[LegacyUG] Legacy 7

2008-09-02 Thread Elizabeth Cunningham
All this stuff about Legacy 7 and its problems inevitably reminds me of
Polonius' advice to Laertes in /Hamlet:

/"Be not the first by whom the new is tried."

But then, I am still using Legacy 5.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7

2008-06-07 Thread Lucy Shore
I must admit that I was amongst the disappointed when there was such a long
wait for the product after the 'teasers' we had last year. Having said that, I
respect Millenia's decision to delay the actual launch until they felt the
product was ready. I suspect that the actual launch took place a little sooner
than they might have liked as a result of the clamour for same. I have
respected their priorities with respect to which customers should get the
product first.

I was absolutely thrilled Tuesday evening when Geoff put out the message that
Legacy 7 was now available for download. Wow I downloaded, waited for the
password...and by Wednesday morning I was able to use the program...at least
the basic program. It was a while before I was able to get my customer number
for the Deluxe version. Those few hours puttering around in the basic program
made me really appreciate what the Deluxe program does. By late Wednesday
afternoon I was able to unlock the Deluxe version.

All I can say is WOW I love it! Of course there are some downsides (aren't
there always?)...the main downside is that the new features show how sloppy
I've been in entering my sources, as well as my locations. I'm really going to
have to clean up! -- I visualize many hours spent doing this :-( But these
are such wonderful new features my time will be well spent...I will be able to
put out quality material.

Seriously folks, the people at Millenia have, once again, proved to me that
they deserve my patronage (I have been a Legacy user pretty much since their
original launch). They provide a quality product at a VERY reasonable price
(unlike so many others), they improve their product on a regular basis and
they're always open to customer suggestions.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

It will depend on what you mean by seemlessly. They will transfer into a
generic format and you can choose to leave them that way or change the
template they are in. So if you have a source marked as "Census" it won't
automatically transfer into the census template. I hope that answers you
question.

I expected to "wait-and-see" upon the new version of Legacy, which of
course, makes the most sense. Is it wishful thinking to anticipate
that the sources entered in Version 6 may transfer seamlessly into the
new evolved Version 7?

I love the search functions on Legacy. But I can't seem to find a way to

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7 videos

2008-05-28 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
With Legacy 6, there were "what's new" and "Intro to Legacy" videos that
came on the install CD. At least I think that's where I got them.

But, I don't see similar videos directly on the Legacy 7 CD, nor do they get
installed when Legacy 7 is installed. I can, of course, play the "Legacy
for Beginners" CD via Legacy's Home tab (ie: via the internet), but I like
to have a local copy on my PC. Did I miss something in the install?

Thanks again for a GREAT product,
Bob

The link for this course plainly states that if the released it not
accomplished by the date of the course that it will be cancelled. Doesn't
sound like they have any better inside track then anyone else. Their February
date for this course sounds like they are relying on the proposed release date
that we have been told about.

Seems to me that Legacy folks have said they will release when it is ready
for users, as a previous program and testing person, all I have to say is
"thank you" Legacy...I am so tired of receiving programs that have
glitches, known problems at time of release etc. due to pressure to make money
rather than produce a quality product.

I've seen a little preview of Legacy 7 at the Seminars recently done in
Seattle and it is well worth waiting for..just hang in there.

Also, is Rick Roberts either a programmer for Legacy or a beta tester?

Re: [LegacyUG] LEGACY 7

Rick Roberts is the owner of a fairly successful genealogy geared
book store in the Milton Ontario area. He is most likely fairly
computer literate and is able to get up to speed fairly quickly and
,I wiould imagine, likely has contacts to access talented legacy
trainers if the workshop ventures into brand new territory. One of
the beauties of a windows program is is that the functionality of it
is basically the same. any computer literate person...especially one
looking for specific features ought to be able to learn the program
fairly easily...especially when the program is as intuititive as what
Legacy is. Granted, learning how to tweak it to become exactly what
you want is to be and do exactly what you want is to do will take
much more time and is a good reason for having this users group. That
could take years...but it's so much FUN!

