[LegacyUG] Problem connecting to the internet

2017-03-26 Thread Brian Lehman

Hello,
All of a sudden my Legacy version 8.0.0.586, wont display "Legacy News"
on the home page
and can't connect to the internet to do an update. Using Windows 10,
previously without any problems.

Would someone have a suggestion as to how to connect to the internet?
Thank you
  Brian Lehman

[LegacyUG] Best way to keep my laptop current.

2013-09-21 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
My main Legacy working database is on my desktop and I restore a
backup to keep my laptop current.
Aside from Media files, I could also transfer the just the .fdb file
between my two computers.
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to restoring a backup to my laptop,
as opposed to just copy/past the .fdb file between the two, which seems
easier?

  Thank you,
  Brian Lehman

Re: [LegacyUG] Best way to keep my laptop current.

2013-09-21 Thread Brian Lehman
Thanks for the replies,
I have my Legacy paths the same on each computer, so media and restores
aren't a problem.
I prefer to do a manual transfer of data between the two, not really
concerned with keeping them synched.
I'm basically interested in just a transfer of changes data, not
settings or customizations, etc.
For speed and simple transfer of data, is it acceptable to just
copy/past the .fdb file between my two computers?

  Thanks again,
Brian

RE: [LegacyUG] Appropriate ancestral town location

2013-06-12 Thread Brian Lehman
Thanks for the replies everyone,
When I write a Location, Mielnica,Borszczów,Galicia,Austria, which
represents the location, pre WW I,
every part of it is appropriate to me, other than Austria, as it didn't
exist, it was the Austrian Empire.
Writing, Mielnica,Borszczów,Galicia,Austrian Empire, just looks wrong
for a location,
matter of opinion, I know, but if Wendy and others have a Location
type such as, Campbelltown (Rongotea from 1895), Manawatu, New Zealand,
may be I need to rethink how I look at my location list.
Thanks again for the input.

SV: [LegacyUG] Surprise during today's webinar

2013-06-07 Thread Brian Lehman
I've been following this thread and while don't usually offer opinions,
I have to say, for me,
Legacy is an excellent genealogy program, I've had Family Tree Maker,
Roots Magic, left both for many reasons.
Legacy does so much that makes genealogy life easier, linking to FS or
Acom is not why I by a program, its to store my data,
I belong to Acom and search all I want at FS.
As long as there are no bugs and the program is functioning correctly, I
have no rush for an update.
I'd rather wait for a release that operates well..and no fee updates are
just icing on the cake.

Others will offer more detailed advice, but I have to say,
One important thing to remember is as your moving scans, DON'T change
the name, Legacy wont find it
and you'll have to relink each scan to each fact its sourced to.

[LegacyUG] Combining sources question.

2013-03-25 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
I am working on cleaning up my source list and am about to combine several.
I want to be sure of something before I proceed.
I have 3 sources for New York births, one of which will be the final source,
I imagine its like combining duplicate locations.
What I'm wondering, is what happens to the source details, will they be
carried over to the new (final) source?
Thanks for the advice,

RE: [LegacyUG] Combining sources question.

2013-03-25 Thread Brian Lehman
I'm using basic sources, and combined 2 sources, each with different
details.
What happened was, and I don't know why, but I wound up with 2 sources
attached to an event,
each with the same name(that I'm happy with) and different details, I
didn't want 2 of the same sources(for different details),
so I tagged the list, went through the sources, and combined the
details, then deleted the extra source.
Thanks to Legacy, that process wasn't that tough.
Take care,
Brian

Re: [LegacyUG] I can't uninstall Legacy

2013-03-24 Thread Brian Lehman
Hi Ron,
So far they have, I've added several scans of records to sources since
the reinstall
and everything is being displayed as a thumbnail.
Oddly, another problem I'm having, that I have long given up on,
continues.
When I open an Individual's screen, periodically it shrinks to its
minimum size.
The fix for this is deleting the Legacy2USR file, then my screen holds
its size...for a while,
it eventually shrinks again and I delete the file again, and the cycle
continues.
I'd hoped the recent new install would resolve this, but it continues.
I've resigned myself, to having my screens shrink every 4 days or so.
Take Care,
Brian

Each time I receive a message Can not open INSTALL.LOG file.
Could someone advise on how to uninstall Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing source thumbnails.

