[LegacyUG] Questionable sources

2009-08-14 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi again Everyone
This query isn't intended to cause any issues, and I'm well aware of
what makes a source more credible etc. Lately, I've seen material
that has been channelled through spirit mediums. I know the
cataloguing way to source this material, but was curious if others
have had any experience with how to deal with it through Legacy. I
realise that the vast majority of researchers would never use it. I
haven't as yet, but was curious about it and how to deal with an item
of this type that lists a family member within it. In other occasions
I've used a "Mentioned in" event and listed the source.

Cheers
Tracy

[LegacyUG] Best fit - image of ancestor

2009-08-14 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Everyone
I've been lurking for ages, going on holidays visiting living and
deceased relatives, started getting called a tomb raider by my family.
Anyways - I found an image in our national archives of a man that has
the same name as my ancestor, in an area the same as my ancestor. His
image is startingly like that of my cousin and my brother. I haven't
made the paper connections yet, but this man is almost certainly my
ancestor.

How do I enter this archive image and document into my file? What
kind of notes can I write to show that I think he's related but
haven't proven it yet?

Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] GPS coordinates for cemeteries and burial plots

2009-02-26 Thread Tracy Skegg
I've never used event addresses, for my locations I've generally added
all the cemeteries, hospitals etc into the location field, as I never
worry about segmenting my locations with 4 or 5 sections. I'll have a
play with these suggestions and see what will work with my methods
now. Thanks for the tips, I wasn't sure what would work for me.

[LegacyUG] GPS coordinates for cemeteries and burial plots

2009-02-21 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I'm preparing for a two week holiday where I'll be visiting family
(living and deceased) and I'll be using our new beaut GPS thingee
which provides coordinates for your location, not just how to travel
from A to B.

I want to put down the coordinates for any cemetery (maybe the
entrance) I'm visiting and also the coordinates for each burial plot
for my relatives. At the moment I've got one set of GPS coordinates
to use as testing but I'd like advice from others using this feature
before I enter these details enmasse. I see only enough room in any
address or location field for one set of GPS coordinates either the
cemetery or the burial plot - how can I enter both into Legacy?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legal surname change - want to display both names in all reports, charts

2009-02-11 Thread Tracy Skegg
The only option for different names in Legacy Charting that I could
see with Descendant charts was to use a married name or not.

This isn't the recommended way to enter names in your file, but I've
inherited some names from other family members where they have used a
slash between the birth name and current name eg SMITH/JONES.

I've just checked a descendant report with one family using the slash:
1st generation uses the birth surname SMITH, 2nd generation had the
slash between names SMITH/JONES, and 3rd generation had the current
surname JONES. Showed up okay in the chart. Its shows the versatility
of Legacy. I have made sure to include AKAs for each surname for the
2nd generation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Alternative surnames

2009-02-10 Thread Tracy Skegg
It's one of the reasons I wanted to copy my father's lines to two
other files, I need to see different preferred names for same people
in reports in my grandmother's line to the ones on my grandfather's
line. I got tired of changing preferred names and preferred
relationships around, especially so that any charting shows up with
the right relationships and names for each line. Its only about a
hundred people though.

Hi Ron,
Yes I've just run a check/repair, then created the descendant
narrative report again - same results with the double name, child
marriage status of never married and had no children was repeated for
parent in next marriage sentence. I'll check to see if its the same
results for mothers and fathers with similar conditions, then I'll put
in a bug report.

[LegacyUG] Re: Descendant Narrative - repeat of child marriage status for mother's 2nd marriage

2009-02-01 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I've just checked another mother who had similar situations, but no
quoted names, two marriages, last child from first marriage "never
married and had no children". Next paragraph reads "Minnie Minnie
never married and had no children. Eric, on [date and place of
marriage]. He had one son George."

Little bit odd that Eric had George by himself, the wording didn't say
"They had one son". Minnie may be mentioned in the first sentence but
he's a sole parent by the end of the paragraph and she's never been
married and never had kids with either of her two husbands.

I'm using V7 build 70086, I tried this descendant narrative report on
two different machines running the same version and build, with the
same results.

[LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative - repeat of child marriage status for mother's 2nd marriage

2009-02-01 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I couldn't see this topic in the Archives. Has anyone else come
across this error? I created a descendant report for a woman that had
two husbands, all of her children are from the first marriage, and the
last child died young and has the text "never married and had no
children".

In the next paragraph I was expecting "Bertha married" or "Bertha next
married" but got "Bertha Bertha never married and had no children.
[name of 2nd Husband, son of ...]". I have use quoted names for
narratives, but I've never gotten a repeat before. I chose my mother
who had been married twice and checked her descendant narrative
report, her two marriages were worded fine, so was her quoted name for
narratives, but I didn't have the same child marriage status to
compare - never married and had no children.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

[LegacyUG] Updating same people found in separate family files

2009-01-22 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
A few years back I decided to run with one family file and do my
research in that, so that I wouldn't have to figure out if I had

My biggest dilemma is keeping any changes updated on all the files.
How do others keep changes synchronised for same people found in

[LegacyUG] MRIN changes

2009-01-02 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
Can anyone tell me which table has MRINs? I'd like to change the
MRINs through Access, rather than changing 5,000 MRINs one at a time
through Legacy. Unless anyone has an easier way of changing the
MRINs.