Please not that I have no connection to Global Genealogy although I
did spend an enjoyable afternoon there drooling over most of what
they had for sale...

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7 Charting

2008-03-05 Thread leo macdonald

I have had very little experience using any of the charting programs, I
downloaded the free program and tried doing a 9 generation ancestor chart. I
like the ability to add pictures as well as all the other features.
When I printed off a standard ancester chart, I found that the starting person
was placed about half way across the page, I would like to see it placed closer
to the left side of the page. I also noticed that some of the earlier
generations landed on the left edge of a page and as a result part of the block
of information was lost.
Later on I used the drag all individuals of the same generations and the drag
only one individual features to reposition these generations, by doing this I
was able to print off a good chart without losing any information.
I would like to see the program have the ability to make adjustments
automatically to position a generation so that it does not land on the edge of
the page (top or side).

IMHO, I do think that the current Gedcom program, has
not been changed, and probably won't, so Legacy 7 has
no control over it. When the committee that monitors
and edits/upgrades Gedcom does this, it will be
mentioned. L7 may create a tool to send data into an
'Event' type field, but Gedcom won't recognize what it
is. Years ago, I had info on that group (committee)
but I lost it. Wish I could be more positive. I
welcome comments from those who kow more of this.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7

2007-08-21 Thread GBallard
Richard,

I too cannot find my information about the person who was responsible for
the initial creation and the current "Production" version of the standard.
But if memory serves me correctly, the standard was created around 1987 by
the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints and was last officially updated to the 5.5 standard around 1996 that
is still in use today.

The developer was working on a new XML compatible gedcom standard, but was
not finalized to my knowledge and the developer might have retired. I think
there are unofficial versions floating around on the internet under the
version number of 5.5.1.

The original "Official" website for the Gedcom standard was www.gedcom.org,
but as of this email, the website is down, but the domain is registered to:

Intellectual Reserve, Inc.
50 East North Temple Street
Salt Lake City, UT 84150-3011

To my knowledge, this is a part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints. The following link is a copy in .PDF format of the Gedcom 5.5
standard: http://www.ces.clemson.edu/~simms/genealogy/ll/gedcom55.pdf.

Hopefully my memory isn't failing me and the above is close to accurate. If
not, my appologies and please feel free to correct this information.

IMHO, I do think that the current Gedcom program, has not been changed, and
probably won't, so Legacy 7 has no control over it. When the committee that
monitors and edits/upgrades Gedcom does this, it will be mentioned. L7 may
create a tool to send data into an 'Event' type field, but Gedcom won't
recognize what it is. Years ago, I had info on that group (committee) but I
lost it. Wish I could be more positive. I welcome comments from those who
kow more of this.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7 is here

2008-06-03 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
We wanted our Legacy user group mailing list to be the very first to hear
that version 7 is now available from our store. We haven't issued any formal
announcements yet, as we still need to update our home page and a few other
things.

Also, the "What's New in Legacy 7" video is available for viewing at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.net/videos/new7/What'sNewInLegacy7.html.

Thanks for everyone's support and patience.

For those who were promised a free shipped v7 upgrade, we've now completed
mailing those. You should receive it within the next week or so. For those
who were promised a free download-only v7, those are about 60% emailed out.
So in the next few days those should be completed.

Thanks,

I was away from my computer for 1 (one) day and came back to find over
200 e-mails in my Legacy folder. It has taken me hours to sift through
the ones of interest.

I set up a new folder for anything concerning the new release of Legacy 7
and a filter to shuttle those to this new folder. I know I'm likely not
the only one with this problem of subject titles. I only have a limited
number of 25 filter options left available from my ISP. I know this isn't
going to do any good to ask, but could listers be consistent in the
subject line by using Legacy 7 only?

So far I've found the following in the subject line   Legacy 7;  v7;  V7;
v.7; Version 7. If listers would PLEASE use only Legacy 7 in the
subject line I'm sure it would simplify life for all of us trying to
filter our Legacy posts into manageable folders.

