RE: [LegacyUG] English counties

Heather,

Please clarify. I do hope you are not suggesting that Legacy should
produce/include every change in a location throughout time and the world. I
suspect that I might need a mainframe!

RE: [LegacyUG] Drag and drop - Legacy 7

2008-06-26 Thread ronald ferguson

Beth,

The answer to this is a sort of "No"! Is the person a new partner? If so they
will not show until linked. Clicking on the name of the person in the Index
will then show the person in Family View and you need to link.

If the circustances are different please explain exactly the relationship (if
any) between the import and the original.

Art,

In your email program there should be a "plain text" setting somewhere. In msn
eg. its below the subject bar in Outlook Express in the Formay Tab at the top

24 Jun 2008 I posted a leaflet "Walking Tour of Nyssa, Oregon"
The source detail was building 5.
I did not use the SourceWriter.
I posted this to one person, George.

25 Jun 2008 I posted a Certificate of Baptism
Nothing was entered in the source detail.
I used the SourceWriter.
I posted this to three people, Ernest, Ernesta & Irene.

To my horror the source detail for "Walking Tour of Nyssa, Oregon" also
appears for the three people I posted the Certificate of Baptism to.

I will have to go back & check every source entry since receiving version
7.

I would appreciate thoughts on what I am doing wrong.

Thank you,
Ann

Re: [LegacyUG] English counties - Starting a new thread

2008-06-26 Thread Mike Fry

Kris Strotman wrote:

I'm afraid I'm guilty of doing this. PLEASE tell us
how to start a new thread!! I have looked several times
but can't figure it out. (I've only posted twice, but
had to piggyback off someone else's message to do it.)

It all rather depends on what piece of software you're using to read and
write your mail. Me, I use Thunderbird which downloads my mail from my
ISP. I see a lot of people are using web-based mail readers, probably at
Google, Yahoo! and others including their own ISP offerings. My ISP also
offers a web-based mail service that runs within my browser (Firefox).

On my Thunderbird toolbar (and in the menus) I have two (three in
reality but we'll forget about the 3rd one for now) options for writing
emails: one, labelled 'Write' and a second labelled 'Reply'. The use of
these should be fairly obvious :-) 'Write' means write a *new* message,
whilst 'Reply' means reply to the message that I'm currently reading.

I don't have an account with Yahoo!, so can't comment on what they
provide in the way of web-based mail. But, I do have a Google account
and have used their web-based mail system - before I found out how to
read the mail with Thunderbird.

To the best of my knowledge, in the top left corner of the Google mail
screen (under the Google logo) is a 'Compose' button. This starts a new
mail message that is unrelated to anything you might have been reading.
When you read a message on Google mail, it appears in a form of its' own
and in the top-right corner of that form is a button labelled 'Reply'.
That should continue the thread that you're currently reading.

By the way, Google provides a way whereby I can use Thunderbird to read
mail sent to my gmail.com address. It's simply a POP gateway along with
necessary information to configure Thunderbird. I'm pretty certain even
though I've never used Yahoo! or Hotmail, that they must offer something
similar. In this way, all my mail comes into Thunderbird from every
email address that I have.

Feel free to write to me off-list if you need help with setting your
email reader up and using it.

I don't usually bother with street addresses, but for Birth, Marriage,
Death, Baptism, Burial, I also enter the name of the

address on a report, it shows up following the event as "Address:
Riverside Cemetery."  The "Address:" lead-in annoys me, but I'll live
with it.

It doesn't appear that way on all reports - only the "boxed" ones like
Individual. On the others you just get the address in brackets and if
you enter the address with privacy brackets round the "location" parts
you don't get repetition.

I'm quite happy with that. It's like saying to someone "I was born in
Birkenhead - 18 Devonshire Place to be precise.)

What I saw in my family file was that it only seemed as if these details were

supposed to work?

If you are dragging someone who is husband to a woman already in your
file, are you expecting him to drop into the correct husband position?
He won't do that because Legacy doesn't know that he is that woman's
husband, until you tell it so.

