If I email the link, then it's going to get broken and you'll have a mess on

Hi listers,
I have a question on sourcing. I have an old insurance claim document
from my partners grand-dad and it gives a policy # and amount. There
are a couple of letters that go with it and an envelope and I think
it's an interesting piece of of matereal. Question is though is it
worth sourceing something like this. I'm trying really hard to come to
grips with this sourcing thing and it is slowly sinking in or I am
sinking in it one of the two!! Any help would be much apprieciated as
I've been asked is it worth the effort. I think any bit of material is
worth the effort big or small but now it's got me questioning the
relevance and effort of soucing somethng that has no real interest to
anyone but me, myself and I.

Thanks for any help

If it is interesting to you but only to you, why not put it in an

I agree with Susan but I make two changes.
1. I start each person with a special character "=" to group them

2. I have started putting the date at the beginning of the Detail

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-11 Thread John Carter
There can be a large difference between how the Census was *supposed* to
be taken and how each census taker actually *did* the field work ;-)

I'm only familiar with the US censuses, but I know that the census takers
did *not* always verify who *lived* in the house versus who was *in* the
house the day of the census. My wife has at least two ancestors who were
counted twice in pre-1900 censuses; in each case, the person was counted
once at home and once at a grandparent's house on a different day. My
maternal grandparents were counted twice in the 1920 Census - two census
takers covered part of the same block.

Unfortunately, having someone listed as a family member may or may not
mean that they lived in that house.

Tks to all who replied. I appreciate the help. One think though, I read an
article recently re Census in England that said that the Census information
for the address was the people who NORMALLY stay their. That could mean that
a person could be listed at that address on the night of the Census, but not
actually be there. I was initially under the impression that it was only
those in the house on the night, but that might not be so. Any thoughts or

I have a very similar situation. My great great grandmother's sister
crawled into a hole and took the hole with her...vanished into thin air.
In the course of trying to track her down, I located her death
certificate that had"her granddaughter" listed as the reporter of
informationwhich was very interesting since, although I had her
marriage recorded, I had no children...so this is what I did. For the
granddaughter I created a father for her called ...and I quote"Father
or Mother {[possible James Shearer descendant]]"(to keep me from
accidentally merging him...)and then married him off to a woman named
"Father or Mother."
To the couple Father or Mother and Father or Mother I add the name of
the granddaughter...If I ever find out which one is this girl's
parent and which of the two is a descendant, I can just change their
name..and if it's the woman, I can change parents really
easily...I'll have to get back to you on whether my aunt had a girl
or a boy...but at least her grandchild is documented.

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Richard,

Without further evidence, I wouldn't assume that the children weren't
real grandchildren. You appear to be indicating that you know all of
the head's children - but children aren't always home on census
night. My great grandfather and some of his siblings weren't home in
the 1841 census. He was only 8 at the time. If the Head is 60, his
eldest child is probably much older than 20. The wife could be a second wife.

To link known grandchildren, create a new child or children for the
head. I haven't been very consistent in what I call them. Sometimes
"Placeholder child", "unknown daughter", "unknown child", etc

Cheers,
Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing >1 photo from Photo Gallery in Report

2007-10-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Linda,

The only way to print multiple photos is to attach them to events.
This actually allows you to say more about the photo or the occasion
when the photo was taken.
eg: Attach your Dad's military photo to an event detailing his
military service.

I would attach the wedding photo and the older photo of your parents
to Marriage Events and keep those individual photo spots for photos
of individuals. I only put more than one person there if the only
photo I have of someone is a group photo and it is too difficult to
crop out just the one head shot.

I would like to print more than one photo from the photo gallery in

the photo gallery.

For example, for my parents, I have a wonderful military photo of my
dad, a wedding photo and a photo of my parents when they are older.

I can attach one photo to my dad and one photo to my mom. That
leaves one other photo. I understand that the photos attached for
the Marriage Information cannot be printed out on reports yet. I
read on the legacy website that this is planned in a future enhancement.

I also read a series of posts that said to create an event and
attach the photo there. Is there any other methods of getting the
3rd photo to print in a report?

