan B' but their 'plan A' is football
played well and is great to watch imho. Beats the long ball
play-it-up-to-the-big-man crap we have been dishing out for so long.

Re: [LU] NON LU: Spain Brazil

2013-07-02 Thread Sutton / Smail
I see your point, but you are comparing a current day 2nd tier English club
with the World Champions. Well done to Spain and Barcelona for their
respective triumphs, but
they have created a bland rigid style with no option to change and
presumably no intention of ever trying to. (Whilst Pat Nevin's observations
were interesting, it doesn't change the fact that it's boring.)
This was clearly shown when they were losing 3-0 to Brazil the other night
and a change of tempo / style was needed and they weren't able to. A lot of
managers say that they concentrate on what their own team does and not worry
so much about the oppo.
I believe this idea to have faults. It's the team that can adapt best to
what the opposition is doing that bosses the game. Spain could not adapt to
what Brazil were throwing at them

and just continued as they were and went on to concede more goals.

I don't consider myself audacious one bit, but the Spanish way which has
worked for them for so long is being replaced by a multi paced / styled
system as shown by the likes of Brazil and Bayern.

And the big point - it's great to watch!

One or two players with 10% of the likes of Iniesta's quality would be
dragged down by the other donkeys in the team. Think big, we need a bunch of
them. I wouldn't sell my soul

though to finance or achieve this.

How any of us has the audacity to deride the style of play that has brought
success to Barcelona / Spain, etc is laughable whilst we pay to watch woeful
professionals struggle to string together a handful of passes.
Whilst at times it can appear boring, how many of us have complained about a
players inability to play an incisive pass or merely keep procession, as
Rich W would say these are the basics and something that our former 'best'
(according to records) player so clearly lacked.

I would willingly sell my soul to the devil to be able to see a player that
possesses 10% of Iniesta's ability and vision don a Leeds shirt, anyone who
thinks otherwise is more than welcome to wallow in mediocrity.

All very cleaver sucking in the oppo etc, but dull to watch. It has made

Bayern for example are the contrast. They mix up so many different styles

Managers have this unique attribute by where they perform badly and then are
welcomed with open arms by another club.
In the normal world of work, bad performers receive a bad reputation and
can't find employment - not in football management.
This may be because that there isn't that many of them available or because
of a badly performing squad, which is not the managers
fault of course - is it?? He can't be held responsible for that now can
he - ha! Perhaps lack of funds for new players is the normal
escape route. I'm looking forward to the first female manager - it must

From my understanding, Wigan have only allowed him to talk to Everton, he
hasn't been sacked or resigned. If Everton and Martinez agree terms then
they will need to pay off the last year of his contract.

Yes, but only due to the terms of the contract. So Stuart Pearce had his
written so that if he was sacked he got no compensation (If I'm sacked,
I've failed, so why should I get any money), but equally he could walk away
with no hassle.

But most managers have some sort of reciprocal compensation clause if

If you're one of those still grieving over what happened in 1975, don't read

However, as it's been a major European footballing event and being a large

these pages.

So, what a football lesson for the mighty Barcelona. Pretty much a repeat of
the first leg. I haven't seen anything like this over the two legs for a
very long time. Bayern outeverythinged them.
Particularly pleasing for me as I'm not a fan of the endless tippy tappy
boring passing game that Barce always play (and appear to have no plan B)
compared to the controlled blood and thunder
attacks that Bayern stage contrasted by their own passing game when it
suited them as if to take the mick out of the Barce ethic on their home
patch.

I have a German work colleague who is very anti Bayern, but he agreed
reluctantly that after the first leg they were incredible.

Roll on the final, I could watch this style all day. Dortmund will probably
win after all that, which is fine by me as long as we get more of the

Given that this is all pure speculation, why would somebody like Di Matteo

For that matter, why would anyone of substance? All this talk of Mc
Dermott, Coyle and even the Chosen One Really?? We are now a sad memory of
the club we were 13 years ago and in spite of a healthy fan base and Premier
League facilities, there's not a lot else apart from hope. It'll be Lee
Clark or Alex Mcleish - somebody suitably poor to take charge of a poor club
I'll bet. Maybe I underestimate the pulling power of our club, but I can't
see anybody taking the job that we'll be excited about.

