Re: [LegacyUG] Updating to Version 10

2024-06-13 Thread Leon Chapman
Wes:

I would suggest you go back to Legacy 9 with your backup database and do the
File > Maintenance on your database.
If it finds errors in Legacy 9, then correct them and do another File >
Maintenance.

If no errors, then backup that file and copy it to the Legacy 10 Documents/
Legacy Family Tree/Data area and try to open that in Legacy 10.

I am trying to update to version 10 but am encountering and issue with
my database. I tried to run a File > File Maintenance > check/repair on
the file but get a message with Error 91Error rebuilding indexs. With
block variable not set.

The solution is to do a file maint which, of course, raises this issue.

I have restored from the previous back up and no joy.

Any ideas.

Apologies if this is not so much a Legacy matter as a Windows one.

A little while ago when genealogy was taking a brief respite, I unpinned
the Legacy icon from my Windows 11 taskbar but pinned it to what is
probably called the Windows Start menu. Ever since, when I open Legacy
the icon shows on the taskbar as plain white "sheet of paper with top
right corner folded down".

Does anyone know how I can get the proper icon to appear when Legacy is
open?

Re: [LegacyUG] Media - Picture File Extension

2022-10-16 Thread Leon Chapman
Change your settings in iPhone to JPG. Makes life a lot simpler. Storage on
iPhone is cheap - $1/mo fo 50 GB storage in iCloud.

If you don’t want to do that, then get a photo program that converts Apple
format to Jpg and do that for every photo you take and want to use in Legacy.
That’s a pain and requires lots of time and fiddling with file formats, saving
files, creating folders, etc.

Good luck!

Re: [LegacyUG] Collections of private papers

2019-09-14 Thread Leon Chapman
Try using the Basic Source. You can have the following:
Source List Name: Source title that you see in index of sources
Type: Book, Deed, Poem, etc
Author: whoever
Title: Source title that prints in reports (normally, the same as Source List
Name)
Publication Facts: Enter any text you want here – your poems.
Record Date: your record date or the date of source/event

Using the TABs, you can also add Text of Source, Comments, Repository and Media.
All of these Source fields are free form text fields, so you can enter anything
you like to tailor your source.

Another thing you could possible use is Stories for an individual. If a person
wrote a poem, then you can document that using a Story for each poem with a
Title, a date, a place and the story, and a picture if you have one.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Collections of private papers

I am currently trying to convert my genealogy files from another software base,
and find that it can be rather difficult. This note addresses one of the
problems.

I have access to collections of materials relative to my research. These fall
into two broad categories:

1. An individual that I am researching has accumulated a number of items
(prayer cards for other individuals, wedding invitations, etc.) that I would
like to reference in my reports.
2. Some third party (like a historical society, genealogical society or a
professional genealogist) has accumulated materials of this sort, and I have
access to those materials. For example, there may be a clipping file that does
not identify the original newspaper from which the clippings come.

If I had access to the template mechanism in Legacy, I could image that I could
create an appropriate “Private Papers” source type, and get the right thing. I
have tried to figure out some way to bend one of the standard forms to deal
with type 1 collections, which are more pressing at this point. I thought
briefly that I could say that the collection was actually a “Letter,” but that
doesn’t work because the mechanism doesn’t seem to handle detail references
correctly.

To make it clear what is going on, I have in my ABC collection a prayer card
for John Smith that bears the date 17 Jan 1954. If I make ABC a “Letter,”
generated by Arnold B. Chester, call it “Document Collection” and put the
prayer card info in the “Notes” part of the reference and say include that in
the report, I get a first footnote that looks like:

Arnold B. Chester Document Collection  prayer card 17 Jan 1954,
John Smith, held by Woznick.

The second reference is then.

    Arnold B. Chester.

The prayer card, its date, and anything else it might say has vanished.

I don’t want to create a separate source for each of these items. Even if I
did, I am not sure what kind of source they might be.

Any suggestions?

Try using the search capability. You can search for FS hints, MyHeritage
hints, etc. once you create a search list you can print it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Anyone know of a quick way to duplicate an individual?

2019-06-02 Thread Leon Chapman
If you export to a GEDCom file, you will most likely loose Legacy information,
since the standard is about 25 years old and does not fully support the modern
programs. Export to a new Legacy file ensures all the individuals information
is maintained.

Re: [LegacyUG] Anyone know of a quick way to duplicate an individual?

2019-06-02 Thread Leon Chapman
Here is a process that would work:
1. Untag everyone in your DB
2. Use Tag 1 to tag only the individual you want to duplicate.
3. Export the Tag 1 person to a Legacy file.
4. Open Legacy file with 1 person you exported and rename the person or make
any other changes you want.
5. Open your original DB and import the 1 person DB with the newly renamed
person to your DB.
6. You can then link this person up with a family as needed.

Hi,

I've been doing a lot of intense updates recently trawling probate records.
One thing I'd love to be able to do quickly when having to split current
information stored against 1 person into 2 separate people (same name, just
a new RIN) is duplicate my current individual record...  I looked for any
such feature but could not find anything.  Any others know how to do this?

Thanks so much,

Hello All

I  must mention that while attempting to resolve the problem below I kept
getting a message to “Re-set relationships .. “ but as I did not know how
to do this (even checked Help index)and attempted to resolve the problem myself.

I was working in my Legacy program and added two people John, a son of Thomas.
I then added Thomas and included his wife Margery.