When you have done the drag and drop, click in the empty "name" area of
the husband's side of the screen and then click "Link to an existing
person." Now find the newly imported man in the Name List and click on
"Select" and he will then drop into the place where you want him.

Ron,

Thanks. The person is a new individual and the relationship was father

the link.

Beth,

The answer to this is a sort of "No"! Is the person a new partner? If so they
will not show until linked. Clicking on the name of the person in the Index will then
show the person in Family View and you need to link.

If the circustances are different please explain exactly the relationship (if
any) between the import and the original.

be in. However the box is still empty. He is however now in the index of

Hi Jenny,

Thanks, I was expecting Legacy to know that the new person was the
father of an existing person; otherwise why would I drag and drop him to
that box? I will establish the link or check and see if I have
another program that automatically establishes the link.

If you are dragging someone who is husband to a woman already in your
file, are you expecting him to drop into the correct husband position?
He won't do that because Legacy doesn't know that he is that woman's
husband, until you tell it so.

When you have done the drag and drop, click in the empty "name" area
of the husband's side of the screen and then click "Link to an
existing person." Now find the newly imported man in the Name List
and click on "Select" and he will then drop into the place where you
want him.

Re: [LegacyUG] definition of [[ in help files

2008-06-26 Thread Dermot McGlone
Jeff,

Under Private, Notes in the (V7) Help system, I found the following:

Private Notes

Legacy has the ability to mark portions of your notes as Private. When
you are editing notes you can add two opening brackets [[to start the
marking of private notes that you do not want to be printed, or
exported. At the end of the private notes you add two closing
brackets]] and everything following the closing brackets becomes
public notes again. You can also just use the two opening brackets [[
and everything to the end of the note becomes private if there are no
closing brackets. Legacy options to print and export private notes. By
default, Legacy always turns off private notes and you will have to
turn them back on each time you export or print a report. This
feature is part of all note fields including general notes, medical
notes, research notes, marriage notes, event notes, picture notes,
source description, and comments.

Dermot.

[LegacyUG] V7 Source detail for prior document posted is also on the one posted next.

2008-06-26 Thread Ann Parsons
Thank you Connie, Tom, Ron, Kiersten, Dave & Evert for taking the time to
give me your thoughts. I appreciate it.

Clearing the clipboard is a good idea. I tried this, there was nothing on
the clipboard.

I turned off the computer last evening. This morning I see that the detail
is still there, yet when I click on edit detail there is nothing to delete.

I did a preview of individual report. It seems ok, I don't see the detail
Building 5 from "Walking Tour of Nyssa" in the preview.

This morning in the Assigned Sources screen I clicked on edit detail added
two periods [..]saved and the two periods were in the detail column,
Building 5 is gone. I again went to edit detail, deleted the two periods and
saved.

TA DA! the detail column is now blank. I think I will delay using the
SourceWriter until Dave gets this problem fixed. What a great outfit

Does this source detail still show if you clear the source clipboard? I seem
to remember there was a problem with the source clipboard (is fixed in beta
now).
What I saw in my family file was that it only seemed as if these details
were attached (they changed if I copied another source to the clipboard and
they didn't print in reports). So I think you better wait for the next build
before you start checking all your source details.
To check this you just have to clear the source clipboard and see if the
wrong details have gone.

[LegacyUG] Pruning a branch from the tree (permanently)

2008-06-26 Thread Jim Temple
Hello All,

I have a family file that has a family branch that I want to remove: to
include all references in the name index.

When I delete the individual at the start of the branch I want removed, the
individual is removed. However, his ancestors remain in the name index. To
remove the individual and ALL his ancestors does not seem possible without
removing each branch individual individually.

I have researched and searched the archives and I can't find a method to
remove the branch in one fell chop.

Is there a way to point to an individual and command the program to remove
him and all of his branch in one procedure??

Thanks for any help the group can give this new user.

Sincerely,

Jim Temple

Re: [LegacyUG] Dealing with unknown names

2008-06-26 Thread Mary Fowler Leek

This is what I now enter for my unknowns (_). Please see example at
end of message. It will lose a bit of formatting because of sending this
message
as plain text but you can get the idea.

