[LegacyUG] Default Browser Selection

2009-08-10 Thread Pat
I have entered the hard disk directory information, of my Google Chrome
browser, in the Legacy > Customize > Launch > Alternate Applications >
Alternate Web Browser location. I verified that the correct hard disk
location is/was correct by selecting the "Launch" button. Sure enough the
Google Chrome browser comes up (as it should).

However: When I choose the "Legacy Home" tab > Legacy News > and click on
any of the Legacy URL info . Legacy ALWAYS BRINGS UP INTERNET EXPLORER
and does not use my preferred Google Chrome browser.

How do I correct this problem?

Sherry,

After the misery we have gone through for the past 15 months with Legacy
7, I am sure that the majority of Legacy users would not look forward to
a "complete rewrite of the database structure".

Sherry/Support wrote:

It's not a matter that we're *not* going to do it - it's a matter that the
way Legacy is structured we *can't* do it at this time without a complete
rewrite of the database structure. Of course, that would have a
trickle-down effect for the developers of the add-on programs and they'd
have to rewrite their programs to accept the new Legacy format.

It's not as simple as flipping a switch or anything. It would be a major
undertaking.

Believe me, we have enough people writing to us that they'd like this
feature so we know it's a popular request and it hasn't fallen from the
radar!

Thanks for using Legacy.

We've discussed this in the past and Legacy told us that they were not
going to accommodate those of us who have a same-sex partner in the
Legacy program. Let's all of us tell them that is important to us to
have this in Legacy. If enough of us say we want and need it, they will
try to add it as an alternate setting.

RE: [Bulk] RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Relationship Entries

2009-08-10 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES

In fairness to the staff. When (no names) someone at a convention slipped and
stated that an update to fix something was on the way, and later found out the
fix was much bigger than it appeared at first, the feeding frenzy caused a
version to be shipped before complete (my guess). The crew may still be in
shell shock from the demand of immediacy of the throng. It was a very tense
summer. I have same-sex family members who don't understand the above
situation. If and when I see a different program that handles all the various
problems, I may move to Program X. Do not send me reccomends, I have seen most
recently myself, and nothing jumped up to urge me to migrate. There is another
thing that needs fixing. Converting Basic to Source writer. With over 2000
sources, doing each by cut and paste is intimidating. Our wishlist keeps
growing.
Keep up the good work.

Re: [LegacyUG] Fwd: Search Problem

2009-08-10 Thread Ron Taylor
This will require several steps.  I use the 1900 census for this example so if
you are trying to do others you will need to adjust the dates accordingly.  The
1900 census heading says "include every person living on June 1, 1900".  This
works if the census taker was being precise about who was enumerated.
Sometimes a census will list persons who died before the cutoff date or persons
who were born after the cutoff date.

Steps
1) A typical census source in my database looks like this "Arizona,
Maricopa, Phoenix - 1900 US Census".  I can open the master source list
and highlight every entry with "1900 US Census" in it.  Then click
"Show List" and finally "Create Search List" followed by "Create New
Search List".  Then "Tag Everyone in List" on indivitual tag 1 (be sure
it is cleared first).  This tag will indicate those who have already
been sourced by the "1900 US Census".  You may have to repeat this step
several times until all the sources containing 1900 US Census have been
used to tag the people connected.

2) Search>Detailed Search
"Clear List before this search" radio button selected
Primary Condition fields: Individual, Tag 1, Equal To, Untagged
"And" Second Condition fields: Individual, Birth Date, Before, 2 Jun 1900
"And" Third Condition fields: Individual, Birth Date, After, 1 Jan 1800
(this will find people alive on 1 Jun 1900 and under 100 years old and not
already sourced on the 1900 US Census)

3) If no individuals were found in step 2 then you are done unless you want to
alter the search to find those without birth dates that may have been born
before 2 Jun 1900.  You could insert "abt" dates for those without birth dates
and then start again at step 2.

4) Search>Detailed Search
"Only search the Search List" radio button selected
Primary Condition fields: Individual, Death Date, After, 1 Jun 1900
"Or" Secondary Condition fields: Individual, Death Date, Equal To, (leave
"What to look for" field blank to include those without a death date)

5) We now have the people who might be on the 1900 census if they were living
in the United States without that source.  If you have included USA or United
States in your locations (see the "Expand/Contract Location Parts" option in
the master location list) then you can next search for people with that in
their birth and/or death place.  Otherwise people who may not have been in the
USA will be included and therefore not found in the US census.  Those with
blank birth place or blank death place could be skipped or included as you wish.