Unfortunately  realised that I really only needed to enter Thomas and his wife.
I deleted the son John and realised I would have to add Thomas to the correct
John.

Unfortunately again I added Thomas but his wife did not add and I added Thomas
again.

I now have three Thomas’ with three different MRIN and the original Thomas is
not able to be added.

I am not sure I have explained this well enough and I apologise for any
confusion.

This diagram may be clearer.

John --- John Thomas    The bold John was incorrect so I deleted it,
however I had previously added his parents but could not see Thomas and his
wife.

I entered Thomas twice more after that (obviously not thinking straight)
without his wife and now have three x Thomas in the MRIN

Thomas & Margery MRIN  1371 (the original and correct parents and entry)

Thomas MRIN 3319

Thomas MRIN 3339

Yours sincerely

Check your version under the Legacy Home Tab to make sure you have the above

Thanks, Michele. I've tried the four steps, carefully, but no luck; on the
first line of the report, for the Husband and the Wife, the first line still
is 'AKA'; it was un-checked when I arrived at the 'Include' tab. I tried to
check it; shut down the program; re-opened it; followed the four steps you
prescribed and unchecked the alternate names box; New report appeared the
same as the previous report. Is there anything else I could try? Thanks
again for your help.

Subject: [LegacyUG] child - Parent linking

Hello

I an trying to figure out the following issue in Legacy

I have a couple that were married and had no children.
They divorced
The mother had a child by another man, but I do not want to show the father.
Each time I run my Descendants list it shows the child as a child of the
marriage.
I am unable to disassociate the child from the marriage.
Removing the child and changing the marriage to “This couple has no Children”
and then adding the child back in does not work.
It again shows the child as being born to the parents of the marriage.

Any ideas of how to get around this?

Thank You

Re: [LegacyUG] Installing & Running Legacy using Parallels v14.0.0

2018-08-30 Thread Leon Chapman
You need to run Windows in the isolated mode from the Mac side. Then, the file
locations for Legacy are just like a standard Windows only machine.

If you do not isolate Windows from the Mac side, Legacy will try to find files
on a network and you will have problems.

Re: [LegacyUG] Parallels v14 will not install Legacy Family Tree

2018-08-30 Thread Leon Chapman
Qwen:

Here is my latest news on Parallels 14 and the install process:

Ok, I have a new update on the Legacy 9 install on Parallels 14.

On my iMac which did not have Legacy 9 GR or Legacy 9 Beta installed --

I downgraded from Parallels 14 to 13.3.2 – you just download their install
file for v13.3.2 and reinstall over v14.

Using Parallels 13.3.2:
1. I installed Legacy GR - 9.0.0.226
a. It again stopped about 92% thru the install process and the process
became unresponsive
b. I left the installer process open for about 10 minutes, and it finally
finished the install.
c. Legacy 9 GR is running just fine under Parallels 14.0.0.

Next, I reinstalled Parallels 14.0.0 from scratch over Parallels 13.3.2
1. I then installed the Legacy Beta – 9.0.0.253
a. The install went perfect – no delays during install
b. Legacy Beta 9.0.0.253 is running just fine.

I then went to my MacBook Pro – It had Parallels 13.3.2 installed and had
Legacy Beta installed.
1. I upgraded to Parallels 14.0.0
2. This Windows VM already had Legacy 9 Beta 9.0.0.253 installed
3. Legacy is running just fine.

Bottom line, it is ok for everyone to install Parallels 14.0.0 if they
choose.
Legacy should install and run just fine, just give it some time to finish
the install process if it stops during the install.

Another side note: Be sure to Isolate Windows from the Mac or you will have
problems with file locations that act like you are running Legacy on a
network and it cannot find file locations. Here is how to Isolate Windows
from Mac to exclude Mac OS X influence:

(Virtual Machine > Configure… > Options > Security > check on Isolate Mac
from Windows)I

If you have problems, here is a Parallels Help page:
https://kb.parallels.com/112983

Good luck with using Parallels 14.0.0 on the Mac!

[LegacyUG] Parallels v14 will not install Legacy Family Tree

2018-08-29 Thread Leon Chapman
Just a heads up on upgrading to Parallels 14 on your Mac:

I upgraded my iMac Windows 10 virtual machine from Parallels v13.3.2 to v14.0.0.
Legacy Family Tree will not install in Parallels V14.0.0 in Windows 10.

I would strongly advise not upgrading to Parallels 14 if you want to run Legacy
Family Tree in Windows 10.

I am going to downgrade back to Parallels 13.3.2 so I can run Legacy Family
Tree on my iMac.

Your mileage might vary, but mine is at 0 for Parallels 14.

Nope, u cannot do that. A PDF file cannot be printed in any reports.

Copy the text from the PDF file and paste it into Notes or Stories for the
individual. Both of those print.

Re: [LegacyUG] Book Publishing - Ancestor Book, just beginning

2018-07-24 Thread Leon Chapman
I would suggest that you try a few of Legacy reports and see if any of those
can be used. I would recommend using only about 3 - 4 generations to see what
the output will look like.

Recommend you try Ancestor Book, Ancestors chart, family group sheet,
chronology report with various timeline (wars, presidents), family picture tree
(4 gen), migration report, origins report, scrapbook, and a Descendant Book
report.

If some of those work for you, then you can combine the reports in the
Publishing Center and organize your book chapters in the Publisher.

Legacy does and excellent job of sourcing and Foot Noting as well as location
and indexing your reports.

