I think what you are looking for is SSAFA, this grew out of the Soldiers and 
Sailors Association, and you will find them at http://www.ssafa.org.uk/ . I 
would imagine that should you contact them, they may well be able to help with 
your relative, and may even give you any details they have, providing that it 
is not too recent. (As they are a charity the offer of a donation would not go 
amiss ;-) )

template for it - artifacts is probably as close as you can get. I hope to get 
you sonme further information on the charity - I do know of it btw.
 
The marrige paper which you have should be coloured green and is part of a copy 
issued by the GRO (General Records Office) of an original marriage certificate. 
The original is obviously with the married couple, so the GRO only issues 
copies. In full it contains where and when it took place, the names of the 
couple their ages (might just say "full") occupations, addresses, names of 
their fathers and names of witnesses and who officiated.
 
For the template Add a new Source Writer template by entering in the Search box 
"marriage England".

application is, unless you are referring to a marriage request from someone in 
the Armed Forces - if so can you say what year, when and which branch of the 
Services. You could also mean an application for a license, or the calling of 
the Banns (unlikely).

I list them as separate sources. As you have already noticed the information 
from each source can vary. The purpose of sources is to verify the accuracy 
of the information. For example. My g-grandfather Wm was a member of Liberty 
Church so Liberty Church is entered in as a Master Source.
He is buried in Liberty Cemetery I learned this from an on-line source so I 
list the source of the information as the on-line repository.
I then visited the cemetery and took pictures. I list myself as a primary 
source and use that to catalogue the pictures.
If the pictures had come from the on-line site I would have used that as the 
source for the pictures.
I have not yet used Liberty Church as a master source because to the best of 
my knowledge no one has found the old records from that church if there are 
any old records. But I keep the Church as a master source to indicate that I 
have checked in there.

What do people do when they have several different repositories for the 
same information. For example: I have Cemeteries & Churches list under one 
master list (yes, I'm a lumper). But some of the cemetery information is 
from on-line databases (with or without picture) & some is from me 
personally visiting the cemetery. I have been using the detail to 
differentiate, but is there a better way? What do other's do?

Some years ago I ordered a census film from the FHL.  The names on the
page I needed were obliterated.  On another occassion, I was at the
Sacramento State Library where I looked at the same film.  The page I

I think you are taking "lumping" to an extreme!

I am definitely a "lumper" but I would have separate Master Source for 
each Cemetery or Church and then use the Source Details to differentiate 
between sources within each place, such as different gravestones, 
different cemetery records, different memorials, etc..

Well, I'm a "splitter" and e.g. Census info.
Source list names would look something like this
VA 1850 Census Botetourt Fincastle PO --HerQu [HeritageQuestOnline]
VA 1850 Census Botetourt Fincastle PO --Ancestry[.com]
VA 1850 Census Botetourt Fincastle PO --LOV m/f [Library of Virginia 
microfilm]


That way I can type the publication and repository info in ONE time for each 
publisher and ONE time for each repository in my Master Source List.  To add 
a new master source for the same repository, I use the Edit feature (& save 
to choice 2) to avoid much retyping--as I explained in detail in an email a 
couple of weeks ago.
That's ONE time for ALL Virginia censuses from, e.g., HerQu -- I just copy 
and change ONLY the items that need to be changed, e.g., census year &/or 
county &/or PO/twsp. So I'm careful to choose from the Master List a source 
that's as similar as possible to the new one I'm entering.
But a WARNING -- you have to be SURE you remember to save to choice 2 
(usually) and not make a careless mistake!
Page and line numbers and head of household go in the detail--and that info 
is automatically carried over, at least if your source is on the source 
clipboard.  So you need to do almost NO re-typing of the same info, which is 
the main reason I'm a "splitter."

Hi Kirstin,

Well I don't lump to the extent that you do.

Different "publisher", different Master Source.
Repositories is a more troubling category I think. The same book or 
microfiche indexes or images etc can be found in many different 
repositories. Repositories usually contain heaps of different 
sources. So I don't normally make a Master Source for a 
Repository.  I'm more interested in the origin of the book or 
microfiche or digital images, although where it/they can be viewed is 
also important.


Different database, different Master Source - unless there is 
something definite to link small databases.