I used to enter just a __ but noticed, with Legacy 7, my entered
underlines don't carry into the reports like they did in v6, so I've begun
using the ( ) . In Legacy 7, it just prints out as ( ), but
with the ( ), it still serves my purpose. I don't care to print underlines
for all missing information, just the names. I am always surprised at how
the blank area draws the eye of the reader and seems to encourage them to
want to 'help' by offering the name, if known.

It's nice Legacy allows us to use different options.

I joined this thread late so please forgive me as I try to understand.
Entering cemeteries has been a dilmma for me too.

Are you saying that in the individual information screen's field for "in"
(as in "buried in") you enter "Oakwood Memorial Cemetery Chatsworth, Los
Angeles, California"?

I thought that Legacy recommends entering "Chatsworth, Los Angeles,
California" in that field and then entering "Oakwood Memorial Cemetery" in
the filed "burial address" in the screen that opens up when you click on
"+".

I personally prefer your method which I do use even though it does add many
cemetery and similar non-town names to the master location list. I find the
burial address screen somewhat redundent or overkill.

RE: [LegacyUG] Obits?

2008-06-26 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Michele,

You have selected the correct template, as the actual source you are
consulting is the newspaper. Most obits make no reference of the author, so
yes, just leave the author fields blank. The templates are flexible enough
that you can leave a field blank if you wish, and the formatting should
usually still work out fine.

Not knowing how the "branch" of your tree are related to each other, I

Jeff,

If you create, for example, an ancestor book report (Reports>All
reports (Books and others)...>Ancestors), on the "Options" tab, you
can choose to Insert Underlines for Missing "Given and Surnames",
"Dates and places" and "Death information for individuals marked as

These options are probably most often used when creating a report for

Re: [LegacyUG] Very Basic Questions

2008-06-26 Thread Thomas Herson
The location (including burial) field is intended for city/town/village,
county, state, country.

The address field is used to identify more specific locations within a
location, such as names of cemeteries, hospitals, etc.

Placing address items within the location field (with or without a comma)
greatly increases the number of locations that the program has to keep track
of.

[LegacyUG] Personal E-mail Master Source Template (lumping vs. splitting)

2008-06-26 Thread Gail Nestor
Hi Geoff, I agree with others that it would be nice to have the option
to enter the sender, recipient, and subject matter information within
the source detail rather than in the master source. I would much
rather lump all e-mails under a single master source like "Nestor
Research Files" rather than having a separate source for each note I
receive.

I realize that I can type the details into the Text/Comments field of
the Source Detail screen to sort of get around this, but then I lose
the order of the components. Maybe we could provide a button on the
master source screen that would allow the user to access the same
template at the source detail level instead of the master source
level.

Also, I noticed there is an extra comma right after e-address as
follows: (E-ADDRESS), & STREET ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE,] in the
output. I'm going to wait on converting these sources for now. It
sounds like others would find this useful as well.

Yes! I like to see where people were buried on the individual info screen, and
this is a trade off from going into the burial address screen. This will give

[LegacyUG] Gedstar Pro 3.2 and Legacy 7 -- problems with conversion

2008-06-26 Thread Kathy Wallace
Any Gedstar Pro users who have upgraded to Legacy 7? To complicate matters
I also changed computers and the new one is running Vista.

Legacy 7 is running fine so far on Vista. I moved my Palm Pilot application
over to the new machine and have updated my Legacy file a lot lately so
decided to put Gedstar Pro on. I'd bought Gedstar 3.1 and had used that
successfully with Legacy 6 on Windows XP. When I went to download the
software I found that version 3.2 is available so downloaded that. It
installed ok - on computer and Palm Pilot. I exported my data file to a
gedcom file and proceeded to convert the file to Gedstar Pro format. I got
an error message:

Line found in Gedcom without a level #

File TCGedparse.cpp line 183.

