Re: [LU] Max Gradel

2013-12-18 Thread MarkBursa
>>I don't think that the stadium should be a place for car salesman or
Jehovah's Witness conferences, as per Bates and his 'diversified income stream'
 shit.<<

OK, so just leave that massive bricks-and-mortar asset standing unused for
340 days of the year. Who cares if car dealers or crazy cult corner pays
the club money to use a conference room on a wet Tuesday in February when
we're not playing? It's a good source of revenue. Can't you see that?

>>My Bates comment is completely accurate - you supported most of the
projects he ran whilst sucking money out of the football club. You can't just
change sides now he's gone. It's just the way that things work, I'm
afraid.<<

No, your Bates comment is not accurate. My comments were as relevant to
GFH, Risible or Manny Cussins. I was talking about the BUSINESS of running a
Football Club. Using a skill set called "Objectiivity", which is clearly
beyond you.

Irrelevant who's in charge. At the time we were stuck with Bates as
chairman. Nothing much we could do about that, was there. Though I do recall
you
coming up with one idea. Just as well it was on this list, not Twitter or
Facebook, as the finest lawyers in Monaco would have found another source of
revenue - you.

>>I'm sure that there are other sources of funding available to build
conference centres and loss making radio stations and restaurants. That funding
still needs to be paid back out if the one main source of income for the
club - match going fans and player sales. See the last ten years. Perhaps
you should support Vodaphone, Virgin or Sainsbury's?<<

Are you just being wilfully dim? If you borrowed money to build a
conference centre, you should be working to a business plan, where the revenue
from
the conference centre would pay off the money you borrowed over a set
period. After that you're generating profits to plough back into the core
business.

Can't you grasp this? It's nothing to do with the personalities involved.
Just strategies for running a business.

Ian, why do you assume I simply get information from reading the papers?
How do you know I don't have better sources?

I remain a supporter of developing the stadium. It's pretty grim in many
places compared to state-of-the-art premiership grounds. Don't you think we
shouldn't have a decent stadium?

The point I have on several occasions tried to make to you is that
different funding sources are available for capital projects such as building
developments compared to the funding needed for player transfers. It's just
the
way business funding works. The club is a business and should be looking to
maximise whatever profit opportunity is available - for the benefit of the
 business.

Nothing to do with Bates, or whoever is in the boardroom. Your Bates
comment is a cheap shot, and wholly innacurate.

Frankly Ian, I find most of your posts to be childish and immature.
Everything is so black & white with you. Perhaps you should support Newcastle.

There's no point in arguing - neither of us will change our minds. I will

redeveloping the ground etc and have zero credibility with me when it comes to
this stuff.

But there was no option for Smith to stay. ManU offered £7m for him. Under
what circumstances would the management of a failing business have refused
that?

What Smith said was irrelevant. He had no option to stay, even playing for
nothing.

I have a pretty good idea about the deal. What was reported at the time

He's on nothing like £30k. I bet top wage at Norwich is less than half

4, run 3, 6 is highly likely at the end of a match when you need 7 off 3 and
you cock up the 3! Running seven is something I've never seen at any decent
standard of cricket. And as we have two batsmen on 94, we should assume this is
not an under-11s 20-over thrash? Have you ever seen anyone run seven?

Ok, here goes...

First batsman hits a four off the first ball.
He then hits three off the second ball but the umpire rules the second run was
short. So he gets his century but the batsmen have changed ends and still need
one to win.
Second batsman hits a six off the last ball to win the match and complete his

80 Years ago today- Sunderland boss denies being a Fascist
Thu 04th Apr 2013 13:07 by Tim Whelan

Looking back at the archives from April 1933, we find that the new
Sunderland manager, Benito Mussolini, gave a terse statement to a press
conference in which he denied having Fascist sympathies.

The new Sunderland manager is a very excitable bald Italian, who has
previously been photographed giving straight-arm salutes to large crowds of
right wing supporters in Rome, but yesterday he was claiming to have been
misquoted when he said "I'm a Fascist, not a Racist".

Mussolini said "Like my great idol, Paulo Di Canio, I am opposed to
violence
and some of my best friends are Jewish. Furthermore, I've no intention of
forming an alliance with the new Nazi regime in Germany".

He also promised to stick to football while he was in charge of Sunderland,
without getting involved in politics. "Back in Italy I am famous for making
the trains run on time, so you can see that I've had no influence at all on
the performance of Northern Rail in this part of England".

Looking to the future, Benito said he was inspired by the 'Invest in
Africa'
logo on the Sunderland shirt. "I'm already running a brutal colonial regime
in Libya, and I've got some exciting ideas as to how we can take this
forward in the next few years by invading Abyssinia."