You have options when writing a book to either do Ancestors or Descendants. I
have found it best to write the book as Descendants of a few keep Ancestors
alone parents or grandparents lines. You can so a multiple descendant book
that works great in the Publisher along with other chapters included.

I have written 5 genealogy books of over 300 pages and published as a hard
bound cover. If you are interested, I have an outline of how to publish a book
using Legacy.

Good luck!

Re: [LegacyUG] Run Legacy over Google

2018-01-22 Thread Leon Chapman
One of the problems you may have is dealing with syncing to the cloud
(Google Drive).
If the files do not have time to sync when you go between Stations A & B,
then you may get corrupted files and funny file names may be created.
I am not sure google drive handles and how quick it syncs files.

What you have set up looks correct. I think the problems is with the
syncing.
I use DropBox for my cloud sharing of Legacy files. It works fine unless i
open a file too quickly from another computer.

Good luck with your issues.

There was a breach of Ancestry.com

You will want to change your PW on Ancestry.com and

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Windows 10 on iMac

2017-12-26 Thread Leon Chapman
I would point you to the following URL for details on how to install
Windows 10 using Boot Camp.
You will ultimately need to purchase a Windows 10 key (about $99), but you
can install without one and it will bug you about an illegal copy and my
not accept upgrades until you buy a key.

https://9to5mac.com/2017/01/23/how-to-install-windows-10-mac-boot-camp-assistant-partition-video/

I prefer to use Parallels or VMWare and then install Windows 10 in their
environment rather than Boot Camp.
Boot Camp requires you to reboot your system each time you want to change
from Mac OS to Windows.
Using Parallels or VMWare, you just do a 3 finger swipe on your track pad
and you go from Mac OS to Windows in a few seconds rather than wait several
minutes for the operating system to boot up.

At this point in time, I prefer Parallels over VMWare. The latest version
is Parallels Desktop 13 and sells for $79.99.
Here is a link to their site:

https://www.parallels.com/eu/

You can try it for free for 14 days - you will need a Windows 10 key to
load Windows under Parallels.

You might look for a Window 10 Pro Key on eBay. Normally sells for around
$10-15.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR5.TRC1.A0.H0.Xwindow+10+key.TRS0&_nkw=window+10+key&_sacat=0

Good luck.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-14 Thread Leon Chapman
Ruth:

Here is more information from the Help file about the Wording Options Tab.

*Wording Options Tab*

*Family View Labels*

Choose the labels you would like to use when displaying this marriage
couple. The default labels are *Husb* and *Wife*.

*Default Report Phrases if this is the First Marriage*

The traditional (and default) phrase used when printing reports is "
*married*". John married Sarah..., or Sarah married John If the *This
couple did not marry *option has been selected, the default changes to "*had
a relationship with*". John had a relationship with Sarah..., or Sarah had
a relationship with John (The defaults for these two phrases can be
changed globally in the *Options > Customize > View > Default Family View
Labels and Report Wording *box.) If you want to change the phrase for this
marriage/partnership only, you can type a new phrase into the box. Keep in
mind that this phrase is used to build the beginning of a sentence. The
sentence will then have the date and place added to it. John married Sarah
on 12 Dec 1888 in London, England...

*Overriding the Report Phrases*

If you would like to completely change the narrative wording that Legacy
normally uses to construct a sentence for a report, you can change it to
anything you want to. Whereas the default wording above automatically
inserts the first name of each of the spouses/partners, these new override
phrases does not. You must include the names in the phrase. This gives
you the option to modify the names and to change the order of the
parts. Johnny
took Sarah as his wife ... or Johnny and Sarah got married ... or John
married his high school sweetheart Sarah Again, this is the beginning
portion of a sentence that will have the date and location added to it, so
keep this in mind.

You must construct two versions of the sentence, one describing the
husband's first marriage (or partnership) and the other describing the
wife's first marriage.

*Default Report Phrases if this is Not the First Marriage*

Similar to the wording for a first marriage, the default phrase used for a
second or later marriage is "*next married*" or "*next had a relationship
with*". John next married Sarah..., or Sarah next had a relationship with
John If you want to change the phrase for this subsequent
marriage/partnership only, you can type a new phrase into the box.

*Overriding the Report Phrases*

Just as with the first marriage, you can enter your own wording for later
marriages. Later in his life Johnny got remarried to Ruth ... or Several
years after her divorce, Sarah met a man named Alfred and they were married
Again, this is the beginning portion of a sentence that will have the
date and location added to it, so don't put a period at the end.

Again, as with the first marriage, you must construct two versions of the
sentence.

*Other word substitutes*

You can also change the terms *Spouse* and *Marriage* to other words that
will be used in various reporting situations.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report

2017-11-14 Thread Leon Chapman
Ruth:

Go to the person that has no wife and click on their Marriage information
below the two people in family view.
In this window, select the Tab at top that says: Wording Options.

You can change the wording options to whatever you like there for that
couple.
Try a few things and print/preview a report and see what your changes look
like in the report.

You will need to do this for each family you do not have a spouse for if
you want the wording changed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Unspecified 'event'

2017-10-25 Thread Leon Chapman
Geoff:

It's a problem. It has been requested to add a search feature so you could
locate those people with an Unspecified source. So far, that feature has
not been implemented.

The unspecified sourcing used to come from FamilySearch trees when you
transferred an individual to your DB.
That has been fixed and the LDS sourcing does not attach a source to the
unspecified source field.

