Re: [MacGroup] bad experience at the Apple store

2009-09-04 Thread Mike Watkins

Eric,

I bought my family pack from Amazon. Their price for a single copy is
$25.00, and for a family pack of five is $43.99. Their web page for
that is at:

Hope this is a help.

Well, I got my Snow Leopard installed yesterday. I still don't
actually use a lot of the functions. It's nice, however, to have the
capability there when I may want it. Had no problems with Rosetta
Stone or anything, mostly because of this group's very good info
before I got the program in the mail.

I had ordered it from Amazon, also, and they gave me the extra five
bucks off when the price fell. Someone else had shared that they got
that price break. Nice.

Now, to read Ed's Arstechnica review.

[MacGroup] Mysterious losses on MAIL screen...

2009-05-16 Thread Mike Watkins
Perhaps someone may be able to help me with my latest quandary. It
used to be true that my MAIL screen showed several sites to the left
of the actual mail.

I still have an INBOX, a SENT box, a TRASH box,, and a JUNK box. But
the Mackintosh HD logo, the little house which represents my personal
site (watk5926), the DOCUMENTS site, and a couple more are gone. My
daughter swears she didn't do anything to cause it... and I made no
changes that I'm aware of. I did NOT install the new 10.5.7... I was
forewarned by the problems some had with that. I can't figure out how
to get them back . They are in my system, but the work-around to get
to them each time is time-consuming and annoying.

I tried copying my DOCUMENTS file and dragging it to the area to drop.
Won't go! Tried shutting the whole computer down and reopening it
after a wait. NO luck! How do I get those things back, short of
reloading the whole 10.5.6 system?

I can call Apple Care (and will) if nobody knows a quick fix. But you
folks usually know more than they do, it seems. I will be anxiously
awaiting some amazing revelation!

[MacGroup] My e-mail address...

2009-04-11 Thread Mike Watkins
I've been told by some of my friends that e-mails sent to me are being
bounced. Somehow, my address has been truncated and therefore
automatically goes to an incorrect address.

My correct e-mail address is:
watk5...@bellsouth.net

I think there are little gremlins which get into my computer at night
and randomly change settings!
Actually, I officially joined our church unofficial Yahoo! chat group
recently, which may have messed up something it shouldn't have
affected. Don't ask me! I have been an unofficial member of the chat
list for a long time.

So I checked, and

Lo and Behold! Under my MAIL PREFERENCES, there was that same
truncated address showing as my outgoing e-mail!

I'm not fond of Yahoo! and had tried too avoid registering at the
site., though I still received the chat group mail. For some reason,
though,my responses to the group weren't going through, so I broke
down and filled out the form for Yahoo! That was probably a mistake.
Anyway, I have (I hope) corrected the error for now.

Sorry if you have had any trouble contacting me.

Supposedly the SuperDuper is a bootable drive, if so how does this
work. Do I hold down a particular key when rebooting to choose the
SuperDuper drive? If I then boot from that drive how do I then use
the software to completely restore the iMac drive? What steps do I
go

reboot to the SuperDuper drive or do I go ahead and install the OS

I am needing direction so I do this correctly, and I am hoping that
using it this way will not put back onto the drive whatever was
causing the problem.

Many thanks for any help by those that have used this before.

[MacGroup] Mail Program Problem

2009-03-05 Thread Mike Watkins
Dear Mac Users;

I hope someone out there on this list (who is more knowledgable than I
am) will help me with this one. I've already called Applecare Tech
Help twice, and been disconnected each time after repeated failures to
solve the dilemna. (I will try them again, when I feel that I can
tolerate the long period of time on the phone that it requires.)

I use the Mail program on my 20" iMac 2600 Pro. Until two days ago, I
could easily click on "Save As" and transfer my Mail document to my
desktop. No longer! Now, when I click on the small screen that appears
for it to be Saved As, nothing happens. I can save text edit documents
or pages from a website, using Save as. So it must be a problem with
my Mail program. I really prefer to use it, rather than another type
of mail.

Please help!

Thanks for being there for everyone in the past... now do your stuff
once more!

