Perhaps the Legacy folks haven't noticed how the file ID # has been
affected. Maybe they will see these messages and being the clever folks they
are change back to how it was in v6.

[LegacyUG] a problem with a source ?

2008-07-27 Thread Valerie Garton
I have a source which is on a family group record report which says:

3. (National Archives of Ireland)

And this is not in my source list and so I am not able to find out who else
has the same source.

I would like to delete this source but;

a. I do not know who else has the same source
b. As I can not find it I can not delete it

I hope this makes sense to some one ?

It looks to me as though it has been put some where as the Repository ?

Cathy,  Not sure this specifically applies but I found that if you hover your
pointer over the specific location you want in "road" view (doesn't work in
bird's eye view) and right click, the software will ask you if you want to move
the marker to the right clicked location, just say yes and it should
automatically register. Thanks for the information on my problem with
residences, looks to be just what I needed! Tom McKeever

The "center of the city" (which Legacy created) was longitude

Virtual Earth listed the specific address as longitude=33.8504 and
latitude=118.3053.

I tried to enter the numbers without the decimals but got the above error

Bring up your Master Source List and look at the right hand side of the

But hasn't the bulk of your research been in Ireland? So it shouldn't be
a surprise to you.

What does it really say on the FGS? Help us to help you.

From the FGS you *must* know the family members. Therefore, check each
family member in turn. Can't be too many of them: a dozen at most. One
of them must have an event that uses that source.

Re: [LegacyUG] a problem with a source ?

2008-07-27 Thread Dennis M . Kowallek
If you have any one of the "Show Only" items checked, it could explain
why it is NOT showing up in the Master Source List. I assume when you
say "source list" you are referring to the Master Source List. Or are
you talking about the Assigned Sources for: window?

If that is not the problem than I am not comprehending your situation.
You say it is a source but later you say something about a repository.

I start from the Assigned Sources screen, click on "Add a new source." After
the source is created, I copy it to the clipboard for usage until I am
through with that particular source.

I just can't think what I can possibly have done to cause this occurrence. I
have not had another instance of it since yesterday morning.

Janis,

I am wondering if the method you use to create a new source is contributing
to the problem, so could you tell us exactly how you create a new source?

RE: [LegacyUG] sources attaching to every event

2008-07-27 Thread ronald ferguson

Janis,

You say "I copy it to the clipboard for usage until I am through with that
particular source." How are you doing this - do you use the blue arrow on the
Assigned Sources Screen or do you just "Save" on the Add Source Detail Screen?
(The latter does not add it to the source clipboard btw.) And on the source
clipboard, then do you save it to one of the 10 locations for recovery later,
or do you just use "Save"?

When you come to use a Master Source again, am I right in assuming that you
first "Cite a Master Source" (or Add if it doesn't exist) and then fill in the
Detail Source form?

I have found a way of creating the error but it seems unlikely that you are
doing this, and that is by just clicking on Edit Detail without citing a Master
Source or adding a new one.

Sorry about all the questions but if we are to get anywhere I have got to try
and follow your exact procedure.

Re: [LegacyUG] a problem with a source ?

2008-07-27 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I had a similar problem once. I hope most of these
observations have been done already, but here they
are.
Run File Maintenance.
Have you gone to Master Source List to confirm it
isn't there.
Go through each of the checks under SHOW ONLY.
(Tagged, Verified, Unverified, Excluded, Source
Writer, Basic Source). It might be hidden here.
Next, try printing the source record. I would think
that the source contains more words than '3. (National
Archives of Ireland)'.
Create a Gedcom including only the person{s} in the
report, and send it to a Word document (or what you
have) to find where the computer things it is.
If this didn't help, let me know,

Re: [LegacyUG] a problem with a source ?

2008-07-27 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
Valerie, this looks like you have no title or author for this source, rather
the (National Archives of Ireland) is the publication information. In that
case, the "source" will be a blank entry at the beginning of your Master
Sources list. Take a look there and see if you don't find something like
what you're looking for.