I've messaged the software vendor but haven't had a response. I don't know
if the problem is with my data file, the Gedstar software or if it is some
Vista incompatibility. I can say that I seem to have been able to export
the same gedcom file to my old computer - still running Legacy 6. I really
miss not having my data file on my Palm Pilot - and it has just been 24 hrs.
Suggestions appreciated.

Kathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Pruning a branch from the tree (permanently)

2008-06-26 Thread Jim Temple
Hey Everyone,

I found the "advanced" instructions for tagging and deleting. Everything
came out just like I wanted.

Hope this message gets to the list before any replies noting the above.

Thanks. Jim.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Pruning a branch from the tree (permanently)

Sincerely,

Jim Temple

Re: [LegacyUG] Very Basic Questions

2008-06-26 Thread G Oliver
For cemetery/burial addresses I use the address (+) fields. That way I can
have a complete address with zip code along with GPS coordinates in the 2nd
address field. If I have a headstone picture I create a cemetery event/fact
and move the information to the event address fields (+).
If you do not use an event/fact the headstone picture will not print on
reports. Also the GPS coordinates will not print unless you add them to an
address. It is also easy to list those people located in that cemetery.

Just the way I do it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Very Basic Questions

2008-06-26 Thread music-line
Hi Everyone,

We had a similar discussion to this a few weeks back so it just might be
worth looking it up - especially but not exclusively for the U.K. users. It
was called "How do people record addresses in an 'event'" and is about 8
pages back in the archive. I now write all my addresses in the location
field, in full. It means that it's possible to use the mapping feature more
accurately and when you go to the family view or the Individual's
Information Events/Facts list, you can see the exact location at a glance in
the Desc/Place/Notes column without having to open each event up and go to
the address list. I now reserve the address list for current/ up-to-date
addresses of people I might possibly want to write to or contact. Whether
it is an 'event location' or a 'Born, Chr, Died, Buried etc' location I
still record addresses in the same consistent way. I think everyone will
have their own slightly different system but it might be worth taking a look
at the archived posts mentioned above.

Best wishes

David

[LegacyUG] Locations

2008-06-26 Thread s2f
Seems as though each time I review a section of the videos, I wind up having to
correct hundreds of records to bring my files into some semblance of
standardization. I just ran the 'USA County Verification' and have 27 pages of
discrepancies!! The bulk of them have to do with USA county's that were not in
existence at the time the event data was used - some of this data from
well-recognized genealogist's research. I know that Geoff indicates that an
'animap' program is available for about $80 that would provide this
information, but this is beginning to become a 'Barbie' package. :-) - you know
where there is no end of stuff to buy for her.

I even went to the US Geological Service (USGS) but their data is so
convoluted and condensedthat it is almost unuseable for my purposes.

I know I could go to the next higher level in the 'location' format but that
removes some good information. i.e., instead of ',Unicoi, Tennessee, USA', I
could go with ',,Tennessee, USA', but I would like to pinpoint the location at
the time of the event. Right now, I am changing county's that I know about,
but are there any alternative suggestions out there?

Bob

RE: [LegacyUG] Pruning a branch from the tree (permanently)

2008-06-26 Thread ronald ferguson

Jim,

Probably - but with extreme care; so *back up*! If you are unsure as to what
you are doing then create a duplicate file and use that for practice.

Make sure that no one else is connected to the individuals who you wish to
keep. Since you have deleted the individual then you cannot use him as the
starting point to remove his ancestors, if his father and mother can be used
then in Family View right click on the tabs and you will enter advanced
tagging. Select an empty tag and Ancestors only; select from the next screen
"Entire Family Line" otherwise select the top option and click OK. If the top
option was chosen then repeat for the mother using the same tag number. Now use
Tools>Advanced Deletion and delete everybody with that tag.