Re: [MacGroup] Boosting wireless signal

2009-02-13 Thread Mike Watkins

Dan,

You may want to contact Jonathan Fletcher of this MacGroup. He found
some little "converter" boxes that plug into my electrical outlets.
Lee Larson had also said that they were a possibility for me. I have a
studio, built in my back yard, which was impossible to get a signal to
with my router. The converter idea did the trick for me. Also, my
daughter, who uses her computers in my studio, needed to reset her
internet preferences to Ethernet, rather than AirPort. (We don't have
an AirPort at this point.) My modem, from whence cometh the signals,
is an Ethernet one. The main trick, however, is the converters!
Perhaps one would do; Jonathan used two (one near my main computer and
one in the studio). The prices of these gadgets vary widely.

Re: [MacGroup] dead lampshade

2009-02-03 Thread Mike Watkins

Ann,

My Lampshade Mac went out and I took it to Mac Authority. They charged
$95 (or so) to diagnose it. Had the problem been a software one, that
charge would have been applied to the repairs. It was a bad logic
board, however, which would have cost me $300 to replace. That's
wasn't a good deal, since the Lampshade dude is worth that same amount
to replace with another Lampshade model now. So I ended up buying a
new 20" screen Flat Panel 2.66B 320GB SD Raedon 2600 iMac PRO w/256MB,
plus an Applecare protection policy. It has Leopard installed on it. I
will miss my little Spacecraft iMac.

I am pleased with the new computer... but not comfortable with the
cost, when I can ill afford such! I had hoped that the little
Lampshade guy would last me for the rest of my life, really. No such
luck!

Hope you can get your little fella fixed.

Mike Watkins (who is a woman in spite of her name)

Any further things I should try?

Anne,

Sorry about your fishies... nice to hear, however, that you have an
African Grey Parrot. I have never owned either fish or birds; but I am
in awe of the brain-power of an African Grey. A very close friend of
mine owned one (or it owned him) and they were constant companions...
his stories about that bird were unbelievable sometimes! How long have
you had yours? My friend's bird died from his children having
heartworm medicine on their hands when they fed the parrot. My friend
was a wiry, tough deep sea diver, and he cried like a baby over losing
his African Grey. You are so lucky that yours survived the low
temperatures.

Harry,

Though I live downtown in Butchertown, I will drive all the way out
to Pack 'n' Ship on Hikes Lane (in an older strip mall) just around
the corner from Bardstown Road. I believe they're a UPS facility, but
I think they sometimes also use the Post Office. They have always been
extremely good at packing and shipping... it's worth the try, at
least. I never am sure whether a place is still under the older
ownership. You could call to check that. Good luck!

MacGroup: Help with Address Book!

2005-11-11 Thread Mike Watkins
Jerry,

When I got my new HD put in , I was missing Twain (to import items into
Photoshop). I've been dealing with Epson about that... they're supposed
to be be cutting me a CD and sending it to me with a copy of Twain. It
should be easier than that, I know... but when I try to download it to
my scanner from Epson's site, nothing happens, We've "walked through
it" many times to try to install Twain, on Safari and on Explorer: I
even got a new modum from Bellsouth for my internet. No help.
(Bellsouth didn't charge anything but postage for it.) I should have
the disk any day now , and will call them. per their instructions, to
have them walk me through that installation. (They said it wouldn't be
a regular disk , and it wouldn't show me how to do it own my own.)

I wasn't doing too well this summer, so most of the Epson Twain delay
has been because I didn't feel up to dealing with it. I had both knees
injured and in bad shape, just from over-doing.
I guess I learned my lesson about that... it's just so hard not to try
to do things for myself, even when I do know I should get help. That
has meant a lot of pain, physical therapy, and exercising the knees at
home. I kinda lost my whole summer. I am better now.

I was also missing my Aquarium screen saver after the new HD was
installed, and ended up ordering a replacement (updated) of that
through Amazon. That works fine now.

My Adobe Reader was hanging up halfway through the opening process,
with the blue "progress" rod stopping halfway, and the screen
freezing... sometimes. Other times, it worked fine. I did update Adobe
Reader... so far, so good.

Nothing else seems to be a problem or missing, at least for now. I hope
there's nothing wrong with my new HD.

This Address Book thing has me stumped, however. Some routes I take to
get to an address folder to double-click on an address folder, It will
open (in column view) an empty column, showing no items in folder. I
had a friend staying here for a few days, in the studio, from out of
town. Could he have accidently done something to have lost my
addresses? I think he's computer-savvy enough to not do that though
he doesn't usually use a Mac. (He's from the OTHER SIDE.)