6) Lastly, you may wish to tag this list of people who still need to be found
on the 1900 census and then go to work.  Hope this helps.  You will have to
repeat the process for each census and its particular date parameters.

Re: [LegacyUG] WARNING FROM ADMINISTRATOR: Stop this message thread: Same Sex Relationship Entries

2009-08-10 Thread Jackie King
I'll probably get banned - but since I live in a state where same-sex
marriage is legal, this is not a hot-button issue here. It ceased to be
a hot-button within weeks of becoming legal so Jim, I suggest you get
with the times. This was not about the social issues but about the
capabilities of the program.

What I do see with these threads is some desire for more options within
legacy. Having worked for a software developer for a number of years I
think many of you need to 1.) realize its not as easy as a press of a
button; 2.) realize it has more implications than just the program you
are thinking of and 3.) remember there is a cost - not only will you
possibly pay more for the legacy product you enjoy either so freely now
or enjoy at a fairly low cost. It goes far beyond that however - if the
add on products are also forced to adapt to a new database style you
will also be paying for them as well as you update them.

Sherry has NEVER promised that the Legacy folks were going to update -
she has only explained the problems in doing so and said they are also
trying to gauge those problems.

My guess is if you try most of the other popular programs out there -
even if they have what you want - you are going to find they have major
deficiencies in other areas.

Just food for thought -

2009-08-10 Thread Angela Gabbard
Hi Pat,

Many users record census events differently. To give you the best solution
can you tell us how you record the census events?

First do you record them as an event or a source to events such as
occupation or residence.

If you recorded it as an event
Secondly is your event title "Census" which is used for all census records
or something like "1930 Census" and "1920 census", etc

Jay,

Responders to this list come from many cultures, including some where
English is not their native tongue. Add in the fact that email tends to get

My apologies if you receive duplicates.

I suggest you become familiar with one of the less-desirable
idiosyncrasies of GMail before leaping to false conclusions :-)

When you post a message to the list through GMail, the copy sent out from
the list won't show up in your GMail Inbox until someone replies to it.
This doesn't mean that the list hasn't received it. Checking your GMail
inbox is futile. To see whether a particular message has reached the
list, check the List Archives.

[LegacyUG] Re the alternate name problem in Descendant Report

2009-08-10 Thread Robert Carneal USA
Ok, I got you now. I previewed it, and it is showing alternate
names. Then I generated a RTF file, and the format is different, but
the alternate names are there. When I preview it, it looks like this:

CARNEAL
 Nancy15
 ~Nannie..18
 Joseph...43
 ~Joey22

But, when I do an RTF, the "worm" character is moved. It looks like this:
CARNEAL
 Nancy15
 Nannie~..18
 Joseph...43
 Joey~22

The alternate name indicator is after the name in the Descendant
Report when I do an RTF, whereas in the Preview, the indicator is
before the name. Is this what you are getting?

Thanks.

Robert
But the Alternate Names are showing up and printing for me.

Ron,

I only drop in for a couple of days every 6 months and this fuss about
nothing is one reason. While the quote you mention may not mean anything to
you, neither does your fuss mean anything to me.

"Same sex marriages have been legal in other countries for
many years before they were legal in the United States. "

I expect Legacy is fully aware of any marketing consequences concerning this
"problem" and since I don't live in "other countries" what they do is of no
concern to me and last I knew, "Same Sex Marriages" still are not recognized
by God, the US Government, nor the State where I live.

See you all in 6 months,

[LegacyUG] RE: [Legacy UG] Alternate Names in RTF Descendant Book from Publishing Center

2009-08-10 Thread CE Wood
I did just as you, creating the report in Publishing Center.

On the Contents tab, Descendant Report is highlighted.
On the Additional tab, the box by Index Options is checked. Click on Index
Options. On the Name Index tab, check the box by Include a Name Index and
the box by Include Alternate Names. Choose whatever other options you want
here. Click OK.

Create the RTF.