For example I have a Master Source for the Dorset Online Parish Clerk 
website made up of transcriptions of parish registers, censuses etc 
for each town in Dorset, England.
I also access Dorset parish registers in other ways (transcriptions 
on other sites, LDS films, photocopies kindly sent me by fellow 
genealogists from the Dorset Record Office ...)

Speaking of access date, I notice there is 2 places to add a date. I use 
the Master Source date for when I first added the source. Then I use the 
detail date for when I added that particular information. I use the 
repository also in the detail, so I know if it was verified (& I would 
check) with the original information (if such a thing exists). Is that 
the right way to use it?

I didn't see an answer to this but have been reading a week's worth 
of emails so may have missed it.


Re finding events with no source listed. This currently can't be done 
in Legacy but can be done in GenViewer. It has been requested before 
so maybe version 7.


Re finding people with no sources at all.
Highlight all sources in the Master Source list.
Click Show List
Tag the listed people using an unused tag number.
People without that tag have no sources.

To see who is using a particular source. Highlight that source in the 
Master Source list and click Show List.

not my main database.

So, if you have a birth certificate but the person does not up on any
census (probably because of early death), and you have not located any
death or burial information and are therefore unlikely to *ever* get
two more sources, do you assume they do not exist and leave them out of

not my main database.


I will mention in a memo in my main database that X and Y apparently 
have a child Z for which I have only a birth certificate but child Z 
will not be in the database as an individual.

Yes Kirsten, I'm looking at Elizabeth's book right now.  I have quite a few
ancestors back to the third or fourth generation and I have one, two, three
or sometimes four excellent sources for their names, dates of birth,
marriage, death and burial.  But like the rest of us, I'm sure, I have many,
many that I have names and dates, but they are only clues from online and
other sources.  What I'm trying to say is that multiple sources is a good
problem--I just want to make sure I have them correctly cited.

just one source for any fact.  I believe most good genealogists would 
say you need 3 sources all giving the same data to be absolutely sure of 
a fact.

source to an event. I often do this for names and dob. etc. Just go to 
Assigned Sources (the library books) highlight the event and click "Cite a 
Master Source".

arrived unless you get a reply) but I don't have an answer. I do not know a 
way of doing this (often when I say this someone comes up with an answer - 
here's hoping!), nor will it be easy to do using Access or Open Office as 
far as I can see.

I didn't say not to do it your way, I just said be careful. Knowing how 
indefinite films are handled is part of making a fully informed decision. I 
have seen examples in my FHC of patrons coming in and getting frustrated or 
angry because that film they ordered years ago as an indefinite is no longer 
there. How things are sourced is a very personal decision and I would not 
presume to tell anyone how they "should" do it.  I only wanted to be sure 
readers of this list understood that the extended loans to FHCs are not 
permanent so they could at least consider the ramifications of using the FHC 
vs. the FHL as the repository.


Sourcing is not just for our use, but also for those following in our 
footsteps, perhaps decades later. While it is true that any repository *may* 
make such changes, some repositories will be more prone to change than 
others. That is one of the big problems with using a web site as a source, 
compared to say, the National Archives. My point was that films in a FHC 
will be more unstable in that regard than the FHL, and that that potential 
should be kept in mind. One possible way to cover both bases would be to 
have the FHC as the first part of the entry, but reference the FHL in 
addition, such as Reno Nevada FHC on loan from the FHL yada yada yada.

That's what I do.  Others may have other methods.  I also include the 
repository & date looked up so I know where & when I found it.  If I 
need to go back to the source for some reason, this helps me find it 
quickly. If it's on indefinite loan at a particular FHC, then I list 
that FHC, rather than the Salt Lake Family History Library.

Heritage Quest is the website visited, not the source.  Heritage Quest 
posts existing data, such as censuses and books.  Those are the source.

Any repository may discard, move, or digitize records as they see fit.  
However, if I want to go look up something again, then I know just where 
I found it originally.  If it's local for me at the present time, then I 
may just stop by to view it again.  Otherwise, I'll verify availability 
before a trip.

I would be careful about using the FHC. The word "indefinite" means just 
that. It is not a synonym for "permanent". Family History Centers have been 
instructed to periodically return to the FHL any indefinite films that have 
not been actively used for a period of time (usually 1 year). There is a 
better than even chance that researchers down the road will no longer find 
the film at the same FHC.