I sure do need a lot of those addresses. Some were new since I ran off
a paper copy last. I suppose I can rebuild , one-by-one, my address
book. My computer still knows many of them. If I am sending an E-mail,
and can start the address, the automatic feature finishes it, still.
That tells me they're in there somewhere, somehow. Am I wrong?

Maybe I need to have you come over and check it out. I couldn't find
Repair Permissions... don't remember the route, perhaps. Don't know
that it would help, anyway. I have had a nasty cold this week and don't
want to give it to anyone... so it would be a few days before I'd feel
I should ask you to come, if you think it would help. What say?

Dan,

I don't even have an address book listing in my Applications folder
when I double-click on it. It's not there. It does show up if I just
double-click on HD, in the right-hand list of that page, however. That,

My address book is lost in space!

MacGroup: Help with Address Book!

2005-11-10 Thread Mike Watkins
Jerry and Dan,

I trued that. When I double-click on that file, which is on my HD page
with many others, the whole page goes blank... except the icons in the
separate left-hand column stay there (such as Mac HD, Desktop, Home
Page ,etc. All the functions on the larger right-hand portion just go
away. (They come back if I start the double-click on HD process
again... and then disappear again each time I double-click on
Addresses. No progress. Now what?

MacGroup: Help with Address Book!

2005-11-09 Thread Mike Watkins
Help!

I have suddenly had a major loss and am in mourning... my address book
is inaccessible.I know how to go the route of Home Computer/ Library/
Application Support/ Address Book/Address Book.data. (That was in an
E-mail I saved from a previous person's question/ answer on our list
serve.)

My problem then is that I cannot find an application to open that file.
I'm told that "There is no default application specified to open the
document "AddressBook.data"." I can then choose to Cancel or to Choose
Application. Seems as though I would then want to Choose Application.
That's all well and good, but whatever I seem to choose as the
application will only give me choices of New Folder or Cancel. There is
also a space designated Open but it is shaded and not usable. Now
what?

I had it in my dock; but when I clicked on it, all I got was a big
question mark over the center of it.
While trying to fiddle with that, I "poofed" away that icon. Don't ask
me how it got into this condition in the first place... I haven't the
foggiest idea.

I can find all sorts of folders, etc. regarding Addresses; but they
don't get me anywhere. I get the same "No default application to open,
etc." for all of those, too. Now what do I do?I've yet to find anything
I can ask Help to get a pertinent answer.

I am running a G4 iMac with a flat screen, on Panther/ version10.3.9
system. I do have a back-up LaCie HD; it's gone on that, too.

MacGroup: backing up my system

2005-11-06 Thread Mike Watkins
Harry,

I saw your LaCie HD at one of our group meetings many moons ago. The
only disadvantage I thought it had was that it was very heavy to hold/
pick up.

Bought one of my own a few months ago, which I really like. It's such a
good-looking item (a simple, rectangular, stainless steel, silvery
box), plus takes up very little space on my desk... and the recent
models are made differently, so they're lighter weight. I can't
remember offhand what it's original capacity was listed as ... on my
desktop, it says 233.61 GB, with 228.65 GB free to use. They can be
bought in many capacities at MacTown.

Mine is set to automatically back up anything I put into my flat-screen
Martian iMac, at any time. (capacity of 114.9 GB, at present.) The iMac
has a replacement HD in it, because mine went bad two days after my
three-year (Apple Care) warranty expired. Woe was me! I was grateful
when that happened to have the LaCie. You were a good influence!

MacGroup: force to trash [bcc][faked-from]

2005-10-10 Thread Mike Watkins
Cathy,
I'm no expert; but I found out I could get past the beach ball of death
to my blue apple logo in my top menu by going into Safari (from the
dock). The pointer then will cross Safari intact, and I can click on
the apple. It will show an option of Force Close, which gives mw a
little screen listing everything open. I then highlight the offending
category, and do Force Close . I don't remember how I found it would
work; it just does (for me, at least). I use an iMac with Panther
running, if that matters.