I am sorry if this is a repeat of previous posts, but I want to make
sure I have not missed anything. I have scanned hundreds of photos,
named them and organized them in file folders by family group (HUGE
JOB). I have just begun attaching them and do not want to get too
far and then have to go back and fix/redo it.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or help in this matter.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Source: Person to Person

2007-10-11 Thread Susan Daily
I'm more of a lumper, but I make each individual person a source. Then
in the details, that might be an email, or telephone call, or personal
conversation, etc. I give the full description (i.e. "Telephone call
with Susan Daily on 4 Jul 2007; two pages of handwritten notes") in
the source detail. But since I am a lumper, I start each person's name
with "Person - " so that they all line up together.

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-11 Thread Richard Hallford
Thanks Mary. Re these "Grandchildren", I agree that they are part of the
family. In fact in later census (cenci?) the female granddaughter is still
with the famiy head, thirty years later. However, just taking the age of the
femal, 8yrs old and that the eldest of the "sibling" in the rest of the
family is 20, it is unlikely that the "granddaughter" belongs to any of the
Heads children. The head being 60, probably not him either. So the parents
had to be outside the family, possibly a brother or sisters child. Place of
birth is all exactly the same throughout the whole family, except for the
wife, although Im finding that census data for 1800's can be dodgy.
Enumerators may have just dittoed that one.
For those interested. I have found that on findmypast.com, you can search
the 1881 census for free, but more importantly, can search by address. So if
you know the address of someone in a Census, you can have a look at there
neighbors. I did that and low and behold, one of the grandchildren surnames
appeared a few doors down! Not conclusive evidence I know, but food for
thought.
However, I dont know what you meand by "create ghost children". How do you
do that? Probably just my inexperience with Legacy, but as I dont know the
grandparents, how do I enter them. Just as "Unknown grandparents"?
Kindest regards, Richard Hallford

[LegacyUG] Adoptions

2007-10-11 Thread TH
Sometimes the church that a child was baptised in isn't aware that the child
was ultimately adopted and, if you're lucky, might provide copies of the
baptismal certificate or record. That is what happened with regard to a new
found cousin that I was trying to assist. After her adopted mother passed
away, she had managed to get a hold of the adoption papers. With her
birthdate and mother's name (maiden), I was able to contact the local
Catholic church rectory. They were able to provide a copy of the baptismal
certificate as they had never been advised that the child had been adopted
out, even though the adoption had been handled through Catholic Charities in
a nearby city.

There is more to tell...including being there when two sisters met for the
first time in their 50s, but that would be considered off-topic to some on
this list ;-)

Interesting - you should be getting the correct URL with that build and
after resetting the search file and folder.

If I email the link, then it's going to get broken and you'll have a mess on
your hands. Please go to our website at

"Personal Conversation" or "Interviews" I believe are a TYPE of source, not
a source. The individual interview and/or your summation of it would be the
source, together with the date, time, place, and how the info was recorded
(taped,video,notes--at the time or when) and where the record is located

I have stories and information that is being relayed
to me via word of mouth by varying people in the
family.
My disclaimer is that I am doing family HISTORY, not
genealogy in it's pure form.

Anyway, how do you all cite this in Legacy? Do I make
one master source titled something like "Personal
Conversation" and link all instances to that, with
details being about who told me what for each
instance, or do I create master sources for each
person?
For instance I want to document stories my grandmother
told me before her passing, so my source is G Lockey.
I sat with my mother and got some stories from her,
and that source would be J Ratcliff.

The younger generations will actually write things
down for me, so that I have a source document, but the
older generations won't, they rely on telling the

Thanks for posting this Sherry. I have comcast and this is the first legacy
e-mail to come through today so i went on line and checked my screened mail
folder. Sure enough I found 5 legacy messages there. I have marked them as
non-spam and they did come through. Everyone on comcast may need to do that
and then Legacy should be OK.

Dave,

I tried responding to your email to Support this morning.

Comcast is bouncing our emails. I checked into this and it showed that we
weren't on their two spam blocker lists so I don't know why we're still
being bounced.

If you could check with Comcast about why LegacyFamilyTree.com is being
bounced, we'd appreciate it! They seem to like input from their customer
better than the senders!

The bounce message they're sending out is

Reason: 550 209.139.208.142 blocked by ldap:ou=rblmx,dc=comcast,dc=net ->

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Question...

