Re: [LegacyUG] Old Style/New Style dates for pre 1754 England, how to enter
Because different programs handle 'doubledates' differently, when I switched from PAF 3.1 to AQ, all my DDs were messed up. Because of this, before I moved from AQ to L5, I had made notes for each date, in source details, showing what I knew it should be, then tweeked the date so it looked correct and ignored if the underlying date was entered incorrect (IGI?) elsewhere. When I moved to L5, most if not all came correctly. (Some I hadn't fixed yet). Hope this helps. The only way I have been able to enter the Jan 1-Mar 24 dates on Legacy for those earlier years are 1 Jan 1725-1 Jan 1726 which in my mind gives an entire idea than I am trying to convey, the idea that the date was somewhere between those two dates. What I had done on PAF was 1 Jan 1725/6 which it did accept. Has anyone found a way to allow that type of dating? I know the IGI uses the New style which would be 1 Jan 1726, but to me that is not clear as unless you know how a particular compiler is interpreting the original info, that date could be 1725 or 1726. I'd rather those with whom I share didn't have to guess. So I tried adding OS to a date and it flipped it to the next year and dropped the OS. The same thing happens if I put NS which is the reverse, still adds a year. Any suggestions? Have you been to Options-- Customize-- Dates? And then switched on the option to Use Double-Dating and made sure the cutoff was set to 1752? -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg. RE: [LegacyUG] First and Second spouses reversed
Meg, A preferred marriage is not related to the order in which the marriages took place but a preference as to which marriage one wishes to appear on the screen. It may be that where a first marriage was short without children and a second was long with children then one would prefer to see the second marriage displayed. I do not know of a global way of correcting the marriage order, however, to correct for each marriage: in Family VIew click on the spouses icon and adjust the order using the blue arrows on the husbands of/wives of screen. Re: [LegacyUG] Incorrect Relationships
I am guessing what is happening. Is that 'aunt' actually both of those numbers. For example, my son's relationship to Charlemange is over 48 different paths. Which is correct, his 37th ggfather (x2), 38th ggfather (x31), 39th ggfather (x15), or one of the various ways they are cousins. I believe the rule is to use the lowest number, adding the removed 'count' to it, so your 19th is lowest. Which line is the direct male line? Also, how many Blood Relationships are you using. I used 100 to recieve these from L7. Using the Relationship Calculator, find ALL of the connections to two people. I hope this helps. Her husband is, accordingly, incorrectly listed as the Husband of my 19th GG Aunt. Their child is correctly listed as my 21st GGFather. However, Legacy can find no relationship between him and his parents!! And, of course, the ancestors of HIS father, my incorrectly listed Husband of my 19th GGAunt, are not identified as my ancestors. Unfortunately, This is not an isolated occurrence; it occurs with too many of my ancestors, some as close as my 6th GGParents! It doesn't matter what limits I set on Blood or Non-blood Relationships; the relationships are still wrong! Generations are crucial to genealogy, and being unable to find my direct ancestors has become a MAJOR problem with this otherwise wonderful program. I chose to name that new folder differently, instead of just copying over the Data folder from within Legacy, so that I could EASILY tell if the location chosen for backups and data saves was indeed my new folder in Dropbox and not the default Data folder in Legacyjust to make it easier and more obvious to me so I could tell at a glance. Thought I'd post this problem in the hope that it might shed additional light on what is going on with the Run-Time error 91 issue. Re: [LegacyUG] Digital Images of Census Pages - Tracking Individuals
I, too, track individuals through census pages, and would appreciate knowing how others keep track of other people, who at one time may not be recognized as related, but after further work, end up being so. For instance - a person may be a boarder at a particular residence, in any given census year, and I note, in the source, with whom he/she is living, but see no way to keep track of these extra people. I just recently discovered a marriage certificate for a person, went searching for the family in census records and found that I had reference to them in a census source, recorded years earlier. The boarder living with the family was actually a niece - daughter of the wife's sister, for whom I had adequate information in a distant state. Putting the residing with in an event field would seem to clutter up a report. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. How would you professionals answer this query? May a non-professional offer an opinion?! I don't actually create separate Events for each column on a Census as you do, just entering everything as a Census Event. (I do, though, use the Census for a Source for name, age and place of birth.) I attach a digital image of the Census page to the Source Detail, but I don't print this on Reports. I keep the digital images because I am frequently wanting to refer back to the page for various reasons and I can't always be sure that I will have access to the online image at any time I might want it - Internet connection not available for some reason, subscription to Census website lapsed, Census website temporarily down, etc. Vast amounts of storage space are available quite cheaply nowadays so keeping hundreds of images is not a problem, although I do trim the images and do not save in colour. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