MacGroup: files alphabetical order

2005-08-22 Thread Mike Watkins
Marta,

This doesn't apply just to Mail, but to all your files. I just
double-clicked on my Document file; it opened, showing me a long list
of files that I have stored there. I double-clicked then on my file
labeled Health. It also has a long list of records files. I then
clicked on the top of the right-hand side column (where it says "Date
Modified), now all those items in my Health folder are listed with most
recent activity at the top (in my case): you may reverse that order and
have them listed with most recent activity at the bottom, if you
prefer. For that, you would click on the arrow to the right of Date
Modified. See?

I hope this helps. Haven't seen you in quite a while... you know I'm
always hoping you're feeling okay. I won't say well... perhaps that's
too much to hope for (though I do, of course).

Try this and see what happens.

MacGroup: files alphabetical order

2005-08-21 Thread Mike Watkins
Marta,
Under any set of files (or sub-files), there are headings at the tops
of the columns, designating such things as Subject or Date Received (or
Date Modified). If you click on the Date column, it lists according to
the chronological order in which received or modified. If you click on
Name or on Subject, it will list those alphabetically. Each individual
file, say, in Documents (such as e-mails from a certain individual),
uses the same method to get the columns to behave this same way. There
is also an small arrow at the far right of the Subject/ Date line.
Clicking on this will reverse the order so that the last is first, as
best I can explain that. Try it and see what happens.

Marta,

This E-mail answer of yours is very impressive! I have little or no
idea what you're talking about, since I've never dealt with a Palm
Pilot (or any such creature). You sound like a guru yourself! Using
terms such as cross-sync, hotsynching, and software conduits...Wow!

MacGroup: RE: web browsers and email clients [bcc][faked-from ]

2005-03-10 Thread Mike Watkins
Cathy,

I use Mail in the dock of my OSX (the one with the eagle and the
cancelled stamp) and Safari, and I am well satisfied with both. There's
no charge for Mail, which is a built-in feature of the OSX programs. I
have BellSouth's DSL and they will be able to walk you through setting
everything up, if you need the assistance. I've had good results from
just calling their customer service reps. They used to be awful when
Mail was a new feature; all they could tell me was that they didn't
support it. (Which meant they hadn't yet been trained about it.) Now,
however, they seem to be on board.

You will still get duplicates of the same mail on the
webmail.bellsouth.net website, which is a back-up... or can be used
if you're out of town or somewhere else where you have to access your
mail on someone else's computer. You must be sure not to let that
webmail site get too full, clearing it occasionally, also. Otherwise,
you'll be wondering why your mail isn't able to get through to you,
even though you're deleting it on your Mail program.

MacGroup: Security Update 2005-001

Thanks for the feed-back about the new security update. It popped up
yesterday as available... again. I gave it another try, and this time
it did install with no difficulty! I'll probably never know why.

MacGroup: Latest Security Update...

2005-02-01 Thread Mike Watkins
Help! I have tried three times to download the new Security Update
2005-001, Version 1.0, size 6.8 MB.

Each time it has appeared on a drop-down screen telling me it is
available. (I am running an iMac with OSX, Version 10.3.7.) Each time,
I have tried to install it; the blue horizontal progress bar gets about
half-way across, and that's it. The text reads" Installing (waiting for
local disks...)

I have left it running for a long time, with no progress past that
point, during every attempt. What could be wrong? Any suggestions?

I clicked on the tinyurl website given as an example by Rex Baldazo,

Sounds as though many others were/are having the same problem. In case
you missed it, or don't have it any longer, the tinyurl is:

Alex,

A couple or so months ago I was having a slow-down, including Internet
and Mail problems. I called my server, BellSouth, and a knowledgeable
service rep walked me through some changes in my preferences. I'm not
sure what we did, but it solved my problem. My iMac is speedy again.

You might try to do the same with Insight BB. Hope your fix is as easy
as mine was. Good luck.

Ward,

Not true! I bought the LaCie 250GB Firewire HD from MacTown. I asked
for you that day and was told you were "on-site" somewhere. I tried to
buy printer ink there last time, too, but you-all didn't have my type
in stock. (I use Epson T008201 color and T007201 black.)

See, I am more loyal than you realize!

Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes... I plan to have dinner with some

MacGroup: Hard drive for backup...