I do not know of a way to even locate the people that have the source in
the unspecified field.

There are ways to do it in MS Access if you had the skills to tackle that
problem. You would want to backup your DB before trying anything in MS
Access.

I do not have a solution for you.

It would be good to formally submit this as a new search feature for Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup my Legacy media files?

2017-09-30 Thread Leon Chapman
Here is an answer to basic backup.

1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File
2. At bottom right, Click HELP >Show Help Topic. or watch a video.

This HELP completely talks about backups and the Legacy Cloud backup in 5
steps.

*OneDrive Backup*
1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File
2. Select Backup to My Computer (Family File & Media Files)
3. Click CHANGE to far right of Family File
4. A windows file manger will open and you can then locate your OneDrive
folder (e.g: \OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ ) and save the Legacy Backupup
files in that folder. If you also have the Media Files selected for
backup, Legacy asks if you want to change the Media backup location to the
same as Family File and the answer would be YES. Note: I would suggest
you create the \OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ folder before starting steps 1-4
above - see step 3 below.

*Questions about OneDrive:*
1. Do I have OneDrive on my system?
 A. Yes, If you have Windows 8.1 or 10, it was automatically installed
 B. Yes, if you have Office 360 installed

2. How can I see if OneDrive is installed?
 A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon at
bottom in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side window a
folder called OneDrive and maybe a few subfolders if you have created any.

3. How do I create a new subfolder under OneDrive called:
\OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ ?
 A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon at
bottom in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side window a
folder called OneDrive
 B. Right Click on OneDrive >New >Folder
 C. Type the new folder name as: Legacy Backup
 D. Hit return. You should see the new folder under OneDrive in your
screen on left side.

4. What if I don't have a OneDrive Subfolder or OneDrive is not installed?
 A. You will need to download OneDrive from Microsoft and create an
account.
 B. Here is the link to do that:

https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-gb/support/

Enjoy!

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing with Legacy tools

2017-09-27 Thread Leon Chapman
The best way to learn the Publisher is to try it. Add some chapters
(reports), and do a preview and maybe create a PDF file for review. Printing
would only be done for a final version that you are happy with.

Some tips:
Chapters to include -
1. Introduction - explains what is in report to include major ancestors, an
overview of major family names
2. Dedication chapter
3. Descendant book report chapter - from oldest ancestor
4. Descendant chart chapter from oldest ancestor
5. Ancestor chart chapter from youngest person
6. Ancestor book report from youngest person
7. 4 or 5 chapters of grandparents & parents
 A. Family group sheet for GPa
 B. Chronology of key GPa
 C. ScrapBook of pictures for GPa
 D. Descendant chart
Repeat chapters using 7 above for GPa’s/Family on both sides
8. 2 column index at end
9. 2 column location index at end

If u do this for one primary family, you will probably create a couple hundred
pages book.

I have published 5 books like this with color hardback cover, 8x10, that had
300-800 pages in the book.

I would recommend you consider www.hula.com for publishing your book. A 300 pg
book will cost about $30-50 a FPS that is very reasonable price.

I have a more detail guide to publishing a book. Send me an email if you would
need more details.

Microsoft pulled the plug on a Bing API that was being used.
The developers r working on a replacement to fix the map issue. It may take a
while.

Re: [LegacyUG] HELP WITH PICTURES

2017-09-07 Thread Leon Chapman
Gary:

You have about 4 steps to get your iPad pictures into Legacy.

I will outline the process.
1. Transfer your iPad pictures to your PC
2. Edit / Resize your pictures (e.g., 400x400 pixels)
3. Copy / Move resized pictures to your Legacy picture file folder (e.g.,
Windows 10 --- c:/Documents/Legacy Family Tree/Media/)
4. Attach 1 file to Individual and/or 1 file to an Event for individual or a
marriage event for a family picture. This events picture is the only way to be
able to print the picture in a report. When the pictures r printed in a
report, they normally are only 1.5" high by 1" wide. For a scrapbook, I would
print either 4 or 6 per page and this is why you want to resize / crop the
picture used in Legacy to something like 400x400, 400x300, . you need to
experiment with the scrapbook report and see how many you want to print on a
page and size all of your pictures so that will work correctly.

Here are some other tips but will not go into depth of how to.
Step 1 above:
Several ways to transfer iPad pictures to PC --
- Use iTunes and connect iPad
- use a USB stick like sans to copy and transfer
- use an app like PhotoSync on iPad and PC on same Wi-Fi ( this is my favorite
way)
- use a cloud service like DropBox

Step 2 a I like FastStone Image Viewer. It is free and simple to use for
resizing pictures. About 10 minutes and you r good to go.

Anyway, that's a start. The devil is always in the details.

Reading your information clouds the issue more. Your info Quotes 3 different
subscriptions:
1. Premium
2. Premium Plus
3. Data subscription

On my account, I see a Site and a Data subscription which might lead me to 4
different subscriptions

The Legacy offer for $103/yr says that it is a Complete membership price. So,
does Complete mean all four membership at noted above?

Re: [LegacyUG] Reports/Publishing Center

2017-08-20 Thread Leon Chapman
Gene:
Normally, I would think you would only want to print one set of sources at
the end of all chapters rather than after each chapter.
In the Publishing Center form where you have selected the 3 chapters to
include, there is a Tab at top of window called "Additional". Click on
that Tab and then near the bottom, click "Source Options".