In Word 2007, click on the References tab. Once in the Reference toolbar,
click on Insert Index, and it will appear. You can format it how you wish,
being Word.

All my names, regular and alternate appear.

Robert, I have BOTH checked. This has been reported and acknowledged as a
bug by Legacy staff. You aren't doing what I am. Go to Books>Publishing
Center>Descendant Report. Create a book in .rtf format. When it opens up
Center>in
Word, go to Options>View. Check All under Formatting marks. Go back to your
report. You'll see coding for names so they show up in the Name List, but
there is no coding for Alternate Names. It will only say. Emily is usually
called Emmy - no coding. I'm just wondering if it will ever be fixed.

Do you have the deluxe version? Alternate names in the name index shows up
in my Legacy. I went to:
Reports > Reports Menu > Books/Other > Descendants button.

Make sure the "Index Options" is checked, and click "Index Options." Make
sure that BOTH "Include a Name Index" and "Include alternate names" are
checked. It should work for you then.

Re: [Bulk] RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Relationship Entries

2009-08-10 Thread Bob
Millennia markets Legacy as suitable for both genealogy and family
history. And it's not as though people in this thread are requesting a
new feature in the program (such as witnesses or Unicode), which may or
may not ever happen. People here are requesting the fixing of an
existing bug. Same sex marriages have been legal in other countries for
many years before they were legal in the United States. Since Millennia
markets Legacy as suitable for world-wide use, the inability to create
legal marriages cannot be considered anything but a major bug in the
database structure that has existed for very many years. It should have
been fixed long ago, and when it comes to bugs, we deserve much more
specific answers than when it comes to possible new features.

WALTER D. CONNER wrote:

Re: [Bulk] RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Relationship Entries

2009-08-10 Thread Leonard Johnson Sweden
I will now bring this thread back on topic! THE TOPIC IS SAME SEX
RELATIONSHIP ENTRIES!!!

On 04 January 2009 Denise L. Moss-Fritch revised her web site. On her web
site she gives details about a work around for same sex couples. This work
around, according to the web site, is provided by Technical Support at
Millennia.

Are there problems with this work around? The answer is yes. What are the
problems? They are as follows:

Clicking on Edit and selecting “Swap Husband and Wife” will change the
gender of one of the same-sex partnerships.

Relationships – Relationship names shown in Family View and on the
Relationship Report for one of the same-sex partners may be wrong.

Have a nice day,

Leonard Johnson

There are a number of other problems with this work around, however – it
works!

RE: [Bulk] RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Relationship Entries

2009-08-10 Thread Ron Bernier
Her responses always give the impression that at some point in time a re-write
will happen. I am asking that Millennia be honest with their customer for a
change and give us an honest answer as to whether or not this re-write is or is
not going to happen. In other words, stop making excuses and tell us if there
is a possibility that these requested items will or will not be a reality. My
question stands. Is this re-write that she keeps leaning on ever going to
happen?

Ron,

Where are you reading into her response ANYTHING to indicate such a re-write
was either promised or in progress? She is simply stating the fact that the
current structure will not accept such a change. Any re-write has to make
economic sense for the company. And there needs to be enough benefits beyond a
single feature that it is worth while putting the third-party developers
through a re-write of their programs too.

2009-08-10 Thread Ruth Nerud
Robert, I have BOTH checked. This has been reported and acknowledged as a
bug by Legacy staff. You aren't doing what I am. Go to Books>Publishing
Center>Descendant Report. Create a book in .rtf format. When it opens up in
Word, go to Options>View. Check All under Formatting marks. Go back to your
report. You'll see coding for names so they show up in the Name List, but
there is no coding for Alternate Names. It will only say. Emily is usually
called Emmy - no coding. I'm just wondering if it will ever be fixed.

Ruth-

Do you have the deluxe version? Alternate names
in the name index shows up in my Legacy. I went to:
Reports » Reports Menu » Books/Other » Descendants button.

Make sure the "Index Options" is checked, and
click "Index Options." Make sure that BOTH
"Include a Name Index" and "Include alternate
names" are checked. It should work for you then.