2013-03-21 Thread Brian Lehman
Thanks for the replies,
I knew I would have a tough time explaining this.
I think you have it Ron, you said
The tabs are: Output, Text/Comments, Repository and Pictures. Clicking
the Pictures tab will show the image(s) of the Source.
I'm not seeing the image(s) of the Source. or thumbnail. I always
have though.
What I see is Source Detail Picture, below is a square, that says
Picture.
When I click on the picture square it goes to the Photo gallery and my
scan/picture is there, but not being displayed as a thumbnail.

I don't even know about my other problem but this is what its doing.
after I add a source, copy it to the source clipboard, when I try to
attach it to another Event, a small window comes up that says
No current record, after clicking OK, the source opens and attaches
as usual, but as above, the thumbnail is not visible.

[LegacyUG] Missing source thumbnails.

2013-03-20 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
I've been having a problem for a while concerning the source picture
Thumbnail.
I have the full version and the latest build.
What's happening is, when I open an individuals Source screen
and see the list of assigned sources(with scans), at the bottom, in the
picture tab,
I should see a thumbnail of the attached scan, I don't.
When I click the Source Detail Picture square, the scan is visible in
the picture gallery,
So its there, just not being displayed as a thumbnail.
Another problem that I think is connected with the above, is after I
add a source,
copy it to the source clipboard, when I try to attach it to another Event,
a small window comes up that says No current record, after clicking OK,
the source attaches as usual, but as above, the thumbnail is not visible.
After I shut the program down and start up again,
the thumbnails are there, but after entering a few sources, there gone
again.
All my scans are there upon testing Media paths.
I would appreciate advice on how to resolve this.
Thank you,
Brian Lehman

[LegacyUG] Endless Loop revisited

2013-03-08 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello All,
I have been going over my file, checking suggested MRIN #'s as Endless
Loop messages occur.
I haven't found any misplaces people among the a couples ancestors, that
would cause an Endless loop but I still get the messages.
Thing is, I get the Endless Loop message,**only on Descendants tab,
when I highlight an individual and use
the Go to Father button (on the right) and keep going up the father's
line.
THEN, I get the Endless loop message for a different couple, 4
generations down the line from the couple I have highlighted.
I do NOT get an endless loop message when I follow the same fathers line
in Family view or Pedigree view.
If I get an Endless Loop message in Descendents view, should I get one
also in the Family,Pedigree view?
Could this be a glitch?
Appreciate any insights.

[LegacyUG] I'm getting an Endless Loop message

2013-03-03 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello all,
I am having a problem I've never encountered before. I just entered a
large generational family.
While going through the Descendant tab, I get a pop up, that says:
This marriage has now been processed 6 times. You could be in an
endless loop. Note this MRIN # and check it later. and Warn after 5
encounters. I continue and get the same message, this happens on MRIN
746 and 336. Two messages then continues as normal.
On MRIN 746, is a married couple, Sam and Hannah, they had 8
children, one of which is Elmer,
and Elmer is the MRIN 336. He has no wife but a son.
I've checked all relationships, marriages, children etc for these 2
MRINs, everything looks good,
ran all File Maintenance, and still the problem continues.
I now have no Idea where to check this or how to fix this. I would
appreciate any advice on dealing with an Endless Loop.
Than You,
Brian Lehman

[LegacyUG] I'm getting an Endless Loop message

2013-03-03 Thread Brian Lehman

Well, I did some checking and following the MRIN #s, the ancestry of
each of the couple, converge somewhere back among the generations.
Just to repeat, the problem /only /occurs on the Descendant Tab,
when I hit Go to father,
the message occurs as I scroll up the fathers list.
I also should say What I'm doing is creating a Biblical Tree, written
following relationships found in Genesis,
these relationships were complicated, as biblical people often married
1st or 2nd cousins and share the same ancestry.
My problem occurs with the ancestry of Abraham, the further back I go,
everybody is related to everybody else.
I don't think I'll be able to fix this, through relationship corrections,
so my question is how can I eliminate the endless loop' message?
I've set the warn again in # encounters to the Max 250, but the
message still pops up.
Is there a way to turn off the endless loop' message, on just THIS tree
file and not my other trees?
Thanks again,
Brian

Re: [LegacyUG] How to record patronymic names.