I have been playing with Passage Express and found that it doesn't
always differentiate between RINs and MRINs when I import pictures etc
into PE. So some of my marriage information turns up in an
individual's folder who has a similiar RIN to the MRIN. I'd like to
change my MRINs to higher numbers to prevent any matching with my
RINs. I've been watching the threads on changing User IDs and MRINs
and have decided to go with MRINs above 20,000 (my db has 14,000 RINs
and about 5,000 MRINs).

[LegacyUG] Picture links importing into Passage Express

2008-12-09 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
Its that time of year again when a lot of us send off reports to
family members with latest updates on research. So I've been working
with Passage Express, importing my pictures, files and sounds from my
Legacy database. After I updated to the 28 Nov build, some of my
source pictures began displaying under a different individual. I've
got some source pictures with a marriage event as a test, the couple
aren't displaying the pictures but someone else is - who doesn't have
any links to the source pictures. I've checked all the sources, the
links with those three individuals and through the picture centre, run
check repair and tested my multimedia paths. Passage Express doesn't
change my data or links, it just imports them, so I'm at a loss as to
why the links are displaying incorrectly. As a short term fix, I'll
delete the pictures from the incorrect person in PE. Its a slight
nuisance, I'll check all my pictures again to make sure they have come
across correctly.

I like the way PE works with Legacy and creates various CD/DVDs, many
of my relatives who I send reports to aren't very computer savvy and
the autorun CD-ROMs are a wonderful way to help them see the
information in a user friendly way.
Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] Timelines

After I read "Getting it right" I started looking at Australian
Timelines, a year ago I updated the one I had on Australian Prime
Ministers. So this time I went to the Australian War Memorial and
used their references to create a timeline on Australians at War, the
only war not listed was Iraq from 2003, not sure if ihat's because its
considered a war or peacekeeping effort here. I followed the help
instructions on timelines. I'll be creating more for facts and events
across Australia and for personal timelines for my family to help me
when it comes to fleshing out the family history side of things. Very
easy to turn on a timeline and check out chronology report to see
places to do extra research.

Re: [LegacyUG] Getting it Right by Mary H. Slawson

2008-11-17 Thread Tracy Skegg
I've got both those books, I've read through "Getting it right" and
re-thought a few of my processes. It was very helpful in seeing
examples of what types of information can be used with events. The
one thing I doubt I'll change is how I add names to my data base, the
preference is for using the birth registration name as the main name,
then add every other variation to AKAs. I don't like to see my birth
name as a main name, I changed it through deed poll, I've also got
hundreds of names where I've added in apostrophes with the nickname or
name commonly used in the first name field eg Gladys Molly "Molly". I
think I'll be using this book like Kirsten mentioned, as a style
manual, with my variations for what's working with my family file.

I haven't had time to read through Mark Lang's book yet, but was keen
to see his chapters on add-on programs and was hoping I'd get tips on
using them more effectively.

Re: [LegacyUG] New User: How to clean up files, standardize sources, etc.

2008-10-28 Thread Tracy Skegg
There was an email from Geoff Rasmussen on keeping the old source
(basic) and creating a new source (sourcewriter) and copying and
pasting from the old into the new. I did a silly thing in combining a
basic source into a sourcewriter source, there are some elements that
appear in the displays that I can't edit in any way. There have been
too many changes along the way to restore prior to my combine, so I
now follow Geoff's suggestion and I'm also cleaning up my one source
that I combined. Thank goodness I only tried it with one source as a
test.

my name lists are blank ie zero names listed, while the individual
pages are fine. In my settings everything is checked for creating a

files, to set up a newer, hopefully better working file - which file
would I delete for this report?

Re: [LegacyUG] Considering purchasing GenSmarts & Personal Historian

2008-10-20 Thread Tracy Skegg
I'm in Australia and use GenSmarts, I like the sandbox feature where
you set up your own complex searches of your Legacy file. From that I
could gauge which people to look at for military records, indexes etc,
because GenSmarts makes guesses at dating for individuals. While the
suggested dating is useful as a guide, don't completely trust it. You
may find some other GenSmarts' elements useful, where it suggests some
online searching for some of your gaps, Legacy now has more powerful
searching so it covers some of GenSmarts features.