But a lot of Sunderland fans remain unconvinced that Il Duce' was a wise
choice to be their next manager. Ramsay McDonald has already resigned as a
director, and thousands of unemployed men in nearby Jarrow are about to
start a march all the way to London to protest about his appointment.

If they do same again and we do our usual v derby we are 4-5 points depending

IF ONLY... The game in May 72 v Wolves had been played two days later. We would
have won the double, and Clough would not have won the league with Derby. Would
have changed a lot of things.

Clough's skill was moulding teams out of unknown players. He patently could not
handle established star players, as was proven in those 44 fatal days.

He'd have been equally useless as England manager.

Re: [LU] Albert Johansen (was Robbie Rogers)

2013-02-16 Thread MarkBursa
Rick,

The Doctor is skimping on the meds again.

I've read interviews with Albert where he details how welcome he was made
to feel in the Leeds dressing room. He'd come from South African apartheid,
and expected the changing rooms to be segregated. His team-mates told him
not to be so daft, and threw him in the bath. Race was not an issue in the
Leeds team, for sure.

He was much loved by Leeds fans too. There were virtually no black players
at this time (Clyde Best at west Ham was the only other one I can remember
from the '60s). Sure there would have been the usual shot from away fans,
inevitably.

Personally, as a young lad who'd been captivated by the 66 World Cup (where
black players such as Pele, and especially Eusebio, had been showcased) it
seemed exciting that we had Albert in our team. And he was very good - a
proper, pacy winger.

Sadly injuries (including the sort that would be easily fixable with a bit
of keyhole surgery) really disrupted his career. He got crocked in the 65
cup final. And later Peter Lorimer made the right side of midfield his own,
so Albert was on the fringes.

He wasn't looked after when he finished playing, and the story of latter
years were was a sad one. Not sure these lessons have been learned, looking
at Gazza, Michael Johnson etc.

Re: [LU] LU: Stand up for GFH

2013-01-29 Thread MarkBursa
A lot depends on what happens at QPR. Before 'arry took over, we were in
for several of Colin's old lags - Mackie, Hill and Derry.

But Redknapp seems to be using these players to put some backbone into QPR,
and he'll only sell if he can bring in better players.

That depends on who Spurs are prepared to let go, as Harry wants trusted
players who can do a quick fix for him.

Actually QPR are in a similar position to us - they're about four points
off where they want to be, and both managers want to bridge the gap using the
same sort of tough players who've done it before.

I don't expect we'll see much action until the last day.

There's a surprising amount of anti-new-owners stuff coming out - I'm never one
to support 'The Man', but FFS, give 'em a chance! There's no point complaining
about a lack of investment when they're all of 3 working days into the transfer
window. We all know that the majority of deals (somewhat unfathomably) go
through in the last few days, not the first few.

And in any case, they've made it clear that they're not sugar daddies with a
limitless pot o' gold, so I would expect that the best we can hope for is some
sensible squad bolstering by the end of the month.

As for getting rid of Bates for good - that's a pipe dream, so get over it. It
seems clear that having him around was a condition of the sale, so we just have
to hope that they push him out of the day to day running of the club (and all
our minds) ASAP...

Re: [LU] Takeover done !!!

2012-11-21 Thread MarkBursa

Look at the history of Bates and Chelsea. This is the "Matthew Harding"
stage. Hopefully it'll bring about enough money to get us competitive with
the Leicesters and Cardiffs and out of this league by the end of next season.
It's still just possible (if unlikely) this season if the money is
available in January and Warnock buys well.

The "Abramovich" stage comes when we're back in the prem. That's when
we'll finally get rid of Bates. Meanwhile he's got a couple more years of
sitting on league committees, stirring up shit.

I'm sure GFH is some kind of stalking horse for a big investor, which will
only press teh button when we're in the prem.

M

>>Although I am a little suspicious about the deal, as there are many
questions yet to be answered, can't we take it on face value?

After 21st Dec Bates will be Chairman in name only - quite a normal step I
believe when new business owners take over a going concern. GFH C (with a
financial backer) will be 100% owners. Surely that means no more money
into Bates' pockets? Isn't this the main reason the "boycotters" were
staying away?

I honestly think that the majority of the boycotters would come up with any
excuse not to go, instead of just admitting:

- I don't miss it
- I've grown out of it
- I can't afford it
- I've found other things to do
- I prefer shopping with the wife
- I prefer decorating with the wife
- The wife says I don't want to go anymore ;-)

What I (we?) wanted was new investors to inject cash into the playing team
- isn't this what we've got? Why not give them our support, at least you
can stop again if they don't back up their talk after the transfer window?

I for one am taking it on face value - we have new owners. Give it a
chance.