I have a source which is on a family group record report which says:

3. (National Archives of Ireland)

And this is not in my source list and so I am not able to find out who
else

has the same source.

I would like to delete this source but;

a. I do not know who else has the same source
b. As I can not find it I can not delete it

I hope this makes sense to some one ?

It looks to me as though it has been put some where as the Repository ?

RE: [LegacyUG] sources attaching to every event

2008-07-27 Thread Janis Gilmore
To save the source to the clipboard, I click on the icon at lower left - the
two little overlapping pieces of paper ("copy source to clipboard"). To
apply the source to another piece of data, I then click on the blue line
("Add Clipboard Source to the Current Event").

Yes, when I come to use a Master Source again, I click on Cite a Master
Source, or Add if it doesn't exist, then complete the Detail Source form.

RE: [LegacyUG] Error 53

2008-07-27 Thread Roxanne
Sherry, you jogged my memory. When I was having my computer trouble, I deleted
my browser, Firefox, with the intention of downloading it to my flash drive.
Before deleting, my location was D\Program Files\Firefox.exe.

I discovered I couldn't download the program to my flash drive, so put it back
on my D drive. But I created a new folder, Firefox, to contain it. Now the
location reads: D\Firefox\Firefox.exe. I keep forgetting how literal computers
are!

My thanks to all,

paste the event - then go to the source and EDIT THE SOURCE DETAIL and
save it (also save it to the clipboard for use on newly discovered
information like actual day for birth). Seems to work fine for me.
Are you saying this will cause problems??

Sorry to worry you, Janis.

I wasn't referring to using the source clipboard at all, quite the opposite in
fact.

If I understand your procedure correctly your master source is "WW Draft
Registration", using this master source as evidence of a dob but with a
different source detail sounds fine to me.

Re: [LegacyUG] sources attaching to every event

2008-07-27 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
Ron, GeoSci said he cited no source. What I read is that he pastes to the
event clipboard, not the source clipboard. While I think it is possible to
enter detail into the source detail without actually citing a source, I
don't understand why/how someone would do this. Detail is the area you use
to describe something further. If GeoSci is using the detail, what something
is he describing further? How (and why!) do you say it's on page 23, for
instance, without saying what book it is in?

Elizabeth,

Easy, it will pick up the last one used and edit the detail in that.

How can you edit the source detail if you have no source? I mean, why do
you

I have ticked the two options and there is no change what so ever in

are change back to how it was in v6.

Re: [LegacyUG] sources attaching to every event

2008-07-27 Thread GeoSci
Sorry - when I paste the EVENT (WW I Draft Registration) - it IS
sourced. I paste it - revise a few things for the new person
(including the Source Detail like roll # and Draft Board #) and can
save it to the new person. Saves a lot of retyping.

Oh - I have yet to do anything with the "new Source Writer" -- what I
have been using seems to do exactly what I want and is quite clear. I
heard that a mix was causing some problems when printing certain
reports - so I will wait.

Didn't mean to cause confusion.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to enter a street address?

2008-07-27 Thread Cathy Vallevieni

Bruce:

I'm fairly new to using Legacy so someone else may be able to answer
this better than I can but I know the system considers (at least in
the USA) the space before the first comma to be the city, before the
second comma to be the county, before the third comma to be the State
and after the third comma to be the country. IE. For 10 Main St.,
Anaheim, Orange, California, USA, "10 Main St." would be considered
to be the city, "Anaheim" would be considered to be the county,
"Orange" would be consider to be the State and "California" would be
considered to be the Country. If you have USA County Verification
turned on, when you enter with the comma between the street address
and city, you will always get an error message that says "There was
never a county by the name of Anaheim in the State of Orange." In
the Master Location List it would drop the USA and show it as
California being the Country, Orange being the State, etc. I'm sure
there's similar problems with reports and searching but I didn't try
since I realized right away that there was going to be a problem, I
just dropped the extra comma immediately.