When you post a message to the list through GMail, the copy sent out from

This doesn't mean that the list hasn't received it. Checking your GMail

It creates it on the screen as Preview in Legacy, it creates it in .pdf but
it does not have coding to print Alternate Names in Word. It should read All
names except Alternate Names have been marked as index entries, etc. because
it never did in Ver. 7 or Ver. 6. I have to manually add the code to get
them into the Names Index.

RE: [Bulk] RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Relationship Entries

2009-08-10 Thread Ron Bernier
Sherry,

What about witnesses/roles. That has been requested countless times and that
also keeps getting the age old response that it requires a re-write of the
database. Why can't Millennia just be honest with their users and admit that
they have no intention of implementing any of these requests. The competition
have all long since completed re-writes of their databases to accommodate these
requests. I'd rather hear the truth - Millennia/Legacy will never offer the
ability to use Unicode, the ability to record witnesses/roles, the ability to
properly record same sex unions, etc. The excuse that adding these functions
would require a complete re-write is no longer believable. This response is an
excuse, not a reason.

only thing we've never heard is just when this complete rewrite will be
happening. Or even when it will get started. I doubt very much that it
will be Legacy 8, so will it be in 5 years, 10 years?

Sherry,
Is this database re-write ever going to happen? We have been hearing this same
response for at least three years now. I think Millennia needs to be honest

No it doesn't work. If you are adding a new person as spouse to a male
then
the sex buttons are greyed out and it is already showing as a female
(and
v.v).

If you start with a new unknown sex person the program seems to default
so
that the person sits on the male side on family view. When adding a
spouse
that person is again defaulted to female with the options greyed out -
and
the original person has been changed from unknown sex to Male!

Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Pictures

I have put the link to 'my' family's stones to include most in the photo
gallery of each person. The multiple links do not take much memory space. When
I started I only had census photocopies and the gravestone to put in the photo
field, and I 'needed' to fill it up.
When your 'stone photo' is there, it can be the Prefered one.

RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Pictures

2009-08-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Jenny,

Whilst I do not actually create an Event for my tombstone pics I do insert them
into the web page for the individual(s) named on them. Thus a multiname stone
will be linked to each of the persons named.

In effect this would be very similar to creating an Event and linking it to
each individual, the only real difference being that I retain control of the
positioning.

Individual's Information screen. I attach a picture to each person if
husband and wife (or more) are on the headstone. If you print an individual
report for the wife, the image will not show up if it was only attached to
the husband. I use this same logic for census information (which I do attach
as an event) and each person mentioned in the census has the transcribed
data attached to them.

What do other LUGgers do about pictures when there is a tombstone with
several names on it? Do you attach the picture to an Event for each
named person and thus have it print out several times over in a Report,
or do you select just one of the Individuals to "carry" the photograph?

You will probably want to add a couple of criteria to limit the records in
the list, e.g. for the 1930 census you would want: Individual, death date,
equal, blank OR Individual, death date, after, 1929

Pat,

You have to "reverse engineer" this. A sample was also shown in one of the
Legacy news articles. Heres the gist of it:

1. Do a search for all individuals with a "census" event and then tag them
with a number; let's say 9.
2. Next, search for ALL Individuals with Tag 9 = untagged.

RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Pictures

2009-08-10 Thread leo macdonald

If you want your tombstone images to show up in reports you will have to create
an event for the person, you can call it whatever you want like; tombstone
image, headstone photo, etc.
In the new event you can attach the photo, but remember that if you have more
then one tombstone image that you want to print in reports then you will have
to add each photo to a new event.
You can add several images to one event but only the perferred photo will print
in the report.
When you want your images (Photos) to show up in your reports then select
Report options>Pictures>select the pictures you want to include (I choose all
three boxes), in pictures to include select "all perferred", then select "Embed
the pictures in the file", then choose your picture options, I find that small
or medium works best.
Hope this helps.

RE: [Bulk] RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Relationship Entries

2009-08-10 Thread Jack Earnshaw
No it doesn't work. If you are adding a new person as spouse to a male then
the sex buttons are greyed out and it is already showing as a female (and
v.v).

If you start with a new unknown sex person the program seems to default so
that the person sits on the male side on family view. When adding a spouse
that person is again defaulted to female with the options greyed out - and
the original person has been changed from unknown sex to Male!

When you post a message to the list through GMail, the copy sent out

I've found several dates differing from the State Death Indexes,