I've only just bought Personal Historian, so I can't really comment on
it yet. It's supposed to help you write out your personal history on
various topics. I've noticed that it will suggest various themes and
the help section was useful. I have plans on using it and mixing the
themes and some of the interview questions from Legacy to get
information in oral/video history format, then I'll use Personal
Historian to help me flesh it out into a more readable format - I like
using the Fog Index for that. So yes there are many Americanisms in
the programs, but you can pick and choose the elements that are useful
to you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sentence Override

2008-08-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
I liked learning from Help how to use some of the formatting like
[-Desc] when the first letter of the description appears in lowercase.
I prefer sentence style events, so it works well with my occupation
event eg I can put Farmer in Description but the sentence reads - He
worked as a farmer.

I use an event that includes the various elements available in a
nominal roll at the Aus Dept. of Veteran's Affairs on military
service, and I use an override when I get a Navy person

usual - [HeShe] served in the [Desc]; [HeShe] enlisted [inPlace];
[HeShe] served [onDate]. [Notes][Sources]
Navy - [HeShe] served in the [Desc]; homeport/port division was
[Place]; [HeShe] served [onDate].[Notes][Sources]

Re: [LegacyUG] Adoption challenges

2008-08-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
Kathy, has anyone mentioned that if you have more than one spouse, the
spouses will appear in the order that you put them into your file,
regardless of chronological order? The spouses will display
differently though, if you set a preferred relationship - usually
defaults to the first relationship.

eg sounds like you have = Wife + Husband 2* then Husband 1
(* is the preferred relationship that displays in Family View)
Displays/Prints as Husband 2* and children, then Husband 1 and children

I'm my husband's second wife, so in my file his 1st wife is listed
before me, but my name and marriage is the one I prefer to see in
Family View. In any reports I print with my husband's line, I'm
listed in chronological order - 2nd.

Hi Donna
Did you get an answer to your question yet? I found when I use

folders within Passage Express project folders, and the length of the
file path is long and seems weird. To set your menu button with the
fdb file, choose the one within Passage Express folders and check to
see if it works for you. It may also mean that you will need to use
the pictures within Passage Express folders, otherwise, when you
create your CD they won't work for you. I'll try to duplicate what

[LegacyUG] Sharing family research - sourcing

2008-07-10 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
How do you deal with others sharing your research and using you as a
source? Especially when they aren't picking up on the fact that
you've used this or that book, certificate, database etc as your
source.

They are in effect adding your research to their file and crediting
you not your sources. I like to show where different people or
research use the same information, but when they send your own
research back (now added to their file), without any comments or
further research on their part, I have a hard time believing they have
independently come to the same information. Should they be included
as added sources using the same information in your file? It doesn't
show a whole lot of credibility if you've made a mistake and they all
follow along with you, continuing mistakes in their files.

I especially find it difficult when I've estimated or calculated a
date or locality and it comes back to me as fact because they don't
use those abbreviations or realise the information is tentative. Are
there any guidelines for how to deal with these types of sharing
issues and sourcing for your Legacy file? - Ms Mills has 800+ pages
that I haven't had time to read through yet, any tips are very
welcome.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source pictures

2008-07-10 Thread Tracy Skegg
Ok then, I'll add the source picture to my source, include the text
from it in my source information, but I'll stop adding picture details
for each source picture (I'm only repeating the source details, so I
won't miss anything about the source).

Each element of sourcing is time consuming and to my mind necessary,
but adding details to each source picture every time I used the
picture again was particularly cumbersome to me. Thanks for the tips.

[LegacyUG] Source pictures

2008-07-09 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I'm about to start using source pictures in my file and would like to
know if I should continue transcribing the information from the source
or leave it for the source picture to display?

I can't seem to use the Picture Gallery to add a source picture, I
seem to have to add the picture to each source. I noticed that the
source picture wasn't sticking when I used the source writer and
source picture for different people. It's very time consuming to have
to add details to the picture each time you add it to a different
individual. Is there a short cut that I'm missing?

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationships

2008-07-09 Thread Tracy Skegg
Elsie,
Your Relationship event can be viewed on the Family View screen, right
click to the left of the screen where the labels are eg born, died,
buried - 'Customise Family View Information' box will display. Pick
one of the field names (when I view something different to the default
I usually choose from the bottom fields), click on the "..." button,
scroll down to 'Event', click on 'Select' button and choose the event
you want eg Relationship (double click or use 'Select' button), then
close the box.

When you set relationships with a start person, as you move around
your file, Family view will display the relationship of the individual
to the start person above the Husband and Wife boxes. Go to Tools >
Set Relationships and choose the start person - the individual to whom
the relationships will point to eg yourself and limit the
relationships you wish to see. You can change the start person at any
time to anyone, just remember reset relationships. One of the
previous Legacy versions or builds showed relationships to both me and
my husband if I was the start person (eg husband's cousin), that
doesn't happen anymore, something I've missed in all the many changes
in Legacy.