2004-11-24 Thread Mike Watkins
Jerry, Anne, and others;

I've almost got my backup stuff loaded onto my new LaCie HD. It's
taking me awhile to get the concept down... I've never tried to back up
things before. This is another whole new world. About the time I think
I've done it, I discover I'm wrong! I did get my pictures, documents,
etc. done tonight. Now I'm trying to figure out how to back up
iTunes... that doesn't work for me.

When I try to drag my iTunes folder to my LaCie, I am told (on a little
drop-down screen) that I have a firewall up preventing me from sharing
my music. I don't want to share it with another computer; I just want
to back it up to avoid possibly losing it.
Can someone help me by explaining, in beginner's language, how to do
this? Is it possible?

Jerry helped me with the general idea and confirmed my hook-up is fine;
Anne told me tonight that she was pretty sure I hadn't done it right...
she was correct. I had decided to just feed it my whole Mac HD at once
to make it easy. All I really had stored was a Mac HD alias. So I came
home tonight and fed it some individual folders... which is what Jerry
had suggested in the first place. (I put in the lazy shortcut on my
own.)

So, now ... how about iTunes? Hope you-all can help. Thanks. And Happy
Thanksgiving to you all.

I don't have a .mac account. I'm getting things just fine on my Mail

I'm more or less up to date. At least, the computer is.

MacGroup: Re: Powerbook

Julia,

I don't know anything about which Mac would be best for you. However, I
have appreciated my Applecare service a great deal. I'd do it again, if
I had the opportunity. The reps have always been exceedingly helpful,
and will patiently spend as much time with one as it takes to solve
one's problem. I do use DSL service, which means that I can be on my
land-line phone at the same time that they are guiding me through steps.

MacGroup: Very slow DSL...

2004-08-29 Thread Mike Watkins
All,

I have BellSouth's DSL and have always done very well with it. It used
to be super fast. Lately, I've been noticing that it's slowing down.
Yesterday, it refused to even open most websites, even my BellSouth
webmail. So I called BellSouth. Luckily, I got a rep who knew what to
do.

He led me through System Preferences to Network. Under Proxies, he then
instructed me to remove the check before Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV).
He said it should only be checked if I use a dial-up system.
Wonder of all wonders, it worked... and today my Safari is again
lightning fast and wonderful. My E-mail has stopped giving me frequent
warnings that I may not be able to receive mail. I am happy.

The only thing that puzzles me is why this seems to have been a
progressive slow-down, rather than an immediate failure. I have never
changed those settings since I have been using Jaguar. (I am on a 15"
flat screen iMac, version 10.2.8, if that matters.)

Hen,

Back when you long-time users were reading all these things for the
first time, I didn't own a computer. I bought my first (and present)
one in the spring of 2001. So I'm somewhat like the proverbial goose
who wakes up every day in a whole new world. By now, just a little of
that world looks familiar, however... I have this group to thank for
most of that.

I tried following the chain of jokes in the first of the sites you
list, until I gave up... it goes on and on. So, thanks for the long
supply of humor, in addition to the other things you and the others
have given to me.

John,

Thanks for the method... works great. Though I have Jaguar (an older
kitty) it works fine within this system, also. Good help!

MacGroup: What's up with my Mail?

2004-08-09 Thread Mike Watkins
All,

Once in awhile, I press delete and mistakenly send an E-mail to my
trash. As soon as I realize I really wanted to keep it in my In Box, I
go to Message in the top Menu Bar and, under Message, click on Transfer
to "On My Mac" Again. This used to undo my Delete and return it to my
In screen. I have recently tried it (several times) and it just totally
disappears from all the Mail categories. What's up with my Mail? I am
using Jaguar.

Did some security or other update perhaps change it? There is also a
Transfer under Messages. That will, if I slide the cursor to the right,
give me a choice of where to transfer the message. That may work, but
is more trouble, and I don't see why the way I used to do it would
still be listed under Message if it doesn't do what it says now. Is
that confusing enough? I hope you know what I'm asking about.

MacGroup: Re: Copying

2004-08-04 Thread Mike Watkins
To Whom It May Concern,

Ward, you don't owe anyone an apology. You did not incite the riot.