2013-01-20 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello all,
Thanks for the reply's concerning Patronymic names.
Legacy, being the wonderfully versatile program that it is, allows me to
enter any name I want.
My concern in the appearance of the Full name in display and reports,
I don't want to give the impression of a middle or last name when there
is none.
For a name like the ex. Moses Seligmann, who later became Moses Turkheimer,
I'm toying with the idea of using first name: Moses Seligmann; last
name: - Turkheimer.
Producing obviously, Moses Seligmann - Turkheimer.
Not perfect, but keeps the distinct identity, Moses Seligmann, yet gives
the continuity of the last name.
As I said, not perfect, it'll do for now.
Thanks again for the advice,
Brian

[LegacyUG] How to record patronymic names.

2013-01-18 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
I would appreciate suggestions on how to enter a patronymic name.
My ancestors, being Jewish, didn't have last names in Europe until abt 1800.
Before then, people went by their name and their fathers.
Such as Moses Seligmann, born 1757, Germany, Seligmann being Moses father.
Moses Seligmann signed documents as such, and in 1809, he and his family
Adopted the surname Turkheimer,
after that, documents were signed Moses Turkheimer.
How should this name be entered in Legacy?
On the individual information screen, If I enter Moses Seligmann (his
birth name), it looks like every other middle name.
I enter relevant info in notes and events.
How do I properly enter Moses Seligmann, with no last name, and not
looking like a middle name.
Appreciate any and all suggestions.
Take care,
Brian

Since I create an Event to record Birth, death and marriages, and I have

I am searching for individuals for, Event Placecontains - Munzesheim,
that list I search for, Death Date before - 1840.
I don't think I'm searching correctly.
I cant be the first to attempt to search for individuals in a given

wondering how others do their search.

Hello,
I've been trying to search my data base for individuals who were living,

All the individuals I am looking for have birth, death and marriage
dates entered and Munzesheim entered for most events.
I have tried using the search window, with varying parameters,

but the count seems off, some are counted when they shouldn't be and
vice a versa.
I'm hoping someone would advise me.

[LegacyUG] Vanishing burial place.

2012-08-21 Thread Brian Lehman
I'm getting a glitch tonight I've never seen.
I am entering Burial data, beginning in an individuals screen, I create
a custom even called Burial Record,
I enter the data, Date, Place(which is a cemetery) and add appropriate
notes.
I close the burial event screen and then I enter the burial date and
place in the individuals screen,
by right clicking the place memorized locations or place clipboard.Don't
remember what its called.
Then reopen the Burial event and add a source which at times contains a
scan of the grave stone but not always.
I add this source to my custom burial event as well as the Burial source
on an individuals screen.
I close the source screen, and I have the Burial event screen open,(now
the glitch),
when I close the Burial event screen, the already entered Burial Place
disappears,
Yes, just vanishes, I've tried different circumstances with and without
a scan added and its consistent,
and its only with the Burial event in the individuals screen.

Just tried again, created a burial event, NO source added this time,
closed the Burial event and added the burial place to the individual
screen, reopened the Burial event and shut it and again my already
entered Burial place on the individual screen vanished,
I've shut Legacy down and reopened and did a File Maintenance, and the
glitch persists.
This problem only occurs with the Burial event, nothing else.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian Lehman

Hello,
I think I have a problem. I tried to do an uninstall following the given

First I tried to uninstall by using the file in the Legacy folder,
Uninstall Legacy 7.5
(there are also files Uninstall Legacy 7.0 and Uninstall Legacy 7.4).I
might have tried Uninstall Legacy 7.0 first.
It didn't uninstall, I received the message,Can not open Install.Log file.
I then tried to remove it via the control panel, Add/Remove Programs and
got the same message.
I did a restart on my computer and ran the removal process again with
the same results.
I'm running Legacy 7.5.0.191 on Windows 7, 64 bit.
I had nothing else open at the time, and my data base is intact.
Right now, I cant delete the program.
I could really use some help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size