Dawn,

I use Gmail for just that reason. Once in while I will delete
something that I can not see where it will ever be of use.

A few years ago when I first inherited an old computer that was apt to
do wierd things/at least to me and had almost no memory someone led me
to gmail. That person should have a halo in my book. I did have one
crash where I lost some information that was in some emails from the
days before I started using gmail. Now all my lists/surnames/locations
and etc have their own folders in my gmail account.

Probably in months to come I will be asking and learning more as I try
to bury myself in
genealogy to prevent worrying myself to death while my son is in Iraq.
This is going to be my way to count down the days. As long as he
passes his final physical on the 22nd.

So look for the beginner questions from me.

Hi Sara, I wanted to respond to your question earlier, but was busy
with the start of school for my kids.  Because I am a source "lumper,"
I have a much easier time editing master sources (only 857 vs.
thousands of individual citations).  Then, for the source detail, I am
usually able to utilize the search and replace tools to help me make
changes.  Of course, there are some that have to be handled
individually, but it hasn't been too bad and it's worth the costs to
get it right in my opinion.

I'm sure there will be a need to tweak sources once again once v7 is
out, but I'm eager for this because I think it's going to help me get
sources into a Mills style format which is what I want.

Now there are many earlier sources where I failed to enter the
accessed date.  Oh well, if I look any of these up again I can use a
current accessed date.  However, some of them will probably not get
updated until I come upon them again.  The closer I am to my direct
lines, the more care I give to formatting and completeness.

Well, I sort of agree with you, but I'm the type who really like to
"color in the lines!"  Also, I subscribe to the APG list and have
already posed a few questions to Ms. Mills about a couple of the
cemetery citation models.  She really does respond quickly and with
much detail!

Everyone likes to say that it's more of an art, but when it gets down
to it, many people on that list will step in and (kindly) say that
there's a better or more correct way than the one I'm currently using.

There are times when I know I'm going to use poetic license on my
sources, but I do want to try to be as true Mills' templates as I know
how.  It's just my own perspective.  I never plan to criticize anyone
else's research as long as I can figure out how to find and review
their source myself.

I'd like to add a comment here too.  I also bought my copy of Mills'
_Evidence Explained_ and started to consider updating all my sources
in Legacy.  However, I quickly decided it's best to wait and see how
Legacy 7's sourcing templates pan out.  I have high hopes!

One problem is that Mills' formulas often embed what I would consider
"citation detail" data in a citation within elements of "master
source" data.

For example, she recommends adding an "accessed date" to web site data
so the reader will know how long ago the site was viewed.  This makes
good sense.  However, she has data on either side of it that I would
want to include in my master source.  Legacy 6 does not allow for
mixing these components for the final output.

Another example which is tricky to implement is sourcing for e-mail
correspondence.  She suggests using the following components in a
first reference note (in this order, and as available): writer,
writer's location, writer's contact information, recipient, item type,
record date, subject line, file, research series, collection,
researcher and contact information.

Currently, I have created a master source called "Personal
Correspondence" and all of the above information is currently listed
in the citation detail for all e-mails I have received over the years.
 I tried to get Legacy 6 to suppress the words "Personal
Correspondence" in the source output so that just the above
information would print, but I couldn't get it to work the way I
wanted.

First I left the words "Personal Correspondence" in the Source List
Name field, but I blanked out the same words in the Title field of the
Master Source.  When I viewed the "Show Source using Print Options"
window, the words "Personal Correspondence" still showed up
(presumably pulling from the Source List Name field since the Title
field was not blank).

Then I typed the word "test" in the Title field and the "test" then
appeared in the "Show Source using Print Options" window in lieu of
"Personal Correspondence" from the Source List Name.

Therefore, it seems that the output for printing defaults to the
Source List Name if the Title field is blank.  I finally gave up and
decided that revamping my sources needed to wait in hopes that Legacy
7's templates will resolve some of these issues.

I realize that Mills wrote her book more with a person publishing on
paper in mind and not as much for the person using a database.
Frankly, I'm sure it's hard to accommodate the needs of both at the
same time!  However, I am trying my best to make it work for both
worlds.

I welcome any thoughts or suggestions on the above example.  In the
mean time, I am happy to wait a couple of months to see what sourcing
goodies Legacy 7 has in store!