I also like to see relationships via the Index, by setting a column to
display relationship. In Index view, go to 'Options' button >
'Customise Columns' > choose a column, click on the "..." button,
scroll down to 'Relationship', click on 'Select' button and close the
screen. The Relationship column and Family view (not your event) will
only show a single relationship, so if you are related to people more
than once, you can check the Relationship calculator in Tools menu to
see other relationships.

I've used most of these things in v6 and it all works in v7 too.
Thanks for the idea of having a Relationship event, because my family
don't follow the American or just the English way for family
relationships, add a kinship system with Australian Aboriginal people
and the Relationship event makes life a whole lot simpler to show my
daughter later down the track why someone was a cousin/sister,
cousin/brother, in the same skin group or just called me family
because they grew up with one of my grandparents on a mission etc.

Re: [LegacyUG] Single parent

2008-07-04 Thread Tracy Skegg
Sheri
I can't help you with every report. I've got an aunty who had two
relationships and children to both, then when she was single fostered
another child who doesn't belong to either of the first two
relationships. So in Legacy the foster child is linked to another
MRIN where I've changed the status of the MRIN to single (rather than
the default married) and checked the "This couple did not marry" box,
and I've changed the wording options from "married" to "was single and
fostered".

I've just run a descendant report for her and found that for v7 I also
needed to go to the 'Wording options' tab and make sure that the
wording fits. In 'Report phrases for first marriage or partnership' I
have the text "was single and fostered" but my example has this
relationship as a 3rd relationship so I've also changed 'Report
phrases for subsequent marriage or partnership' to include "was single
and fostered'. In the 'Other word substitutes for this marriage'
boxes I've used "Spouse" (won't show in most cases anyway) and
"Single".

I should also mention that with v7, even though I've got 'Word for
blank records' selected as 'Just leave it blank' the text "Unknown"
still appears, you may have to wait for an v7 update to see this bug
fixed. In descendant narratives it reads "[Name] was single and
fostered. They had one son". I haven't yet found how to change "They"
to "She" as an automatic Legacy default. But if I send the report to
a text, rich text or html file then I can change the wording to suit
myself anyway.

You could change your wording to "was single and adopted". The status
for "adopted" will display in some reports where you have the option
to select "Child status".

Hope this gives you some idea of how to play with the wording to make
it fit the way you'd like it displayed in reports.

[LegacyUG] Restoring backups from v4, v5, v6 now using v7

2008-06-28 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers

I didn't always keep the scraps of paper I wrote down information from
conversations with family members, I have changed my ways now. So
without printouts or other more accessible electronic versions of my
file that list my sources, I thought of restoring some of the backups
I've kept.

I've been entering data and backing up since v4, I didn't always
upgrade my backups to the next version or create periodic gedcoms as I
upgraded through the latest versions. Had I created gedcoms I could
now just view them through GENViewer or GenMatcher, reports with
sources would have helped me out now too, but back then I didn't do
what I do now.

I want to now get to the older backups and check some of my sourcing
and information. Will I have to load v5 and restore v4 backups into
it? Then load v6 and restore v5 backups into it? I've always kept a
copy of the full download (not upgrade) of each version as it becomes
available, so I could load them again. I'd just like to know if I
will need to?

Re: [LegacyUG] Mr & Mrs (was Standardization)

2008-06-18 Thread Tracy Skegg
hmmm, I use plain text, can't see why there would be gunk happening on
my emails, curiouser and curiouser.

Early Australian newspapers use text like "announcing the birth of a
new child to Mr and Mrs John Smith", this is why I've added an AKA for
Mrs John Smith for most of my pre-1960 married females. For my
convenience in cross checking my file.

One of the reasons I asked about deed poll information and the birth
certificate is also the sourcing issue - using the new source writer
format, my birth certificate is going to show two names. I'll now
have Mills pdf version of Evidence Explained, mayhap it'll give some
example I could follow, other wise, I'll have to improvise with things
that don't fit the norm. I remember someone awhile ago saying that
they listed all their events sentencing and sourcing information that
was different. I've been trying to follow that to help me keep track
of what I've done.

Just a quick note to Ron - when I finished the deed poll and it got
formalised. I had to surrender my birth certificate and apply for the
new one, looking back it seems funny. Pity I never thought back then

the side stating the deed poll name change. I guess I'll add notes in
my family file to explain the differences.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mr & Mrs (was Standardization)

2008-06-18 Thread Tracy Skegg
Some of the emails here have discussed change of names. I've changed
my name through deed poll and now I use my husband's surname. I've
seen other family files where the surname is listed as "Jones Now
Smith" or "Jones/Smith". Others have used birth names and add AKAs
for all the names, as well as a note.

I have AKAs for my birth name, married name and I use my deed poll
name as my maiden name, and I have a deed poll event. Some of my
school records show my stepfather's surname, so I've also got an AKA
for that surname too. My little girl will know all my name variations
- but it could cause some confusion for others looking at my names and
trying to verify all the different names as attached to me. In my home
state my birth certificate has been amended to show both birth and
deed poll names. How do others show these changes?