If the parents are not suitable then you will have to use a similar method to
select and tag the descendants of the eldest ancestors from in the individual's
line.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dealing with unknown names

2008-06-26 Thread Elizabeth Cunningham
I am currently using the form "(Brandt), Pearl" for last names or
"Gartley, Unknown" for first names. I tried using [] but the name
disappeared. I have may be 50 or more names where I have no last name
and another 20 where I have no first name. Attaching the married last
name in parentheses at least helps me keep track of where they belong.
Otherwise I would have at least 5 "--?--, Elizabeth"'s. Our family has
a tendency to repeat names. If there is a practice that would work
better for me I would be glad to hear it.

Elizabeth C

La Nell Shores wrote:

"Unknown" names. If we all would submit a "suggest a new feature" to

standardization warnings individually, maybe they would hear us and fix it
to our liking.

I just submitted one. The rest is up to you. I use [--?--] and intend to
continue using that form. It's a personal choice and it seems to be a
standard form in genealogy.

Reasoning: If Aunt So-and-so married James, and I leave it blank, how do I
know if it is James SOMEBODY or Somebody JAMES? Many of our names could be
used as a first name or a surname, and we need some way of indicating which
it is.

I know it messes up the report that inserts underlines for missing data,
however it definitely looks better in regular descendant or ancestor reports
to have some way of indicating which name is missing and I use those reports
many times over more frequently than the insert underlines for missing data
report.

Just my thoughts on this subject.

In Outlook Express there is an setting (Options/Send) to reply to a message

Yep, Ron I know, but I send more HTML than I do plain text, so it's
simpler to just verify format on e:mail lists. My error was thinking
having the e:mail address checked plain text would overrule the
reply to sender's original format.

In the 'Individual's Information' screen click on 'Exclude from Potential

 Is this what you mean?

[LegacyUG] Mapping addresses

2008-06-26 Thread Keith Bage
I have a question about mapping locations in relation to addresses.

I manage my locations with 4 place holders

e.g. Brenham, Washington County, Texas, USA

I also use the addresses such as burial addresses

Now let's say for a persons birth I enter as the location Brenham,
Washington County, Texas, USA

I also use this location for the burial. However I add a burial address of
Priarie Lea Cemetery in the burial address.

The problem is that I can only map both instances at one location i.e. the
town centre of Brenham. But I would have liked to have a push pin in place
for the cemetery too. How do I manage to do that without creating other
location with a different structure than my 4 place holders?

Re: [LegacyUG] English counties

2008-06-26 Thread Heather Stovold
No Ron, I am not suggesting that. The information would be filled in
by the user. Basically, I get tired of always having to think when I
enter a place on what it was called at the time. I use the smae
locations a lot, but I always have to sit and think - especially if
I've been working in another area for a while. (example of my
thoughts ok - this is in Medicine Hat, Alberta - but wait, it
wasn't Alberta until 1905, before that it was NWT oh - this birth
was IN 1905 - was that before or after it became a province - I better
go check online (or in my chronology screen, if I have it in a
timeline)). Sure - I would need to do the research the first time -
but if I put it all in for the locations I use, then I wouldn't have
to check, and check, and check...For Ontario, I am doing a lot of
stuff in around the years that it kept changing, and I can NEVER
remember (was it Upper Canada first, or Canada West first) - I just
get sick of always having to look it up.

So - just the short answer - I'd expect the users to be putting in the
information as it comes up - but the program can check, if you have
indicated that a physical location had more than one name at various
dates

I joined this thread late so please forgive me as I try to
understand.
Entering cemeteries has been a dilmma for me too.

Are you saying that in the individual information
screen's field for "in"
(as in "buried in") you enter "Oakwood
Memorial Cemetery Chatsworth, Los
Angeles, California"?

Yes! I like to see where people were buried on the individual info
screen, and this is a trade off from going into the burial address
screen. This will give me a few more locations in the master location
list, and this has not caused any problems with reports so far as I
know.

[LegacyUG] Master Location Mess

2008-06-26 Thread Juli Kearns

As simply as I can state it, here's an example of my problem.

The way things are...

Kansas, Chautauqua County, Chautauqua, other, USA
city, county, state, other, country

Of course I want...

USA, Kansas, Chautauqua County, Chautauqua, other
country, state, county, city, other

How this happened was I began doing this way way way back when I didn't
have an option for a pre-defined country, state, county, city order yet
this was the easiest way for me to examine populations.