As I said, I know it will likely fall on deaf ears, but at least I
tried

As regards your ISP and it's meagre limits, use an email reader that
lives on your machine rather than on the web. Thunderbird for example.
No limits then :-)

What if you just make a filter for "7"?That would catch them all,
probably not be confused with other mail (how many people write to you

Also, my suggestion would be that those who have issues with their purchase
of version 7 take it directly to Legacy sales via email or phone.
Subscribers to the list don't need to hear about everyone's individual
purchase problems. If I had a problem purchasing something I'd deal
directly with the seller and not expect hundreds of uninvolved people to
listen to my whining.

create a free email account with gmail or whoever and subscribe to that one.
This way you can just check that account and know that everything coming in

Also, my suggestion would be that those who have issues with their purchase
of version 7 take it directly to Legacy sales via email or phone.
Subscribers to the list don't need to hear about everyone's individual
purchase problems. If I had a problem purchasing something I'd deal
directly with the seller and not expect hundreds of uninvolved people to
listen to my whining.

I was away from my computer for 1 (one) day and came back to find over 200
e-mails in my Legacy folder. It has taken me hours to sift through the ones
of interest.

I set up a new folder for anything concerning the new release of Legacy 7
and a filter to shuttle those to this new folder. I know I'm likely not the
only one with this problem of subject titles. I only have a limited number
of 25 filter options left available from my ISP. I know this isn't going to
do any good to ask, but could listers be consistent in the subject line by
using Legacy 7 only?

So far I've found the following in the subject line   Legacy 7;  v7;  V7;
v.7; Version 7. If listers would PLEASE use only Legacy 7 in the subject
line I'm sure it would simplify life for all of us trying to filter our
Legacy posts into manageable folders.

As I said, I know it will likely fall on deaf ears, but at least I
tried

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 --- PLEASE!

2008-06-12 Thread Dave

Anne,

But what good does it do here? Misery loves company? The same 2 or 3
solutions (check your junk mail, be patient, etc) have been posted about a
hundred times here and they're still being asked. If Sales hasn't
responded, what are a bunch of other users around the world going to do
about it? I haven't seen a single person from Sales respond to a message
here. Even the Millenia people are just telling them to contact Sales via
email or phone. All it's doing is clogging up an already overloaded list.

It's like me buying a new car and having problems with the purchase.
Instead of dealing with the car dealership, I go to the next meeting of the
local car club and expect them all to listen to my woes. No one can really
help them but the dealership. If everyone does that there probably won't be
many people attending the next car club meeting.

It all boils down to a little common sense and courtesy for others on the
list and I haven't seen much of either here lately.

Has anyone downloaded or purchased the User Guide for Legacy? Is it
worth the extra $5.00 charge? My thought is that it should be included

No word yet,

When I mentioned it to Sherry, she only said that they would not release the
new version to everyone at the same time - it would crash their server if
everyone went to download the new version at the same time. They must
realize that they have to announce it to the list all at once. If only one
or two people get the word who are on the list, the rest of the list will
know unless they are paid for their silence. :-)

Since there is a cost involved (not just a free upgrade) I can't
imagine everyone wanting to purchase it immediately. Many of us like
to wait a month or so until the bugs become more obvious before
installing an upgraded piece of software.

But you are right, there will be keen interest in the new charting
feature and sourcing templates. =)

Hi Lynda,
At the bottom of your e-mail is a box with a red X in it, but no storytellers
story.
I went to the Legacy Users group this morning and am ready to make the final
step in getting this family history ready to print --- doing the sources and
and making the change to adding events instead of putting that info in the
notes.
I got my FFTT (First Families of the Twin Territories) cert and a nice pin this
week. It says I'm a lifetime member!
I saw on ICON that the Farmington Regional will be June 7 (1st Sat in June) and
have told Judy we need to plan on being there!
More later, Sandy

to wait a month or so until the bugs become more obvious before
installing an upgraded piece of software.