I always use:
1. Print source Citations, then under that select
* As endnotes at the end of All Chapters.

My guess is you had the option to print endnotes after each chapter.

I have printed 5 major books (500 pages or more) and I think you always
want the sources printed at the end of the book after all your chapters.

You will also want to include Indexes for the names and locations at the
end of of the book. I use 2 columns for these with "Use Leaders" selected
and start indexes at Odd Page numbers. The Odd Page number starts the
indexes on the right side of the book when you physically have your book
open.

Good luck.

Re: [LegacyUG] Fw: Concerns about MyHeritage

2017-08-06 Thread Leon Chapman
I think there is a mis-understanding about Legacy & MyHeritage Hints.
First of all, MyHeritage does not use your whole database to find hints -
that would take forever with a large database.

Here is what is published by MyHeritage on matches and hints:

***
MyHeritage Privacy Policy for Legacy Family Tree
MyHeritage uses Smart Matching™ and Record Matching technologies to match
between family trees and historical records on MyHeritage and Legacy Family
Tree trees.

What is Smart Matching™?
Smart Matching™ compares your family tree to all family trees on
MyHeritage, to look for matches. If matches are found, you are notified and
you can view the matches, confirm or reject them. This feature can help you
make new discoveries in your genealogy research, and also connect you to
distant family members who are researching the same individuals as you are.

What is Record Matching?
Record Matching automatically finds matching historical records for your
family tree, from our growing collection of billions of records. It can
save you time with your research and allow you to make fascinating
discoveries through birth documents, census records, newspaper articles and
more.

How does it work?
When Smart Matching™ and Record Matching are enabled within Legacy Family
Tree, T*information from small parts of your family tree is periodically
passed*, 'behind the scenes' and without you having to do anything, to a
matching service on the MyHeritage website. This information includes
names, dates and places associated with individuals and their close
relatives. MyHeritage uses this data to find extremely accurate Smart
Matches™ and Record Matches for the relevant individuals. *This information
is not collected by MyHeritage and is deleted automatically after matches
are calculated and displayed to you. Smart Matches™ are not bi-directional:
Legacy Family Tree users receive them with trees of MyHeritage users, but
MyHeritage users do not receive them with trees of Legacy Family Tree
users.*

Note that some of the matches can be viewed and confirmed for free, while
others require a MyHeritage data subscription.

*The information passed to MyHeritage is never used for any other purpose
and will never be displayed, sold, licensed or used in any manner
whatsoever.*

If you have any question or concerns, feel free to contact MyHeritage via
the Help Center <http://helpcenter.myheritage.com>.

***

I have highlighted in bold the critical information you need to know.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing a Source

2017-07-26 Thread Leon Chapman
You MUST cite each piece of data for every person.

You can do the sourcing in a few different ways.
1. Source each person and their data as you enter them using 1 master source &
clipboard - this is what I would do. This is pretty easy - create the master
source and copy it to the clipboard. Enter each person’s data and 1 click on
triple bar on left side of data entry screen assigns the clipboard source to
all the fields for that person. So, basically, it is 1 more click on data
entry to assign the source to that persons data.

2. Create a blank Legacy database and enter all the new people and then create
1 master source
  A. Then, source everyone and all their data using advanced sourcing.
  B. Import these people into your main database (Note: you will need one
common person in both databases to aid with the import/merging of people.

3. You can enter all the new people without any sourcing
   A. Create 1 master source for these people
   B. Tag all Descendants from the oldest person (sister) that gave you the
information (Tag all of the new people with Tag 1)
   C. Use Advanced Sourcing (From Tools) and assign the new source to everyone
with a Tag 1 and all their data fields.

Any of these options work, but Options 2 and 3 require a little more knowledge
of importing / merging / Tagging / Sourcing. If you have less that about 15-20
people, I would use option 1. When you more than 20 people, then option 2 or 3
will be much easier to accomplish the sourcing of everyone’s information.

Good luck.

Re: [LegacyUG] File Name Issue - Conflicted Copy

2017-07-25 Thread Leon Chapman
Bill:

I would not delete any files yet.

Do you have a backup of your database before this took place? If so, I would
restore that or start using that database.
If not, you will probably just have to open the last non-conflicted database
and then do a File, Save As, and give it a new name - I like to use a name and
date as part of the file name, e.g., Bill_Hoff_Family_25July17.fdb.

You may have lost some work when this all took place, so you will want to check
areas that your were working on to see if the data is what you expect. I would
make sure the renamed database seems to be ok before I deleted the conflicting
file.

The Media files can be stored in a separate location. So they might be on
Drive C:\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\. Normally, your database is
stored at: C:\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\

If you have moved your data to DropBox, I would recommend a similar folder
structure:
\DropBox\Legacy Family Tree\Data\&
\DropBox\Legacy Family Tree\Media\

You will need to created those DropBox subfolders.

Here is the techie stuff as to why you had conflicting files:
1. Legacy runs on a single computer and their database is not network
concurrent record change compatible.
2. To have multiple computers (users) accessing a file (database) at the same
time, there has to be several rules implemented that lock out other users while
one user is changing a record in the database — you cannot have multiple people
changing the same database record concurrently. Legacy does not implement such
network / database rules and I am sure never will.