I was hoping to do a fix for this by switching everything to generic
order, thinking that might wipe out the currently applied USA terms,
then applying appropriate pre-defined USA sorts to the generic
terms--but I see that doesn't do it?

Is there anything I can do other than re-entering everything...which
would be at this point a rather formidable task? Or do I live with it.

Thanks.

Juli

Feb 30th was a real date in a couple of coutries at a couple of
specific times.. there is a chance it was one of those

Probably in Legacy (to make this on topic) you would have to turn off
the date check on these instances, and make good notes for people.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dealing with unknown names

2008-06-26 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Ron, It's in the Descendant Narrative Book Report where the lines no longer
show or print. I'm talking about lines I've actually typed into the name field
in Legacy, like this . not the option we can tick in Legacy to
include lines for missing info in the reports.

Ironically, it appears they do show up and print in the Descendant Book report?
This doesn't make much sense. My favorite report is the Descendant Narrative
Book report and the one I use all the time.

Well, double checked to be certain I was using the exact same font and
discovered one was a different font face. Changing to the identical font face
used in Descendant Report fixed things. Now I'm getting my typed underline in
both reports in both report styles. Yea

Now, if I can just figure out another little oddity in report formatting, I'll
be good to go.

Thanks so much for letting me know you weren't able to duplicate. I had
switched back and forth, trying to figure out if anything was different and had
convinced myself I was using the same settings everywhere. So happy to have
this cleared up.

With all the questions about this and that, and queries about problems in
Version 3 (to be expected with any new version), I thought it necessary to
balance things out by sending an email commending Millennium for the truly
fantastic program they created in Legacy.

It is really phenomenal in its vast capabilities and yet ease of use. Far
better than anything else available to genealogists. Even though I have
used it since I discovered it at version 6, I remain amazed with all that
the new Legacy 7 offers. Of course there are a few quirks here and
there - as with any new software version - but here we Legacy users
benefit from still another advantage: the support is as excellent as the
software itself and the support staff is extremely responsive and reply in
a timely manner despite being overwhelmed with all the queries after the
new version's appearance. Example: I recently reported a bug in Legacy
Charting and was contacted by the author of Legacy Charting who
immediately located the bug, explained what caused it, and corrected it -
in just 24 hours!

Kudos to all involved. And, if anyone is wondering, I am in no way
associated with Millennium or Legacy. Just a pleasantly satisfied
customer. Thank you Millennium. Good job.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pruning a branch from the tree (permanently)

2008-06-26 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
You might want to make a DUPLICATE/TEST of your file, then tag that
individual and all related, and then delete the UNTAGGED ones. That way
what will be left is the folks you actually want to delete. You can look
them over to see for sure who will be purged and make sure you didn't want
any of them.

Once you are sure you are OK, again make a duplicate of your ORIGINAL file,
then tag that individual and all related, and this time delete the TAGGED
folks. If you are still happy with it, then you can either make this your
working file, or do the same to your working file.

**Make sure you've always used a tag slot that isn't in use first!**

Jim,

Probably - but with extreme care; so *back up*! If you are unsure as to
what you are doing then create a duplicate file and use that for practice.

Make sure that no one else is connected to the individuals who you wish to
keep. Since you have deleted the individual then you cannot use him as the
starting point to remove his ancestors, if his father and mother can be
used then in Family View right click on the tabs and you will enter
advanced tagging. Select an empty tag and Ancestors only; select from the
next screen "Entire Family Line" otherwise select the top option and click
OK. If the top option was chosen then repeat for the mother using the same
tag number. Now use Tools>Advanced Deletion and delete everybody with that
tag.

If the parents are not suitable then you will have to use a similar method
to select and tag the descendants of the eldest ancestors from in the
individual's line.

Hello All,

I have a family file that has a family branch that I want to remove: to
include all references in the name index.