Well I found Legacy listed in the Program list using Revo Uninstaller
and then I uninstalled legacy.
It is no longer listed in the Revo program list or the program list in
the control panel in Add/remove Programs.
However the Legacy folders, files, shortcuts, all of it, is still where
it was and opening, no media links have been broken,
data appears intact but not sure.
Legacy is not listed in any program list but is still operational.
I'm at a total loss as to how to uninstall Legacy.
I do have the original (several years old), Legacy install disk that I
purchased, if that helps.
Please advise,

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size

2012-06-24 Thread Brian Lehman
I took Ron's advice and installed Legacy again and the program was again
appearing in various program lists.
So I found Legacy in Revo Uninstaller and used the Forced Uninstall
feature and successfully removed Legacy,
Then Revo suggested to run a scan to remove the residuals of Legacy
after the uninstall.
Did that and I couldn't find Legacy anywhere. It was gone, finally!
(other than the files and folders that Sherry suggested to keep).
Now I downloaded a new and current copy of Legacy from the website and
restored my data from a back up.
All seems well with my data base and I have to re due some
customizations/personalizations, but not all.
My original problem involved Legacy screens not holding the size I set,
so time will tell if that problem is solved,
but at least I have a clean copy of Legacy and my data base restored.
Thanks to everyone for there advice,
Take Care,
Brian

[LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size

2012-06-20 Thread Brian Lehman

Ok, I've had enough of my Legacy screens reducing after I delete the
Legact2.USR file.
I'm going to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of Legacy.
Problem is I've never done this and a little nervous and could use some
pointers.
I looked for advice on the Legacy pages but couldn't find any info.
Is it as simple as uninstalling the Legacy program and deleting every
remaining file and folder,
then Reinstall from the Legacy page, then restore from the latest backup?
All my scans of records are in the C: LegacyDocs, will they be deleted
then restored with the back up when I delete the program?
What about the many personal settings I have, will they need to be reset
or restored with the back up?
Appreciate any advice,
Take Care,

[LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size

2012-06-18 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
Several months ago, I posted a question about a problem I was having
with Legacy window screens not holding their size.
The fix for this was suggested to delete the Legacy2.USR file in the
Legacy folder.
Deleting this file does indeed cause the Legacy screens to keep the
sizes I set..for a period of time.
Sometimes for an hour, or the next day, my screens all reduce to a
consistent small size, almost like a default size.
I'm not doing anything unusual, just routine Legacy data entry.
I run frequent file maintenance, frequent meaning sometimes up to 4-8
times a day, depending how Legacy is performing.
Could running file maintenance to often be a problem?
The jpg's I have attached, some are about 1-2 MB, most are smaller, some
get in that are quite large,
with these large jpg's, I've noticed that the screens take longer to
open and display,
could large jpg's cause all the screens to forget their sizes and revert
to a smaller default?
I'd appreciate any advise,
Thanks and take care,
Brian Lehman

Re: [LegacyUG] Syncing my Legacy file with the Families app

2012-04-27 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
I am still trying to sync(update) the data in Families with my desk top
file.
I previously was able to have my file display in Families and as far as
I know,it worked fine.
I ran into problems/questions updating my Family file,
and thanks to the suggestions here,I was able to update Families. But I
am not sure if I am understanding it correctly.
My question, Is the sync(update) process the same as the initial
loading process for a new file?
except that I am just replacing an older .sqlite file, with an current
.sqlite?
Essentially, writing a new file each time I want to update Families?
I'm not complaining but I was looking for a streamlined sync process,
not a new load each time.
Did I miss something, I just want to know that I am doing this correctly.

Thanks for the further assistance,
Brian

[LegacyUG] Do you attach a census image for every single source?

2012-04-18 Thread Brian Lehman
What I do is attach the census image to everyone in the family.
I record the data in an appropriate entry, address, birth, marriage, place.
Then I create events for other data mentioned like immigration,
naturalization,occupation.
I'm wrestling with the idea of transcribing all the data for each person
mentioned, but with 900+ people,I'm a little reluctant.

[LegacyUG] Advanced sourcing help needed.