But you are right, there will be keen interest in the new charting

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 News?

2007-10-14 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
Here's a possible method they could use to release Legacy 7 that I think
would still be pretty fair and would reduce the burden on their servers.
They could release version 7 in 4 stages:

1) Ship out CDs to the folks that ordered it on CDs. This could either be
done quietly or via an announcement. In the CDs, they should NOT include
the notice that reads:

"STOP - we strongly recommend you to use our 'install from web' . . . "
In other words, they SHOULD encourage people to use the CDs to do the
install, not the internet.

2) After a week(?) (to give the CDs time to get to folks via the mail and to
give them a chance to use the CDs for install), then open it up for
downloads ONLY TO THOSE that already purchased a download version. This
could be verified via Customer number BEFORE they are allowed to do the
download. This could be done by sending out e-mails to those individuals
with a link to a "special" web page, but their version 7 customer number
should still be verified just before the download to make sure the web link
didn't get released to the public.

3) After a couple weeks (earlier if the server slows down earlier), open up
the downloads to folks purchasing the Deluxe version AT THAT TIME (ie: they
didn't pre-order it).

4) After a couple weeks (earlier if the server slowed down), open up the
downloads to everyone.

This would "reward" the folks that spent extra to order the CDs. It would
also "reward" folks that pre-ordered it for download, but not as much as it
would "reward" the CD folks - 'course the CD folks paid a bit more too, so
that's fair.

2007-10-14 Thread Wayne Martell

A couple of more reasonable solutions would be:

1. Increase the capacity of their server(s)
2. Farm it out to download.com (or similar site) with appropriate links to
the site

Get ready. You are about to get your head bit off by some of the meaner people

There isn't an official release date. Hopefully it will be soon :) I for one

It's certainly not a taboo question and I don't know of anyone who would
bite her head off for asking it!

It's just that we don't have a release date yet. The programmers are working
very hard at getting the new version released as soon as possible.

I happily noticed in Legacy Chart that there is the possibility to show male

Looking forward to getting Legacy 7 incl. LegacyChart.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7- male descendents

Thanks Reg,

what I really meant - but not said :) - was: I wanted to export only the
bloodline (male) in a gedcom file. That means: All descendent from a man
called "Stone" , who have the name "Stone" with their wifes or husbands. I
didn't find the way. Or do you or anybody else know how that could be done?

Appreciate any suggestions

report from the Reports menu in Legacy 6 that it gives pretty well a
Bloodline (male) admittedly the mothers are shown but then again without
said person none of us would be here, the report can be modified to be
solely the selected persons line with mother or selected person with
mother & siblings.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Source Template Question

2008-10-07 Thread Debbie Freeman
Hello Everyone,

I am in need of some advice. I have the latest version of Legacy Deluxe.

In trying the new Source Templates, I have come across some templates that
almost work, or do not work.

I was wondering what others do in that case.

My examples are the following.

Rootsweb - California Death Records

Labs - LDS Michigan Deaths, Marriages

Bureau of Land Management BLM GLO Database - Desert Land.

Thanks for your advice and help in learning this new version of Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 7 and Apple Computers?

2008-05-27 Thread familyjesse
Hello,

Does anyone know if Legacy 7 will run on Apple Computers? I have Legacy
Deluxe and my Dad is looking for a program but he's using an Apple. Since
we'd be working together I'd like it if he could use Legacy also.

Thanks,
Carol

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 is here

2008-06-03 Thread Belinda
Thanks for letting us know Geoff. I know I can't wait to get it downloaded.

However, I don't know if it is just me (in my excitement) or if there is a
problem... (If it is just me please forgive this email.) However on the
upgrade page on the web there is no button to 'add to cart' as there is when
buying without the upgrade. I can't find a way to click on the item that I
want to add to my cart. I've tried in both Firefox and IE.

If I'm missing something and someone could point me in the right direction I
would really appreciate it...

Thanks again for all your hard work Geoff and all the Legacy Team.