When I delete the individual at the start of the branch I want removed,
the
individual is removed. However, his ancestors remain in the name index.
To
remove the individual and ALL his ancestors does not seem possible
without

removing each branch individual individually.

I have researched and searched the archives and I can't find a method to
remove the branch in one fell chop.

Is there a way to point to an individual and command the program to
remove

him and all of his branch in one procedure??

Thanks for any help the group can give this new user.

Sincerely,

Jim Temple

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing LONG!! url's

2008-06-26 Thread Don Cook
Keith,

I for one have long ago abandoned any attempt to use URL's of this nature in
citations. You have pointed to one problem and the other is that with the
nature of URL's and web-design and re-design and re-design and ... the URL by
its very nature has little or no permanence to it.

>From what I can see you are looking at an obituary on Ancestry.com referencing
>a Bage. To me, the citation would require that you acknowledge that it was
>from Ancestry.com and the search parameters that will allow others to locate
>it, such as the name, where published originally, date published, etc. These
>items should be taken from the item viewed not the ones you used for the
>search, it can be different.

Many of these issues are being foisted off on us because E. S. Mills says this
is the way it should be and we all are jumping on it. Let's hope she doesn't
write a new book or we'll all be converting again.

I expect this reply to evoke a storm of protest ... so be it!

I do not think that is adequate. You may want to know about other
standardization problems, just exempt Legacy considering [--?--] to be one of
the "problems". Doing what you suggest means that that individual may be
excluded from Legacy finding any other standardization problems.

Just my 2 cents.

www.ancestry.com only gets you to Ancestry's home page.

What is your objection to using the longer URL?

Tom,

There is absolutely nothing which says that this *has* to be the case. This
limitation is only suggested because American Geo-locations use that format.
Legacy is international.

I put the full address in the Location Field and only use the Address Fields
for current names and addresses etc.

correct hundreds of records to bring my files into some semblance of
standardization. I just ran the 'USA County Verification' and have 27 pages of
discrepancies!! The bulk of them have to do with USA county's that were not in

well-recognized genealogist's research. I know that Geoff indicates that an
'animap' program is available for about $80 that would provide this
information, but this is beginning to become a 'Barbie' package. :-) - you know

The location (including burial) field is intended for city/town/village,
county, state, country.

The address field is used to identify more specific locations within a
location, such as names of cemeteries, hospitals, etc.

Placing address items within the location field (with or without a comma)
greatly increases the number of locations that the program has to keep track
of.

Re: [LegacyUG] Locations

I don't know about alternatives. I bought Animap in
1999 and upgrades when needed. IMHO, you cannot do USA
locations, using the name at date of document, without
a lot of extra busy work. I have also used the data
from there to enhance my Chronology Timelines.

Re: [LegacyUG] Very Basic Questions

2008-06-26 Thread Elizabeth Cunningham
I had never actually run a Location Report, so I did, all 66 pages of
it. There are 146 Philadelphia Locations in it that are street
addresses. Is this a high or low number of pages for this report? My
ancestors seem to have moved around a bit, and this particular crowd
mostly only arrived in the 1880's or 1890's. The group that has been
here longer all lived out in the country.

I must have at least 60 different street addresses for Philadelphia
(15 of them for one grandfather!) so I always put the street address
in before the city, county, state and country. I'll bet anyone with
relatives in big cities has the same problem. And I add the cemetery
name too, if necessary (or in one case of mine, the Philadelphia

[LegacyUG] Question about sourcing books

2008-06-26 Thread Chuck Arbogast
Hello,
I have just recently received a book on CD that has my family
history. I have a few questions about how to source this book on CD.
Actually there are 5 CD's, one for each volume. This is a pdf version
of the original hardback version. So, I chose, "Book, authored
(reprint)", then "Two authors", then "CD/DVD book (text)". I believe
this is the correct source path. I have multiple questions about this
source and source output.

Here is the Footnote/Endnote Citation:
Charles Joseph Eades and Frances (Yeager) Dunham Ph. D., Descendants
of Michael Arbogast (ca. 1734-1812), 5 Volumes , IV: 578 (2880);
(N.p.: n.p., n.d.).