When I create a Census Event I put the details of each individual in the Description, but in the Notes I mention the complete household, for example The household comprised Joe Bloggs 531, his wife Fanny Adams 604, their son Joseph Bloggs 883 and boarder Jane Doe. Because my family file is not huge (3,000) and I am frequently reviewing the main people of interest I find that is sufficient for me to find these other people if they crop up again in another context. I also have a pretty good memory for names in my file! However, I appreciate that this is rather a casual approach and would not suit someone who has an enormous file or a great many other people A few times in the past on LUG, people have mentioned the wish for Legacy to include a General Notes field, separate from the Notes attached to each Individual, where one could enter information relating to the whole file. Such a facility would be useful for recording the names of other people who may prove to be of interest. But it occurs to me that one could also create a To Do, putting something like Other People in Task needing to be done and just add the names to the Task Description as one comes across them. If one inserted each name in alphabetical order, it would not be too difficult to check this list whenever a new connection was found. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Erin, To see the new tree count you have to have Legacy recelculate the trees. When you open the tree finder it displays the last list fo trees that were calculated. You could always use File Save as to make a copy of her file with a new name. Experiment with the search and replace in that copy so if something goes wrong you can reload the original and try again. That is a problem that has been mentioned, but is probably too hard to adjust. Re: [LegacyUG] Old Style/New Style dates for pre 1754 England, how to enter
On 14 Feb 2009 Elizabeth wrote: My double dating system works beautifully with my English ancestors, but I now find that my early German ancestors are given the alternative dates as well. Is it possible to allow double dates (ie b. 1 Jan 1748/49) in general, but to override them for the dozen or so German ancestors? No! Using Legacy's double-dating feature can cause many problems as it *assumes* that every country changed at the same time -- WRONG! -- and it assumes that dates are always entered in Old Style -- this can be WRONG! I make sure that Legacy's double-dating feature is always turned off. However, big problem . . . with Legacy's double-dating feature turned off you cannot enter your own double-dates as they should be represented without having them totally corrupted!! Unfortunately, this is not the case. Direct ancestors are not being identified correctly, such as my 27th GGF. His mother is shown as my 24th GGA; his father as my 2nd cousin 23 times removed, and Relationship Calculator says there is no relationship between father and son, between mother and son, or between husband and wife! Re: [LegacyUG] Incorrect Relationships
I think the Relationship Calculator is, in theory, a great tool. I really like the charts it produces showing the relationships of distant cousins. HOWEVER, I have almost stopped using it because it is so rife with errors and has been from at least Legacy 5.0. The most obvious is that, with some multiple relationships, if you click the Swap button, different relationships are displayed, which is wrong. Less obvious problems can be found if one traces relationships by hand and then uses the calculator. I found one case where a generation was skipped. The problems are ongoing--Legacy has solved some, but others persist. Every time I look at it and try different relationships, I find more problems. There was a thread on this subject in Aug 2006. Some of the problems discussed then involved 1/2 relationships and some of those have been fixed, but I can still produce at least one. I hope that Legacy can do a thorough redesign of the RC soon and it becomes a reliable tool. John S. [LegacyUG] Father/Mother-to-child relationship gedcom export?
Hi list - Not realizing initially that the Relationship to father and Relationship to mother fields were indicating the nature of the relationship (adopted, biological, etc), I have for years used this to source evidence linking children to parents. For example: if I have a court case linking a father to a son, I would cite that case as a source document under the relationship to father section. This is fine when viewing or printing from within Legacy, as they are listed in the source list in the report. However, these fields do not appear to be available for gedcom export, which I need to revamp my website. Is there a way to force those fields to export, or am I going to have to go back and move all of those relationships documented that way to another field (i.e. birth)? Thank you for any help! Re: [LegacyUG] Father/Mother-to-child relationship gedcom export?
I use the relationship to father/mother all the time. I try to assign a source to each one because that shows HOW I proved a particular child is the child of particular parents. I leave the actually status blank (or I will switch it to adopted or step if I need to) but then I assign a source to it. For example, let's say I am looking at the 1910 census and the children are listed as sons or daughters then I will put the census as a source in the relationship spot. michele - Original Message - From: Chris Staats To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2009 7:51 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Father/Mother-to-child relationship gedcom export? [LegacyUG] Godparents
Hello, I am wondering how various Legacy users enter godparent information. I checked in the archive and see references to an event called Godfather/Godmother, but I don't have that event listed in my events. I realize that I could create such an event, but before I do that, I would like to know how others enter godparent information. For now, I am interested in how to enter a child's godparents. Are there any thoughts on entering this information into the baptism notes or entering it as an event in the Events/Facts area? Also, any thoughts on entering the godparents together as one event or list the godfather and godmother separately? [LegacyUG] 1st and 2nd spouses reversed AND duplicated names for spouses
It looks like I may be reversing several hundred spouse orders in the near future. The method of using the up/down arrows when viewing the spouses works but its going to be a tedious job. I cannot understand why v7 would not be able to sort out 2 dates so one would be before the other. Same formats for dates both in acceptable styles [like 2 Sep, 1884 and 18 Jan, 1898]. The reversed names were not like this on v4. I've not yet printed out any Legacy reports in v7, only a few family group sheets in v4. Is there a method whereby I can find all the people with 2 or more spouses linked to them ? Even if its just a report, I can then find them from the printed list. Otherwise it seems there may be no way to find all the names needing reversed other than trial and error. And a new problem has been found with ONE marriage I've found [so far]both husband and wife have their spouses listed TWICE. Its as if they divorced and then re-married each other. They didn't marry anyone but each otherand it was only once. There are not duplicate names in the Index, so I cannot delete one of them, I tried and was warned of severing relationships I did not wish to sever. This showed up after the move to v7 as its a family I visit often for references. More ideas pleaseor should I re-install v7 ? RE: [LegacyUG] 1st and 2nd spouses reversed AND duplicated names for spouses