Regard,

Belinda

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 with Clooz

2008-06-03 Thread Heather Stovold
I don't have Legacy 7 yet - but the Author of Clooz, on the Clooz user
group, has said that it will not interface with Legacy 7 because of the
change in the Legacy database.

SO - if you are using Legacy 6 and Clooz integrated together (using the same
database for both) - you will want to copy the Legacy 6 version of your
family files BEFORE opening it with Legacy 7 - and use the copy in clooz.
You will have to update them seperately, like you would have in version 1 of
Clooz, or like people using clooz eith a different genealogy program

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 is here

2008-06-04 Thread Rhonda Lucas
Hi Belinda,

I queried this earlier today and Geoff responded with:

"If you purchase Legacy 7 or the upgrade to Legacy 7 you will receive
an email with download and installation instructions. Or continue to
watch the website, or we will be emailing to our Legacy News mailing
list in the next day or so."

So, we need to sit back and wait for that email to arrive.

In my boredom I even downloaded the standard V7 to have a play, but
after doing it twice I still haven't received the password email so I
could set it up, and I even tried two different email addresses.

Very frustrating, but it sounds like I would still be waiting if I
hadn't pre-purchased and tried to purchase it today.

Cheers, Rhonda

yay.. emails finally came through for 'free' version and I now have it
working, now I just need to wait for the 'free' upgrade email to

I've had a thought, this version was a Christmas gift from my cousin
as he knows how fanatical I am about Legacy and when he signed me up
the welcome emails although addressed to me were sent to his email

Sherry or another staff member confirm this please?

On a side note, an hour with the standard version certainly makes the
deluxe worthwhile, how did I ever survive without it?

Does anyone know if Legacy 7 supports adding Word or PDF files as such, and
not as sound or video files?

The password should go to the email address that you entered in Step 1 of
the download process.

If your cousin used his email address when he ordered Legacy for you, then
he will be the one to get the new customer number.

Thanks for using Legacy.

I've had a thought, this version was a Christmas gift from my cousin
as he knows how fanatical I am about Legacy and when he signed me up
the welcome emails although addressed to me were sent to his email
address, I wonder if that is where the 'upgrade' email went. Could
Sherry or another staff member confirm this please?

Thanks, Rhonda

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 is here

2008-06-04 Thread JLB
I never delete my junk mail automatically as the filter is not always
correct in its interpretation. I didn't have any however. v.7 came
through after 9 hours, just as I was going to bed so I just went to
bed. There's always another day. I just made the comment to give some
'comfort' to a person still waiting and thinking the rest of us were
getting a better deal. I don't know if anyone has escaped the wear and
tear one way or another.

There's a purchase link now but so far I don't think anyone's getting it
from there either, just paying our money and waiting some more.

At least it's out, now I will just sit back and wait for the email, I
thought there would be a download link. I new I shouldn't have taken
the day off and stayed home to fiddle with the new release.

We are still sending out emails to those who get the free upgrade. Sorry but
it will probably be another couple days before we are finished. We can't send

we are running them through normal email accounts to improve deliverability.

The User Guide is 336 pages and if bought in hard copy is $14.95. I've
found it very helpful (in paper). Legacy is a great program at a terrific
price in my opinion. Considering the work that would have gone into the
manual I doubt that they are recouping their costs with a $5 charge.

2008-08-08 Thread Alix Heron
Hi!
I'm a new user of Legacy and I can't figure how to do some things I want to
do.  Is there a way to print out a list of the whole family in order of birth
date?  I've tried to use the search of finding everyone in a certain century
with 17xx or 17** but that didn't work.  I can find people born in a specific
year, but not everyone born in the 1700s.  I'd really like to put my family in
order of birth, but I can't figure out how to do it.  Anyone know if the
software does this?
Thanks, Jude

2008-08-08 Thread JLB
It's ringing a bell. I think we went a round on this before. If you go
to the Name List and print out a csv file and then import it into a
spreadsheet you might be able to sort your list there.

In the meantime you can search centuries by looking for Individual born
before 1800 AND after 1699, for example.