Re: [LegacyUG] MRIN filing system

2008-06-17 Thread Tracy Skegg
One of the tips I noticed in the Legacy website is to create a family
report for each MRIN. I guess its up to you whether you print it out
with each family or not.

I keep mine in various ways, print and electronic files, either
through Passage Express or straight copy to CDs/DVDs, or I save to my
USB stick and zip disks. I don't mind having several versions, in case
one fails. Every few months I forward my Passage Express CDs, my
printed descendant reports and Legacy file to family members. At
least that way I have some chance of recovering my information if my
place has problems again (big storm last year - lost a lot of
paperwork, photos and some discs).

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM

2008-06-14 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Walt
The easiest way is to create a Focus Group through Search >
Miscellaneous. You can add one or more family lines, with or without
extra spouses and children, save the list. Create the gedcom by
Exporting to gedcom, identify who to add through the Record Selection
button and choose the radio button for Selected records contained in
the Focus Group.

If the radio button for "Selected records contained in the Focus
Group" is only in v7 (I can't remember now), you can still get the
list of people in other versions of Legacy by tagging the Focus Group
as a list with an unused number, then once you're at the Record
Selection button, choose the radio button for "All records with an
individual tag of " and add the tag number you've just used.

If you need more information, the archives have plenty of emails on
Focus Groups.

[LegacyUG] Using verified check box for sources

Verfied checked:
a) only if I've personally checked the source
b) only if there are two or more sources with the same information ==
causes me problems when family have passed on incorrect information to
other family members (worse when its published)
c) other?

[LegacyUG] V7 Standardisation - surnames

2008-06-13 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I was somewhat peeved that my favourite way of entering/displaying
Surnames (uppercase) was giving me grief with the Standardisation tip
messages. I'd spent too many days changing master lists for uppercase
surnames to intial case and back again. Then after constantly getting
this Standardisation message, I changed my options 'Initial capitals"
and hit the "Apply" button, it took less than a minute, but it also
takes the same time to turn it back to uppercase surnames when I want
to produce reports. So I'm be "conforming" to standard practice when
I need to, but still get uppercase surnames displaying in reports as I
prefer it. However, I will need to keep track of names like MacCARTHY
which need extra work to display the way those family members use
them. Now that little 'Apply' button is one of my favourite parts of
V7. Is this a button I missed in V6 or is it new to V7? Either way,
I'll be using it more with this version.

This example has been fun in showing me elements of Legacy I hadn't
used much previously, I'm having fun rechecking my sources too and
finding more info to add to my file.

[LegacyUG] V7 Source details ghost

2008-06-13 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
Does anyone else have the Source Detail information showing up with
text you didn't put in there (for a master source in sourcewriter
format)? In my case text in Source Detail information from a previous
source is displaying in the Assigned Sources view, yet the text
doesn't display in the Show Entire Source citations, the text is not
loaded on the clipboard, its not in the master source, but it is in
Assigned Sources view.

I can't get rid of the text through a check/repair. Can only make it
disappear if I go into each assigned source, edit details, click
around and save (not cancel). This kind of memory would be great if
it was appropriate for that source. Does anyone know if I have my
settings wrong or have I found a bug?

Re: [LegacyUG] how to register "foster siblings"?

2008-06-08 Thread Tracy Skegg
The one foster child I've got in my file, adding him was tricky as I
had to add an unlinked person then link to the mother only, so that
the child appeared while she was single, rather than with her other
marriage relationships. I added this child because I do family
history and add whatever relationships I find that make up the
'family'.

Most people would add the child to a couple, then change the
child/parent relationships to show 'Foster' (have to add to list).
Legacy doesn't seem to like that relationship, keeps trying to fix it.
After I upgraded to V7, I ran a Check/Repair and it fixed the
relationship again. So I changed 'Fix relationship' status to Foster,
with the next Check/Repair I ran, it didn't come up with the error.
So yay v7.

I don't believe this, I spent I don't know how long changing surnames

Re: [LegacyUG] TM 2008

2008-05-30 Thread Tracy Skegg
I went through this also a few months ago, a cousin had some research
that he was willing to share with me, but he couldn't figure out how
to create a gedcom, he could only send me the full FTM file or pdf
reports. A willing soul in this list helped me convert the FTM file to
gedcom. Unfortunately, some people have software but aren't able to
use all the functions in them, sometime through computer
literacy/inexperience issues.

[LegacyUG] V7 location format and mapping features

2008-05-29 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
Just a quick question about the format of locations in v7 and the
mapping features, I'd like to know early if the v7 mapping features
require locations entered in a specific way to work effectively.

I don't use the standard USA location format, ie for v6 geodatabase
locations, I change and remove the excess commas and keep the lat/long
data. I also use abbreviations for both normal location and short
location name.