Bottom line, “YOU" have to control access to your database one person at a
time. So, if you have a Laptop & Desktop, only use one of those while having
your Legacy database open. Make sure you close Legacy on one computer before
going to the other computer to open the database and wait a few minutes until
the file are synced in DropBox and all computers. Some people say they hardly
ever close Legacy — that is a mistake in my opinion, it should be closed every
time you leave your computer for more than say 10-15 minutes.

2017-07-25 Thread Leon Chapman
Looks like you may have had the file open using two computers at the same time
using DropBox or some cloud storage.
If so, the cardinal RULE is: Use only one computer at a time to work on your
cloud stored database.

So, if you have your file open on one computer, be sure to completely exit
Legacy before opening the file on another computer. You also need to allow
some time for the database file to sync with the cloud and all computers.
Normal a few minutes, but depends on the cloud service and your internet speed.
With Dropbox, you normal see a file sync notification in upper right of
screen. Other cloud services may not be as user friendly or sync as fast a
DropBox.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help With Citing Sources

2017-07-13 Thread Leon Chapman
Here is an example of how I use Basic Sources:
1. Census
  a. I create an Census Event as follows:
census, 20 Jun 1900, Columbia, Wapello Co, IA, USA.¹

It reads in reports as: He appeared on the census on 20 Jun 1900 in
Columbia, Wapello Co, IA, USA.¹

2. Source
   a. *Source List Name:* U.S. Federal Census - 1900 - Columbia Twp,
Wapella Co, IA - Chapman, Wells H. - 1866
NOTE: The year at the end is the birth year of individual

   b. *Title:* U.S. Federal Census - 1900 - Columbia Twp, Wapella Co, IA
- Chapman, Wells H. - 1866

   c. *Publication Facts:* Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place:
Columbia, Wapello, Iowa; Roll: 463; Page: 14B; Enumeration District: 0129;
FHL microfilm: 1240463. Wells H. Chapman, Age 33, b. June 1866,
Occupation: Farmer; Lydia Chapman, Age 33, b. July 1866, OH; Ralph
Chapman, Age 12, b. March 1885, OH; Roy Chapman, Age 9, b. November 1890,
OH; Leora Chapman, Age 6, b. November 1893, OH.

*Output Source reads:*
*U.S. Federal Census - 1900 - Columbia Twp, Wapella Co, IA - Chapman,
Wells H. - 1866 *(Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Columbia,
Wapello, Iowa; Roll: 463; Page: 14B; Enumeration District: 0129; FHL
microfilm: 1240463. Wells H. Chapman, Age 33, b. June 1866, Occupation:
Farmer; Lydia Chapman, Age 33, b. July 1866, OH; Ralph Chapman, Age 12,
b. March 1885, OH; Roy Chapman, Age 9, b. November 1890, OH; Leora
Chapman, Age 6, b. November 1893, OH.). Rec. Date: 20 Jun 1900.

To me, this is a very clean way to do Census - a simple Census event with
the details in the source for the Census Record. I like to capture most of
the Census information in the Source Publication Facts which is printed
just like you enter the data.

I would create the Census event for the head of the household and source
the event and then copy the event and source to each person in the
household.

If a person has an occupation, then I create an Occupation event for that
person, say "Farmer", and with same date and place as census and source
this with the Census source.

One could also create a Resident event with same date and place as the
Census.

You can use shared events for the family, but there could be issues when
exporting to a GEDCom and read by other software that doesn't support
shared events.

I am what is known as a splitter (as opposed to a Lumper) when it comes to
sourcing. I probably have 100s of individual census sources as shown above.
A Lumper might have 1 master source for all Census or Census year and then
place all the information in the details.

I also have 100s of Find-a-Grave sources, where a Lumper might only have 1
master Find-a-Grave source. My Find-a-Grave sources look very similar to
the new Find-a-Grave source at the bottom of the webpage on FAG.
e.g.:
*Find-a-Grave - Chapman, Wells H. - 1866* (Wells H. Chapman, b. 27 Jun
1866, d. 11 Feb 1947, Burial: Arkansas City - Parker Cemetery, Cowley Co,
KS, USA. Spouse: Lida M. Chisman Chapman (1866-1947), Children: Ralph F.
Chapman (1888-1968), LeRoy Ervin Chapman (1890-1983). Find A Grave
Memorial# 23245786.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr=23245786=acom).
Rec. Date: 4 Dec 2007.

The best thing to do is try sourcing in a few different ways and look at
the output that is generated in a Descendant Book and see if it is what you
want.

I personally don't like the Source Writer output format, but you might be
fine with it. The big advantage of the Source Writer is the templates that
help you place the information in the correct locations on the template.
If you export your data to a GEDCom, the Source Writer sources are
converted to the Basic Source. There is not a converter to take a Basic
Source and convert to a Source Writer source.

Hope this helps some.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dropbox for new user

2017-07-05 Thread Leon Chapman
You probably want to copy your Media files into a folder on DropBox:

I basically replication the folders on drive c:

…\DropBox\LegacyFamilyTree\Data\ &
…\DropBox\LegacyFamilyTree\Media\

Then copy your data files into the Data folder on Dropbox and copy your media
files into the Media folder on Dropbox.

You will need to set the 2 Dropbox locations as the defaults within Legacy
Options/Customize/Files on both computers.

One major problem you need to be careful to not have the same Legacy file open
on both computers. That can lead to a corrupted datafile.

Give Dropbox time to sync before opening the file on another computer and make
sure Legacy is closed on one computer before opening on another computer.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event sharing and media

2017-06-25 Thread Leon Chapman
Scott

Simple answer for question 1:
Always add a picture to an event so it will be printed in reports. You can
have events for individuals and marriage events for family pictures.

