Floppy install for Lib 110:
1.Download the floppy drive file, L110FDD8.EXE, from the Toshiba
website (http://pcsupport.toshiba.com). Be sure to save the file in
a known location or directory.
2.Open the device manager.
3.Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and double-click on the
MY COMPUTER icon located on the desktop.
4.Highlight the device manager tab at the top of system properties.
5.Remove any floppy disk controllers present by clicking once on
the controller, then clicking Remove.
6.Choose the + sign next to the Floppy Disk Controllers category in
device manager.
7.Highlight any listings present under this category individually and
press the DEL (delete) key on the keyboard, answering "OK" to
remove the device.
8.Exit the device manager by choosing Close.
9.Open Windows Explorer (Start/Programs/Windows Explorer).
10.Locate the downloaded file, L110FDD8.EXE, and execute it.
Extract to the defaulted location (c:\FLOPPY.W98).
11.Refresh Windows Explorer (press F5 on the keyboard).
12.Open the FLOPPY.W98 folder and right click on the file
TSBFLBFD.INF (depending on the settings in Windows Explorer,
the .INF extension may or may not be present), and select "Install".
13.If prompted for the location of a file (for example, flbfd.inf) during
installation, type in the directory where the files were extracted
(i.e. C:\FLOPPY.W98)
14.Reboot the computer (Start/Shutdown/Restart) after the driver
installation has completed. (copied from Tosh support site)

You can do the above without the floppy drive in the PCMCIA
slot... when you put the floppy drive into a slot, then it will finish
the rest of the install which is what I did. It wasn't clear that
the floppy drive needs to be in the pc slot, but it might be only
one step then.

I don't know if this will work for the Lib 100 using that floppy driver
or not.

Let me know if this helps!

20gb drive noises

2001-05-14 Thread Karen R

From: Karen R <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: 20gb drive noises

I finally got around to formatting and installing W98se on
my 20gb drive. The only driver I needed to upgrade was
the video.

After turning off the soundcard, I noticed that the drive
seems to make lots of noises every time I access something
on the drive, or do anything with the mouse. It is a Toshiba
drive.

It's seems like a quick scratching noise of some kind.

Does anyone else's Toshiba 20gb drive make weird
sounds when running programs or accessing stuff on it??

The 4.1gb drive is very quiet... so am wondering.

TIA,
Karen

Where does one go to find these incorrectly detected/installed devices??

to my
PCMCIA problems.
It turns out if you boot up Windows 98 in safe mode you will see services
that you would not normally see !.
The PCMCIA Card Service (which was not visible using normal boot up
!).
Remove this and all the other PCMCIA drivers, and reboot it installs
all the
right drivers, so its has fixed itself :-)

Hi Paul,

Put your modem in a slot and hook it up to the phone line...

In the Control Panel, open the System icon and go to Device Manager tab and
see if there is a yellow exclamation point or red X showing on top of your
modem driver... double click on the name of your modem to bring up the properties
window... make sure the modem is NOT disabled on the General tab... if it is,
unclick it and click OK and see what happens... if you get a message
or something... and what the message if any says.

If there is a yellow exclamation point, inside the properties window, you'll need to
check the Resources tab and see what it says in there...

Also, close down the properties window for the modem and double click on the
"Computer" at the top of the list in the Device Mgr window... check all your IRQ's
to see which one your modem is using... you can also check the I/O.. and the memory
in that same window...

There should be a Modem icon in the Control Panel... open that and see what is there
for your Modem... click on the Diagnostics tab... see what Com port it has your modem
on... if it is there, click on the Com port once to hilite it and click on the button
below
named "More info..."

Tell me what happens...

Thanks Arnold, for your help. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

After searching and reading in the support section of Toshiba's site,
I discovered that the hibernation feature still has not been enabled to
work in W98se.

You'd think after all this time, there would be a driver or something
from them for this. So all my questions on hibernating with my 20gb
drive are unnecessary. Bummer :-/

Oh well, I'm glad anyway to have another Libby, and be back amoung
this fine group :-)

Altho, I'd still appreciate knowing a good version of Red Hat that will
work on my 100 without having to be tweaked to death.

Hi Paul,

Hmmm, when I go into the Add New Hardware wizard
in the Control Panel and select "No, I want to select the
hardware from a list" rather than let Windows find it...
it brings up a list which has PCMCIA socket on it...

Do you get that on your list too???

If you do, then you select it and go from there...

BTW, I always do a custom install of any Windoz
product... gives more control over the end result
that way. It brings up screens not seen otherwise,
like selecting other hardware that is not detected
by Windoz.

Re: 100CT PCMCIA Problem

2001-04-08 Thread Karen R

Date: Sun, 08 Apr 2001 10:58:00 -0700
From: Karen R <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: 100CT PCMCIA Problem

Windows 98 includes several Troubleshooter Wizards to help you
troubleshoot device conflicts on your system. Using one of these
Troubleshooters is an easy way for non-technical users to find and fix
hardware problems. You're led step by step through a series of
questions designed to track down the solution to your specific problem.
All you have to do is answer the interactive questions in the
Troubleshooter, and you'll be led to the probable solution to your
problem.