And, Kay, I don't know you... but you seem to need a lesson in
appropriate communications, even when you are in direct opposition to
someone. You are being extremely rude. It seems to me that if you feel
another person is mistaken in their ideas, you could get better results
by being less angry in your responses. I am an artist, also... you may
be more financially successful than I have ever been; but I'd be
willing to bet that I am a happier person. It's not even a case of men
ganging up on a professional woman. I am a woman, also, and not a
doormat for anyone. Yet I have never taken such a tone with anyone.

Angry words (such as you are persisting in using) usually tend to leave
one with egg on one's face. If the omelet fits, wear it. (Sorry ... I
couldn't rest being just a little snide. I'm not perfect.)

I don't believe that Hen would want to interfere in any way with your
making your living. He was just trying to answer another list member's
question.

Everybody,

Thanks for the great responses. I guess since I'm not a wireless user I
won't have a problem. I will pass on the answers to my friends in the
immediate neighborhood, though... some do use an Airport set-up. My
good friend across the street, for instance, may not know about the
WEP/ WAP difference. You people are all so smart and good about
helping! I'm glad to have found the MacGroup.

2004-07-21 Thread Mike Watkins
All,

Is there anything I need to do to protect my computer's DSL service
from being used by someone outside my home? I do not have a wireless/
airport type set-up... just a regular BellSouth high speed DSL
conection.

There's a kid in our neighborhood who is lurking outside some of my
neighbor's houses to use their internet on his laptop... I've seen him
by two of my neighbor's houses, and that's what he says he's doing. He
told me he didn't think they'd mind. (Of course, they're not home at
the time.) He sat out in front of my next-door neighbor's for several
hours on Monday. She doesn't have a wireless set-up, either... perhaps
he was really tapping into the folks across the street's system?

If he or someone else can access my internet, what are the dangers to
my system? I don't know how skilled he is. If he did anything illegal
using my connection, or if his computer had a virus, or whatever...
what could happen? Would you report him to anyone... and, if so, who?

Anyone know about this stuff?

Mike

Frank,

I have never used Insight for my computer... they annoy me enough as my
cable TV provider. I find getting through to anyone can be extremely
frustrating at times. I do use BellSouth DSL, and have never had any
problems with their service. My downloads are fast, and always work
fine. I haven't timed it for awhile; last time I did it was way up
there in speed... I'm happy. The only thing I don't like is paying my
monthly bill for it... guess there has to be a catch somewhere.

Jerry, or anyone who knows;

I wasn't able to find the "Make Windows Friendly Attachment" checkbox
anywhere, either. We talked about that at our last group meeting... I
believe Ward pointed it out to us. With the Mail program opened, I went
to Edit, then Attachments, then Always Send... or at least I tried to
do that, following Ward's instructions for the route. The problem was
that the route didn't exist on Jaguar... are you sure this isn't only a
Panther thing?

MacGroup: Meeting 6/22/04

2004-06-22 Thread Mike Watkins
Mark and Ward,

Thanks for the help. I came home and immediately took everything out of
my Macintosh HD Documents file and distributed the stuff in my Home
files. It will probably prove to be easier somewhere down the line. I
lost a couple of items while I was dragging them to my desktop in the
process of the transfers. Where do things like that go? They weren't in
my trash. I did look there. No telling what Purgatorial spot they are
trapped within!

I also tried, under Mail,to go to Edit, to Attachments, to Always send
in Windows acceptable/compatible(?) mode. There is no such route in
Jaguar. Must be a Panther thing. I will try soon to get Toast and some
DVD's to use for backing up my system.

Appreciate the answers, even if I didn't truly understand all of them
completely.

Folks,

I can't recall who among us mentioned a wonderful screen saver a few
months ago. However, I would like to testify that I have been using it
and find it an amazing source of beautiful images. It can be endlessly
experimented with and changed to get many patterns and colors, etc.

The website where it can be downloaded (free of charge) (or donation,

I use it on Jaguar... it may be only compatible for OSX. Check it out.
If nothing else, it will give you plenty to do with your time, just
trying out new creations.

MacGroup: keychain entry

2004-04-24 Thread Mike Watkins
Marta,
I don't have a .mac mail account, and it seems I may be missing
something! I really like gorillas; in fact I collect them (toys, etc./
not real ones). And you know I love cats... If Lee's been kidnapped and
a gorilla has taken his place, that sounds intriguing. A mystery!

