Legacy 7 was mentioned in August of 2007 ( http://podcasts.dearmyrtle.com/2007/08/21/dearmyrtles-family-history-hour-21-aug-2007-genealogy-podcast.aspx ) This is quite a while for people to be waiting. I'm not chomping at the bit merely pointing out some of the history. On Sun, May 25, 2008 at 9:39 AM, Garnet Quigley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes, a bit of planning and forethought and lest we forget a whole lot more time of course before releasing V.7. Many who commented would have indicated patience and a willingness to wait for a perfected release and manual, an attitude I suspect shared by a significant proportion of the silent majority. But others would have seized on the opportunity to continue flooding the list with messages asking when, when, when will it be released, as happened before and after the pre-release was announced. Trying to be responsive to the crescendo of demands I suspect Millenium pushed forward the dates for releasing their product ahead of what they were comfortable with, and I know way ahead of what their developers would have been comfortable with. To do this not all the intended features could get finished by the developers in time but at least a working version was going to be made available. That sort of resolved the when, when, when will it be released messages as writers quickly shifted to the more passionate why not me first for a pre-release version. Any delays caused by revising manuals to match the new realities of the first release would have excited the when, when, when writers and just started the whole cycle of messages all over again. And for those getting hard copy manuals, would you want the company to kill more trees or have to increase their price to recoup the cost of sending out a second copy when the skipped functionality does get added? Near-perfection is the best software can do and even that takes time. The compromise between time versus completeness in the first release may be a good business decision or not, but it definitely shows the company works hard to respond to their excited customer base. Even when the vocal components of that customer base challenge the optimal planning and forethought for the new Legacy product, and force a compromise between you can have it now or you can have it when it is fully ready. I am as excited as anyone about getting V.7 when it is available, and like the gift that keeps on giving I will look forward to the subsequent revisions adding the unfinished pieces and other improvements over time. At least that's my bit of planning and forethought at this point. Re: [LegacyUG] Re: How do you do it?
It's not necessary if you place the cemetery name in parentheses before the (burial) town name. On Sat, May 24, 2008 at 12:04 PM, Allison Nelson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I do a workaround (sort of). I want the Cemetery Name and the Town or City it is in, to show on my Individuals Information window, directly below the Death date. If you right click your mouse button on the Individual's Information screen, right on the word Died, it will open a window called Customize Family View Information. You can then choose, by using the drop down field buttons at the end of the field, what fields you want to show in the Individuals Information window and the order they appear in.. I chose Burial Date/Place, for the 4th field, and 1st Alternate Name for the fifth field. Here is where I differ in opinion from Legacy staff. They have by default called this field Burial Date / Place and you cannot rename it or supposedly use it for anything else. I believe that the actual burial date is rather immaterial, since the actual burial / inurnment normally takes place within 3 or 4 days after the death date. No one really cares what day the burial took place. It is the death date that is really important statistically. I believe the cemetery name is infinitely more important and there should be a field on the Individual's Information for the cemetery name. My workaround? I simply type the cemetery name into the Burial Date field, and the place into the Burial Place field. When Legacy tells me I made a mistake (Unrecognized Date) I simply ignore the error message and hit OK, and it neatly inserts the cemetery name below the death date. I contacted Legacy about this and Sherry recommended using the + Add notes, pictures, address button, or adding burial information in the persons Events window. Thats fine for secondary information about the death, such as Lot numbers within the cemetery, information about the tombstone, GPS location, etc., BUT it does not give me the cemetery name where I need it and thats with the person's main set of information fields. Unfortunately the info from the =Add fields, does not show up in most of the reports (without a lot of mucking about building the report). By doing it the way I do, I have the Cemetery Name and Town information, in all my default reports simply by selecting Birth, Bap, Death, Burial (all four) in the main report menu. I have worked with it this way for probably 5 years or more and it works great! Re: [LegacyUG] Sources and the elusive version 7 .... again.