We are in a dilemma now given the chance we may be relegated. Does the board
hang on to Redfern hoping he'll get the points necessary to stay up and wait
for the summer to get our man who may not fancy a League One outfit, or,
get somebody NOW that stands a better chance of saving us in the interim? I
don't know. Redefern doesn't inspire me with his I'll do you a favour again

I'm glad all the shameful rants about Maggie have died down. She made a lot

human (she was!) - a mother and grandmother, just like we all have or have
had at some stage in our own lives. She deserves common human respect as she

I disagree. Winning habits breed confidence and more wins. Just as a drawing
and losing habit drags a team down, like us.
Even if Forest's push is short lived, it may get them promoted even for one

I'm not sure if this is the way for a team to blag itself into the top

have little future. I'd much preferto be drawing (or perhaps even losing)
having played a positive game and trying to do all the right things. I don't
understand how sometimes we play this long hoof ball and other times we play
passing - or at least try to. Perhaps it's to do with the quality of the
oppo, if we're being over-run then panichoofing tactics are forced upon us.
Or does NW brief the team before hand and say Ok guys, passing didn't work
last week, let's try our hoofing plan todayI wonder if the reduced match
price tickets and the larger crowds ended up with more revenue. Even if it
was break even in money terms, a bigger home crowdhelps the team. Will this

I don't watch many games these days, in fact I struggle to wade through
highlights programmes sometimes. I started watching Arsenal and Bayern last
night and watched it all in the end. Bayern were superb I thought and a
pleasure to watch. Arsenal did have a go, but the gap in quality and speed
was just too great. When Arsenal got the corner that lead to their goal
(shocker of a decision when the deflected shot clearly came off the Arsenal
player) I did think how unfair it would be if they scored from it - they
did! A great game to witness though. I'd turn up to watch this standard

I've seen Messi quite a bit (who hasn't) and I'm still waiting to see him do

Yep, that's exactly what I was watching and the pencil line for me shows it
as off side. You obviously see it differently.
There was a lot of rough and tumble in the goal mouth before Oldham's second
goal, but more times than not in this day and age, keepers get the benefit -
wrongly or rightly, that's what happens.
Still, it's all subjective and that's what keeps us all going through the

Hope they do better in the replay than we did today against City.

Class perhaps, but it was shown to be offside. Their second goal was surely

Good show from Oldham and nobody would deny them a replay, but two goals

The only consolation is that all teams gain and suffer from this so I

2013-02-11 Thread Sutton / Smail
Whoever ends up buying our currently sorry establishment has GOT to make
substantial funds available to purchase carefully selected players by a
carefully selected manager. I don't think Warnock is that manager. It's no
good saying that players aren't available Oh yes they are if the money is
right. Perhaps not to the Peter R's limit though.
I reckon that combination would go a long way to help us move on. Two
critical components, one no good without the other!

Sadly, we'd have to clear out all the dead wood and virtually start again.
All rather pie in the sky, I know, but if we're serious about this (are we?)
then something along those lines is what's got to happen.
I see Warnock saying that until it's mathematically impossible to achieve
promotion, we have a chance. Wrong! we don't. Teams don't turn into
something different overnight and maintain it, we all know that!

Simple!

I have little against Becchio. He was a striker paid to score goals - he
did - lots of them! Albeit from a yard or two, that makes no difference
given the limited supply and support.
He was flexible and adaptable enough to see his place in the team setup and
did us proud.
There does appear to be a well trodden transfer path between us and
Norwich - we've turned into a player supply line for a top flight team, I
find this mildly humiliating, but then we are no longer a big club so in
some ways it's fair pickings.

Let's hope the new blood comes good - you never can tell.

Re: [LU] Slightly less abject shite than usual

2013-01-19 Thread Sutton / Smail

Not a report, I wasn't there, just an opinion.
I recall reading an article a few months ago (can't remember where or by
whom) taking all the Championship teams one by one. By this time we had
dropped from our higher league position earlier in the season and the
thinking was that this was no great surprise as many of our games had been
on a knife edge and a single goal decided it. Nothing really wrong with that
except that we sail so close to the wind all the time and can't really look
back at games we've won with style. I would so much prefer to be drawing or
even losing games having played well as this usually shows a great future.
As the clichés say If you keep doing the right things it will eventually
pay you back or something like that. Problem is, we don't! It's the huff
and puff and long ball stuff we seem to hear about all the time. 2 wins out
of 2 would normally be a good omen (and it may still be) but when a team is
disjointed and lacks direction, that will also find you out.