Should have got at least 12 months, and a life ban from all football.
Tagged till the day he dies and forbidden from travelling when Leeds are
playing. The law, I'm afraid, is an ass.

4 months inside, more than likely released on licence in 2.

Not much detail has been released but I am assuming that the 4 months
inside is
for the breach of the previous banning order rather than the assault.

will try to find this man, there were names, pictures, phone numbers all

(I
still can not believe why he was not caught by the guards on his way back

Twat's a serial offender though - already on a banning order. Courts will make
an example of him surely, and he'll also get a life ban. Something's wrong if
he doesn't.

There are a couple of obvious offences in this;
Firstly, entering the field of play. This is normally dealt with by way of a
fine.
Secondly, the assault on Kirkland, this is possibly a Common Assault (the CPS
could say different), this can bring a maximum sentence of up to 26 weeks .

If the offender gets custody an ancillary banning order from attending football
matches, travelling on the railways on matchdays is put in place for 10 years.

Re: [LU] Spending on players

2012-09-14 Thread MarkBursa
How much money has Bates personally taken out of the club? Do you know?

Boxes bring in good revenue. The ground is being refurbed with borrowed
money - money that could not be borrowed to spend on players.

Can't argue with the litigation - but even if you halved that, it'd not
make that big a difference.

Goodness me, common sense on the list!

The numbers seem to add up, given the constraints of having Bates in
charge. 50% of t/o on player wages, yet only 3% return. LUST proposes
upping
spending to 60% - which would push us into losses.

Not seeing any practical ways to improve things here. Interesting to note
that Southampton, Norwich etc have used Ridsdalenomics to get out of the
championship - 90-100% of t/o on wages. Such is the benefit of an owner
with
deep pockets - ie NOT Ken Bates.

Roll on next week.

I'd guess Warnock is looking to the emergency window, which will open once
the Prem clubs have submitted their 25-man squads and we'll see who's
available.

As I understand it, the takeover is still on, but negotiations are a bit
fraught.

Buyers want Ken to sign an indemnity against any future skeletons in
closets that might turn up. Ken refuses, telling the buyers (correctly IMO) to
use the due diligence process to go through the books properly. Hence
progress is slow.

Wrong on both counts.

Becchio's on a long contract, so he'd cost a large fee - £2-3m at least.

Beckford is on Prem wages - Leicester matched his Everton salary, as
they're well financed.

Fascinating stuff Rick - but this is the bit that bothers me.

saved us from), the vast bulk of the debt at that time was debt which did
not exist at the time that he took over from Krasner. The debt that KB shed

Quite where all that money was "spent" has never been explained or
understood. There is very little - if any- real connection with Ridsdale & the
Plc
and the Bates administration event.<<

Was there not some long-standing call on the club's finances (REFF?
"Bondholders"?) resulting from Ridsdale's folly that was still in the
background,
and could not be cleared unless the club went through administration - ie
the legal link between "oldclub" and "newclub" had to be severed?

So in effect Bates "manufactured" enough debt to cause an administration
event in order to rid the business of a much larger debt. Otherwise why
bother with administration at all?

Apropos Spain
A bit embarrassing & I'll get the piss taken but all he same quite
important

In my cloak and daggers game I am playing I am trying to replace the
present management from which I resigned with a much better management team.

So I met this guy who is a super Argentinian coach and tied in with some
Spanish team called Real something in the Spanish PL . He models his system
of coaching on some bloody Real team. I asked him three times to repeat the
fooking name . What with his bloody accent and the fact that I'd forgotten
the remote volume control on my hearing aid at home I didn't catch it.

Obviously it's not Madrid or Villa Real but I have to report about my
meeting and I feel a right twerp that I don't know what the name is. I am
hoping if I see he name I can sort of associate it or get near to it.

All help will be appreciated. Anyone know how many bloody Reals there are
in the Spanish first division. [Their community out reach is bloody
impressive. Maybe we can add one for the deaf in the near future!!] .

I fully appreciate the funny side of this.

So you'd rather have idiots like the ones that are shitting all over the
Cardiff fans? Destroying the club's history to sell shirts in Kuala Lumpur? Be
very careful what you wish for.

Re: [LU] New levels of indifference

2012-06-25 Thread MarkBursa
Agreed - but...if he'd been about 1/100th of a second later on contact with
that 90th minute overhead, he'd have scored the goal of the tournament and
been hailed a national hero.

Look at the slo-mo and he toe-ends it. But he was right on line - a
fraction later and it'd have come off his laces and hit the target - and
probably
would have beaten Buffon.

Just like Gazza in 96 v Germany, on such slender margins are our hopes
dashed.

certainly none of the commentators, dare address the issue..he
is just awful. He loses the ball almost every time he gets it.