This seems like an excellent way to have all show up. Two quick questions: 1. Is it a big deal that the date accessed doesn't show up? 2. In the Source List Name field isn't 1860 census. U.S. enough? On Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 12:35 AM, Janis Gilmore [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That's a deceptively simple question without a simple answer. But here goes. As an example, I would like a census citation to read like this: 1. 1860 U.S. census, Dickson County, Tennessee, population schedule, Middle Division, Danielsville (post office), p. 42 (penned top right), dwelling 290, family 290, R. Walker household; digital image, _Ancestry.com_ (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 27 Aug 2007); citing National Archives microfilm publication M653, roll 1247. Ideally, I would like to be able to enter the census, state, Ancestry, publication numbers in the Master Source, and be able to fill in only the more specific info on the Source Detail, and still have it print as above. However, the closest that I can come to that does not include an accessed date in the url parenthesis, and it carries an extra period. (I do record the accessed date in the Legacy program, but it doesn't appear in the source citation.) The closest that I can come, using the Master Source to source the census year, state, county, microfilm and roll no. is this: 1. 1860 U.S. census, Dickson County, Tennessee, population schedule, Middle Division, Danielsville (post office), p. 42 (penned top right), dwelling 290, family 290, R. Walker household;. digital image, _Ancestry.com_ (http://www.ancestry.com); citing National Archives microfilm publication M653, roll 1247. To achieve the latter, in the Master Source I bypass the author and title lines completely, enter in the publication box: 1860 U.S. census, Dickson County, Tennessee, population schedule [quotation marks for clarity]. On the comments tab, I check the boxes to include it every time with the source and add: digital image, _Ancestry.com_ (http://.ancestry.com); National Archives microfilm publication M653, roll 1247 On the source detail tab I enter: Middle Division, Danielsville (post office), p. 42 (penned top right), dwelling 290, family 290, R. Walker household; Because the source detail defaults a period at the end of the sentence, my punctuation of a semicolon, is followed by a period, which is out of place. I believe that the use of the semicolon in this position minimizes the impact of the misplaced period, as opposed to using a comma. That was probably not totally clear. Re: [LegacyUG] Automatically create AKA for married women

Jess M Whilst it won't create married name AKAs automatically I have thought of a way to make the task a little easier. Go to Index View. Make sure you have selected to Show AKAs. Sort by RIN (this is important, because it lists all instances of a particular women together because they have the same RIN). Scroll down through all names – remembering that females are shown in one colour, males in another so it makes it easy to see the females who might need a married AKA. For the women where I have entered a married name AKA I see the following: 10 SMITH, Mary Jane 10 ~ BROWN, Mary Jane (Mrs) 10 ~ JONES, Mary Jane (Mrs) When I come across a single entry for a woman it is a simple matter to check across the columns to see if she has a spouse. If so, but no AKA it is a simple matter to open up the individual screen for that women, add the married AKA, return to the Index View by closing the Individual Information screen and continue the search. Might take a while, but infinitely quicker than any other way I can think of. All the information on sources and bibliography creation sound very promising! I know that _Evidence Explained_ just came out this month, but I truly hope that the powers that be will make sure the v7 source template incorporates as much of this second book as possible. There is so much more information here and the source components are carefully described and laid out. Mills' first book certainly still stands on its own merit, but the new book expands to many other types of sources and does justice to all the online resources people use more often these days. Renees' post said that there will be bibliography output capability and I really look forward to this. The formatting is different between a footnote and a bibliography. While v6 will provide a master source list, it does not put the components in bibliography format, which has periods instead of commas and does not include the citation detail. I'm seeing the need to break the author field into first and last name so that the bibliography can sort by author's last name. I'm sure this is all part of migrating one's sources over to the v7 format. I just want to make sure every effort is made to pull as much from _Evidence Explained_ as possible because it is such a great resource. Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcoms and 'Open with' default program
Genealogy software interprets the gedcom contents and presents them in a viewer friendly form. Therefore you need to import the gedcom to the program rather than just using the program to view the raw gedcom. On 8/22/07, Tracy Skegg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Listers I've spent months creating reports from Legacy in various formats and setting up an autorun CD-ROM using Passage Express. Re: [LegacyUG] Linda Altman's census templates