The following Troubleshooters come with Windows 98:
Dial-Up Networking
Direct Cable Connection
DirectX
Display
DriveSpace
Hardware Conflict
Memory
Modem
MS-DOS Programs
Networking
PC Card
Print
Sound
Startup and Shutdown
The Microsoft Network

To track down a particular problem with a Troubleshooter:

1.Click the Start button and select Help.
2.When the Help window appears, click the Contents tab click
Troubleshooting, and then click Windows 98 Troubleshooters.
3.Select the Troubleshooter for your specific problem in the left
pane. The Troubleshooter itself will be displayed in the right
   pane.
4.Follow the interactive directions to troubleshoot your
   particular hardware problems.

Fixing Big Problems with System Troubleshooter

If your problems are so big that the standard Windows Troubleshooters
can't find solve them, you need to turn to a more powerful tool. Included
with Windows 98 is just such a tool: System Troubleshooter.

System Troubleshooter is a tool that uses the same steps used by
Microsoft Technical Support staff when they're trying to diagnose
system configuration problems. You work through a series of steps
that, one-by-one, disable various system components until you track
down the one that's causing your specific problem. Use System
Troubleshooter when you have major problems with your system,
particularly problems that appear after you've installed a new piece of
hardware.

Caution

Because System Troubleshooter modifies key system files, it should be
used only by technically savvy users.

To use System Troubleshooter:

1.Launch System Troubleshooter by clicking the Start button
and selecting Run. When the Run dialog box appears, type
tshoot in the Open box, and then click OK.
2.Before you begin diagnosing problems, create a backup of all
your system files by selecting the General tab and clicking the
   Create Backup button.

Hope this helps!

And I would like to get my hands on those two plastic
spacers that fit inside the PCMCIA slots, and an
extended port replicator.

I'm so glad I kept my THREE brand new mouse pad covers
and my extra Toshiba hdd handle with screws...

Sometimes one just does something right :-)

I'm Back!

2001-04-07 Thread Karen R

Date: Sat, 07 Apr 2001 22:09:19 -0700
From: Karen R <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: I'm Back!

Hi all,

Yep, the "groovy grandma" has returned with
my third Libby :-) Just couldn't stand it any
longer. Hope this is my last one.

Got a 20gb drive for it; and would like to know...
now what do I do with it??? :-)

Want to partition it... doesn't matter how many...
to run W98SE and RedHat on it...

So I need to know exactly where to put the space
for the hibernation.
Will the hibernation work within a logical drive
created for it??
Does this partition need to be left unformatted??
Will the hibernation work now with W98se??

I've read in the archives of the experiment done
with a 20gb drive by our resident guru... but don't
exactly understand how to figure out using dos fdisk
where to put that space... and yes, I'd like to put
it inside the dos extended drive portion of the disk.
Red Hat can run at the end of the drive, hopefully.

One more question... what is the latest version of
Red Hat that will run on the Libby 100??

Glad to be back and see you all again :-)

We could even sell tickets for all the spectators who would like to witness... or
better yet ! video tape it and make a realaudio/etc file and put it on the web so

Ok, let me re-try this :-)

Will the mice covers for my Libby 100 fit and work
on all the models from the 50 to 110??

Are the mice covers for the Libby 50 to 110 models
interchangeable??

Olaf,

It came to me today at work -- in a quiet moment -- that my info
would not work for your hibernation, and why... Strange how the
mind works! :-)

I have absolutely no idea how one would fdisk it to get around the
lousy bios needing the hibernation at the 8gb spot.

Do you have the latest bios upgrade? Would it make a difference?

As I understand your email, you want two partitions: 8gb and
3+gb, with free space at the end for the hibernation, right?

I believe you need to leave the space "free" at the end for the
hibernation and not put it as a partition.

With fdisk, I'd delete the logical drive(s) and the extended drive.
Then would create a new extended drive 100mb LESS than the
size that is left for it. Then create a logical drive using all the space
given.

That "should" leave the 100mb at the end totally free.

I've done this when leaving part of the drive free for another
OS...

Let me know if it works...

I've noticed that I can put my Toshiba 6gb drive into my
100ct both ways - label side up and green side up. Except
the handles will only fit correctly with the green side up
when the computer is right-side-up and running...

This was confirmed from Micro Solutions in an email to
me that this is the correct way the drives are supposed to be.

Don't know if this may help or not... am assuming that you
have the drive in the correct position.

Thanks, Jim, for the welcome back :-)

As for us dropping off into the ocean - and you thinking
you are safe where you are... haha, I've got news for
you!

When I lived in Bozeman, Montana... (back of back of beyond!)
the local *factual* story was that the town 30 miles east called
Livingston was going to be beach-front property when the
west coast earthquake hit... SO, Jim,

if you live *west* of that town, better take some swimming
lessons. Wow, I hope this doesn't keep you awake at nights!

And your advice about the integrity, honesty and knowledge
base of this list is well noted :-) Perhaps I should've put David's
name all by itself and not at the top of the other list, eh??

I hope I didn't offend him... so easy to get off on the wrong foot...
been away tooo long :-)

Ok... but I'm doing a clean install... so how does the Toshiba Controls app fit
into the picture?? plus all the rest of the Toshiba stuff that was installed at the
end of the W95 install??

For instance, reading the support bulletin for disabling the hibernation and stand
by features, it talks about a control panel applet called "Power Save"... after
doing my clean install of W98 and the video driver update, I don't see any applet
with that name in my control panel.

Yep, it's really me!! Am now the owner of my second
Dust Puppy stickered Libby 100.

Am installing W98 on it, and need help with the Toshiba
drivers and stuff. Anyone want to compile a list for me of
all that is needed?? I've checked all the Toshiba sites I can
read (English) and just want to make sure everything is how
it should be.

Did a quick scan of the archive to see who all is left