2007-10-11 Thread Alice Hawrilenko
I list them as separate sources. As you have already noticed the information
from each source can vary. The purpose of sources is to verify the accuracy
of the information. For example. My g-grandfather Wm was a member of Liberty
Church so Liberty Church is entered in as a Master Source.
He is buried in Liberty Cemetery I learned this from an on-line source so I
list the source of the information as the on-line repository.
I then visited the cemetery and took pictures. I list myself as a primary
source and use that to catalogue the pictures.
If the pictures had come from the on-line site I would have used that as the
source for the pictures.
I have not yet used Liberty Church as a master source because to the best of
my knowledge no one has found the old records from that church if there are
any old records. But I keep the Church as a master source to indicate that I
have checked in there.

What do people do when they have several different repositories for the
same information. For example: I have Cemeteries & Churches list under one
master list (yes, I'm a lumper). But some of the cemetery information is
from on-line databases (with or without picture) & some is from me
personally visiting the cemetery. I have been using the detail to
differentiate, but is there a better way? What do other's do?

Some years ago I ordered a census film from the FHL. The names on the
page I needed were obliterated. On another occassion, I was at the
Sacramento State Library where I looked at the same film. The page I
needed was beautiful and clear. I not only record the repository, but
also the line number, household number, and film details.

Do you have the latest build of Legacy v6.0.0.155? Ancestry dumped their

I did a quick test and it looks like if you do the rename from the

[LegacyUG] Printing >1 photo from Photo Gallery in Report

2007-10-11 Thread linda kolinski
I have Legacy 6.0 Deluxe Edition.

I would like to print more than one photo from the photo gallery in a report.
It seems that only one photo can be tagged to print in the photo gallery.

For example, for my parents, I have a wonderful military photo of my dad, a
wedding photo and a photo of my parents when they are older.

I can attach one photo to my dad and one photo to my mom. That leaves one
other photo. I understand that the photos attached for the Marriage
Information cannot be printed out on reports yet. I read on the legacy website
that this is planned in a future enhancement.

I also read a series of posts that said to create an event and attach the
photo there. Is there any other methods of getting the 3rd photo to print in
a report?

I am sorry if this is a repeat of previous posts, but I want to make sure I
have not missed anything. I have scanned hundreds of photos, named them and
organized them in file folders by family group (HUGE JOB). I have just begun
attaching them and do not want to get too far and then have to go back and
fix/redo it.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or help in this matter.
  Linda

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Source: Person to Person

2007-10-11 Thread Bruce Jones
I am a lumper, so I started with just one source "Personal
Communication" for all emails and phone calls that provided me with
information. However as I go more and more of these (several hundred
from over 75 persons), I decided to create a Master Source for each
individual. In addition to not having one source with so many
Detailed Source entries, I like the way it reads now. However, making
this change entailed quite a bit of work.

Based on my experience, I would recommend you create at least a
separate Master Source for each individual even if you are a lumper.
If you later decide you want them combined, Legacy provides the tool
to do this (it would be VERY easy to do if you put the persons name in
the Source Detail when you create each Detail Source entry so you
don't have to add it before combining).

My two cents worth.

RE: [LegacyUG] Citing Source: Person to Person

2007-10-11 Thread Janis Gilmore
Well, as a splitter I source each individual source of information.

For instance:
Informal conversations with Elizabeth (Bennett) Welker (Mountain
View, Missouri), from 1965 to the present (2007); regarding the Welker and
Bennett families of Some County, Somewhere.

For the filing title I would use "Bennett, Elizabeth - (Welker)" because the
maiden name is the primary name by which I think of her, and the primary
name used for her genealogically.

In the source detail, I would put the individual story, and maybe the
circumstances surrounding the telling of it, and possibly even a more
specific date. I do the same thing with info from my parents, grandparents,
whomever.

If it was a formal interview with someone (as in, I called to ask them if I
could ask them some questions about the family, and had a list prepared), I
would do it more like this:

Interview, Elizabeth (Bennett) Welker (Mountain View, Missouri), 12
Dec 2005; regarding the Bennett and Welker families.

Then on the text page I would transcribe all of the notes.

Janis

Re: [LegacyUG] Renaming Pictures

2007-10-11 Thread John Magyari

Looks like each and every file has to be done individually.