2012-03-31 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
Is this possible?
I have an event I created called Ancestral town, added to about 200
people, all with the same source.
I am trying to assign abt 80 of them a different source, that's already
in the source list, while keeping it in the same event.
I have the 80 people tagged on 1 that I want to change and looked at
advanced sourcing.
I see how to assign a source to people on a tag, for standard data,
birth,marriage,death,etc.
But didnt see a way to change a source to an event I created.
Never used advanced sourcing before. Am I missing something?
Basically, I want to change/overwrite a source attached to an event I
created to 80 people in a tag list.
Is it even possible to just add a source attached to an event I
created to 80 people in a tag list, and I'll manually remove the old source?
Am I hoping for to much? Can this be done another way?

I'd appreciate any help offered
Thanks and take care,
Brian

[LegacyUG] Re: Merging a gedcom into Legacy

2012-02-28 Thread Brian Lehman
I'm doing that right know.
I down loaded a GEDCOM from Acom and entered it into Legacy, save with a
different name so no confusion.
The data in the Acom ged was very different than what I wanted in my
Legacy file,
so I could/didn't want to do a merge.
What I am doing is, following the sources in the Acom Legacy file,
tagging them, say New York City births,
then with both my main Legacy file and the Acom file open in split
windows,I follow the tags in Acom,
then go the the same person in my main Legacy tree, then open the Acom
tree online and find the person and the record I want to transfer.
Then copy from online Acom and enter the data into my main Legacy file.
Tedious, but I'm finding the records I added to my online Acom tree and
entering them into my main Legacy file.
Good luck and take care.

2012-02-28 Thread Brian Lehman
When I opened the Acom gedcom in Legacy, there wasn't much I wanted to merge.
That's why I just use the gedcom to find what sources/documents are
attached to a person in the Acom gedcom,
and take the data from Acom online and enter it directly, the way I want
into my Legacy file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources not copying to clipboard.

2012-02-19 Thread Brian Lehman
Hi Brian,
What I am doing is:
I add an event Social Security Death Index, then add the data to the
notes.
Then add a pre existing and long used source Social Security Death
Index to the event and add source details.
Then in the source window, while the SSDI source is highlighted, click
the copy to source clipboard button,
then click overwrite existing source, then go to the fact where I want
to place it, say Death.
Then click add clipboard source to current event,
and I get a screen that says No master source has been selected.
I clearly copied the original source with details to the clipboard but
it is not being saved with the details entered.
What is added is the SSDI source with no details.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
brian

[LegacyUG] Sourcing Naturalization records

2012-02-12 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
I am wondering how others source naturalization records.
There are frequently several pages to an individual's record,
The petition for naturalization, declaration of intentions, oath, witness
statement, the certificate itself etc.
All from many different places throughout the U.S.
Now I am creating an event called Naturalization and adding each
document as a source separately.
So I have up to 5 documents added to the Naturalization event and frankly,
a source for each document is getting quite confusing and redundant.
Example: declaration of intentions from New York,
Texas,California,Louisiana,Washington.
and the same for the other naturalization documents.
I understand each location has its own unique source data
Would it be better or typical to combine each document into one .jpg and
creating one source,
Eastern District Court of New York Naturalization Records
rather than
Petition for Naturalizations of Eastern District Court of New York
Naturalization Records
Declaration of Intentions of Eastern District Court of New York
Naturalization Records
Oath and Allegiance of Eastern District Court of New York
Naturalization Records
then the same for the Southern District, and the others states.

I understand its a personal preference, how do others handle this.
Thanks for the advice,
Brian

Re: [LegacyUG] Correct file path for media

2012-01-21 Thread Brian Lehman
I save my backups and a copy of my entire Legacy folder to an external
hard drive. So I am not really concerned with losing anything.
The file path where I keep my scans and the default location for my
Document files are
C:\Legacy\Docs\Lehman Family Docs\ (subfolders for Birth,Death,Census, etc.)
Honestly, I might have created the sub folder Docs in the main Legacy
folder, not sure.
I just tested the linking of my scans and legacy is still trying to
first look in the Data folder.
Can/should this be reset somewhere to first look in
C:\Legacy\Docs\Lehman Family Docs\ ?
I do realize that when the path is corrected, I need to link each sub
folder for legacy to find and automatically link each scan.

Ron, you mentioned, location paths, especially that for your document
files, are correct what is legacy correct?

Continued thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Correct file path for media

2012-01-21 Thread Brian Lehman
Please bare with me,
In current list of multimedia locations, I combined duplicates(weren't
any) and purged unused.