If you come up with a better way to accomplish what you and I are
trying to do, let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks for the details of how your are entering address information.
Following your method does seem to avoid the problem of the Geo

What problems would I have if I DID put a comma between the street

I posted the initial question. After reading all the responses and
trying lots of ways, for the reasons you cited (mapping, showing on
all reports, can print 1 report showing all addresses, etc.), I am
now entering the street # and street name in the "Place"
field. Here's how I'm doing it:

1. Enter the city, county, etc. (not the street # and name) and use
Geo Location List (world globe on the right) to give it the correct
format and save that.
2. In the Family Screen add the street # and street name WITH NO
COMMA BETWEEN THE STREET NAME AND CITY otherwise it messes up the
structure and the system thinks the city is the county.
3. Map the individual which inserts the exact Longitude and
Latitude for this address.

It does create a new Master Location which shows at the top of the
ones in that city, but that's fine. From Master Location List you
can see everyone using that location. You can also tag all the
addresses in the city and print a report if you are going to the
area and wanted to take pictures of each location.

This accomplishes all I want and I haven't found a down side yet in
my playing around with reports, etc.

Does Legacy require three places for longitude degrees? If so place
a zero before the 85.

I put an incorrect number in my last e-mail. Here's the correct information:

I located a specific address on Virtual Earth (came with Legacy 7.0
Deluxe Edition). When I tried to edit the current general city
location in Legacy from a general Longitude/Latitude for the city to
a specific Longitude/Latitude for the address, Legacy gave me an
error message "The number 338504 is not in the format of ddmmss.xx
latitude coordinate where:

dd=degrees between 00 and 90
mm=minutes between 00 and 59
ss=seconds between 00 and 59

The "center of the city" (which Legacy created) was longitude was
335318 and latitude was 1181829.

Virtual Earth listed the specific address as longitude=33.8504 and
latitude=118.3053.

I tried to enter the numbers without the decimals but got the above
error message. In the longitude, the degrees of 33 seems OK but the
minutes of 85 is larger than the allowed 59 and the seconds of 04 seems OK.

Can anyone explain how this all works?

Thanks.

The right click only work on the Master Location List to reposition
and reset Lat/Long. If you are on a map from the individual family
view - click RESOLVE to get to Master Location. That may be the
problem.

2008-07-27 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
You should have the screen with the choices (up to 3)
showing a map, locations and people found there.
Highlight the location you want. Then find the place
on the map. It can be a 'former place'. My family's
rented place is now under I75 in Cincinnati. When you
are near to where it should be, right click on the
mouse. It may take 3 times to place the balloon where
you like it best. For myself, I try to put it in the
alley or backyard, so I can see the building.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to enter a street address?

2008-07-27 Thread Cathy Vallevieni

Keith:

When I did it for an actual address "Tustin - 2262 Caper Tree Drive,
Orange, California, USA" (my example was a fake), mapping put the pin
in the middle of the city, not on the exact location of the
address. When I enter it 2262 Caper Tree Drive Tustin, Orange,
California, USA, it puts the pin within a couple of houses of the
actual address. In the Master Locations List it's better to put the
city first because then they all show up together (by doing it
address first, it puts them all under the county, but alphabetically
by the street address, not the city).

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to enter a street address?

2008-07-27 Thread Cathy Vallevieni

Rich & Bruce & Keith:

Rich's way works just as well as 10 Main St. Anaheim, Orange,
California, USA as far as mapping and the Master Locations List. In
fact, it might be better because there is a separator between the
street name and the city (in case someone is not familiar with the area).

I have noticed that Mapping (finding the long/lat) does not work well
with streets that are numbered (i.e. 147th Street). With street with
names iIt seems to get pretty close results (within 3 houses or
so). Is this your experience?

Probably going to bed now so will continue this "conversation" tomorrow.