Meg, Firstly I had no problems with families when upgrading from V6 to V7. I would suggest with your duplicate family that you unlink and then relink. I cannot see that reinstalling Legacy would achieve anything as the problem is in your files - before unlinking you might like to try running FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair a couple of times. I do not know about V4 but I am from V5 onwards it has not been possible to globally sort marriages and frankly I can see only a disater in waiting should it be possible. As I said in a previous email, frequently I find that I do not have a date for a second or later marriage. If there was a global sort by date these would become the 1st marriage - disaster! Are you really saying that you have dates for all your multiple marriages becasue I certainly haven't and I doubt if many of us have? If that doesn't fix it, then select one marriage and make sure all and any children are linked there, then delete the other marriage. This seems more like a database problem, which may have already been present and was magnified when you converted. Reinstalling the program will not change those problems. The warning is just to have you confirm you are doing the right thing, but to be safe you should always make a backup before those kinds of changes, then you can get back to the current situation if you screw it up. [LegacyUG] Putting Ancestry images into Legacy
In trying to get a lot of different types of images added to one person as a test run...I have seen that Ancestry's viewable images for a census are of a nicely high resolution. However, when printed out, or saved [as you'd do to get it into Legacy], the quality is lessened and the image if saved. added to a person's page and then viewed from the thumbnail is horrid, nowhere near the original. We finally did a Print Screen of the original census view and it was finally very goodproviding the image was close up and did not have to be full page. If your quarry was on the first 10 lines or so, the image in the Print Screen was very clear and could be zoomed in nicely for further exam. However, if your quarry was farther down the page, you had to zoom out for a full page shot, the Print Screen image was just as bad as Ancestry's first downloaded ones. We think this is because Ancestry wishes to SELL you the higher quality image rather than let you have it for free as a download. There is a handy button near 'print' allowing you to order the better image from Ancestry. So my goal to add the original census image for a lot of names may not work as well as I had planned.Anyone have another idea for obtaining a nice quality image off of Ancestry ? No copyright issues to be skirted, just wanting to put them into Legacy with the linked name. Re: [LegacyUG] 1st and 2nd spouses reversed AND duplicated names for spouses
Meg, In version 6 Deluxe, (I assume Ver 7 Deluxe is the same). You can select SORT instead of using the up and down arrows to sort by date those marriages with dates. Of course, its one at a time; Same Family view screen, right click to view husband or wife list, select sort to sort marriages by date. To find 2 or more spouses linked, just use a search. Select Search; Find; Misc Search; Individuals with multiple spouses. Create your list or just 'Find First' . The individuals are displayed in the Family View. Just Right click as above SORT to sort dates. I suggest F3 to find the next individual. If you list by RIN, I think the stopping steps are easier. That is you can write down the last RIN fixed. Next session, select search, then select 'View Search List' and start off with the next RIN. Of course, printing the list might give you more peace of mind. You have one marriage with same spouses married and remarried. Others can help you on this, but I'm wondering if the MRIN is unique for each marriage and the RIN for each partner is the same and the date location is exactly the same and source is exactly the same. I think this info may help those who can help you with this problem. Your switch is from Ver 4 Deluxe to Ver 7 Deluxe, correct? Say Bob and Pete Smith are brothers and each have a family and they live next door to each other and appear on the same census page? Would you just duplicate it and have one labeled with the MRIN for Bob and the other labeled for the MRIN for Pete? Or, should I make this census record a Master Source document? Re: [LegacyUG] Putting Ancestry images into Legacy
Meg, This is what I do. I choose a higher quality print from my printer depending on the scanned image. If it is clear and easily read I choose Text and Image, if the original microfilm was a poorer quality therefore a poorer scan the I choose Photo plain paper. I then scan it into my computer or I just choose save and then choose to my computer. I can then crop the excess black. JL, This sounds good to me, how about providing a simple step by step guide for us to follow please. Using nana' steps for me please! I have managed to link pictures using the picture centre process, and have them stored in the Legacy pictures folder within my C drive. So maybe its a similar process? Cheers Carolyn

RE: [LegacyUG] Digital Images of Census Pages
Ron: I transcribe the census listings in source notes because the two main uses for my database are for posting at RootsWeb (where attachments wouldn't be allowed) and for sharing reports with other researchers (who can verify the images themselves if they wish). I especially like having the transcription as a source note because I can add comments regarding conflicts, spelling variations, etc. Kirsten -Original Message- From: k...@legacyfamilytree.com [mailto:k...@legacyfamilytree.com]on Behalf Of ronald ferguson Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2009 6:58 PM To: legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Digital Images of Census Pages Kirsten, Just out of interest, why do you transcribe the census details rather than attach the image to your Source Detail?
