Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-14 Thread sarah hughes
I have just opened my Legacy 9 from the task bar where I keep it attached,
and to my horror my whole family tree has disappeared! All I get is that
silly sample one, and I have gone through the list that Legacy gave me, but
none of them come up with my tree. Even where I had it saved in my computer
files, there are just 2 sample files of that other silly tree. Please help.
as I need to upgrade to 10, but how can I when my tree has just disappeared
from everywhere? I was only using it the other day! Would resetting my
laptop to an earlier time help, please? It is Windows 11, and I had the
free Legacy 9 edition.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-14 Thread Linda G
Legacy 10 has it's own big blue circle with a white "L. Hover your mouse
over the icon, if it reads Legacy 9, delete it. That one won't work. Since
you updated, you no longer have Legacy 9 on your computer. Go to Start,
show all apps, scroll down to located the Legacy 10 icon. At least, that
was all that I had to do. Then pinned it to Start and I dragged the icon
to where I wanted it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-14 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
You will probably see your file in the Recent File list if you haven't
moved or deleted it.
The Recent File List is found by clicking the L top left corner of the
Legacy screen if the L is larger than the title bar. If it isn't, you'll
see a System Ribbon tab and it's on that instead. It depends on the
Design Style you are using.
Here's the support article on finding a lost file:

It's possible that Options > Customise 1.2 is no longer pointing to the
file you want to automatically open.
It's also possible that you haven't set Options > Customise 6.1 and 6.2
to where you want your file to be.

Another possibility is that your Documents folder is inside OneDrive
because you asked OneDrive to sync it or you agreed to let Windows
backup your data. If so, you need to go to the OneDrive settings and
make sure it is keeping local copies of your files as well as syncing
them to the OneDrive cloud.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-15 Thread sarah hughes
But my problem is that I can't update to Legacy 10, because I don't have
Legacy 9 to upgrade it from. Sure, I could install Legacy 10, but then I
would still have no tree there. I could create a gedcom from my Genes
reunited tree, but as someone said, gedcom is the last resort! I have an
external hard-drive plugged into my laptop, so perhaps it might be on
there. But if it's gone from the laptop, it will probably be gone from
there too!
Should I reset laptop to an earlier time and see if it reappears, perhaps?
Thank you, Sarah

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
I've already given you the Support article on how to find a lost file.
Your file will be there.
You don't have to have Legacy at all to install Legacy 10. But if you
have Legacy you convert your earlier Legacy database into Legacy 10 format.
If you've been using Legacy, even a much earlier one, you can open your
current database -when you find it OR use your latest Legacy data backup
zip - you have been backing up haven't you?
Here's the Support file again:

No you shouldn't reset your Laptop to an earlier time. Use the options
in the Support article or open Windows File Explorer and search yourself
for *.fdb files.

Sarah,
Go back to the article I mentioned before re finding a lost file. Here's
the link again.
<https://legacyfamilytree.com/help-center/?a=I-lost-my-family-file---id--K-I9BVL_R5SkFN6sY2Vaeg>

It will be there somewhere. When you find it, since you don't seem to be
good at finding your way around your computer, put it in the Legacy
default folder for data where the Sample file is, since you seem able to
find that.   ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\ folder.

Then set Options > Customise 1.2 to open your file automatically.
Save your data backup zips to a Google Drive folder and make sure you
know how to use your data backup with File > Restore File.

In the backup dialogue you will see you can set the folder for backups.

Legacy 10 has been released and is free for everyone. It has all the

weren't caused by the upgrade. 3. Backup your family file and media

I do know my way around my computer, and that is a totally unnecessary and
nasty thing to say. I did click on the link for lost files, but because I
now don't have Legacy 9 or 10 on my computer there is no blue circle or any
Legacy screen to find any files. I have often used the list of files before
to find the right one, but when there is no legacy screen at all, that is
impossible. I would have thought you would understand that.
I have sent an email to support, and let's hope that they reply without any

I think that is a very unfair thing to say to Cathy who has done her

valuable and hugely appreciated. The impression we gathered from your

those who are trying to assist you is not going to help you in any way.

You don't have Legacy on your computer and can't figure out why you can't
open your tree??? And you think you are computer savvy? And you have the
gall to attack those that are trying to help you? Now you want 'support'
to help you after you have trashed anyone who has reached out to you? Good
luck!
Upgrading to Legacy 10 is very easy for anyone who "knows their way around
their computer".