I also noticed each time I select to manually find (Browse for the file
yourself) the 30 files I am sent to the
Default location of family files, instead of Default location of
picture, sound, video files Picture Files which is the directory I would
have thought I would have started in.
It would have been nice if whatever I last changed would have been
remembered including the last file name selected considering I am going
to change the same file 30 times. I have to do 7 clicks each time, only
210 clicks and I got through the whole process.

I have several Census files that I'd like to rename associated with many
individuals, unfortunately my naming convents were not thought out when
I first started, maybe I'll wait until Version 7 comes out and see if
there is possibly a Master List associated with pictures.
If there was a crc was associated with each of the images, then if files
were renamed the first attempt in location could be to associate old

You can redirect Legacy to a file with a changed name this way:

Rename the file. Then go to Options, Customise, Locations and click
on Test All Multimedia Paths...

When the program discovers it can't file the picture by the old
filename you will be offered several options, including Browse for the
File Yourself. Click on this and browse for the file with the new
filename and select it and click Open.

Legacy will then ask you if you want to use this new filename and you
click yes.

I don't know if Legacy will then automatically associate that new
filename with *all* instances of the old one or not. If it doesn't,
you will find the correct folder opens each time you click Browse for
the File Yourself so it is very quick to find renamed file.

RE: [LegacyUG] Citing Source: Person to Person

2007-10-11 Thread familyjesse
I have both oral and written family histories, stories and such from various
sides of the family that are extremely different in background and origins.
I have used these sources for this:

First hand Information . that would be me or members of my family
who were there, involved etc.

Family Records historical records which I actually contain
in my hand but which could not be classified under another source: census,
baptismal records

Family Information, handed down . mostly word of mouth, some old
notes etc...

Since I am a lumper, I keep my sources general and use the event detail tab
to explain.

Under details for the event I would add who the source was, where it came
from, dates, various information that I might have. In some cases I would
actually copy text and put it in the detail text and then add my comments. I
frequently use the comments section to explain how witnesses are related to
the family, who else attended and my own comments.

The younger generations will actually write things
down for me, so that I have a source document, but the
older generations won't, they rely on telling the
stories.

Thoughts?

I have a master source named Family Members & Personal Knowledge and I
will then use the Source Details to add something like "Joe Bloggs -
Oral" or "Jenny M Benson - Recollection". You might also want to
include the date when the information was given to you, if you know it.

Incidentally, I would actually use the full name and RIN of the person
quoted in the Source Details so that anyone else looking at my Sources
would understand exactly who was being quoted.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Source: Person to Person

2007-10-11 Thread John Carter
I think this may be a "lumper" versus "splitter" topic ;-)

You could either lump all stories under a source of "
Conversation" or split them out by " Conversation ".
If the source is a living person, you might want the date/place if you
need clarification or details of a specific conversation. "Do you
remember of you told me at
on ?" is more likely to connect to the specific
conversation than "Do you remember of ?"

However, the second form might get you another because it's
entirely possible that there are multiple stories about "Grandpa and the
mule".

I have some things from conversations that are not in the Master Source,
but in individual notes with the citation and it's all in [[private]].

Re: [LegacyUG] Renaming Pictures

2007-10-11 Thread Ron Taylor

Jenny,

You could use a master source and have the picture attached to it. Then
cite that source on all people involved. If the picture name changes, you
only need to fix the master source.

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

2007-10-11 Thread Mary Young
Hi, Richard
I feel these grandchildren are part of the family and must be linked.
Create two "ghost" children for the grandparents. Mark them as
"unknown gender" and attach a grandchild to each. When you have more
info. you can put name and gender to the ghosts, or merge with known
children.
It's worth remembering that (depending on society/country/timeframe),
the grandson with a different surname may be a daughter's illegitimate
child, using his father's name. For instance, this was commonly done
in 19th century Scotland.

I have several such situations. I create an Unknown given name under the
Surname, with an explanation in the Notes, then create the Grandson or
Granddaughter, again with an explanation in the Notes.
At some point you will (hopefully) figure out the relationship. Then it
is a simple process to either a) convert "Unknown" to the name of a newly
discovered child, or b) move the Grandson/Granddaughter to their correct
parent
and then delete the Unknown.