Question 2:
It is lots of work to go back and change your past work. May want to just use
shared events as you go forward with data entry.

Shared events are nice for data entry, but lots of other genealogy programs and
online databases do not support shared events. So, if you want to export your
data, you will be better off not using shared events. However, I believe
Legacy 9 converts all shared events to standard events when you export to a
GEDCom file. I do not use shared events.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Relink

2017-04-29 Thread Leon Chapman
Madeleine;

When using the Relinker, you just specify the Drive(s) you want to search
(e.g., C:, D:). Normally, you would just select the C: drive. The Relinker
will search the entire drive to find your picture files. When complete, you
can choose to have them copied into the Legacy default Media file location.
You cannot specify a folder to search in the Relinker, just a Drive.

The Family Tree Maker file could be an issue — that sounds like a database and
not a picture file. Legacy will only link picture files with an extension of
JPEG, PNG & document files like PDF, Word. Normally, you would only link
picture files. So, I am not sure what you mean by FTM file??

Legacy does not work on a Mac out of the box.

You can use Parallels or VMWare or others to run a version of Windows in a
Virtual Machine. Then you can install Legacy under the Windows operating
system on a Mac.

I am using Parallels with Windows 10 to run Legacy on my MacBook Pro.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding "Global" Events

2016-09-22 Thread Leon Chapman
Don
Shared events is for a few people like a family in a census record, so that
will not do what u want to do.

Try this.
1. Go to Tools, Advanced Tagging, Use an unused Tag and Tag everyone in your
database with say Tag 1.
2. Go to Tools, Advanced Sourcing
A. Put a source on the source clipboard (click Sourse Clipboard )
B. Select Tab - Which records to Use - select -> Assign to individuals with Tag
1
C. Select Tab I - Where to Assign Citations
D. Select check box, Assign citations to individual information
E. Select all fields or a specific data field to assign you source
F. Hit Apply button to assign your clipboard source to all individuals with Tag
1 to the field you have selected.

This seems to be a long process, but it is very easy to do. I use this
procedure to assign me as a source to everyone in my database if I am going to
create a Gedcom to upload or send to someone.

Good luck.

You are going to have to be a lot more specific.
1. What kind of computer, operating system
2. Legacy version
3. What do you mean you lost your Genealogy Site? Site normally refers to
a webpage/website? Do you have all your information on the Web? What is
the URL?
4. How does Geoff Legacy come on mean? Are you watching a webinar and
that did not work?

It would help if you would write your emails using the text portion rather
than putting everything in the Subject Line of your email.

Re: [LegacyUG] second wife

2016-06-28 Thread Leon Chapman
My version of Legacy 8.0.0.559 shows all spouses for a child that had
multiple marriages.
What version are you using?

If you have one person listed twice, it sounds like you have the same
person attached twice to a couple. I do not have duplicate children
showing.

In the lower right corner of the Select a Report Option screen after you
have chosen Reports >Family Group, there is a RESET button. You might try
doing a Reset, that changes all the options you have set up for the report
back to the default settings. You may have to then update any specific
settings for your report under report options.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Detail Picture

It is up to you. I have found that most pictures attached to a source when
printed in a report are too small to print or view clearly.

I would suggest you attach both pictures and then generate a descendant report
with sources at the end and see what it looks like. If it works for you, then
great.

Re: [LegacyUG] Address lists in Publishing Center

2016-06-08 Thread Leon Chapman
Kathy:

You are correct that the latest version of Word will convert simple PDF
files to Word documents. I tried converting my latest book that I
published which was 535 pages, 8 1/2 X 11, hardback cover book. The
results were totally unusable.

In my book, using the Publishing Center, I had about 20 chapters, including
ancestor and descendant charts, family group sheets, Chronology reports,
multiple family descendants with lots of pictures, origins and migration
chapters with full indexing of sourcing, names and locations at the end.
MS Word conversion of that document trashed everything but the 1st page of
the report - it all became a mess with breaks in pages, charts with any
lines were totally trashed. It would take a several weeks to repair the
document after Words conversion of my book.

I have tested several PDF converters and almost all of them have major
problems with say the Chronology report. If you want to test PDF
converters, just try a few chapters that has a Chronology report, a family
group sheet, and an ancestor and descendant chart. Even the text in a
descendant report with lots of events and pictures cause many problems with
most converters. If it is a very simple text document, then most of the
converters do fine, but Legacy/Genealogy reports are very complex with
lines, indents, spacing, & pictures issues.

The single PDF converter that I found to work very well is SmartPDF
converter.

I have found that if you try to create indexes in Word for converted
documents that you will have a problem in creating the 3 indexes at the
end: 1) Sourcing, 2) Name index and 3) Location index. You will probably
have luck with the Table of Contents and maybe sourcing. The others often
are an issue in Word without lots of work to the document to manually
insert all of the sourcing index location. Names becomes an issue since
many people appear on multiple pages.

If you let Legacy do all the indexing, report writing, page numbering,
headers and footers, then all that is left is to insert a chapter or two
that you have left blank chapters for. The SmartPDF converter allows you
to separate the PDF into parts and then you can reassemble the PDF parts.
I separate the blank chapter and then use Word to add text or an image like
a descendant chart to that chapter and create a PDF of just that chapter
and use SmartPDF to put the parts back together -- that way all the page
number and indexing stay in place -- you will be missing index items for
the blank pages that were inserted, but usually, that is only a few pages
and in many cases, just pictures or chart images.