I don't use all the commas that could be used for an American location
because I don't like the look of it on my screen. While I know I can
remove them or use short locations for Legacy screens and reports,
add-on programs like Legacy Charting Companion uses the normal
location (with all the commas), not my preferred short location name
in its charts and reports.

I also use Chapman codes rather than using the full place name eg
Canberra, ACT, AUS vs Canberra, Australian Capital Territory,
Australia.

[LegacyUG] Sharing family research - adding shared research details to Detail Text

2008-04-28 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I've just received from a cousin a gedcom with over 3000 people on it.
Many of these people are in my main file. When I use research from
others I add them as a Master source and add their exact text in
Detail Text - so a straight merge won't add to Detail Text, I've
always copied their text into Detail Text manually in the past.

I'm reasonably competent in using Access and have changed some
elements in my Legacy fdb through Access. Can anyone give me some
advice on ways to add my source's text into Detail Text (with or
without using Access? - perhaps off-list.

Or will I need to bite the bullet and continue with the slower manual
process of merging family by family, then adding their exact text into
Detail Text? This is months of work, but I'm still willing to do it
if there is no alternative.

Suggestions are most welcome.

Re: [LegacyUG] Cremation and Burial

2008-04-05 Thread Tracy Skegg
I've got a couple of people who were cremated and later buried or
ashes interred. For those people, I used the burial details for where
they are finally located, and put in the burial note information on
the cremation and burial plot. If I have more information on the
cremation, I'll add a cremation event.

1st eg from burial note - She was cremated in Karrakatta Crematorium,
Perth, WA, and her ashes interred in Salisbury Memorial Park (with
plot information)
2nd eg - She was cremated at Centennial Park, Adelaide aged 90 years,
and her ashes interred at Murray Bridge Cemetery

Three on my father's side have been cremated with the ashes scattered
- for those I change buried details to cremated details and use the
burial note to show where the ashes were scattered. Reads fine in
reports.

Did you stop changing your Legacy file at a certain date before you
upgraded to Legacy 6? If yes, then you can do a search for any
modified information after that date in a search. This may help you
find differences. I also use GenMatcher to check against Legacy and

I use Passage Express, it can save the whole Legacy file (including

Re: [LegacyUG] Speaking of alternate names...

2008-02-28 Thread Tracy Skegg
I saw emails a while back, where some users had created dummy records
with family names, then listed AKAs, history of the names and various
spellings, and used the Research log. I like the idea myself for a
master file and don't link them to the family lines.

I try not to clutter up my AKAs with the incorrect spellings that
family members have used when they are adding names without any
research, I use an event "Incorrect names/spelling", but when the
incorrect spelling is documented elsewhere I add it to my AKAs.

[LegacyUG] Adding from books published with other people's family research and sourcing

2008-01-16 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I haven't been following the list for a while because of holidays, but
was curious about the thread on how others add to their files from
gedcoms etc.

I have been fortunate in that some of my husband's family has been
researched and documented into two books that I know about, while two
of my mother's great-uncle's family lines were documented in another
book because their wives' family history was researched and published.
I was lucky enough to have photos and references of sources listed
that I can cross check.

How do others deal with this type of information when it comes to
adding it to your file. For my part, I've added from two of the
books, sourced the books and started cross checking the information.
I can't use the photos because of copyright issues, but I was thinking
of adding an event listing that a photo of an individual is available
and cite the book.

I now have lots of original research from my 93 year old
grandmother-in-law with photos etc, I plan to list her as my source,
along with the various places/publications etc that she gathered the
material from. Is this the most appropriate way to source the
information? Other thoughts are most welcome.

If you do a Search > Query by example tab: Look for whom - Individual,
Where to look - Notes:Burial, Contains - [cemetery you want to find] >
Create List button

You should get a list of the people you've added that cemetery to
their burial notes, you can then print the list or used advanced
tagging with an unused number if you want to keep them separate for
awhile. Its easy enough to untag them again when you want to use that
tag again for something different.

Re: [LegacyUG] certificate dates

2007-10-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
That's interesting about the certification dates for adoption birth
certificates. In Australia in the 1960s there were still the hassles
of uhoh the parents weren't married when a child was born. My parents
married when I was about two, so by the time my sister was registered,
the Registrar asked Mum if she wanted my brother and my certificates
re-registered to show my parents as married - she said yes. So my
birth certificate was re-registered and is dated a couple of years
after my birth, my brother's would show 4 years after his birth. Then
when I changed my name through deed poll, the certificate was
re-issued with my deed poll details along the side of it. Governments
do strange things with certificates. How on earth would anyone find
my certificate in years to come if they didn't know what had happened
with my birth registration. My daughter's birth certificate also
shows her time of birth and weight. Glad Legacy is flexible enough to
manage the variety of certificate's that are created today.