My Default location of Family Files: C:\Legacy\Data
My default Locations are now:
Pictures: C:\Legacy\Pictures\
Sounds: C:\Legacy\Sounds\
Video: C:\Legacy\
Documents: C:\Legacy\Docs\

All my scans are kept in C:\Legacy\Docs\Lehman Family docs\(subfolders).

In Launch there are options for web browser, word processor, text editor
and adobe reader,
all of which are blank and always have been. I don't think any of these
will help my problem.

When I try to relink a question mark it is still trying to first look in
the Data folder. Should it?
And still,when I relink a birth record scan(source), it still doesn't
relink to the other sources that this scan is attached to.
I believe it should, after relinking one scan, relink everything is that
folder.
Is there any other info you need to help me out?
May be it would help if you told me the path of your scans of vitals etc.

So to get my scans to load automatically, without a question mark process
everywhere a scan is attached.
Should I move my Lehman Family docs folder into the Data file as you
described, then relink a scan per folder?
I just want Legacy to relink everything in a folder so I don't have to relink
each source a scan is attached to.
I am not afraid to relink my scans as I have only 10 folders and if I link 1
scan, they should all link.Hopefully!

Mike,
My scans are in the same place they have been,I am changing the name.
In a persons source list, I have say marriage cert attached in the
sources for name,birth,marriage.
Then I change the name on the scan itself, to John Smith marriage cert,
I get a question mark,(understandably).
I then relink the newly named source in Birth, but name and marriage are
still blank.

Oh boy, do I feel stupid, just realized, Legacy is looking for the same
name
and if I change it, how is Legacy supposed to know the name in each
place I have it added as a source!

I apologize to everybody for wasting there time, Ron and Mike, and thank
you both for your efforts and patients!
Guess my father was right about me being thick as Jersey mud!
Take care,

Years ago, I went through several Legacy installs and installed it in
the wrong place, since corrected.

My problem is that in the Legacy folder, C: Legacy, I have the usual
folders,
Backgrind, Backups,books,ColorSchemes,Common
files,Data,Dictionaries,Docs,FamilySearch,forms,Geo,Interview,
Legacyhome,LegacyCharting7,Passage
Express,Pictures,sounds,temp,timelines,TreeImages,Video,videos,web,webpics.

And many other files that don't open,I think belong in a sub folder.
That I would like to clean up and place properly.
Such as (foreign language).trn, ,dbm, and many .usr files.
Problem is I don't know if these files belong in the main Legacy folder
or in a sub folder.

Example, the (foreign language).trn files MIGHT belong in the Common
FilesPubCenterExamples because
it has folders matching the language of the (foreign language).trn.
Or maybe everything belongs in the main Legacy folder.

Is there a list somewhere that would tell me where these files belong
and will moving the create problems?
Thanks for the advice,
take care,
Brian

Boy,that was close, Thanks for the info!
The only things I deleted were Text Document in notepad.
Things like: NameSplittingRules, Missing docs,RINLog, and pages
referring to old trees that have been deleted for a while.
And error logs, I assume notepad documents are ALL OK to delete, Legacy
will add them as needed,is this correct?
Thanks again and take care,

[LegacyUG] Correct file path for media

2012-01-20 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
Simple question: what should be the file path where I keep media such
are scans of vital records, census etc used in sources.
I dont have sound or video.
Currently my path is C:\Legacy\Docs..
but when I have to relink a scan that displays a question mark of a
missing file,it opens the Data folder,
then when I relink the scan,I find I have to relink ALL sources and
people this particular scan is attached to.
Thanks and take care,

Setting up the search string is confusing me.
I would appreciate advise on setting this up properly.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for responding so quickly,
After I find a person on a web site, do I just copy the search
string,substituting in the string,
for the first last name, birth date, death date with [Firstname]
[Surname] [Birthyear] [Deathyear] ?
I am interested in Find a Grave and other specialized sites:
italiangen.org, jri-poland.org. and others.
Ancestry.com, familysearch.org are already loaded in the search.
Thanks again for the advise,

Re: [LegacyUG] Creating a custom internet search

2012-01-12 Thread Brian Lehman
Thanks Ron,
That did it! For a site like italiangen.org, which is and index of New
York City vital records, you select the borough to search,
I noticed that I have to create a separate search for each borough.
Other web sites parameters are more defined thus more difficult to set
up a custom search.
But you helped me understand the basics.
Many thanks and take care,

I'm still wrestling with if and how to source the relationship if it is
biological.
So am I.
I feel I need to source some families, to prove the children are related to

And that I will do by making the children biological and adding a source, birth

I would appreciate hearing if there's another way to source the relationship.