Why not use the (empty) description field for the Roll, Page Image info? On 7/30/07, Pat Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I followed the advice of a very active and knowledgable local Legacy user (and member of this group) when I first started using Legacy about a year ago. She suggested that she used the notes section under EVENTS for displaying the census information, i.e. She added the full information for all parties shown in the census for the Head of Household, continuing that way for each census year the main party was found (in the case above, Robert Marshall). As the children broke off and were found elsewhere, they then became the head of their own household (even if single) and had the full information listed under their name. If you could look at my database, you would see that after I have entered all this information under the Head of Household, under the EVENTS notes for each individual in the census information (in this case, Mary and all the children), I have listed ONLY the information found for that individual. PROs to this method: I have the full information at my fingertips when I do research and don't have to look under the scattered SOURCES. My database if designed for my optimal research capabilities, NOT for conciseness. It also enables anyone looking at my database to see the information at a glance. This method had enabled me to find several pieces of information that I was missing and couldn't find until I set the database up this way. The census information prints out in chronological order immediately below the name and general information for the individual in the Family Group Record which I use most often. CONs you have a lot of sources, which I don't mind at all; I use the ibid feature to cut down on some of them. Not all Legacy reports will set up this way; I wish I could get the Descendant Report to set up like the Family Group Report, for instance. It doesn't even allow Sources unfortunately - bad mistake in MHO. Thanks to those who replied. If you used show generation numbers instead, the same example as above would look like this: John2, David1, meaning that John was in the second generation and David was the first generation. If you do two sample reports, using at least 3 generations, with one report showing person numbers and one report showing generation numbers, you'll see the difference. It's hard to explain. Sometimes it's a matter of attitude. Attitudes in general today are so rude that one assumes the worst. Re: [LegacyUG] Can't delete picture

On 2/28/07, Cathy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Jake, You've attached your census image as an Individual image. If you want to leave it there, you'll need to untag them (remove the tick in the picture gallery - you get to their Picture Gallery by clicking the picture icon on their Family View panel) and then in reports etc you'll need to choose to use only preferred tagged pictures. It is more usual to attach the census image either to the Source Detail or to the Census Event. If you attach to the Census Event, it won't show on Family View, but it will print at an unreadable size in a report if you choose to include Event Pictures and don't also untag it and then choose to print only preferred tagged pictures. (you can see these tags/ticks in the Picture Gallery - change from viewing Individual pictures to the Census event picture - or All pictures in box on the right of the Picture Gallery) To remove an image attached to an individual. Go to their Picture Gallery, highlight the relevant picture and then click Remove. That just removes the link, it doesn't delete the picture from your hard drive. Hope that helps. Personally, I think that software should be designed to be as flexible as possible in assisting the user and not purposefully designed to block the user and prevent him from looking bad. This reminds me of a European aircraft manufacturer who decided to design their airplane so that the pilots couldn't crash them. I know of three crashes that were caused by their computers taking over control of the aircraft and leaving the pilot helpless in situations that the software designers had not anticipated. Please don't misunderstand my cynical tone. I started doing genealogy on an Apple II using the Family Roots program and have progressed through the evolution of genealogy software. Legacy is the best genealogy software that I have used and I would like to see it continue to improve. That being said, does anyone know of a charting program or another genealogy program that would print my pedigree charts cluttered with superscripted numbers and end note source references while I wait for Legacy to unblock this feature. Re: [LegacyUG] child - unlink from mother only
I believe this involves unlinking first from the set of parents in which one parent is wrong and then relinking the child(ren) to the correct parents. On 1/20/07, Janis Gilmore [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is crazy, and clearly a lame question - I must have done it before, but I am going nuts trying to figure it out this morning. I have a family group: father, mother, and several children. All of the children were believed to have been born to the same mother. How can I unlink the pertinent children from the second spouse (wrong mother), and link them to the first spouse (right mother), without also unlinking them from their (correct) father? In the help contents (and in practice), I can only find a way to unlink from both parents at once. Thanks for answering this question. I would say not. It makes some sense if you are using the Census information as a source for an individual's details in addition to making it an Event. I use the Census both ways, but I actually include all the details from the Census in the Event Notes rather than in the Source Details. Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do List Ideas?
