Lloyd, Is it the pdf viewer where you are using the down arrow and scroll bar and get the error ? If so, which pdf viewer are you using ? I'm trying to replicate the problem but cannot. I would first try the update suggestion and if that doesn't work then delete the appropriate USR file. I have just reread your initial post. Are you saying that the report will not open in Acrobat Reader? If so your problem is much more likely to be with the Adobe program. Lloyd, Is that report open in Preview or did you create a PDF file and have it open in Adobe Reader? If you have it open in Preview you should NOT be able to switch back to the data file, only the preview should be active. Give me more detailed step by step instructions on how you have both Legacy and the PDF report open. If the report is open in Adobe reader what are you looking at in Legacy? The install.log file was the ONLY Legacy file that the uninstall routine removed (or perhaps more correctly, the only obvious file that it removed; there may have been others I am unaware of, but none that affected the basic operation of the program). It didn't matter whether I tried to uninstall from Windows Add/Remove, or from the Legacy uninstall utility, install.log was removed. I know this because I retrieved the install.log file from Mozy and put it back in the Legacy folder after my first uninstall attempt from Add/Remove failed. I then tried again directly from the Legacy uninstall utility. Same result. The install.log file disappeared and I had to "uninstall" Legacy via registry edit. It only makes a difference if you have more than one version of Legacy installed on your computer (which we don't recommend). If you uninstall through the Control Panel, all versions you have installed will be uninstalled and you'll have to reinstall the ones you want to keep. Thanks for using Legacy. RE: [LegacyUG] Run time error '5'
Nope, no Norton programs on my system. Here is the sequence of what occurred: I downloaded 7.0.0.90. (Either shortly before or shortly after installing 7.0.0.90, I also installed Adobe Reader 9). Legacy seemed to work properly for several days, but I had not tried to print. When I tried to preview/print a report, Legacy "froze" and could only be shut down with Ctrl-Alt-Del and End Process. (No error message appeared). After trying several other things (deleting .usr files, etc.), I tried to uninstall Legacy. It appeared to uninstall, but I later discovered Legacy was still on my computer and operational (except for my print/preview problem). It was at this point that I discovered the install.log file was no longer on my system and I could not uninstall Legacy. The only way I could remove Legacy from my system was to delete it from the Registry. I then reinstalled, and it was at this point I got Error 339 when trying to print/preview. I fixed that by following the Legacy online instructions for downloading the affected .ocx files (vsprint8.ocx and vspdf8.ocx if I'm remembering correctly). Hope this helps, Connie --- On Wed, 4/1/09, Sherry/Support wrote: > From: Sherry/Support > Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Run time error '5' > To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com > Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 1:33 AM > Connie - and Phil too > > By any chance do either of you have Norton 360 installed? > > Sherry > Customer Support > Millennia Corporation > supp...@legacyfamilytree.com > http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com > > -Original Message- > From: k...@legacyfamilytree.com > [mailto:k...@legacyfamilytree.com] On Behalf > Of Connie Sheets > Sent: Tuesday, March 31, 2009 2:34 PM > To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com > Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Run time error '5' > > > Absolutely. When I had run time error 5 problems Sherry, Install was not there. Install beginning with I. There is some reason that file gets deleted, not by me nor by the other users from reading the information they put on line. I wish now that I would have done a print screen so that you could have seen it for yourself. RE: [LegacyUG] Run time error '5'
Christopher, The install.log file most of the time is not missing. The messages says "The install.log file cannot be opened" or something like that. It's a problem with the uninstaller and we believe it's been fixed in the latest build. However uninstalling is not required for the repair of Error 5. You just need to delete the .usr files and then reinstall with the most recent build of Legacy v7 (or the final build if you're using an earlier version of Legacy). No registry edit is needed. With Legacy closed, go to the c:\Legacy folder on your hard drive. Delete the install.log file. Then go to the c:\Legacy\Backup folder and delete any files there with the word "install" in the file name. Reinstall Legacy with the latest build from our website and you should have no problem uninstalling Thanks for using Legacy. Christopher, Are you familiar with the Registry? Is your install log missing from the Legacy folder? In your email you do not say, only imply :-). It is not difficult to delete Legacy from the Registry but I only advise on how to do it with people I am sure have sufficient knowledge and, of course, it is entirely at their own risk and I accept no responsibility for any outcome. Brian, it would seem to me that in the future when a known problem surfaces, especially one caused by some kind of programming error, a general statement could or should be made to all users, not just those on LUG. For instance in a short newsletter or on the Legacy Home Page that shows on our pc's when we open Legacy. Dave Johnson wrote: I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this "Run Time Error '5' Run Time Procedure Call or Argument" since the latest update to Legacy 7.0.0.89? This occurs when adding a new Source with the SourceWriter. All you have to do is add a w in the Url field. This error occurs and after clicking OK, Legacy shuts down. I have had to resort to putting the url in Notepad and coping it into the Url field in Legacy. That works. But you cannot start typing www. Or you get this error. Charles, I have been in touch with Phil off-list regarding his problem. May I make it clear, to those who do not know, that the Legacy files (or those of any other program for that matter) should not be deleted without either a) uninstalling first, or b) manually changing the Registry entries. Re: [LegacyUG] Run Time Error "5" & SourceWriter Work-Arounds