I was hoping for a good 4-0 win to help our appalling goal difference. I
would have taken a draw or even a home defeat if the comments from those
at the game were saying we played some great stuff
and nobody could quite believe how we didn't score or win - that would
bode well for the future. Early reports suggest though we beat the bottom
club with a hoof and hope based game. This must give rise to an even
greater salute and acknowledgement to those faithful who attend to watch
such depressing rubbish week in week out. And to think our reward for
beating Birmingham is the prospect of a home mauling by Spurs (a la
Chelsea) - will it be a full house again based on the You never know
principle? Perhaps not, based on the Oh yes you do theory.

A manager can shape how a team plays - does Warnock ask his defenders to
whack it up there in the hope that our strikers will make something of it.
He could forbid this tactic but obviously doesn't.
Perhaps though he does and his posse of poor players have neither the
brain, skill or presence of mind to to do anything else. Does he bollock
them afterwards for this play before doing his post match interview when
he makes a generic comment about it being a great game and anyone can beat
anyone in this league twaddle with his rye smile. I'd like him so say
something controversial for once and try and show passion rather than just
a comment you'd expect from a neutral fan who had nothing better to do on
the day.

Looks like Warnock is not going to make his record breaking promotion this
season at least. Will our new owners give him more time I wonder? Based on
the muppets he's brought in so far (apart from Diouf and Kenny for
example) I fear (hope) not. He would defend this saying Bates held the
money back and that's all he could get at he time with the funds. Who
knows the truth? For me, we've been stuck nowhere for too long and our
current league position is very flattering with the inevitable, and
meaningless, Spurs home defeat just round the corner.

I wonder if the squad is out of the bath after today's victory or are they
still all sitting there (water now tepid) contemplating in silence how
rubbish you have to be to beat the bottom club by a margin of 1 goal?

Just imagine the catastrophe of promotion with this setup (not that it's
likely) I keep saying it, but we need to do a Swansea and go up with true
style to have any chance of not being next season's QPR.
Another couple of seasons, at least, I'd say to prepare for that. Have to
think long term.

Re: [LU] Losing

2012-12-26 Thread Sutton / Smail
Austin was shocking today (not to even mention the the own goal) He was
slow, got caught in possession and gave the ball away when under no
pressure. I thought when we lost him through injury that he'd be a loss. I
know we all need to get back after injury, but look at Somma in comparison,
he's been out for a much longer spell and he looked sharp, thoughtful and
always looked like something might happen when we was involved. Thank
goodness he's back.

It was a poor game and Forest weren't that great, it's just that we were
clueless with no bite when going forward. Our heads dropped and we were a
beaten team soon after they took the lead. Forest deserved to win a poor
contest. 3 goals in seven minutes conceded was appalling and it could have
been 4 if not for offside. Back to earth with a bang again. League position
wise we haven't suffered too badly this time. but in the big picture scheme,
we have!

Back to Austine's own goal - had he left it, the ball would have arrived at
the feet of 3 of our defenders who would have easily cleared - Austin was
obviously oblivious to this.

Start again

[LU] Another humiliation

2012-12-19 Thread Sutton / Smail
We were not disgraced, but as others have said What did you expect For all
the hype and positive talk on the run up to this game, this had defeat
written all over it unless we were to be blessed with the
same set of attributes that graced us when we beat Man U on that memorable
day a few seasons ago with the Beckford goal.

Two main things struck me about this game.

1. Chelsea did a Barcelona on us in that when we had possession. they were
up our arses and gave us no time to play anything more than panic hoofs. We
did seem to manage to get the ball to feet a few times. Then when they got
the ball, they slowed it down
to build a move and we allowed them time and space to do that, just as
Barcelona's opponents do. I'm no Barcelona fan by the way. but I did see a
similarity.