I have a 3-4 page set of guidelines that I used in publishing these books
that I have shared to several people on this list.

Anyway, that is the best way that I have found in publishing 5 hardback
cover books of over 400 pages in each book. One was close to 800 pages.

The best way is to start simple with a few Chapters in a book and try some
simple reports and convert them and see what happens. If things work ok
for you, then use it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Address lists in Publishing Center

2016-06-08 Thread Leon Chapman
If it is not in the column list on left (Available Items) in the Publishing
Center, then NO you cannot add that item. Address list is not in the
options for Chapters in the Publication Center.

You can do this to add an Address list:
1. Create a report under View > Master Lists > Address > Mailand save
as a Text File. Note the number of pages in this Text file.
2. In the Publication center, you can add a chapter using "Place Holder"
and specify the number of pages in your Address text file you created in 1.
3. After you have created your Report in Publication Center and Saved it
as a PDF, You will need to convert that to a Word file and then within
Word, insert the Address text file in those black pages.

An excellent PDF converter to Word is called SmartPDF Converter. It will
cost you some $$, but is well worth it. You can find info on it at
www.smartpdfconverter.com.

I think it is pretty obvious that if you try to chart more than about 4-5
generations you are going to have a problem trying to print and reassemble
the chart. I have printed charts out to a jpg file and taken that file to
Wal*Mart and had them print it on poster paper. A 5 generation chart
resulted in a 2' by 6' poster that was printed using a plotter.

Try some charts within Legacy and see how many pages of output you generate.

If you only have 1 child per generation, then you mostly will have a
vertical chart and you could print several generations.
In my experience, many of the families in the late 1800s and early 1900s
had 6-12 children, so plotting descendants becomes an issue with that many
children, children's children, etc.

Try looking at some charts by using the Preview mode in Legacy Charting and
it tells you how big the output is and how many pages to print the chart.
Legacy even provides an interface to a nice printing service to print your
large charts at a reasonable cost. You can see the cost to print the chart
based upon the quality of the paper you use for printing. All a very nice
service.

I think you are asking for something that you won't like if you had it. My
experience with any of the charting programs, you will only be able to use
maybe 4-5 generations and beyond that you are creating such a large chart, you
can't see or print it on any reasonable size of paper or poster.

I have about 40,000 people in my database and anything over about 4-5
generations is too large to use. Some of my families go back 15-20
generations. In Legacy, you can create a chart of Fathers only that would span
that many generations.

In Legacy, use the Legacy Charting icon to the right of the Internet icon and
you can plot lots of different charts. I would suggest you try some of those
before purchasing other software.
In some of my testing of Legacy Charting, I have created charts of over 100
generations. The problem is, you cannot print that size of chart - it is just a
paper generator.

If you only have a few people in your database with only 3-4 generations, then
you could chart something useful to be printed.

Anyway, just my thoughts, you won't be happy with what you are asking for.

Yes you should allow a little extra on the left for the binding of the book.

I used www.lulu.com to publish and am very happy with them.

Good luck on your Publisher fonts.

Re: [LegacyUG] Custom font set not working in Publication Center

2016-05-26 Thread Leon Chapman
John:

In the Publication center, you have access to and can change the fonts for
each chapter of the report.
Let's say you have the 1st chapter as a Multiple Lines of Descendant Book
Report and the 2nd Chapter as an Ancestor Chart for xxx.

1. Go to Reports > Publication Center.
2. Click / highlight Chapter 1 - Multiple Lines of Descendant Book
3. At bottom of window, click Edit Settings for Current Chapter
4. In this window, at bottom, click Report Options
5. In this new window, click Format Tab at top
6. At far right, Click Report Fonts
This is where you change specific fonts for each area of the report. Make
your changes and close each window until you are back to the Publication
Center window. These steps set up the Multiple lines of Descendant
Chapters.

For the 2nd Chapter, Ancestor Chart, follow the same steps above and set
the fonts displayed/printed.
Repeat for each chapter you have in the Publication Center Reports.

I just recently published an 8 1/2 X 11 hardback covered book that had 36
Chapters and was 535 pages long or about 1" thick book.

You will need do many Previews and create a PDFs to make sure everything is
OK before sending to any printer.

Good luck.

Have the fellow researcher send you a GEDCOM file of his data. Then you
can import that into Legacy.
If he has Legacy 8, then it would be better if he could send you a Legacy
file with the people you have in common - no import, you just do a merge of
the two databases.

Re: [LegacyUG] File locations on new installs

2016-05-25 Thread Leon Chapman
Mary:

It is Microsoft standards for developers that programs be installed in the
C:\usr\Program Files area for a number of years / versions of Windows.
Legacy 7.5 installed in the C:\Legacy\ area and was counter to the
Microsoft standards. In certain cases, this lead to some problems.
As an example, many people just backup their "My Document" and "My
Pictures" folders for all of their data. Of course, you missed backing up
your Legacy data if your were running Legacy 7 & 7.5.

Legacy 8 has corrected this issue and now installs in the proper Microsoft
standard location. This simplifies backups and any confusion about where
the data and media files are kept -- it is always in Windows 10 "Documents"
folder. This was a necessary improvement for the Legacy Developers to keep
with the standards.

Hope this helps explain the differences.