2024-06-17 Thread sarah hughes
I have finally got my FT back! After clicking on practically every
file/folder on my laptop to try and get one of the Sample ones to open, I
finally did. But when I went through all the list my tree still wasn't
there. Then I just clicked on something to refresh the list of recent files
and the 3rd one was my tree! A box popped up to ask me to transfer stuff to
Legacy 10, and Voila!
Thank you all for trying to help me.

It was unfair what she said to me. I am actually quite computer-savvy, but
I was so frustrated by the whole thing. I did say thank you to everyone who
had tried to assist me, and that includes Cathy. Her first email about
downloading Legacy 10 was very helpful, but that was never the problem. It
took me a while but at least I got it sorted.

Similarly, you can look for your data files using File Explorer.
Open File Explorer from the taskbar or right-click on the Start menu,
choose File Explorer and then select a location from the left pane to
search or browse.
Go to the drive where you store your data (on a basic setup it would be
C:\) and search (top right search panel) for ".fdb".

All your Legacy data files will show up.

It will be there somewhere. When you find it, since you don't
seem to be
good at finding your way around your computer, put it in the
Legacy
default folder for data where the Sample file is, since you
seem able to
find that.   ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\ folder.
Then set Options > Customise 1.2 to open your file automatically.
Save your data backup zips to a Google Drive folder and make

In the backup dialogue you will see you can set the folder for

Sarah,
It's good to hear you've found your family file.
Write down somewhere where it actually is.
Set Options > Customise 1.2 to open it automatically AND Options >

2024-06-18 Thread sarah hughes
Hi Cathy

I do have a question for you, if you don't mind; well 2 actually!
The 1st is that I usually pin the Legacy site to my task bar, but should I
also use those 2 Customize options that you suggest?
Secondly, I noticed when I was trawling through my folders and files, that
there are an awful lot from the past, ie Legacy 9, in various folder
formats. None of them will open when I try, so can I just delete them all,
and just keep ones from Legacy 10? TIA

Regards, Sarah

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-18 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
Q1: Yes you should still set the Customise options I mentioned. It's the
program that you've probably pinned to the Taskbar, not a particular
database.
Q2: When you are happy you have your all your data in your Legacy 10
database you are always opening, yes you can delete other copies you
find elsewhere. A Legacy database is made up of the main FDB file which
has the Legacy logo and a number of other files that start filename> but have different extensions. You can delete them. What you
should keep are data backup zips - at least the last 10 for complete
peace of mind. Put them in the one folder. You only need the last 2 or 3
media backup zips.
The reason for keeping more data backups is that we don't always realise
there is a problem in the database until we go to a particular family we
may not have looked at for ages. The data backup zip zips together that
FDB file with the  others with the same family filename.
Legacy 10 now records in Options > Customise your backup folders. Again
see section 6.

To minimise the need to use a data backup, regularly do File > File
Maintenance > Check/Repair. Databases are like cars - they need regular
maintenance.
It's years since I've actually needed to use a data backup due to my
database becoming unhealthy but I still have some backups going back
decades. I restore an old one to see what progress I've made and
sometimes to retrieve people I remember researching but can't find. I
used to delete people I found didn't belong to the family but sometimes
I discover later that they do but in a different part of the family. I
no longer delete but just unlink.

Hi Cathy

I do have a question for you, if you don't mind; well 2 actually!
The 1st is that I usually pin the Legacy site to my task bar, but
should I also use those 2 Customize options that you suggest?
Secondly, I noticed when I was trawling through my folders and files,
that there are an awful lot from the past, ie Legacy 9, in various
folder formats. None of them will open when I try, so can I just
delete them all, and just keep ones from Legacy 10? TIA

Regards, Sarah

Sarah,
It's good to hear you've found your family file.
Write down somewhere where it actually is.
Set Options > Customise 1.2 to open it automatically AND Options >
Customise 6.1 to the folder it is in.

Similarly, you can look for your data files using File Explorer.
Open File Explorer from the taskbar or right-click on the Start menu,
choose File Explorer and then select a location from the left pane to
search or browse.
Go to the drive where you store your data (on a basic setup it would
be C:\) and search (top right search panel) for ".fdb".

All your Legacy data files will show up.

Cheers, Brett