My questions:
Is this the correct way to source this book on CD?

What if there are more than two authors?

Each volume is on a separate CD containing one pdf file. The page
number is 578 in the pdf file but at the bottom of the text is the
page number and it has 2880, hence why I put 578 (2880). Is this
correct way of doing it? Volume III pdf last page in the text says
2304 and the first page in the Volume IV pdf text has 2305. So, each
pdf has page numbers in the text that don't correspond with the actual
page number in the pdf. My guess is on the original hard back volumes
the page that I want to source would be 2880, so I was a little
confused which one to use. Any help would be appreciated.

And last but not least, what does "(N.p.: n.p., n.d.)" mean at the
very end of that source?

Again, any answers or opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Chuck Arbogast

Yes! I like to see where people were buried on the
individual info screen, and this is a trade off from going
into the burial address screen. This will give me a few
more locations in the master location list, but this is not a problem. This
saves a lot of key strokes and time. by leaving off the comma between cemetery
and ciy it keeps the city, county, state consistent.

I really haven't entered any new names for a long time and I entered all the
burial addresses and GPS locations as was suggested a long time ago, so I
really have the place of burial entered twice. Now I don't have to go looking
for it.

As far as entering the country is concerned, if they were born in the USA I
leave it off. If it is out of the USA I entered the country.

It works for me!

Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping addresses

2008-06-26 Thread Leon Chapman
Keith:

I use the following so I can map 2 locations:

1. Brenham, Washington County, Texas, USA -- Death location

2. Brenham - Priarie Lea Cemetery, Washington County, Texas, USA -
Buriel location

This way, you can use the push-pin for the cemetery location.

Yes, it creates two locations, but they are different.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dealing with unknown names

2008-06-26 Thread JLB
In theory, I like the best the option of putting [[ ]] to indicate the
married surname for women, except the surname does not line up
alphabetically under others of that surname. It goes after the people
with no surnames. So I don't know how useful it is. This topic went
back and forth a couple of weeks ago and various suggestions were offered.

name and another 20 where I have no first name. Attaching the married
last name in parentheses at least helps me keep track of where they
belong. Otherwise I would have at least 5 "--?--, Elizabeth"'s. Our
family has a tendency to repeat names. If there is a practice that
would work better for me I would be glad to hear it.

I just submitted one. The rest is up to you. I use [--?--] and
intend to

continue using that form. It's a personal choice and it seems to be a
standard form in genealogy.
Reasoning: If Aunt So-and-so married James, and I leave it blank,
how do I
know if it is James SOMEBODY or Somebody JAMES? Many of our names
could be
used as a first name or a surname, and we need some way of indicating
which

it is.
I know it messes up the report that inserts underlines for missing data,
however it definitely looks better in regular descendant or ancestor
reports
to have some way of indicating which name is missing and I use those
reports
many times over more frequently than the insert underlines for
missing data

report.

Just my thoughts on this subject.

No protest. What you've said is basically what Ms. Mills says too.

Keith,

I for one have long ago abandoned any attempt to use URL's of this nature in
citations. You have pointed to one problem and the other is that with the
nature of URL's and web-design and re-design and re-design and ... the URL
by its very nature has little or no permanence to it.

>From what I can see you are looking at an obituary on Ancestry.com
referencing a Bage. To me, the citation would require that you acknowledge
that it was from Ancestry.com and the search parameters that will allow
others to locate it, such as the name, where published originally, date
published, etc. These items should be taken from the item viewed not the
ones you used for the search, it can be different.

Many of these issues are being foisted off on us because E. S. Mills says
this is the way it should be and we all are jumping on it. Let's hope she
doesn't write a new book or we'll all be converting again.

I expect this reply to evoke a storm of protest ... so be it!

Subject: [LegacyUG] Citing LONG!! url's

I am using the new source writer to cite an online obituary and in the
source detail I’m asked to enter the “specific” url. In this case the url is
from Ancestry (see below). Surely this can;t be the right url to reference?
How are others doing this? Any advice?