In Australia, if siblings are added to certificates, its usually
because they share a father. My grandmother remarried and had two
more girls, her other 7 children are not listed on younger two girl's
birth certificates. So the email I read of biological brothers
meeting up because the certificates showed a sibling and they shared a
mother not a father is pretty nifty. Over here, that relationship
wouldn't have shown on the certificate because of not sharing the same
father.

Re: [LegacyUG] Grandaugher without parents?

Hi Richard
It probably sounds odd, but I add a child to the parents A&B and name
the child "Placeholder for A&B's grandchildren", then add the
grandchildren to the Placeholder. I have several of these
Placeholders because I've got the names of the descendants, but I
haven't yet been able to connect grandchildren or great grandchildren
with the correct set of parents. I fill in sources and notes for what
I've done and how the connection is made to the grandparents. As I
find out more details I link the children to the right couple. They
show up in reports, but at least I get the right relationships
(descendant's reports) and just have a couple of extra children called
Placeholder.

I have added an event "Exemption from the Aboriginal Protection Act"
the proper name for the Act is "Aboriginal Protection and the

name for an Act, so I just shorten it.

I've just noticed the "Physical description" event, never seen it

Re: [LegacyUG] A True Beginner

2007-09-22 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Diane
I won't retype all the variations and reasons people lump or split.
Whichever is chosen should suit your own material and possible needs
in future research. Lumpers use fewer master sources and add more
information in the details box, splitters use many more master sources
for names, family groups and will often group them by type of source.

lumpers - [State] Census, [Newspaper title]

splitters - Smith [County/State] Census, John Smith [County/State]
Census, Birth notices [Newspaper title], Death notices [Newspaper
title], Smith birth notices [Newspaper title], Smith death notices
[Newspaper title]

Very very basic examples, each lumper and splitter would have lots of
examples and variations they use to that main source, but Legacy lets
you go a variety of ways. I like Rich's thoughts of putting it on
paper/card first, to help you clarify your thoughts and then putting
it into your Legacy file.

[LegacyUG] Unnamed individuals

2007-09-20 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
As always I find most of the threads on the list very helpful. Got a
question that some may have faced and would like some ideas on how
others have dealt with it. How do others list an individual when you
don't have a name, however you may have some information on the person
eg Chinese male. I realise that this is up to the individual user and
personal preference, but I'd like some feedback on possibilities I
could use.

My great-grandmother tried to marry a Chinese man but was denied
permission. I don't have his name, but he became part of our gene
pool as my grandmother's father. I think that all I'll ever know is
that he was Chinese, so I've listed him as "Chinese Man (Unnamed)" in
Given Names because it looked a little better in the sentence style of
reports. Eg Maggie had a relationship with Chinese-Man (Unnamed).

I've got the report that listed that permission to marry was refused
in a PDF file, am I right in thinking that Legacy 6 won't allow me to
add the PDF unless I convert it to an image format, but Legacy 7 will
accept PDFs?

[LegacyUG] Parent listing

2007-09-14 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi listers,
I've been following the adoption thread and find the way to list
parents interesting. My cousin was adopted by friends, so I list him
in with his biological family, and with adoptive parents.

I have a friend who used donor sperm for her twins, there was another
participant/parent but it will never be known. I'm sure there are
many other examples of where one or two of the biological parent/s are
just not going to be listed. Then there's surrogate pregnancies, I
don't have any surrogate pregnancies in my file, but I wouldn't be
surprised if it happened. Tricky stuff for those who list DNA. In
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures a child is often passed
over to a sibling or cousin, sometimes grandparent to raise. That
child then has more than one set of parents, but one set of biological
parents. I don't have the answers for these issues, but it will be
interesting to see what Legacy 7 and other software will come up with
to keep up with society's trends.

I did find one the other day when I did a narrative report, others
looking at it must have thought I was losing it to type in repeated
letters eg. sss. I'd love to have a lock on the file so
munchkin can't adjust anything really important. I try to backup
before I move away from the file, at least if I really can't be
certain of her changes, I can restore from the backup.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adopted Daughter unmarried mother

2007-09-12 Thread Tracy Skegg
Ron, do you also check "Just leave it blank" instead of "Unknown"?

Options > Customise > Data Format > Word for Blank Records > (Just
leave it blank.)

It works well for Legacy, but add-ons like Legacy Charting Companion
put in "Unknown" if the person field is blank for MRINs.

Let me put it this way, it can strip them sometimes or leave them in.
The inconsistancy annoys me, so I prefer to replace underscores with

Re: [LegacyUG] Filenames without spaces or commas

2007-09-10 Thread Tracy Skegg
I use Legacy with Passage Express to create autorun CD-ROMs. I've
found that PE regularly removes any "_" for file names, so all files
with "_" aren't found and I see the dratted box with the red cross for
my images etc that have "_" in them. I've had to work around this by
changing all of my "_" in file names to "-". Learning early on about
spaces in file names from this list was a wonderful tip.