A month or so ago, I accidentally posted a message here with my
digital signature attached. Your mail program dutifully grabbed my
public key off the signature and placed it in your keychain. All
worked as it should. You can keep it in your keychain, or delete it.

I suspect most X.3 users on this list who use Apple's mail now have
my public key in their keychain.

MacGroup: web mail [.mac gripe]

2004-04-14 Thread Mike Watkins
Marta,
When I got my iMac a bit over two years ago, I bought an Apple Care
plan for three years. I seldom call them lately; but tech support calls
are free and they will patiently walk me through a problem while
they're on the line. I've already started wondering if I can renew that
plan when it's due to run out. It's been great.

MacGroup: Appleworks

2004-03-26 Thread Mike Watkins
Marta,

I'm running Appleworks 6.2.9...don't know if it goes further than that.
I'm a bit behind you, since I'm still on Jaguar.

And thanks to you and to Schoun for your input on the GB's installed
and available question. I still wonder what brought it on, but I'm glad
to have it. Don't think I've changed the Finder view options since I
had Jerry Y. install Jaguar, and it's started since then. Like Schoun
says, I'll just "be happy".

Hey, for once, I can answer somebody! click on System Preferences in

a little person in a blue circle (at the lower right side of that

Good to "hear your voice".

Marta,

Your questions, once again, have helped me learn what I didn't know I
didn't know! Never before have I looked into Universal Preferences. I
didn't realize I had a "big A" at the top of Safari for enlarging type
size. Keep on asking the questions I haven't even thought of, Marta.

I loved the line, "I click- therefore I am."

Jerry,

I did find the 'Show item info" and it was unchecked. I went ahead and
checked it, since I like having the info there. As I said, I wasn't
complaining, just curious. I've often wondered where to find this info,
and didn't know. Now I have it... it all seems good to me. I hope it
stays there.

Thanks, Jerry.

I use Jaguar, 10.2.8 on an iMac, and your hyperlink is a different

Bill,

Thanks. I did the PithHelmet install and then went to Safari. Didn't
notice anything much, which I gather is the point of the whole thing.
Thanks. Next I'll try to mess with RealOne again.

MacGroup: re: Stuffit and Pith Helmet...

2004-01-28 Thread Mike Watkins

To Lee, Bill R., and Jerry,

Thanks for the answers at the meeting. I did successfully download
Stuffit 8.0.2. Now what I do with it is anybody's guess. I did the
install on Internet Explorer, per Lee's advice. I trashed all the old
Stuffit stuff.

Wasn't as successful with Pith Helmet. I used the web address I thought
I saw on the screen, Bill. It was:
. I got a web page that
just said "Oops! Not Ready", or something of the sort. I used Safari
for the Pith helmet attempt, which I understood to be appropriate.

I thought I'd succeeded in installing a Real One Player, also. However,
I got no result when I tried to get a program to play. Perhaps I just
don't understand how that whole game plan works. So, all my Real One
icons, etc. are also trashed and I'm ready to start that fresh. I'd
love to be able to sit down to my iMac (at any time of day that suits
me), pick a program from WFPL's "This American Life" or "The Splendid
Table" and listen to it. iTunes usually pops itself into the mix some
where during this series of steps... at some time or another a little
screen with on/off and volume arrows appears. But there's nary a sound
to be heard, ever. Does anyone have a clue as to how to guide me
through this procedure? Jerry?

Mike

MacGroup: Deja Vu...

Jerry,
I read every sterling word that I received when I got it the first
time. But, on the second time around, I felt I was reading the typed
equivalent of an echo. Your efforts are never wasted... you and Lee and
many others are always appreciated. I'm looking forward to hearing much
wisdom at this coming Tuesday's meeting!

Today's List Serve E-mails were like deja vu all over again! Last night
I had erased several exchanges, mostly between Lee and Jerry, about the
automatic log-off for the teenaged daughter. When Lo and Behold, there
they were again in today's mail! Very unusual behavior for my computer
and/or the List Serve. Am I the only one?

John,

I have Marine Aquarium, which I like very much. That's a tank full of
fish. I'm not familiar with Fluid. How does one see it?

Bill,

It is "Fluid", a beautiful screen saver, I just loved it, but oh so