Thanks, Jenny. I've had several templates work for the first few lines, but get the error and shut down when I'm entering data on the last or next to last data field. I will experiment with bottom up entry and see what happens and used saved sources when possible. I think Dave mentioned he had some success with copying from Notepad. Or, I may just use Basic Sources. Those who depend upon SourceWriter and have not upgraded to 7.0.0.89, best stick with .86 for now! The very first time I used Legacy after updating I started getting the error and complete shutdown. I looked at the solution by error number and started deleting .usr files as it suggests. What I didn't realize is that instead of deleting the USR files when I hit the delete button, Legacy or my pc simply copied the same file over and over and over. Now I have copy of copy of copy, etc. I checked Legacy on my laptop and only have 5 or 6 USR files and they deleted fine. I tried to delete Legacy 7, latest update and got the error "Could not locate install.log file"install.log file". No such luck. I sent the information to Legacy Support on Sunday the 8th and received a log number and a bunch of potential solutions which have absolutely nothing to do with the problem at hand. As it stands, I cannot use Legacy, I cannot delete Legacy and see if a fresh start would clear out my USR files and eliminate all of the copies. So, I'm not sure what to do next. Re: [LegacyUG] Run Time Error "5"
Connie Sheets wrote I am curious if anyone who (1) had been using Sourcewriter prior to the latest update, and (2) has installed 7.0.0.89 is able to use SourceWriter at all, for any template. If so, which templates work? This is interesting - FSVO "interesting"! Knowing I had created a few new sources since 7.0.0.89 but not being sure now whether they were new or all edits of existing ones, I just tried a few experiments. First, I created a Family Group Sheet - privately held. No problem at all. Then I tried an E-mail - grouped by correspondent. I entered a title for the Source then tried to type Sender's surname and got Error 5. Then I tried the same template, but this time I entered the title, then put in Recipient's surname and *then* put in Sender's surname and carried on down the fields with no problem. So now I can offer 2 stop-gap measures that may work until this problem is fixed. One, as I said before, is to edit an existing Source, but type new info before deleting the old. (Not always necessary, I think, but better safe than sorry!). The second is to create a new Source but don't start typing with the first (non-title) field - creep up on it from below! Can't guarantee that either method will work for you but I am managing just fine those ways. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Phil; There is a program that I've used for may years called Z-TreeWin that will show you all files on your hard disk - hidden files. files in hidden directories, system files, read-only files etc. You can move or delete files, directories, directory trees, tag entire disks and copy the entire directory structure, fith all files included to another disk. Since I use it, I have never bothered with the Window file management system - it has too many quirks. It is at http://www.ztree.com/html/ztreewin.htm They have an 30 day free evaluation and if you like it the license is 29.95. No, I have no conection to the company that produces it, but like recommending Legacy, I highly recomend Z-TreeWin. Re: [LegacyUG] Run Time Error "5"
Dennis and Ron, I've looked in my C\Legacy 7 folder and do not find the Install.log file. Unless it's hidden in another file it just isn't there. Also I did send a problem report to the Legacy's support link and received back a ticket number. That was Sunday as I recall. I had earlier sent a note to Sherry and then thought that maybe I should just send it to the Legacy Support. Serry responded and indicate that she had forwarded my question for help to the ticketing system. - Original Message - From: "Dennis M. Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Run Time Error "5"
Or if you select a new source using the source writer "Generic", " generic manuscript", try entering anything at all the Collection Field. Then it appears to create a Blank source??? in the source list. I tried it twice and there are 3 blank lines at top of my source list. If you run Master List cleanup, it removes the blank lines. Also, I have an event Physical Description. I have edited the sentence as and removed the location by removing the check mark. It looks like this [onDate] [HeShe] was described as [Desc].[Sources] [Notes] It prints like He was described as being of medium height, medium build, grey eyes, and light brown hair on 12 Sep 1918. Instead of On 12 Sep 1918 he was described as being of medium... It works fine on my other events where I have change the sentence definition. The only difference on this one is that I'm not using the location field. Also, something that never happened before. I'm entering a new person. Down in the burial field, I messed up what I was entering. I used to be able to hit the escape button which would erase everyting in the field, instead of backspacing or deleting every character in the field. Now, if I hit escape, instead of a blank field, it takes me out of the screen and all the information is gone, name, dob, dod, events, etc. Maybe I shouldn't have been doing this?? Today, I have run File Maintenance Check/Repair numerous times, I have run Master Lists cleanup numerous times. I have spent long periods of time trying to enter new sources due to the Runtime Error 5. I have loved Legacy since the day I started using it. I still love the things it can do, but I am getting really tired of the time I spend "Maintaining" my database. I want to do genealogy and not database repairs. I don't want to be negative and I'm trying to stay positive and keep hoping that it will improve, but right now, I am at my wit's end. I am under a deadline and 3 hours of valuable time has been spent trying to make things work. I am at a loss. Maybe I'm just having a really bad day?!?! Re: [LegacyUG] Run Time Error "5"
I have exactly the same problem. Dave, I have already sent in the bug report on this. We discussed it a few days earlier, as others have confirmed the same problem. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this "Run Time Error '5' Run Time Procedure Call or Argument" since the latest update to Legacy 7.0.0.89?