I think it was on the laminated 4-page source citations by Mills that she 
also put the name she had searched for in the documentation.  I'm not sure 
why that is necessary if you're including details as to page number, family 
number, and if the name searched is the same as the name found.


And often I find people (e.g., other families) I wasn't even searching for 
anyway.

Here is the reason you need to source where you saw the information. Not all
digital images are equal to the microfilm. At times, tick marks can be lost
when the image is enhanced. Enhancements can also diminish handwriting
strokes therefore altering names. In addition at times the digital image is
the incorrect image. This was the case with Ancestry and some of the WWI
draft cards. The first page was correct however the second page was for a
different individual (this is the page with the person descriptions like
height and build). This mistake is unique to Ancestry.

You should only cite the source you actually viewed. If you viewed a
Heritage Quest census online, then that is your source and your repository.
If you viewed the actual NARA microfilm then you cite that as your source
and you list where you viewed it - your local library, NARA, etc.

for years and haven't been hit by lightning yet.  The full Mills citation
format certainly gives a nice scholarly appearance, but it seems like a lot
of superfluous information--and extra typing.  I'll be interested to see if
someone comes up with a good reason to add all that data.

  I have a family line where the members changed their names on every census.  
I lost them in two census years until I checked Heritage Quest (I had been 
using Ancestry) and I found them right away.  It seems that a transcriber for 
Ancestry thought that "Crull" was "Paulli"  
for one year, and "Coell" for another.  So, for no other reason, I cited 
Heritage Quest because their information was correct and they should get the 
credit.

Funny that this should come up today. It was discussed in an article
in the Ancestry.com newsletter today, and can be found online here:

The author's reasoning had to do with being able to find that database
again that you used to find the digital image.

I know that some images that are at Heritage Quest look better than
those at Ancestry.com, so you should note which was the source. It
will remind you where you saw that image originally. Also you should
list the date that you accessed the source, as census images are being
processed daily to remove the blackened mildew stains that darkened
most microfilm images. This will help you to decide if you should go
back and revisit an image that once was only somewhat legible.

I source my census images in the Legacy Source Detail as (for example):
"Lowell Ward 5, Middlesex, Massachusetts; Roll: M593_628; Page: 254;
Image: 510; dwelling 659, family 779, John Crowley household;
enumerated 14 Jul 1870; digital image, Ancestry.com (accessed 13 Jan
2007)."
My master source is simply "1870 USA Federal Census" (for example).

Anyone who isn't interested in publishing their research to the
general public should feel comfortable with providing enough source
detail to help the next researcher locate the same information you
found. Adding more information that helps you do your research,
though, is always a good idea as it saves time down the road!

I just received my copy of Elizabeth Shown Mills' updated book on sourcing.
I have a question about sourcing things like census records.  In her book
Mills shows how to source a census record from microfilm or from an on-line
resource.  My question is...why does it matter?  If I source the town(ship),
county, state, page #, and family/household # - isn't that sufficient for me
or someone else to located that exact same entry?  What is the significance
of having to type in the Ancestry, Heritage Quest, microfilm info?  I'm
probably missing something really obvious here...and this probably will all
be taken care of when Legacy 7 comes out with their source templates, but

Thank you, Diane!  I've also been reading Mills and wondering the same
thing.  I've used an *abbreviated* version of Evidence! sourcing guidelines
for years and haven't been hit by lightning yet.  The full Mills citation
format certainly gives a nice scholarly appearance, but it seems like a lot
of superfluous information--and extra typing.  I'll be interested to see if
someone comes up with a good reason to add all that data.

I just received my copy of Elizabeth Shown Mills' updated book on sourcing.
I have a question about sourcing things like census records.  In her book
Mills shows how to source a census record from microfilm or from an on-line
resource.  My question is...why does it matter?  If I source the town(ship),
county, state, page #, and family/household # - isn't that sufficient for me
or someone else to located that exact same entry?  What is the significance
of having to type in the Ancestry, Heritage Quest, microfilm info?  I'm
probably missing something really obvious here...and this probably will all
be taken care of when Legacy 7 comes out with their source templates, but

It's all a question of your confidence in the source information. By 
definition, a film is a facsimile copy of some document. An on-line 
resource is generally a transcription of something, and therefore open 
to transcription errors. Of course, if the on-line resource includes 
digital images of documents, then there's no difference.