Brian,
Thanks for the reply and please bare with me, I'm confused.
In the individuals assigned source window under father rel: and Mother
rel:,
I have added the source,a birth certificate.
Are you saying I should also, in the children's settings window
select birth for Mother/Father relationship to have the parents names
properly sourced
or should I be working with the child status?

Or simpler, what is the process to properly source a persons parents
names when you have documents to prove it ?
Thanks for your patients.

Let me see if I understand this,
It is not necessary to specify Biological or mother/father

In families where parents have a different last name from the children,
I do want to source the evidence,so I would/should enter Biological for
mother/father relationship with a source document?

One of my New Year resolutions is to add sources for everyone in my data
base.
I have all census,Pass list,Natz records and vital records entered as an
event.
Now I wish to add these documents as a source for parents
relationship(among other facts).
Such as a census record to prove who a child's parents are.
I have @1700 people in my Data base and have sourced the Father,Mother
Rel: for about half.
Using the Search window to find missing Father,Mother Rel:,
I can't seem to find the right Search parameters to find who is missing
a source for Father,Mother Rel:.
I should be getting a list of several hundred individuals, so far only
@10 show up.
I've tried searching for missing sources for relationship to
father, mother, but it doesn't produce the list I want.
I would appreciate help in creating this list of missing Father,Mother
Rel: sources.

Thanks for the reply,

Selecting SearchFindMissing Sources and checking the boxes only for
Relationship to Father and Relationship to Mother and for Only one or
more of the selected fields ... should give you the result you want. If
it's not already selected, make sure you check Clear List before this
search.

That is how I am searching. I dont think it would but, would it matter if
I have other search parameters in the
detailed search window? I can't remove those. Everything else is cleared.
Double checked you suggestion and still getting the same minimal results.

I am looking at an individuals assigned source window.
It lists Name,Birth,death,burial,notes,research,medical,death cause,
never married,married,had no children,child status,did not

And whatever other events I have added.
If I have parents for the individual, it also lists father rel: and
Mother rel:,
That is where I am adding the source for the parents names.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy freezes and flickers.

2011-08-21 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
Thanks for the replies, may be I can explain this better.
I am using the split screen view, opening the same family file in both
but viewing different people.
In one file (person), I am opening all the screens to get to and view
how I wrote the source details. Not copying/pasting anything.
I then close all the screens in that file, then open the other file and
go to the same person and hand type the source data I want.
No screens are left open as you can't do anything else without closing
all the screens.
I should also say, this flickering is not the usual flickering that
occurs as screens opens.
My problem flickering, is just the icons and the program freezes.
And it doesn't happen all the time, but 5 times last week.
One time it froze, I had to shut down with task manager, restarted and
did a complete file maintenance, shut it down again, normally.
Then opened it up again and went to exactly the same split screens and
did the same thing and it froze again!
I don't know what to do, reload the program, or the recent update?
Is anybody else experiencing this?

[LegacyUG] Legacy freezes and flickers.

2011-08-20 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello,
I have been having a problem with my Legacy program. I am running the
latest version, 7.5.0.112, on windows 7.
I've never had any problems before with Legacy, this is the first, and
it was an issue before the latest update.
It seems, when I have two files open, actually the same file in two
windows, and entering data in only one, not copying/pasting,merging or
combining anything,
just comparing and opening event/source windows in each but typing in one.
The program freezes and the icons flicker, then nothing works and have
to shut it down with the PC's task manager.
I haven't noticed loss of date, even what I was just working on.
I've ran the file maintenance, check/repair,compact and master list
clean up, both before and after the shut down on several occasions,
and still the problem persists.
I'm wondering if anyone else noticed this and would appreciate any
advise to fix it.
Thank you for your help,
Brian