Cathy, Your suggestion about purging the Master To-Do lists solved what for me has been a long-standing problem, namely file backup had been stalling on a certain to-do item. As I don't use the To-Do list I followed advice from Support and exported the entire file to a new file but in so doing ended up with a few people missing (so reverted to my original file). Now all is well--i.e. there are no error messages during the backup. Hope this helps someone. Randy On 1/11/07, Cathy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Nick, To delete To Dos You can go to the To Dos from the icon on the Toolbar or View To Do List Make sure the Drop down box at the top has All To Dos showing rather than just General To Dos or Individual To dos. Highlight a To Do in the list - then Options - Delete etc. You don't appear to be able to highlight a group and delete them together. You can highlight the group but the delete only works on the first. If you have a lot, you may be able to use Search - Search and Replace, search for each vowel in each To Do field and replace with nothing and make sure replace entire field is checked - that should find most things - but I think this may result in lots of empty to dos rather than deleting them. You may then be able to deal with them in the To Do List by combining duplicates and then deleting the resulting one empty To Do. I haven't tried this. Once the To Dos are deleted, you can purge the Master To Do Lists for Category and Locality by going to View Master Lists - To Do Category and under the Options button there is Purge unused - or you may want to review and delete those you don't want and keep others. The same with localities. In these Master Lists you also have the option of combining entries. Robert, In point #2 it should read: yellow for mother's mother. On 1/9/07, Robert Carneal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You might have skipped a step. You turned on ancestor color-coding correctly evidently, but let's try this: 1. Go to the person you want the color-coding to begin with. Normally, this is you, but can be anyone. 2. By default, Legacy presets the colors as Blue for father's father, Green for father's mother, Red for mother's father, and yellow for mother's father. If you like those colors, fine, do nothing in this step. However, if you do not like those colors, go to: Options Customize View tab, and click on Change for Ancestor Color Coding. Select the colors you do want, and save. 3. After you do that, one more step. Go back to Options Customize View tab (where you were before), and check Display custom generation line colors on screen. At this point, you should be able to go back as far as your database goes. Note that if your GGGrandfather has a sister, she is probably uncolored. She is not a direct line ancestor of yours, so the colors will not be seen. Similarly, your half sister or half brother will not have a color applied to them even if you have the same parent. They are not direct line ancestors. My father's brother's children are not colored. They are not my ancestors! That name becomes the FILE ID when the document is added as a source. My sourcing system more closely resembles the general example you gave. Each family found in the 1900 Census in that location would have an event for Census with that Master Source used. The Source Detail would contain the specific information about the source used (roll, page, enumeration district, etc.). This is where the FILE ID is then added. I also add a picture of the document, whether it is a scan of a document or a file from Ancestry. The picture is also given the same FILE ID. I rec'd an email from a person who gave me valuable information about one of my ancestors but she isn't in anyway related to the family. This sounds like the sort of situation where I use a Master Source called Private Correspondence, where I put information about the type of correspondence, the person and the date in the detail. For example: email from John Bright, 03 Aug 2006 Any email referred to in my sources is copied to a folder called correspondence on my computer.Any time I see a source in my data like the one above, I know I'll find a copy of the email in that folder. When I'm saving a copy of the email, I name it so it can be found easily based on the information I recorded in the Source Detail; the one above would be called 2006-08-03 from John BrightStarting with the year, then month, then day, ensures that the individual emails are sorted in date order when I view the folder, regardless of when I actually got around to saving it. Hope this helps.:-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wendyh65/ Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.aspLegacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.aspTo find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.aspTo unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart - Using Color for Emphasis
Tried that. At one point I reset the colors and now the blue is too dark to read (almost). How to get back to the light blue?On 7/24/06, Geoff Rasmussen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Question from Tom:I recently extended the ancestry of one of my lines and want to give anupdated pedigree chart to my cousin. I've included an example of this chart below for your review. . . .See Legacy News in Legacy Home for the complete article, or just visit http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2006/07/pedigree_chart_.html.Thanks,Geoff RasmussenMillennia Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED]www.LegacyFamilyTree.comLegacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.aspTo find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.aspTo unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