2. We allowed them far too much time and space on the edge of our box - they
were happy to shoot from there sometimes.

All in all, we've had a chance to measure ourselves against the current
European Champions who on the night played a strong team contrary to what I
thought they'd do.

We're a long way off, but there is a gulf between the divisions as we all
know. If and when we do go up, we have to do it with a degree of style (a la
Swansea) to have any chance of competing in the Premier League.

Don't be too dis heartened, they were simply far too good for us as was
always going to be the case. I've only seen the first 2 goals, but Beccio's
finish was top flight. If goals like is all all he ever does for us, it's
more than enough to justify his selection

[LU] Promotion?

2012-12-01 Thread Sutton / Smail
Isn't it funnywe go on a three game wining run, up to tenth and we're
all thinking of promotion again after seven or eight games without a win
when we're all talking about relegation. This is what Warnock seemed to be
saying in his post match comments today. And as for Beccio, for all his
faults and shortcomings, he does seem to get a few goals.
Perhaps Warnock knows something that we don't about him (can't think what
that would be?) and that's why he's manager and gets the big bucks!

Good for the soul though, this winning lark.
Still concerned about our shocking goal difference

[LU] NON LU: Juve

2012-11-21 Thread Sutton / Smail
Didn't they look good last night. So much more exciting watchable than
boring Barcelona.
Sadly, it doesn't change the fact that Chelsea's 3rd or 4th string could hit
10 goals against us these days. It pains me to think that perhaps a full
house at Elland Road will have to witness
the event and the gross embarrassment of live TV coverage. On the other
hand, miracles can happen with divine intervention.

However, that's the least of our current problems I suppose.

I think this is a great idea. We're all probably partially anesthetised by
now anyway (whether we know it or not) but to make it official makes sense
in the current LU climate. What's the point of so much un necessary pain?
The funny elements start to show through and the investment in supporting
your team does have some plus points - not perhaps the usual ones mind.
Those poor season ticket holders are probably fighting the gloom in the hope

I couldn't take yet another draw, so a defeat at the hands of Burnley
breaks the mould in some kind of reverse thinking way. Perhaps a few more of

just plain old rubbish and need total replacement. Grayson's name appears
quite frequently and it seems that he fairs quite well now that we have
something to compare him to. Almost unthinkable how we have reached the last
8 of the league cup - contrastingly unthinkable how we could progress passed
Chelsea into the last 4. I think I read somewhere that they are the current

Yes - it could be quite funny. Will 40,000 turn out to witness it? Not to
mention the live tv audience of millions falling over with laughter at home.
As things stand it could be 10, although Di Matteo won't waste resources on
us, he'll play a 2nd or 3rd string with a few big guns on the bench, just
incase.
Wasting out time in the league cup is a joke anyway, who cares...I'll take

Perhaps he's waiting for the buy out to complete and get some new players

not top flight material by quite a long chalk. Look at Southampton last

Re: [LU] Not good

2012-08-22 Thread Sutton / Smail
This is a big worry. Whilst very respectable to lose to a team like
Blackpool, it's horrible to think that we were out -everthinged in this
match which by the sounds of it we should have lost by a greater margin. I'm
happy to lose whilst we are trying to do the right things, but hoofing up
long and hopeful balls is awful, but it does go hand in hand with being
outplayed and being uncomfortable in possession whilst under pressure. I
hope the gulf between the sides didn't get to an embarrassing stage. Having
said all that, our first few games do include all of the relegated sides.
Early days I suppose.

[LU] New levels of indifference

2012-06-25 Thread Sutton / Smail
I thought the England team gave all they had - their downfall was mainly
that they were outplayed and outthought. Apart from some terrible passing
and hoofs up the park (which is in line with a team uncomfortable with the
ball and under pressure aka Leeds United) there was no more in the tank. I
think it's more appropriate to be giving credit to the Italian side who
prevented England playing.
What is depressing is that England as a footballing nation have fallen
further behind and although the Premiership is perceived as one of the
best leagues, when it comes down it, England are barely in the top six
globally. We're out now which is about right, we qualified from a weak group
and if Italy hadn't seen us off, rest assured Germany or Spain would have.
So when everyone's gutted about the exit defeat, I can't help thinking
what people really expected. At least we have avoided the humiliation of a
thrashing by Germany or Spain.