I create reports using html, the coding isn't particularly great and I
usually end up reworking it, very time consuming. PE won't accept
text folder names in the root directory, it shows up in the CD-ROM
with text folder names you've used, but in the root directory the
folders are listed as numbers. I've ended up keeping two sets of
headers and footers that I use for generating my html reports - one
with text folder names and one with number folder names, so that I can
send the PE CD-ROM out to those with later model PCs and a generic
CD-ROM for those with older PCs or MACs. I'm not good at programming,
so I do all the changes myself - very very time consuming.

Re: [LegacyUG] Names VS AKA

2007-09-10 Thread Tracy Skegg
I use LANE/LANE-HUDSON for myself and similar format for others who
were born with one surname and later changed it for various reasons.
In my case using stepfather's name, deed poll and marriage name
changes, with notes in private brackets [[]] listing dates etc. I use
AKAs for each variation of the name if its officially listed
somewhere. For spelling variations from family files I share with
others, I either put in AKA or if incorrect spelling (which I am fully
aware of for my family line) then I put the incorrect version in an
event. So I guess I use most of the versions people have listed
already.

[LegacyUG] Mills book on sourcing

2007-09-01 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I've also been watching the sourcing threads with interest. I'm not
for or against any particular style. However, having never seen the
Mills book, I was curious if the material/examples used are
generic/universal (ie can be used across countries) or predominently
North American.

Living in Australia, with most of my ancestors in England and Europe,
I don't have much need for the American sources. To justify spending
AUD$80-90 on her book, I'd need to have more than minimal usage of
sources from the book.

[LegacyUG] Private check box - events (eg residence, disproved information)

2007-08-28 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I'm looking for some advice on how others handle the private check box
on events. I have some events that are on my master list as private,
but most are available for display on reports. Most of my information
is coming either from relatives or publicly available information
sources.

My major concern is for disproved events and residence events. To date
I've displayed residence events only for deceased people, unless the
deceased is a child and parents are still living, these events I check
private. When information such as from War Nominal Rolls shows an
address at time of enlistment etc - should they be displayed or
checked private?

What do others do with publicly available information - display or
check private?

What do others do when they've disproved information - display or check private?

I'm still trying to work out where to draw the line for keeping
privacy issues and not embarrassing some of my family sources, who may
take offence when further research shows errors or discrepancies. AND
I don't want to put my sources offside and put an end to any further
information sharing. How do others handle this balancing act?
Cheers
Tracy

Re: [LegacyUG] Repository Question

2007-08-28 Thread Tracy Skegg
Reproductions of publications can be messy, even in library
cataloguing, Library of Congress uses the original publication details
as publisher, cataloguing rules say use the publisher who reproduced
it. The advice that I keep seeing of being consistent is very
practical. I've got no particular pet sourcing style, I just go for
what I can reasonably find at the time and unfortunately with Internet
sourcing, it may never be found again by others.

I do a lot of research at National Library of Australia and National
Archives of Australia, I copy what I can reasonably and legally
manage, and end up with many things at home. I still try to show as
the major repository, where I obtained the original information.
Internet based sources I print out where possible, and add to my
source any URLs and when I sighted them. I am about to start
gathering BDMs from Tasmania, so I really appreciated seeing so many
tips on this topic and on validation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Creating a gedcom

2007-08-26 Thread Tracy Skegg
Valerie, one suggestion for you if you have more than one family in
your file is to create a focus group using Search and tag your focus
group with an unused tag no eg 8 or 9, then create your gedcom by
exporting to Gedcom all individuals tagged with 8 or 9 (whichever
you've chosen to use), remember to exclude any information like
addresses private notes etc that you have in your file or others will
have access to them too.

More details:
Search > Miscellaneous search > Focus group > 'View/select focus
group' button - add as many people and descendants that fit your
criteria, save and close your list
- Back at Miscellaneous search, 'Create list' button > Options >
Advanced Tagging - select 'Everyone in Search list' button, select an
unused tag no eg 8 or 9, close your list
- Go to File > Export to > Gedcom file, choose all the settings you'd
like to show as much or as little detail in the Gedcom, go to 'Record
selection' button, choose 'All records with an individual tag" of #
use the tag no you allocated for your focus group.

Hope this helps.
Cheers
Tracy

[LegacyUG] Gedcoms and 'Open with' default program

2007-08-22 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I've spent months creating reports from Legacy in various formats and
setting up an autorun CD-ROM using Passage Express. My biggest
problem was Gedcom files and 'Open with' default program, no matter
how I tried, I couldn't get a Gedcom file I'd created through Legacy
to open using a genealogy program. I tried to tell the type of file
to default to GenViewer Lite but it made no difference. Are there
certain settings I should have used when creating the Gedcom files?

Re: [LegacyUG] GEST - Gensmarts estimated dates

Thanks for the thoughts, GenSmarts is a nice research tool, but I

times. Still, when you are trying to figure out if someone may have
been alive during particular events such as wars etc, the GEST dates
can be useful.
